Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual's subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part 'strategic minerals geophysical research'; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Unfortunately, experience in modern times with substantial price fluctuations and even resource cartels dictates the wisdom of identifying and maintaining a national chromite reserve, irrespective of the cost. An improved exploration methodology is an essential element in this strategic objective. The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. A CLAY, sand, and gravel deposit known as the "buried valley" of the Susquehanna River is situated in the Northern field of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania near Wilkes-Barre. The presence of this buried valley and the uncertainty regarding the extent and physical condition of the water-bearing valley-fill deposits have made great care necessary in mining operations to avoid breaking the strata between the mine workings and the valley-fill deposits to the extent that inundation of the mine workings would follow. The principal factor that threatens to cut short the life of the anthracite industry, to curtail production, and to affect the economic structure of the people and business dependent on anthracite for their livelihood is inundation of anthracite mines (6,7).3

In the Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting & Converting Process, the heat for the dissolution of scraps is effectively supplied from the melts strongly stirred by top injection. Various kinds of shape of scraps not only powder but also lump, sheet, cube and so on can be treated without any emission of dust and fugitive gas, and no additional furnaces for scrap processing is necessary. Therefore, this process is much suitable for recycling. The authors have investigated the melting rate of ice sphere into a water bath equipped with top blowing lances as a basic study for the dissolution of scrap. Hydrodynamic experiments were carried out, and mathematical models were applied to the results. The results show that the melting rate of ice sphere strongly depends on the standing waves at the bath surface.

El presente texto refiere el proceso historiográfico de la planta concentradora Mahr Túnel ubicada en el valle del río Yauli a 3.4 kilómetros de las coordenadas de la carretera central del Perú. La planta se construyó en 1937 para el tratamiento de los minerales de plomo, cobre, zinc de la mina San Cristóbal. La operación de la planta comprende: recibo del mineral, planta de chancado, circuito de molienda, flotación Bulk cobre- plomo, flotación de zinc, espesamiento y flitrado, disposición de relaves. Los datos estadísticos de la planta se basaron en la capacidad, número de obreros, número de empleados, fuerza eléctrica, consumo de barras y bolas y consumo de reactivos. La seguridad y higiene de la planta concentradora mencionada cuenta con un Comité de seguridad conformado por un Superintendente de campo, ingeniero de Seguridad y el médico de campamento, así como para casos de accidentes es suministrado por el Hospital de Mahr Túnel.

"This work is an extension of a previous investigation on the development of surface roughness during electrodeposition of copper. A comprehensive model based on diffusion and migration in a force field together with surface diffusion and sticking probabilities is used to generate profiles which are compared to those produced experimentally. The roughness is characterized by using the technique of fractal geometry which is shown to describe both qualitatively and 9uantitatively the development of surface morphology during electrodeposition.The work is extended to the deposition of copper in the presence of various concentrations of thiourea. The development of roughness is observed experimentally on the edge of a thin copper disc mounted between two glass plates. This enables photographs to be taken at various stages during growth. The surface outline is digitized using an image analyzer which enables the fractal dimension to be determined as growth proceeds. As expected, the presence of thiourea at low concentrations produces a fractal dimension which is closer to unity (i.e. the surface becomes smoother).IntroductionThe development of surface morphology during electrodeposition has far-reaching implications for copper plating in the electrowinning and electrorefining processes. Short circuits as the cathode surface grows unevenly require operator intervention in a dangerous environment and imply processing delays, and the inclusion of electrolyte in small gaps in the plated cathode have implications in downstream processing of the cathode. Higher current densities are obviously desirable, as they result in greater production rates, but as shown by Ettel et. al.(l), Harvey et. al.(2), Cook (3), and Harvey et. al.(4), it is not possible to operate near the projected economically optimum conditions because the electrodeposition of copper from sulphate and acid solutions is a mass transfer controlled process. It has been shown (Ettel et. al.(l), Harvey et. al.(2)) that the closer a system operates to mass transfer limiting conditions, the poorer the resulting cathode quality. One solution is to use agitation techniques to increase the limiting current density. Another is to add surface active additives to the electrolyte which has been shown by Ettel et. al.(l), Harveyet. al.(2) and Afifi et. a1.(5) to allow higher rates of production without decreasing cathode quality. The second proposed solution is of interest in this work, since there is very little knowledge of the conditions under which these additives operate effectively, and little fundamental understanding of the mechanism by which they operate. The current work seeks to contribute to this field by correlating a simulation model with experimental results to describe the development of surface morphology in the electrodeposition process."

The recovery of lead, silver and gold from existing and potential zinc process residues using a sulfidization-flotation method was investigated on a laboratory scale. The following residues were tested: neutral leach residue, high acid leach residue, and hematite residues. The sulfidization of lead and silver is carried out at low pH by the addition of a stoichiometric amount of sulfide at a controlled rate. To increase the particle size of the sulfides, seeding with synthetic lead and silver sulfides -is employed. The flotation is carried out at pH 2-4 using low pH-collectors such as dithiophosphates and dithiophosphinates. Special attention must be paid to the role of oxygen in the conditioning stage. The effect of different parameters on both the sulfidization and the flotation has been evaluated. Recoveries of 85-90, 90-95 and about 80 % were obtained for lead, silver and gold, respectively. Typically, concentrates containing 50-60 % lead, 3-5 kg/t silver and 10-15 git gold were produced.

"Physical impurity transfer in solvent extraction (SX) has a significant impact on operating costs, electrowinning (EW) performance, and cathode quality. Some operations use a wash stage to limit impurity transfer by diluting the entrained pregnant leach solution (PLS) to prevent direct transfer to EW. Wash stage operating conditions vary impacting impurity transfer. A number of factors impact dilution efficiency including mixer continuity, wash aqueous acidity, and organic quality. The impact of these variables on dilution efficiency was studied and compared to current industry practice. INTRODUCTION With the exception of iron, impurity transfer in copper SX is due to PLS carryover in the loaded organic via aqueous entrainment and crud movement. The quantity of impurity transfer is influenced by many variables including operating set points, organic quality, and settler housekeeping. Crud management and treatment is a common practice aimed at minimizing transfer of impurities to EW. Crud is a complex solid-stabilized emulsion of aqueous and organic[9]. As such, it contains a large aqueous component and the associated impurities (from the PLS). A common practice is to remove interfacial crud to prevent movement. Additionally, mixer continuity can be altered to enable compaction and improve the efficiency of interfacial pumping[10]. Understanding the factors impacting aqueous entrainment and optimizing the available controls should be a key focus for any operation. Aqueous entrainment in the loaded organic can be impacted by: • Mixer continuity • Mixer organic/aqueous (O/A) ratio • Mixer speed and impeller type • Organic and aqueous depths • Specific settler flow • Use of settler internals (picket fences, coalescing packs) • Organic quality • Design and operation of loaded organic tanks Conventional thought is to run the E1 mixer in aqueous continuity to reduce aqueous entrainment. Generally, O/A ratios close to 1:1 result in improved metallurgical and physical performance. Mixer speeds should be chosen to achieve acceptable stage efficiencies while minimizing over-mixing. Organic depths can be increased in the E1 stage to increase retention time and minimize aqueous entrainment. Settler internals can also be used, but require maintenance to maintain effectiveness. The quality of the plant organic inventory will impact physical performance. Poor organic quality can lead to higher phase disengagement times increasing impurity transfer to the electrolyte. Additionally, the design and operation of the loaded organic tank can impact impurity transfer[8]. Despite the variables that can be used to reduce aqueous entrainment and crud movement, impurity transfer is still an issue in some operations. For these operations with high PLS impurity concentrations, a wash stage may be beneficial to manage impurity transfer. Understanding factors impacting wash stage performance is important to optimize performance and limit impurity transfer."

Magma Metals Company operates an Outokumpu Flash Furnace, four Peirce-Smith Converters and two Anode Casting Wheels supported by six Anode Vessels. Process gasses from the Flash Furnace and Converters are treated in a two train/double contact sulfuric acid plant. Sulfur capture for the smelter is +98%. The new flash furnace was commissioned on July 7, 1988 and has processed over three million tons of sulfide concentrate without a major rebuild. Magma has gained unique experience in the operation of the flash furnace at high oxygen enrichments with low off-gas dust loadings. New procedures have been developed to maintain secondary material generation at equilibrium and for maintaining metallurgical control of operating parameters. This paper describes all the procedures, operation control parameters and operating philosophy that has allowed Magma to achieve superior performance.

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines showed that autoclave cyanide leaching of used automobile exhaust catalysts for recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) was technically feasible. This work involves a more detailed investigation of the chemistry of the dissolution of PGM in cyanide solutions. The PGM species in solution identified by ultraviolet spectroscopy. Pt and Pd cyanide complexes were square were The planar in geometry, while the Rh complex was octahedral. The rate of dissolution of the PGM was also investigated using a rotating disk technique. Dissolution rates increased in the order of Rh, pt, and Pd, respectively.

O alumínio por suas excelentes características físico químicas é empregado na indústria civil, automotiva, naval e aeroespacial. As características mecânicas dos sistemas solidificados dependem do arranjo microestrutural, mais especificamente do tamanho de grão, espaçamentos celulares ou dendríticos, das heterogeneidades de composição química, do tamanho, forma, distribuição das inclusões e das porosidades. A fusão de metais e, consequentemente, a solidificação, são etapas importantes na obtenção dos metais. Neste estudo iremos investigar a solidificação vertical ascendente em regime transiente do sistema Al-Mg. Está análise investigou experimentalmente o efeito das composições e dos superaquecimentos nas microestruturas solidificadas. Durante a fabricação dos lingotes, foram mapeadas a solidificação de cada liga. As microestruturas obtidas evidenciaram um aspecto essencialmente dendrítico, verificados através da microscopia óptica. É estabelecido no trabalho uma comparação entre os espaçamentos dendríticos primário (EDP ou ?1) e secundário (EDS ou ?2) em relação adição de 1, 3 e 5% de Mg e com patamares de superaquecimento (?TV) variando em 20, 40 e 60ºC.A variação do superaquecimento e da composição química dos lingotes teve influência nos espaçamentos dendríticos, verificados nas medições transversais e longitudinais dos lingotes. Para cada posição analisada foram obtidas uma média dos valores e o respectivo intervalo de dispersão.

O aço inoxidável duplex combina as propriedades mecânicas da ferrita à resistência à corrosão da austenita, sendo muito utilizado em aplicações industriais que requerem um bom desempenho quanto a essas propriedades. Quando esse aço é submetido a ciclos térmicos, fases secundárias podem se precipitar, o que causa a deterioração de suas propriedades. Dentre as fases que podem surgir, a fase sigma é a de maior relevância. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar e quantificar a precipitação da fase sigma quando o aço duplex UNS 31803 é submetido ao recozimento em diferentes temperaturas. Para essa análise foram utilizados a microscopia óptica e eletrônica, difração por elétrons retroespalhados, difração de raios - X, e espectometria de raios - X por dispersão em energia. Observou - se a presença da fase sigma em três das quatro condições adotadas no trabalho. A presença mais acentuada da fase foi observada na condição em que a velocidade de precipitação é máxima.

A 17-acre landslide occurred in February 2001, on a slope below Via Bellota in the City of San Clemente, California. Three homes were destroyed and many others placed in jeopardy. The landslide, involving portions of five separate developments, continued to move significantly in the years following. Litigation ensued among the affected parties, and investigations continued through 2007. A mediated repair resolution was ultimately reached among the parties. The agreed upon repair consists of a multi-million dollar stabilization program that included grading, drainage, and structural systems. Part of the construction cost was offset by creating 4 new ocean view custom lots and 20 new mobile home lots. The landslide repair and slope stabilization design involved removal and replacement of portions of the landslide debris and construction of buttress and stabilization fills as well as installation of 74 shear pins in two rows. The shear pins were designed as 4-foot diameter by 50 feet in length and incorporated continuous W30x211 wide flange steel. The shear pins were designed to be installed 25 feet above the slide plane and 25 feet below the slide plane at each location. Construction of the 74 shear pins was initiated in 2008 and completed in 2009. Four-foot diameter holes were drilled by utilizing a truck-mounted, flight-auger-style drilling rig with a 4-foot diameter solid-flight auger. Prior to the installation of the shear pins, an engineering geologist downhole logged strategically selected holes to further evaluate the actual slide plane elevations. The wide flange steel shear pins were then lowered to the desired elevations and encased within 4,500 psi, Type V, 0.45 maximum water/cement ratio concrete. Inclinometers installed within four pin shafts and behind the pin rows indicated performance in accordance with the design. Slight to non-perceivable shear displacement was measured which mobilized the intended capacity at the monitored shear pins. No excessive slope movement was detected at any of the inclinometer locations during or after the construction period. Actual shear displacement of the steel wide flange elements was less than the movement anticipated before shear pin installation.

Submerged arc furnaces (SAF) are used extensively in the production of ferrochrome, where charge material – consisting of mixtures of carbonaceous reductants, fluxes such as silica, and ore in the form of pellets – is fed through chutes into the vessel. The feed typically forms a thick bed or ‘burden’ of solid particulates above a bath of molten material below. This burden layer surrounds three electrodes, which are typically arranged in a triangular configuration in circular SAFs. A major challenge in the industry is the availability of sought-after reductants, volatile market conditions, and increasing electricity tariffs in South Africa. A good understanding of the physical properties of the raw materials in the charge is therefore of great value in order to best deal with the reductants available at any given time, and thereby maximising furnace throughput. This paper presents a study of the effects of different particle properties on particle flow behaviour relevant to SAF operations. Discrete element model (DEM) simulations were used to estimate the sensitivity of the particulate flow of beds of charge material to properties such as the coefficients of friction, particle shape and size, and others. The present study lays the groundwork for the development of full DEM models of the SAF that will greatly improve understanding of the flow of complex mixtures of solid particles in the submerged arc furnace, and how the relative physical properties of each component in the charge can influence electrical behaviour of the burden.

My. first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,1 July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when concentrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products; and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of, lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test, however, I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the contents in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of Mr. H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal.,in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg: or less.. As a consequence of the smallness of the 'quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

"Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticle suspensions were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. Experiments involving both clean model mineral suspensions and complex ultramafic nickel ores confirmed that conventional water-soluble molecular flotation collectors such as xanthate could be partially or completely replaced by hydrophobic nanoparticle flotation collectors. The ability of nanoparticles to induce flotation was demonstrated by floating hydrophilic, negatively charged glass beads with cationic polystyrene nanoparticle collectors. Electrostatic attraction promoted the spontaneous deposition of the nanoparticles on the glass surfaces raising the effective contact angle sufficiently high to promote the adhesion of beads to air bubbles. As little as 10% coverage of the bead surfaces with our most effective nanoparticles could promote high flotation efficiencies, whereas conventional small molecular flotation collector requires ~ 20% or higher coverage for a good recovery. Surface functionalized nanoparticles enhanced the ability for nanoparticle collectors to selectively deposit onto surfaces of the desired mineral particles in the presence of gangue. For example, poly (styrene-co-vinylimidazole) nanoparticles were designed to selectively deposit onto nickel mineral (pentlandite) in the presence of Mg/Si slime. Flotation tests of ultramafic nickel ores at Vale with these nanoparticle collectors have shown improvements in both pentlandite recovery and selectivity. On-going work includes attempts to identify specific applications where nanoparticle flotation collectors might be cost effective.INTRODUCTION Most mineral processing operations include multiple stages of froth flotation to concentrate and isolate the desired product. Before flotation, chemical collectors are routinely added to ground ore slurries, selectively binding to mineral-rich particles, increasing their hydrophobicity thus promoting selective flotation. (Fuerstenau, Jameson, & Yoon, 2007) Conventional collectors are surfactants with a short hydrocarbon tail and a head group, such as xanthate. A typical conventional collector is potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), which is a small molecule with an extended molecular length of about 1 nm. Critical characteristics of a good collector include the ability to selectively adsorb onto desired mineral surfaces and to lower the water/mineral surface energy. Despite the extensive role of flotation in mineral processing, some ores are difficult to process by flotation. For example, ultramafic nickel sulfide ore containing both valuable pentlandite and large quantities of unwanted Mg/Si slime [primarily serpentine, (MgFe)3Si2O5(OH)4] responds poorly to flotation. (Mani, Xu, Quinn, & Stratton-Crawley, 1997) Fibrous hydrophilic Mg/Si slime usually masks the surface of pentlandite (known as “slime coating”) due to electrostatic interaction (Edwards, Kipkie, & Agar, 1980) and dramatically depresses pentlandite flotation. Consequently, new approaches are required for processing these difficult ores."

This report presents a programme of work to demonstrate the use of a surface-based centralised computer control system for the remote monitoring and control of underground conveyors in a US coal mine. The system selected for demonstration was the 'Dynalink' Micro MINOS system which is manufactured by Hawker Siddeley Dynamics Engineering Limited. The site selected was Barnes S Tucker Lancashire No. 20 Mine located near Carrolltown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The system concept, operating and application software was designed and developed by the. British National Coal Board. The report describes the selection of the site, specification of the system requirements, commissioning, operation and evaluation of the system under typical US mine operating conditions. Experience with the system, based primarily on the system reliability and performance of conveyor control, was favourable. Mine management personnel felt that the system had successfully achieved its objectives and were keen to expand monitoring and control to other activities.

Previous measurements of the thermoelectric power of ionic crystals are reviewed briefly. It is concluded that, while extensive measurerements are available on systems in which the electrode M has a cation in cornon with the sall MX, there is as yet little modern work on systems in which the metal electrode M' does not haue a calion in common with the salt. We haue now measured the thermoelectric power of- single cryslals of KC1 and of KC1 + SrCl2 between plati.nu?n electrodes over a much wider range of temperature than before. individual ionic heats of transport, which, while probably not very accurate, are of a reasonable order of magnitude, are obtained from this data on the basis of an assumption that charge carriers do not cross the electrode/salt interface. RELATIVELY little work has been done on thermal diffusion in ionic crystals. Reinhold and coworkers1-I measured the thermoelectric power and Soret effect in silver and cuprous salts and their mixed crystals. One electrode was kept at constant temperature and electromotive force was measured as a function of the temperature gradient. This is not a satisfactory technique if the results are to be compared with theory; rather should the electromotive force be measured for small temperature differences as a function of the mean temperature of the two electrodes. They used electrodes having the same cation as the salt. Patrick and Lawsons measured the thermoelectric power of AgBr and of AgBr containing 0.25 mole pct CdBr2 using silver electrodes and temperature gradients of 10°C in the temperature range 100° to 400°C. The results were analyzed using the Teltow9 values of the ratio of the mobility of the two types of charge carrier (cation vacancies and interstitials) found from conductance measurements and the wagnerlo estimate of the heterogeneous contribution to the thermopower, Ohet They obtained values of qi = 0.017 ev and q$ = -0.385 ev for the heats of transport of interstitial Ag ions and cation vacancies, respectively. Their data has been reanalyzed by Haga using the corrections to the Wagner formula for ehet given by Howard andLidiard; Haga found ev. Christy et a1.14 have measured the thermopower of AgBr containing 0.01 to 1.0 mole pct CdBr,. They analyzed their results in terms of the theory of Howard and Lidiard and found that excellent agreement with the theory was obtained if q5 + : + hF was set equal to 0.70 ev at 175°C and equal to 0.58 ev at 250°C. Since Teltow's value for hF, the enthalpy of formation of a Frenkel defect pair, is 1.27 ev, this means that qt + q: increases in magnitude from -0.57 ev at 175°C to -0.69 ev at 250°C. This result is in poor agreement with Patrick and Lawson's value of -0.37 ev for pure AgBr (for which the corrections to the Wagner estimate for ehet are very small). christy1' has also reported thermopower measurements for pure silver halides and for the systems he finds that qr + qt for AgBr increases in magnitude from about -0.55 ev at 150°C to about -1.1 ev at 400°C. The temperature dependence of the sum of the heats of transport in AgCl is very similar in magnitude. The sum qi + q cannot be decomposed into the individual interstitial and vacancy heats of transport without a knowledge of the entropy contribution from the change in the lattice vibrational frequencies around the interstitial and vacancy. Despite this it seems an inescapable conclusion from Christy's analysis that and -6 = Q Ag are quite strongly temperature-de pendent and that -q: is much greater in magnitude than the corresponding activation energy for vacancy migration, +0.37 ev. It remains a mystery as to why the data for pure AgBr are fitted so well by the assumption of temperature-independent heats of transport if association of impurity ions and vacancies is neglected.l The values for q$ and q: so obtained are also much more in line with those expected from a simple kinetic interpretation of the heats of transport due to wirtz.17 Christy and Hsueh have also measured the thermopower of CuCl between copper electrodes; 0 for pure CuCl is comparable with that for the silver halides but, owing to the limited solubility of divalent cation impurities it was not found possible to deduce values for the heats of transport. In contrast to these extensive measurements on cells of the type M MX 1 M, there have been relatively few attempts to measure the thermoelectric power of cells of the form M' 1 MX I M'. (We specifically exclude from discussion cells of this type in which the metal electrodes M' are in contact with gas containing a controlled partial pressure of either M or X,, since in these cells the electrochemical reactions are analogous to those of the first type.) The thermoelectric power of Pb12, PbC12, TlC1, TlBr, TlI, NaNO3, and KNO 3 between platinum electrodes was measured by Thie1e.l3 In discussing these measurements Holtan20 asserts that the thermopotential initially fluctuated wildly and even changed sign before approaching a steady value. A high degree of irreproducibility is also evident in the work of Nikitinskaya and Murin21 who first studied the thermopower of NaCl and KC1 between platinum electrodes. Much better reproduci-bility was achieved in our earlier measurements on KC1;22 these were, however, confined to a relatively narrow temperature range and one of the objects of the work reported in this paper was to extend the temperature range of the measurements of the thermoelectric power 8 of KC1. This paper sets forth the mode of ore occurrence, characteristics of ore and country rocks, methods of exploration, development, and. ore extraction, and the costs of underground operation at No. 8 mine of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Works of the National Lead Co. located near the southern extremity of the Southeast Missouri lead district. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. T. Campbell, geologist, in the preparation of the paragraphs on the geology of the ores. HISTORY The first record of mining in St. Francois County, Mo., concerns more or less shallow semisurface "diggings" which were worked about the year 174-2. In 1864, however, the discovery of the disseminated deposits, the present source of lead, was made on property near the town of Bone Terre. Winslow has estimated the lead-ore production in this county prior to 1869 to be 59,526 tons.3
