DEEPEST hole in the earth, and deepest producing oil well in the world-such is well No. K.C.L. A-2, of the Continental. Oil Co., completed on April 12 in the San Joaquin valley about four miles west of Wasco, Calif. It penetrated the earth's crust to a depth of 15,004 ft.- almost three miles-a depth that exceeds by over 2200 ft. that of the previous record holder in western Texas. It is now producing oil from sands at a depth from 13,092 to 13,- 175 ft., which is about 1500 ft. deeper than the record formerly achieved in Louisiana. Continental's new well was bottomed in what is possibly Domengine-Avenal Eocene sand, and is producing from the Middle Miocene equivalent to the Rio Bravo sand.

IN the opencut iron mines of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, the trend in mining is in the development of mining equipment and mining methods which will move surface overburden and ore-bearing materials with less labor and at a cheaper cost. This is a must for most of the independent operators. Their reserves of direct-shipping ore are extremely small and their operations are being conducted in small, or intermediate pits, with a high stripping ratio in the outer fringes, or shore lines of older pits. and in ore bodies passing from direct shipping to the washing and the intermediate, or retreat ore state. The trend is toward deeper stripping, longer and steeper hauls, and the necessity of moving a total of from three to five or six tons of overburden and ore material for each ton of shipping-grade ore produced. This naturally calls for greater production, with larger shovels, or draglines. cheaper drilling and blasting costs through the drilling of larger-diameter blastholes, and cheaper haulage through the use of trucks of larger capacity and more extensive use of belt-conveyor systems. This trend is notable both in stripping and mining.

While running certain float-and-sink tests, unit coal calorific values were determined for gravity fractions of a series of Illinois coals from several districts in the southern part of the state. When these values were plotted against specific gravity what appear to be characteristic curves of somewhat different shape were obtained for each district represented. This in itself seems noteworthy. The shape of the curves seems to indicate that the lightest fraction of the coal, which inspection shows to be largely vitrain, suffers the least deterioration in storage. It was also observed that on dilution curves established with dry ash and B.t.u. values the fractions of 1.35, 1.40 and 1.50 sp. gr., which constitute the greater weight per cent of a given coal sample, fall more frequently on a straight dilution line than do the lighter or heavier fractions of the same sample. In most instances there is a marked steepening between the 1.35 and the fraction of lighter gravity. In general the curve increases in steepness between the fractions of 1.50 and 1.70 specific gravity. The variations in the unit coal-specific gravity curves as well as those observed in dilution curves which appear to be pertinent to this problem are: (I) variation in coal substance with change in specific gravity, (2) variation in kind and quantity of mineral matter with the specific gravity of the fraction, (3) factors of analytical procedure which tend to introduce error in analysis, particularly in high-ash and high-sulfur fractions. At the last meeting of the Institute, several contributions were made to the subject of miners' aid funds. Such matters will always form important factors in the administration of large industrial enterprises. From the frequently remote and isolated position of mining properties, it is a subject that often forces itself upon the attention of the mining engineer. Local conditions are usually so variable that no single method can be found equally well adapted to all localities. At the same time, a study of different types is often suggestive and valuable, and it is with this in view that these notes are presented. The Miners' Fund of New Almaden is a remarkably successful example of what may be done for miners by a wise and at the same time firm management, by simply directing their own efforts and without incurring any great expense to the stockholders,—a practical consideration not without importance in most cases. GRAIN boundary sliding plays a part in the high-temperature deformation of polycrystalline solids, and many investigations1-11 have been carried out to determine the deformation contributed by this mechanism. The principal method employed has been to measure one of the components of the grain boundary displacement, see Fig. 1, at a large number of boundaries, and from the mean value so obtained to calculate the elongation contributed by sliding. A formula connecting these mean values and the elongation contributed is evidently required, and many have been derived. They are usually of the form where Egh is the tensile elongation contributed by sliding, is the mean value of the component, x, N is the mean number of grain boundaries intersecting a line of unit length, and K is a dimensionless parameter known as the averaging factor. Table I summarizes the equations used by various investigators. Examination of these shows that their derivations usually involve doubtful assumptions, and are often in serious error. The purpose of this note is to point out that rigorous solutions to the problem of calculating Egb from x have been available in the literature for some years.' Since this is so little known, and also the original derivations do not make some important points clear, it is proposed to rederive the basic equations. These will be extended further, and the conditions in which the extended equations may be applied will be indicated. The mean values of the components of the sliding vector (I, d, and I:, Fig. 1) will depend on the method by which boundaries are sampled in order to make measurements.3,11 Boundaries are usually sampled by marker lines parallel to the stress axis, or lines perpendicular to the stress axis, the measurement being made at the point where the marker line intercepts the boundary. We will denote the mean values determined by these various sampling methods as follows. lT, dT and vT are mean values obtained by making measurements at pointswhere a transverse line intercepts the boundary while lL, dL, and vl, are the mean values from a longitudinal line. The number of boundaries per unit length also may depend on the direction of measurement, and so we define NT and Nl to be the number of boundaries per unit length, after creep, in the transverse and longitudinal directions, respectively.

THOUGH known as the platinum-group metal- the sextuplet, platinum, palladium, iridium. rhodium, osmium, ruthenium, might well be called the American metals or perhaps Pan-American metals, as the ore containing them eras first discovered in South America, and in recent years the largest production has come from North America. The South American alluvial deposits, which also, contain gold, are in active production, as are the alluvial platinum deposits of Alaska, but the main production is from the copper-nickel ores of Sudbury, Ontario. The Russian deposits in the Urals were the source of most of the worlds platinum for about 100 years, but since 1934 have assumed second place. For a time considerable amounts of platinum came from several rather rich deposits in South Africa but these were exhausted quickly. However, a tremendous reserve of lower-grade ore exists there, which could be worked profitably if the price of platinum were considerably higher.

DUE to wartime secrecy restrictions a large part of the technical information developed by government and industrial laboratories was withheld from distribution. Much of this information has now been released or "declassified" and reports of technical work carried out during the war in allied and enemy countries are also becoming available. Information on the latter subject has been augmented by the work of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Corps of the U. S. Army. Through the Joint Chiefs of Staff, rep¬resentatives of this Corps co-operated with the British Combined Intelligence Observations Subcommittee, and some of the observations were made by combined personnel of both groups. The U. S. Government has undertaken the indexing and abstracting of all of this information in the Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, a weekly bulletin which appeared first early in 1946. Other publications, such as the Bulletin of the British Iron and Steel Institute and The Metals Review of the American Society for Metals, provide abstracts of domestic and foreign magazine articles and papers presented to technical societies. However, they do not cover the industrial and government reports recently released by the Government nor the reports of the Army investigators hence the new bibliography is a welcome addition to our metallurgical library.

Shoemaker: We've all heard a lot about epoxy liner backings. This brings up the question-do zinc furnaces still have a place in a new plant? Meaders: I would, you must understand, be prejudiced in this question because we introduced epoxy backing into the industry. Naturally, we wouldn't have done so if we didn't think it should be done. With that background maybe I could give a little more information on this particular subject than some of the others, because we now have been in this business for some three or four years.

The proportional limit of iron crystals in torsion is governed by the resolved shear stress in the most highly stressed slip systems, averaged around the specimen circumference, and does not obey a critical resolved shear stress law. Crystals of most orientations exhibit a stage of easy plastic deformation, akin to easy glide in tensile or shear specimens. Transient deformation, similar to that which occurs in single crystals of other materials, is also observed. THE torsional deformation of single crystals of magnesium (hcp) and aluminum (fcc) has been described recently by Choi et al.,&apos; especially with respect to the criterion for the orientation dependence of the onset of plastic flow in these materials. The purpose of this paper is to present results of torsion tests of iron single crystals and thus to extend this yield criterion to a bcc metal. In addition to considering the variation of proportional limit with crystal orientation, this paper also briefly treats work hardening, transient deformation, and the mechanism of plastic flow in iron. The effects of the method of surface polishing and the chemical purity of the iron have been investigated. STRESS DISTRIBUTION It is convenient to express the stress at any point of a cylindrical crystal stressed in torsion in terms of t0, which is the shear stress acting at the surface on a plane normal to the axis of the cylinder and in a direction tangential to the cylinder. This stress is given by To = 2T/pr3 [1] where T is the applied torque and r the specimen radius. The shear stress t, resolved in any chosen slip system is given in terms of 7, by1 Ts/TO = sin 0, cos d sin (0, -) + cos , sin d sin d - ) [2] where 0 and d are the angles between the specimen axis and the slip plane normal and slip direction, respectively; h is the angular circumferential position on the specimen at which t, is being determined, measured from an arbitrary reference plane which includes the axis;o and d are the angular coordinates of the projections of the slip plane normal and slip direction on a transverse section with respect to this same reference plane. Slip in iron occurs in a <1ll> direction on the {ll0}, (1121, and (123) planes, which together comprise 48 slip systems. A complete evaluation of the stress distribution in an iron crystal stressed in torsion would therefore require a calculation of Ts/T0 as a function of for 48 different slip systems. Fortunately Gough,&apos;who studied the behavior of iron crystals in alternating torsion, was able to simplify this problem considerably. He showed that it was sufficient to consider a kind of average slip plane for each slip direction, namely the mathematical plane of maximum resolved shear stress containing the slip direction considered. This simplifying approximation is possible because, for each slip direction, the active slip plane or planes lie very near this mathematical plane of maximum shear stress. Vogel and rick&apos; have critically reviewed the early work of Taylor and Elam,13 Taylor,14 and Fahrenhorst and schmid8 from which the identification of the above crystallographic planes as slip planes in the bcc lattice largely stems. While their criticism is clearly justified, their own results do little to clarify the issue. The role of cross slip (screw dislocations changing glide planes) is evidently so important in this case, as Read3 has suggested, that methods for deducing slip systems from observations of gross slip traces are inadequate, such traces commonly arising from complex dislocation motion. Thus the treatment given here involving the plane of maximum resolved shear stress seems a logical simplification especially in view of Gough&apos;s2 study of a iron. There is, however, an assumption built into the subsequent treatment the comparative validity of which is difficult to assess, namely, that slip in all slip systems in iron may be characterized by a common critical resolved shear stress. The shear stress 7, resolved in a slip direction defined by d andd, and on the plane of maximum shear stress containing this direction, is found by first maximizing 7s/70 with respect to either Oo or 4,. ON Thursday, Oct. 9, oil men from far and wide gathered at Beaumont, Texas to participate in a three-day celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the completion of the famous Lucas gusher well at Spindletop field just south of Beaumont, and to pay tribute to Anthony F. Lucas, for whom the Lucas Medal of the A.I.M.E. is named. In the afternoon the gathered host drove to the site of the discovery well to dedicate a 58-ft. granite monu¬ment erected on the spot where the original derrick stood. Representatives of the A.I.M.E. took a prominent part in the dedication ceremonies, giving the two principal addresses of the afternoon&apos;s program. Everette DeGolyer, past President, paid a personal tribute to Capt. Lucas, as a pioneer producer, an engineer, and a friend and well wisher of all young engineers. He gave a splendid picture of the useful and full life of Capt. Lucas who always took a great interest in the activities of the Petroleum Division of the Institute, from its inception to the time of his death.

The object of this paper is to clarify the idea, so important when exploring by potential methods, of the depth of investigation attainable by electrical measurements. After defining, with some precision, .the term "depth of investigation&apos;&apos; in geophysics, the authors show how it is possible to regulate this depth in potential methods and to obtain an &apos;electrical drilling" from surface observations. They consider also the difficulties encountered in deep measurements and indicate how it is possible to reach greater depths than those having an industrial interest. Depth of Investigation The term, depth of investigation, in its general sense, is easily understood. For instance, a driller who can pull cores from a depth of 2000 m. is capable of working, with accuracy, to that depth. By means of a properly placed drill, he may locate an orebody at a depth of 1999 m., however small this orebody may be. On the contrary, the term as used in geophysics requires precise elaboration. As a matter of fact, no geophysical method, irrespective of the physical property studied (density, magnetic permeability, conductivity), can discover a very small body at a great depth because, in practice, the physical parameter upon which such a geophysical method is based is never regular enough, throughout the ground, to distinguish the feeble anomaly caused by the small, deep-lying body from the numerous anomalies due to irregularities of the encasing terrains. Aside from this question of the ratio between the size of the body being hunted for and its depth of burial, a second factor plays its role in the possible depth of investigation; that is the difference, for the parameter under consideration, between the body and its surrounding material. The greater this difference, and the more homogeneous the encasing terrains, the greater is the possible depth of investigation. This being generally established for all geophysical methods, it is possible to distinguish two main classes of these methods, from this same point of view

IN spite of the fact that in 1944 Canada experienced a decline in production of all her leading base metals-nickel, zinc, lead, and copper; despite uncured headaches in the coal-mining industry; and cheerfully ignoring a still further drop in gold, the most valuable product of her mines, which had the lowest output of any year since 1931, the Canadian miner retains the traditional optimism of miners everywhere as he looks forward to the postwar period. Some factors should keep the Canadian mining industry from being too optimistic of the coming era of peace, but the fraternity generally holds that its confident attitude towards the future is based on sound reasons. The decline in production in the Canadian mining industry last year can be almost wholly attributed to the serious shortage of labor and the difficulty in obtaining transport and supplies in remote areas. Some falling off occurred in the demand for certain strategic metals, but the diversion of gold miners, especially, without replacements being obtainable, to direct war work or allied pursuits, was certainly the principal cause of the reduced output in 1944. But that is a situation which will right itself at the close of the conflict.

THERE have already been so many subjects of a purely mechanical nature presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers, that it is unnecessary for me to apologize for adding another to the list. When a new invention, or what is supposed to be a new invention, claiming simply an improvement on the well-known devices, is to be described, it is usual to point out the defects of the old and give a history of the object or the art up to date. But, as no doubt a large proportion of the members of this Institute know as much, or more, about the history and use of the steam-engine indicator than I do myself, I will not further preface the subject, than to remind you that what called for the Richards&apos;s improvement on the Watt&apos;s indicator was high speed ; that the leading improvement was the reduction of momentum in the reciprocating parts; and that this was accomplished by making the parts lighter, and reducing the travel of the heaviest of them, and consequently the speed and momentum. The use of the indicator has been extended, for the speed of steam-engines and other prime movers has been increased, until one engineer at least, John Cooper, of Philadelphia, says, "I want an indicator that will work up to a thousand revolutions." Mr. Thompson, of the Buckeye Steam-Engine Company, of Salem, Ohio, has improved on the Richards&apos;s indicator by another reduction in the momentum, which is done by putting the parallel motion nearer the fulcrum of the pencil arm, reducing both weight and travel. The characteristic feature of the indicator I am going to illustrate is a still further reduction in the same direction, which is accomplished by dispensing with the parallel motion altogether. Before the arrival of central-station power, all coal and metal mines generated their own power and, in many cases, these isolated power plants gave a fair continuity of service. In coal mines that produce considerable gas, it is essential that power be available at all times for operating the ventilating fan and the hoist, if the mine is of the shaft type. In the case of an isolated power plant, if trouble should develop with the fan the men can be hoisted quickly when the mine is of the shaft type. On the other hand, if trouble develops with the hoist, the fan can be kept in operation, and there will be no necessity of haste in getting the men from the mine. Now that central-station power is being used so extensively for mine service, the continuity of service with gaseous mines is very important. : Inherently, the central station is much more reliable than any isolated plant, but trouble may occur on the transmission lines which may prevent the transmission of power for a considerable time. : Some mines have kept their steam equipment intact and ready for operation in case the purchased power should fail. This is expensive procedure, for the boiler plant must be fired at all times so that the emergency power will be quickly available. In a number of instances, gasoline-engine driven generators have been installed to furnish emergency power for the service hoist. As most service hoists are of the alternating-current type, the generator of the gasoline-engine driven set is usually of the a.c. type and is arranged to drive the service hoist motor at full speed, or an extra motor that can be thrown into gear on either the main or service hoist and the hoist operated at a greatly reduced speed. This arrangement is used because it is difficult and expensive to obtain and install large gasoline-engine driven units. The author has recently developed a plan by which the main hoist and the fan can both be operated at reduced speeds, in case of loss of power from a central-station power system. On January 1, 1948, we boarded the cage at 7 a.m. and were dropped to the 900 level of the Brunswick shaft. The previous evening, we had attended the New Year&apos;s party at the Miners&apos; Guild Hall and as this soireée had not disbanded until the small hours of the morning, we had only had about two to three hours sleep. At the 900 level station, we fell in beside our mining partner, a Cousin Jack, who was known by all as Porky. Porky didn&apos;t say anything as we plodded down the drift, we didn&apos;t say anything either-in fact there was little conversation by anybody.

IN ONTARIO development of the gold mines is being rapidly pushed, while the intensity of the search for new mines has probably not been equaled at any time in the past. Even to outline the results of recent prospecting activity in Ontario would be a big undertaking, but it would be timely and, I hope, interesting to Institute members to review some generalities regarding the work of the prospector and then to discuss in some detail the growth of Ontario&apos;s most promising prospect area, the Swayze district, where serious mining operations are already under way. Probably no one writing about prospectors and pros¬pecting can resist hoping that his article will not reach the eyes of a certain portion of the uninformed general public and cause a further influx of "prospective prospectors" into any given area.
