Mine management is often expected to make rapid evaluation decisions at different stages of projects based on limited and uncertain data. The challenge is exacerbated by having to distil technical complexity into a financial model that is usually designed to produce only one or two key indicators, eg net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR). Mining is a complex environment with many sources of uncertainty ranging from sampling to economics. In order to optimise investment decision-making, an appropriately structured evaluation framework must be utilised. An evaluation framework should be designed to encapsulate and integrate the complexity across the evaluation cycle, ie sampling, resource estimation, mine planning and treatment, and financial and economic modelling. This complexity is diverse and ranges from sampling support, scale effects to understanding the impact of variability, uncertainty and flexibility on operational efficiency and economic viability. These complexities, combined with time and capital constraints, usually do not allow all facets of evaluation to be integrated into the model. The model must strike a balance between simplified estimation techniques and sufficient incorporation of aspects of the project that will make a material difference to the investment decision. This paper demonstrates the impact of the scale of measurement on the valuation of a mineral project. Comparisons are made between global estimation averages using a top-down approach and local estimates using a bottom-up approach. Three sampling campaigns were conducted on a virtual orebody to compare the relative NPV accuracies. Stochastic forward models were run on foreign exchange rates and are compared with the results from a fixed foreign exchange rate model.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is conducting a program of research and development into alternatives to the use of conventional boilers for the generation of electricity from brown coal. The objectives of the program are to reduce the cost of electricity generation and also to improve the thermal efficiency so as to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. The program presently includes the following four technologies: Hydro-thermal Drying, Direct Coal Fired Gas Turbine, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle, and Steam Fluidised Bed Drying. The Hydro-thermal Drying process produces a combustible coal-water-slurry fuel which is suitable for use in a coal fired gas turbine. The coal fired gas turbine has the potential to produce electricity at a lower cost than conventional power stations and when combined with a steam cycle, it will also use significantly less coal. The Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle process gasifies the coal, cleans the gas, and then bums it in a gas turbine/combined cycle. This process is being developed in Europe and the USA in order to meet their stringent emission regulations. It offers Victoria cleaner more efficient and cheaper electricity.

The Channar Iron Ore Mining Project (the Project) is a joint venture involving the Hamersley Holdings group (Hamersley) and the China Metallurgical Import and Export Corporation (CMIEC). The Project represents the first new iron ore mine development in Australia since 1971/72 and is the first major overseas mining investment by the People's Republic of China (PRC). The Channar mine is being constructed in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and will operate for more than 20 years supplying the PRC with 200 M tonne of high grade iron ore. The Project is configured to take advantage of Hamersley's existing production and support facilities. The Joint Venturers will invest A$280 million to achieve an initial production rate of 3 M tonne/yr and an additional A$120 million over the next 8 years to achieve full capacity of 10 M tonne/yr. Financing the Project to meet the requirements of both Hamersley and CMIEC, with the dependance of the Project on Hamersley's infrastructure, and in a depressed iron ore market, required an innovative financial structure to be arranged in a limited period. This paper describes both the financial structure and its implementation, and draws a number of conclusions regarding the financing of resource projects.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baiyinnuo’er Zn-Pb deposit is a typical skarn deposit in NE China. Skarn and orebodies mainly occur between different units of the Lower Permian Huanggangliang Formation carbonates-sandstone-mudstone or within the contact between intrusions and marble. Skarn minerals are dominated by prograde garnet and clinopyroxene, and the main ore minerals are sphalerite and galena. We conducted single fluid inclusion compositional studies using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on clinopyroxene (pre-ore-stage mineral) and sphalerite and calcite (syn-ore-stage minerals). The results show that the Baiyinnuo’er fluids are distinctly different from basinal brine but similar to magmatic fluid, thereby indicating that the deposit has a dominantly magmatic origin. This interpretation has also been supported by the Cl/Br mole ratios, which remain stable (~500) in different fluid stages. The decreases for most of the elements in the fluid inclusions from pre-ore-stage clinopyroxene to syn-ore-stage sphalerite and calcite suggest that mixing with groundwater has occurred during mineralisation, with significant Zn, Pb and Ag deposition.CITATION:Shu, Q, Hammerli, J, Chang, Z, Lai, Y and Huizenga, J-M, 2015. Existing practical laboratory tests for comparative strength determination of commercial explosives consist of the lead block test, the ballistic mortar test, the bubble test etc. These tests are carried out in material with quite different properties compared to rock. The theoretical performance potentials of commercial explosives are traditionally described by weight-strength (WS). Some explosive producers use the Langefors formula for weight-strength calculation, where also the gas volume is considered. Neither the theoretical nor the practical methods for determination of explosive performance such as the above, give good enough prediction of fragmentation and heave in rock blasting. For these reasons a project was started for the purpose of finding a small scale test method which predicts how different explosive parameters affect fragmentation and heave. Small scale tests were carried out by using 50 cm cubical blocks, mainly of concrete, but a few also of rock. All blocks were blasted in a steel cylinder with a diameter of 1.2 meters. The velocity of detonation was monitored, and the velocity of fragments was derived from their time of arrival at the steel wall, which was registered by accelerometers. After blasting all fragments were screened. The charge diameter was 22 mm and the amount of explosive 78 grammes, resulting in a specific charge of 0.62 kg/m3. Explosive properties such as energy, gas, VOD and density were systematically changed.The results presented in this paper show how fragmentation and heave systematically change when the explosive properties like energy, gas, VOD and density are systematically changed. The results from the small scale tests are compared to full scale tests carried out in tunnel blasting, and during summer 1990 also in bench blasting.

Lacustrine sediments, hydrothermal explosion breccias and spring precipitates deposited 5200 - 1800 years BP as a result of geothermal activity at Lake Rotokaua, contain New Zealand's largest known sulphur reserves. Current drill indicated reserves are 2 600 000 tonnes of elemental sulphur, assuming a ten per cent (dry basis) cut-off, contained in some 17 000 000 tonnes of ore with an average grade of 214.0 per cent (dry basis) sulphur. Additional inferred ore containing 500 000 - 900 000 tonnes of sulphur has yet to be prospected by drilling. Geological factors will be important in exploitation of the deposit, particularly the extent and disposition of the orebody, sulphur grades and distribution, physical characteristics of the ore, permeability and stability of the overburden and the nature and extent of geothermal activity in the area. Trials to date indicate that Frasch mining and possibly opencutting are unlikely to be successful mining methods. Further mining feasibility studies will be required to ascertain the most likely mining system for the deposit.

"Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. Now, using freely available remote sensing data and desk study information, analytical modelling techniques can be used cost effectively to provide mining companies with a tool for assessing and managing their water consumption requirements at the outset of a new project venture.The paper includes a selection of case studies to show how the use of analytical modelling can be used as an evaluation and management tool to help not only assess general watershed parameters and water availability but also how it can be used as a tool to provide decision makers with the information to complete æwhat if?Æ scenario assessments. The combustion of brown coals in Latrobe Valley power stations produces approximately 500 000 tonnes of solid wastes each year. This material, which includes precipitator ash, char and furnace ash, is hydraulically sluiced to large ashing ponds and the supernatant solution is ultimately discharged to the sea. There are significant operational and capital costs associated with the current ashing system. The ash produced from the Latrobe Valley coals is unique and has a wide variety of potential applications including soil conditioning, concrete and cement extenders, fillers in non-metallic materials, components of building products. In addition, with the application of appropriate technology, it is possible to extract char, sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate and magnesium metal (as the chloride) in substantial quantities from the ash. Research has been carried out to explore the prospects of these various options for ash utilisation. The research has focused on detailed characterisation of the ash material and the potential extraction efficiency for various species under various conditions. From this work a conceptual process has been developed and subsequent studies have been directed towards understanding variables and optimising operating regimes for product extraction. Currently, the work is concentrating on the separation of char, the development of high-grade carbon products and the extraction of sodium sulphate.

Three methods of gold analysis are briefly described highlighting some of the problems and advantages of each. The variation of results between samples and splits and due to method of preparation is illustrated. The mean per cent difference of the fire assay values from the means of sample split values for three cases is 15 per cent.Finally, a comparison of the aqua regia leach atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and fire assay fusion AAS techniques is made.This shows that the mean precision, the ability to obtain the same value, of the methods at 98 per cent confidence is ± 30 per cent and ± 15 per cent respectively. The fire assay fusion AAS method is relatively more accurate than the aqua regia one.

The causes of ferrosilicon loss from Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants, and the related properties of ferrosilicon, are identified. Two characteristics, corrosion resistance and saturation magnetisation, are examined in detail. The chemistry of the corrosion mechanism is described and its relationship to plant parameters discussed. Methods of reducing corrosion losses are proposed. Lack of particle homogeneity, and its influence on corrosion and abrasion is noted. The relationship between low magnetic susceptibility-and increased magnetic separator losses is demonstrated experimentally.

The paper examines three types of polar zoning of ore-forming and associated elements that can be detected from geochemical data. Polar zoning is mapped in the form of geochemical ore systems of various ranks. Various types of polar zoning can be found in some systems, which present a general geochemical model of the ore object. The genetic basis of zoning is examined from the perspective of the conception of geoelectrochemical redistribution of matter, including ore-forming elements. The volume of the geochemical ore system may be used in the prognosis of resources for every rank.

The AusIMM/AMIC code for reporting Reserves seeks to improve the calibre of professional reporting on this subject. But have they gone far enough? Should the code appreciate that the degree of reliability of estimates required will vary with the type of mining planned? How does one "confirm continuity" as required by the code? The aim of optimum development drilling is to achieve appropriate ore zone definition for acceptable estimates of reserves and their economic extraction. Can this procedure be in conflict with the code? How does it affect finance decisions?

HYL developed a direct reduction process (DR) that does not require a reformer; it is called self-reforming process. Typically, direct reduction processes based on natural gas utilise a reformer unit to transform the natural gas into reducing agents (hydrogen and carbon monoxide). The reforming reactions are: CH4+H20-?3H2+CO CH4 + CO2 - 2H2 + 2CO These reforming units require a catalyst agent to promote the kinetics of the reforming reactions. The catalyst for these reactions is typically a metallic element such as nickel in a ceramic matrix; iron is also an excellent catalyst for the reforming reactions.

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.
