The Akita Hematite Process is currently the only hydrometallurgical iron removal process producing saleable iron by-products in the zinc industry. In this study, McGill University and Akita Zinc Co. have worked together into elucidating the basic precipitation chemistry of the process from the standpoints of hematite product quality and prevailing precipitation kinetics. This work determined that hematite is produced under the applied conditions (T = 195?200oC,PO2 = 103?414 kPa) directly without prior formation of basic ferric sulphate and transformation of the latter to hematite as thought originally. The rate-limiting step responsible for the long retention time (~180 min) was found to be either the re-dissolution of ferrous sulphate according to the batch reactor studies, or the slow hydrolysis of the remaining ferric sulphate according to the continuous reactor studies. Another interesting contrast between the batch and continuous reactor data was the degree of sulphur contamination (1.5 vs. 3.8%, respectively) and the specific surface area of the product (10 vs. 30 m2/g, respectively). These differences in addition to the co-precipitation of SO4-containing phases such as jarosites, alunite, and anhydrite were attributed to the significantly higher supersaturation level prevailing in the industrial continuous autoclaves that yields highly aggregated sub-micron hematite crystallites contaminated with chemisorbed sulphate ions.

Abstract- The large Derni Cu-Co (-Zn) deposit in Qinghai Province exhibits unusual geological features, and its genesis is controversial. Based on previous research and detailed field investigations, petrographic studies of the host volcanic rocks, isotope and trace element geochemistry of the sulfide ore, and comparison with typical ore deposits, this deposit is a VHMS (submarine volcanichosted massive sulfide deposit) type. This argues against previous interpretations of a magmatic or a hydrothermal replacement origin. Systematic rock, mineral and geochemical studies of the host serpentinites of the ore district indicate that the protoliths of several types of serpentinites that are widespread in the ore district are mainly ultramafic volcanic rocks. The mineralization formed within an ultramafic volcanic breccia, or between the breccia and its overlying Mg-rich carbonate rocks and volcanic sedimentary rocks. The ore-forming components were derived mainly from ultramafic rocks and partly from mafic rocks. The ultramafic rocks are MgO-rich, CaO-poor with a high MgO/FeO ratio, and the mafic rocks are rich in Na2O and poor in K2O. The chemical composition of the ultramafic rocks is similar to that of volcanic peridotite, or komatiite. The volcanic rocks that host the Derni deposit are among the most basic host rocks known for VHMS deposits, and the Derni deposit represents the most basic member in the VHMS deposit spectrum.

Blister copper melts of 800 g to 1000 g containing less than 1 wt % S and up to 3 wt % Ni were desulfurized at 1523 K in air or by a pure oxygen jet blown at 75,500 and 1000 cm3/min, from 1 cm above the melt. Rates of desulfurization and oxygen pickup were measured and visible surface phenomena were photographed and videotaped. It was observed that SO2 was evolved from Cu-S melts in a manner reminiscent of the effervescence seen in carbonated drinks. The effervescence lasted up to 20 minutes and resulted in the ejection of material up to a height 50 cm above the melt surface. Sporadic discharge of large bubbles was also observed in a Ni containing melt top-blown with oxygen at 1000 cm3/min. The Cu-S melts top-blown with oxygen experienced faster sulfur elimination as compared to stagnant melts exposed to air and experienced only a single period of turbulent SO2 evolution, which occurred almost immediately after oxygen injection commenced. The Cu-S melts exposed to air experienced multiple episodes of effervescence. The stagnant blister copper melt containing nickel did not exhibit effervescent behaviour and experienced a lower rate of sulfur elimination compared to Cu-S melts tested under similar conditions. The present article examines the role of surface phenomena in determining the observed behaviour.

On the Continent, ferromanganese has been produced in the blast furnace almost continuously since 1876, but little definite information concerning the practice is to be found in technical literature, and almost nothing in the way of a theory of the manganese furnace. In this country, prior to 1904, but one company had attempted its production in a serious way, and none of the operating data or other information from this company has been, or is, available to the public..In the last 5 years, as a result of the restriction of imports, a number of furnaces have been blown in on this alloy, with the result that in 1918 as many as 18 furnaces were in blast. The majority of the men in charge of these furnaces had had little previous experience in such operations; so the Bureau of Mines, in the summer of 1918, undertook the collection of data from ferromanganese furnaces. Operating data were collected by the Bureau from eleven ferromangahese furnaces, which will be referred to throughout this paper as furnaces A, B, C, F, G, I, J, K, L, M, and P; the dimensions of seven of the furnaces are given in Table 1. The theme of this meeting, "Where Do We Go From here'?", appeared rather fitting for the In¬stitute this year because, as most of you know, until only two weeks ago we thought that this is the last time we will be able to meet at the Colorado Hotel, which has been the favorite spot of most members. Fouling of activated carbon by different organic species is a great concern in carbon in pulp and carbon in leach circuits. The rate of gold adsorption onto activated carbon from synthetic gold solutions which contained different amounts of potassium ethyl xanthate (PEX), potassium isobutyl xanthate (PIBX), and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were evaluated through batch adsorption tests. The results of these experiments showed that the gold sorption rate rapidly decreases by increasing the concentration of collectors including PIBX and PEX up to 20 mg/L and at higher concentrations, the kinetic rate constant (i.e., k value) gradually leveled off to 53 h-1 for PIBX, which is 46% lower than the 99 h-1 for PEX. At low concentrations of up to 15 mg/L of MIBC, a gradual decrease of the rate constant was observed, while at higher concentrations, the decrease was found to be more pronounced. The gold loading capacity and the rate of gold adsorption onto activated carbon from a gold cyanidation pulp in the presence of flotation reagents were also evaluated. The results of these experiments showed that the flotation reagents have no significant effect on the gold loading capacity of activated carbon at prolong adsorption period, meanwhile the rate of gold adsorption continuously decreases by increasing the concentration of flotation reagents in the leaching solution.

Internal textures of manganese nodules from Clarion-Clipperton zone of northeastern Pacific Ocean are classified into five textural zones: columnar-textured layered zone, cuspate-textured layered zone, cuspate-textured massive zone, cuspate-textured porous zone and massive- textured massive zone. Vernadite is the main constituent mineral in the columnar- and cuspate-textured layered zone. Buserite sometimes occurs in the cuspate-textured layered zone. The cuspate-textured massive zone is mainly composed of buserite. Todorokite is also associated with buserite in the massive-textured porous zone, where cuspates and globes are partially replaced by massive texture. In the massive-textured massive zone, todorokite, buserite and birnessite occur together. The analyzed elements of all zones are also classified into four elemental groups by the cluster analysis of correlation coefficients: Mn group, Cu-Ni-Mg group, Fe group and Si group. Mn group consists of Mn and K. Cu-Ni-Mg group consists of Cu, Ni, Zn, Mg and/or Ca, Na. Fe group consists of Fe, Co, Ti and/or Ca, P. Si group consists of Si and Al. Each textural zone is composed of three or four elemental groups. These four elemental groups are correlated with mineral composition, such as, Mn group with todorokite, Cu-Ni-Mg group with buserite, Fe group with Co-bearing iron-oxyhydroxide minerals, and Si group with silicates.

The rapid rise of industrial Los Angeles to international prominence has been accompanied by the natural corollary - a record influx of population - together with greatly increased production and fabrication of steel and nonferrous and light metals; industrial mineral processing; and high consumption of fuel oil, gasoline, and chemicals. These have resulted in the release of hundreds of tons of metallurgical and mineral dusts, fumes, and gases into the atmosphere daily. Los Angeles County, intrinsically, is no worse than other industrial centers in respect to the generation of atmospheric contamination. It is, in fact, more fortunate in that no coal is used, and it has no great primary metallurgical industries comparable to those of Chicago and Pittsburgh. Meteorologic and topographic peculiarities of the area, however, which result in poor drainage of the polluted air away from the Los Angeles Basin, serve periodically to greatly increase the intensity and frequency of industrial smog visitations. This combination of intense industrialization, population influx, climate, and topography has made mandatory control of air pollution necessary. The nonferrous pyrometallurgical industry of Los Angeles has three rather unusual characteristics that contribute to its difficulties in developing suitable fume control: It consists of a multiplicity of relatively small establishments subject to wide Variations in products and operating schedules; operations are largely of the secondary or reclaiming nature and, therefore, often work dirty scrap metals; and, unfortunately, much of the industry is concentrated, to a considerable extent, near the center of the city. A difficulty inherent in most nonferrous foundries, including the many brass-works melting alloys containing zinc, is the high volatility of zinc and the extremely small mean particle size of the resulting zinc oxide fume.

Water management at a tailings storage facility (TSF) presents one of the major risks to the safe performance of the facility. International and domestic dam safety guidelines assess a dam’s hazard category based on the consequences of a dam failure and the subsequent downstream damage to the environment and communities.Often a rigorous risk assessment is undertaken during the design stages to identify and control hazards associated with water management through life-of-mine (LOM) phases. However, as experienced during the recent downturn in commodity prices, early closure of a mine can occur rapidly and unexpectedly. Although guidelines such as the Australian National Committee on Large Dams Incorporated (ANCOLD) recommend that one of the key objectives of integrated TSF planning is to ‘plan all phases of a tailing dam’s life to ensure adequate storage capacity including early closure ’ (Australian National Committee on Large Dams Incorporated (ANCOLD), 2012) this is often overlooked by owners who are focused on fulfilling the mine’s potential and early closure is not on their radar.CITATION:Ind, M J, Rynhoud, M and Brand, K, 2016. The method of feeding blast-furnaces to be described below is simply the application of well-known principles, and an attempt to carry that application to its logical conclusion. It does not involve radical changes in equipment, nor does it require unusual skill on the part of the furnaceman. In fact, much of its value lies in its very simplicity. Before giving details of the method it will be well to consider briefly the conditions under which it was used at the Nickelton plant of the British America Nickel Corporation, in the Sudbury district, before that plant closed down. The Sudbury nickel ore consists chiefly of pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite in a gangue of norite or greenstone. The proportions of sulphide and gangue vary widely in different mines, the former constituting about 45 per cent of the total in the British America sorted ore. The gangue is fairly uniform in analysis, carrying about 55 per cent Si02, 18 per cent A120 3, 13 per cent FeO and smaller quantities of CaO, MgO, Na20 and K20. The ore has been frequently described as refractory, a word which seems suitable when one considers the many unsuccessful attempts to smelt it pyritically, as well as the high percentage of coke normally used at all the plants in the district.

This paper documents a process of data analytics and machine learning applied to coalmine roof convergence data. It follows a publication documenting the formation of the database. For each set of analyses Python scripts were utilised to extract data from an SQL database, with subsequent analyses also executed in Python, utilising open-source tools such as scikit-learn. Preliminary analyses with classic machine learning algorithms included multiple logistic regression, K-nearest neighbours, decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, kernel support vector machine, artificial neural network (ANN), naïve Bayes and multiple linear regression. Results indicated that relationships were complex and non-linear, with the artificial neural network most suitable. An ANN model was then refined through a standard process of hyperparameter optimisation and data augmentation to arrive at a final model. Due to the black box nature of the ANN further insight into how the parameters interacted was sought and found with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP values). SHAP values utilise Game Theory, where each input parameter or feature is a ‘player’ while the data set is the ‘team’. The SHAP value is the impact of each player on the target value, essentially establishing the contribution of each input parameter. The results from all analyses are delivered in the paper, together with insights, applications, strengths, and limitations of the methodology.

ALTHOUGH Cerro de Pasco was well known since the early sixteen hundreds as one of the major silver districts of the Andes, its development on a modern scale did not occur until the first decade of the present century when a syndicate organized by James B. Haggin initiated the enterprise that eventually grew into the complex and widespread operations of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation. Options on a few claims in Cerro de Pasco that had been brought to New York in 1900 came to the attention of A. W. McCune, a mining man from Salt Lake City, who took them to Haggin and soon succeeded in interesting that creative mining financier in the possibilities of the district. James MacFarlane, an engineer well known to both Haggin and McCune, was sent to Peru early in 1901 to make the initial examinations which promptly led to acquisition of a substantial group of claims in the heart of the mineralized area. A syndicate to which Haggin turned over his rights was organized on Feb. 26, 1902 to provide the necessary funds. The original members were J. B. Haggin, who retained a 34 per cent interest, Edward H. Clark (for Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, the widow of Haggin's old associate, George Hearst), H. McK. Twombly, H. C. Frick, D. O. Mills, and J.P. Morgan.

At 5:50 am on October 1, 1992, the new $800 million Pittsburgh International Airport Midfield Terminal opened its gates to the world after five years of construction and more than 24 years of planning. Despite numerous design changes, this massive project was completed on time and substantially within budget. The importance of this airport to Allegheny County and the Pittsburgh region was recognized 24 years earlier by Allegheny County Commissioners Tom Foerster and the late Leonard Staisey. Staisey and Foerster established a program to acquire land for the "Airport of the Future".

In mining coal, the Nation's principal mineral fuel, loss of life has been much lower recently than in earlier years when coal mining contributed so heavily to the industrial-accident death toll in the United States. Particularly notable has been the relatively small number of deaths during the past few years compared with the number that occurred 20 or 30 years ago. Reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, covering all commercially operated mines that were active during all or any part of the calendar year 1935, showed that accidents during that year had resulted in the loss of 1,242 lives. This death toll, although regrettable, represents a material improvement over the industry's experience during most years prior to 1935, and especially over the industry's worst year, 1907, when 3,242 men were killed. Fewer lives were lost in 1933, when 1,064 men were killed at work, than during any year for which complete figures are available.

The work presented in this paper investigates the influence of non-ideal detonation characteristics related to the blasthole diameter, base emulsion sensitivity (micro-balloon sensitised versus unsensitised) and percent emulsion on the explosive shock energy available to break rock using ANFOemulsion blends. A series of theoretical equal powder factor bench blasting patterns with hole diameters of 127mm (5”), 140mm (5.5”), 152mm (6”) and 165mm (6.5”) are compared to assess the non-ideal confined shock-state work energies. The Non-Ideal Shock Energy Factor (NSEF), which is the available shock energy per cubic meter of blasted material (MJ/m3) or kilocalories per cubic yard (kcal/yd3), is used to compare the different blasting patterns charged with a range of ANFO-emulsion blends from zero to 50% emulsion.

This is one of a series of reports describing investigations made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide basic information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and other agencies concerned with the planning of power and other water developments in the Missouri River Basin. This report contains only such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. Special precautions have been taken not to reveal any information or data considered to be confidential. The field investigations for this report were made during the fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all of the known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic (industrial) mineral deposits within Judith Basin County were investigated. Most of the mines and prospects have been inactive for many years; most of the old underground mine workings now are inaccessible or only partly accessible. Consequently, much of the information on many of the mines and prospects necessarily has been obtained from available U. S. Government and State publications and from owners and local residents.

Research workers From the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives in Pittsburgh, Pa., on January 22, 1975, to discuss the results of research under the Bureau of Mines Noise Control Program. The program, aimed at reducing noise in mines, is functionally divided into three major areas: Instrumentation, personal protection, and noise abatement. This proceedings contains the opening remarks to the seminar and seven technical presentations based on various aspects of noise abatement and control.

The Government of New South Wales has granted approval for Hunter Valley Aluminium Pty., Ltd" and Alcan Australia Ltd. to proceed with the building of an aluminum smelter at Lochinvar and the expansion of a smelter at Kurri Kurri. Construction of the smelters is expected to start as soon as the consortium is finalized in early 1982. The smelters are part of a plan to increase Australia's aluminum capacity fivefold to 1.5 million tons by the mid-1980's. CHILE Construction of a $61 million lithium carbonate plant in northern Chile will be started in early 1983 by Sociedad Chilena del Litio Ltdao Production is scheduled to begin in 1984 with an initial capacity of 6,350 tons of lithium carbonate produced from a brine deposit. The firm is owned 55% by Foote Mineral Company, of Exton, Pennsylvania, and 45% by Corporacion de Fomento de la Produccion-CORFO.

Robert C. Horton was sworn in as the new Director of the Bureau of Mines on October 13 in Washington. Horton, 54, was director of the Geology Division of the Bendix Field Engineering Corporation's operations in Grand Junction, Colorado, before being nominated by - it Reagan for this position. A geological engineer, he has been associated with the mining industry in the West for over 35 years. Legislation to expand the Defense Production Act for 1 year until September 30, 1982, was signed by the President on September 30. The Administration had requested, steel a 5-year extension, but the Congress chose to spend another year considering proposed revisions. The Act, among other things, authorizes the allocation of strategic materials for defense purposes and allows incentives including floor prices and Government financing to encourage domestic mineral projects.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the effects of two iron-based fuel additives on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of engines used in underground mines. One additive, ferrous picrate, did not measurably affect exhaust emissions. This report is mainly about a ferrocene-based additive that reduced DPM between 4 and 45 pet., depending on engine operating conditions. The report concludes that the DPM reductions were caused by the catalytic oxidation properties of a ferric oxide coating that developed inside the engine's combustion chamber. The ferric oxide coating also decreased gas-phase hydrocarbons and O2, but it increased CO2 and NOx, The increase in NOx, of about 12 pet, is considered the only adverse effect of the ferrocene-based fuel additive. The results suggest that the effectiveness of ferrocene was partially offset by increased sulfates because of the high-sulfur fuel used. Recommendations for continuing fuel additive research are presented.
