The codeposition behavior of impurities such as Ag, Bi, Fe, Ni, Pb and Sb with Cu was investigated galvanostatically at 5-3000 A/m2 using a Pt cathode at 60 °C in acidic copper (I) chloride (cuprous chloride) solution at pH1-2 containing 1.0 mol/L of Cu+ and 4.9 mol/L of Cl-. The impurities were classified into two groups: Group I (Ag, Bi) which codeposits with Cu as a metal, and Group II (Fe, Ni, Pb, Sb) which is slightly involved in the deposited Cu in nonmetal form from the electrolyte. Silver and Bi in Group I behaved as more noble metals than Cu, and significantly codeposited with Cu, showing typical features of regular-type codeposition. When Cu was deposited dendritically, the Ag and Bi content in the deposit increased with increased duration of electrolysis as a result of decreased net current density caused by increased cathode area. The current efficiency for Cu deposition in impurity-free solution was 95-100% over 100-1000 A/m2, but it abruptly decreased at above 1000 A/m2 when the limiting current density of Cu was attained. Although Fe, Ni, Pb and Sb in Group II were involved to 0.01-0.02 mass% in the deposit, they had no influence on the current efficiency or morphology of Cu.

"Eastern Canadian thermal coal mined at Minto, New Brunswick, and in western Cape Breton at St. Rose, Inverness County, Nova Scotia, contains 6-8 per cent sulphur. Both coals are high volatile bituminous. types. The Minto coal averages 18 per cent ash, 7 per cent sulphur and has a Btu rating of 11,900 per lb. Pyritic sulphur accounts for 75 per cent of the total sulphur and the remainder is largely organic; the amount of sulphate sulphur is negligible. This means that in a 7 per cent sulphur coal, 2 per cent is organic and 5 per cent pyritic sulphur. Pit-head St. Rose coal contains approximately 10 per cent ash, 7 per cent sulphur and 11 ,800 Btu/lb. The distribution of sulphur is different to that of Minto coal because about 12 per cent sulphate sulphur is present. Thus, a 7 per cent sulphur coal would contain 4 per cent pyritic, 2 per cent organic and 1 per cent sulphate sulphur.The iron sulphides, pyrite and, to a lesser extent, marcassite occur over a wide size range from large sulphur balls to crack fillings, lenses, and individual crystals and framboids. Coarse-grained pyrite and sulphur balls are easily separated during washing. It is the fine grain sizes, intimately mixed with the coal constituents, that are difficult to separate. Quantimet analyses of the fine grains in coal from both localities showed that about 50 per cent were smaller than 30 micron(1).No efforts have been made to wash the Inverness coal of Nova Scotia and in 1980 washing ceased in New Brunswick. Previously, the Minto coal was processed in an antiquated jig circuit which reduced ash from the strip operation run-of-mine value of more than 20 per cent to less than 18. More effective removal of ash and sulphur could clearly be obtained. Laboratory tests on both Minto and St. Rose coal have shown that ash rejection rates of 40 to 50 per cent at yields of 70-80 per cent were possible(2), Little information on sulphur removal was available."

New regions of material property space can be accessed by combining microstructural design at the nm-scale with architectural design at the µm- or mm-scale. In the first case, large strength increases associated with grain size reduction to below 50 nm have driven extensive research efforts into the development of nanocrystalline materials [e.g. 1-3]. For many potential structural applications, however, the density of a nanocrystalline material is just as important as its strength. In fact, reducing the density is more important than increasing the strength for certain weight specific materials performance indices, and it is especially critical for applying structural nanomaterials in the aerospace and automotive sectors. We have developed a new type of structural nanomaterial wherein the effective density of the parent metal is reduced by more than an order of magnitude by incorporating an internal periodic cellular architecture of open space. In one example a low density cellular nanocrystalline material was created by electroforming nanocrystalline Ni around a rapid-prototyped acrylic photopolymer microtruss, Figure 1 [4]. Microtruss materials have periodic cellular architectures that are specifically designed to undergo stretching-dominated deformation as opposed to the bending-dominated deformation in conventional open cell metal foams [5,6]. This new cellular nanocrystalline hybrid material combined the structural efficiency of microtruss architectures with the ultra-high strength that can be achieved by grain size reduction to the nm-scale. Although it played a critical role as a cathode support during the initial stages of nanocrystalline electrodeposition, the polymer core did not contribute significantly to the inelastic buckling resistance of the composite metal/polymer struts and it may therefore be desirable to remove it post deposition by means of chemical dissolution or thermal decomposition [4]. Nanocrystalline electrodeposition can also be used to reinforce conventional cellular metals (Figure 2), creating new types of cellular composites such as metal/metal microtruss hybrids [7-10] and metal/metal foam hybrids [11,12]. For example, nanocrystalline Ni-Fe alloy sleeve thicknesses of up to 400 µm were used to reinforce an aluminum alloy microtruss that had been fabricated using a stretch-bend approach; the nanocrystalline sleeves had the effect of increasing the microtruss strength by up to a factor of twelve and the specific strength by a factor of three [8]. Alternatively, much thinner sleeves can be electroplated to produce structural coatings. In one example, a nanocrystalline Ni coating was designed to provide both corrosion protection and inelastic buckling resistance [10]. Because the ultra-high strength material was optimally located at the furthest distance from the neutral bending axis, only a thin coating of 50 µm was needed to double the inelastic buckling resistance of the 1.13 mm x 0.63 mm cross-section plain carbon steel struts [10]. Overall, the mechanical performance increase that can be obtained through electrodeposition depends on a complex interaction between the starting cellular architecture and the nanocrystalline sleeves.

A detailed mineralogical study was carried out to characterize the products generated in a conventional copper refinery anode slimes treatment circuit. The anode slimes, which are first leached in sulphuric acid media under an oxygen pressure to dissolve the copper and much of the tellurium, were found to contain various Ag-Cu selenides, PbSO4, Ag, Au and BaSO4. The resulting Ag2Se, Ag3AuSe2, Se, Au, PbSO4, BaSO4, SnO2 and silicate-rich leach residue is dried and pelletized. It is subsequently roasted to convert the selenium to Ag2SeO3, volatile SeO2 and water soluble Na2SeO4. The roasted product, which was found to consist of Ag2Se, PbSe, PbSO4, BaSO4, Ag3AuSe2, Au and Sn02, is smelted and refined in a Dore furnace to produce a Dore metal that contains a (Ag,Au,Pd,Cu,Pt) alloy together with traces of CuO and a Cu-Pb oxide phase. Parting plant mud shown to contain AgC1, Ag, Au, (Au,Ag,Pd), Ag2Cu2O3 and Ag20, and scrubber mud containing PbSO4 and AgC1 are also fed to the Dore furnace. The Dore furnace sequentially separates a silica slag which was found to consist of Ag, Sn02, BaSO4, Pb-Sb oxide, Fe-Sb-Ni-Cr oxide and a Pb-rich silicate phase, a soda-rich slag containing Na2CO3.H2O and Na2(Se,Te)03, and a niter slag containing Na2TeO3, Na2(Se,Te)03 and a Na-Te-Se-Pb-Ba-Cu oxide phase. The Dore metal is electrorefined in Moebius cells to yield high-purity silver and a gold mud which was shown to consist of a (Au,Ag,Pd,Cu,Pt) alloy and traces of CuO. Silver is leached from the gold mud and the resulting gold sand is cast into anodes and electrorefined in Wohlwill cells to produce pure gold.

Design and validation of an integrated guidance system for articulated ground vehicles is investigated. The development of an autonomous industrial vehicle must take into the account the specific geometry of these vehicles; they can be composed of a tractor with 1 or 2 trailers or of articulated type like LHD. Moreover the tractor-trailers type vehicles can have on-axle hitch configuration or positive/negative off axle configuration. The path-tracking of a tractor-trailer vehicle in restricted space is presented and discussed in this paper. Recent results obtained in simulation and validated by experimentation are also presented. These studies can lead to better ways of maneuvering an articulated vehicle in a restricted space or automatically executing of docking and parking maneuvers

Developing a hydrometallurgical process that can overcome the refractory nature of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) to leaching still eludes the minerals industry, despite major research efforts spanning decades. The several leaching experiments of this ore in sulfuric acid tend toward the same conclusion that the precipitation of elemental sulfur or iron containing species are the main dissolution inhibitors. Describing both the electrolyte composition and the various solid phases in equilibrium for the Fe-H2SO4-H2O system is essential to overcome this issue and to find an operating window. According to the thermodynamic models and to the thermodynamic data, we demonstrate, in this study, the need to use the Specific ion Interactive Theory (SIT) model to describe complex electrolytic systems through a limited number of parameters. Hence, the binary interactions for our case study have to be defined and estimated. This work develops a methodology to determine these parameters of the SIT model up to 90°C and an acid concentration of 1 mol/kg from published data for H2SO4-H2O and Fe(II)-H2SO4-H2O sub-systems or from new experimental data for the Fe(III)-H2SO4-H2O one. This method will eventually be applied to copper systems to lead to a thermodynamic description of the complete CuFeS2-H2SO4-H2O system. INTRODUCTION A leaching process consists in the dissolution of a solid phase into an aqueous medium in order to extract compounds of interest. It is a key step in the hydrometallurgical processes used in the primary production and recycling of metal components. One of the main leaching issues is the formation of passivating layers on the surface of solid particles, whose consequence is a partial or total hindrance of the dissolution. The leaching of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in sulfuric acid is a prime example. No industrial solution for the atmospheric pressure leaching of this ore has been developed to date because of passivation phenomena caused by the formation of elemental sulfur or iron-containing precipitates on the surface of the particles (Li, Kawashima, Li, Chandra, & Gerson, 2013). In the 1970s, the Pourbaix diagrams established for the Cu-Fe-S-H2O system at 25°C for low concentrated solutions (Garrels & Christ, 1965; Peters, 1976) agreed that copper and iron are fully dissolved at high potential and in acidic medium (pH < 4). However, they neglected the many stable solid phases that can form in these conditions. In addition, the Pourbaix diagrams of chalcopyrite in water, calculated with two recent databases (FactPS and Thermoddem 2017) associated to FactSage and PhreeqC softwares respectively, show large discrepancies at 75°C (Figure 1). Indeed, at high potential, FactSage predicts the formation of goethite FeOOH at a pH value of 1, while PhreeqC predicts the formation of jarosite (H3O)[Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6] for pH greater than 2.5.

Copper sulfide is the main mining resources in Chile, and most of this metal is obtained via pyrometallurgical extraction in seven copper smelter plants, which extends from the northern Atacama desert to the central part of the country. In 2002, 1,522,000 metric tons of fine copper were produced, with a notorious environmental impact due to the large amount of slag generated, including transportation and disposing problems. Therefore, there is a great interest in finding alternative uses in order to give additional value to the slag. This is a total project development concept, which consider residues as new resources where new components could be obtained, improving sustainability in mining activities and also ensuring clean production processes. Thus, the present work shows a review of copper slag characterization as well as several ways of utilization, including compact material for road and railway installation, part of admixtures in concrete.

"This paper deals with the prediction of locked cycle flotation results from data developed from individual batch tests. A postulate is made that the distribution of material in a separation stage is determined by the chemical conditions and the flotation time and that this distribution can be characterized by split factors which are constants for a fixed set of conditions. With this premise, it is demonstrated that a steady state balance can be calculated for a circuit.Although the necessary equations can be solved algebraically, a computer program was written that uses an iterative tec1nique to arrive at the steady state balance. The program is written so that a variety of circuits can readily be simulated.A number of examples are examined to demonstrate the validity of this simulation procedure. The sensitivity of the material balance to changes in the split factors was examined. Data developed from different flowsheets is presented on sulfide ores, on copper-nickel separation and on silver flotation,"

STEEPROCK LAKE (Figure 1) lies about two miles north of Atikokan, a village approximately one hundred and forty miles west of Fort William and one hundred miles east of Fort Frances on the Canadian National railway. The possible presence of hematite beneath the waters of Middle arm was inferred by early geological investigators (1890-1903) from the dense hematite float found on the southerly shores of this portion of the lake (1). A dip-needle survey of Middle arm, undertaken in the winter of 1930-31 by J. G. Cross, indicated two areas of high magnetic attraction which Mr. Cross thought might be due to magnetic iron oxides associated with possible hematite bodies. Bedrock could not be reached by the ineffectual hand-drilling so courageously attempted, and further work was abandoned. It was not until 1937 that Mr. Jos. Errington, of Toronto, convinced of the possibilities, determined to support Mr. Cross to the extent of several thousand feet of drilling. During the winter of 1937-38, holes Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 13 were put down (see Figure 1). The first four of these holes demonstrated that the areas of magnetic attraction outlined by the dip-needle survey east of the Narrows and southwest of Elbow point were due to ash rock (2). As a result, Mr. Cross decided to investigate the bordering areas of low magnetic attraction and selected a location near the high ferruginous lime (3) point in the northeast of Middle arm. Dense, hard hematite beneath approximately 350 feet of water and clay was struck in the first hole, and, before the end of the winter&apos;s drilling, hematite had been encountered in holes Nos. 6 to 13 along a straight line 700 feet in length (see Figure 1). In the meantime, the Steerola ( 4) Exploration Company had been formed to continue development and already, in the spring of 1938, W. D. Neeland, the Company geologist, had come to the conclusion that the most probable location for possible hematite was at the ash-lime contact. Accordingly, during the summer, drilling was continued off-shore in holes Nos. 15, 25, and 27 (see Figure 2) toward possible hematite bodies inferred by Mr. Neeland.

The primary arsenic minerals in the uranium ore processed at the McClean Lake Operation are rammelsbergite, niccolite and gersdorffite. During processing, a large fraction (80 - 95%) of these reduced minerals is oxidized and dissolves primarily as As5+ in the leachate solution. In the tailings preparation circuit the dissolved As5+ is precipitated as a poorly crystalline form of the mineral scorodite. Following subaqueous deposition in the tailings management facility, a temporal rise and fall in arsenic pore water concentrations has been observed. This is due to the oxidation of the residual quantities of reduced arsenic minerals initially present in the tailings sediment. The XANES (x-ray absorption near edge spectrometry) technique has shown that the As1- is gradually oxidized to As3+ and then finally As5+ in the tailings sediment. This oxidation process results in a temporary accumulation of As3+ in solution and is the source of the rise and fall in arsenic concentration observed.

"The properties of Base Metal Mining Corporation are in Yoho Park about 2 1/2 miles northeast of Field; British Columbia; on the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway. There are actually two mines; the Monarch on mount Stephen and the Kicking Horse on mount Field; separated by the steep valley of Kicking Horse river. The outcrops of the orebodies range from 4; 900 feet to 5; 300 feet above sea-level. The concentrator is situated below the Monarch mine and is connected to the main portal by an aerial tramway. The ore from the Kicking Horse mine is conveyed by aerial tramway to a storage bin on the main highway and is then trucked to the concentrator.During the construction of the Canadian Pacific railway through Kicking Horse valley, galena float was found at the base of mount Stephen. The East Monarch outcrop was staked in 1894. The outcrop of the West Monarch ore body on the cliff face of mount Stephen was not discovered until 1916. The Kicking Horse orebodies on mount Field were discovered a few years later. In 1912, a 75-ton concentrator was erected, which operated at intervals until 1924. During this period approximately 42,000 tons were mined and milled, largely from the East Monarch orebody. In 1928, the Base Metal Mining Corporation, Limited, was formed to take over the Monarch and Kicking Horse mines. A 300-ton differential flotation concentrator was erected and production started in the autumn of 1929. In a very short time, however, the low price of metals forced the mill to shut down until August 1933. From 1929 to 1935, when the mill again ceased operation, a total of 256,500 dry tons of ore, averaging 1.59 oz. silver per ton, 9.7 per cent lead, and 12.6 per cent zinc, was mined and milled, largely from the West Monarch orebody. After a period of further underground development, the concentrator reopened in 1940 and is still in operation. From 1940 to the end of 1944, 354,363 tons of ore was milled, averaging 5.32 per cent lead and 10.47 per cent zinc."

"This study investigates the effect of energy/power input on the flotation of a platinum ore in a pilot-scale oscillating grid flotation cell. Oscillating grids generate near ideal hydrodynamic environments, characterised by turbulence which is relatively homogeneous and isotropic. Secondary rougher feed and primary cleaner tail streams were floated in a pilot-scale oscillating grid flotation cell at power inputs from 0 to 2.5 W/kg, using 0.50 and 1.50 mm bubbles. From this study one may conclude that the effect of energy/power input on the flotation rate is strongly dependent on the particle and bubble size. Flotation rates generally increase with increasing particle size and decreasing bubble size. Increasing energy input generally leads to an increase in the flotation rate for finer particles and an optimum flotation rate for intermediate & coarse particles. Optimum conditions for intermediate/coarse platinum ore particles are using small bubbles at low energy inputs, or large bubbles at higher energy inputs. These results suggest that higher energy inputs are generally beneficial for the flotation of platinum ores as these consist predominantly of finer particles (-75 µm) and most industrial flotation applications operate with larger bubbles (1.0-2.0 mm).INTRODUCTIONThere is a considerable body of experimental and theoretical evidence to suggest that energy/power input plays an important role in flotation kinetics, particularly in the finer particle sizes where flotation efficiency is poor (Deglon, 2005). A number of excellent studies into the effect of energy on flotation kinetics have been carried out in impeller stirred cells (Ahmed and Jameson, 1985; Deglon, 2002; Pyke et al., 2003; Newell and Grano, 2006). Investigations using this type of cell have a number of limitations. The impeller influences particle suspension, bubble break-up and agitation in the cell. In addition, turbulence is highly inhomogeneous and anisotropic, with power intensities near the impeller orders of magnitude higher than those found elsewhere in the cell (Deglon, 1998; Koh and Schwarz, 2003; Schubert, 1999, 2008). These limitations have resulted in the development of novel cells for the investigation of energy input."

OwnershipGulf Minerals Canada Limited discovered the Rabbit Lake deposit in 1968. Mining operations began in 1975and were operated by Gulf until purchased by Eldorado Nuclear Limited in 1982. In 1988, Eldorado merged with Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) to form Cameco-A Canadian Mining &. Energy Corporation. The new corporation is one of the world &apos;s largest uranium companies.Cameco&apos;s $1.5 billion in assets include the Rabbit Lake uranium mine (Cameco 100010); the Key Lake uranium mine (Cameco 66.67%; Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited 33.33%); the Cluff Lake uranium mine (Cameco 20%; Amok Ltd. 80%); the Fuel Services Division at Blind River and Port Hope, Ontario (Cameco 100%); and a 100%); and a 48.75% interest in the Cigar Lake uranium deposit which is now at the test mining stage (Cogema Canada Ltd . 32.625% ; Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Limited 12.875%; Corono Grande 3.75%; Korea Electric Power Corporation 2%). In addition, Cameco is involved in a number of base and precious metal explor ation projects."

Introduction The Britannia mine is at Britannia Beach, on Howe sound, approximately thirty miles from Vancouver. The first claims were staked in 1898, and a local company was formed at that time to develop them. In 1904, Mr. Grant B. Schley became actively interested in the property and in the following year the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, was incorporated to operate it. This Company was taken over a few years later by the Howe Sound Company, Limited. The mine comprises five more or less separate ore-bodies, which have produced approximately 20,000,000 tons of ore to date. The East Bluff ore-body, with which the present paper deals, is well suited to large-scale mining by means of carefully placed powder blasts. It covers approximately an acre and lies in the slate footwall, in a bay produced by a fault. The hanging-wall side, on the west, forms the face of the Bluff glory-hole, which extends to the 1,200 level. A portion of this ore was available for breaking into this old glory-hole, below which four bulldoze chambers could quickly be built. Mining of this block is complicated by a very soft footwall, which &apos;runs&apos; badly when broken. In stoping, care is taken to guard against the hazard of dilution by deliberately leaving a small portion of ore on the footwall. Some of this will undoubtedly be lost, but it is hoped to recover a fair amount of it after the major drawing is completed. The deposit occurs in a greenstone which has been highly silicified following brecciation. The chief minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite. Concentrates of copper, zinc, and pyrite are made at the mill. The average grade of ore runs 0.7 per cent copper, 1.5 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold per ton. The rock, which is practically a chert, is extremely hard, but shatters well. Both in stoping and drifting, holes must be closely spaced and powder used generously. Development When development work started in the East Bluff, there were no raises and only one drift on each level in this section of the mine. After blocking out the ore by thorough diamond drilling, a production of two thousand tons per day was set as a goal. To obtain this tonnage from so small an area required a great deal of carefully planned and well timed development work.

The slags generated in the copper conversion process are mainly composed of Cu2O-Fe2O3-SiO2 with the compounds CaO and Al2O3 in concentrations up to 10 wt%. The present work contributes to the knowledge of the conversion process, generating experimental data for the diagrams of phases Cu2O-Fe2O3- SiO2-Al2O3 and Cu2O-Fe2O3-SiO2-CaO. The experiments were carried out in a tubular furnace at temperatures of 1150°C and 1200°C under a condition of saturation with tridymite. Once the equilibrium was reached, the samples were fast quenched in water. The phases in the samples were observed in a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the elemental composition of the phases analyzed by means of Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) detectors. The addition of Al2O3 and CaO into the Cu2O-Fe2O3- SiO2 system resulted in an appreciable displacement of the liquidus lines, corresponding to an expansion of the liquid in the tridymite primary phase field. INTRODUCTION The conversion process of copper consists of oxidizing Fe and S present in mattes with 60 to 65wt% Cu (up to 16wt% Fe). This process is separated into two stages: 1- Slag blowing: Fe is oxidized, the addition of a flux such as SiO2 (silica) forms a second liquid phase called slag, this phase is removed from the furnace; 2-Copper blowing: in this stage, the matte with low concentration of Fe (<1% w/w) is again oxidized to remove S as SO2 in the exhaust gases. The product of these two processes is the formation of Copper Blister (> 98wt% Cu) (Schlesinger et al., 2011). Unlike the aforementioned conventional processes, in most Chilean smelters, conversion Peirce- Smith Furnaces are loaded with high copper matte (70–75wt% Cu) (Henao & Moyano, 2016). Due to the low concentration of iron in these matte (up to 5wt%), it is considered that separating the conversion process in two stages is neither operational nor environmentally convenient. Therefore, the process is carried out in a single stage (Pradena et al., 2006), generating a slag phase with a high percentage of Cu2O (wt%Cu>40).

Anode or fire refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anode. Part of this process purifies liquid copper by reducing its dissolved oxygen with a natural gas-steam mixture. Until now there have been no transient models of this process coupling the injected gas jet mass transport with its chemical reactions. A transient, 1D flow, chemical reaction model was made to estimate the time-dependent behavior of anode copper composition, soot formation, and the transient gas jet composition along its height. Model estimates were made for reduction rate, soot emission rate, and exergy loss and destruction distributions for two melt temperatures and a range of steam addition rates. It was found that increases to melt temperature and steam addition rate increased reduction rate and decreased soot emission, while having little effect on exergetic performance. Estimates for reduction histories were compared to industrial data. INTRODUCTION Anode/fire refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anodes; it is essential for removing dissolved gases which cause porosity in cast anodes. Despite its significance, the open literature appears devoid of any transient models of the entire process; furthermore, there are very little published process data with which to validate any models made. This dual dearth of modelling work and process data inhibits studies of the tradeoffs between process and performance changes, desirable for decreasing reduction time and soot formation as well as quantifying changes in the exergy losses and destructions of the process. This work introduces a reduced-order, transient model of reduction during fire refining, examines performance trends with operating conditions, and compares model estimates with industrial data. Overview of anode refining The purpose of anode refining is to produce liquid copper which can be cast with minimal gas porosity, which disrupts the downstream electrorefining process. Dissolved sulfur is removed first, then oxygen, by reactions with different injected gases. The removal of oxygen (the reduction step) is the subject of this proceeding and is effected by the bubbling of natural gas, typically mixed with steam, through the melt from tuyeres. A typical refining run reduces dissolved oxygen from 3000 ppm to 300 ppm in 2–3 hours (Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011). The refined copper is then cast as anodes. Figure 1 shows a schematic of the furnace vessel.

"Two modified centrifugal flotation cells (CFC), Q2 and Q3 models, have been developed for froth flotation. The operating mechanism of Q2 uses a rotating bowl to create a centrifugal force on the feeding slurry. Froth concentrate is collected on the central top of the cell and tailing is discharged along the top edge of the rotating bowl. The Q3 utilizes a vertical rotating feed pipe to introduce the feed slurry into a stationary flotation column cell. A centrifugal force is also created by a rotating pipe for the feeding slurry. Froth concentrate floats over the cell and tailing discharges through the bottom of the cell. The centrifugal force causes the flotation recovery of fine particles from CFC to be higher than from the conventional cell. The major operating variables of CFC are the rotating speed, air flow rate into feed slurry, and slurry feeding rate etc. Flotation tests have been carried out on synthetic mixtures of galena-silica and chalcopyrite-silica, as well as some natural base metal ore samples. Parallel tests were also conducted on a conventional flotation cell. The comparative test results demonstrated that both Q2 and Q3 have the advantage of higher recovery of finer than 10 µm mineral particles, which are very difficult for the conventional non-centrifugal flotation cell to recover. The grade-recovery curves produced from CFC are equivalent to or better than the conventional flotation cell. There is a potential in the future for the CFC to be employed in slime flotation.1. Figure 1 illustrates the design of the original CFC, in which a vertical feeding pipe is attached to the center part of a rotating drum and a stationary shell encloses it to direct the float froth and tailing discharge. The slurry flows down to the bottom of the spinning drum, gets in touch with a screen of air bubbles and then migrates outwards under the effect of centrifugal force. After the mineralized froth enters the rotating cell, it is pushed back to the inner surface. The overflowing froth is collected in the froth launder while the tailing slurry is discharged through orifices along the outer rim of the drum."

"On the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, in Quebec, are located orebodies of low-grade titaniferous magnetite. The Quebec Mining Exploration Company (SOQUEM), who have an interest in the deposits, believed that beneficiation of the could generate sufficient revenue to defray the mining costs and the costs of transporting the ore to a steel production facility. A joint research project of SOQUEM and CANMET investigated alkaline roasting of a magnetic concentrate, followed by leaching of the calcine and separation and recovery of Cr and V by solvent extraction. Aluminum was recovered by precipitation.The present paper describes the roast-leach bench-scale and pilot-plant work leading to the development of the optimum conditions f or the integrated process.A plant flowsheet was developed for the treatment of 5 x 106 tons of magnetic concentrate per annum. Estimates of capital and operating costs were made.Based on a recovery of approximately 90% V, 85% Cr and 75% AI, the total hydrometallurgical plant fixed capital costs, including mining, concentration and shipping, are estimated at $1.021 x 109; the operating costs are estimated at $131.92/ton concentrate. Annual revenue from the Na2CrO4.H2O, V2O5 and A12O3 produced is calculated to be $421 x 106.IntroductionThe Quebec Mining Exploration Company (SOQUEM) acquired in 1968 an interest in four titaniferous magnetite orebodies located in Eastern Quebec. 85 miles north of Mingan on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. The Mingan deposit, with an estimated tonnage of one billion tons, has a reported average grade of 43% Fe, 6.3% Ti , 1.60% Cr, 0.19% V and 6.1% Al with minor amounts of nickel. SOQUEM, on the basis of previous bench-scale data, believed that the recovery of chromium, vanadium and alumina by alkaline roasting would generate sufficient revenue to defray the mining costs and the costs of transporting the ore to a steel production facility on the coast. One of the approaches selected by SOQUEM for beneficiation of the ore consisted of a combination of magnetic concentration followed by alkaline roasting of the calcine."

"A morphological and chemical study of the Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (GCOS) fly ash has been carried out. Extensive scanning electron microscopy, as well as light microscopy, showed that the GCOS fly ash consists of two fractions, one composed of unburnt or partially burnt irregular-shaped carbon particles and an ash fraction composed of transparent and opaque, often coloured, glassy spherical particles-some of them cenospheres (hollow spheres) and the others plerospheres (hollow spheres packed with smaller spheres). Microcrystals (0.1 to 0.3 um long) growing on the inner and outer surfaces of some of the spheres were also noted and found to contain more Fe, Ti, Ni and V than the spheres.The carbon-free GCOS fly ash particle size follows a lognormal distribution, with a geometric median particle size (by count) of3.8um and a geometric standard deviation of 1.84. IntroductionCanada&apos;s current energy situation strongly suggests that oil from the Alberta tar sands deposits will probably be recovered more extensively in the future. Today&apos;s commercially proven technology to recover oil from the Athabasca tar sands, as practised by Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (GCOS), involves two major operations, namely: separation of the bitumen from the sand and upgrading of the bitumen to refinery oil; the production of significant amounts of petroleum coke and sulphur during the bitumen upgrading process. The bulk of the petroleum coke is burnt in boilers to fulfill the energy requirements of the entire operation. The boiler ash, which contains appreciable amounts of metals, such as vanadium, nickel, titanium, iron, aluminum and other elements, is collected in the boiler hoppers and cyclones of the petroleum coke-fired steam generation plants. Thus, as well as representing a petroleum resource, the tar sands represent a resource for vanadium and possibly other metals providing that metal recovery processes can be developed."
