Since 1986, we have developed a series of electromagnetic (EM) sounding systems at the Laboratory for Advanced Subsurface Imaging (LASI). These may be categorized by their frequency ranges: low frequency (LF, 30 Hz to 30 kHz), medium frequency (MF, 1 kHz to 1 MHz), and high frequency (HF, 30 kHz to 30 MHz). We have applied these EM systems to a variety of targets, including: mapping of plumes of contaminated groundwater, tracing leachate for an in-situ leaching operation, locating buried hazardous waste, identifying subsidence-prone zones and detecting buried voids. These systems are also applicable to exploration for ore bodies. Currently, our sounding system uses a vertical magnetic field vector. Previous systems of this type required a slow and relatively inaccurate manual rotation of the sensing coils. The systems also used occasional calibrations of the measuring system. We have developed a 3-dimensional mathematical rotation procedure for the data, as well as a simultaneous, high-accuracy, calibration method. These new developments have greatly increased the speed of the measurements, as well as improving the accuracy of the ellipticity data. We use stepped-frequency measurements along with narrow-band filtering to allow accurate measurements, even in high-noise areas. We typically obtain ellipticity measurements at eleven frequencies and along densely sampled profile lines. We use neural networks to help interpret the measured ellipticity patterns. Neural networks can be trained to relate the measured ellipticity patterns to earth resistivities or to discrete targets buried in the earth. The neural network training may use theoretical EM responses calculated from computer codes for relatively simple structures. The theoretical EM response for many complex targets that are of interest cannot currently be reliably calculated, even with the largest supercomputers available. We have therefore chosen to do some of the training using theoretical EM responses generated in a full-scale modeling tank located at our Avra Valley Geophysical Test Site. We have also developed data-visualization software to help interpret the large data sets produced by this system.

IT is well known that the martensite reaction can be induced to occur isothermally above the M, temperature by plastic deformation of an alloy in its austenitic state, and also that as the test temperature is increased above the M. temperature, plastic deformation under a given set of conditions merely causes additional slip with a corresponding tendency toward the formation of less martensite per unit of strain. Thus it appears that a maximum temperature exists above which martensite cannot be formed isothermally by plastic deformation. This temperature is commonly designated as the equilibrium temperature Te. Attempts to determine experimentally the equilibrium temperature have indicated that a critical temperature is observed, under a given set of conditions, above which martensite cannot be formed isothermally by plastic deformation. But the observation of a "so called" critical temperature, Te, should not be confused with the equilibrium temperature, Te. In order to clarify this anomaly, true stress-strain curves were obtained for a series of type 304 stainless steel specimens (manufacturer's analysis, 0.08 pct C, 18 to 20 pct Cr, 8 to 10 pct Ni, balance Fe) over the temperature range 67" to 300°K.' Since martensite is magnetic, a quantitative measure of the amount of martensite that was produced by plastic deformation was obtained by determining the magnetic permeability as a function of strain. The results of these tests are given in Fig. 1. They appear to indicate that a plastic critical point does exist at about 240°K for the stainless steel under investigation here. But that 240 °K is not the equilibrium temperature nor even a true plastic critical temperature can be seen from Fig. 2 wherein the permeability of the same material is shown to increase with cold rolling at 293 OK. Consequently the observation of a "so called" plastic critical temperature is dependent on the mode of deformation and has no theoretical significance. THE relative partial molar heats of solution in liquid tin have been determined for phosphorous, arsenic, and antimony at 750°K. This work was carried out as part of an over-all program to determine the heats of formation of the III-V semiconducting compounds. A differential twin-type liquid tin solution calorimeter was used in the investigation. All three elements are endothermic upon solution in tin. The relative partial molar heats of solution go through a minimum value at arsenic. No concentration dependence of the heat of solution was found in the dilute (0 to 2 at. pct solute) solution range investigated. The measured heat effects and the calculated relative partial molar heats of solution at infinite dilution are listed in Table I along with the relative heat contents of the solutes calculated from the data of kelley.1 All of the values are referred to 750°K even though the calorimeter temperature fluctuated by *1°K during the course of the experiments. In this range of temperature change no variations were found which were outside the experimental error. This would be expected since the partial molar heat of solution is in general a very insensitive function of temperature. The limits of error given in Table I represent the standard deviation from the mean. The reported error estimates only apply to the estimated precision of the data and not the accuracy. Systematic errors could be present which would affect the absolute values given. This is especially true in the case of phosphorous and arsenic where vaporization could occur. If this were true, the experimental values reported here would be too high and the true partial molar heat of solution would be less than that given in Table I. Moreover, the heat-content data could be in error and this would also affect the calculated values. "Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. The Ore and ProductsThe mines in the Saskatoon area — Agrium, PCS-Cory, PCS-Allan, PCS-Patience Lake, PCS-Lanigan and IMC-Colonsay — extract the ore from the Patience Lake member. The mines in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan — IMC-K1 and K2, PCSRocanville — extract from the Esterhazy member, while IMC-Belle Plaine, near Regina, solution mines potassium chloride from both potash-bearing members.Ore from the Patience Lake member is a medium-grained mixture of sylvite and halite, with a KCl content of 36%, insolubles averaging up to 5.5%, and little or no carnallite.The ore from the Esterhazy member is a coarse-grained mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl) with a small amount of water insolubles, and some carnallite (a K-Mg chloride). Average run-of-mine grades are about 30% KCl."

The aim of this investigation was to study the influence that varying production rates have on iron sinter quality. This was done by performing sinter pot tests at different pressure drops over the sinter bed, namely 11 kPa and 15 kPa (for 500 mm total bed depths). During each of the sintering processes temperature-time profiles were recorded of the top, middle and bottom layers of the sinter bed. On completion of the sinter process the sinter cakes were divided into top, middle and bottom layers. The physical properties of each layer were subsequently characterized by performing a tumbler test and a sieve analysis. A comprehensive mineralogical study was also conducted on each layer. This study revealed that sinters of similar cold strength could be produced under the examined production rates. However, a higher production rate was accompanied by an increased amount of fines. The cold strengths of both sinters significantly increased from the top layer to the bottom layer of the sinter bed. This strength variation is not related in any simple way to the phase composition. Chemical thermodynamic properties for the ideal gas state from 0 to 1500 K are tabulated for all of the alkane hydrocarbons through C10. These properties are based on correlations of the extant data for the entropy, vapor heat capacity, and enthalpy of formation of individual alkanes and the equilibrium constants of alkane isomerization reactions.

Wyoming contains many petroleum and natural-gas fields, and more than 250 geological structures have been mapped; however, only about 85 have been found (July 1938) to contain petroleum or natural gas, or both, in commercial quantities. To January 1938 approximately 434 million barrels of oil and 915 billion cubic feet of gas have been produced, and it was estimated that proved oil reserves in Wyoming amounted to 300 million barrels.' The Salt Creek field, the largest in the Rocky Mountain area, alone has produced 64 percent of the State's oil and 46 percent of its gas. This field ranked thirteenth among the producing fields of the United States in total cumulative production as of January 1, 1938. On this basis it ranks with the Kern River and Huntington Beach fields of California and the Butler County fields of Kansas. The Salt Creek field has declined in relative importance; in 1937, while still the largest oil-producing field in the State, it produced 31 percent of the oil and 11 percent of the gas extracted from all wells in Wyoming.

The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

The extraction of nickel from Serbian and Western Australian lateritic ore by sulphuric pressure acid leaching (PAL) has been studied. The following parameters were tested: stirring rate, acid to ore ratio, reaction time, pressure and temperature. These studies were performed with ore samples from the Rudjinci, Serbia and Silcrete, Australia, both belonging to the laterite-silicate group of deposits. An increase of the reaction temperature and the stirring speed at a fixed acid/ore ratio showed a positive influence on nickel extraction. The decrease of the oxidation potential with time correlated with the increase in Fe(II) in solution and nickel extraction as the reaction went to completion for both ores. The target values of 95 % Ni extraction and 60 % Co extraction were attained in 5 min at 250°C for the Serbian silicate ore, at an agitation rate of 1500 rpm, 10 % solids, and acid/ore ratio of 0.40. Under similar conditions only 60 % Ni, but 69 % Co could be extracted from the Australian Silcrcte ore due to different mineralogy. The nickel extraction was shown follow a diffusion-controlled reaction model.

Under the investigation for critical and strategic minerals the Kaiser mine, formerly the Baxter fluorspar property, in northeastern Mineral County, Nev., was explored. The work comprised excavating 32 trenches averaging 90 feet in length, 8 feet in width, and 1 1/2 feet in depth. The trenches were excavated across the strike of the ore body to enable the engineer to spot the diamond-drill holes; 7 such holes were drilled, aggregating 3,276 linear feet. A total of 20 core samples and 107 sludge samples was taken. The work under this program indicated that the fluorspar southwest of the deposit extended laterally and also at depth at least 250 feet below the 400-foot level. INTRODUCTION The Kaiser fluorspar deposit is in the northeastern portion of Mineral County, Nev. Mining was begun about 1928, and the property has been a consistent producer of both Acid- and Metallurgical-grade fluorspar. The mineralized zone has been developed along a strike length of about 2,000 feet and to a depth of over 700 feet along the dip.

There is a lack of electrochemical studies of oxidized gold ores since the majority of previous studies were conducted with sulphidic gold ores. In this study, the influence of agitation and iron oxide minerals, i.e. magnetite, hematite, and maghemite on gold leaching was investigated by means of galvanic and passivation phenomena. Cyclic voltammetry studies of Roasted Gold Ore (RGO) in de-aerated electrolyte have shown one oxidation and one reduction reaction while three oxidation and one reduction peaks were observed with gold electrode. Galvanic coupling results by Zero Resistance Ammeter (ZRA) mode indicated that magnetite showed a negative effect on gold dissolution while maghemite and hematite showed a positive effect, relatively, as a result of higher galvanic corrosion rates. Generally, gold dissolution was found to increase in the initial 15 minutes. Increasing agitation speed from 100 to 400 rpm resulted in higher galvanic corrosion rates for RGO, magnetite, and maghemite electrodes, while 250 rpm was found to be optimum for hematite electrode. Passive products such as silver and iron-oxide were identified by XPS and SEM-EDS analysis, respectively.

A physical beneficiation flowsheet was designed by the Bureau of Mines for reclaiming and recycling metal and mineral values contained in municipal incinerator residues, and a continuous processing plant was installed. Residue samples collected from incinerators located in various parts of the country were processed at a rate of 1/2 ton per hour. Continuous screening, shredding, grinding, magnetic separation, and gravity concentration techniques were applied to produce metallic iron concentrates, clean nonferrous metal composites, clean fine glass fractions, and tine carbonaceous ash tailings. Research to develop systems for refining and upgrading the reclaimed metals and glass into marketable products is also underway. From the engineering data developed in the continuous processing plant, evaluations of the capital and operating costs for plants with capacities of 250, 400, 670, and 1,000 tons of dry incinerator residues per day were made. Research on a parallel system to separate and recover the metals, minerals, glass, paper, and plastics from raw, unburned refuse it currently underway, as are studies on the use of air classification to separate the refuse into organic and inorganic fractions.

The combined effects of the addition of Silicon (Si) as alloying element and low temperature annealing on the tensile properties of 70/30 brass with Nickel (Ni) and Iron (Fe) contaminants is investigated in this paper. Melts of cartridge brass were made to which 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 4 wt % of Si was added. These were sand cast into rods of 600 mm by 10 mm diameter and were thereafter machined into standard tensile test samples. Some of these samples were annealed in a muffle furnace at temperatures of 250, 300, 350, 400 and 450 oC respectively and the others were used as control. Subsequently, all the heat treated and non heat treated samples were subjected to tensile tests on a Hounsfield Extensometer and the load – extension plots retrieved were analyzed. Microstructural characterizations of the samples were carried out using Accu-Scope Optical Microscope. The results showed that cartridge brasses subjected to alloying and annealing treatments had improved tensile and yield strengths. However, the tensile properties were increased and maintained within acceptable limits at stress relieve annealing temperatures.

High-voltage direct -current transmission is a relatively new technology. The successful development and operation of AC/DC converters, capable of handling large power blocks, have made HVDC transmission generally accepted by utility engineer s and planners around the world. HVDC technology still has significant development potential and, as a result, it is expected that equipment costs will escalate at a substantially slower rate than those of conventional AC equipment. This development will also result in still more compact terminal stations. This paper reviews two modern HVDC installations. In Zaire in Africa. a 1700-km overhead DC line rated at 500 kv, will supply power to the copper mining district in the Shaba region. Another HVDC link connects Norway and Denmark through a submarine cable rated at 250 kv. This is the longest HVDC cable in the world, 127 km, and the water depth , maximum 530 m, is also much greater than for any previous similar cable. The reasons for selecting HVDC are discussed, and the design and layouts are presented.

The distribution of mercury in soils, rocks, and ore was studied in three areas of the Pachuca-Real del Monte District: (1) An area north of the town of Pachuca where ore veins have been found at or near the surface. The mercury content of soil samples taken near the vein zones is far above the background value. The highest value was 1900 ppb (parts per billion) mercury in a soil sample above Veta Vizcaina; the background is about 50 ppb Hg. (2) In the area north of the town of Real del Monte where only a few of the veins are known to crop-out. Regardless of exposure, soils collected over veins show anomalous mercury values ranging from 250 ppb to 1900 ppb. (3) In an area south of the town of Real del Monte. Here, although vein outcrops are lacking, mineralization is known at a depth of about 120 m. All soil samples taken at 50 m. intervals along an east-west traverse contain anomalous amounts of mercury, with peaks corresponding with the known location of the veins.
