O presente trabalho avaliou a capacidade de degradação bacteriana de cianeto da cepa Bacillus pumilus em efluentes contaminados. Para isso foram realizados estudos de degradação bacteriana de cianeto em frascos agitados e incubados em agitador orbital durante 120 horas. Os ensaios aconteceram em três etapas; a primeira etapa consistiu na ativação e crescimento da bactéria em meio Luria Bertani, seguida da adaptação a ambientes alcalinos e por ultimo a etapa de degradação de cianeto. A proporção de inoculo foi de 1:500. Utilizou-se tampão CAPS para manter o pH alcalino. Para avaliação da degradação de cianeto foi preparada uma solução sintética contendo 500mgL-1 de cianeto de potássio pH 10. Foi avaliada a influencia da temperatura na degradação bacteriana (27, 32 e 37oC). O controle do crescimento celular foi realizado por medidas de densidade óptica com comprimento de onda ?=600nm. A quantificação do cianeto livre foi realziada por polarografia utilizando-se o analisador voltamétrico (computrace control 797 Metrohm). Dos resultados obtidos foi possível determinar que a cepa B. pumilus obteve melhor desempenho na degradação de cianeto a temperatura de 27oC conseguindo degradar 100% do cianeto livre presente na solução. O tempo empregado para a degradação total do cianeto foi de 3 dias.

It has long been recognised that narrow vein mining needs innovative approaches to mine access and mining methods in order to improve the economics of this vital part of the mining industry. The mining equipment used currently requires large openings in narrow vein-type deposits making mining operations uneconomical. In view of this and other shortcomings of the current mining practices, a study was initiated to investigate the potential of using low profile electric loader with mounted conveyor in conjunction with the electric monorail haulage system (EMTS) to load and haul the blasted material, particularly in decline development and main haulages. Computer simulation based on the General Purpose Simulation System/Henrikson (GPSS/H) is used to model the system and evaluate its performance. The results are compared with those for conventional mining using trucks and loaders. The EMTS provides competitive haulage rates in substantially smaller excavations than is currently achievable. According to simulation results, the electric loader in conjunction with the EMTS had the same number of blasts as the conventional system and hence the same advance rate of 3.33 m per 12 hour shift. Furthermore, the total drill-blast-load-haul cycle time was less than the conventional system by one hour.CITATION:Besa, B and Chanda, E K, 2012. This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the United States Bureau of Mines and made possible through the cooperation f many mining companies in the United States and foreign countries. The preparation of this paper follows a field study of top-slice mining during which the author visited and discussed with operating officials a large number of iron mines in the Lake Superior region. During this study special note was made of changes in top-slicing practice during the past decade, prior to which the author had acquired several years experience with the method through active connection with a number of mines employing top slicing.

The purpose of this program was threefold: (1) to identify the symptoms of poor or inadequate performance of trolley carrier phone systems; (2) to assess the root causes of performance difficulties and classify them on the basis of equipment, coupling, or transmission; (3) to propose, analyze, test, evaluate and verify means of overcoming performance difficulties. Based on interviews and discussions with knowledgeable persons, laboratory experiments, and in-mine measurements, it was determined that the major impediment to good carrier phone system performance is the extreme signal attenuation found on the trolley wire/rail largely due to the many bridging loads. Three means are identified to help overcome the performance difficulties: the low impedance trolley wire, a method of improving performance by capacitively loading the transmission line; the dedicated wire, a low-loss means of extending trolley signal coverage; the use of isolators to remove the offending bridging loads at the carrier frequency. Other subjects treated in the report are design reviews of hardware, guidelines for the use of information in the report, recommendations, and a description of a probe for measuring trolley wire current.

A three-dimensional computer model for the Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting process for copper matte is presented. The model incorporates the transport of momentum, heat and mass, and reaction kinetics between the gas and particles in a particle-laden turbulent gas jet. The k-E model is used to describe gas-phase turbulence in an Eulerian framework. The particlephase is treated from a Lagrangian viewpoint which is coupled to the gas phase through the source terms in the Eulerian gas-phase governing equations. Matte particles were represented as Cu2S·yFeSx. Based on experimental observation, the oxidation products were assumed to be Cu2O, CuO, Fe3O4, and SO2. A reaction mechanism involving the external mass transfer of oxygen to the particle surface and diffusion of the oxygen through the oxide layers of CuzO/Fe304 and CuO/Fe3O4 is proposed. Predictions of the mathematical model were compared with the experimental data collected in a large laboratory furnace. A reasonable agreement between the model predictions and the measurements was obtained in terms of fractional conversion of the oxidation reactions and of sulfur remaining in the reacted particles. The simulation of an industrial flash converting furnace was also performed. Higher oxidation rates, more even distribution of particles, and thus a more efficient use of the reactor volume are predicted with a burner having a distributor cone, than with a single-entry burner.

A aplicação de materiais metálicos exige que os mesmos sejam submetidos a etapas de conformação mecânica. Estes procedimentos elevam significativamente a densidade de descontinuidades, alterando a morfologia dos grãos, assim como o estado de tensão induzida na estrutura. Os materiais submetidos a processos de conformação, em especial aos de conformação a frio, são submetidos, após a deformação, a um tratamento térmico denominado de recozimento de recristalização, cujo objetivo é recuperar a estrutura e recristalizar os grãos. Neste contexto, estudou-se a viabilidade de aplicação da técnica de calorimetria diferencial (DSC), como ferramenta para a determinação da temperatura de início de recristalização de aços. Para a execução deste trabalho, foram utilizados amostras de aço SAE1010 que foram deformadas a frio e em seguida submetidas a rampas de aquecimento em um equipamento DSC. A técnica de DSC evidenciou apenas o início do fenômeno de recuperação do material. Algumas amostras deformadas foram submetidas a tratamentos térmicos de recozimento de recristalização a 500°C, 600°C e 700°C. A partir da caracterização microestrutural e de ensaios de microdureza, calculou-se os valores de k e n do modelo de Avrami para as amostras tratadas a 600°C e 700°C, obtendo-se após isto a energia de ativação para as deformações de 69,6% (199,5KJ) e 87% (178,4KJ). À 500°C, as amostras não se recristalizaram, confirmando esta temperatura abaixo da crítica para as deformações estudadas.

"The Floatability Characterisation Test Rig or FCTR is a highly instrumented, mobile flotation pilot plant built by Baker Process (now EIMCO) for the AMIRA P9 Project for use in flotation plant modelling and simulation studies. With the Mintek Floatstar system controlling the level in every cell, and the facility for full stream sampling on all streams, the FCTR is a unique tool for producing data of sufficient quality for flotation plant modelling. The plant was commissioned at Lonmin's Karee and Eastern Platinum concentrators in 1999/2000, and completed a number of test work programs to investigate the effect of power input and regrinding on metallurgical performance. Lonmin's experience with the FCTR has caused it to build two of its own to undertake further projects on its various mines. Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple, powerful metric that provides a comprehensive measure of classification system performance. CSE directly quantifies the amount of coarse solids in the mill, and as a result, also directly quantifies the percentage of mill power being used effectively. In this manner, it is an effective, practical grinding energy efficiency metric.Three independent variables drive CSE: circulating load ratio, sharpness of classification, and classifier bypass. Due to practical downstream constrains on per cent solids, improvements realised by increasing circulating load reach diminishing returns as sharpness of classification and bypass deteriorate in the most commonly used classification device, the hydrocyclone. This combination of effects leads to the use of CSE, and its relationship to operational economics, as an objective circuit optimisation criterion.Its simplicity in measurement makes CSE a useful tool for the plant metallurgist, and it is not subject to a great amount of experimental error. CSE provides the plant operator a fast, simple, and effective means to evaluate the performance of the plant classification system. Improvements in CSE relate directly to circuit throughput and energy efficiency. Crushing ore prior to heap leaching enhances mineral liberation and creates fine particles that may require agglomeration to avoid permeability problems during leaching. Conventional modeling is relatively successful in describing general fluid flow and extraction in heaps. However, most models do not adequately account for the effects of mineral liberation and exposure or the effects of agglomeration, curing, and loading on heap leach performance. This paper will discuss methods to account for mineral liberation and exposure as a function of comminution. It will also discuss methods for incorporating liberation, exposure, and mineral locking as well as curing and fluid flow in heap leach modeling. It will also provide information regarding agglomeration and the effect of loading in heap leach modeling.

This investigation was made as part of a larger program to develop basically new methods for preparing yttrium metal in high-purity form. It was performed under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Laboratory-scale tests were made to devise methods for preparing high-purity, anhydrous yttrium trichloride, for reducing the yttrium trichloride with sodium or lithium, and for consolidating the resulting yttrium sponge into ingots.

No cenário atual de empobrecimento da qualidade das matérias-primas carregadas nos altos-fornos, torna-se fundamental compreender os fenômenos que afetam diretamente a estabilidade operacional desses reatores. Este trabalho avaliou uma relação entre queda de pressão e intensidade de irrigação com a intenção de associá-los aos fenômenos de retenção e refluxo que ocorrem na zona de gotejamento de um alto-forno a coque. Não foi possível obter claramente uma relação entre as instabilidades operacionais e a ocorrência de fenômenos de inundação, porque não há uma separação clara entre os dias com e sem as instabilidades operacionais. No entanto, ao longo de um intervalo definido no diagrama, é notável uma maior ocorrência de instabilidades. Analisando os parâmetros, o que tem maior influência na permeabilidade da zona de gotejamento é a distribuição do tamanho do coque, avaliada pelo cálculo do diâmetro harmônico.

Pumps play a critical role in mining operations, and their energy consumption and environmental impact are significant. This paper addresses the need for a holistic approach to sustainable pump deployment by expanding on previous work presented at IMPC Asia Pacific 2022 and World Mining Congress 2023. The research takes a significant step forward by outlining a structured approach to estimate and demonstrate sustainability tailored for operational slurry pumps. It details the calculation methodologies used to quantify the carbon dioxide emissions from electricity, wear materials and transport, as well as sealing water usage. To enhance practicality and usability, a simplified visual representation—called sustainability metrics—has been developed to monitor overall efficiency. The sustainability metrics consist of the availability, pump efficiency, and water utilisation efficiency. The proposed methodology is integrated with Pumps Condition Monitoring Service to maximise benefits. Three case studies, from iron ore, copper, and nickel operations globally, were employed to evaluate the proposed methodology. The findings demonstrate the critical role of sustainability calculations in understanding pumps operation. These calculations improve awareness of the pump’s role in the sustainability journey and enable effective monitoring. The studies highlight that continuous monitoring paired with effective prescriptive maintenance strategy can significantly reduce power and water consumption while maximising pump availability. The case studies also reveal significant shortcomings in current operational practices and non-optimal maintenance regimes, emphasising the need for practical recommendations to maximise savings and optimise pump performance. In the context of increasing climate change awareness and the imperative for global decarbonisation, this research highlights the necessity of critically assessing methods and operations to drive sustainability in the mining industry. By adopting a holistic approach to sustainable pump deployment, mining operations can effectively reduce their environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency and economic viability. The proposed methodology and case studies provide valuable insights and practical recommendations for mining companies seeking to achieve sustainable practices and contribute to a decarbonised future.

The flotation of sulfide ores that contain carbonaceous gangue requires significant operational and chemical intervention to achieve suitable metallurgical outcomes. Carbonaceous gangue dilutes concentrate grades, alters the froth behaviour, reduces operational stability, adsorbs reagents, and reduces value recovery. Carbon management processing strategies like preflotation and depression are often presented as point solutions. Moreover, oversimplified mechanisms of carbon depressants belie their complex and nuanced impact on flotation behaviour. Optimising the flotation of carbonaceous sulfide ores requires a holistic consideration of interactions between the carbon management reagents and the processing strategy, ore mineralogy, flotation behaviour, flowsheet, and all other aspects of the flotation system. Examples are shown where conventional, simplistic mechanisms of carbon depressants fail to explain the observed flotation behaviour. The multifaceted impacts of carbon depressants on froth behaviour, collector performance, and value recovery highlight the need for a holistic approach to carbon management. A contaminação de solos e do ambiente hídrico por hidrocarbonetos de cadeias longas, geralmente por rompimentos de dutos ou por acidentes ocorridos no seu transporte afetam o meio ambiente de forma deletéria. Visando aplicabilidades futuras na remediação de solos e águas, existe a necessidade de estudos de biodegradação específicos, como por exemplo, bactérias que utilizam óleos de cadeias longas como fonte de carbono, visando melhorar o entendimento do mecanismo de interação do óleo com as bactérias. Baseado neste raciocínio, para desenvolvimento deste trabalho que visou encontrar, estudar e entender o metabolismo de uma microbiota capaz de utilizar hidrocarbonetos de cadeias longas como fonte de carbono, foram isoladas linhagens de bactérias provenientes de uma comunidade encontrada em borra de petróleo. Esta comunidade bacteriana teve avaliado seu poder de biodegradação de várias moléculas, constituintes do petróleo, assim como a sua preferência metabólica por cadeias específicas, resultando em um melhor entendimento do processamento dos componentes do óleo derivado de petróleo por micro-organismos. Os resultados de cromatografia comprovaram a biodegradação através da redução dos picos, e através do estudo dos cromatogramas foi possível identificar as substâncias biodegradadas.

"The goal of this paper is to present a tool to simulate transient melting of the electrode tip. This capability is needed to develop and test furnace control algorithms since experimental determination is difficult and expensive. Simulation incorporates parameters (including arc voltage, arc current, electrode gap and furnace pressure) from previous quasi steady experiments with 460 mm diameter Inconel 718 electrodes.Cathode heating rates (determined by classical as well as experimental arc models) are linked to these independent variables. IntroductionThe vacuum arc remelting (VAR) process attempts to improve the physical and chemical homogeneity of a static-cast electrode by remelting and solidification in a quasisteady manner. To achieve steadiness of furnace operation requires automatic controls based on inputs measuring physically relevant state variables of the process. Previous industrial scale VAR studies (1,2,3) involving stainless steels, superalloys, and other alloys have provided a basis on which control strategies of some generality can be proposed (4). The pioneer work on pressure hydrometallurgy was conducted in Russia at the end of the nineteenth, and the beginning of the twentieth centuries, by Karl Josef Bayer (1847-1904) and Vladimir Nikolyevitch Ipatieff (1867-1952), both working independently in Saint Petersburg. Bayer was studying pressure leaching while Ipatieff was studying the precipitation of metals and their compounds by hydrogen under pressure. Gradually, industrial applications took place first in the aluminium and later in the nickel industry. Today, the technology is well established in a large number of industries, such as uranium, gold, zinc, titanium, tungsten, and more recently copper.

In the design of plants to separate helium from natural gas , it is necessary to estimate the enthalpies of the various streams at various positions in the process . This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities . The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented , and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed . It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred .

In 1940 the Bureau of Mines issued a report describing all the cement plants of Latin America, their design, capacity, and output, and the cement imports, exports, and requirements of the several countries. Since that time there has been such great activity in cement plant construction that a revision of the paper is highly desirable. The present compilation comprises the essential data in the previous report together with descriptions of all cement plants completed, under construction, or planned since that date and an overall picture of the supply and requirement situation of each country. Before World War I, Latin America was one of the world's largest export markets for cement. Its dependence on outside sources created no special problems of supply until the shortage of shipping and abnormally high prices of the First World War stimulated a movement toward greater self-sufficiency. Under this incentive many cement plants were constructed, and several countries were able by 1939 to manufacture enough cement for their modest needs. Substantial imports were still required for many important areas, and as the volume of demand was rapidly increasing the Latin American countries as a whole were far from self-sufficient in cement when tine Second. World War began. South and Central America depended to a large extent on European countries, chiefly Germany arid Belgium and to a smaller degree Scandinavia, United Kingdom, France, and Italy, to Supply their cement shortages. The cost of manufacture in these European countries was much lower than in the United States, and transportation expense had been kept at a particularly low level because of the two-way trade that had been developed. Ships destined for Latin American ports for coffee, tropical woods; fruits, and other native products could carry cargoes of cement on their westward voyages at very low cost In some instanced cement was taken in exchange for South American -products because cash was not available. Great Britain had withdrawn from this market to quite an extent because of low prices and because trade with its own Empire had been increasingly fostered. United States trade in cement with Latin America had been confined principally to white and other special varieties. In few places could ordinary portland cement made in the United States compete in price with the European products; although in general it was of better quality and cool d be delivered more promptly.

This report summarizes research into the root causes of failures in mine power systems which impact safety and reliability. Abnormally low fault currents, due to arcing faults, self-excited systems, and fallen trolley wires are examined and quantified. The reliability of components which are critical for safety is studied, as well as reliability of components which are crucial to the mining pro cess. Failure rates are found through in-situ tests, accelerated life tests, studies of mine maintenance, and fault-tree analysis. Reliability data is used to predict fatalities and lost-time accidents through computer-aided fault-tree analysis. Analytical support tasks reported include the deriving of trailing-cable ampacities under cyclic loading, and the measurement of connected ground beds.

Prevention of coal-mine explosions depends largely upon thorough knowledge of the causes that initiate explosions. A review of coal-mine explosions in one geographical area when supplemented by nationwide data of similar nature, should serve as a guide for the adoption of measures for explosion prevention. Explosions in bituminous-coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ended December 31, 1932, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents and constituted 16.1 percent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines. Kentucky now ranks fourth in coal output in the coal-producing States of this country; a study of the coal-mine explosions in this state will be of definite interest locally among coal-mining people, as well as to those in the coal-mining industry who are concerned in preventing coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews gas and dust explosions in Kentucky coal mines to show their hazards, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to indicate the effectiveness of preventive measures.
