The paper relates to the laboratory and pilot plant studies that have been carried out by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., Metallurgical Research Div., in developing the ammonia pressure leach process for extracting Cu, Ni, Co, and S from high grade Ni concentrate produced from Lynn Lake ores and describes in some detail the chemistry of the process. In the leaching stage air, ammonia, and sulphide minerals react in a sequence of inter-related steps to produce soluble amines of Ni, Cu, and Co in a solution containing sulphate, thiosulphate, polythionate, and sulphamate ions and a controlled amount of free ammonia, the iron and other components of the concentrate remaining as an insoluble residue which is separated from the leach solution by filtration. The pregnant solution produced in leaching is further treated by boiling to precipitate and remove Cu as cuprous sulphide, leaving a copper-free solution with a composition suitable for subsequent precipitation of Ni and Cu by H,

Discussion of the paper of WALTER 0. SNELLING, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 100, April, 1915, pp. 695 to 704. A. C. McLAUGHLIN, San Francisco, Cal.-It seems to me that Mr. Snelling's work, if it is what it appears to be, is one of the most important contributions to petroleum technology that has been brought out iii the last 25 years. If his end products are what they seem to be, he has made a discovery, which, in my judgment, will revolutionize the petroleum industry. As to industrially carrying out these processes I do not think there is the slightest difficulty, for I have had some work recently where crude oils were handled successfully at a temperature of 750°F. and pressure of 750 lb. per square inch. WILLIAMS.-Tests were made in Dr. Rittman's experimental plant at Pittsburgh, upon samples of residuum furnished by Mr. Bell, the residuum being the remainder of the crude oil after the lighter fractions had been removed. After the material had been run through Dr. Rittman's plant, yields of from 43 to 58 per cent. of material, boiling under 150°C. were obtained. The distillate had a peculiar odor, due to the presence of benzene, toluene, and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. W. N. BEST, New York, N. Y.-What is the difference between the Rittman and the Snelling process or system? WILLIAM A. WILLIAMs.-The fundamental difference is that reactions take place under relatively higher temperatures and pressures and with none of the oil present in its original or liquid state, while the reactions secured by Mr. Snelling and other investigators have been from the liquids in the presence of some vapors. Under such conditions as Mr. Snelling operates, the temperatures and pressures used are limited and the flexibility in the control of these variables is extremely limited when compared with the Rittman process.

COLD work destroys long-range order, as was first observed by Dehlinger and Graf.1 Dahl2 showed that the mechanical disordering caused by cold work produces changes in those properties that are affected by long-range order. The existence of order has a marked effect on tile manner in which an alloy deforms and therefore on its mechanical properties.L' The relation between order and deformation behavior however, is only beginning to be understood. Seemann and G1ander4 suggested that cold work reduces an ordered alloy to a kind of gruel of antiphase domains. According to Cottrell,5 superdis-locations and pairs of dislocations in a slip plane connected by a strip of anti-phase domain boundary provide deformation mechanisms which do not change the state of order. In general, however, slip may be expected to produce new domain boundaries and destroy order if dislocations move on intersecting planes or cut through existing domain boundaries. The yield strength of an ordered alloy may pass through a maximum with decreasing domain size.5"7 The reduction of domain size resulting from cold work may, therefore, lead to a maximum in strength properties. Flinn8 suggests that dislocations can climb by short-range diffusion during deformation and thus can generate domain boundaries not only on slip planes, but also on other planes which will be those with the lowest domain-boundary energy. It has long been known that the rate of strain hardening of an alloy in the ordered state is larger than in the disordered state.3'9 Also the slip bands in ordered CU3, AU10 and Ni3Mn" are finer than in the disordered alloys. The stress which causes initial yielding in Cu,Au passes through a maximum with decreasing domain size.6'12 A maximum has also been observed in the hardness of ordered Ni3Mn as a function of strain.' These observations suggest, but do not prove, that domain size reduction occurs during deformation. According to Fisher13 slip destroys short-range order and thus the strength of an alloy is related to the degree of short-range order present. Rudman and Averbach14 and Averbach et a1.,15 demonstrated that cold work reduces short-range order in copper-gold and gold-silver alloys. Destruction of long-range and short-range order by cold work implies slip on an appreciable fraction of planes. Yielding of an alloy in which short-range order exists or antiphase domain boundaries are present should be discontinuous because the first dislocations moving across the slip plane meet with the largest resistance.5 Such discontinuous yielding has been observed in CU3AU6,16 and Cuzn.l7 This phenomenon, however, can also be explained by mechanisms not involving order.b The published investigations of the effects of cold work on alloys with long-range or short-range order have not been covered thoroughly in reviews of order-disorder phenomena. These investigations, therefore, will be listed here. They have been concerned with strength properties> 2,3,6,8,9,12,16-21 electrical resistivity,2,4,18,19,21-26: thermoelectric power, magnetic properties,2,18,21,26 and X-ray strain'1,2,14,15,27,28 The slip systems and the appearance of the microstructure after deformation in ordered and disordered alloys have also been investigated. 6.10.ll,l7,23,29,30 The alloys used in these investigations were copper-gold. 1-4,6,9,10,14,16,18 23-26,28,29 copper-zinc. L7. 19. 20,30 nickel-manganese,2 11,21 iron-aluminum. iron-nickel,' copper palladium,4,18,22 gold-silver.4,18,22 and palladium-silver-copper.4 In the work reported here. the changes in properties of polycrystalline Cu3Au were investigated as functions of strain in wire drawing and rolling. The rich deposits of magnetic iron-ore in the Highlands of northern New Jersey attracted the attention of iron-workers at the time of the earliest settlements in that region. The outcrops of the oreshoots at the Dickerson mine, at Mount Hope, and at Hibernia, in Morris county, and at Ringwood, in Passaic count,y, which were doubtless such as would lead to discovery, location and development of nearly all the large iron-mines in that part of the State, appear to have had their beginnings where the ore cropped out on the surface or where it was scarcely concealed by a thin mantle of earth. Through the use of pressure and production records, formation properties and bottom-hole sample data, the performance of an oil reservoir may be studied analytically to define and evaluate the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Use is made of material-halance methods and the equations for natural water encroachment. to estimate reserves. Methods for calculation of pressures are given. A study of the Jones sand, Schuler field, Arkansas, has been made and is given here to illustrate the value of the methods discussed. Introduction With the decreasing rate of discovery of new oil reserves, attention is necessarily focused on the efficient development, evaluation, and production of existing reserves. From the nation's viewpoint, the necessity of conserving resources is obvious. From the operator's viewpoint, the problem is to lengthen the period of profitable operation, in an attempt to increase the return on his investment. To do this the operator must take advantage of the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Natural water encroachment, the nemesis of profitable operation in the past, can be and is being harnessed to produce a greater oil recovery during the stage of flowing production. Proper evaluation of water encroachment rates and a fuller under- standing of reservoir behavior dictate the appropriate production procedures. Complacency in hit and miss production is obsolete. Oil production must and will approach the efficiency of other businesses, such as manufacturing. A manufacturer will not place an article on the market until he has fully investigated the processes involved, additional investment in equipment, costs of production, and expected profits. These may be modified by actual experience at a later date, but at least he begins with an idea of expected return. It is just as logical that an oil operator should investigate these same factors during the development and the early period of production of an oil reserve. The complexity of the problems existing in oil reservoirs should not be underestimated. Conversely, they should not be regarded as insoluble. Many completely defy solution, but there are others that can be solved completely or attacked intelligently to yield approximate results. The petroleum engineer has many tools, both figuratively and literally, at his disposal. Physical data such as core analyses, electrical logs, bottom-hole sample analyses, and bottom-hole pressures are accumulated extensively. Advances in the analytics of fluid flow have kept pace with the advances in measurement of physical data. It is the purpose of this paper to show how some of these records may be analyzed to define certain phases of reservoir behavior.

MANY methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,1 or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,7 cement copper.8 4. Precipitating the silver by zinc dust held in a Hooch crucible and determination with a standard solution of sulphocyanate.9 5. Electrolysis.10 6. Colorimetry.11

Estimates of the "plasticity" of a metal are commonly deduced from three types of test—tensile, torsion and impact. The several results have been more or less at variance, though this disparity has attracted little notice, largely perhaps because they have been expressed in different terms. The discrepancy between the results of the three tests becomes obvious when each is made at a series of low temperatures, for the temperature range within which the "plasticity" of iron largely disappears proves to be very different in the three types of test. The rather abrupt disappearance of "plasticity" of iron within a narrow temperature range cannot be due to any physicochemical change (such as a precipitation) taking place in the material at that time, because the original plasticity is immediately regained when the temperature of the material is brought above the sensitive range. Accordingly this difference in behavior shows that the "plasticity" of a metal depends upon the mode of action of the stresses which produce the deformation, and therefore upon the method of test. Analysis of the stresses leads to the conclusion that the observed plasticity of a metal is determined by the relation between its resistance to rupture by separation and its resistance to shear (slip), on the one hand, and between the effective normal and shearing stresses on the other; and that the relation between the two resistances does not in general remain constant with change of temperature, and may somehow be altered to some extent by the previous treatment of the specimen. This suggests the view that the results of none of the usual mechanical tests are directly comparable even for a single metal tested at a series of temperatures, or for a series of metals at one temperature, because the proportion of the total resistance of the metal to the test contributed by the

THE ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst.
