The sulfurisation-flotation process was unsuccessful when initially applied to the oxidised Pb-Zn ore in Lanping County of Yunnan Province China. A comprehensive mineralogical study indicates that the problem is caused by the soluble salt gypsum in the Lanping oxidised ore, which produces a large amount of Ca2+ cations. The Ca2+ cations react with S2- anions (from sodium sulfide) in preference to Zn2+ and Pb2+ forming calcium sulfide, and make it difficult to form zinc and lead sulfides on the surfaces of the respective oxidised Zn and Pb minerals. In addition, the calcium sulfide formation consumes a large quantity of the available sodium sulfide, further inhibiting the sulfurisation process. The efficiency of the sulfurisation of oxidised Zn and Pb minerals has been improved greatly by the pretreatment removal of gypsum, with the added benefit of the required dosage of sodium sulfide being substantially reduced.

In contrast to the '50s and '60s, the period of the '80s and '90s seems likely to have low growth in demand but much greater levels of technological change. In such a climate there will be pressure on costs, productivity will continue to rise and competitiveness will be closely associated with maintenance of the most effective technology. The penalties for inappropriate investments, whether short sighted or mistakenly based on a particular view of the future, will be greatly enhanced. Accordingly, there will be a need for significantly improved anticipation of technical change and thus for better planning. Study of the funding and direction of the world's R&D effort can provide a useful input to the planning processes within industries and individual firms. Such a study also suggests some insights into the characteristics of those countries which have achieved substantial growth and high standards of living over the past two decades. These characteristics may offer significant reminders for our own development. The particular implications for the Australian minerals industry include the need for direction that is sensitive to changing market requirements and customer practice. This is not simply "more of the same." In particular it appears essential for both basic and applied R&D to provide a sound basis for the purchase and ongoing development of the new technology required to achieve international Competitiveness.

During devolatilisation, physical behaviour of coals was investigated in horizontal electrically heated furnace with an inert gas atmosphere, and gasification rates of four coal chars and coke were measured thermogravimetrically in a carbon dioxide atmosphere at temperatures in the range 1100oC - 1500oC. The volume change of chars was also measured in horizontal electrically heated furnace at various temperatures. Both reactivity and the activation energy for the gasification of coal chars were found to be strongly influenced by pore structure and the carbonisation conditions employed during preparation. CO2 reactivity of chars increases with increasing reaction temperature, and particularly increases more rapidly over 1300¦C. CO2 reactivity of coke is lower than that of non-coking coal chars in the range of 1100¦C to 1500¦C. CO2 reactivity of chars with smaller pore area and bigger pore diameter is less than that of chars with bigger pore area and smaller pore diameter. During gasification, the volume of chars did not change significantly at the lower temperatures of 1100¦C and 1200¦C, but at the high temperatures, 1300¦C to 1500¦C, the volume of chars quickly decreased due to ash softening and melting. The CO2 reactivities of the chars are controlled by the mixed control of chemical reaction and pore diffusion in the temperature range 1100¦C to 1300¦C, and by bulk diffusion in the temperature range 1400¦C to 1500¦C.

A universal grinding circuit model suitable for an arbitrary structure of flowsheet has been suggested. In this model classifiers and mills are described in a most general form. What puts the model in a class by itself is the automatic mass balancing in all streams of the circuit. In order to provide this a special classifier model is adopted. A previously published continuous steady state process model is used as a grinding model. Non-linearity of classifier model leads to a resultant circuit model which is equivalent to a non-linear integral equation. It complicates somewhat calculation algorithm in comparison to that of linear model, but provides a physically meaningful solution.

Mining is the oldest industrial practice on the planet with a history dating back over 3000 years. Since the early iron age ores have been extracted for use in a variety of contexts by humankind, from domestic to military, transport and more recently for complex industrial applications. Mineral exploration and extraction has evolved from the early exploitation of primary metal occurrences in relatively small quantities such as iron, gold, coal and copper, to the bulk mining and extraction of highly complex polymetallic oxides and sulfides today. Since the industrial revolution, mining practice has evolved substantially to support an increasing range and quantity of required metals and to accommodate the increasing scarcity of high-quality sources of these metals. A common response to the increasing scarcity of mineral resources has been to expand production through simple economies of scale, thus diluting fixed costs. This approach, however, is increasingly ineffective in the face of current trends, that include increasingly complex mineralogy, increasing pressure on environmental footprint - energy in particular, and increasing scarcity of capital for the construction of presently popular æmega-minesÆ. This paper examines historical trends and current practice in mineral exploitation in the light of the current global revolution in social, environmental and economic values as the projects move towards a vastly different topology for the industry for continued success in years to come.CITATION:Bamber, A S, 2012. Drilling and blasting at Westside Mine near Wallsend, NSW, has presented a challenge for Orica Explosives, Australia. The colliery produces 600 000 tonnes of steaming coal per year from two seams using surface mining techniques. Tapping into underlying coal will greatly improve the yield, but there are many issues which make this an enormous challenge. Hunter Valley Earthmoving engaged Orica Explosives to supply the explosives products and to provide much of the blasting expertise that is needed on the minesite. Hunter Valley Earthmoving and Orica Explosives have proven to be an outstanding, unified technical team on this project. The success of the team is based on good communication, progressive attitudes, extensive expertise in blast design and most importantly, care and accuracy in implementing the agreed upon designs.

One of the most frequently asked questions at the feasibility study stage of a project is, æhow big can one go?Æ This important question effects costing and efficiency of metallurgical equipment, the real estate required and the operating plant strategy.The presentation covers both engineering and process considerations and explains the limits that exist today and explores future trends.The paper is specific about large slurry application usually found in gold applications; however, it could apply to silver and uranium or other dense media leach duties.Agitator drive sizes are examined as well as process risks associated with large tank agitation. New technology has increased the maximum tank size and designers are now experienced in tank volumes in excess of 5000 m3. Tanks of 6000 m3 have been agitated and 10 000 m3 tanks are within present engineering know-how and scale-up.Fabrication techniques for shaft and impeller designs exceed the existing standards and new specifications will be needed to cover large mixer design. The paper covers certain aspects of mechanical design and proposes alternative standards that are more appropriate. Process considerations such as fluid natural frequency as well as typical superficial velocities for efficient operations are examined. Scale-up techniques based on existing and new technology are also examined to ensure a successful installation.The presentation therefore covers the majority of large mixer design questions that are frequently asked.

Carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite yields a magnesium bicarbonate leachate with a substantial soluble iron concentration. The iron concentration depends upon the leaching conditions (particularly time, temperature and pulp density) but is generally in the range 0.005-0.5 g/litre. If this soluble iron is not removed prior to the precipitation of the magnesium as a hydrated carbonate, then this product will be contaminated by the iron, and will not yield a final product (high-purity magnesia) that meets specifications.The soluble iron content of the magnesium bicarbonate leachate can be reduced to an acceptable level by addition of solid aluminium sulphate either during carbonic acid, leaching of the crude calcine or to the clarified leachate. Chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction revealed that the iron is precipitated as an iron-containing hydrotalcite-type compound, [Mg6(Al,Fe)2(OH)16]CO3.4H2O. The actual composition of the precipitate depends on the amount of aluminium sulphate added and the precipitation technique used. Because precipitation of iron in this manner also results in reduced magnesium recovery from the leachates, It WIll be necessary to develop methods for recovering the magnesium component of the precipitates.

The interaction of flotation collectors with sulphide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulphides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidized to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidized xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulphides is discussed briefly.

The Palmarejo, Guadalupe and La Patria Silver-Gold epithermal vein deposits occur in south-westernChihuahua state, Mexico. The veins are hosted in a volcano-sedimentary sequence that comprises andesitic to basaltic resedimented volcaniclastic rocks, together with less abundant coherent and pyroclastic facies and minor red-beds. The host sequence is part of the Lower Volcanic Series, and formed in a magmatic arc environment during the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Laramide Orogeny. The Lower Volcanic Series is overlain unconformably by an extensive sequence of Miocene rhyolitic ignimbrites, known as the Upper Volcanic Series. At this time, it is uncertain whether epithermal mineralisation was related to andesitic intrusions (85 Ma) and/or Oligocene rhyolitic dykes (25 Ma). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Gentlemen, you heard the good Doctor has commissioned me to make a'summary of the proceedings to date and also to close the said proceedings. It seems that over the years the business of making a summary alternates between'Mr. Pearce and myself, also I,think that w~oever is around onthe day in question 'obtains the task and apparently I drew it this, year. It is hoped you will be patient as previous experience in this capacity'indicates that the best way to proceed is to have a brief summary on each paper and then do a summary of summa~ies. This makes the approacha little cumbersome but it is felt to be fair to each author and it brings'back to the audience some recollections of what transpired at the time and they can make their own decisions, which may not necessarily agree with those of the 'sum'marisor.

The mineral resource that a mining company has access to, represents the majority of the embedded value that exists within the company, as well as the competitive advantage that the company has over its peers. However, the real value is only realised once effective mining plans have been put in place, which optimise the extraction of the resource, and add measurable value to the company. The concept of mineral resource management (MRM) has been developed in South Africa, to ensure this optimisation happens in an integrated and quantifiable manner, such that value is added and risk is reduced, resulting in bottom line improvement for the stakeholders of the business. This paper describes the process of mineral resource management, and draws on successes and failures of various companies, to illustrate how it should be implemented, and what measures should be put in place to ensure its success. This requires a fundamental re-appraisal of the way in which mining companies plan and execute their businesses, and focuses attention on real value adding activities and behaviour through the use of economic value added as an appropriate metric by which to measure real value and risk. Specifically, the paper focuses on these aspects as applied to planning models and processes, exploration activity and risk management, to ensure operational and project success.

This work describes preliminary laboratory testwork to study the relative leaching response to cyanidation and thiourea leaching of an oxidised low grade gold ore. The potential of an alternative lixiviant like thiourea to commercial processing of mine dumps is discussed by specific reference to selected case histories. The Nelson province was chosen as the prime area for rhenium sampling, based on its mineral associations. Sample preparation involved benefication by grinding and flotation. A modification of published procedures for rhenium analysis was developed and the results compared with those obtained for molybdenum on the same samples using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results of the analysis for both metals is discussed and the relationships between rhenium and the molybdenum mineralisation of this region is commented on. A metallogenic province is defined for molybdenum and rhenium and the tectonic setting for this is discussed. Some consideration has been given to rhenium possibilities in Fiordland and the Coromandel Range.

An advanced technique for modelling hydrocyclone separation performance has been developed. This technique is based on the combined modelling of hydrocycloning parameters and ævirtualÆ iron ore feed. The virtual feed modelling was performed using a novel (in-house) software package called æRecognitionÆ, which uses data from optical image analysis to classify the particles in certain size fractions according to total iron content and calculates data for every grade class. These data include the average mineral composition and density of every liberation class in every size fraction. This information about every size fraction, representing the ævirtual feedÆ, was input to the mineral processing modelling package USIM PAC. The hydrocycloning process was then modelled for this virtual feed using the Plitt hydrocyclone model. Empirical calibration coefficients for the hydrocyclone model were calculated using an optimisation procedure in Excel. Pilot-scale hydrocyclone beneficiation experiments were performed on an iron ore blend, using different hydrocyclone pressures and per cent solids in the feed pulp. These experiments were modelled and the modelling results were compared with the experimental results. The new modelling approach enables prediction of the recovery of each mineral in the products, calculation of the total iron grade and recovery, and optimisation of iron ore beneficiation using hydrocyclones.

The capabilities of the three 61R and one 81R Robbins Raiseborers currently in use at Mount Isa are defined. Their applications in the development of ventilation and hoisting shafts, orepasses, escape routes, fill passes etc. are described and possible future uses of these and newer raiseborers at Mount Isa are examined. Problems associated with the use of raiseborers, together with ways of overcoming them are discussed. The impact of raiseborers on the mining operation is assessed in terms of new approaches to design and development, safety, cost and manpower efficiencies.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) ships about 600,000 dry tonnes of copper concentrate per annum to Japan, Germany and Spain, with some spot sales to other countries. Concentrate sales value for 1984 was 335 million US$, representing almost half of PNG exports. Contained metal determination is based on physical and chemical measurements on representative samples. The entire procedure is subject to statistical uncertainties and possible systematic errors; losses as high as several percent of contained copper or gold are common and frequently are regarded as unavoidable. In this context, the function of the chemical laboratory is to identify and eliminate such errors and recommend correct technical procedures for possible inclusion in sales contracts. BCL's marketing management has encouraged this approach and the close buyer versus seller agreement is beneficial for all parties involved. BCL participates in the respective technical committees of the Standards Association of Australia (SAA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Standard methods for sampling and analysis of copper, lead and zinc ores and concentrates are in course of preparation, some being due for publication shortly.

Rock mass classification systems for stable excavation design have been studied. The parameters which are important in such a classification system and those which should be included in a classification system formulated to predict explosive fragmentation behaviour are briefly reviewed and compared. There is significant overlap in the data requirements for excavation design and explosive blast de- sign. Recently there has been a trend to ob- tain some of the data required for excavation design by the use of both field and laboratory seismic investigations. The theory of seismic techniques is summarised and the results of seismic investigations carried out for excava- tion design are reviewed. On this basis it is considered that seismic techniques have the potential to be used for data collection prior to blast design. A programme designed to de- velop such techniques and which includes both field and laboratory experimentation is Presented.

The Mining Act (1992) and the Petroleum Act (1980) provide for the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to take up equity holdings in mining and petroleum projects. The price the Government pays for its share is based on the historical cost of exploration and development on the project to the date of government equity acquisition. The equity level to be acquired is not fixed and ranges up to 30o for mining and up to 22.5s for petroleum at the discretion of the Government of the time.The objective of this paper is to examine the pros and cons of State equity holdings in PNG from the point of view of both the State and the developer. Using an economic model of the PNG mining taxation system an assessment is made of the effective return on investment received by the State from such equity holdings. The results are compared with government revenues from other taxation measures.

The paper discusses the characteristics of Be-zymianny activity during the last 2500 years. Three periods of increased activity have been identified which are the eruptive cycles lasting for 100-400 yrs. The periods of high activity fall on the fol-lowing time intervals: 2400-1700 yrs ago, 1350-1000 yrs ago and from 1955 ixp to the present time. The 1955-1956 catastrophic eruption after a long period of repose (about 900-1000 yrs) opened a new cycle of activity of the volcano which is continuing to-day. Several decades are distinguished in activity which differ in character and intensity of eruptions.
