Traditional approach to improvement is driven by good ideas from good people, but whilst the business case may sound good, when the project is complete, we often have not delivered on expectations.  Why not? The best way to successfully predict the outcomes of an improvement effort in a complex process is through using statistical modelling, which considers the impact of uncertainty within interacting processes.  Applying Theory of Constraints in a model helps leaders to quickly determine: Where the constraining process(es) is/are Where improvements will add the most value How much improvement should be targeted - before the next constraint takes over The confidence level of achieving a given target, which gives us a clear pathway to improvement. This paper presents an analysis of statistical modelling applications at Vale’s Manitoba Operations to achieve the 2025 targets. Using statistical modelling of the Business Structure, the team identified a series of process improvements through a Theory of Constraints Analysis. Value Stream Maps (VSMs) were used to define the required data, apply statistical modelling, and conduct training sessions enabling the Manitoba team to identify the constraining influences. "The Granisle and Bell Copper mines were officially put into production in 1966 and 1972, respectively. The Granisle Mine was purchased in late 1979by Noranda and the two operations were amalgamated as one division. Both mines were closed in 1982after sustaining heavy financial losses during a period of low copper prices beginning in 1981.This paper describes the resumption of operations at the Bell Mine in 1985 after its shutdown period of three years and the dramatic and sustained improvements in productivity and efficiency realized as a result of a commitment by employees and management to the application of Participative Management and Employee Involvement principles. After a general description of the effects of such a philosophy on the operation as a whole, and a comparison to the operation's last full year as a producer, it deals with the practice of this philosophy in the maintenance department at the Bell Mine and the superb results realized.IntroductionThe Bell Copper deposit was discovered in 1963 and came onstream as a 10000 ton s per day open pit mine in the fall of 1972. Identified reserves at that time were 46 million tons of ore containing 0.50% copper. The mine shared facilities of the townsite of Granisle with the nearby Zapata-Granby mine which had established the community six years earlier.Because of easy grinding ore and improvements to milling circuits, Bell's throughput rate was increased to 17 000 tons per day by the late 1970s. In the open pit, improvements resulted in mining of additional reserves with higher stripping ratios. At startup, a half ton o f waste was mined for every ton of ore processed.By the end of 1982, with 48.2 million tons already mined, the Bell Mine had identified additional mineable reserves of 39.4 million tons containing 0.52% Cu.In November 1979 the Granisle Mine was purchased from Zapata-Granby. The two mines, with a total of 700 employees, were operated under common management as the Babine Division until 1982 when low copper price s forced the closure of both for an indefinite period.The outlook for copper prices remained bleak and only 50 people were retained on the payroll to maintain the two plants, most of them working on a part-time schedule.The population of the Village of Granisle dwindled from over 1500 inhabitants to under 500, as people moved away to seek other employment.Prior to the shutdown, the Bell Mine employed 370 people and pit extraction averaged nearly 50000 tons per day of which 16000 tons was mill feed, and the remainder waste. Total cost to produce a pound of copper was C$1.36 in 1982."

"At the Falconbridge Limited, Canadian Nickel Division, Sudbury Operations, we investigated the ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs model NN3-F which is a Swedish product with foam-filled sealing rings (the Hellberg Standard Volume Hearing Protector). It is used extensively at Falconbridge mines in Sudbury.The research which was carried out in the four Falconbridge mines was conducted under three different headings: manufacturer's attenuation data (psychophysical method), clamping force and head size (bizygomatic diameter), and attenuation tests (physical methods) under working conditions.Manufacturers of hearing protectors claim their products offer noise reductions of 23 decibels (NRR) or more, but they fail to point out that this reduction is obtainable only under ideal conditions. The reality of attenuation under working conditions, as several studies have found, is quite different.Methods for using short measurements to determine the noise exposure index, and for controlling muff-wearing habits, were developed at the Elliot Lake Laboratory. Measurements taken at Falconbridge on ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs revealed that they have a practical attenuation of some IO to 13 decibels. It is important to note here that measurements also revealed that clamping force (thus attenuation) was in an inverse relationship with ear muff comfort. Measuring attenuation using noise dosimeters was a difficult job. Not a single surveyor would accept these measurements (physical method) for absolute accuracy. Apart from that, it was impossible to measure, in one shift, more than two work stations. Because of this, we sought a solution: measuring head size and clamping force in relation to actual attenuations.A detailed analysis of the relationship between attenuation and head size/clamping force was done at four mines. Standard deviation ellipses (standard error ellipses) for head size versus clamping force are in close agreement with measurements that were carried out. In order to measure clamping force an apparatus was constructed and a method for measuring suspension system durability is described in Appendices Band C of this report. At the same time we sought to reduce deterioration of ear muffs in mines as well as to put in place a system whereby attenuation can be controlled and improved. The clamping force apparatus can be operated automatically. The proposed control system is quick, simple and efficient . This system is equally applicable in small and large mining operations, and it can be totally automated and the data computerized for audit of the results. This control system is a new step in controlling ear muff attenuation in working environments.From these measurements of NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs it can be concluded that ear muffs are not the total solution to protect the worker from noise.As the results were evaluated folio wing measurement, Falconbridge switched from the NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs to approximately 90% Mark V ""NO NOISE"" muffs and 10% Mark V MSA muffs. These new muffs showed much better head size versus clamping force relationship and can be expected to produce 14 dBA or better attenuation of noise. ABSTRACT: The development and evolution of the gravity recoverable gold (GrG) test procedure at McGill university is reviewed in this paper. Since the late 1980s, the research group led by the late Professor André Robert Laplante at McGill university has undertaken fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson concentrator to develop a sustainable method of estimating GrG. Historically, a concept of “free gold” was used, and it was de?ned as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, the practical use of amalgamation has declined. around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill university. as a result of more than 10 years of improvement and optimization, this technique has become a standard method of evaluating GrG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. By 2006, about 200 GrG tests were carried out at McGill universityon ores from all over the world. recently, a modi?ed version of the GrG test (a simpli?ed test) was developed to provide a quick and rough estimate of the GrG in a sample; this simpli?ed test has theadvantage of reduced mass, processing time and cost. to recognize and honour the contributions madeby the late Professor Laplante towards the establishment of a standard test procedure for assessing gravity recovery potential, the authors propose that the GrG test be named after Laplante.

Introduction The Author As the pail of smoke and wartime destruction gradually rises from the surface of the earth, from all countries, statesmen assemble to discuss and prepare pacts and treaties which are designed to, once more, bring people of all nations to understand each other and live in harmony. Scientists and engineers throughout the world are also undergoing a drastic reconversion in their ideas and objectives. No longer do they think only in terms of destruction and twist their brains to develop more devastating weapons or to surpass production records of war machinery. They have turned their eyes and ambitions to more pleasant tasks and are taking stock of wartime developments in materials, fabricating procedures, and equipment, many of which had been carefully shrouded with a veil of secrecy, and are applying their new knowledge to the fabrication or improvement of the tools of peace. The next few years will see the gradual elimination of scores of substitutes and makeshifts, expedients which the constantly changing law of supply and demand' under wartime stress necessitated. The universal search for satisfactory substitutes, however, has resulted in a general awakening of plant engineers to the possibilities of materials with which they were relatively inexperienced, with the result that, in many instances, what was considered a substitution at the outset turned out to be more satisfactory than the original material, and, in reality, can be considered a worthwhile development. Not only have materials been explored, but existing fabricating processes have been reviewed, and others, built around the properties and characteristics of new materials, created.

"Synthetic lubricants have for many years documented extended service life and provided superior performance in temperature extremes. Increasing interest in synthetics' ability to reduce energy costs has resulted in laboratory and industry application evaluations. These tests have documented savings in functions such as worm gear drives, spur gears and in compressors. Energy savings data are presented as well as payback calculations as low as thirty days.The National Research Council of Canada has estimated that the Canadian economy loses over five billion dollars per year in friction and wear. Figures quoted were for 1986 during which it was estimated that nine hundred and forty million dollars were lost in the mining industry alone"" It has been further estimated that about 115 million dollars can be immediately recovered through improved tribology practices (Table I).The purpose of this paper is to present results and savings opportunities through the use of synthetic lubricants in various but common applications. Uranium can be recovered from lower grade uranium ores (<800 mg/kg U3O8), leach residues, and waste dumps cost-effectively via resin-in-pulp (RIP). Using this technology, no solid/liquid separation or washing of the leach residues are required. Furthermore, the uranium recovery can be higher than with conventional methods. RIP technologies have, however, been perceived negatively due to concerns around potential resin fouling and losses. This paper highlights the advancements made in RIP and discusses a number of potential applications where the technology could deliver economic and consequential environmental benefits by reducing the uranium levels in the waste.

"Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FMI) commissioned the expansion of the Morenci Metcalf concentrator in 2014. The concentrator included many design and equipment innovations, including the first-of-its-kind Metso Hydraulic Roll Crusher (HRC), variable speed ball mills and variable speed crushers. In addition to the innovative design, FMI commissioned the Metso APC team to design a realistic process simulator and the plant APC. The process simulator was utilized to train operators before commissioning, which led to a smoother plant start up. The plant APC utilized the concept of dynamic constraint control, which controls the feed to the primary ball mills by “pulling” the tons from crushed rock storage bins, which then automatically are filled by the upstream HRC and secondary crushing circuits. The primary ball-mill control also adjusts the water addition to the cyclone clusters to avoid overload and achieve sufficient grind size. The constraints include in-circuit constraints for feeder capacity, screen-deck capacity, ball mill power, cyclone mass flow, pump capacity and pump motor capacity. The APC system was implemented shortly after the start of commissioning and immediately demonstrated increased throughput and an ability to highlight and quantify process constraints and bottlenecks. The following paper outlines the control strategy, discusses system implementation, results and challenges.INTRODUCTION The FMI Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci Arizona on the site of the old original Concentrator. The new Metcalf concentrator started operation in May of 2014. This plant was designed for an average of 63,500 tpd (70,000 stpd), increasing the total Morenci concentrator complex production to a nominal 113,400 tpd (125,000 stpd). The process flow diagram is shown below in Figure 1.The process consists of primary crushing feeding a coarse ore stockpile followed by secondary crushing operating in closed circuit with vibrating screen decks. The screen undersize feeds the first of its kind Metso hydraulic roll crusher (HRC) operating in a closed circuit with vibrating screens. The primary crusher is a Metso 60x110 gyratory crusher. Secondary crushers are Metso MP1250 Crushers with variable speed drives. Secondary crusher discharge is recycled to the dry screen feed bin and screened with oversize returning to secondary crushing and undersize feeding the Metso HRC3000. The product from the 3.0 meter X 2.0 meter roll crusher is wet screened with the undersize feeding the grinding circuit, which is comprised of two each 24-foot diameter by 40- foot-long variable speed ball mills running in parallel with each in closed circuit with a cyclone bank of 12 cyclones. The wet screen oversize is recycled to the HRC feed bin."

Columnar jointed basalt is a fractured rock, with a lot of small spacing structural planes and poor integrity of the rock mass. On the basis of the comprehensive study of the columnar shape of Columnar joints, rugosity of the fracture surface and the chemical composition of basalt, columnar joints of Bai hetan dam area were formed as a result of the cooling and shrinkage effect of magma. Columnar joints basalt are mainly chlorite, kaolinite, epidote, tremolite chemical reactions and the content of columnar joints are mainly chlorite by slice identification and chemical analysis. Columnar joints basalt showed high uniaxial tension test, low coefficient of friction and high cohesion by indoor physical and mechanical test. Columnar joints rock mass showed high strength and large deformation by field shear test and deformation test. Columnar joints basalt can be used directly as a foundation of dam as long as we follow the rules and reduce disturbance strictly.

Highwall Mining has been recently introduced in India. The first Continuous Highwall Mining extraction in India started operating at Ramagundem Opencast Project-II (OC-II) of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (SCCL) in December 2010. A new hybrid empirical and numerical modelling approach has been devised to design web pillars for the initial Highwall Mining sites in India, considering the complex geology, such as existence of thick seams and multiple seams in close proximity. This paper gives the scientific elucidation of a comprehensive design methodology adopted for the above mentioned Indian Highwall Mining sites. The design technology includes web pillar design for multiple seams using hybrid empirical and numerical methods, slope stability assessment, ground movement monitoring, and recommendations for conducting blasting operations in the vicinity of Highwall Mining extractions.

Cameco's Cigar Lake Operation (CLO) started commercial uranium ore production in 2015. Initial mining was focused in areas of the ore body with relatively low concentrations of elements of concern (EOCs). As mining progressed into areas of the ore body that were richer in EOCs, some statistically significant behavior of certain analytes was noted in the water treatment circuits. It was ultimately found that the CLO ore body natively hosts numerous alkyl arsine compounds in addition to inorganic arsenide minerals. The alkyl arsines were found to be recalcitrant to typical adsorption on ferrihydrite, with the degree of recalcitrance associated with the degree of alkylation. A number of changes to the process circuits and water balance were performed and planned in order to inhibit the transport of alkyl arsines from the ore stream into the process water stream, and to optimize the overall site water usage. In some instances, the interactions of equipment in conjoined circuits of the process had controlling effects on the behavior of the overall circuit. Work continues to iterate upon the capital design features in order to further tighten the water balance, and to optimize water usage and operating costs.

As the usage of BIM increased in the construction industry, some construction owners started exploring the use of BIM for maintaining their facilities. Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBIE), a spreadsheet data format suggested in 2007 to manipulate building information, is considered as one of the solutions that would facilitate the process of transferring information from BIM to applications for facilities management. Several BIM and Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) applications offer functions to export or import the COBIE data. To facilitate the process of generating the COBIE data out of Building Information Model, some add-in applications, such as COBIE Toolkit for Revit, also were developed. However, most of these applications handle a limited amount of COBIE data. Professionals using these add-in applications therefore sometimes end up spending a significant amount of time to add additional data manually to the COBIE data file. To automatically get a data-rich COBIE file, we developed a prototype application that extracts information from Revit, which is one of the BIM authoring tools, stores them in an external database, and then produces the COBIE file using information stored in the database. We applied our application to a pilot project and produced 8 COBIE worksheets automatically, which demonstrated a significant amount of time saving. This paper presents how our prototype application produces 8 COBIE data sets automatically. It also addresses our attempt to handle more COBIE data sets.

"The results being presented in this paper are those obtained during 1996 on a drilling automation project at Stobie mine. This project has successfully demonstrated that the remote operation of multiple drills (by a single driller) from surface using Tamrock Data Solo 1000 Sixty drillrigs is technically feasible and can potentially bring significant rewards in terms of productivity and work environment improvements, as well as labour and maintenance savings. BackgroundThe ObjectiveThis paper is an update of a previous report on remote drilling research at Stobie mine. Enabled by the communications system installed at the mine, the ability to remotely control underground equipment from surface has been demonstrated (Poole et al., 1996). This paper discusses the needs and process required to carry this concept to consolidate the operation of multiple machines under a single operator.The TeamThe team assembled to develop and implement the automation and the communi-cations extensions needed to allow the multiple machines’ operation from the surface by one operator included the following:INCO Mines Research supplied the project management and original project initiative. The primary purpose was to prove the advantages of savings associated with the driller not being required to travel to the underground drill location coupled with the savings associated with one-man, multiple-machine techniques.Tamrock EJC supplied the Data Solo 1000 Sixty drills and the Tamrock specific machine-based custom software. The drills were produced in Finland with no provision for remote operation of the drill from other than the umbilical attached local console.Automated Mining Systems supplied the modifications to the drill communications equipment to allow the machine communications to become broadband compatible. As well, Automated Mining Systems also supplied the hardware necessary to be able to remotely control the portable video camera, as well as the data logging equipment.Stobie Mine personnel were made available to test the function and then integrate the concept of remote control drilling into the Stobie operations."

This paper is based on the accident prevention pro-gram carried out in the coal mines of Alberta. It defines the role of the Alberta Mines Branch and of The Work-men&apos;s Compensation Board, and relates how a safety pro-gram was initiated. The formation of the Alberta Class 1 Mining Safety Council is also described. The responsibilities of both management and the individual worker are then outlined, and the main features of a successful accident prevention program are delineated. T HE purpose of this paper is not to repeat generalities and platitudes about industrial safety, but rather to relate the experience of Alberta coal mines during the past number of years in their efforts to keep accidents to a minimum. It has been learned from experience that many basic principles are as sound today as they were 20 years ago. How-ever the complexities of modern mining methods and the modern man or miner have created problems that did not exist then.

The mineralogy of any ore body is a key factor in defining ore zones and predicting minerals/metals behaviour during processing. The determination of forms of gold, defined as the different chemical states in which gold is encountered in ore deposits, is critical. The most commonly known form is that of gold minerals and alloys, while other forms of gold have been collectively described in the literature as submicroscopic gold (i.e., less than 1 µm in diameter). Gold mining operations generally deal with very low-grade ores, in the order of a few g/t, in which gold displays complex mineralogy. These difficulties complicate the mineralogical studies and pose challenges for processing and recovering the gold. A comprehensive understanding of the chemical forms of gold is necessary to define gold mineralization and optimize gold metallurgy. SGS Canada Inc. has been using QEMSCANTM and a Tescan automated SEM that are automated mineralogical techniques that provide vast amounts of data for microscopic Au. The data in conjunction with other physical and chemical methods provide a comprehensive delineation of the ore composition and behaviour.

"The permeability and specific storage of rocks and sedimentary layers deep underground are critical parameters for issues related to the buried evaluation of natural gas and oil, CO2 aquifer storage, various kind of waste storage and so on.The Shirahama sandstone of the Wakayama prefecture, Kii peninsular in central Japan, consists mainly of quartz grains with no cracks and rock fragments that are aggregations of various kind of minerals. The quartz grains have an average size of about 150 micron. The pre-existing pore sizes were distributed dominantly at approximately 1 micron, and the total porosity was about 13%.During the hydrostatic compression test, we measured permeability of Shirahama sandstone by Transient Pulse test for three mutually perpendicular directions. Permeability of Shirahama sandstone remained fairly constant while increasing the effective confining pressure. Permeability anisotropy was observed slightly in the normal and two parallel directions to the bedding planes.We used micro focus X-ray CT with high resolution of 10 micron to visualize and measure the voids space information in Shirahama sandstone. Three-dimensional data were obtained in the intact and stressed sandstone simultaneously. Pore structures and grain boundaries were clearly distinguished. Pore closure and grain movement were clearly observed with increasing confining pressure. Micro focus X-ray CT is an effective tool to visualize and measure the geometrical information in rocks.Three-dimensional medial axis (3DMA) method was introduced to quantify the flow-relevant geometric properties of the voids structure in Shirahama sandstone using µfocus X-Ray CT data. The number of connecting path between two faces, tortuosity and the shortest path distribution within an arbitrary region of Shirahama sandstone specimen were analyzed. Geometrical information on the number of connecting path shows reasonable correlation between permeability anisotropy and mutually perpendicular directions normal and parallel to bedding planes. In addition, we introduced numerical simulation of fluid flow of pressurized Shirahama sandstone by LBM, to discuss the permeability change caused by pressurization on effective confining pressure. We obtained the detailed distributions of fluid pressure and fluid velocity in relatively narrow voids space more than 10 µm. It was confirmed that pressurization effect on permeability caused by the decrease of the connecting path and the shortest path between arbitrary faces, and then caused a complex condition on fluid pressure and fluid velocity."
