"THE Mindamar zinc-lead-copper mine, owned by Mindamar Metals Corporation Limited, is at Stirling in Richmond County, near the south-eastern shore of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia (Figure I). It is connected by several roads with the Canadian National railway at Sydney and St. Peters.The deposit is said to have been discovered around 1895 as an outcrop in the bed of Copper brook, but the details are obscure. Not until 1925, when it was optioned by American Cyanamid Company, was it developed underground. Between 1927 and 1938, the 1-nine was operated intermittently by The British Metal Corporation (Canada) Limited, and yielded approximately 200,000 tons of ore averaging about IO per cent zinc, 2 per cent lead, I per cent copper, and small quantities of silver and gold. In December 1950, Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited made an agreement with Mindamar Metaî Corporation Limited, which was exploring the old mine, to assume management and prepare the property for production. Production started in April 1952 with a new mill and a new four-compartment shaft, and between that time and the end of 1954 it has totalled 545,347 tons of ore averaging 5·89 per cent zinc, 1·35 per cent lead, 0·66 per cent copper, 0·032 oz. gold, and 2 151 oz. silver.The Mindamar orebodies are irregular lenses and large veins lying within a wide, almost vertical shear zone of remarkable persistency. The shear zone consists mainly of well-foliated sericite schist derived from siliceous siltstone, and it contains a vast amount of dolomite and magne-site of hydrothermal origin. Most of the ore is extremely fine-grained and some of the high-grade material has a conspicuous thinly layered structure. The metallic minerals, in order of decreasing abundance, are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and tennantite; the gangue minerals, in the same order, are dolomite and magnesite, quartz, sericite, talc, chlorite, barite, albite, and alunite.The geological setting of the deposit is shown in Figure 2. Except along streams and lake shores, almost all of the bedrock is concealed by glacial drift. The group of rocks in which the deposit occurs consists principally of greywacke, siltstone, tuff, brecoia, and Javas, and has been correlated lithologically with the Bourinot group of Middle Cambrian age. A short distance west of the mine, these rocks are in contact along the Stirling fault with conglomerate, arkosic sandstone, and quartzite belonging to the Middle River group of Silurian or Devonian (?) age, which elsewhere in the area overlies the Bourinot group unconformably. The large bodies of granitic rocks in the region, and the large lenticular masses of diorite and quartz diorite associated with them, have been assigned by Weeks (5, pp. 68-69) to the Devonian."

The Manganese division of the ERAMET group extracts manganese ore in Gabon and produces manganese alloys for the steel industry. ERAMET has an economic interest to maximize the ore throughput without reducing the lifetime of its manganese mines. This can be achieved by means of research and development leading to innovative ore beneficiation processes. For this purpose, the ERAMET research center has designed and constructed a new pilot plant for ore beneficiation by physical separation processes. This pilot facility was erected within an infrastructural and synergetic framework, including competencies in hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, numerical modelling, analyses and mineral characterization that provide ideal research conditions. After laboratory scale tests, a pilot operation of beneficiation of low grade Mn ore (around 35% Mn) was carried out by jigging of the 1-10 mm fraction. This gravity separation process exploits density differences between the various Mn-bearing minerals such as pyrolusite and lithiophorite as well as gangue minerals such as silicates and iron-hydroxides. Enrichment leads to the production of a marketable product associated with a high mass recovery (53% for the jigging step). However, 20% of pyrolusite and 30% of lithiophorite are lost in the waste. Mineral characterization has shown microtextural complexities, but grinding the ore to approach the liberation mesh was not an option due to commercially defined constraints given by the ferro-alloy industry. Recovery of the Mn-bearing minerals or adjustments of the feed grain size (6.3-10 mm) are two potential areas of process improvements identified by means of Qemscan® mineral characterization. This paper details the process tested on a pilot scale (0.5 t/h), which has led to a significant increase in the beneficiation of a low grade Mn ore.

"The fluidized bed at Division Ministro Hales (DMH) division of Codelco in Calama, Chile is currently the largest operating roaster for partial roasting of arsenic rich copper concentrates. The roaster converts the Mina Ministro Hales (MMH) enargite rich (Cu3AsS4) copper concentrates into calcine with a low arsenic content that is suitable for mixing with other copper concentrates feeding a flash furnace. The plant sets a new standard for the processing of arsenic rich concentrates, both from the quality of the calcine as well as the environmental performances. The process technology and expertise are based on the solid practical experience of treating arsenic rich concentrates from both the Boliden smelter and Outotec.The partial roasting process is located next to the mine and concentrator and includes a sulphuric acid plant with auxiliary equipment. The produced calcine has an arsenic content significantly below target and the residual sulphur meets the requirement of the flash furnace. The plant operates with high efficiency cyclones resulting in a low amount of calcine passing to the hot electrostatic precipitator (HESP). The small flow of HESP calcine dust can be combined with the low arsenic calcine and still meet the flash furnace feed arsenic requirements.SO2 formed during roasting is converted into sulphuric acid, while volatized arsenic is recovered in the wet gas cleaning section of the acid plant along with a large proportion of antimony present in the MMH concentrate. Arsenic is stabilized as calcium arsenate and sent to disposal at a specially prepared site.The present production rate (September/October 2015) is close to or higher than the original maximum design capacity of the plant.INTRODUCTIONMineralogyThe mineralogy of an ore and concentrate is important, since there is a direct link between roasting performance and concentrate mineralogy. The MMH concentrate has a good combination of minerals that makes the roasting process efficient and flexible. The main minerals are pyrite, enargite and chalcocite (Figure 1). The inert content is about 15% and consists mainly of silicate and alumina based minerals. The lead content is very low and this is desirable, since the presence of even a small amount of lead will cause a substantial increase of sintering during roasting."

Extraction by organic solvents is a chemical process in which metal species in the aqueous phase react with an organic reagent to form an organometallic com- plex, thus, the metal species leave the aqueous phase and enter the organic phase from which it can be stripped back in the aqueous phase to obtain a pure and a concentrated solution. The metal in the organic phase is not bound to carbon atoms as in organometallic compounds but to oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, or hydrogen by a co-ordination (dative) bond (Habashi, 1999).Solvent extraction was used for the first time in hydrometallurgy in connec- tion with the special and urgent materials requirements of nuclear energy during World War II. A plant was constructed in the United States for the preparation of high-purity uranyl nitrate solution. In this plant, the yellow cake (a high-grade sodium or ammonium uranate) was dis- solved in HNO,, and uranium was selec- tively extracted by ether then stripped by water to give a concentrated solution of pure uranyl nitrate. This was gradually followed by developing methods for other high-priced metals such as plutonium, thorium, niobium, tantalum, zirconium, hafnium, boron, beryllium, and molybde num. The second step took place in the 1960s when solvent extraction was applied for the first time to extract a rela- tively cheap metal-copper. At present, solvent extraction technology is wide- spread, well accepted, and highly efficient. Presently about 60% of the world's nickel resources are tied up with lateritic ores while about 25% of the world's nickel is produced from sulphides. Based on this the industry has to focus on improving lateritic nickel economics in order to maintain the high use of the metal worldwide. In 1997 three junior mining companies in Australia organised finance against all odds and commenced development of three separate nickel and cobalt extraction plants treating lateritic nickel ores. All three projects utilise similar pressure acid leaching (PAL) technologies while each has unique metal recovery technologies All projects have experienced numerous processing and maintenance related difficulties such that full ore throughput has been reached by only one operation after five years. This shortfall in performance has caused the owners considerable angst and financial pain. In 2000 Cawse went into receivership and was purchased by an international corporation. Recently, Bulong also went into receivership and has undergone an orderly shutdown, awaiting sale to a new buyer. Murrin Murrin has settled with its financiers and is in a position to operate as planned for many years forward. This paper will discuss a number of the technical difficulties that affect the ore preparation, PAL and solution treatment circuits of these plants. The objective is to identify the cause of some of the difficulties and propose possible solutions so that the next generation of lateritic operations can emerge as technically and, more importantly, economic successes. A number of these process improvements have been identified by the existing operators and in many instances have been or are being implemented into the existing operations.

Introduction The property of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, is situated on the east side of Howe sound, about six miles from its head. It is roughly thirty miles by water from Vancouver, one of the important ports of the Pacific and the industrial and financial centre of British Columbia. Howe sound is navigable for ocean-going vessels and Britannia Beach is a daily port of call for the commodious boats of the Union Steam-ship Company, sailing from Vancouver. Few mines are so ideally situated or have so many or varied natural advantages. Copper was first found on Britannia mountain in 1888, by Forbes, but it was not until 1898 that five claims were staked here by Oliver Furry, a trapper. It is from these claims that the major production during the past thirty years has come. In 1900 the Britannia Copper Syndicate was formed and development of the property was commenced. In 1903 the late Grant B. Schley obtained control, and through his efforts the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company was organized in 1908 as a subsidiary of the Howe Sound Company. Since that time, a persistent and progressive policy has been followed, which has resulted in a prolonged and profitable operation. The country in the immediate vicinity of the mine is marked by strong relief, with mountains rising abruptly from tide-water to elevations of 5,000 feet and more. Two broad transverse valleys deeply dissect the area. These are the valleys of Britannia creek and Furry creek. The region has under-gone prolonged and relatively recent glaciation. Over much of the surface there is deep overburden and dense vegetation. The geology of the mine and vicinity has been described in reports by S. J. Schofield (1), H. T. James (2), J. G. Barry, and others (3). The present writer is in accord with much of this literature on Britannia, but during recent years, extended observations made underground have shown that the 'quartz porphyry', or 'mine porphyry', of several of the earlier writers is not the host rock to the commercial mineralization; and he contends that the mineralization occurs in highly altered phases of a complex series of ruffs, flows, and pyroclastics and their autoclastic metamorphosed products.

Among the many interesting problems of the pre-Cambrian of the Canadian Shield is that of the origin of certain types of gneisses which are intimately associated with the granites on the one hand and with the metamorphic rocks of known sedimentary origin on the other. The observations recorded in this paper on the structure and composition of these ancient rocks found in a small part of northern Quebec may help to lead to a clearer understanding of the way in which they were formed and also constitute a contribution to the regional geology and petrography of a district for which little detailed information is available. The area considered is located near the Ashuapmuchuan, or Chamuchuan, river about 180 miles north-northwest of the city of Quebec, and therefore well within the Canadian Shield. Although most attention was devoted to the rocks along this river from the 57th to the 70th mile above its entrance into Lake St. John, a few observations on other localities to the north and northwest of that lake will be included. The field work was done in the summer of 1924 in cooperation with L. W. MacNaughton, E. S. Roberts, and B. M. Shaub, all of Cornell University. The party ascended the Ashuapmuchuan river by canoe and spent about a month near the mouth of Stacker, or Brochet, river, the outlet of the lake of the same name, returning by way of Mikoasas river. The writer wishes to express his obligation to his associates for their co-operation in the field and for their permission to publish the results. He is especially indebted to B. M. "The effect of extended ball milling has been studied for two industrial processes: (1) the processing of metal sulphide concentrates; and (2) the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite to synthetic rutile. The plant concentrates were a gold ore with 128 g/t Au of which 8% was non-refractory and a zinc concentrate with copper impurities.The gold concentrate showed complete dissolution of the gold bearing minerals after milling giving almost complete gold liberation. The zinc concentrate showed almost all of the sulphides had solubilized leaving the gangue and elemental sulphur. A study of pure pyrite and arsenopyrite shows that selective dissolution should be possible by a simple leaching process directly after milling.The milling of ilmenite and coal together results in a temperature decrease of 150°C in the subsequent carbothermic reduction of ilmenite, in addition to improving both the rate of reaction and the selectivity of reduction to rutile. IntroductionAlmost all mineral processing plants use mills for the size reduction of particles prior to physical and chemical processing. When continuing beyond size reduction the energy transferred causes deformation, breakage and realloying of particles giving a steady-state particle size. The breaking also causes increasing damage to the crystal structure by formation of smaller grains giving an increasing number of grain boundaries and increasing crystalline defects due to deformation. The increasing number of grain boundaries and defects leads to increased reactivity, which can be seen directly by a reaction within the mill, or indirectly, via a decrease in the subsequent annealing temperature required for reaction."

Introduction It is thirty-odd years since I first entered the mining field by working underground at Anyox, which makes 1t clear that I can qualify as one of the older generation and claim the privilege of dealing in generalities and broad impressions. In this position I find it interesting to re~ view the salient changes that have taken place during the past quarter-century and indulge in some speculations concerning the future, with the hope that my comments may be of value to others engaged in the field of mining geology. As indicated by the title, the treatment is a perspective from a single viewpoint rather than an attempt to give a complete and impartial analysis. This plan, while deficient in some respects, has the advantage of being more specific than one based on .a. compilation of opinions. An additional advantage is brevity, which would be difficult to obtain on a subject of this scope if it were viewed from all angles. In conformity with the general plan, specific references to the literature have been avoided as much as possible, although a number of publications of general nature are listed at the end of the paper. This procedure is intended to give credit to the sources used without making them in any way responsible for the interpretation. The starting point for the discussion is the situation as it existed twenty-five years ago, when, as a recent graduate, I first had a fairly complete picture of it. However there is one impression of an earlier; stage that seems worth mentioning. In one of my first courses in geology the statement was made that some of the leading authorities of the previous generation, who guided geological thought at about the beginning of the century, were inclined to question the value of an association with mining. This attitude was no doubt exceptional, and certainly it was not adopted by the students who laid the groundwork for mining geology in North America. But its existence even in a limited circle is significant m showing how far the application of geology has advanced as the result of the investigations started during the first part of this century.

"In October 1984, Rocanville Division began using a stacking system to handle potash mill tailings. Previous to this date, mill tailings were slurried to the top of the tailings pile and allowed to debrine while flowing down the pile. With the new stacking system, slurried tailings are fed to mobile stackers. The stackers consist of cyclone packs to debrine the tailings and drag conveyors with screw discharges to deposit the tailings onto the existing pile. This paper deals with the various aspects of the project from conception to its present state.IntroductionPrevious to 1984, when the stacking project was first implemented, potash mill tailings were handled as follows. Mill tailings were first debrined to approximately 65010 solids using a cyclone cluster. The cyclone underflows were then introduced onto a vacuum scroll filter table. Here the tailings were further debrined and discharged into the disposal tank where the tailings were reslurried with reclaim brine and pumped to the tailings disposal site. At the disposal site the slurry was discharged onto the tailings pile and by a natural settling process the tailings were debrined with the brine ultimately collected in the reclaim brine ponds. The shape and profile of the tailings pile was controlled by building salt dykes to control the flow of the discharged tailings slurry. As the tailings pile grew in height, booster pumps were added to the disposal system."

A new, continuous fire refining process for copper has been developed and tested at the 5 tph pilot scale. During oxidation, the blister copper flows through a packed bed of crushed refractory bricks counter-current to a hot oxygen containing gas. The resulting desulphurized copper flows then directly into a packed bed of charcoal for deoxidation. By controlling the air to natural gas ratio, both temperature and reducing conditions can be controlled. Based on extensive laboratory scale measurements of the rate of copper oxidation and reduction, the process concept was developed aided by process modeling and simulation. The industrial-pilot scale installation built at the ENAMI Paipote smelter in Chile, consists of two cylindrical, compact reactors, operating in line, with a designed capacity of 5 t/h of blister copper. The results of the industrial-pilot tests confirmed the feasibility of the new process. The blister copper processing capacity was increased to 10 t/h with satisfactory sulphur removal. The degree of oxidation as well the copper temperature was controlled with relative ease. The specially designed siphon block allowed for smooth tapping of the oxidized copper and separation of refining slag. The reduction of oxidized copper in the packed bed of charcoal appeared to be very effective while control of the degree of reduction according to the height of the bed ensured control of the oxygen content in the refined copper at the required level.

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. The purpose of this paper is to outline a recent development in ground fault protection. The paper deals with the A problems of both grounded and ungrounded systems, with regard to hazards to personnel and equipment, and shows that the increased sensitivity and speed of operation of this new detector results in increased safety to personnel and reduced stresses on equipment, and permits the detection of leakage currents before they become serious faults. The detector can be applied to all distribution systems, either A.C. or D.C., up to 15 kv., and the detector itself can be tested at regular intervals without interrupting line circuits. T HERE is always controversy among engineers as to whether distribution systems should be grounded or ungrounded. There are many experi-enced engineers on both sides of this controversy, and each have valid reasons for their choice

"Dorbyl Heavy Engineering has been manufacturing winders since 1949 mostly for the South African mining industry.Table 1 shows that the vast majority of winders have been double drum winders. At the greater depths with larger ropes being employed, it became apparent that multi-rope winders would be needed. The high stress variation in Koepe winder ropes at great depths especially beyond 2000 m, ruled out this possibility. Thus the original concept was borne for the Blair multi-rope winder where the stress level variations in the rope would be as per the well known, tried and tested double drum winder. The Blair multi-rope was also devised to increase payload by using multiple ropes.With the increasing costs of transporting men and material coupled with fact that orebodies are getting deeper, various feasibility studies have been carried out by South African mining houses. For this reason Dorbyl Heavy Engineering has done conceptual design work of both double drum and Blair multi-rope winders with diameters up to 8.5 m dia (still well within our manufacturing capabilities). These feasibility studies have looked at depths approaching 4000 m*.This paper covers the typical duties leading to the choice of single drum, double drum, Koepe and Blair multi-rope hoists on South African gold mines. A brief synopsis of Dorbyl hoists in use in the South African mining industry, with some indications of future trends, will be discussed.With current installed depths of wind approaching 2500 m, the Blair multi-rope hoist has been used extensively for the heavier payloads.Some of the main considerations pertinent to the design of the Blair multi-rope hoist are illustrated together with the implications of using this type of hoist to winding depths of3000 m to 4000 m in the foreseeable future."

"Maximizing the value of each tonne of processed ore is the goal for all operations. Cyanidation processing of gold-copper ores has been challenging since its first use in 1889. The current practice treats a bleed or the total flow of mill solution to recover copper as copper sulfide (by sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening), or to recover the cyanide (by acidification-volatilization neutralization). The process presented uses the adsorption of copper cyanide by carbon and the selective elution of copper from carbon to concentrate copper into a smaller stream. Copper contained in the smaller stream is precipitated as copper cyanide.RÉSUMÉ Toutes les exploitations ont pour objectif commun d’optimiser la valeur de chaque tonne de minerai traité. Depuis sa première utilisation en 1889, la méthode de traitement par cyanuration des minerais aurifère et cuprifère s’est révélée complexe. La pratique actuelle traite la saignée ou le débit total d’une solution de traitement du concentrateur pour récupérer le cuivre sous la forme de sulfure de cuivre (par sulfuration, acidification, recyclage et épaississement), ou pour récupérer le cyanure (par acidification, volatilisation et neutralisation). Le procédé présenté dans cet article utilise l’adsorption sur charbon actif de la solution de cyanure de cuivre et l’élution sélective du cuivre depuis le charbon pour concentrer le cuivre en un plus petit jet. Le cuivre contenu dans ce plus petit jet est précipité sous forme de cyanure de cuivre.INTRODUCTIONProcessing gold-copper ores by cyanidation has been a cost-control challenge since the cyanidation process was first used in 1889. Copper cyanide is stable only in the cuprous state, not the cupric. This factor results in the oxidation of a mole of cyanide per mole of nonchalcocite copper extracted. Each mole of copper extracted forms a cyanide complex with a minimum of 3 mol of cyanide. This cyanide-to-copper mole ratio is required to dissolve gold. The oxidation of cyanide and copper complexation with cyanide results in high cyanide consumption for copper-gold ores, which is a significant operating cost.One challenge in processing gold-copper ore is the cost of cyanide related to the extraction of copper. Processing 10,000 t/d of ore containing 1,000 mg/kg copper and 10% copper extraction yields 1,000 kg/d of copper. Currently, processes to remove copper from cyanide leach solution treat either the total flow of the barren or a bleed of the barren. The two processes used for copper-gold ores are sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening (SART), which produces a copper sulfide product for sale; and acidification- volatilization-neutralization (AVR), which recovers the cyanide from a gas and produces a low–cyanide content solution. This low–cyanide content solution can be recycled to the process or might require additional treatment before being disposed from the operation."

"Advances in our knowledge of the petrochemical attributes of deposit environments and of the character and extent of hydrothermal systems associated with certain deposit types has resulted in increased application of lithogeochemistry to exploration programs. Lithogeochemistry can be used to vector an exploration program toward an area of high potential through the use of a series of collapsing scales of analysis from a tectonic subprovince down to a particular stratigraphic segment. In the case of volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits this involves the recognition ofsuitable volcanic domains, and the identification of subvolcanic intrusions and cogenetic felsic extrusive complexes. The recognition of chemical vectors within regional-scale alteration zones and associated chemical sedimentary rocks allows the geologist to identify the stratigraphic units with the most potential for hosting a base metal deposit.An integrated lithogeochemical program requires the judicious use of major, trace and rare-earth element and isotopic analysis. Standard discriminant plots may be employed to identify suitable tectonic and lithologic environments. Analysis of the chemical and mineralogical variations in broad-scale, semi-comfortable alteration zones provides a useful set of vectors to VMS mineralization. These may include contouring raw data, element ratios on XY plots, normalizing data against known rock values, or calculating mass changes in alteration zones."

Environmental regulations require means for controlling emissions of SO2 NOx and particulate when burning coal. The combustion of coal in limestone fluidized beds is one of the most promising techniques for the necessary reduction in emissions. Fluidized-bed firing, furthermore, offers potential economies in capital equipment. The world's largest steam generator applying fluidized-bed techniques was built under the sponsorship of ERDA and installed in Rivesville, West Virginia. This paper describes the design and discusses the start-up and development difficulties which were experienced during the period from initial operation to current readiness for commercial operation. Other developments leading to utility and industrial fluidized-bed steam generating equipment are reviewed. The future potential of this promising technique is discussed.

The Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation requires enormous quantities of bricks each year for its Sydney steel plant operations. Clay brick of all types are purchased, while silica brick is made in the Company's plant at Sydney. A description of this plant was given in a paper presented by H. B. Gillis and F. C. Morrison at the 1938 Annual General Meeting of the Institute. The rock used to make silica brick was for years obtained from a quarry at Leitches Creek, about eighteen miles from Sydney. Due to the gradual deterioration of this deposit, the Corporation was forced to look for other sources of supply. In 1945, the problem was presented to the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and, through the efforts of Dr. A. E. Cameron and Mr. J. P. Messervey, an examination was made of a silica-rock deposit some six miles northwest of Yarmouth, N.S. Preliminary samples proved satisfactory, and arrangements were made with the Department of Mines to ship to the steel plant at Sydney a fifty-ton car load for the purpose of further testing. Brick made from this sample shipment stood up very well in the furnaces. At the same time, two hundred and fifty tons of silica rock from a deposit at Lac Bouchette, Que., were purchased from the Industrial Silica Corporation, and brick made from this rock also was found suitable for our requirements. Comparative transportation costs, however, led to a decision to open the Yarmouth deposit. The silica rock, or quartzite, of this deposit outcrops at Chegoggin point along what is known as the 'Pembroke shore', a northerly trending section of the coast-line at the extreme southwest of the Province, in Yarmouth county. The country here is fairly flat, with elevation averaging about twenty feet above high tide, and is for the most part mantled by a growth of brush and some scrub trees, chiefly small fir. Bed-rock is generally concealed beneath three to four feet of clayey soil, but scattered outcrops of the quartzite indicated that a band of this rock, some 260 feet wide, extended inland in a northeasterly direction from Chegoggin point at least to Utleys lake, a distance of about three miles.
