A geostatistical study is made of the drilling results available one stage prior to the present for a tabular deposit. The results show that the blocks required by the mining engineers could have been assessed by the earlier drilling grid with an accuracy significantly better than that obtained by applying conventional methods at the present stage.

Although the last decade has seen the growth of many new licencing and approval requirements for the exploration and mining industries, there remains in each State of Australia and the Northern Territory a predominant "Mining Act" containing provisions for the grant of exploration and mining tenements. What then are the rights and duties of tenement holders either by virtue of a Mining Act or through other approval and licencing mechanisms? What rights and duties does a person acquire when he is granted an exploration licence or a mining lease? In this paper I will attempt to cover these types of questions using in particular examples from New South Wales. I will also refer to a range of other subordinate approvals and licences which today's society requires and the need for ethics and recognition of liabilities.

A number of small copper deposits occur in the Pernatty Lagoon-Mt. Gunson area. Textural and mineralogical differences distinguished the lagoon sulphide deposits, which occur in a water filled basin of permeable bedrock immediately under the lagoon floor, from the largely oxidized deposits which occur in the low hills adjacent to the lagoon deposits.Groundwaters are carrying copper, and to a lesser extent zinc, downstream to the lagoon. Several species of sulphate-reducing bacteria are widespread in the groundwaters and lagoon muds.It is suggested that copper sulphides were first deposited at the same time as, or soon after, the host Proterozoic sediments, and that during the present cycle of erosion the lagoon deposits may have been enriched, or largely formed, by bacterial precipitation of copper sulphides from laterally migrating cupriferous groundwaters.

Reserves of high-grade quartz gravel, lignite, and timber suitable for the production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon on large scale occur within 40 miles of Bluff Harbour. Undeveloped hydroelectric power resources on the Clutha River are located within 50 miles of the most promising quartz gravel deposits while opencastable lignite, potentially suitable for electric power production, occurs in the same locality as the quartz gravels. A preliminary study of production economics indicates that the commercial feasibility of silicon/ferrosilicon production would depend mainly on the cost of electric power, total capital cost of plant, and the market value of the products. The proximity of Bluff Harbour is advantageous for the export of products.

This paper focuses on measures of the economic significance of mineral exploitation and processing activities, such as beneficiation, refining and smelting. Empirical measures are suggested to quantify the relevance of the degree processing within a nation's mineral industry. The most useful, based on the input-output econometric framework, are used to establish the magnitude of links between the mineral industry and its satellite activities and for the appraisal of large, non-marginal projects. The input-output impact analysis is refined to allow for country specific behaviour and synthetic indices for the appraisal of investments in the mineral sector are developed. These indices are further improved with the introduction of shadow prices to incorporate socio-economic issues. They are useful to direct mineral policy decisions and several investments towards the most promising objectives for national goals. Finally traditional methods for the appraisal of small scale, marginal, mineral projects are assessed where local impact and regional development issues are more relevant than national ones.

Radioisotope X-ray and neutron techniques of analysis can be used for the determination of a wide range of elements in minerals. The most important applications of these techniques to the mineral industry are for on-stream analysis of slurries and solids, and for geological assay. The radioisotope X-ray techniques are the more developed ones and two installations for on-stream analysis are in routine use in mineral processing plants in Australia. Neutron techniques are being developed, and should prove valuable for geological assay of large numbers of mineral samples, for borehole logging, and for specific on-stream analysis when the cost of the equipment is warranted.

Recent whole-rock geochemical data from nearly 900 fresh drill core and underground samples taken from seven central Victorian gold deposits confirm the presence of distinct and identifiable primary alteration haloes surrounding the deposits. Ferroan carbonate alteration extends for up to several hundred metres away from turbidite-hosted gold mineralisation outside of contact metamorphic aureoles. A less distinct phyllic alteration zone can be identified using geochemical molar ratios or short wave infrared analysis. It generally overlaps a sulfidic halo characterised by disseminated pyrite and in close proximity to mineralised structures, arsenopyrite. The extent of the sulfidic halo can be traced using low-level analysis of pathfinder elements such as S, Au, As and Sb. Recognition of these alteration features enlarges the target for exploration and provides a tool by which drilling can be directed towards mineralised structures. The geological and geotechnical conditions at the Cadia Hill Open Pit are very complex. This complexity coupled with high mining rates has required significant technical input into the design and optimisations of the pit slopes, accesses, cutbacks and scheduling. A multi-discipline team of NML engineers, geologists and external consultants has been conducting comprehensive geological and geotechnical programs in order to achieve an optimum design of the pit slopes. Extensive data collection, analysis and interpretation has led to the formation of working geotechnical models of large structures, rock masses, and back-analysed slope performance charts. The current Cadia Pit Optimisation Project focuses on the risk-and-return principle for pit design and on the integration of geotechnical, hydrogeological, mining engineering and scheduling. The risk management for pit design has also been incorporated into the short term and long-term operation of the pit mining to ensure safety and production.

This paper is intended to help design engineers, operating staff and plant managers understand the principles of metallurgical gas handling systems design. It also explains operating, safety and energy savings issues that the designer should take into consideration in the design of process off-gas systems for sulfide smelters. Primary smelting reactors, converters, and other off-gas sources impose challenging duty requirements on the various components of the gas handling systems. This paper reviews the design of common system components including the hood for gas capture at the system inlet, gas conditioning, gas cleaning, ductwork, dampers, hot gas fans, and the appropriate use of instrumentation and controls. The engineer must also be aware of how ductwork system effects and heat losses influence system performance. Also, the analysis of a recently-designed gas handling system will be reviewed, which includes high-strength SO2 gas from a smelting reactor, asymmetrically located Peirce-Smith converters, and a gas mixing chamber to mix the gases before they are sent to two acid plants of different sizes.

Modelling of Synergistic Effect of Cyanex 302 and D2EHPA in Zinc Solvent Extraction A comprehensive model is presented to predict the synergistic effect of D2EHPA and Cyanex 302 on co-extraction of zinc and manganese. The experimental results indicated that pH, temperature and the extractants ratio have strong effects on the extraction process. Correlations were proposed to predict the distribution coefficient of zinc and manganese between two phases at different conditions by multiple linear regression. The correlations were simplified by eliminating less important terms by analysis of variance. Optimum conditions (ie pH, temperature, extractants ratio and aqueous to oil phase volumetric ratio) for obtaining maximum separation of zinc from manganese at different zinc concentrations and number of extraction stages were determined. For finding the optimum condition genetic algorithm was used. Comparison the model estimations and the experimental data show that the presented model has good ability to predict the behaviours of zinc extraction system over Cyanex 302 and D2EHPA.

For decades strip mining with discon tinuously operating 'draglines and shovels has been the most economical operation method in the shallow hard coal opencast mines of Aust- ralia, North-America and some other countries. Continuously operating equipment such as bucket chain excavators and bucket wheel excavators in combination with conveyor belt systems, conveyor bridges and stackers had been deve- loped in Germany; during the last 25 years this type of equipment has been further developed in order to allow a high degree of rationaliza= tion as to opencast mines in unconsolidated overburden in Germany, in many European couh- tries, in India and in Victoria. The differing compactness of the layers to be mined, the increasing mining depth, the adverse over- burden to coal ratio and geotechnical con- ditions account for the combined use of con- tinuously and discontinuously operating equip- ment and systems. A technology involving separate unit processes for the generation and use of ferric ions for the oxidation of sulphidic minerals has been developed. The technology utilises a stand-alone automated bioreactor for ferric-ion generation (termed SAAB-FIG) and produces a low pH, ferric ion-rich leach liquor with a high oxidation potential. This leach liquor is then employed, in a separate unit process, to oxidise sulphidic minerals and regenerate ferrous iron that may subsequently be recycled to the bioreactor for the continual generation of ferric ions. The technique was successfully applied for the recovery of copper from chalcocite (Cu2S) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as other ores and concentrates containing copper sulphide minerals. Coarse ore, ground ore and concentrates were treated with acidic solutions containing 8 to 12 (g/L) Fe(III) ions at a variety of temperatures. This process yielded over 50 per cent of the contained copper from both chalcopyrite and chalcocite samples. Maximum reaction rates and copper recoveries were found to be highly dependent upon temperature and pH and leach liquors containing bacterial cells displayed little difference in their leaching efficiency when compared to cell-free leach liquors.

The North Western Sewer tunnel extends over 11.5 km in the North Western suburbs of Melbourne.The $253 million tunnel project provides a critical link in the Melbourne Sewer Network. The existing sewers fail to service the increasing demands of the growing population of the North West regions of Melbourne. This project will protect the environment and improve the standards of service of the existing system. This paper concentrates on Section three of this project, consisting of the final 4 km of the Contract, three access shafts and a cut and cover section of tunnel.Transfield Tunnelling as Head Contractor constructed the tunnel for Melbourne Water Corporation, with Enetech Streamline, formally Streamline Australia, a trading arm of Melbourne Water acting as Superintendent.Excavation of Section three of this project commenced in September 1994 and project completion is scheduled for October 1998. The tunnel passes below the residential suburb of Essendon, through some of the most challenging ground conditions ever attempted to be tunnelled in Australia.

Kinetics of bubble-particle interaction, surface hydrophobicity and interfacial phenomena in sulfide mineral flotation are discussed in this paper. Results of the measurements of a bubble and mineral induction time (IT) and detachment force (DF), vacuum of bubble evolution (VE) and mineral floatability are discussed for pyrite, galena, chalcocite and chalcopyrite. Natural wetting and wetting induced by xanthates with different lengths of alkyl chains are examined. Experiments show the existence of several maxima of hydrophobicity on dependences of pH and electrochemical potential. These maxima are attributed as the reflection of mineral surface heterogeneity due to xanthate adsorption and the presence of cationic and anionic centres with uncompensated positive and negative charges. These charges can be neutralised by both regulation pH and applied potential. The aim of this paper is to evaluate a thickness of the rupturing film and to estimate how long the bubble-mineral interactions are according to the experimental values of IT, in order to develop a procedure for comparing of the results of DF and atomic force measurements in the same dimensionality, and to compare the results of the experimental studies on the wettability of sulfides with those predicted by the models of physics of capillarity.

The disposal of residues from coal preparation and processing will to an increasing extent require investigation and consideration of the environmental problems resulting as a consequence of this. Different authors (Diingelhoff and Plankert, 1983; Hasenpatt, 1985; Szczepanska and Twardowska, 1987) have concentrated primarily on the content and the mobilisation of inorganic contaminants such as chlorides, metals and heavy metals from spoil tips, while no publications have yet been found on the question of a possible emission of organic contaminants (PCB, PAH, HC HC) from processing residues. Here the flotation residues in particular are able to bind larger quantities of organic contaminants by physi-sorptive means because of their large specific surface and, after disposal, to be re-emitt than into the environment. The flotation agents used in coal flotation are mixtures of technical distillation products with a correspondingly fluctuating composition. As Hey, 1986 showed, they may contain, in addition to the main components (n-alkanes, alcohols, surfactants), over 50 individual trace substances. In conjunction with the structural-chemical similarity of the individual components, this complicates the quantitative analysis of individual components considerably. For the analysis of hydrocarbon content of flotation products by means of extraction with organic solvents in accordance with DIN 38408, H18, the difficulty arises, besides the insufficient sensitivity at low concentrations, that geogeonic hydrocarbons are extracted from the coal as. well and the analysis results are thus falsified. These problems were overcome by the application of the 14C radiotracer method where certain components of the flotation agents are marked with radioactive carbon (14C). By measurement of the radioactivity of solid and liquid samples, the concentration of the marked substance can be measured very sensitively and precisely, whereby the accumulative measurement of similar organic substances is ruled out. Thus the reaction path of certain substances in complex reagent mixtures such as flotation agents can be traced excellently and the conceivable environment burden resulting from flotation tailings disposal can be estimated. In this paper, the adsorption behaviour of typical components of coal flotation agents are investigated for different coals and types of gangue material, the reagent content of flotation concentrates and tailings, as well as the mobility of the reagents adsorbed onto solids. The knowledge of adsorption and desorption mechanisms of unpolar hydrocarbons emulsified in water to solids are also of particular interest for the understanding of processes of organic soil contamination and for the further development of washing processes for oil-contaminated soils.

The problems experienced with longwall mining machinery motivate the development of an expert system for fault diagnosis. The techniques of knowledge representation, database, knowledge base and inference engine guide the selection of the expert systems and languages -"Turbo Prolog"- as exemplified in the case study of hydraulic support. The aim is to hasten future development of a fault diagnosis system and the design of a system to locate and determine the causes of failure of longwall machinery. The system would use its stored case history and other information to make fault diagnoses and suggest appropriate remedies. Consequently down-time would be reduced and production and profitability should increase.

In pursuit of optimising the cemented rockfill system fragmentation of the aggregate, while travelling through the surface-to-underground aggregate transport raise, was investigated and a æfines estimationÆ equation was determined. When used with the rockfill strength estimation equation, the fines estimation equation enables an accurate estimation of the compressive strength to be derived theoretically. Optimum fill raise orientation was examined and recommendations are given depending on the varying stope dimensions. If the maximum dimension of the stope is less than 30.5 m (100 ft), a single, centrally located fill raise will suffice. However, as the stope dimensions increase, the number and orientation of the fill raises becomes more complicated and each stope must be examined on an individual basis.
