The conditions of temperature, strain rate, and total strain favoring deformation by grain boundary sliding, slip, or deformation with concurrent recrystallization were evaluated for alpha plutonium. Grain boundary sliding and slip were studied by examining structures formed on polished surfaces with 4.5 pct compressive deformation. The conditions required for recrystallization were determined from compressive deformation us time curves. At 110" C and at a strain rate of 10&apos;per min, deformation was almost exclusively by grain boundary sliding whereas slip was the predominant deformation mode at -10°C and lo-&apos; per min. Defarmation at intermediate tenzperatures and strain rates produced structures showing mixtures of grain boundary sliding and slip. Recrystallization occurred concurrently with deformation only after a critical strain was reached. About 14, 6, and 3 pct strain was required at 105", llO°, and lZO°C, respectively, before recrystallization started, irrespective of the strain rate in the range of lo-&apos;1 to 10&apos;4 per nzin. L HE temperature and strain-rate dependency of the modes of plastic deformation were evaluated for high-purity as-cast alpha plutonium. The techniques used to study slip and grain boundary sliding were similar to those employed previously for alpha plutonium by Bronisz and Gorum,&apos; and spriet.&apos; Recrystallization was investigated using the methods reported by Nelson.3 Bronisz and Gorum&apos; found that slip occurred on more than one slip system at room temperature, and suggested that grain boundary sliding also contributed to the deformation. spriet2 found that deformation was predominantly by slip at room temperature, and observed one to three orientations of slip traces in individual grains. In addition, he deformed polished samples at 10O° C, but concluded that the deformation character of alpha plutonium at 100° C and at room temperature were not essentially different. Several investigators reported that twinning was only occasionally observed.1&apos;2&apos;4 Nelson3 recently found in creep tests that high-purity alpha plutonium would recrystallize concurrently with compressive deformation at temperatures between 25" and 115°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Electrorefined plutonium having less than 300 ppm total impurities was received from Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in the form of +-in. diarn cast rods. Major impurities were americium, <I00 ppm, and tungsten, (60 ppm. Less than 25 ppm each of other impurities were present. The rods were cut into right half-cylinders 0.35 in. long and 0.25 in. in diam, and the flat faces along the cylinder axes were metal-lographically polished. To avoid loss of the metallo-graphic polish by oxidation, the polished samples were deformed in a silicone fluid heat treating medium contained in a chamber evacuated to a pressure of lo-&apos; torr. Deadweight loading was used to compress the samples between 4.5 and 20 pct at strain rates between 10"4 and lo- &apos; min-&apos;. Strain rates were determined by dividing the total deformation by the elapsed time of the test, even though the strain rate was not constant during deformation. Curves of strain vs time for samples deformed with a constant compressive stress3 show that the strain rate changes by less than a factor of four during the testing of a given sample, which is small compared to the three orders of magnitude change in strain rate investigated. Two samples were loaded into an ordinary metallographic mounting mold and impacted by striking the mold piston with one blow of a 2-lb hammer. Deformation temperatures for the two impact samples were 25" and 90°C. The samples, following deformation, were washed in carbon tetrachloride and their polished and deformed surfaces were immediately inspected metallographi-cally. Subsequently, the deformation structures were replicated with acetate replicating tape for later electron microscope examination, and the samples were then repolished and etched to reveal the microstruc-tures of the deformed metal. Second-stage carbon replicas were prepared from decontaminated acetate replicas using the procedure developed by Miller, Bierlein, and astel.&apos; Additional samples, which were 0.35 in. long by 0.25 in. in diam, were used to obtain constant load deformation vs time curves. These samples were deformed 10 to 20 pct with loads of 15 and 20,000 psi at 120°C; 30, 45, and 55,000 psi at 110°C; and 20 and 30,000 psi at 105°C. Samples were polished and etched to determine whether or not recrystallization or twinning had occurred during deformation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The experiments showed that alpha plutonium deforms by grain boundary sliding, slip, and deformation with concurrent recrystallization. Deformation by twinning was insignificant. Metallographic examination of polished and deformed surfaces revealed grain boundary sliding and slip. The start of recrystallization was ascertained from constant load deformation vs time curves. Deformed surface structures of samples compressed 4.5 pct under four different conditions of temperature and strain rate, Fig. 1, show how the deformation mode changes from predominantly grain boundary sliding to predominantly slip with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. Deformation at 110°C and 10" 4 min-&apos;, Fig. l(a), was predominantly by grain boundary sliding. Only a few slip traces can be seen in Fig. l(a).

I DESIRE to present this evening a few notes from the standpoint of a manufacturer upon the subject of tests of iron for structural purposes; not that I have any new facts to which to call your attention, but rather a statement of a few of the objectionable features of the present modes of operation, showing the absolute necessity of important and very radical changes. At the present time, as most of you are well aware, proposals for materials are accompanied by certain specifications as to quality and tests to which the manufactured article must conform. Evolved in many cases from the inner consciousness of some one more expert in theory than in practice, we find a few of the specifications to be good, many bad, and some indifferent. Appended are specimens of specifications of the most prominent engineers and railroad companies, which may be taken as representing the best and most intelligently framed specifications which we now have, arid yet in some pints scarcely satisfactory, owing to misunderstanding of tests as now made. To show the very varied opinions held as to proper quality of iron for bridge-work, I give the tests of two lots of fron made by inspectors with the results, which were referred to the maker with the following commensts : Lot No. 1. This paper describes the analytical characteristics of Western subbituminous coal and the manner in which these characteristics apply to their use in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares these characteristics with those of typical Midwestern coal and Eastern bituminous coal. The paper also reviews in detail the design considerations that must receive attention when various blends of these three coals, or any combinations thereof, are planned to be used. This research paper describes variations in analytical and utilization characteristics when coals from different origins are blended in order to achieve a predetermined sulfur content for the purpose of predicting sulfur oxides emissions as they affect environmental regulations and the resulting alterations in utilization characteristics such blending would cause, and how such blends of coal would affect a utility-sized steam generator.

DURING the closing month of 1929, Walter Douglas found his health impaired by the strain of many difficult years of alternating prosperity and depression, and in April 1930 resigned the presidency of Phelps Dodge. Douglas was succeeded by Louis S. Cates. The choice broke a tradition that had been held inviolate for almost a hundred years. For the first time in its long history, the direction of the company&apos;s policies and operations was entrusted to a stranger without previous Phelps Dodge background, training, experience, or tradition. But the choice was wisely made. For a time at least, the path of Phelps Dodge was to run through rough and dubious ground, and no man in the United States was better qualified to blaze that trail than Louis Cates. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cates had served a rough and financially un- profitable apprenticeship at one of the century-old mining camps of Chihuahua, Mexico. Formerly great divergence of opinion existed in regard to the influence of copper in steel, as affecting its various physical properties. More recently the investigations of Stead,l Breuil,2 Wigham,3 Burgess and Aston: Ball and Wingham,5 Miiller; Dillner,7 and others have shown fairly good agreement in the major points. Copper steel has been shown by these investigators to possess special properties which make it valuable for certain uses. The general range of composition of the useful alloys of copper and iron, and of copper, iron, and carbon, has been quite definitely established, for the former by Burgess and Aston,8 and for the latter by Breuil9 and Stead.10 Stead11 has removed one difficulty in reconciling certain of the earlier data by calling particular attention to the influence &apos;of carbon in copper steels. Another point which caused confusion in the earlier investigations, particularly in regard to " red-shortness," was the presence of sulphur. Failure to note the presence of sulphur often led to attributing " red-shortness" to the presence of small amounts of copper. Turner12 has called attention to the fact that where copper exists in an iron ore it often occurs as the sulphide, so that the presence of copper in steel made from such ores might also, necessarily, mean the presence of sulphur. It is evident that the effect in this case might be quite different than where pure copper was added.

Alaska is a land of immense proportions and resources. Its very name, derived from an Aleut term, means "The Great Land." Yet, in a state slightly larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined, there are presently only two-large scale mines in production, excluding dredge operations. Once referred to by its territorial governor as "a storehouse of minerals," Alaska is, in the opinion of many industry observers, at least 20 years away from a healthy, productive mining industry. The mineral potential of the state is tremendous: coal deposits on the North Slope alone have been hypothetically pegged at 1.5 trillion tons. Copper-zinc deposits on the south flank of the Brooks Range are conservatively estimated to be worth $4 billion to $6 billion. The XCVIIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at Spokane, Wash., beginning Monday, Sept. 27, 1909, as already announced in Special Circulars of May 8 and Aug. 14, 1909, and in the Bulletins for June, July, and August. The meeting will be preceded by a tour through Yellow stone Park and visits to Butte and Anaconda, and will be followed by visits to the Coeur d&apos;Alene district, to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at Seattle, to the mining- and smelting-plants near Salt Lake, and to the iron- and lead- and zinc-plants at Pueblo. The special train for the party&apos; will leave Chicago, September 16, and return about October 12. Details of the itinerary are given later in this announcement. The Secretary of the Spokane Local Committee is Lyndon K. Armstrong, 615 Hyde Block, Spokane, Wash., to whom should be addressed all inquiries concerning local matters. The control of the papers and proceedings will remain in charge of the Institute office, as usual. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the many courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the excursion party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. For those who cannot join in the entire trip, it may be possible to provide special Pullman accommodations after leaving Yellowstone Park. THIS review of the past year&apos;s progress in iron and steel metallurgy presents examples of only a few of the interesting or important accomplishments made in the United States. In the field of iron ore concentration increased attention was given to the study of the more difficultly separated wash ores and some progress was made in tabling. One difficulty with the table, in concentrating iron ore where the percentage of concentrate in the feed is large, has been the removal of fine silica from the thick layer .of concentrates in the cleaning zone. One company has -Made an important contribution toward the solution of this problem by an extension of the well-known plateau principle. By a special riffling of the plateau section of the table, the concentrates are crowded together. This action forces the fine silica to the top of the bed in the cleaning zone, whence the cross-flowing currents of water -can wash it into the middling product. Some work has been done on the application of froth flotation to the concentration of iron ores. Laboratory experiments were made at the Colorado School of Mines in which hematite was, successfully floated. Using oleic acid as a frothing and collecting agent and sodium carbonate as the conditioning agent, a high recovery of rich ,concentrate was obtained. A series of specimens of a Cu- 3.23 pct Co alloy were prepared with particle diameters from zero to 590A. The samples were then cold-rolled 95 pct and the effects of the particle size on the behavior on annealing for hr at temperatures between 100" and 900°C were studied (by hardness, light, and electron metallography). Particles, particularly for d r 105 to 590A, greatly impeded softening and vecvystallizn-tion, and tended to give elongated grains. Particles deformed fairly homogeneously with the ,matrix, be- IN a previous study by the author,&apos; the growth of cobalt-rich precipitates was followed electron microscopically in Cu-3.12 Co alloy as a function of aging, typically at 650°C. The coherent spherical precipitates grew to 520 + lOOA average diam before spontaneously losing coherency and developing (111) facets. Stretching a few percent after precipitation 2aused loss of coherency to occur sooner at about 220A average particle diam. The particles apparently retained their fcc structure after loss of coherency. coming lau2ellae. For d = 55 to 180A, these lamellae gave streak-contrast effects apparently due to coherency strains , and spheroidized on annealing at 600" to 650°C, forming coherent particles. Particles of d = 250 ov 320A lost coherency during t-olling, giving incoherent lamellae. Recrystallization apparently occured by growth of new grains into unrecrystallized (recovered) material at temperatures below that at which cobalt atoms had much mobility. The present study was undertaken to explore the effect of cobalt-rjch particles of various average sizes from 50 to 600A diam on the isochronal annealing behavior of copper after heavy cold rolling. The previous work&apos; was used as a guide in preparing the two-phase series of prerolling structures. The solution-treated alloy was also rolled for comparison. A further question of interest in the present study was whether dislocation and particle hardening were additive, since the prerolling structures covered the full range unaged - peak aged — overaged, and further precipitation might occur on annealing after cold rolling. Two years ago the general features of the St. Joseph Lead Company&apos;s zine-smelting process were described.&apos; At that time the discussion was limited to a description of the production of high-purity electrothermic zinc oxide. The present paper will describe the commercial production of electrothermic zinc metal. Since a fairly complete description of the plant of the Josephtowlz smelter was given in the earlier paper, the brief recapitulation given here will be limited to mention of additional equip-ment recently installed and a bare outline of the preparatory process. The raw material is zinc sulphide concentrate received from the company&apos;s mines in St. Lawrence County, New York. An average dry-weight analysis of this material is: Zn, 58.28 per cent; Pb, 0.56; insoluble, 1.6; SiO², 1.12; Fe, 6.4; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.27; S, 31.9; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.06; Mn, 0.24. Moisture content is usually about 3 per cent. Three 21-ft. 6-in. diameter, 12-hearth Nichols-Herreshoff furnaces roast the coacentrate to a calcine of average conlposition (first 10 months of 1938): Zn, 67.69 per cent; Pb, 0.06; insoluble, 1.75; SiO², 1.26; Fe, 7.24; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.36; S, 1.88; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.07&apos;; Mn, 0.27. The sulphur dioxide gas, after passing through a waste-heat boiler, proceeds through a recently redesigned low-resistance gas-purification assembly to the contact sulphuric acid plant, of which the capacity is 200 tons of concentrates per day. The calcine is mixed with a portion of returned furnace residues and sintered on 42-in, by 44-ft. Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines, gas-fired. Wind-box gases pass through air coolers before filtering in a 1440-bag Dracco unit, and thence to stack. The Dracco fume is mixed with Cottrell dust, from roaster gas cleaning, and sent to the leach plant, where it is roasted (SO² to acid plant) and leached with sulphuric acid to recover, as end products, lead sulphate, zinc sulphate and cadmium.

Since a fairly complete description of the plant of the Josephtowlz smelter was given in the earlier paper, the brief recapitulation given here will be limited to mention of additional equip-ment recently installed and a bare outline of the preparatory process. The raw material is zinc sulphide concentrate received from the company&apos;s mines in St. Lawrence County, New York. An average dry-weight analysis of this material is: Zn, 58.28 per cent; Pb, 0.56; insoluble, 1.6; SiO², 1.12; Fe, 6.4; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.27; S, 31.9; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.06; Mn, 0.24. Moisture content is usually about 3 per cent. Three 21-ft. 6-in. diameter, 12-hearth Nichols-Herreshoff furnaces roast the coacentrate to a calcine of average conlposition (first 10 months of 1938): Zn, 67.69 per cent; Pb, 0.06; insoluble, 1.75; SiO², 1.26; Fe, 7.24; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.36; S, 1.88; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.07&apos;; Mn, 0.27. The sulphur dioxide gas, after passing through a waste-heat boiler, proceeds through a recently redesigned low-resistance gas-purification assembly to the contact sulphuric acid plant, of which the capacity is 200 tons of concentrates per day. The calcine is mixed with a portion of returned furnace residues and sintered on 42-in, by 44-ft. Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines, gas-fired. Wind-box gases pass through air coolers before filtering in a 1440-bag Dracco unit, and thence to stack. The Dracco fume is mixed with Cottrell dust, from roaster gas cleaning, and sent to the leach plant, where it is roasted (SO² to acid plant) and leached with sulphuric acid to recover, as end products, lead sulphate, zinc sulphate and cadmium.

The partial molar heat of solution of rhodiunz in liquid lin and Rh-Sn alloys has been measured as a function of rhodium concentration at 700" , 725" , 750" , and 775°K. The values at infinite dilution are very exo thermic, ranging from -29,950 to -28,260 cal per g-atom Rh at 700" and 775"K, respectively. At the solubility limit the heat of solution becomes sharply nzore exothermic and has permitted the liquidus boundary to be accurately established at each temperature. From the measurements in the two-phase region of liquid Plus RhSn, the heat of formation of RhSn,has been determined. A large increase in the heat of formation between 725" and 750°K suggests the possibility of a phase transformation in this compound. V ERY few measurements have been made of the heats of solution of transition metals in liquid tin; yet those values that are available are of great interest because of their very large exothermic nature. For example, the heat of solution at infinite dilution of palladium in tin has been measured as about -26,000 cal per g-atom (625" to 800°~),&apos; while the heat of solution at infinite dilution of platinum is even more exothermic at -28,591 cal per g-atom (914°K).&apos; These values are of the same order of magnitude as the heat of formation of many intermetallic compounds and as such clearly indicate that very strong bonding must exist between the solute and tin atoms in the liquid solutions. Rhodium might be expected to display similar solution characteristics in tin in view of its close electronic resemblance to palladium and platinum. Since no thermodynamic data are available for Rh-Sn alloys, rhodium was chosen as an appropriate solute for further investigation of transition-metal systems with highly exothermic heats of solution at infinite dilution. EXPERIMENTAL The heat of solution of rhodium in dilute Rh-Sn liquid solutions was measured as a functlon of rhodium concentration at 700°, 725", 750°, and 775°K. The liquid-metal solution calorimeter used in this work has been fully described elsewhere. At the start of each series of measurements, the solvent bath consisted of about 0.5 g-atoms of 99.9+ pct pure tin. To this was made a number of small rhodium additions, about 0.0005 g-atoms each, and the heat of solution was measured for each. Rhodium of 99.9+ pct purity in powder form was used in order to promote rapid dissolution in the liquid tin. The powder specimens were contained in tin foil stated to be purified (lead-free). This foil was found to have no measurable heat of solution in pure tin so the effect of any impurities could be neglected. The energy equivalent of the calorimeter was experi- mentally determined by dropping tungsten and/or tin specimens at intervals during each series of rhodium drops. The tungsten and tin used were 99.95 and 99.999+ pct pure, respectively. The only heat effect due to a tungsten drop, or a tin drop at low rhodium concentrations in the bath, is the sensible heat of the specimen. The heat content of these materials is well-established and is presented in the compilation of Hultgren et al. 4 As the rhodium concentration in the tin bath increases a small heat effect arises from the reaction: Sn (liquid, T) — & (soln, T) where T is the temperature of the tin bath. Where necessary, this heat of solution of tin was determined by Gibbs-Duhem integration, and corrections were made to the heat effect of the tin calibration specimens and the tin foil containing the rhodium specimens. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The calculated values of the heat of solution of rhodium in dilute Rh-Sn alloys as a function of composition are shown graphically in Fig. 1. The values have been corrected for the sensible heat of the specimens, initially at 273"K, and apply to the reaction:

AN IMPORTANT innovation in Alabama in the semi-longwall type of coal mining as applied to low-dipping thin seams has been introduced by the Galloway Coal Co., mining the Mary Lee high-ash seam which averages only 26 in. thick. The property is their Mill Creek mine, near Carbon Hill, Ala., in the Warrior coal field. The results, although not final, indicate that roof conditions can be successfully handled by this method without loss of walls, with a rate of recovery much above that possible with the room-and-pillar method, and at the low production cost necessary for this grade of coal. Double cross-headings are turned off a main haulageway on 60-ft. centers and driven 40 ft. wide with thin chain pillars between. These double entries are turned at 525-ft. intervals, leaving a solid block of coal 440 ft. across; that is, from the outside of one pair of headings to the inside of the next pair is 440 ft. The bottom, which consists of hard fireclay, is taken in these entries 8 ft. wide and 4 ft. deep for head room.

The crystal structure of MoNi3 was determined by means of X-ray diffraction. This structure is isotype with that of ovgered TiCu3. The lattice parameters are: a. = 5.064A, bo = 4.224A, co = 4.448A, and zf 0.157. If the orthorhombic distortion (slight relative to the corresponding orthohexagonal unit cell) is disregarded, the structure may be described in terms of a close-packed ordered atomic layer, stacked in the sequence: abab. The structztres of ordered TiCu3 and TiAl3 are homotectic. The three types of ordered hexagonal phases, iso-structural with TiNi3, MgCd3, and VCo3, are known to occur in AB3 alloys of transition elements of the first, second, ad third long periods. It was noted1 that phases with the TiNi3 structure occur selectively in alloys of Ti-group elements with Ni-group elements. In AB3 alloys of Ti-group and V-group elements with Co-group elements the AuCu3-type structure predominates.&apos; The vCO3 structure, which was determined very recently,&apos; has hexagonal symmetry, but the actual atomic arrangement here, too, is rather closely related to the ordered cubic structure of AuCu3-type. However, an ordered hexagonal close-packed structure of the MgCd3-type occurs in MOCO33 and WCO3.4 Consequently, the question arises as to whether or not the crystal structure of MoNi3 is also of the MgCd3-type. Grube and winkler5 found that MoNi3 has a hexagonal close-packed structure with a = 2.54A and c/a = 1.65. They pointed out that some additional weak diffraction lines could be observed in the powder pattern, which may have been due to an ordered atomic arrangement in this phase. However, no detailed information was obtained by them and the structure was apparently not further investigated by others. The present work was, therefore, undertaken in an attempt to determine in detail the structure of MoNi3, and to investigate the possibility of ordering. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Alloys used in the present work were arc-melted in a water-cooled copper crucible under helium atmosphere. Electrolytic nickel and molybdenum, both 99.9 pct pure, were used. Chemical analyses were not made, but the melting loss was not higher than 2 pct for any alloy. Ingots were first homogenized at 1200°C for 48hr, quenched, heavily cold worked, and then annealed at 820" or 860°C for 1 week, followed by quenching in cold water. Powder specimens for X-ray work were prepared by crushing the heat-treated solid specimens. In order to remove strains, the powders were reannealed in evacuated scaled fused silica capsules for 6 hr at the same temperature at which the corresponding solid specimens were annealed. X-ray photographs were taken with an asymmetric focussing camera, using unfiltered CrK or CuK radiation. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys containing 20.8, 25, and 26.4 at. pct Mo, homogenized at 1200°C, showed the face-centered-cubic structure of the Ni-base a-solid solution. It was revealed, however, by micrographic examination that the 26.4 at. pct Mo alloy contained in addition very small amounts of a second phase, in accordance with the phase diagram.6 On the other hand, the 20.8 at. pct Mo alloy after annealing at 820°C gave the X-ray diffraction pattern of the ordered face-centered-tetragonal MONi4.7 In this pattern several additional weak diffraction lines were also observed, corresponding to the strongest diffraction lines of MoNi3. The alloys containing 25 and 26.4 at. pct Mo after annealing at 820" or 860°C gave X-ray diffraction patterns, as shown in Tables I and 11, corresponding to MoNi3. Each one of the reflections which could be tentatively indexed on the hexagonal close-packed cell of Grube and Winkler,5 with the exception of the basal plane reflections, was split into a doublet, as seen in Table I. Since microscopically the alloy consisted of a single phase, it seemed probable that the lattice of MoNi3 is actually slightly deformed, as compared with the tentative hexagonal unit cell. In addition to these diffraction lines, several weak lines were also present, as shown in Table 11, which could not be indexed at all on the hexagonal close-packed cell considered. Satisfactory indexing of all diffraction lines observed was found to be possible by using an orthorhombic unit cell with ao = 5.064A, ft = 4.224A, and c = 4.448A. These values, whose accuracy is estimated to approximately ± 0.008A, correspond to 95.14A3 for the volume of the unit cell, and to an X-ray density of 9.50 g per cm3. If no attention were paid to the weak reflections listed in Table II, a reduced -unit cell of half the volume (a = 2.532A, b = 4.448A, and c = 4.224A), closely related to the orthohexagonal cell, might be used. The dimensions of the orthohexagonal cell of the same volume as the reduced cell are: a = 2.562A, b = 4.437 A, and c = 4.183A. It may be seen that in the reduced cell the a axis is slightly shorter, while the b and c axes are slightly longer than those corresponding to the orthohexagonal cell of the same volume. INTRODUCTION THE purpose of this chapter is to present the diagnostic features (geologic, mineralogic, chemical, and physical) of the principal types of hypogene ore deposits recognized in current genetic classifications, and to classify the ore deposits of the western United States into those types. The genetic divisions used and the criteria determining them are essentially those followed by Lindgren in his Mineral Deposits. Deviations from Lindgren represent either changed conceptions since 1928 (the date of the third edition of Mineral Deposits) due to advance in knowledge or the inevitable differences of opinion between experts in active fields of investigation. Though nineteen economic geologists have been given free hand in presenting their particular topics, there are no fundamental departures in the chapter from the principles set forth by Lindgren. It would be entirely beyond the capacity of a single chapter to give a comprehensive geologic description of all the ore deposits of the western United States. Descriptions of individual deposits have been restricted to those features that are of most diagnostic genetic value. All of the more important deposits receive that much attention. Deposits of lesser economic importance and those inadequately known geologically are treated more briefly or merely cited under what seems to be their proper genetic assignment. The geographic limits of the descriptive matter are the Black Hills and the United States between the Rocky Mountains and the pacific Coast. Capacity of the chapter has made it necessary to impose these geographic limits.
