In this research work, a process was described for the recovery of copper and zinc in copper converter flue dust from the Black Sea Copper Works' Samsun Smelter Plant. After characterization of a representative flue dust sample, the process included roasting of the flue dust and then leaching in dilute sulfuric acid solution. Roasting time and temperature were studied to determine the optimum roasting conditions. Sulphuric acid concentration, duration, temperature of leaching and solid to liquid ratio were the parameters studied in the bench scale laboratory leaching experiments.

Disseminated hypogene sulphide mineralization in the Lakeshore porphyry copper deposit (also called the Cyprus-Casa Grande deposit) of Arizona occurs in both a granodiorite stock and associated volcanic rocks. Structural development and vein paragenesis at Lakeshore are similar to other Laramide porphyry copper deposits of the southwestern U.S. Two major structural trends are present: intrusive contacts, copper-bearing potassic alteration veins and major post-mineralization Basin-and-Range type faults trend N-NW, whereas phyllic veins and secondary post-mineralization faults trend N-NE, and deep propylitic veins trend NE-ENE. Lithologic permeabilities, caused by fracturing in all rocks and by grain size distributions in volcanic rocks, controlled the distribution of copper mineralization. Differences in chemical compositions of host rocks did not affect are grade. Structural control, through density of chalcopyrite-rich veins, was the major control of are grade. Fracture density of other potassic vein types did not strongly affect grade. Within volcanic lithologies, permeability, as indicated by grain size distribution, provided a second-order, but significant, control of mineralization.

In this context, direct smelting methods have again come into prominence. Consequently, the Kivcet Lead Smelting Process, which belongs to this group, has attracted the attention of the lead producers of the world. The Kivcet Process offers the advantage that lead and zinc can be simultaneously recovered in a single furnace unit. KHD Humboldt Wedag A G, Koln, Federal Republic of Germany, has signed a contract with the Sociedad Complejo Metalurgico de Karachipampa of Bolivia for the delivery of a turn-key Kivcet plant, which is expected to be the first plant of its kind in commercial operation. This paper describes the design and expected operating data of the plant."

The Badgeley Island quartzite deposir in Georgian Bay is worked by lndusmin Limired and was developed in 1969 to produce a high-qualiry silica for use in rhe ferrosilicon and glass industries. The quartzire is part of the Precambrian Bar River Formarion, and is a generally whire, fine-grained rock containing rhin sericire seams. Primary sedimenrary features wirhin the deposit are bedding and ripple marks. Amphibolite and diabase dykes cur the quarr zire body.

"Gold dissolution by cyanide requires the presence of oxygen which is usually supplied by sparging compressed air into the gold containing slurry. For those ores that contain certain obnoxious substances that consume oxygen, maintaining the required minimum level of dissolved oxygen can be troublesome. One of the most economical solutions to the problem of low dissolved oxygen, especially in plants that have air compressors installed, is to enhance the rate of oxygen mass transfer.The oxygen mass transfer rate was measured in a two phase system using two different sparger arrangements, and with addition of a frother that is known to reduce the bubble size produced by the sparger. The common sparger system was shown to be inefficient compared to a readily available but under utilized method of gas dispersion which introduces air directly below the reactor turbine. Transfer of this technology to an operating plant confirmed the beneficial effect of the improved sparger system. The addition of the frother did decrease the bubble size, but it also reduced the oxygen mass transfer rate."

The conventional jarosite precipitation process with neutralization by zinc calcine is widely utilized in the zinc industry. However, it has a significant drawback of causing losses of valuable metals like zinc, lead and silver to the jarosite. This comes mainly from the content of these metals in the calcine used for neutralization. As the zinc plants today want to maximize metal recoveries and minimize the amount of residues, this matter has become more and more relevant for zinc producers. Outotec developed and patented in early 2000 an improved version of the jarosite precipitation process in which the need for neutralization can be minimized, thus the metal losses to the jarosite also can be minimized. At the same time, the iron content of the jarosite increases and the amount of produced jarosite is smaller. The main feature of this process is to start the precipitation from ferrous iron after having reduced all the iron by zinc concentrate in a separate step before jarosite precipitation. Iron is then oxidised back to the ferric form simultaneously with jarosite precipitation. By this method, the formation of sulphuric acid is only half that compared to the conventional method and the need for calcine for neutralization can be avoided. High mixing and oxygen dispersion capability are needed in this jarosite precipitation process. Such capabilities are found in the Outotec OKTOP® reactor series. High performance reactors are not only needed to generate high quality precipitates, but also to maximize oxygen utilization; i.e., to minimize operation costs. "Based on plant mineralogical data & circuit modelling, a pilot plant campaign was conducted at Strathcona Mill to identify options for improving the performance and operating flexibility of the copper-nickel separation circuits. Emphasis was given to options for combined treatment of the two feed streams (primary nickel ore rougher concentrate and copper ore circuit concentrate) to obtain more flexibility in the use of existing column flotation capacities. The pilot test results demonstrated that circuits which incorporated preconcentration prior to column flotation gave the best metallurgical results. Maximum column carrying rates were also related to the preconcentration. Predictions that increased circulating loads from the column scavengers would improve copper-nickel separation performance were confirmed.IntroductionThe copper-nickel separation circuits at Falconbridge's Strathcona Mill produce a high grade (>30% Cu) copper concentrate most of which is treated at the Falconbridge Kidd Creek smelter near Timmins. The remaining nickel concentrate which still contains approximately 20% of the feed copper is combined with other lower grade nickel/copper concentrates and shipped to the Falconbridge nickel smelter. The separation is required because of the limited capacity for copper processing in and downstream from the nickel smelter. Since no nickel is recovered at present in the Kidd smelter, the challenge is to minimize the nickel content of the copper concentrate.At present there are two independent separation circuits treating the rougher concentrates from the copper and nickel circuits as shown in Figure I. The minerals treated are mainly chalcopyrite and pentlandite but there is up to 25% of the copper present as cubanite in the copper ore. The circuits were kept separate because the flotation rates and froth characteristics were very different, probably because of the presence of cubanite and the large difference in the concentrate grades feeding the circuits."

"During hard times, the focus on tax issues makes a slight change in direction. Mining companies contemplate the tax treatment of transactions and circumstances which are the product of a difficult financial environment. Some of these issues are discussed in this month's edition of Tax Notes.Every industrial sector in Canada is undergoing a major restructuring of some form, and the mining industry is not an exception. The longest recession since the Great Depression continues to affect the economy. Mining firms seek to bring their debt/equity ratios into line, and try to replenish depleted retained earnings by selling assets. This month, Tax Notes briefly examines some of the tax issues which are generally encountered during the course of such a restructuring process.Debt SettlementOne question which commonly arises during hard times concerns the tax treatment of a "" gain "" realized by a debtor on the settlement of a debt. Consider, for example, a simple situation where a creditor wants to protect itself from further losses, and makes a deal with the mining company to accept a cash payment of $8 million in full settlement of a $10 million loan. In financial terms, the debtor has made a $2 million gain on the settlement of the debt. What is the tax treatment of that gain?The Income Tax Act (the Act) contains provisions in section 80 of the Act and in section 5400 of the Income Tax Regulations which deal specifically with this question. First of all, it is noted that the $2 million gain is not brought directly into income for tax purposes. However, as indicated below, the gain could affect the debtor's income indirectly to the extent that certain of the debtor's tax pools must be reduced by the amount of the gain."

The increasing complexity of the ores composition worldwide calls for suitable collectors with specific properties, such as selectivity, wettability, and in regard to current regulations, environmental sustainability. Therefore, collectors have to satisfy many features to improve the efficiency of flotation processes. Cellulose nanocrystals gain more and more interest due to the versatile synthesis routes which enable the integration of specific functional groups and components with different degrees of hydrophobicity within the molecular structure. Consequently, cellulose nanocrystals can be employed in flotation processes as depressant or collector molecules, respectively. Nonetheless, the usage of cellulose nanocrystals is still limited due to a lack of the characterization of nanocrystal-mineral interactions and the change of the surface wetting properties of minerals after adsorption phenomena between nanocrystals and minerals. In these studies, butyl-amine cellulose nanocrystal (BAC) and quartz are used as model system to investigate physicochemical properties of both, BAC and quartz, and examine the applicability of BAC in flotation processes. Therefore, the surface charge distribution and electrophoretic mobility of BAC and quartz are investigated and compared to understand the effect of electrostatic interactions between BACs, and BAC and quartz. Based on this, the adsorption of BAC on quartz is examined. Finally, microflotation experiments test the efficiency of BAC to be used in flotation processes. The flotation response is correlated to the specific surface charge of BAC revealing the dominant effect of surface charges on effective particle-bubble adhesions.

"A novel gold deportment technique has been developed for complex copper-gold and double refractory gold ores using state-of-the-art technology. Characterization of these ores is a challenging task due to low copper and gold grades in ores, presence of both primary and secondary copper sulfide phases and variable proportion of visible and invisible gold in different sulfides and iron oxide phases.Double refractory ores are mainly composed of silicates and carbonates with moderate clay and mica, and minor amounts of sulfides and organic carbonaceous matter. Gold mostly occurs as ""invisible gold"" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulfides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Characterization of this carbonaceous matter, commonly known as TCM and quantification of gold associated within TCM, along with different sulfide and oxide phases is highly complex and challenging.Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. This paper presents the development of a systematic approach to diagnostic metallurgy using state-of-the-art optical and automated mineralogy techniques, namely, micro-probe, dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS analysis for quantification of invisible and visible precious metal content in various species. The relevance of the mineralogy characterization to metallurgy will also be discussed in this paper."

"A hybrid process consisting of flotation and magnetic separation has been developed to concentrate multi-phase rare earth minerals associated with a carbonatite ore that contains a significant amount of niobium. Fine grinding to a d80 of <65 microns was required to obtain acceptable separation of 92% of the contained total rare earth oxide (TREO) and niobium in half the feed mass. Whereas it was possible to obtain 85% of TREO in 28% of the feed mass through staged cleaning, it was demonstrated that at least 87% and 85% recoveries of TREO and Nb respectively could be achieved in 16% of the feed if the rougher-scavenger concentrates were calcined, quenched, reground to <25 µm and then magnetically upgraded. The paper discusses the overall concept of the flowsheet and the experimental strategies that led to this progress. INTRODUCTIONOut of the approximately 250 minerals known to contain rare earth elements (REEs), only about 60 of them contain REEs in significant amounts. Over 95% of the world’s rare earth oxides (REOs) are believed to occur in the form of three minerals (Pradip & Fuerstenau, 1991) namely bastnaesite (Ce,La,Y)CO3F, monazite (Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4 and xenotime Y(PO)4. An estimated 51.4% of global REO resources are hosted by carbonatite deposits with the same three minerals as major constituents (Weng et. al., 2015). Any one of the REEs or commonly all of them can be found in these minerals (Ravnaas, 2010). As the demand for critical REEs increases due to the ever increasing applications in advanced technologies, many deposits containing other forms of REE minerals will have to be developed. REE minerals are extensively dispersed and intergrown with several oxides, silicates, carbonates, and phosphate minerals. Consequently it is possible to liberate them only at fine grinding and is thus difficult to separate and produce high grade rare earth mineral concentrates. Most of these minerals contain other important elements such as tantalum (Ta), niobium (Nb), uranium (U), and thorium (Th) in varied quantities. REE minerals in the same ore may exist as carbonates, fluorocarbonates, niobates, silicates, phosphates etc. in association with gangue minerals belonging to different mineralogical groups."

This is a rather comprehensive subject and cannot be thoroughly covered in the short rime allowed for its presentation. This article will touch only upon a few of the chief points of the difficulties encountered in recovering copper from brass shell cases in a primary smelter which was not designed to treat scrap metals. Owing to the fact that the plant is at present (Dec., 1946) closed, and our tests were not completed, full details of the results are not available. As is well known, most primary smelters are situated near the mines in the interior of various countries and are not close to seaports or large industrial and railway centres. Consequently, iris unusual for a primary smelter to be asked to treat scrap metal of any kind. When so required, iris obvious that the primary smelter is at a great disadvantage, for the simple reason that it probably has to pay the freight on the scrap from the seaport or industrial centre to the smelter and then also pay the freight on the recoverable metal from the smelter to the refinery, or seaport or industrial centre. Another disadvantage is that a primary smelter is not equipped to sample and unload the scrap nor bas it usually the equipment adaptable for treating the scrap efficiently, as the plant bas been designed to handle large tonnages of ores and concentrates. This short paper will describe some of our difficulties> and how they were corrected. However, it might be advisable to state briefly some of the methods used in treating brass shell cases in other plants. In the first place, a brass plant producing new brass- especially those producing brass billets for extrusion to make brass tubes or rods, or to be drawn into wire, or making brass cake to roll into brass sheets- generally insists upon using new electrolytic copper and zinc and is opposed to using any scrap or secondary brass . Consequently, such a plant usually will not treat brass shell cases. Therefore, the usual procedure is to ship brass shell cases to a secondary smelter, where it is generally sorted, melted, fire-refined, and returned to the market in the form of a high or low brass ingot which can be sold to brass foundries for making brass castings. This evidently is the cheapest and simplest method. Another method is to ship to a smelter which is a combination of a primary and secondary smelter attached to or near an electrolytic refinery. In plants of both these types, that is a primary smelter with Cottrell dust collectors or a combined primary and secondary smelter with Cottrells or a bag house, the zinc may be wasted. However, if a bag house is used, some of the zinc is recovered, but it is usually contaminated with other metals and further processing is required to recover it.

"This report describes the development and effective use of shaped charges as part of the Elliot Lake Mine Roof Stability Project to remotely remove the heads from roof bolts. With a slight modification, these same shaped charges are being recommended f or use to the Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited (Mining Division), to cut steel cable bolts.IntroductionThe Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory (CERL) often receives requests to cooperate in solving problems encountered in private industry or other sectors of the government. CERL is equipped to design and test explosive and pyrotechnic devices and the policy is to treat each case individually.The first case reported evolved from a request from a sister laboratory at Elliot Lake. The intent was to remotely remove the head s of roof bolts as part of a mine roof stability project. The device designed for this use was 1000,70 effective in the laboratory and 80% effective in the mine.The second case reported results from a request from a private mining company knowledgeable of the Elliot Lake Project. Their requirement was to remotely cut cable bolts. This request was first treated as presenting a new problem. The solution, however, proved to be very similar to the former."

"Gravity concentrators are evaluated either in closed or open circuit. The process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (/98Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator&apos;s product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. In addition to allowing for a more accurate and detailed recovery analysis, this process significantly reduces the time and cost required for unit evaluation when compared to other gold recovery analysis procedures. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems.IntroductionThe surge in gold prices of the late 1970s and early 1980s was followed closely by a renewed interest in gravity concentration processes, especially in concentrators claiming efficient recovery of fine placer gold. Cones, spirals, spinning bowls, jigs and cyclones are all considered potential fine gold concentrators. Fine gold, in this context, is defined as not only that gold finer than 250 um (60 mesh""), but also coarser gold, whose low shape factor may decrease its recovery by conventional, large-scale sluicing operations.Adoption of fine gold concentrators by the Alaskan placer milling industry was retarded by the lack of reliable, accurate, and reproducible data on concentrator efficiency with respect to fine placer gold recovery. In most cases, concentrator performance was based on a limited number of tests run on placer material, about which only slight knowledge of gold size and shape characteristics existed. In order to be prepared for the resurgence of interest in fine gold concentrators, which will follow the next upturn in gold prices, a detailed study of the fine gold recovery characteristics of gravity concentrators needs to be conducted."

"The majority of Ontario&apos;s limestone and dolostone production comes from a few Paleozoic carbonate units. In eastern and central Ontario, Ordovician rock units, which are the main sources for production, include the Oxford, Gull River, Bobcaygeon, Verulam, and Lindsay Formations. They are predominantly utilized for aggregate and cement manufacturing, with the Bobcaygeon Formation being used as a source of building stone. Along the Niagara Escarpment, the Silurian Lockport, Amabel, and Guelph Formations are sources for the limestone industry. The largest tonnage of rock extracted by the industry comes from these Silurian units, especially the Lockport and Amabel Formations. These units are used primarily for aggregate, although they are also a source for lime. In southwestern Ontario, the Silurian Bertie Formation and Devonian strata, represented by the Bois Blanc Formation, Onondaga Formation, Detroit River Group, and Dundee Formation, contribute to Ontario&apos;s production of lime, cement production and crushed stone. The Detroit River Group (Lucas and Amherstburg Formations) is the main source of the lime and cement produced in the province.Northern areas, which may become significant sources for the industry, include Manitoulin Island, the Lake Timiskaming area, and the James Bay Lowland. IntroductionThe Engineering and Terrain Geology Section of the Ontario Geological Survey has undertaken a geological inventory of all active and abandoned limestone and dolostone quarries in Ontario. This geological study, combined with a commercial study of active quarries carried out by the consulting firm of Derry, Michener, Booth and Wahl, will provide an up-to-date report on the industry in the province and will be published by the Aggregate Resources Section of the Ministry of Natural Resources. This report will follow the format and style of D.F. Hewitt&apos;s Ontario Department of Mines Industrial Mineral Reports and Circulars (Hewitt, 1960, I964a, 1964b, 1964c; Hewitt and Vos, 1972). Examinations of the quarries were carried out by geologists in the Paleozoic I Mesozoic Geology Subsection of the Engineering and Terrain Geology Section, and include, in addition to the authors, R,R. Wolf, V.A . Mazur, and D.K. Armstrong in the summer of 1986."

At a meeting of the Montreal Branch of this Institute in the autumn of 1928, the Honorable J. E. Perrault, Minister of Mines for Quebec, announced his intention to enlarge the Bureau of Mines of Quebec by the addition of a Division of Geology. The announcement further stated that the geological work proposed should be begun in the following field season, and that it should be on a substantial scale of not less than six field parties. The announcement was received with enthusiasm and much encouragement was held out for the success of the effort. It has been thought that the present meeting would be a suitable occasion to present a report of progress of this Division for the three years that have since elapsed. History This, of course, is not the first geological work to be undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Prior to the establishment of the Division of Geology, the Bureau of Mines had not been unmindful of the need of geological research, but it had always lacked the means necessary to any sustained work. For more than 25 years the late J. Obalski was the Superintendent and the sole occupant of the Bureau. Yet, even then, Obalski, besides routine visits to mining districts, made a few exploratory trips along the north shore of the St. Lawrence river and one to Chibougamau, but without the equipment necessary to effective results.

"The Nemeiben Lake ultramafic complex, in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield in north-central Saskatchewan, is a small I. 6-km circular plug largely composed of high-alumina pyroxene cumulates forming a series of grossly concentric layers of clinopyroxenite, websterite and wehrlite. Minor dunite and gabbro are present in the northwestern part of the pluton.Disseminated primary magmatic pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and chromite occur throughout the intrusion. Sulphides occur in proportions of economic interest in the northern outcrops. A secondary assemblage of fine-grained oxides, sulphides and native metals occurs in serpentinized and uralitized peridotites and pyroxenites. Primary opaque minerals are largely altered to marcasite, violarite and hematite. The ores represent a primary magmatic assemblage extensively modified by metamorphism and, to a lesser extent, by supergene alteration.The complex intruded an Early Aphebian supracrustral succession during the waning stages of the Hudsonian orogeny. The metamorphic peak during Hudsonian time reached middle to upper amphibolite facies, granitized the country rocks and contributed to the partial amphibolitization of the ultramafic pluton.The Nemeiben complex has a number of features in common with the zoned intrusions of southeastern Alaska, including: the diopsidic composition of clinopyroxene, highly magnesian olivines, ubiquitous primary magnetite, relatively high alumina content of clinopyroxenes and the unlikelihood that associated gabbroic rocks are derived from a magma common to the ultramafic rocks. However, at Nemeiben, orthopyroxene occurs as a widespread postcumulus phase and, to a lesser extent, as a cumulus mineral. This fact, together with geochemical data on whole-rock and mineral compositions, indicates a tholeiitic parentage.The nickel-copper deposits of the Nemeiben Lake ultramafic complex are not currently economic, although standard technology for recovery of sulphide minerals in the clinopyroxenite (and websterite) would probably be adequate. Most ore minerals in the altered peridotites belong to the fine-grained secondary assemblage of opaques due to the formation of retrograde hydrous silicates and are probably too fine grained for standard recovery methods."

"This paper highlights some of the potential application areas of knowledge-based systems in the mining industry. The basic theoretical principles associated with knowledge-based systems are discussed and the justification for mining applications is given. The paper concludes with a brief description of a prototype knowledge-based system applied to scraper selection that was developed at Université Laval on a LISP machine. IntroductionThe beginning of Artificial Intelligence coincided with the conception and development of the first computer systems some thirty years ago. At that time researchers were euphoric about the possibility of modelling the human reasoning process. Soon, however, they discovered that the combinatorial aspect of the set of possible solutions to a particular problem did not permit an in-depth evaluation.In the mid-60s researchers started to look at the heuristic approach because it was more suited to human behaviour with its congnitive abilities (i.e. representing, reasoning, problem solving and advising). The heuristic approach allows possible results rather than exact solutions and it is more rapid and cost effective than the exhaustive combinatorial analysis. The heuristic approach did allow some noticeable progress in the seventies with the development of the first expert system called MYCIN with the objective of diagnosing blood infection diseases."

"Three hydrometallurgicat processes (Noranda chloride leach, B. C. Research biological leach and Sherritt-Cominco activated oxygen leach) and the Noranda pyrometallurgical process have served as the basis for design projects in the final year of the chemical engineering program at the University of Toronto. Each member of a team of five or six students devotes about 200 hours to the project and the final report is expected to include an economic analysis.None of the processes has been developed to full- scale plant, nor, in the case of the B.C. Research and Noranda processes, were pilot plant data available. Nevertheless, the designs developed provide a useful basis for a preliminary estimate of capital and operating costs and for a preliminary assessment of project feasibility.This paper discusses the approach used in the design projects with respect to engineering and economic aspects, and outlines the educational features and benefits of such a program as well as some of the problem areas that arise.IntroductionAs part of the undergraduate degree course in chemical engineering at the University of Toronto, students devote some 200 hours to a design project in their final year. Hydrometallurgical processes, not yet proven at the commercial scale, have been selected for study. The students are required to develop laboratory and / or pilot scale results into a conceptual plant design, using sound engineering principles. Capital and operating costs are then determined and a preliminary feasibility study and economic analysis are carried out."
