Cases (Attachè de Recherche and Charge de Recherche, respectively, Centre de Recherches sur la Valorisation des Minerais, Institut Polytechnique de Nancy, Nancy, France)-The role of CO, in carbonate flotation is one of the parameters of a complex phenomenon: the adsorption of salts of fatty acids onto minerals. The authors therefore must be congratulated for their work. Their experimental results suggest some questions: 1) Recovery with C02, benzoic acid, or HCl, look very similar [(Fig. 1)] to that with the use of air; however, the recovery decreases very slightly (<10%). But in these two kinds of experiments, two parameters are different: the pH which is near 5.8 (with C02) becomes 9.1(without C02) and the concentration of Ca* I x 10-3 mole per 1 (without C02) becomes 1.9 X 10&apos; mole per 1 (without COO. 2) Adsorption experiments (Fig. 2) permit computing the surface coverage 9 which is 7.4% (without C02) and 8% (without CO_.) for an initial concentration of 12 X 10-6 mole per 1 in sodium oleate. It seems doubtful to us that this small variation can produce large increases of the recovery in flotation. 3) It is difficult to correlate adsoption and flotation experiments because they do not seem to have been done with the same size of particles. The concentration needed to obtain 95% recovery (Fig. 1) is about 3.0 X 10_" mole per l, that is, 1.13 X 10-6 mole for about

Simple methods can be used for the determination of the residual stresses in thin walled tubing if the stresses consist of high tensile stresses at the one surface and high compressive stresses at the other surface. Such a stress distribution is approximated in sunk tubing and in deep-drawn shells. It is possible to cut sections from such articles in such a manner that a major part of the residual stress is relieved by a bending of the Part that is separated from the adjacent metal. The circumferential stress is evaluated from the change in diameter D, occurring on splitting a length of tubing (Fig. Ib) or from deflection resulting from the cutting out of a circumferential tongue (Fig. Ia) .6 The bending moment M released by such a flexure is. WHILE the mind of the financier does not normally run along channels similar to those of his technical adviser, engineers, because of their exactness, are ever more called upon to manage affairs where financial matters are involved. It is, true, not a relatively large number have thus far functioned in this capacity. It is also true that the essentially financial mind could not serve in a responsible engineering position; for to be a successful engineer one requires precise thinking, making due allowance for factors of safety. To be a financier seems to require less aptitude for exact thinking than of enthusiasm and confidence in capitalizing prospective possibilities. Both require imagination, the engineer being, more conscious of the limitations of natural conditions. It is to be regretted that the engineer&apos; stands so far aloof from financial matters. Many consider them- selves successful, as did Steinmetz, as long as their reward is the consciousness that they are giving supreme service to mankind. They are &apos;generally happy in their work and, like our honored brothers who are teachers, gain their greatest satisfaction, not in the amount of their remuneration so much as in the service rendered society and in the excellence of results achieved. Indeed, these sentiments bespeak character and command respect.

Self-diffusion in zinc at temperatures below 200°C has been studied using both single crystal and polycrystal samples. Anomalous results were obtained for single crystal samples, the data indicating that in some cases grain boundary diffusion predominated. These anomalous results are presumed to be due to low angle lineage boundaries in the single crystals. When volume diffusion occurred in either single or polycrystal samples, the values for the diffusion coefficient were as much as several orders of magnitude larger than would be expected from high temperature data. ONSIDERABLE work has been done on self-^-*diffusion at temperatures in the neighborhood of two thirds of the melting temperature (in OK) and higher, but very little has been done at lower temperatures. This is particularly true of self-diffusion in single crystals. This paper reports work on self-diffusion in zinc at temperatures below 200 °C where both polycrystalline and single crystal samples have been used. The measurements were made using both the sectioning and absorption techniques. The experiments on diffusion at low temperatures were initiated primarily for three reasons: to obtain data from single crystal diffusion covering a wide range of temperatures, to obtain values of the activation energy for grain boundary diffusion, and to obtain, if possible, a lower limit to the temperatures at which the absorption technique may be used. It is possible to determine whether volume or grain boundary diffusion predominates at low temperatures by analyzing the manner in which the concentration of the diffusing atoms varies with the depth of penetration. The analysis is possible only for the sectioning technique. For volume diffusion and for the boundary conditions of the present experiment, the curve of the logarithm of the concentration, C, vs the square of the penetration depth, x, is a straight line with the slope proportional to — 1/D. If grain boundary diffusion predominates, Fisher&apos; has shown that a curve of In C vs the first power of the penetration depth should be a straight line. This linear dependence of concentration on depth has been observed experimentally by several investigators. (See, for example, refs. 3 and 4.) Following Fisher&apos;s analysis, the grain boundary diffusion coefficient can be written as where 8 is the grain boundary width, D, is the volume diffusion coefficient at the temperature involved, t is the time of diffusion, C is the concentration of diffusing material, and x is the depth of penetration. A more general analysis employing the same model as Fisher&apos;s but with fewer assumptions has been given by Whipple.&apos; In contrast to Fisher&apos;s analysis the more general analysis of Whipple does not always yield a straight line relation between In C and x. Recently Turnbull and Hoffman have discussed both analyses and have applied the Fisher-Whipple model to a more refined dislocation model of the grain boundary. They have also discussed the possibility of a large effect of grain boundary direction on diffusion. In the case of the absorption technique, for which results are also given, one simply gets a value for the diffusion coefficient with no indication of the predominating mechanism. Experimental Techniques Single crystals of 99.99+ pct Zn were grown using a modified Bridgman method. Polycrystal samples were prepared in three grain sizes (small, about 4 mm2; medium, about 9 mm&apos;; and large, about 25 mmz) by quenching, air cooling, and furnace cooling. The grains of the polycrystalline samples tended to be columnar, with some preferred texture such that the c-axis was inclined at about 20" to 25" from the normal to the diffusion face, particularly in the medium and large grain size samples. The samples were cut from the rod, polished, and heavily etched, and faces cut accurately parallel using a jeweler&apos;s lathe. They were again etched to remove the lathe smear and annealed for 3 hr at 250" to 300°C. After annealing, they were etched, examined, and the orientation determined by Laue back reflection photographs. They were then electroplated with Zn. The plated surfaces were examined for uniformity; nonuniform coatings were removed by etching and the samples replated without additional preparation. For the diffusion anneals, the samples were placed in pairs, with active faces together, in evacuated Pyrex tubes. Constant temperature baths were used, and the variation in temperature did not exceed ±l°C, Diffusion runs were made at l00°,

The influence of particle size and concentration on the development of chip hold-down pressure (CHDP) was studied in an apparatus designed to measure the change of filtration rate during the first second of the filtration process. CHDP is controlled by the "bridging" particles (i.e., particles in the 50 to 0.2 micron range), whereas filter loss is controlled by the colloid fraction. The results indicated that a fast drilling fluid with a low filter loss could be obtained if the concentration of bridging solids and the viscosity were kept very low. A novel group of drilling fluids, which we have named colloid emulsions, was developed to meet the above requirements. These colloid emulsions are made by dispersing art oleophilic colloid in oil and emulsifying about 5 per cent of this dispersion in water or a dense brine. Good results have been obtained in field trials with emulsions which use asphalt as the oleophilic colloid. INTRODUCTION In recent years it has been found that fast rates of penetration can be maintained in hard formations by using "clear" water as a drilling fluid. In some cases, however, water cannot be used because the very high down-hole filter loss creates various difficulties in drilling, in logging, or in producing the well. It then becomes necessary to "mud up", which results in a decrease in drilling rate. The reason that mud decreases drilling rates is a complex subject which has been well covered by such authors as Garnier and van Lingen, Cunningham and Eenink,&apos; and van Lingen.3 One of the principal factors involved is the tendency of the drilling fluid to develop a filter cake on the bottom of the hole. The pressure differential which develops across this filter cake opposes the action of the bit in dislodging chips from the rock. This pressure differential is referred to by Garnier and van Lingen&apos; as the chip hold-down pressure, which is denoted by the initials CHDP in this paper. The work described in this paper was undertaken to develop a drilling fluid which would minimize CHDP but which would still have a low filter loss—in other words, a fluid which would deposit a filter cake on the sides but would lay little or no filter cake on the bottom of the hole. EVALUATION OF CHDP EXPERIMENTAL Conditions governing the growth of filter cake on the sides of the hole are obviously different from those on the bottom of the hole. On the sides of the hole, cake will form continuously but at a decreasing rate, until eventually the rate of growth will equal the rate of cake erosion by the mud stream.&apos; On the bottom of the hole, each time a bit tooth dislodges a chip the cake is removed, a fresh rock surface is exposed, and the filtration process must start over again. Thus the CHDP is determined by the amount of cake which can form in the interval between successive tooth strikes at a particular spot, normally a fraction of a second. Our first step therefore was to study filtration rates over the first second or so of the filtration process. These tests were conducted in the simple type of dynamic filter cell shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this cell the mud was filtered through a train of rock cores while rotating blades kept the mud flowing over the surface of the core. The procedure was to evacuate the cores to 0.05 mm of mercury, saturate with brine, and assemble in the holder under brine. The permeability of the core train was then determined. A plastic seal was placed on the face of the core train, and a rip cord was attached from the seal to one of the blades. At the start of the test, 500 psi was applied to the mud, and the meniscus in the capillary measuring tube was adjusted to zero. When the blades were started, t,he seal was ripped from the face of the core, and filtration began. The following experiments and researches were originally conducted by Dr. Heinrich Rcessler, chief of the German Gold and Silver Parting Establishment at Frankfort-on-the-Main, for the sole purpose of abating the nuisance created by the discharge into the air of the sulphurous and sulphuric acids generated in the process of parting bullion by sulphuric acid. The results achieved have, however, an important bearing not only on this process, but are of value in the manufacture of sulphuric acid and sulphate of copper from sulphurous gases derived from any source. It has now been in successful operation for a term of years at Dr. Roessler&apos;s own works, and has been lately introduced with satisfactory results at the royal mints of Kremnitz and Munich, and the well-known establishment of Johnson Mathey & Co., of London.

BEFORE the war we often heard the term "Big Business." And there were complaints of the ills and abuses attributed to bigness in business. Although there were examples where the small businessmen spoke for their rights and sought protection from the bigger ones, it has only been in recent war years that a tendency has developed definitely to divide the business of our nation into the big and the small. In some cases, those with an eye to the political value of the vastly greater number of small businessmen of the country have fomented this division by hurrying to the protection of these more numerous voters, and intentionally or not have emphasized in their writings and verbal attacks any and all differences of these interests that could either be found or fabricated to, suit the occasion. It has become another example of breaking the people into classes and thus setting up the basis for the claims of one class against another, and the subsequent demand for legislation and Governmental aid. The terms "big" and "small" are purely relative. One businessman, employing a hundred men, told me recently he did not know which adjective would be more appropriately applied to his operation. He did not know whether he should join the small operators&apos; group that had been organized, or should consider himself big. He said that his present plant seemed big to him when he looked back to its humble beginning many years ago with a couple of men in two rooms. Yet, when compared with many of his competitors who employ thousands, his was small. He did add, however, that he probably became big one day a few years ago when the union moved in and organized his employees.

In their analysis of Eqs. 29 and 30, the authors correctly deduce the following behavior limits for the "differential capacitance model". 1. When the rate group a is sufficiently large, the model reduces to that implied by Eq. 1, i.e., the simple convection-diffusion model. 2. When the rate group a is sufficiently small, the model reduces to that implied by Eq. 1 with 1 replaced by 1, i.e., the simple convection-diffusion model with a total pore volume equal to that occupied by the mobile fluid in the original model. Unfortunately, the authors&apos; solution, Eq. C-1, to the transformed versions of Eqs. 29 and 30 does not exhibit the same limiting behavior. For example, as a approaches zero, Eq. C-1 reduces to the solution to Eq. 1 or, equivalently, the solution to Eqs. 29 and 30 for sufficiently large values of a. Therefore, it can be concluded that Eq. C-1 is not a general solution to Eqs. 29 and 30; this conclusion can be easily verified by substitution. I suggest that the correct form of Eq. C-1 is the following: It is generally realized that accounting for dispersion effects is an extremely tricky business; therefore no one should criticize the pragmatic approach of Coats and Smith who proceeded by accessible theory, made use of some available phenomenology, and who then took the trouble to check the consequences, against their own carefully undertaken experimental results. Here I should like to defend three assertions: (1) Coats and Smith copy the error of previous authors in the formulation of the so-called simple diffusion model (which error is then retained in their differential capacitance model); (2) improving the fit between data and the predictions of an arbitrary model by increasing the number of parameters is a triviality unless the parameters are disposable by being independently determined; and (3) existing experimental procedures lack sufficient resolution to clarify some current theoretical uncertainties. Taking first the view that all theoretical approaches (whether constructed by statistical, finite difference, or continuum arguments) tend to reduce to the same model form as fixed by the number and nature of the disposable parameters, one notices that the "finite-stage" model of Deans1 is equivalent to the Coats and Smith so-called differential capacitance model for the pertinent case where a

Transportation is the minerals business. Once upon a time the geologist, the engineer and later the metallurgist reigned supreme, but the leading role in mineral development today is the economist-especially the transportation economist. Obviously this trend is more important for large volume, low value mine-to-market movements of such commodities as iron ore, phosphate, potash, coal and petroleum. But, transportation is of sufficient importance to all mining activities to be included in forward planning. Civilization has been influenced by transportation developments to an extent little understood or appreciated. Although industrialists are capable of intelligent historical analysis of this phenomenon, too frequently they have failed to project, or anticipate those changes in transportation techniques which will influence the pattern of industrial growth.

(communication to the Secretary): Le Chatelier&apos;s pyrometer is certainly a most convenient and accurate instrument for the laboratory, and one that may be used under some conditions in the mill. I have used it for several years and with great satisfaction. Like Prof. Roberts-Austen and unlike Herr Blass, I have always found that its indications remain constant over long periods. Like Prof. Roberts-Austen, also, I find it possible, in a quiet place, to read with extreme accuracy ; and, by the use of a telescope, I can read temperatures to within a degree, for some delicate determinations which I have in hand. Variations in the temperature of the room affect the readings of the instrument far less than one would expect. When the current is cut off, the mirror does not always return exactly to the same place; in other words, the zero shifts appreciably, and must be determined often, indeed every few hours if accuracy be desired. In some cases I have had it determined within a very few minutes of every important reading. To this end a switch should he introduced, so that the circuit may be broken readily. With this arrangement we can determine accurately the position of the zero within a very few seconds of the time of taking any especially important reading. The chief causes of the variation of the zero which I have noticed are as follows: a. The suspension may not be tight enough, so that the momentum of the galvanometer frame as it swings makes its supporting wires slip in their bearings. b. Changes in the position of neighboring iron objects may deflect the mirror. c. Changes in the temperature of the room may, perhaps, change the torsion of the suspension wires, and so shift the mirror. d. Dust may attach itself to the galvanometer frame, and by friction against the surrounding fixed parts of the galvanometer, may

C ONDITIONS have not been favorable for new developments in any line. It has been a period, how- ever in which recent developments have been subjected to the severest tests. Those which have been able to hold their own in the severe competition of 1932 must be considered fully proved commercial processes. The continuous vertical-muffle retort plant at Palmer- ton is reported to have been in operation at practically full capacity throughout the year. The high quality of metal produced and the low operating costs are factors which have kept this plant running when many of the older furnaces were shut down. The plant at Meadow- brook, W. Va., is also reported to have been in steady operation throughout the year. Average retort life is said to be better than two years with about three-quarters of the original retorts still in operation after 2 ½ years.

On December 31, 1959, there existed in the United States 15,993 slot-type coke ovens capable of producing 81,447,700 net tons of coke. These ovens were concentrated in 74 coke plants in 21 different states. As of the same date, there were 7448 beehive ovens in existence at 45 plants in the states of Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Total annual capacity of the existing beehive ovens was 4,368,800 net tons, but only 5148 ovens with a capacity of 3,131,600 tons were in operating condition. It is interesting to compare the average dimensions of slot-type ovens built during recent years with the 30 ft x 5 ½ ft x 16 ½ in. ovens erected at Syracuse, N. Y. in 1892. A composite oven built according to the average dimensions of all those erected between 1954 and 1958, for instance, would be 39 ft long. 12 ft high, and 18 in. in width. The coal capacity would be 16 tons as against the 4.4 tons which could be charged to the Syracuse ovens. Of the 15.993 slot- type ovens in existence at the end of 1959, by far the greater number were built by the Koppers Co. whose total of 11,280 ovens included 7891 Koppers- Becker and 3389 Koppers ovens. Of the remainder, there were 3260 Wilputte, 1350 Semet-Solvay, 63 Otto, and 40 Simon Carves ovens. By-product coke oven plants are usually classified either as furnace or merchant plants. According to the definitions used by the US Bureau of Mines, the former are "those that are owned by or financially affiliated with iron and steel companies whose main business is producing coke for use in their own blast furnaces. All other coke plants are classified as merchant. They include those that manufacture metallurgical, industrial, and residential heating grades of coke for sale on the open market; coke plants associated with chemical companies or gas utilities; and those affiliated with local iron works, where only a small part (less than 50 pct of their output) is used in affiliated blast furnaces." The annual coke capacity of the merchant plants during 1959 was 10,393,000 tons. However, the by-product oven of today is essentially an appurtenance of the iron and steel industry, rather more than 87 pct of total by- product coking capacity being concentrated at furnace plants. This was not always so. There was a time when the merchant plants played a much greater part in meeting the US demand for coke and gas. High noon for the merchant plants was reached during the early 1930&apos;s. By 1932 there were as many by- product oven installations being operated by the merchant sector of the industry as by the coke divisions of the iron and steel industry (44 of each), and in the same year the merchant plants produced 46.5 pct of all by-product coke made in the country. Since that time their contribution has drastically declined. In 1940 merchant plants were responsible for only 23.2 pct of total US production, and by 1950 their number had decreased to 30 plants which turned out 18.5 pct of the total by-product coke made. At the end of 1959 only 20 of the 74 existing by-product oven installations were merchant plants. They ac- counted for 12.5 pct of the year&apos;s production, or 6,849,786 net tons. This percentage has remained fairly constant since 1954. There are several reasons for the decline of the merchant coking industry. For example. On the grounds of economy, quality control, continuity of supply, and so on, the iron and steel industry usually prefers to control its own mines and carbonize its own coal at or near to the blast furnace rather than rely on independent operators for metallurgical coke. As the steel companies have enlarged their own coking facilities, so has the need for coke obtained from other sources declined. Furthermore, not only has the steel industry increased in self-sufficiency by building mare coke ovens during recent years, but it has also progressively improved the fuel efficiency of its blast furnaces. During the years 1947-49 the average coke consumption per ton of pig iron was 1892.8 lb. During 1958 the corresponding figure was 1613.4 lb. There are many individual furnaces where still better results are being obtained, and further reductions in the average may be expected. Perhaps the greatest threat to the merchant coking plant has been the fantastic increase in the use of natural gas and petroleum products for purposes which manufactured gas once served. So deadly has the com- petition from natural gas and oil been that it has almost eliminated by-product oven installations owned by public utilities. In the peak years of the early 1930&apos;s there were 23 such public utility plants. In 1960 only two were left. One of these, owned by the Citizens Gas and Coke Utility, was at Indianapolis, Ind.; the other was the plant operated by the Philadelphia Electric Co. at Chester, Pa.
