In order to maximize the recovery of ore in variably dipping ore zones of moderate width, cemented backfill is normally placed to serve as structural support. With the intention of saving on costs, backfill of low cement content can be used, which are often supported by a sillmat of higher strength. The stability of the low cement backfill face, exposed during adjacent mining, must be carefully studied to provide very effective, safe and economic mining operations. Improper design of these stope support structures may result in fill mass failure resulting in relaxation and failure of the stope walls, with consequent losses of production, ore dilution, and in safety problems. This paper presents a study conducted to assess fill performance during adjacent pillar mining and to provide a comprehensive understanding of backfill behaviour, the failure modes that may occur and the consequences to production, ore dilution and to safety problems, and accurately predict their stability. The design study investigated the effects of stope width and height, orebody geometry and inclination, and wall roughness on the stability of cemented backfill during adjacent pillar mining. Fill properties used were based on paste fill specimens cured for 28 days. Paste fill performances were assessed based on analytical and numerical modeling studies for the different mining conditions. Analytical modeling was carried out using limiting equilibrium analysis and numerical modeling was carried out using FLAC3D. The modeling results suggested that, for stopes that are inclined with smooth wall rock conditions, backfill failure, driven by the fill self-weight, has minimum dependency on the binder content and is reduced by resisting forces developed on the footwall-fill contact. For inclined stopes with rough wall rock conditions, wall roughness contributes significantly to the stability of the backfill during adjacent pillar mining. The analytical modeling approach was demonstrated to be useful in providing some approximate parameters for predicting the behaviour of paste fill exposed faces during adjacent mining, but cannot predict the mode or mechanisms of failure. Numerical modeling not only assess the stability behaviour of paste fill free faces, but also is able to provide a better idea of paste fill failure modes and possible failure mechanisms. The depth of failure and the potential for instability for a simulated stope filled with paste fill can be predicted, and may be useful in estimating the mass of material that could possibly fail and ore dilution levels.

"The technology known as Expert Systems is being used within the minerals industry in a wide variety of problem areas. Applications include diagnosis, prediction, training, monitoring and control. Expert Systems provide a way to program computers to imitate human thinking. The construction of such systems is a straight-forward task that can be quickly learned by novices but can require a lifetime to master.To assist in the understanding and utility of this technology, a special manual bas been prepared which operates on a microcomputer under the MS-Windows environment. The manual covers all aspects of Artificial Intelligence of relevance to Expert Systems. A hypertext system allows users to probe as d•~ply as needed to achieve understanding or to simply skim the surface of the knowledge to obtain a quick overview of subjects. The manual was developed under the sponsorship of the Mineral Sciences Laboratory of CANMET and is available from the Mining and Mineral Process Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia. Annual updates are planned to keep abreast of new developments in this rapidly changing technology. Les domaines d'application comprennent le diagnostic, la prédiction, la formation, la surveillance et le contrôle des procèdes. The most extensively used methods and approaches for characterizing and selecting frothers for plant application are based on measurements in clean water in the absence of solids and without consideration of physicochemical factors that are known to influence the properties and behavior of practical flotation froths, and hence metallurgical performance. These factors include aquatic chemistry, collectors, modifiers, particle shape and size, and pH. Understanding interactions between these factors and the role and relevance that they play in characterizing frothers and froth zone properties will greatly aid in the frother selection and evaluation process. Such an understanding will also greatly enhance the ability to create frother solutions that are sufficiently robust to plant variability (such as mineralogical, comminution, operational, physical and chemical). This paper reports results of a “systems approach” study designed to probe ways in which physicochemical factors a) influence frothing and bubble size in 2- and 3-phase systems, and b) confound correlation of fundamental measurements with flotation outcome. The concepts and insights gleaned from fundamental frother studies, together with empirical laboratory flotation tests and a thorough understanding of plant needs and challenges were used to develop and implement customized frother formulation at a Cu-Mo flotation plant. Plant metallurgical data and qualitative assessment of froth zone properties showed that a frother formulation developed using the approach described here provided marked improvements in froth characteristics (mineralization, mobility, stability, persistence). These improvements resulted in better circuit control and significant performance advantages, such as improved coarse particle recovery, without detrimental downstream effects. INTRODUCTION Successful recovery of value minerals of sufficient grade via the flotation process requires selective manipulation of the value minerals to render them hydrophobic using collectors and modifiers. The hydrophobized minerals then attach to air bubbles and the mineral-bubble aggregates are selectively transported through the froth zone into the launder. Frothers play a critical role in froth formation and more importantly in achieving and maintaining desirable froth characteristics (for example, stability, mobility, persistence) that are essential in facilitating the selective transport and recovery of value minerals. Fundamentally, frothers contribute to the transient stability of thin liquid films and so aid in reducing bubble coalescence rates in the pulp and froth zones, thus maintaining the small bubbles required for efficient bubble-particle attachment. Invariably, the action of frothers at the liquid/gas interface in the pulp and froth zones impacts bubble stability, water and solids transport to the froth, which in turn impacts froth mobility, froth carrying capacity, and the concentrate grade. Consequently, selection and evaluation of frothers for flotation plants requires careful consideration of the frother type, though the choice is limited to only two main classes of compounds in terms of fundamental chemistry (short chain alcohols and polyglycols). Even with the selection of what is thought to be the best frother for a given application, practical knowledge of the froth zone and experience in controlling its properties is essential for maximizing metallurgical performance.

The energetics of CO and CO2 hydrogenation to methanol were studied on a gold surface via periodic and cluster DFT calculations. CO hydrogenation appears to be much easier than CO2 hydrogenation on an Au(111) surface. The use of a cluster model does not seem to improve the energetics of CO2 hydrogenation. It is concluded that an active support (e.g. ZnO) will be required to increase the productivity of a gold surface towards synthesis gas conversion. The energetics of CO and H2 adsorption are improved on the cluster model compared to a slab model of an Au(111) surface, suggesting that nanosized gold particles may be beneficial in CO hydrogenation.

ABSTRACT: Joseph (2002) introduced passive seismic monitoring to measure mining equipment performance. This paper evaluates the potential of passive seismic monitoring to correlate mining equipment operation with oil sands surface response, with a mining hauler as the seismic source. When applied to moving haulers, this action–reaction approach is complex. Vibrations from on-board equipment, such as pumps and tires, dirty the signal with noise. To facilitate any correlation, the signal must be cleaned up. Existing geophysical analytical techniques were manipulated to evaluate the noise problem and to filter sufficiently to permit an evaluation of whether a mining equipment action–ground response relationships in fact discernable.

Cemented rockfill (CRF) plays a vital role in pillar-less mining. Many factors are associated with optimum design of a CRF material. Factors like strength, placement method, mixing, curing time, water content, binder contents, binder composition and additives require to be studied for appropriate rockfill design. The most important factor is strength of a CRF. The design engineer considers fill strength requirements (FSR) for the estimation of CRF strength requirements. Inappropriate CRF strength can cause excessive ore dilution. The recent studies on CRF practices at some of the Canadian mines revealed the most common flaws. Comparison of different types of fill determined that most of the failures occur in cemented rockfill, and the compressive strength can be improved by small addition of sand and mine tailings. This work discusses the studies on determination of unconfined compressive strength, Young?s modulus, density and water contents of CRF being placed in the excavated stopes. It was found that the CRF properties were largely influenced by the variation in gradation and curing time. The 7% binder content improved compressive strength of rockfill significantly but it has an influence on the economics, whereas 4% and 5% binder contents are better choices. The maximum Young?s modulus values were obtained at 28 days curing time for most of the samples.

Landslides not only cause interruption of road traffic but also cause damage to passing by vehicles and injure people in Taiwan. Due to the budget limitation of government, the overall assessments and maintenance of all road slops cannot be fulfilled. Priority of road for maintenance is a crucial task for road maintenance department to identify. The purposes of this research are to develop an assessment method for the landslide risk and to make strategies to maintain or repair the slopes along mountain roads. To aim both needs to take into account the environmental conditions of the slopes, the engineering measures for stabilizing road slopes, the transportation issues, and the human concerns when dealing with the slopes maintenance along the mountain roads. This study firstly establishes the Landslides Damage Risk Evaluation Model (LDREM) to calculate the risk of slope failure, considering the probability of landslides, temporal probability, spatial impact probability, the value of human life, transportation time increased, and travel cost due to detour etc., and then the loss of life and transportation can be calculated. Secondly, based on the value of risk and the risk evaluation, considering the risk acceptance criteria for loss of life could provide assistance for road maintenance department to determine the priority of mountain roads for maintenance.

Each species is unique in its requirements for and tolerances to the full spectrum of chemical elements in the Periodic Table. Studies to define the chemical characteristics of common trees and shrubs of the temperate forest are providing insight to their use for exploration, i.e., biogeochemical exploration. Examples of surveys over gold deposits in British Columbia show the effectiveness of sampling various tissues from different species in a range of biogeoclimatic environments. At the Nickel Plate mine in the Montane-Spruce zone, outer bark of Lodgepole pine was effective in defining a large area of metal enrichment; at the Carolin mine in the zone of Coastal Mountain Hemlock, analysis of twigs of western hemlock and Pacific silver fir provided an exploration target considerably larger than that defined by lithogeochemistry; at the Mount Washington gold deposit in the Mountain Hemlock zone, twigs of mountain hemlock and rhododendron were used to outline the mineralization; and in the Interior Douglas-fir zone at the QR deposit analysis of Douglas-fir tops collected by helicopter provided a rapid and effective method of identifying a gold-rich area.

"This paper outlines geotechnical conditions that commonly exist in underground, hardrock mines and the challenges posed for ground-support steel, specifically rockbolts, used in these environments. A model is proposed whereby the in-situ stress and rock-mass classifications (based on Bieniawski’s rock mass rating) form the basis of determining the desired steel properties of the rockbolts used. Based on the ASTM F432 bolting specification, recommended minimum steel properties are defined for three ranges of in-situ stress levels, each with their own six ranges of RMR values. Heat treatment for the steel can be specified once these minimum steel properties are known.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article décrit les conditions géotechniques qui existent fréquemment dans les mines souterraines de roches dures et les défis que cela pose pour le soutien de terrain en acier, plus spécifiquement les boulons d’ancrage utilisés dans ces environnements. Un modèle est proposé dans lequel les contraintes in situ et les classifications de la masse rocheuse (selon la classification de la masse rocheuse de Bieniawski) servent de base pour la détermination des propriétés désirées pour l’acier des boulons d’ancrage utilisés. En se basant sur les spécifications de boulonnage de l’ASTM F432, les propriétés minimales recommandées pour l’acier sont définies pour trois plages de niveaux de contraintes in situ, chacune avec sa propre plage de six valeurs de classification de la masse rocheuse (RMR). Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. is developing their Strange Lake B Zone REE deposit located in Northern Quebec. An extensive batch bench scale testing program was launched to investigate open circuit rougher flotation performance under different conditions. The objective of the flotation study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of rejecting gangue minerals to flotation tailings while concentrating rare earth elements as well as yttrium, zirconium, and niobium into a concentrate suitable for further hydrometallurgical processing. Mineralization of interest at Strange Lake occurs within peralkaline granite-hosted pegmatites and minor aplite. The REE and high field strength element (HFSE)-bearing phases are hosted primarily in pegmatites as relatively fine-grained phases or pseudomorphs. The gangue phases comprise of quartz, feldspar, amphibole, and pyroxene. Potential ore minerals comprise predominantly of kainosite, gerenite, gadolinite, zircon, pyrochlore, and gittinsite. These complex mineralogical characteristics increase the difficulty for processing and provide a challenge for choosing the correct reagent scheme in rougher flotation. Process options including reverse flotation to reject the gangue minerals and de-sliming prior to the direct rougher flotation were investigated. Optimization trials were conducted using various reagent regimes and under different flotation conditions. Encouraging results were found using a combination of collector reagents supplied by Cytec Canada Inc.

The paper will outline the destructive test methods and test procedures including the evaluation criteria currently used at the Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL), Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, a laboratory approved by the Ontario Minister of Labour for the purpose of testing or examining mine shaft ropes or other hoisting appliances. For the evaluation of the mechanical properties of rope samples used in "ultra-deep" single-lift shafts, additional discard criteria used in Ontario, Quebec and South Africa shall be presented. Most of the methods and test procedures currently used at MTL can also be found in the current CSA G4-00 Standard, Steel Wire Rope for General Purpose and for Mine Hoisting and Mine Haulage, published in November 2000. In this latest or sixth edition of CSA Standard G4-00, a new Clause 14 has been added outlining the requirements for in-service destructive testing of steel wire ropes for mine hoisting applications. The CSA G4-00 Standard is also intended for the manufacturing of new ropes, and includes requirements for raw materials and construction features for round strand and flattened strand rope, and locked coil rope in bright and galvanized finish. To-date the Ontario Mining Regulations require only that destructive test of new ropes be performed in accordance with CSA Standard G4-00, but does not require conformity to the Standard, and on the other hand the inservice wire ropes are required to be tested in accordance with CSA G4 and thus require conformity. The author recommends that the Ontario Mining Regulations (and regulations of other mining jurisdictions) be improved in order to ensure quality control in the manufacturing of wire ropes destined for mines in Ontario (and Canada). Also, the author recommends the revision of the CSA G4-00 Standard by the technical committee in order to address manufacturer?s concerns with respect to compliance, and harmonize the Standard with Internationally recognized Standards.

Digital measurements can be transmitted across existing mine-wide wireless communication networks, interfaced directly with infra-red enabled PDA?s or PC?s, and parsed to memory by low-cost data-loggers.

Several grindability tests were developed over the years to design grinding circuits or optimize existing operations. Each test has its own strengths and weaknesses and it is imperative to select the proper test procedure(s) to meet project deliverables and minimize the risk of a project. Pilot plant testing of large bulk samples historically constituted the traditional approach for AG or SAG design, but was gradually replaced by small-scale tests. Nowadays, conducting grindability tests requiring only a few kilos of material on several samples is a more typical approach to grinding mill design. This paper summarises the requirements and deliverables of various bench-scale test procedures, their strengths and weaknesses, and cases where AG/SAG pilot testing should still be performed.

Abstract -A radiometric survey was carried out over clastic sediments in the immediate vicinity of some phosphatic sediments of Cretaceous age in the Wadi Qasser Al-Hallabat basin of central Syria. The objective was to explore for uranium and to define its dispersion pattern. This was based on ground radiometric surveys and geological studies. All ground surveys (using radon emanometry, track etching, gamma-ray survey and geochemistry) gave similar results, outlining the locations of the radioactive phosphatic formations in the basin, and indicating the dispersion pattern of uranium in the clastic sediments in the surrounding area. The dispersal of uranium from upper Cretaceous phosphatic formation occurs by mechanical weathering and chemical leaching by oxidizing surface waters. A rough estimate is that about one-third of the original uranium content of the Cretaceous sediments has been dispersed. Mechanical erosion is responsible for the main part of this released uranium, which now occurs in Recent sediments. However, the occurrences of spotty secondary U mineralization indicates that another small part of the available uranium must have been chemically leached out by the prevailing oxidizing waters, forming minor surficial minerals.

Sensors are now available in mineral processing circuits to monitor pulp flowrate and density, as well as ore characteristics and other process variables. The amount of information provided by these instruments is considerable but in many cases poorly exploited. This paper gives the results of the application of time series analysis techniques to signals generated by the sensors installed on an industrial Pb dezincing flotation circuit in New-Brunswick. Autocorrelation and cross correlation functions appear to be interesting tools for a preliminary circuit analysis, however the calibration of single input single output discrete transfer functions using collected sensors signals leads to conflicting results. For this reason a phenomenological approach, based on the kinetic and transport properties of the flotation process, is also considered. It has several advantages over the empirical transfer function modelling but also limitations in its applicability to industrial processes. A combination of the transfer function and kinetic modelling approches appears to be a promising avenue for better process modelling and control.

"For many decades the incidence of a highly active graphite-like ore has plagued the McIntyre mine. This ore acts as a precipitant of the gold complex immediately upon formation of this complex. The gold is subsequently discharged with the tailings.Many different methods have been devised by various researchers all of which proved inapplicable for the McIntyre problem.Recently, McIntyre personnel, through their own research, developed a flowsheet. This circuit should give an overall recovery of 36% which is below the 94% experienced in the mill at present. Therefore, less revenue would arise from treatment of these ores. On the other hand there exists a possibility of more efficient mining methods in some of this ore thus allowing more economic recovery.INTRODUCTION This paper has been prepared to serve two purposes:i) To propose a method of recoverying gold from a sizeable orebody at the McIntyre mine at Schumacher.ii) To summarize and present the many methods suggested to solve a very old but very real mineral dressing problem familiar to the industry as long as cyanidation itself."
