Operations ill Colorado oil fields in 1934 were not quite so extensive as in 1933, but much better results were obtained and one new oil field was discovered. In all, 26 wells were drilled, of which 9 were oil wells, 1 was a gas well, and 16 were dry holes. New oil production totaled 10,220 bbl. and new gas production totaled 33,714,000 cu. ft. This compares with new oil production in 1933 of 1238 bbl. and new gas production of 14,307,000 cu. ft. Dry holes in 1933 totaled 29 as conlpared with 16 in 1934. Oil was discovered in the Hiawatha gas field, Moffat County, in 1934 in the Mountain Fuel Supply Company's No. 4B Wilson, C. NE. NW. of sec. 23, 12N., 100W. This well was completed in a sand in the Wasatch (Tertiary) at 2304 to 2337 ft., after plugging back from 3797 ft. It made 20 bbl. of oil initially. No. 4B Wilson is the first well in the Rocky Mountain region to discover oil in commercial amounts in rocks younger than Cretaceous, and while it is not expected that Hiawatha will develop into an oil field of important proportions, eventually it may produce a considerable amount of oil as the gas pressure declines. Brazil is one of the most outstanding examples of economic development of our time. Its amazing growth record is substantiated by a GNP which has increased at an average rate of 92% for the period 1968-1970 and estimates for 1971 range from 11.7-12.5%. Hence, this growth, coupled with a more relaxed attitude of the Brazilian government towards foreign participation in business opportunities and the remittance of profits out of the country, has caused many exploration companies to reevaluate the potential of Brazil. Despite recent press notices and publicity, Brazil is still not a mining country in the tradition of Canada or Australia. It is still basically an agriculture and manufacturing country.

The relationships between collector and mineral, activator and mineral, and activator, collector and mineral will be considered herein. We propose to criticize current theories of flotation but we will not repeat the many pertinent arguments presented by Wark and Cox28 in 1937 in which the "chemical" or more strictly the "solubility" theory proposed by Taggart and co-workers22 is shown to be untenable. Recently Taggart, Arbiter and Kellogg24 have studied the long-chain aliphatic amines as collectors and have attempted to resuscitate the solubility theory for these particular collectors. Dean and Ambrose3 have felt that "we stumble over words" when we distinguish different mechanisms of adsorption. Our view is that nothing is more stultifying to the development of a science than attempts to force widely different phenomena into one classification. This oversimplification leads immediately to difficulties in the interpretation of results. Experimental Procedure The response of minerals to activator and collector was determined by "captive-bubble" tests. The methods of preparation of specimens26 and of testingin have been previously described. Results from captive-bubble tests were confirmed by flotation tests in glass-stoppered cylinders.26 The full lines shown in the figures relating solution composition to contact (flotation) distinguish solutions in which contact (flotation) is possible from those in which it is not. The curve is derived by successive approximation and the accuracy is ±o.2 pH units and ±5 mg. per liter of collector or depressant. Solution compositions for which it was shown experimentally that contact or flotation is possible are marked by a circle, those for which it is not possible by a cross and those for which it is doubtful by a cross within a circle. It is assumed that at all other solution compositions within (without) the curve, contact or flotation is possible (not possible). After testing in the collector solution, the mineral was removed, washed, and tested by the captive-bubble method in water, or floated in a cylinder with frother only. In this way the composition of solutions in which a mineral was conditioned but in which properties of the collector solution prevented contact or flotation can be defined. The composition of solutions in which conditioning was possible lie between the full and broken curve, the experimental results being indicated on the figures by a square. The curves show the limits of composition of solution in which flotation in a cell would be possible. Many factors other than those considered in these tests determine recovery or grade of a given mineral in practice.

The real and apparent dependence of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, Ds, of gold on crystallo-graphic orientation has been investigated by isolated scratch smoothing and grain boundary grooving experiments. No systematic variation of Ds with orientation was found along the [100] zone. In view of the experimental scatter in these results, however, only aniso-tropy ratios, p, greater than -1.3 would be detectable. Anomalously low values of Ds were found on the [0ll] and [110] zones when the diffusion direction lies along (the scratch or grain boundary groove is perpendicular to) these zones. By comparing these results with a previous y plot study of gold, it is hypothesized that this is not an intrinsic diffusivity effect, but rather it results from a decreased driving force for mass transfer at orientations where the y-plot curvature is negative and appreciable in magnitude relative to y. The characteristics of this type of anisotropy do not appear sEVERAL investigations1-7 have dealt with the anisotropy of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, Ds, of metals as measured by the decay of single or multiple to be in agreement with the hypothesis of fast diffusion along ledges in the surface structure. In certain cases the Fourier method of determining Ds, described in Paper I of this series9 was compared with the second moment analysis in order to determine whether or not the method of analysis affects the anisotropy ratio. While the type of analysis does influence the magnitude of the anisotropy ratio, this effect is not associated with the shape of the profile, but rather is connected with the iterative volume diffusion correction used in conjunction with the second moment analysis. It is further demonstrated that the volume diffusion correction can be too large by either method when the y-plot curvature effect is large. Certain orientations exhibit an unusual temperature dependence of Ds ; this is discussed in terms of the y-plot curvature effect and/or the influence of impurities on Ds . scratches in the surface. Depending on the system investigated, both large1"3'6'7 and small4'5 anisotropies in Ds have been found. Although adsorbed impurities undoubtedly play an important role in determining the magnitude of the anisotropy,8 there are other factors that can give rise to an apparent anisotropy in Ds, thus obscuring the true nature of an intrinsic anisotropy in

THE Midvale mill of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company is situated on a flat site whose elevation is 50 ft above that of the Jordan River. Tailings are impounded in the area between the river and the flat upon which the mill and railroad switchyard are located. The water supply is pumped from the Galena canal which leads from the river at a point some ten miles to the south. The mill has a present capacity of approximately 1700 tons daily. It started out originally in 1926 as a 750 ton three-unit plant. The tonnage was gradually increased to 1200 tons by 1934, and in late 1935 a fourth unit was added. The accompanying flowsheet shows the principal equipment and how it is utilized. The ore is principally sulphide with varying degrees of oxidation, with individual lots ranging widely in both precious and base metal content. The engineering and metallurgical assessment of the McLaughlin Project ore body concluded that an open-pit mine and cyanide leach mill process would be feasible, producing both waste rock and residual mill tailings. As a part of the planning and permitting process, site selection studies were conducted for the tailings and waste rock disposal. The site selection process began with a regional identification of potential disposal sites and proceeded through 1) regional screening, 2) elimination of sites with obvious fatal flaws, 3) qualitative ranking of site evaluation criteria, 4) quantitative ranking of sites, 5) field investigation, 6) evaluations of field data, and 7) selection of preferred sites. Based on this approach of site rankings and field evaluations, tailings and waste rock disposal sites were selected and recommended for the preliminary design phase of the permitting and project development process. The site selection study provided the documentation necessary to justify the use of these sites for waste disposal and enabled Homestake Mining Co. to anticipate and integrate environmental concerns with agency requirements into the planning process.

In planning and designing of underground excavations and construction, it is of considerable importance that the stresses and displacements in the rock mass subjected to arbitrary sequences of unloading and loading be within allowable limits. For determination of the stress and displacement fields, the usual approach is to treat the rock as an elastic material and to apply the principles of the theory of elasticity. However, analytic solutions are available only for a limited class of problems of simple geometry and idealized material properties. Nonhomogeneity and anisotropy of material coupled with complex geometrical configuration and initial stress fields that are almost always preexistent in rock masses at great depths, render the problem intractable by analytical methods. Approximate solution techniques using numerical procedures have, therefore, to be resorted to. The finite element method as applied to plane stress analysis was introduced by Clough.1 It has developed into a powerful tool for the analysis of various field problems in structural and continuum mechanics. The method is well documented in the literature2-6 and, therefore, its historical development will not be discussed here. Wilson's analysis of the plane stress/strain problem has found extensive use in the area of soil and rock mechanics including stresses around underground openings; stresses and displacements in dams, foundations, etc.7-11 In his analysis of the axisymmetric solid,3 Wilson proposed a procedure to allow for certain cases of nonlinear material properties. [Secretary's Note.—The following official tables, prepared by the government of the State of Nuevo Leon, and presented to the Institute at the fifth seseion of its Mexican meeting, held at Monterrey, November 26, 1901, present in compact form a general summary of the mineral and metallurgical industry of the State for the preceding calendar year, together with a statement of the railway-shipments of ores from January 1 to October 31, 1901, which, in the absence of direct official mining and metallurgical statistics (not yet available for that year), clearly indicates an increased activity and productiveness of these industries. In other words, the mines are reported to have yielded in 1900 a total product of 83,960,169 kilos of ore; whereas, the railway is reported to have carried, in 10 months of 1901, a total of 108,318,647 kilos of ore. At this rate, the railway-shipments for 1901 mould amount to nearly 130,000,000 kilos. It is, of course, possible that the railwaystatistics include other freight than ores, or that they include duplications, such as would be involved in the record, first of certain ores transported, and afterwards of the " base bullion " produced therefrom. An accurate comparison is therefore impossible ; yet, after making all reasonable allowances for such items as have been named, it seems safe to infer that the mining and metallurgical industry of this State accomplished in 1901 a substantial progress.]

SEVERAL years ago, I estimated the total stock of gold in the world to be about a thousand million ounces, of which rather over one-third was available for monetary uses. Robert H. Ridgway has estimated the world's production from 1493 to 1927 as slightly over this amount. Of this total, 1.5 per cent was produced between 1493 and 1850 (before the Californian and Australian goldfields began to flood the world with gold), 331/2 per cent from 1851 to 1900, and 511/2 per cent from 1900 to 1927. Allowing for loss by attrition and permanent consumption in the arts, and for loss of buried treas¬ure, my first-mentioned estimate is perhaps not far from the truth; but my estimate of the monetary stock was certainly too low. Of the total production stated by Rid-way. 28 per cent came from North America. 26.9 per cent from Africa, 1.6.8 per cent from Australasia, 12.4 per cent from South America, and 11.2 per cent from Asia. Excepting that from the African conglomerate beds, the ultimate origin of which is still the subject of controversy, by far the greater part of the total production was derived from alluvials. Weighing all contingencies, it is improbable that any such production as has been made during the last forty years will be repeated in any similar period, if the present price level is maintained. The gold standard today seems firmly established except for temporary digressions. Nevertheless, no well-informed mining engineer will venture to assert the probability that the material for its maintenance throughout future generations can be furnished.

The electrical conductance of molten FeS was studied as a function of temperature and composition. It was found that stoi-chiometric FeS (36.5 pct S) shows a minimum specific conductance of 400 ohm-1 cm-1. For the Fe-rich melts the conductivity increases with increasing amount of iron to about 4850 ohm-1' cm-I at 26 pct sulfur. For the sulfur-rich melts the conductivity increases with increasing amount of sulfur until it reaches a maximum of 1300 ohm1 cm-1 for 37.4 pct S and decreases to 800 ohm-1 cm-1 for 38.3 pct sulfur. It is concluded that molten stoichiometric FeS is an intrinsic semiconductor in which the forbidden gap in the electron energy level diagram is quite narrow. Excess sulfur acts as an acceptor impurity in providing a component of positive hole conduction, while excess iron acts as a donor impurity to increase the n-type conduction. K. Bornemann and G. von Ftauschenplatl used a four-terminal, direct-current cell to study the electrical conductance of molten copper sulfide. Their measurements showed a high conductivity, of the order of 100 ohm-1 cm-" and a positive temperature coefficient. From electrolysis studies, Savelsberg2 concluded that molten Cu2S and molten FeS are electronic conductors. Further. he found that molten FeS has a high specific conductance, of the order of 1500 ohm-' cm-', and a small negative temperature coefficient. Pound, Derge, and Osuch,3 using an ac Kelvin circuit and a four-terminal cell, measured the specific conductance of molten Cu,S, molten FeS, and various mixtures. They found that the specific conductance of the solutions followed a roughly additive rule of mixtures. Yang, Pound, and Derge4 showed from electrolysis measurements that the mechanism of electrical conduction in molten Cu2S, FeS, and mattes is primarily electronic. Further, they observed that small additions of CuCl suppress the electronic conduction whereupon the system behaves ionically.

This report covers the period from Jan. I, 1943 to Dec. 31, 1943. During the year, II2 wells were drilled in Mississippi, as foilows: wildcats drilled and abandoned, 54; wildcats producing oil, 4; oil wells drilled in oil fields, 26; oil wells drilled in fields, dry and abandoned, 10; sulphur-test wells drilled, 14; salt-water-disposal wells, 3; core tests, I. Prospecting Geophysical work in Mississippi during 1943 amounted to 1127 crew weeks, divided as follows: reflection seismograph, 809 weeks; gravity meter, 285; magnotometer, 30; torsion balance, 3. A considerable amount of core drilling was done over a large part of the state. The complete data on this activity are not available at the present time. Salt Domes To date, the following salt domes have been discovered in Mississippi: Midway, Edwards, Glass, Newman, Tatum, Oak-vale, Kings, Halifax, D'Lo, Hazlehurst, Byrd, Leedo, Prentiss, Carson, Moselle, Monticello, Ruth, Keno, Taylorsville. New Oil Fields Lincoln County.—On March 10, 1943, the California Company completed its Smith No. I in sec. 4, T. 7 N., R. 7 E., Lincoln County, as an oil well and produced 29 bbl. of 25" gravity oil in 24 hr. through a fi-in. choke. Two outpost wells have been drilled in this area by the California Company, and both have been abandoned as dry holes. Madison County. —Love Petroleum Co. completed its J. R. Anderson No. 2, sec. 2, T. 8 N., R. I W., Madison County, on Sept. 7, 1943. This well produced 135 bbl. of approximately 30" gravity- oil in 24 hr. through a )/4-in. choke. The production comes from a sand or porosity in the upper part of the Chalk formation of the Cretaceous age. Adams County.—The California Company drilled its National Gasoline Co. of Louisiana No. I in sec. 52, T. 7 N., R. After several stem tests 545'-in. casing was set at 6850 ft. and production was obtained in the so-called Massive Sand of the Lower Tuscaloosa. This report covers the period from Jan. I, 1943 to Dec. 31, 1943. During the year, II2 wells were drilled in Mississippi, as foilows: wildcats drilled and abandoned, 54; wildcats producing oil, 4; oil wells drilled in oil fields, 26; oil wells drilled in fields, dry and abandoned, 10; sulphur-test wells drilled, 14; salt-water-disposal wells, 3; core tests, I. Prospecting Geophysical work in Mississippi during 1943 amounted to 1127 crew weeks, divided as follows: reflection seismograph, 809 weeks; gravity meter, 285; magnotometer, 30; torsion balance, 3. A considerable amount of core drilling was done over a large part of the state. The complete data on this activity are not available at the present time. Salt Domes To date, the following salt domes have been discovered in Mississippi: Midway, Edwards, Glass, Newman, Tatum, Oak-vale, Kings, Halifax, D'Lo, Hazlehurst, Byrd, Leedo, Prentiss, Carson, Moselle, Monticello, Ruth, Keno, Taylorsville. New Oil Fields Lincoln County.—On March 10, 1943, the California Company completed its Smith No. I in sec. 4, T. 7 N., R. 7 E., Lincoln County, as an oil well and produced 29 bbl. of 25" gravity oil in 24 hr. through a fi-in. choke. Two outpost wells have been drilled in this area by the California Company, and both have been abandoned as dry holes. Madison County. —Love Petroleum Co. completed its J. R. Anderson No. 2, sec. 2, T. 8 N., R. I W., Madison County, on Sept. 7, 1943. This well produced 135 bbl. of approximately 30" gravity- oil in 24 hr. through a )/4-in. choke. The production comes from a sand or porosity in the upper part of the Chalk formation of the Cretaceous age. IT is proposed to give, first, a description of the works ; second, a report of the first six months of the present blast; and third, such improvements as have been suggested by the practical working. The site selected for this furnace was, at the time of commencing work, October, 1872, entirely covered by the navigable waters of Lake Champlain. A coffer-dam was first built of cribs of round timber filled with stone, forming three sides, while the shore answered for the fourth. Considerable excavating was done with a steam-dredge, a hole being left for it to pass out. The opening was then built up, and the cribbing banked up with blue clay from the bottom of the lake, to render it water-tight and the dam pumped out; the remainder of the excavating being done by hand. All of the foundations, with the exception of the elevator-tower, and fifteen feet of the east side of hot blast, rest on the Potsdam sandstone, which forms the shore line, dipping into the lake at an angle of fifteen degrees. Owing to jogs in the formation, a much greater depth was found necessary than was at first anticipated, the foundation under the stack
