High manganese slags of low phosphorus and iron content are produced by air oxidation of high phosphorus spiegeleisen in a basic-lined converter. Control of phosphorus and iron within specification limits for ferromanganese ore feed is obtained by a unique cyclic operating procedure. Various types of slags, or synthetic manganese ore, can be made. AN affiliated paper' describes the production of high phosphorus spiegeleisen containing 14 to 23 pct Mn and up to 4 pct P in an experimental blast furnace from open-hearth slag or manganiferous iron ore. This phosphorus content is too high for use of the spiegel in normal steel-production operations. Consequently, a preferential separation must be effected whereby the manganese is concentrated in a product that is usable in industrial operations. The preferential separation methods being investigated for this phase of the work are confined to pyrometal-lurgical processes for ready incorporation into steel-plant operations. It is fortunate that manganese is more actively oxidizable than iron or phosphorus, and therein lies a preferential separation method for isolating manganese from these two elements. Silicon is more strongly oxidizable than manganese, and its oxidation precedes, or occurs simultaneously, with manganese. Therefore, manganese and silicon are separable into a high manganese oxide slag phase while the phosphorus and iron remain in the molten metallic state. Complete separation of these elements represents an ideal condition which is not generally attainable in actual operations. This pyro-metallurgical method for separating manganese from phosphorus and iron by preferential oxidation was investigated by blowing 500 lb of metal in a basic-lined vessel to obtain preliminary information on the effectiveness of the procedure. Certain conditions of attainment in the separation process are desirable in any method for removing manganese from high phosphorus spiegeleisen, such as: 1—High recovery of manganese in the oxidation product; 2—the product to be of equal or better quality than ferromanganese-grade ore—48 pct Mn minimum, less than 10 pct SiO2, and Mn-P ratio of 300:1; and 3—attainment of the enumerated objectives in a product amenable to industrial handling, such as a slag of high manganese content that will flow from the processing vessel and of sufficient fluidity for ready separation of metallic granules that may have become mixed with the manganese slag phase. Previous Work Recovery of manganese from low grade ores and industrial byproduct slags by smelting to spiegeleisen, with subsequent oxidation to synthetic ferro-manganese-feed ores, has been a subject for periodic investigation during the past four or five decades in the United States and Germany. Joseph' and associates of the Bureau of Mines North Central Experiment Station, Minneapolis, Minn., smelted manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna range, Minn., to spiegeleisen and subsequently tried air and ore oxidation procedures for concentrating the manganese into synthetic ferrograde manganese ore. Joseph's results on the operation of a side-blown basic-lined converter for air oxidation of manganese from molten spiegeleisen were so discouraging that the procedure was abandoned after 11 blowing tests. Much slag was thrown from the converter vessel; phosphorus content was four to five times the maximum allowable for ferro ore; and a manganese-iron ratio of only 2 or 3:1 was obtained in the slag instead of the required 8:1. Oxidation of manganese from spiegeleisen with about 0.5 pct P, by adding iron ore to molten spiegel in an experimental open-hearth furnace, proved moderately successful in Joseph's experiments. The main drawback to the operation was the necessity for over-oreing for effective oxidation of the manganese with consequent too high iron oxide residual in the slag. Furthermore, the phosphorus content was proportional to the iron concentration and therefore much too high, so that several hours of reduction by a carbonaceous material were required to adjust the iron and phosphorus to the desired content of high grade ferro feed. A troublesome feature of the slag product of the spiegel oxidation process was its lack of fluidity if the silica content was less than 10 pct, the concentration considered desirable for the synthetic ore. The dihedral angles of the solid-liquid interfaces were measured at various temperatures above the solidus and the interfacial energies calculated when small additions of copper, indium, lithium, magnesium, antimony, and silicon were made to an aluminum alloy containing 3 pct Sn. When the results were compared with those of the Al-Sn alloy some differences were found which could be interpreted in terms of the ability of the added element to enter into solution or form intermetallic compounds with the aluminum and tin. It was shown that in some cases considerable changes in the shape of intergvanular liquid films can be brought about by comparatively small compositional changes in the alloy. DURING the melting or solidification of an alloy a temperature range is usually found where the presence of a liquid phase may be detected at the grain boundaries of a solid. It is believed that the presence of this liquid phase is responsible for hot tearing in castings and welds and hot shortness in the working of some alloys at elevated temperatures. Rosenberg, Flemings, and Taylor1 in a study of the solidification of aluminum castings have indicated the importance of intergranular liquid films and shown that their shape and distribution at the end of solidification effect the hot tearing characteristics of the material. The shape of such intergranular liquid films are determined largely by the ratio between the solid-liquid interfacial energy (yLS) and the grain boundary energy (ySS). A measure of this ratio (yLS/ySS , relative interfacial energy) is the dihedral angle 8. The dihedral angle 0 is related to the relative interfacial energy by the following expression: Rogerson and Borland 2 have also suggested that the shape of the intergranular liquid is an important factor in determining the susceptibility of a material to hot shortness. They showed that on a comparative basis materials having the lowest dihedral angles at a given temperature gave the greatest severity of cracking. They stated that liquid in the form of globules should be less harmful than liquid in the form of extensive films as more intergranular cohesion should be possible. Rogerson and Borlland 2 also showed that the susceptibility of an A1-Sn alloy to hot cracking can be reduced by small additions of cad- mium. It was found that the cadmium gave an increase in the dihedral angle at all temperatures. Ikeuye and smith3 investigated changes in the dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy with temperature for a number of ternary alloys formed when small additions of bismuth, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc were made to an A1-Sn alloy. They found that in most instances changes in the dihedral angle were caused by compositional changes in the liquid phase; as the composition of the liquid approached that of the solid the dihedral angle decreased. They noted that the addition of a third element which was soluble in both the liquid and solid phases at a given temperature may decrease the dihedral angle (e.g., the addition of copper or zinc) but otherwise the ternary alloys formed exhibited dihedral angles between those of the A1-Sn binary alloy and those of the binary alloy of aluminum with the added element. Dwarakadasa and Krishnan4 investigated the changes in dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy with temperature when small additions of magnesium, iron, silicon, manganese, sulfur, cobalt, and silver were made to a copper alloy containing 3 pct Bi. They found that in all cases the added elements gave an increase in the dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy when compared with the values obtained for the simple binary alloy at the same temperature. It was noted that an increase in temperature gave a decrease in dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy in each of the ternary alloys studied. Similar results have been obtained by Ramachandran and Krishnan5 for the addition of small quantities of lead. This paper describes the application of dihedral angle measurement to the determination of the shapes of liquid phases at various temperatures above the solidus when small additions of copper, indium, magnesium, lithium, antimony, and silicon are made to an aluminum alloy containing nominally 3 pct Sn. An attempt is made to correlate the measurements with the relative solubility of the added elements in tin and aluminum. The work was undertaken to provide more data concerning the effects of temperature and composition on the shape of liquid films above the solidus. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the present work ternary aluminum alloys containing nominally 3 pct Sn and small additions of high-purity copper, indium, lithium, magnesium, antimony, and silicon were made. The alloys were melted in a graphite crucible under an inert atmosphere of argon and cast into ingots 6 in. long by 0.5 in. diam. The ingots were then cut into rods 1.5 in. long, given a 50 pct cold reduction, and machined into test pieces 0.5 in. long by 0.5 in, diam for heat treatment. Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 5945 was slightly more than 6000 bbl., the lowest figure since 1916. Approximately 5500 bbl. was produced from the "Mississippi lime" in Scott and Morgan Counties. The remainder was from two wells each in Clay and Fentress Counties. Thirty million cubic feet of gas was marketed off the lease in Morgan County and about 10 million cubic feet was produced in the Jamestown field in Fentress County. The production of oil by counties is shown in Table 1.

No less than eleven metals and alloys have been studied in some detail; namely, aluminum, tungsten,2 iron,3 copperI4 gold, zinc,6 cadmium, tin: lead: brass,1° and cupronickel. As a result, it is possible to frame a qualitative statement of the effect of the degree of deformation and the temperature of annealing on the structure finally attained.

This method pertains to the field of determinative mineralogy, which it provides with tools for: (1) phase identification, (2) solid solution analysis. IN 1926 one of the authors published researches on the determination and description of the iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum systems,1 including the equilibrium diagrams. In 1929, further work was carried on, including the examination by X-rays, which is recorded here. Measurements were made of changes in lattice parameters in the solid solutions. Precipitation from the solid solution and the accompanying changes in hardness were studied as well as the formation of the intermetallic compound phases upon sintering a mixture of metal powders.

Columbium single crystals were deformed in tension and compression. Reorientation by X-rays and stereographic projections of slip traces indicate that plane of slip may be considered as (110). The plastic behavior is shown to be quite similar to the deformation of molybdenum single crystals. STUDIES on the crystallography of the deformation process in body-centered cubic metals have been renewed recently with investigations of iron single crystals1-" and molybdenum single crystals.4 It is now apparent that too many exceptions to the rationalization based upon the ratio of absolute testing temperature to absolute melting point by Andrade5 exist to permit more serious discussion of this type of analysis. The considerations of resolved shear stress utilizing only planes of the type {ll0}, {112), and {123)³,6 permit analysis of the deformation only on the basis of those three types of planes. The suggestions made by Elam7 and by Greninger8 in which the slip process is envisioned as a composite slip on two nonparallel {110) planes can be illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. It may be seen that an unresolved trace on any plane containing a <111> direction may be accomplished by varying the number of atoms participating in the composite process. By further varying the number of atoms in each plane but keeping the ratio of participating atoms constant, jogs could be obtained in the traces and hence wavy slip lines could be produced. Vogel and Brick&apos; studied the behavior of a iron single crystals in which they suggest that the plane of glide is "non-crystallographic" and may be predicted from the intersection between the great circle joining the slip direction and specimen axis with the great circle whose zone axis is the slip direction. In a more recent investigation on iron single crystals, Steijn and Brick" suggest that the slip mechanism may be considered as made up of a type of composite slip occurring on {110} and {112} planes. Evidence for a possible composite nature of the slip process has been presented for the case of molybdenum in the form of analysis of asterism and specimen axis rotation." Definite proof of a composite slip process must, however, await good electron microscopic resolution of the individual traces making up the unresolved optical trace used in determining the acting slip plane. The present investigation was undertaken to study the behavior of columbium single crystals not only in tension but also in compression since the specimen axis migration should indicate the plane or planes of glide in the same manner that the specimen axis migration in tension indicates the direction of glide. The orientations of eleven crystals investigated are shown in Fig. 2. Specific orientations are missing (those in the vicinity of [Ill] and [001] and consequently the effect of orientation on the crystallography of deformation could not be considered. Experimental Procedure The 1/8 in. rods (7 in. long) were subjected to an axial tension in vacuo while at temperatures in the vicinity of 2000°C for 2 to 4 hr. This treatment resulted in large cylindrical grains (about ½ in. long) occupying the entire cross section. A number of these rods were used for the tension studies by observing the behavior of the individual grains. For the compression studies, single crystals approximately % in. long by 1/8 in. in diameter were cut from the rods; the ends were ground parallel. All specimens were polished electrolytically in a solution of 15 cc HF(48 pct) and 85 cc H2SO4 (concentrated) using a platinum cathode, a current density of 0.04 amp per sq cm and a temperature between 25" and 60°C.10 Orientations were obtained using a Laue back-reflection method (3 cm film to specimen distance) with a ½ mm collimator 9 cm long. THE literature of geophysics as applied to the discovery of mineral deposits has been very extensive during the past few years,1 but there seem to be few references to the use of the method of least squares for obtaining better interpretations of the observed data .2 There seems to be a general reluctance among geologists and engineers to acquire the technique of least squares, in spite of the fact that a thorough knowledge of the theory is not necessary for the use of the method.

THE TERM "engineer" has been defined in many ways by many men broadly speaking the statement that "an engineer is one versed in or practicing any brar1c.h of engineering" is sufficient. A rather close relation exists between the sciences of surgery and engineering. A successful surgeon must have the capacity to perform the most delicate work, under extremely circumscribed conditions. This portion of his education is purely mechanical and although marvellous in itself, it must remain secondary to that greater possession, a thorough knowledge of human anatomy coupled with a comprehensive understanding of human psychology. In sub- stance, the surgeon must not only know how to operate but what is more important, he must be able to decide when, if ever, the operation should be undertaken.

IT is an outstanding fact of Nature that many of the practical properties of substances are dependent, not on their ultimate chemical composition, but on the kind and degree of aggregation of their constituent particles. Thus, a granite boulder is unmoved by wind or water, but if reduced to a fine dust it will be blown about by the wind and washed away by the rain. Carbon in one crystalline state of aggregation (diamond) is the hardest known substance, whereas in another crystalline state (graphite) it is so soft that it is used as a lubricant. Laying too much stress on the mere chemical analysis of substances is apt to obscure the fact that the nature of the aggregation of their particles is always a factor of importance, and sometimes the most important factor. Colloid chemistry deals with matter in. a very fine state of subdivision; its sphere begins with particles just a little smaller than a wave length of light-and extends clown until they blend into molecular dimensions. With particles of this size; such phenomena as surface tension and adsorption, which depend on the development of free surface, become enormously magnified. Thus a cube of 1 cm. edge has a surface of only 6 sq. cm.; but if it is reduced to colloidal dimensions by being cut up into cubes each having an edge of 0.01 , (0.00001 mm.), it will yield one million, million, million (1,000,000,000,000,000,000) such cubes, having a combined area of 600 sq. in., or 21,274 sq. ft. The tiny force with which a drop of rain clings to the window pane becomes a. factor to be reckoned with, if the surface involved is increased millions of times. From the colloid-chemical viewpoint, metals and alloys may be regarded as jellies or sponge-like structures, the viscosity or stiffness of which at ordinary temperatures is exceedingly great; and like all jellies their properties are dependent on the composition and degree of dispersion of their constituent phases. THE Magnetic Storm Monitor is an instrument that continuously records variations in the earth&apos;s total magnetic field at a fixed location. It is intended for use in conjunction with airborne magnetometer surveys. There are stormy periods when changes in the earth&apos;s magnetic field are so violent that data obtained with airborne equipment would be of little value. The Monitor provides this information so that flights may be cancelled or terminated, thus eliminating useless flying. Moreover, when some unpredictable change in the earth&apos;s field occurs during an airborne survey, the Monitor record, showing a similar event, may serve to salvage the data. The utility of a base instrument is determined largely by its physical dimensions, power requirements, stability, and reliability. This instrument is small enough to be transported in any powered vehicle. It will operate from either a 110 v, 60 cycle power line or from an inverter powered by an automobile battery. The development of an electronic feedback circuit that measures the magnetic field strength and a fabricated buckout magnet having essentially zero temperature has contributed to instrument stability and reliability. A tripod supporting the magnetometer head, a chassis housing all electronic components, and an Esterline Angus Recorder comprise the equipment, shown in Fig. 1. The vibrator-type inverter shown is used when a 110 v, 60 cycle power line is inaccessible. Approxi- mately 60 w are required to operate the instrument and the circuit is insensitive to reasonable power line voltage changes or transients. The head unit contains a fluxgate-type magnetometer element and a special magnet mounted on a ceramic structure. Since this magnet is used to buck out most of the earth&apos;s field, adjustments are provided for properly positioning the magnet with respect to the element. This assembly is mounted in such a way that the element can be oriented into the total field. Fluxgate Element: The heart of the Storm Monitor is a fluxgate-type magnetometer element. Knowledge of the state of stress at the bottom of a drillhole is of practical importance in rock drilling, since the induced stresses must exceed the strength of the rock in order to cause fracture. This note reports on a numerical method to determine the stress distribution at the bottom of a borehole induced by a static bit load and overburden and fluid pressures. The procedure adopted is similar to that for the plane-strain, discrete model employed by Harper and Ang.1,2 The rock medium is considered to be homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic-perfectly-plastic. Purification of solutions can involve various treatment methods. In the normal sequence of metals recovery by hydrometallurgy, the ore is initially prepared for leaching by grinding to the desired optimum mesh size as dictated by the leaching parameters. Following leaching and liquids- solids separation, the resultant solution is ready for purification. The use, or introduction of solvent extraction into a plant, can be either a major or a minor part of the metal recovery process as shown by the following list where solvent extraction is normally considered: a) recovery of a metal by a simple leaching of the broken ore, e.g., copper from dump leaching where there are only the three main steps of leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning (1);

COPPER ore from Kennecott Copper&apos;s Ray mine, about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix, Ariz., is concentrated at the company&apos;s mill at Hayden, some 18 miles south of the mine. The Hayden mill is currently treating 16,000 tons of ore per day by flotation, using raconite, a crude butyl xanthate, as a collector for the sulfide copper minerals and lime as a pyrite depressant.1 The ore contains significant amounts of nonsulfide copper minerals, but recovery of these values has been low. The Hayden mill is now being modified to provide for treatment of future ores by leach- precipitation-flotation (L-P-F). This modification, costing about $5 million, is expected to reduce the loss of nonsulfide copper values and improve overall copper recovery by an additional 2 lb per ton of ore.

IT is a somewhat curious circumstance that the newest of the Institute&apos;s several awards should be conferred in the oldest of our several professional fields-for there is little question that geology and mining have antedated metallurgy and petroleum. Perhaps so did geophysics. After all, one geophysical instrument, the magnetic compass, has been success- fully employed for many centuries. Young in years the Jackling Award may be, but in distinction-whether in terms of the title it bears or in terms of the first three medalists (Reno Sales, E. D. Gardner, and the late Father Mace1wane)-the Jackling Award is already one of the ranking awards of the Institute. The name of the 1957 medalist will bring added luster to an already illustrious roll.

In an investigation of various equiatomic alloys of transition elements, Dwightl did not find evidence for the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn. More recently waterstrat2 has reported the occurrence of this structure in the alloy his sample had been homogenized at 1150°C and subsequently reannealed at 725°C after crushing to powder. The purpose of this note is to confirm the existence of the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn and to report a lattice parameter. An equiatomic alloy was prepared by arc-melting under an argon atmosphere vanadium and electrolytic manganese having a purity of at least 99.9 pet. The composition was obtained by charging an excess of manganese and monitoring the weight loss until the stoichiometric composition was achieved; the assumption that the loss during melting was due to the vaporization of manganese appears to be a valid one.&apos; The calculated composition of the sample prepared was 49.85 at. pct V and 50.15 at. pct Mn. Specimens taken from the fractured as-cast buttons were wrapped in molybdenum foil and encapsulated in quartz capsules under vacuum; there was no evidence of a reaction between the alloy and foil. The X-ray patterns were obtained using filtered copper or chromium radiation with a Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera having a diameter of 114.6 mm. The CrKa radiation is best suited for detecting the superlattice lines since it overcomes the slight difference in scattering powers of the components by making use of the anomalies in atomic scattering factor which occur when the frequency of the radiation is close to the characteristic absorption frequency of one of the elements.394 A specimen in the as-cast condition, as well as one which had been annealed for 1 week at 900°C and water-quenched, gave a diffraction pattern for the disordered bcc solid solution. However, when samples were homogenized at 900°C for 3 weeks followed by a subsequent anneal at 700°C for 6 to 7 weeks and then water-quenched or furnace-cooled, the (loo), (1111, and (210) Ka superlattice lines were observed in films taken with chromium radiation. An ao = 2.904 * 0.001 was determined by a Nelson-Riley extrapolation from a film taken with CuKa radiation. The author wishes to thank Mr. J. W. Downey and Mr. L. J. Coal&apos;s participation in the domestic energy market depends to a very large extent upon the cost of coal delivered to consumers. Today the principal use of coal in the U.S. is in steam-electric generating stations. Generally, it is the delivered cost per million Btu&apos;s that is given the greatest weight in choosing either oil, natural gas or coal as the fuel used in these power plants. There are three major cost components of generating electric energy in steam-electric plants. These expenses expressed in terms of "dollars per kilowatt year" are: (1) operation and maintenance of necessary facilities, (2) fixed charges of necessary capital investment, and (3) fuel.
