Introduction Shale Mining Problems The mining problems an oil shale operator will face are largely determined by the process. Candidate oil recovery processes are surface (above ground processing of mined oil shale), modified in situ (underground with some shale removed), and true in situ (completely underground with no shale removed). The shale removed for modified in situ (MIS) is generally processed by surface techniques. The mining problems are different for each category. Fig. 1 depicts the diversity of western shale deposits. Mining for surface operations will employ underground mining techniques in common use but the scale will be larger. A typical oil shale operation is expected to require 75,000 to 250,000 st (68 000 to 226 800 tons) a stream day of crushed oil shale. This is above the upper limit of current mining operations. Major problems in¬clude: (1) lack of good engineering design properties for oil shale, especially when interbedded with saline minerals at depths below 1,000 ft (305 m); (2) presence of water, hydrogen sulfide, and methane in some areas; (3) necessity for mine disposal of as much retorted oil shale waste as possible; and (4) control of en¬vironmental impacts of mining. Portions of the oil shale deposits in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah and significant portions of the Devonian shales in the eastern U.S. are adapted to surface mining. No major technological problems are apparent outside overburden thicknesses up to 1,000 ft in the West. However, numerous political and environmental dif¬ficulties have arisen. One major oil shale developer cancelled a planned surface mining operation and currently is pursuing a modified in-situ plan. The eastern shales are closer to the surface than the western, but suffer from many of the same environmental and political problems. Modified in-situ operations face much more severe mining problems than surface efforts. Because the mined stope (called an in-situ "retort" by processors) acts as a retorting process vessel subject to gas flow, combustion, and temperatures between 1,500° and 2,000°F, mining is under highly restrictive limitations. This processing method involves removing between 20 and 40% of the shale deposit and then blasting the roof and walls into the mined space, where the oil is recovered by retorting. Major problems are: (1) swell factor severely limited; (2) need for consistent size distribution of blasted shale; (3) even filling of stope (in-situ retort) by blasted shale with consistent permeability throughout; (4) scaleup of blasting techniques, after optimization; (5) protection of retort pillars and roof during and after retorting; (6) prevention of groundwater percolation; (7)use of ANFO explosive in wet holes; (8) disposing of surface-retorted shale waste in stope; and (9) restoration of site. This report presents the results obtained in a study of the technical feasibility of recovering a usable pig iron by pyrometallurgical treatment of typical copper reverberatory slags . The iron in the slag was readily reduced with carbon , but the copper and sulfur content of the metal was best controlled by a three - stage procedure comprising ( 1 ) melting the slag with pyrite to remove copper as a low- grade matte , ( 2 ) smelting the partly decopperized slag with fluxes and carbon to reduce the iron , and ( 3 ) refining the impure iron alloy from step 2 with a flush slag to remove sulfur and residual copper . Laboratory - scale tests demonstrated that washing with 8 wt pct of pyrite lowered the copper content of a typical reverberatory slag from 0.58 to 0.12 Subsequent smelting of a mixture composed of 70 pct decopperized slag , 25 pct lime , and 5 pct coke reduced 84 pct of the iron to metal containing 2.27 pct sulfur . This metal then was successfully desulfurized by treatment with a basic flush slag to produce a finished metal that contained , in percent , 93.5 Fe , 0.02 S , 0.26 Cu , and 4.9 C. Overall recovery of iron under the conditions of trial was about 80 pct . This could be increased if higher tolerances for copper could be accepted . Commercial processing would be accomplished in three furnaces with molten materials passing from one to another . Currently produced smelter slag could be treated fairly inexpensively , because the molten product would require only a little additional heat to produce an iron byproduct that undoubtedly would be attractive to local foundries .

The authors conducted a study of backfill practices in underground mines across Canada to assess the current state of backfill usage and to overview potential hazards associated with backfill practice, from preparation to transportation to placement. The primary aim of this study was to cover each component of a typical mine backfill system, and to identify potential incidents leading to the disruption of backfilling operations and any associated corrective actions. This paper, Part I of the study, deals with surface operations consisting of backfill material supply and backfill plant preparation. Part II of the study, which deals with underground operations consisting of backfill transportation and backfill placement, is also presented in these proceedings. A review of safety measures associated with current backfill operations and recommendations for procedures of best practice that should be implemented to reduce fill-related hazards in all mine backfill workplace environments are presented. In general it has been found that system failures normally lead only to minor losses to the operations.

Numerous supergene manganese oxide deposits are developed inSouth China as a result of weathering of a thick sequence of Paleozoic marine Mn-bearing sedimentary rocks, consisting mainly of limestones, cherts and black shales that were intensely folded and faulted due to multiple episodes of tectonism since the late Triassic. The ore minerals are dominantly pyrolusite, cryptomelane, nsutite, lithiophorite and braunite. The supergene manganese ores contain Mn ranging from 20 to 44 wt per cent; manganese oxide deposits derived from cherts and black shales also contain recoverable levels of Co, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn. 40Ar/39Ar dating of potassium-bearing manganese oxides reveals that extensive supergene manganese ore formation started at least in the earliest Miocene and persisted to the Present. Ages of the deposits show a close correlation to tectonic stability, with the oldest in tectonically quiescent areas and the youngest in active areas that have subjected to continuous uplift and thus significant denudation. The prolonged wet and hot climate since Oligocene and the balance between weathering and erosion, which is parameter to the tectonic stability, are the ultimate controls on the formation and distribution of South China supergene manganese oxide deposits. Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields, with rapid depletion of existing reserves, emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry for meeting increasing market demands; but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields. Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most current operations are of the pressure-maintenance type, in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to in-crease oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes current gas-and water-injection projects in California.

The mentor/learner model is a time-honored approach to teaching, including within the mining industry. Miners know when they see excellence and have a deep respect for experts in their field. By using expert miners as mentors to other, less-experienced miners, training programs can be developed that will have a legitimacy and credibility that resonates with those being trained. Building upon concepts in current theories of adult education, this paper highlights the unique advantages of using mentoring as a teaching method that can make the educational experience both interesting and effective. Current NIOSH safety training materials use these concepts to deliver effective adult learning experiences for workers in the mining industry.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among workers. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy construction equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. One hundred and eighty nine operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, the need to perform a larger survey to further substantiate the outcome, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

There is approximately 240 000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide dust stored in underground chambers at the Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. To minimise the amount of arsenic released to the environment, a number of closure alternatives are being considered. One alternative is to mine the dust, encapsulate it and dispose the mixture into a secured landfill. The potential leaching behaviour of the encapsulated dust was examined in a laboratory programme. Cylinders of arsenic trioxide dust mixed with cement/aggregate and bitumen were prepared. The dust content varied between zero per cent and 60 per cent of dry weight charge. The cement cylinders were tested for strength, leaching and freeze/thaw durability. The bitumen cylinders were tested for leaching only. The results show that increasing dust content in the cement cylinders negatively impacts the strength and the freeze/thaw durability of the samples. A contributing factor is likely the high water to cement ratio in the samples. Leaching tests show that arsenic release from cement cylinders increase with increasing dust content. Arsenic concentrations in leachates do reach a plateau at a certain point in time. Arsenic release from bitumen cylinders was significantly lower compared to cement cylinders. Arsenic concentrations eventually were less than 0.05 mg/L in samples containing up to 25 per cent arsenic trioxide dust. Arsenic leaching rates were found to decrease by an order of magnitude over the course of three months.

Numerical modeling was used to investigate the feasibility of using two geophysical imaging techniques, cross-borehole ground penetrating radar (XBGPR) tomography and electrical resistivity (ER) tomography, for detecting and characterizing defects in deep-mixed soil columns. XBGPR modeling was accomplished with a three-dimensional numerical forward modeling code and a two-dimensional inversion routine. Spatial variations in apparent dielectric constant (Ka) and attenuation (a) were mapped. Electrical resistivity modeling was accomplished with a three-dimensional numerical forward modeling code and a three-dimensional inversion routine. Spatial changes in electrical resistivity were then mapped. Three different types of defects were simulated, in addition to a defect-free column. The computer simulations suggest that XBGPR tomography and ER tomography might be useful, non-destructive methods for detecting and estimating the extent of defects in deep-mixed soil columns. The results show that small, isolated defects might be difficult to detect, but defects approximately equal to or larger than the sampling interval (for XBGPR) or vertical electrode spacing (for ERT) should be detectable.

In an attempt to develop a suitable precast concrete support for underground use, two different models (1955 and 1958) of a five-piece concrete set were designed, fabricated, and tested under adverse loading conditions. Model 1955 was designed to withstand an ultimate, uniformly distributed, vertical load equivalent to what a three-piece, 12- by 12-inch wood set of intermediate-grade Douglas fir would withstand. A design figure of 138,000 pounds for the vertical load was used on both the 1955 and 1958 models. In addition, the 1958 model was designed to withstand a uniform horizontal load of 7,000 pounds per foot and additional concentrated-point loading. The step- by-step design of each model is presented in the appendixes. A series of five destruction tests was conducted underground on the 1955 model, and results of the tests showed that the type and method of blocking were of major significance.

This paper discusses how Bald Mountain Mine dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with a liquid reagent called UNR 811A. The reagent is marketed by Cherokee Chemical Co., Inc. A summary of the bench tests comparing several different reagents is given. The ensuing plant trial is discussed and results are presented. The plant trial treatment costs are discussed. Finally, potential cost savings are discussed.

Exxon Minerals Company, a division of Exxon Corporation, has been exploring for base metal deposits in the Precambrian volcanic rocks in northern Wisconsin since 1970. Aerial electromagnetic surveys of the area, conducted in 1974, reported an anomaly, near Crandon, in Forest County. In the summer of 1975, the first diamond drill entered the anomaly, representing the 25th prospect Exxon had drilled in Wisconsin. This first hole revealed significant mineralization containing zinc and copper. Subsequent drilling confirmed the discovery of a sizeable zinc-copper massive sulfide are body. 1.1.2 Location The deposit is located in northeastern Wisconsin within a topographical high called the Northern Highlands region. The deposit lies about 5 miles directly south of Crandon and about 2 miles east of State Highway 55 on Sand Lake Road (see fig. 1). Other local communities include Rhinelander 28 miles west, Antigo 45 miles south, and Iron River and Iron Mountain, in Michigan, 75 and 44 miles east and north of Crandon respectively. In relation to the lakes and streams, the deposit lies 0.25 miles north of Little Sand Lake, and about 1 mile south of Swamp Creek.

Operators of construction equipment perform various duties at work that expose them to a variety of risk factors that may lead to health problems. A few of the health hazards among operators of construction equipment are: (a) whole-body vibration, (b) awkward postural requirements (including static sitting), (c) dust, (d) noise, (e) temperature extremes, and (f) shift work. It has been suggested that operating engineers (OEs) are exposed to two important risk factors for the development of musculoskeletal disorders: whole-body vibration and non-neutral body postures. Method: This review evaluates selected papers that have studied exposure to whole-body vibration and awkward posture among operators of mobile equipment. There have been only few studies that have specifically examined exposure of these risk factors among operators of construction equipment. Thus other studies from related industry and equipment were reviewed as applicable. Conclusion: In order to better understand whole-body vibration and postural stress among OEs, it is recommended that future studies are needed in evaluating these risk factors among OEs.

Concentrators processing PGM bearing ores make use of polysaccharide depressants to reduce the recovery of the undesired naturally floatable gangue minerals, mainly silicates, present in the ore. Recent work has shown that high depressant dosages can completely depress naturally floatable gangue and thus prevent it from reporting to the concentrate. These high depressant dosages can, however, have a negative effect on the recovery of valuable minerals present in the ore by reducing the stability of the froth. In order to counterbalance the effects of depressant addition, frothers are added. It is, however, preferable to maintain independent control over bubble size and froth stability which is difficult to achieve with only one frother. An alternative strategy is, to use a blend of frothers, e.g. a weaker frother in combination with a stronger frother. Such a system allows an additional degree of freedom: changing the ratio of the two frothers, that would provide more independent control of bubble size and froth stability. This study demonstrates, through the use of batch flotation tests, how blending low molecular weight alcohols with commercially available frothers impact the solids and water recovery, as well as the valuable mineral recovery and concentrate grade in different PGM ores. Higher water and solids recoveries together with higher valuable mineral recoveries (>90% copper and >70% nickel) were obtained from tests using frother blends.

The ore of Sarcheshmeh copper deposit that has been located in the south ?east of Iran, contains four type of rock that they have their specific hardness and strength according to their alteration type and mineralization. Blasting of these various types of mine rocks prepares various types of size for the product of mine as the feed of concentration. Along the crushing of this feed a few factors effect on the efficiency of the crushing unit. The aim of this project has been the consideration of the effect of ore size on the efficiency of crushing unit. For this investigation along the year 2000 A.D., six sample from feed and six sample from product of crushing unit have been prepared. The results of the screen analyze of these samples has shown that the size of feed has been lesser than the primary plan and the size rate of the product has been bigger than the primary plan. Also in this research the effect of feed size on the quality of product size has been considered.

First, a definition: “an explosive is called a permissible explosive when it is similar in all respects to the sample that passed certain tests by the national Bureau of Mines, and when it is used in accordance with the conditions prescribed by that bureau. * This was the definition as stated in Miners’ Circular No. 2,” published by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1911, and it is still applicable today. Of course there have been changes over the years, with the name “MSHA Permitted Explosive” now the legal terminology since January 1989, but the old 1911 circular still tells us what the material is. Note that the definition doesn’t even specifically state “coal mining.” A permissible can be required in guy underground operation that is deemed to have a gas or dust hazard, although in 1911 it was certainly meant to refer only to coal.

"Complexity in soil-foundation interaction and subsoil nonlinear behavior cause difficulties and uncertainties in evaluating the actual values of foundation design factors such as settlement. The acquired continuous records of Cone Penetration Test (CPT) can be used to determine the soil profile and characteristics those are applicable in the geotechnical design. In this paper, it has been attempted to present a new non-linear stress-strain approach to estimate the foundations settlement by using CPT data in the form of soil behavior classification charts. This new approach is based on Janbu method (1960s and also 1998). Instead of using fixed and constant values for stress exponent (j) and modulus number (m), continuous coefficient variations can be used. The proposed approach also can be used as a new method to predict pile group settlement. A data bank has been compiled containing twenty-two practical case histories to investigate the accuracy of the predictions made by the proposed and available common methods. The comparisons indicate that the proposed approach is relatively able to predict the settlement close to their real values. Therefore, it can be considered as an alternative method based on valuable CPT data and nonlinear stress-strain approach for foundations and pile groups settlement estimation.INTRODUCTIONComplexity in soil behaviour for settlement analysis is the result of non-linear and time dependent stressstrain behaviour of soils, their elasto-plastic performance under loading and unloading situation and also effects of stress history (Holtz et al., 2011; Fellenius, 2015). Hence, many relations and equations have been proposed to predict foundation settlement, where most of them are based on typical different parameters such as soil stiffness (E), foundation width (B), contact pressure (q) and pressure developing in depth (Janbu, 1967 also 1998; Briaud and Gibbens, 1999; Uzielli and Mayne, 2012).The Janbu approach for settlement estimation, proposed by Janbu in the early 1960s, combines the basic principles of linear and non-linear stress-strain behaviour of material. The method is applied to all types of soils. The relation between stress and strain is a function of two non-dimensional parameters which are unique for any soil: a stress exponent, “j”, and a modulus number, “m”. The Janbu relations are derived from the definition of tangent modulus by the following expression:"

"In a continuing program of mapping glacial dispersal trains, near-surface till samples were collected down-ice from a copper-silver-gold prospect at Onaman River, Ontario, and down-ice from the past-producing gold district at Oldham, Nova Scotia. The program is designed to aid exploration by illustrating glacial dispersal from various types of known occurrences and by identifying postglacial processes that control drift composition at a detailed scale.Native gold was mined at Oldham from arsenopyrite-bearing saddle reef quartz veins in a dome in Early Paleozoic slates of the Meguma Group. Gold abundances greater than 10 ppb in till form a dispersal train at least 1900 m long. Gold abundances between 40 and 100 ppb occur in clusters up to 600 m down-ice from gold-bearing bedrock. Anomalous arsenic abundances in till form a broad train 1100 m long that is significantly different in shape from the gold train.At Onaman River, subeconomic amounts of Cu-Ag-Au occur in quartz lenses in Archean mafic volcanic rocks. A dispersal train defined by the distribution of mineralized boulders and increased abundances of Cu, Ag and Zn in till extends 600 m down-ice from mineralized bedrock. Gold abundances between 10 and 70 ppb do not define this dispersal train, but occur instead in clusters 300 to 600 m down-ice from mineralized bedrock. In vertical sections in the upper 2 m of copper-rich till, Au abundances vary sympathetically with Ag and Cu levels; however, there seems to be no preferential site of Au enrichment in the mineral portion of the soil profile.Several of the mineralized boulders at Onaman River are richer in Au and Ag than the mineralized bedrock from which they were derived. Although some of the high Au and Ag assays were caused by biased sampling of sulphide-rich portions of the boulders, many were caused by leaching of sulphide minerals from 'the boulders, which left a limonitic boxwork that is enriched in Au and Ag. A few of the Au-rich boulders may have been derived from an unknown bedrock source."

Toxic substances in On solutions can retard biological leaching of copper sulfide dump ores. On solutions were analyzed for metals, organics, and chloride, and showed inhibitory concentrations of aluminum, manganese, and chloride. Inhibition of bacterial activity by the solid fraction of On solution, with and without the organic constituents, was evaluated. Toxicity to bacterial species was evaluated by monitoring bacterial numbers, pH, Eh, and rates of iron oxidation. The On solution solids were toxic at 50 -60% of their field concentration. Most of the toxicity of the On solution was due to the organic fraction. Different SX reagents show varying degrees of inhibition of T. ferrooxidans. Bacterial inhibitory effects of carriers and lixiviants used in the SX plant should be determined so that entrained SX reagents do not retard biological dump leach systems. The reagents used should be the most cost effective and the least toxic.
