"Rational exploration requires the prior selection of areas possessing excellent geological potential and minimum hazards to commercial development . Within an over-all strategy of grass-roots exploration, two procedures for selecting areas for (i) coal and (ii) metals exploration are described. The procedures explicitly balance infrastructure requirements and environmental concerns for areas of geological merit not alienated in parks and reserves. Through consensus, priorities are attached to those areas meriting closer scrutiny and field reconnaissance.IntroductionMining companies need to know that having made a potentially economic discovery, they will be allowed to develop it with minimum delay and at reasonable cost. The environment for exploration in British Columbia is complex and recent experience suggests that conditions are not becoming any easier. Conflicts over land use issues, preservation and economic development are common. The high cost of exploration requires that the risks should be offset where possible by: (i) carefully selecting the areas in which to work (ii) conducting operations in a responsible manner, and (iii) working cooperatively with the community of interests. This paper concerns the first action: prior selection of areas.To aid exploration planning at Suncor, a procedure was developed to grade those areas of the province possessing favourable geology according to the ease with which a mine might be developed . This had to be done within the constraints of the company's over-all approach to exploration. This emphasizes ""grass-roots"" exploration of self-generated projects in British Columbia. In addition, having selected a favourable belt of rocks, it is intended to persevere there while steadily adding to the accumulated data base and local experience. Hence, it is intended to concentrate on an area. This implies a long-term commitment to an area which in turn increases the importance of the original selection.Suncor's search is directed to finding base and precious metals in intrusive and volcanic environments, and export quality coal."

"The syngenetic and epigenetic mechanics of sedimentation and deformation of coal seams resulted in various types of internal structure, as listed below:TYPE I-massive structure with evenly distributed coal constituencies of integrated mechanical properties.TYPE II-broad-banded structure, with bright and dull coal bands of differential mechanical properties.TYPE III-heterogeneous structure, with sheared coal bands and partings of sectional mechanical properties.TYPE IV-contortional structure, with refolded coal layers and deteriorated mechanical properties.TYPE V-porous structure of orogenically crushed and pulverized coal, with disintegrated mechanical properties.The study suggests criteria for the estimation of coal seam internal structure (gamma-gamma density log and cracks density log), which might be related to the evaluation of strata stability and coal mineability.IntroductionIt is common knowledge that coal seams have various internal structures due to different syngenetic and epigenetic events. Investigations of the internal structure of coal seams have been carried out in the coal fields of Western Canada, as follows: geological field studies of coal-bearing strata;?,geophysical borehole surveying studies;?,geological borehole logging and crack density;?,underground phenomenological studies of mine structure;?,chemical coal analysis; and?,mechanical testing of coal samples.These investigations eliminated a large number of criteria previously established for the estimation of coal seam internal structure and indicated that, from an engineering point of view, only two of them are sufficient:(I) density of seam profile (inferred from gamma-gamma log);(2) density of crack s (inferred from geological log).On the basis of these criteria, five main structural types of coal seams have been classified, which might be related to mechanics of deformation and ' failure of mine structures."

"World metallurgical coal imports totalled 110million tonnes in 1978. Of this amount, Japan imported 50 million tonnes, making it by far the largest and most important coking coal market . British Columbia and Alberta exported 12.0 million tonnes of coking coal in 1978, or 11% of the world total. Virtually all of these exports were directed to Japan, making up 22% of total imports.Some observers have suggested that because Japan is almost the exclusive buyer of British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coal, the benefits of the coal trade may be primarily on the side of the powerful Japanese buyers. Buttressing this suspicion is the fact that Japanese trading companies have taken substantial equity positions in B.C. coal mines, thus presenting the possibility of non-arms-Iength transfer arrangements. There is then at least some evidence to support the hypothesis that Canada's western coal producers receive prices that are less than would prevail in a more competitive market; that is, that they are exploited.This paper produces evidence that Canada's coals are not underpriced in respect to U.S. and world markets. The conclusion is drawn that British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coals receive prices that are equal to prices known to be competitively determined. This conclusion follows an in-depth analysis of prices, coal qualities and the economic characteristics of all major coals traded in the Japanese market. A by-product of the analysis is an equation capable of predicting the value of any metallurgical coal sold to Japanese buyers, or, for that matter, any buyer. Hopefully, this can be of some use to coal producers in developing their marketing strategies."

"A key element for a successful mining operation is the grinding circuit. It must be reliable, maintainable and must perform to or above design capacities for 95% of the time. Once chosen and installed major modifications are either prohibitive or very expensive. The selection of mills and drive system is probably the single most important decision made within the concentrator complex.Economic studies revealed that the optimum expansion for Lornex was a 68070 increase in plant throughput. This indicated that the new mill would have to be larger than the existing 32-foot mills.The Lornex ore has a wide range of hardness which has a great influence on mill throughput (Table 1). To smooth out the fluctuations, a blending program ha s always been in effect at the mine, coupled with ball charge control for the primary mills. As can be appreciated, an optimum balance is difficult to achieve. A sudden change to so ft ore with a high ball charge puts the mill into jeopardy with a constant speed drive.The blending philosophy would continue after the expansion, but with the addition o f a second primary crusher, it was envisaged to have the new mill process harder ore to maintain production targets. In theory, the new mill would have a proportionally larger ball charge than the existing mills.This scheme makes the new mill vulnerable for processing so ft ore for a fixed speed mill. Thus, variable speed seemed an attractive option.In early 1979 prominent mill manufacturers were invited to submit proposals for the new mill. Fixed and variable speed mills were to be considered with mill size ranging from 32-foot to 36-foot diameter. The proposals were to include the drive, ball charge, % critical speed, couplings, gears, etc. - the complete package. The recommendations were variable with most manufacturers submitting several alternatives. Recommended mill speed varied from 68% to 78% critical. The concept of variable speed was becoming more attractive, Lornex ultimately decided on a twin DC motor drive system for a 34-foot diameter mill.After start-up it was discovered that best throughput occurred at 78% mill critical speed or top speed of the drive motors. The motor speed range was adjusted upward from 186 to 200 rpm. Today the mills operate at 79% critical or a motor speed o f 193.5 rpm.Clearly the selection of the variable speed mill allowed the flexibility to optimize throughput."

"IntroductionThe Hull iron range, comprising the Forsyth, Scott , Baldwin and Lawless properties (Fig. I), is in Gatineau Park, on the outskirt s o f the city of Hull , and about 6 miles (10 kilometres) northwest of the Federal Parliament Buildings.The deposits have been known many years and described numerous times, although the history has been treated lightly in former publications. Total ore shipments have been calculated at 122,700 long tons, of which over 80% were mined before 1900 and 74% in two brief periods: 1870-74 and 1880-82. It is surprising that the period 1870-74 has been overlooked by most authors and 1880-82 ignored altogether. More surprising, the essential data for these two periods are contained in manuscripts of the Robert Bell collection, which must have been available to officers of the Geological Survey o f Canada.The period 1801-1874 ha s already been covered by the writer in ""Pioneer mines”, but much information has come to light since publication. The present paper is therefore based o n new data and a fresh appraisal. However, little additional data were found for the early history (1801-1854) or for the legal cases involving A.H. Baldwin, and these parts were mainly summarized from the relevant sections of the above-mentioned publication.GeologyThe ore deposits are all situated somewhat below the middle of a graphitic, calcitic marble horizon, here folded into a northeast-plunging synform. The Forsyth, Scott and Baldwin deposits are on the south limb of the synform; the Lawless is on the north limb. The marble is underlain by three non-carbonate groups: biotite gneiss with interlayered quartzite (top), granite gneiss and skarn (middle), and biotite-garnet gneiss (bottom). Below these groups is a lower horizon of graphitic, calcitic marble. The whole sequence is Precambrian and has been subjected to high-grade (Grenvillian) metamorphism, but, in the north, is cut by an unmetamorphosed Cambro-Ordovician diabase dyke. "Canada has a per capita GDP second only to Japan among the G7 countries and a positive trade balance which ranks third among the world's major economies. International trade represents a very large part of the national economy and as a proportion of GDP is larger than that of all the other G7 countries with the exception of Germany. On the negative side the Canadian current account deficit relative to the size of the economy is significantly worse than that of all major industrial countries, due mainly to the cost of servicing an immense foreign debt and to a large and worsening negative trade balance in manufacturing.The outflow of money may be reduced by increasing the productivity and competitiveness of those sectors of the economy in which Canada already has a leading competitive position and which have the potential for further growth. The mining industry is uniquely qualified in this respect in that Canada is the western world's largest producer of metals and mineral products and has the geology and the exploration skill to replenish reserves assuming that an adequate level of investment is maintained. In 1989 the minerals industry contributed $8 billion to the country's balance of payments and with the exception of forestry is the only sector of the economy which has shown consistently increasing foreign earnings over the long term.In recent years there has been a decline in exploration in Canada and a significant increase in countries such as Chile. The demand for hard currency to finance the development of the newly emerging capitalist economies of the CIS and Eastern Europe is also driving these countries to seek foreign investment to allow them to exploit their natural wealth more efficiently. Canada is therefore facing growing international competition for risk capital and in the future its trade surplus will probably decline in the face of lower cost foreign production.Canada rightly exercises a high level of environmental control on its mining operations; however a significant deterrent to investment is the fundamentally unjust application of the many provincial and federal environmental laws, under which a mining company, even if it takes every measure to protect the environment, runs the risk of eternal and unlimited future liability. If this situation is not rectified the effect will be an increase in global pollution as mines in countries with more lax application of law and regulations controlling environmental damage replace those of Canada. Tax benefits and incentives are a more efficient means than arbitrary regulations in minimizing environmental damage."

Plotting sets of data collected over time using a frequency-magnitude distribution is common with both earthquake and mining seismology. A Time-Between-Events (TBE) analysis technique simply makes use of the inter-event times and b-values (slopes of the best fit lines on the frequency-magnitude charts) from the same set of data. Four distinct patterns in TBE versus Event Magnitude have been found which suggest whether there are constant seismic sources causing populations of data, or if the smaller and larger events, within the population represent varying seismic sources. Different rates of events, identified as TBE-rates in this study, may suggest whether the events are blast induced, or not. This study was done using actual seismic datasets from hardrock mines in Canada and Australia. This was to verify the applicability of the method to multiple mining environments and to determine the practicality and implications of this methodology to enhance the interpretation of seismic source mechanisms The results of the TBE technique and other proven techniques are combined into a Seismic Mechanism Assessment Worksheet. This is a tool that allows operators to compare trends within seismic datasets with assessments of in-situ rock conditions. The goal is to enhance the understanding of rockmass failure mechanisms.

"Considering the traumatic events of Canadian mining taxation of the 1970s, one wonders at the sanity of anybody who tries to predict what the 1980s might hold for the tax structure of the mining industry. Yet, the author agreed to tackle this task when called upon to do so at the annual meeting of the Quebec Metal Mining Association in June. The text of this ""daring"" speech follows.IntroductionI have been asked to play the part of the oracle at Delphi, and to predict what the 1980s might hold for the Canadian mining industry in terms of taxation. To appreciate the challenge of this difficult assignment, try to imagine someone in my position back in 1972 attempting to forecast the balance of the 1970s. I daresay that ten years ago nobody could possibly have conceived of the devastating and casualty-ridden rollercoaster ride that mining taxation actually took in the 70s. Nevertheless, I shall examine the entrails and try to shed some light on what might happen during the balance of this decade as far as mineral taxation is concerned.If one were to retreat deep into history, one would find that taxation generally served one purpose-namely, to raise revenues for the government. More recently, an important second function has emerged: taxation is increasingly being used as a fiscal tool-a tool intended to mould and shape future events in order to accomplish certain economic, social and political objectives. It is these two main forces-the need (or desire) for revenues and the perceived convenience of using taxation as a fiscal tool-which will continue to shape the tax structure of the future.In our assessment of where taxation of the mining industry may be headed, we should be able to learn something by looking at where we have been."

"IntroductionOne aspect of current research in the Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM) involves the automatic identification of different rock types based on particular drill performance parameter responses. In this paper, the four drill performance parameters of torque, pulldown pressure, rotary speed and penetration rate, were measured from an instrumented rotary blasthole drill during field investigations undertaken at the Fording River Mine, Elkford, British Columbia. The variations in these parameters were subsequently correlated with the corresponding rock types using the results from gamma, neutron and core logs in the same or adjacent boreholes. Work to date has sought to understand the relationships between drilling performance parameter variation and rock properties. Using the results of these studies, the present research is aimed at developing techniques whereby classical statistical pattern recognition methods are applied to drill data to permit the discrimination of different rock units. A monitoring system incorporating such a capability would greatly enhance the quality and amount of geological information on a per borehole basis while drilling. This data in tum could be used economically and directly towards explosive loading, geological exploration and reserve estimation. Background and PhilosophyThis work is an extension of equipment monitoring studies at the Fording River Mine. At this site over a two-year period, 5180 m of data was acquired on an instrumented Bucyrus-Erie 60R drill during routine production blasthole drilling. Throughout these studies, a 311mm diameter S8M Security tungsten-carbide tricone bit was used. The mine, located in southeast British Columbia, is a large-scale, open pit coal operation. The means of excavation revolves around a drill-blast-muck cycle and employs a standard shovel-truck system of transport. Four main rock types are present: sandstone, siltstone, mudstone and coal, with average compressive strengths ranging from 10 MPa to 150MPa respectively (peck 1989). However, based on the field studies, very few differences in terms of strength and compositional properties were seen between the sandstones and siltstones at the site. Therefore, they are referred to as sandstone/siltstone in all further discussions."

"Northgate Patino Mines produces a copper concentrate assaying 22% Cu. Moisture content of the product averages 12.5% H20 when dewatering with conventional vacuum disk filters. Recent smelter contracts reflect higher energy costs and increased moisutre penalty charges. This situation forced Northgate to investigate possible alternatives such as rotary dryers and pressure filtration. After laboratory testing, it was found that pressure filtration could economically meet the smelter's requirements. Pilot plant testing was then undertaken and confirmed the laboratory test results. Based on these findings, a model I.S.F. 1500 x 28/22 I.R. Lasta filter press was purchased.This paper describes the Copper Rand dewatering flowsheet the operation of the press and the economics of the process.IntroductionNorthgate Patino Inc. operates 2 und erground copper mines and a 3300 ton per day concentrator located in Chibougamau, Quebec, some 425 miles north of Montreal and 300 miles northeast of Noranda, Quebec.Copper concentrate is produced at a rate of 250 tons per day and trucked to a C.N. siding 10 miles from the mill site and then railed to the Noranda Smelter.Until early 1981, moisture content of the concentrate at 12.5070 was acceptable since smelter penalty charges were relatively low ($0.10 per ton per unit over 10070 moisutre). In January 1981, a new contract was signed in which the penalty was raised to $1.10 per ton per unit over 8070 . This and the increasing truck and rail costs justified the change-over from vacuum to pressure filtration . The Lasta I.S .F. 1500 x 28/22 was then purchased and installed, and operation of the plant started in December 1981."

"The use of hydraulically delivered classified tailings sands to provide ground support in large mining operations is still widespread despite recent developments of alternate backfilling methods and materials. The major disadvantages of the use of hydraulic fill are the costs and risks associated with slurry delivery. The main risk is that of bulkhead failure resulting from sand liquefaction due to insufficient operational control or due to dynamic loading from earthquake or rockburst. That risk may be eliminated by the pouring of a stiff cemented sand plug in the base of each stope prior to continuous fill pouring in that stope. An additional advantage of cemented plugs is that massive bulkheads are not needed. Instead, a temporary (removable and reusable) bulkhead can be used for plug forming.Physical model studies of fill pressures on a temporary bulkhead were carried out in a 3 m radius centrifuge facility. Fill pouring in-flight was carried out in order to model prototype stress paths. The results indicate that the average bulkhead pressure is likely to be less than 10 kPa under normal operating conditions and less than 20 kPa under the poorest anticipated operating conditions which include smooth walls, high slimes content and high water-content slurries. A portable bulkhead consisting of a central core and a surrounding sealing bladder was modelled and found to be effective. The use of different sizes of cores allowed the stress distribution adjacent to these bulkheads to be evaluated."

Coleman suggests a factor of at least 2, and up to 5 for gold ores, be applied to laboratory determined flotation times. This is further illustrated in Table I, taken from Denver equipment. The number of cells in series to achieve the required retention time while minimizing short-circuiting has generated a variety of conclusions (Table 2). Obviously there is less than complete agreement on the subject. Young notes that a clear difference of opinion has emerged and cites as extremes, (i) the publications of Outokumpum showing unimpaired recovery for its largest machines (38 m3) compared to equivalent retention times for numerous smaller machines, and (ii) the experiences of Eastern European countries where the practice is to install banks of 30 unit s or more, operating in series, often with unit retention times of only a fraction of a minute.The empirical factors used by engineers presumably account for other than tested feed conditions, inefficiencies in large continuous machines, inevitable day-to-day circuit disruptions, gradual equipment deterioration and any other safety factor the engineer feels compelled to incorporate. An understanding of RTD concepts and techniques should help the practicing mineral engineer to develop more soundly based factors. "The object of this paper is to outline a computerized net cash flow approach for practical cutoff grade determinations. A cutoff grade carries not only geological but also economic value, in which costs are balanced against revenues. For different situations, cutoff grades are a 'standard of value' that are determined for the purpose of classifying economic or uneconomic mineral reserves in a specified time frame. In a constantly changing technical and economic environment, the decision to develop or maintain a mining operation at its best economic potential, requires an appropriate cutoff grade strategy, a strategy consistent with short- and long-term operational and corporate objectives and one based on realistic marketing and metal prices forecasts. The use of a project evaluation computer program, in combination with specific corporate net cash flow requirements, shows the most promising and flexible team approach for cutoff grade optimization.IntroductionThe recent recession has had a devastating effect on the Canadian mining industry. Exploration and mining R&D expenditures have been critically reduced and now are believed to be below healthy levels. Ore reserves, mine life and cutoff grades are careening in several directions because of low base metal prices, relatively high costs and sensitive precious metal prices.These conditions demand an improved understanding of the terms ""ore"" and ""cutoff grades"" as they are applied to the planning process and day-to-day operations. ""Ore"" or 'ore reserves"" is a dynamic concept, reflecting a cumulative effect of changes in geological, technical and economic conditions in terms of material which can be mined at a potential profit. By contrast, if economics are not the primary consideration, the term ""mineral reserve"" or ""mineral inventory"" should be used to describe the mineral deposit. For different situations, cutoff grade is ""a standard of value"" determined for the purpose of classifying mineral reserves as economic or uneconomic in a specified time frame. The question of mining at average reserve grade or low-grade material during high metal prices is of paramount importance for cutoff grade strategy."

A review of operating practices in zinc electrowinning plants is presented in this paper. Surveys were sent to several zinc electrowinning plants and data provided by some of these plants was compiled in a database. Information about anodes and cathodes, electrolyte composition, stripping methods, cells, electrical systems, and additives was compiled and analyzed. From the data analysis, correlations between operating variables are presented. Recent trends in operational practices are also highlighted.

Poland has a unique copper industry. Copper sulphide concentrates are smelted in six shaft furnaces to produce matte and in a flash furnace directly to blister copper. Anodic slimes from electrorefining are treated by a modern technology to recover the precious metals. INTRODUCTION Poland's copper industry began in 1950 when the old and relatively small mines Lena and Konrad, located in Lower Silesia, were drained and recommenced production. In 1957 the industry entered a period of rapid development with the discovery of a rich ore body in the vicinity of Lubin and Polkowice which was the basis for the establishment, in 1961, of the Copper Mining and Smelting Combine (KGHM). In 1991 the Combine was restructured into a state-owned, joint-stock company under the new name of KGHM ?Polska Miedz? (KGHM ?Polish Copper?). It consists of three mines, three smelting and refining plants, and one rolling mill, and produces about 4% of the world?s copper and about 7% of the world?s silver.

"Throughout the history of mining at the Dome, gold has been found in a number of different rock types and in association with a number of different structural settings. Diamond drilling plays an important role in the evaluation of the stratigraphic and structural features which control ore deposition. The main function of diamond drilling is to locate favourable areas of mineralization.To date, over 20,000 diamond drill holes have been drilled from combined surface and underground programs. Needless to say, a great many significant intersections, carrying a wide range of gold values, have resulted from the total of over 756 miles of drill cores which these programs have produced.However, the term ""significant"" takes on new meaning in light of the experience of diamond drilling in a number of ore-type situations at the Dome Mine. Drilling through individual ore veins, such as the Fuchsite Vein or the Quartz-Tourmaline Vein, often intersect the vein structure; however, assays from the veins frequently fail to yield any ore grades. "For recycling LD slag into the steel making process, the phosphorous containing calcium silcate phases have to be removed from iron oxide phases. One possible technical solution could be magnetic separation in a wide range of susceptibilities from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic. To check the feasibility of magnetic separation the distribution of the magnetic susceptibility in size classes as well as the liberation of the phosphorous containing phase were evaluated by a new method combining two dimensional physical property analysis with QEMSCAN analysis. The particle size classes of energy controlled comminution products were subdivided into fractions of defined magnetic susceptibility using a hand magnet of well known field properties (pick up method). On the one hand the susceptibility classes were wet assayed on the other hand analyzed by QEMSCAN followed by data evaluation using iDiscover 5.3.1(FEI), which was adapted to the data structure of two physical properties (size and magnetic mass susceptibility). The results allow the comparison of mass based (3D) cumulative distribution of grades from the wet assays with the area based (2D) distribution from QEMSCAN analysis, in order to control a systematic (size dependent) stereological error for this special type of material. As the physical separation property forms a crucial parameter the results from the liberation analysis by QEMSCAN can be interpreted more profound with respect to an expectable separation result. Once the various mineral compositions of the particles are assigned to the physical properties the Henry Reinhardt chart serves to predict the best possible separation result and thus the feasibility of a separation technique.INTRODUCTIONThe two Austrian steel plants operated by voestalpine AG produce about 650,000 t (voestalpine 2014) of LD slag in the course of steel production from pig iron according to the basic oxygen process blowing oxygen in the converter by an oxygen lance. The process is also known as the Linz Donawitz (LD) steelmaking process. By the addition of lime (CaO), carbon, phosphorus, silica, manganese and sulfur, which are present in the molten pig iron, shall be oxidized and bound in the slag either as oxide or silicate phases, or leave the slag in the gaseous phase (CO). The average chemical composition of the investigated LD slag is given in table 1."

"The zone of economic interest at H.J. Joel Gold Mine is the VS5/Beatrix Composite Reef, a quartz-pebble conglomerate of Archean age. The reef occurs at the base of the Eldorado Formation, Central Rand Group, of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. At least three stratigraphically distinct conglomerates form this economic zone. In order of deposition these are the Footwall, Beatrix, and the VS5/Beatrix reefs. The Footwall and Beatrix reefs are equated with the Aandenk Formation with transport directions toward the northwest, whereas the VS5lBeatrix Reef is of Eldorado age, with transport directions toward the south. The change in the drainage direction was caused by a major basin-wide tectonic event that occurred prior to the deposition of the Eldorado Formation. The Beatrix Reef was formed in a proximal, braided, fluvial environment by a process of aggrading gravel bars between channelways. The VS5/Beatrix Reef was formed by the desegregation of pre-existing Beatrix Reef with the introduction of new material containing much shale detritus and is seen to have been deposited in a more -distal, braided, fluvial environment, similar to the Beatrix Reef.The average gold concentrations are different for each conglomerate; the Beatrix at 32.1 ppm Au, the Footwall at 24.4 ppm Au, and the VS5/Beatrix at only 12.4 ppm Au. A sedimentary gold concentrating process related to higher energy braid channels was primarily responsible for these high gold grades. Not only the basal unconformity surface, but also, internal degredation surfaces, were prime sites for concentration. An understanding of the spatial distribution of these differing conglomerates and their braid channels forming the economic reef zone is necessary in predicting ore grades for future mining."
