The January-February number of the Journal of the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa, 1943, is made up entirely of a discussion of Ball Wear in Cylindrical Mills. Following the principal paper by T. K. Prentice are several remarkably pertinent and carefully prepared discussions. Few persons in this country would be likely to see this publication, and since the information presented is new and of current interest, it seems desirable to abstract and review this publication for the benefit of the members of the A.I.M.E. The purpose of the investigation is stated in the first two paragraphs of Prentice's paper, as follows: Early in 1941, The Chamber of Mines Steel Products, Limited, initiated a series of tests under semi-working scale conditions to determine, if possible, those physical and chemical properties of a ball which make it resistant to wear when used in a cylindrical mill as a grinding medium, with the primary object of incorporating those beneficial qualities in the balls being produced at their works. This paper describes the tests carried out and discusses the results obtained. From these results it was possible to formulate a new theory relating to ball wear in cylindrical mills. This theory is presented in the second portion of this paper. Practical Ball-mill Tests in a Cylindrical Mill Part I of the paper begins with a discussion of the methods used for the manu- facture of grinding balls in South Africa. The following paragraph is of particular interest. The cast steel ingots, 4¼ in. square by 3 ft. 6 in. long, are re-heated in a gas-fired sloping stationary-hearth furnace and then rolled in a six-pass continuous mill into 25/8 in. round billets. Some of these billets are then removed and cut into suitable lengths for forging into 4 in., 3¼ in. , 3 in. or 2½ in. balls by means of three Drop and two Beche hammers, but the greater number, whilst still at about 1,000, pass directly into a set of scroll rolls which produce, in an ingenious manner, finished 3 in. balls direct from the 25/8 in. billets. Except in special cases, all balls are allowed to cool in the atmosphere and are not water quenched. Details of the Tests In order to enable the reader to evaluate properly the results and conclusions in the rest of the paper and in the discussions following the paper, most of the information presented by the author under this heading is quoted: The testing unit was a nominal 30 in. diameter and 18 in. long centre discharge Denver Ball Mill. The ore pulp to the ball mill comprised a small portion of the normal feed to one of the fourteen City Deep 5 ft. 6 in. X 22 ft. tube mills, and the grinding media consisted of the balls under test plus other balls to give the desired load. INDUSTRIAL Pittsburgh, the center of the coal and iron and steel industry of the world, was host to the Coal Division at its Fall Meeting held there on Oct. 21 and 22 at the William Penn Hotel. The past year has witnessed remarkable progress in new methods of mining and burning of coal and many of the papers on the program discussed these developments. Nearly 100 had registered at the time of the first session on Wednesday morning and this number increased to 168 on Thursday. Owing to the large number of papers on the program, eighteen in all, it was necessary to hold group meetings on Thursday morning, with a capacity attendance at each meeting. . Chairman McAuliffe was on hand early Wednesday morning to open the meeting. George Otis Smith, representing President Lovejoy, came over from Cleveland where he attended the meetings of the Institute of Metals Division. Secretary Parsons arrived later from Cleveland and spent the whole morning with the executive committee of the Division. Doctor Smith, Secretary Parsons, and J. T. Breunich were the official representatives from Institute headquarters.

FOR MANY YEARS lead and zinc have had the so-called protection of a tariff and it is the purpose of the following brief discussion to show what' such protection actually accomplishes with a view to forecasting the possible results of the present copper tariff. In analyzing the subject, tabulations of the United States production, consumption, imports and exports, including ore and concentrates and all of the metallic products, of both lead and zinc have been made for each year since 1900. Of these data, the relationship of the imports and exports and the relative foreign and domestic prices are shown in Table 1. The conclusions drawn from these figures are listed below. 1. The United States is an exporter of zinc. 2. The United States is an importer of lead. 3. The average price of zinc at St. Louis for the last 32 years has been no higher than on the London market even though zinc and zinc ore have "enjoyed" a protective (?) tariff of varying amounts per pound for 22 years of this period. 4. The average price of lead on the New York market for 32 years has been 1.2c. per pound higher than on the London market, the tariff varying from 0.75 to 1.5c. per pound of lead in ore, and 1 to 2c. or more on manufactured lead.

THE New Jersey Zinc Co.'s vertical retort plants are believed to have been in continuous operation through the whole year. At Palmerton metal purer than that made from the same ore in the old plant has been produced and has been able to compete successfully with very pure electrolytic metal in die castings and other special uses where extreme purity is worth money. A new plant using this process was put in production by the Grasselli Chemical Co. at Meadowbrook, W. Va., early in the summer. It is said to be working very satisfactorily. It is understood that this plant will not produce high-grade metal. Two patents issued to Bunce and Mahler (Nos. 1,749,126 and 1,749,127) describe a method of operating the vertical retort so that practically lead-free metal can be obtained from ores containing consider- able lead. The zinc vapors and other gases leaving the reaction zone are filtered through a column of material maintained at a temperature high enough to prevent much zinc from condensing. The filtering medium is either periodically or continuously changed.

IT IS generally recognized that the natural gas absorbed in petroleum plays the leading r6le in moving the oil through the sands to the well and supplies the energy that delivers the oil to the surface when the wells are flowing. It is the purpose of this paper to note the amount of oil that could be lifted by this gas if 100 per cent. efficiency were obtained and the efficiencies actually obtained in the use of this gas. An article in MINING AND METALLURGY,' stated that in a Wyoming field, with a pressure of 300 lb. per sq. in., there would be absorbed 65 cu. ft. of gas per barrel, or 1.55 cu. ft. per gal. of oil. The writer does not know if data have been obtained, by experiment, for pressures beyond those indicated in this article, therefore, for the purpose of illustration, he has projected this curve to obtain figures for pressures greater than 300 lb., although probably experiment will show that the extended line is not quite correct.

The rate of dissolution of cementite was studied in three low-carbon materials: a zone-refined Fe-C alloy, an Fe-0.5pct Mn-C alloy, and a commercial low-carbon steel. The materials were spheroidized, ad then held isothermally at temperatures above the Al. The isothermal anneal was interrupted periodically by a water quench and the specimens were analyzed by quantitative metallography for the amount of aus-tenite formed during the anneal. The results of this study were compared with an analytical model for the process, which assumes that carbon diffusion in aus-tenite is the rate-controlling step for the cementite dissolution process. The correlation between the model and the experimental data is excellent for the zone-refined Fe-C alloys; however, the Fe-0.5 pct Mn-C alloys and the commercial steel deviate from the calculated model. This deviation is thought to be a result of manganese segregation between the carbide and the matrix. The rate of nucleation of austenite at carbide interfaces was reduced by the manganese addition and enhanced by the presence of ferrite-ferrite grain boundaries. PREVIOUS investigations of the nucleation and growth of austenite from ferrite-carbide aggregates are not entirely satisfying for at least one of several reasons. The most prevalent of these is a lack of quantitative data. Engineering studies have been run on many steels with little control over important parameters such as composition and initial aggregate structure. The data obtained are valid only for material with identical chemistry and thermal history. A more informative approach to the problem of aus-tenitization would be to determine the mechanism that controls the rate of solution of carbide in austenite and how it is modified by alloying elements. This information could then be used to calculate an austeniti-zation rate for any material, provided its composition and structure are known. The object of the present work is to establish the rate-controlling step for cementite dissolution in Fe-C austenite and to investigate the modification of this rate by small manganese additions. The composition and structure of the material used were carefully controlled and all measurements were designed to allow a quantitative analysis of the kinetic process that controls the austenitization rate. A MODEL FOR DISSOLUTION OF CEMENTITE Cementite dissolution has been analyzed mathematically by a model that approximates the material used in the experiments. This model postulates a regular ar-array of identical cementite spheroids with 4 C( diam, embedded in a grain boundary- free ferrite matrix. The analysis provides a detailed description of the dissolution of one carbide spheroid and a generalization of the solution by summation over all the carbides in the material. The carbides may be isolated by defining identical, space-filling cells of ferrite around them. If the cell dimensions are greater than the diameter of the austenite sphere resulting from complete dissolution of the carbide, and no interaction (through diffusion in ferrite) takes place between cells during the dissolution process, the model need concern only one cell, since the solution in each cell is identical. In the experimental material, the dimensions of the cell, the carbide, and the final austenite sphere are approximately 24, 4, and 8 p, respectively; use of the single cell is therefore justified. The experimental observations are made on the austenite nodules that form around each carbide during the dissolution process. The model concerns the growth of these austenite nodules. The attendant shrinking of the carbide can be obtained from the same analysis by an extension of the calculations. Several a priori assumptions are necessary to make the analysis of the growth problem tractable. They are: 1) carbon diffusion through the austenite nodule is the rate-controlling process; 2) local equilibrium exists at all interfaces, 3) the austenite nucleus that forms on each carbide instantaneously envelops the carbide; 4) during the austenite growth process, the diffusion flux of carbon in ferrite is insignificant; 5) a quasi-steady state exists in the austenite concentration field; that is, at any instant during the dissolution process, the austenite carbon concentration gradient closely approximates that for a steady-state solution; and 6) the effects of capillarity on the dissolution rate of the carbides can be neglected. Referring to Fig. 1, a mass balance at the y-a interface for an infinitesimal boundary movement gives: Where rb is the outer radius of the austenite shell, C1 and C are carbon concentrations at the interface in austenite and ferrite, respectively, see Fig. 2, is the diffusion coefficient of carbon in austenite for the concentration of carbon at the interface, and t is time. The fifth assumption permits the austenite carbon concentration to be approximated by the Laplace solution for the spherical case. Therefore, where C(Y) is the carbon concentration at r, and A and B are constants. Local interfacial equilibrium fixes the boundary conditions for the diffusion problem. They are:

QUARTZ of a certain kind, is one of our strategic minerals, and Brazil is probably the one important available source. Crystals of quartz of suitable size and perfection for piezoelectrical application are rare; their most outstanding use is in radio work. Clear quartz, or "crystal," free from twinning, cracks, foreign particles of other disturbing lines of growth, and gaseous or liquid inclusions, is cut into plates which provide excellent control of frequency in broadcasting. The squares or rectangles are less than a millimeter in thickness and ordinarily on the order of 1 in. along each side. They are cut at definite angles with respect to the axes of the crystal, and ground with opposite surfaces parallel. Each small slab must be a section of one crystal, uniform throughout in atomic alignment. The thickness of the chip controls the frequency of a broadcast and it is most important to have the plates oriented and ground with utmost precision. Opposite surfaces are parallel to within 0.001 mm. and expansion or contraction due to the temperature is limited to one part in a million.

THE final casting of refined copper has been re-J- stricted for generations by the following sequence of operations: Filling the reverberatory furnace, melting, skimming, blowing or flapping, and poling. The hoped-for 24 hr cycle, producing 300 tons or more, has been taken up largely with the necessary bat time-consuming tasks of cleaning the bath, sulphur elimination, and in turn removal of excess oxygen to produce tough-pitch copper. Incidental to comparatively slow melting under combustion gases, copper oxides react with the furnace lining, and the slag so-formed must be completely recycled. The three-phase arc furnace has eliminated some of the cycle stages, and telescoped the remainder into a continuous operation. Electrical energy, supplied to graphite electrodes enclosed in high grade refractories, rapidly melts copper cathodes and sustains a stream of metal, containing approximately 0.01 pct oxygen, without contamination from fuel. The arc was struck on the first large electric furnace for melting copper in the United States on April 13, 1949. The earliest use of this type of furnace was at Copper Cliff, Ont., in 1936, and an admirable description of their installation has been published? Copper, melted in the Baltimore furnace, is used to cast billets, and the installation differs somewhat from the Canadian, as will be described. The arc furnace is a heavy-duty, three-phase furnace, holding 50 tons, the general outline of which appears on Fig. 1. The steel shell is 15 ft ID with a bottom radius of 14 ft 2 in. The roof, separate and distinct from the body, consists of a 15-ft water-cooled, cast-steel ring of the same outside diameter as the furnace. The center line of the furnace lies 9 ft 6 in. from that of the trunnions, permitting a 5" backward tilt for skimming, and a 40" maximum nose tilt forward for complete draining. Normally, the furnace overflows by displacement, and the use of the forward tilt arrangement is restricted to covering charging delays. The charging slot, 3 ft 8 in. x 5 in., lies on the north center line, the tap hole on the south, and the 30x30 in. skim door 45" to the west of the slot. The original 20-in. graphite electrodes were replaced with 14 in. in December 1949. Three conventional direct current winch drives, governed by electrical controls, position each electrode which has individual mast supports and counterweights. An independent circulation supplies cooling water for the electrode glands, the roof ring, charge slot, and the skim door frame. Arc Furnace Refractories Hearth: Fused-in monolithic bottoms had been used in copper arc furnaces, installed prior to April 1949. These consisted of thin layers of periclase, successively fused in place over preliminary brick courses. Heat was obtained from the arc, using a T-like arrangement of broken electrodes resting directly on the periclase to be fused. The operation, taking weeks to perform, was very expensive. The chemically-bonded magnesite-brick bottom, installed at Baltimore, was the first of its kind and a radical departure from previous practice. It consists of a 1 to 6-in. layer of castable refractory laid on the steel shell, modifying it to a 12 ft 2 in. bottom radius. Two courses of 9x2 % -in. fireclay straights and keys follow. The third course is made of 9-in. magnesite blocks of special shape to form circles of an inverted arch. It was started by a four piece keystone with skew-backs forming the outer course. The fourth course also started on a central keystone, or button, of four 90" segments, 12 in. diam x 13 Vz in. deep, and continued with 13%-in. blocks. Skewbacks at the shell completed the course to produce a horizontal surface for the side walls with a single course of No. 2 arch fireclay against the steel. Dry chrome-magnesite cement was brushed over each course after laying, and a 1-in. expansion space between the brick and the shell was filled with the same mixture. The total bottom thickness, excluding the castable material, was 5 in. of clay plus 22% in. of chemically-bonded magnesite. Tap Hole: A 5-in. OD and 3-in. ID silicon-carbide tube constitutes the tap hole and is set tangential to the upper course of the furnace bottom. Molten metal fills the tube when the furnace is level and filled to capacity. Side Walls: The lining, against the shell, consists of a 9x4Y2x3 in. soldier course of fireclay, using straights and No. 1 arches to turn the circles. A second soldier course of 9x4'/2x2'/2-in. fireclay was laid in a somewhat similar fashion. Three courses of 13Y2x6x3 in. and 9x6~3 in. of final magnesite, laid flat, completed the lining, using Nos. 1 and 2 keys to turn the circles. Cardboard spacers were placed between every two bricks in horizontal courses, and a thin coat of chrome-magnesite cement filled the joints between the firebrick and magnesite. A sprung-arch spanned the skim door with jambs of suitable magnesite shapes. Charge Slot: The slot is 3 ft 8 in. wide x 5 in. high. A silicon-carbide sill of special shapes has a 30" slope to allow cathodes to slide easily into the bath. The original arch was flat, and composed of Nos. 1 and 2 wedge magnesite with a 6-ft radius. It projected 5 in. over the sill, and, being a flat arch, gave an 18 15/16-in. opening between the inner edge and the metal line. The whole assembly was later raised 9 in., and the flat arch replaced with an arch, the lower edge of which maintained the 5-in, width from the outer to inner edges as shown in Fig. 2. A water-cooled, cast-copper jacket protects the steel shell behind the slot.

"When l hear - I normally remember 10 percent When I hear and see - I can remember 15 to 25 percent When I hear, see, and do - I usually remember up to 50 percent" While this is not a truism in relation to each and every individual; on the average, this is the case. If we use this as a premise in training operator and maintenance personnel, then it must be obvious that we can't rely on a mere presentation, even one which includes the needed classroom participation and/or hands on work, to do a thorough job and to make this personnel totally proficient - 100 percent proficient. We have to have some other device some other means to make this a continuing process, a process wherein the people can grow in knowledge while performing their normal duties. We have to feel that the words "normal duties" are the key to the whole program. If you would ask a crusher operator what his duty is, he might say "To run this crusher so that we produce 250 tons per hour of a minus 13mm (minus 1/2 ") product." A maintenance man could say "To fix the unit when there is a problem." Both of these answers are legitimate but, they are only a part of the total picture. In order for each of these individuals to do the best job, he must know not just the specifics about the machine he works with or on - he must know the interrelation of all the machinery in the crushing circuit - how the efficiency of each machine affects the others - why a minor problem on one piece of equipment can generate a major problem for another unit which follows it or precedes it. In short, you cannot separate machine operation and maintenance from the application of the equipment in the crushing circuit - and obtaining this knowledge must be a part of the normal duty of crushing plant personnel. As an example a crusher - any crusher - is designed to crush oversize material. It is not designed to accept feed which is already at or less than the required product size. If sized material goes to the crusher, increase wear results by using the crusher as a chute or the crushing chamber can be clogged up with the fines. This latter point is particularly true with cone crushers, especially in the third (Short Head) stage of crushing. When a Gyradisc is used (fourth stage crushing) it is even more critical that the product be removed before the material goes to the crusher. The crusher cannot control this - the screen ahead of the crusher does. The screen must be of adequate size and be functioning properly to allow the crusher to work at optimum. Screening is both an art and a science. Since there are so many variables which affect the output of the screen, it is always best to have a screen which is larger than the sizing calculations dictate. The screens are the most important elements in the circuit. Without screens, specification materials cannot be made and the size of the screen will ultimately aid or hinder your ability to get the most production possible out of the plant. There is a formula available from all screen manufacturers which is designed to calculate the proper screen size. It takes into consideration the

Deformation substructures of' polycrystalline tungsten, W-2, 9, and 24 pct Re, and W-3 pct Ta were studied by tra?zsrnission electron microscopy. The stress-strain curve for unalloyed tungsten showed gradual yielding followed by work-hardening. Electron nzicrographs indicated a gradual increase in dislocation density with increase in strain up to 5.0 pct. Dislocations, although frequently jogged, were straight over moderate distances and were in a randorn array. Stress-strain curves for alloy specimens of W-2 and 9 pct Re and W-3 pct Ta exhibited a drop in stress at yielding followed by only slight work-hardening. Electron micrographs of these specimens after strains of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 pct revealed no change in dislocation substructure from the unstrained specimens. After 2.0 pct strain, the three alloys exhibited dense networks. W-3 pct Ta was characterized by straight, frequently jogged dislocations comparable with the dislocation structure in unalloyed tungsten after a similar amount of strain. In contrast, W-2 pct Re exhibited dislocations that contained widely spaced jogs, while W-9 pct Re had developed a cell structure after the relatively srnall strain of 2.0 pct. The W-24 pct Re alloy contained a few dislocations after 0.1 pct strain, while after 0.5 pct strain twins were evident. Dislocation slip bands apparently preceded the twins. The stress-strain curve for the alloy indicated that twinning commenced after approximately 0.25 pet strain. These results indicate that the primary effect of low rhenium concentrations (2 and 9 pct) in tungsten is to increase dislocation multiplication after macroyielding by reducing the Peierls-Nabarro force (lattice resistance to dislocation motion). The dislocation bands that precede twins in W-24 pct Re may be caused by localized internal stresses resulting fro a metastable structure, for example, clustering of rhenium atoms. The effect of high rhenium additions (22 a 65 pet* Rproperties of tungsten. Klopp, Witzke, and Raffo5 reported bend transition temperatures as low as -100°F (200°K) for dilute electron-beam-melted W-Re alloys tested in the worked condition. Recrystalliza-tion increased the bend transition temperature, but alloys with 2 to 4 pct Re were still markedly superior to unalloyed tungsten. Fractographic examinations of tungsten and W- 3 pct Re and W- 5 pct Re alloys by Gilbert 6 revealed that these low rhenium alloys showed a greater tendency toward cleavage failure than did tungsten. Garfinkle 7 showed that rhenium additions, up to 9 pct, to (100) oriented tungsten single crystals increased the proportional limit stress and decreased the flow stress and the rate of work-hardening. In addition, while deformation in unalloyed (100) oriented crystals apparently involved both (110)100) and (112) slip, crystals with rhenium contents of 5 andpct or more deformed primarily by (112) slip. The mechanism by which high and low rhenium additions affect the mechanical properties of tungsten is still not well-established. The present investigation was undertaken to determine by transmission electron microscopy the effects of low rhenium additions, 2 and 9 pct, and a high rhenium addition, 24 pct, on dislocation substructure in the early stages of deformation of polycrystalline electron-beam-melted tungsten. Unalloyed tungsten and a W- 3 pct Ta alloy were included for comparison. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Triple electron-beam-melted tungsten, W-2, 9, and 24 pct Re, and W- pet Ta were used for this investigation. Chemical analyses of the cast ingots are given in Table I. A description of the starting metal powders and melting and fabrication pro-cedures for unalloyed tungsten and the W-Re alloys is reported.5 The W-3 pet Ta alloy was processed in a similar manner. Compression specimens measuring 0.300 in. (7.6 mm) in length by 0.130 in. (3.3 mm) in diam were machined from swaged rods. All alloy specimens were annealed in a vacuum of 8 x 10- 6 Torr (10'2iVper sq m) for 1 hr at 3600°F (2255°K). The recrystallized grain size ranged from 0.06 to 0.08 mm diam for the alloy specimens. Unalloyed tungsten was annealed at 2400° F (1589°K) for 1 hr to produce a recrystallized grain diameter of approximately 0.12 mm. Specimens were electropolished in a 2 pet NaOH solution to a diameter of 0.125 in. (3.18 mm) to remove surface notches resulting from grinding and to improve reproducibility of t data. The ends o the compression specimens were ground flat, parallel to each other, and perpendicular to the longitudinal axes with 4/0 emery paper. Compression Tests. The compressive stress-strain apparatus used for compression tests is described in detail by Stearns and Gotsky.9 Room-temperature compression tests were conducted at a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min (0.25 mm per min).

Planning quarry operations and control of the quality of rock materials at Hudson Cement Co. at East Kingston, N. Y., are special problems because of multiple uses for the stone and the great structural complexity of the rocks. Problems have been largely solved by detailed geologic work. These geologic studies have paid dividends in long and short range planning, in assessment of reserves, in vastly reduced cost of chemical analyses, and in reduced drilling costs. Limestones of the Hudson Valley outcrop along the Hudson River from Albany to Kingston. Old established cement companies are located just south of Catskill and just east and southeast of Hudson, N. Y. The new Atlantic Cement plant is being constructed at Ravena. Hudson Cement located at East Kingston, is a newcomer and is closest to the New York metropolitan area (Plate I).

IN the inevitable conquest of the blast furnace by metallurgical science in the solution of the problem of how to make more and better iron or to burn less coke, or both, it is highly desirable first to find out why the efficiency of the furnace generally is no better than it is. The immediate need would seem to be a theory to account for the existing facts. Explanation for the quantitative results obtained in current practice has been strangely lacking. One reason for this may be found perhaps in the custom of think-ing of efficiency in terms of coke consumption. Before efficiency can be explained there should be a fairly exact knowledge of what it is. A statement of the pounds of coke used per ton of iron made may have value in indicating comparative results in smelting similar ores with similar cokes, but it tells very little of the efficiency of the operation. When the materials are different, one practice burning 1800 lb. may be less efficient than another using 2000 lb. A better measure is the pig and slag per unit of coke. What is needed is a specific description of efficiency as a' definite quantity having an exact meaning. Such description is afforded by expressing efficiencies in terms of the respective proportions of the fuel energy absorbed in and chargeable to the various actions known to be -taking place in the furnace. Concretely, the energy value of a pound of coke having 85 per cent carbon blown with air heated to 1200° F. is about 7650 lb.-cal. (13,770 B.t.u.). And the work done in smelting a pound of average iron from hematite, comprising reduction and melting with production of a half pound of free running slag from an equal weight of limestone,

THE SEAL BEACH oil field is between the Long Beach and Huntington Beach oil fields, south of Los Angeles, and about half the productive area is with-in the city limits of Long Beach. The proved area lies in portions of Sections 2, 3 and 11, T. 5 S., R. 12 W., S. B. B. & M. Seal Beach is 'an additional link in that remarkable chain, of oil fields extending from Newport to Beverly . Hills, filling in one of the few remaining gaps. It differs from other fields along this line of folding in that it is an oil field in an area of tide lands. Ocean-connected sloughs have access to this area, which ac-counts for its extensive mud flats. The surface eleva-tion of the low ground varies from 2 to 5 ft. above sea-level. This condition called for much preliminary work in building roads prior to field development. Roads are constructed with dredges and drag-line scrapers, which excavate mud from alongside the proposed road and pile it up to a grade high enough to be above high tide. The road bed is then surfaced with gravel, or decom-posed granite, which makes it serviceable in all kinds of weather. An immense amount of road material has already been hauled into this field. Well locations are staked in the mud flats, sometimes ahead of road build-ing, and material is dragged to its place on the ground by tractor. It is necessary to drive piling to support derrick foundations. The present practice is to drive 5 piles for each derrick leg, 4 under the rotary table, 2 under the draw-works, 2 under the Samson post and 4 under the pipe rack, a total of 32 piles. This pro-cedure is, of course, varied to suit special conditions, using either more or less piling.

TILNEY, the great expert on the study of the development of the brain of human beings and animals, tells us that the greatest difference between the human brain and the brain of animals is that man alone has shown evidence of being able to predict the future. Just why he throws overboard the busy bee who lays up honey for the winter, the squirrel who gathers nuts, and the humble ant, I do not know. At any rate, it is nice to be assured by an authority that we have this power of prophecy. My own experience with attempting to prophesy the future has convinced me that our only possibility of being good prophets is to be good students of history.

INTRODUCTION From the designer's view, the installation starts with the first definition of the orebody, and progresses through a long and complex development. The design is affected not only by the characteristics of the ore, but by all of the personalities and events of the project during its development. The following discussion attempts to touch on the most important aspects which define the context in which the designer must work in apply the do's and don'ts. That context is the basis of the viewpoint. WHAT CAN GO WRONG The Project Is Going Over Budget This is a common and serious concern to the plant designer. The Project Falls Behind Schedule Another common and disturbing condition with which the plant designer must cope. Some Equipment Fails to Perform This can be due to either faulty equipment or operating deficiencies. It can be the result of a wide variety of causes, but the designer will be an interested party in the search for the cause and the cure. The Plant Isn't Flexible Enough Sometimes a plant will handle some or even most of the ore satisfactorily but is unable to treat another type properly. This can be a significant problem. An example might be a case where low capacity of a cyclone feed pump makes it impossible to accompany an increase in grinding mill throughput with a corresponding increase in dilution water. This could lead to an increase in cyclone feed density, and a loss in product grade or a limit on the plant capacity. Spillage And Cleanup Are Excessive This is one of the most common and annoying defects in metallurgical plants, and one for which the designer can rarely delegate blame. Maintenance Is Excessive Another common complaint in new plants, and also one for which the dedesigner must accept most of the responsibility.

ENACTMENT' of Public Law 290 by the 78th Congress authorized the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to conduct an experimental program to develop the technology for obtaining oil from oil shale. In adopting and later extending this legislation, the Congress recognized the impending necessity of supplementing ground petroleum reserves with synthetic fuels. Under the provisions of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines, among other things, was charged with the responsibility of developing mining techniques, methods, and equipment for mining the oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The oil shales of western Colorado are apparently richer, more accessible, and more amenable to exploitation than elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain region. The site chosen for the Bureau's Experimental mine is about 10 miles west of Rifle in northwestern Colorado. It is within a 1000-sq-mile area from which, it has been estimated, 300 billion barrels of shale oil could be produced from a 500-ft measure near the top of the formation. One hundred billion barrels of this amount could be produced from the Mahogany ledge, a 60 to 100-ft section near the bottom of the 500-ft measure. This ledge is considered to have economic importance at present. The Green River formation was laid down as sediment in the bottom of vast, shallow inland lakes during Eocene time. The deposit is flat-lying, and there are no faults, fissures, or local rolls. Oil shale is actually a strong, tough magnesium marlstone, which will stand unsupported over relatively wide spans. These and other natural physical characteristics favor mechanized, low-cost mining, which is essential for establishment of an oil-shale industry. It was realized from the outset that an extensive research program would be necessary to develop mining methods, equipment, and techniques for a mechanized, low-cost operation. The program was designed to include research. into all the productive phases of mining, such as drilling, blasting, loading, transportation, and maintenance of the mine structure. The methods, equipment, and techniques developed as a result of this research have established a production of 116 tons per man-shift total labor at a direct cost of $0,292 per ton. Another important phase of the research program that has received little publicity because of its theoretical nature is study of the roofstone behavior and determination of mine structure stresses. This paper purposes to discuss this phase of the research program. Preliminary studies of the physical properties of the Green River oil-shale formation were made in the Barodyramics Laboratory at Columbia University during the latter part of 1945 and the early part of 1946.* The purpose of these studies was to determine the maximum size of unsupported underground openings that would be commensurate with safety and still permit the use of large, efficient mining equipment. Also to be determined were the pillar support to extraction ratio and the shape, size, and spacing of supporting pillars. Selected samples of possible roofstones near the top of the Mahogany ledge, as well as representative samples of different rock types found within the ledge, were obtained from the Bureau's oil-shale mine for these studies. The maximum safe unsupported roof span calculated from this work was 200 ft. Using a safety factor of four, it was theoretically determined that openings 60 ft wide could be advanced under a roofstone at the top of the Mahogany ledge. To support the overburden, 60-ft-sq pillars would be left in a checkerboard pattern. From visual observations made of core samples through the selected roofstone at the oil-shale mine, it was determined that the roofstone was actually a plate 6 to 8 ft thick. Because the calculations were theoretical and allowance had to be made for unknown cracks and fractures in the formation, openings 50 ft wide and pillars 60 ft sq were originally contemplated in the Bureau's Experimental mine. This would be the minimum allowable width that would permit use of large underground mining equipment. For lower mining costs and greater efficiency larger openings were desirable. Different but analogous approaches were made to the problem at the Bureau of Mines Applied Physics

BECAUSE of the impetus given to placer mining since the price of gold was advanced to $35, several types of small dredges have made their appearance, especially in the Lincoln and Oroville areas of California. Some of these are known as "doodle bugs," and have been given considerable publicity, though many believe their performance has been overrated and that complete costs of construction and operation, if known would not put them in so favorable a light. Fig. 1 is a doodle bug owned by E. M. Clark and operated near Lincoln, Calif. It is understood that it was abandoned because of inability to handle deep ground. A similar machine that has been operated-profitably by Comstock Placers is shown in Fig. 2.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IN the copper-mining district of northern Michigan a fair-sized mine usually operates two or more shafts along the strike of the lode, these shafts being usually at least 1,000 ft. apart. The tonnage to be hoisted from each shaft is large-from 13,000 to 25,000 tons per month. The hoisting-engines used are generally steam-driven, non-condensing, duplex engines with Corliss valves, supplied by steam from separate boiler-plants where the distance between shafts is great. In an attempt to centralize power-plants and secure central-station economies, the Winona Copper Co. installed an electric hoist of the Ilgner type, with Ward Leonard control. A brief description of this plant has already been published.1 The only point of variation from the simple Ilgner set lies in the connection of two generators to a single induction-motor by flexible couplings. These generators serve motors which operate hoisting-drums at separate shafts, viz., No. 4 shaft, Winona, and No. 1 shaft, King Philip. , The hoist for No. 4 shaft, is about 1,700 ft. from the power-plant, and in this building the motor-generator set is placed. No. 1 King Philip hoist is 1,500 ft. from the motor-generator set. The equipment of the motor-generator set is as follows: In the middle of the set is a 12-pole, 450-h-p., 600-rev. per min., 2,080-volt, three-phase, 60-cycle, variable-speed induction-motor, connected on each side to a 20-ton fly-wheel which is 10 ft. in diameter, and to a 6-pole, 170-kw, 575-volt, interpole, direct-current generator. On each side of the shaft is placed a separate exciter, which delivers current at 125 volts.
