Inco flash smelting blows industrial oxygen, dried Cu"Fe-S concentrate, Si02 flux and recycle materials horizontally into a hot (-1500 K) furnace. Once in the furnace, the oxygen reacts with the concentrate by Reactions 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 to give: (a) liquid matte, 55 to 60 mass%Cu (b) liquid slag, 1 to 2 mass% Cu (c) off gas, 60 to 75 volume % S02. The matte is tapped into ladles and sent to converting, Fig. 1.3. The slag is tapped into ladles, and sent to a stockpile; with or without a Cu-from-slagremoval step. The off gas is water-quenched, cleaned of dust and sent to a sulfudc acid plant. The [nco flash furnace is also used to recover Cu from molten recycle converter slag. The slag is poured' into the furnace via a steel chute and water-cooled door, Fig. 3.1. In 2000 there are five Inco flash furnaces in operation: at Almalyk, Uzbekistan (Ushakov, et at. 1975); Hayden, Arizona (Marczeski and Aldrich 1986); Hudey. New Mexico (Belew and Partelpoeg, 1993); and Sudbury, Ontario (two furnaces, Carr etal, 1997, Humphris et ai, 1997; Molino et ai, 1997). The Almalyk, Hayden and Hurley furnaces smelt Cu-Fe-S concentrates. The Sudbury furnaces smelt Ni-Cu-Co~Fe-S concentrates'to produce -45% Ni+Cu+Co matte and -1% Ni+Cu+Co slag.

Multiple drill sections through many of the numerous breccia pipes in the American Eagle copper deposit at Copper Creek, Arizona, have been evaluated by means of alteration and geochemical data. Contoured plots indicate vertically plunging, concentric, cylindrical shells of alteration and mineralized rock that are similar in structure, geometry, magnitude and petrology to the San Manuel-Kalamazoo Deposit, located about 14 miles to the southwest. Both deposits are similar in dimension and consist of multiple, irregular, rod-shaped injections of porphyry into a granodiorite host. Analogous to the San Manuel-Kalamazoo Deposit, most of the porphyry plugs are oriented parallel to the cylindrical axis of the "ore shell". A continuously mineralized, elliptical shell, inferred from deep drilling, is capped by a flatter zone of copper mineralization. Above this flat zone, copper-bearing fluids were channeled upward along conduits that correspond with quartz-sericite "breccia pipes". At depth, zones of sericite and K-feldspar alteration products exhibit conformable relationships with the copper deposition. A "bullet-shaped" ore shell, with a nearly vertical axis, is proposed to explain the conformable zones of altered and mineralized rock. The "nose" or top of the "bullet" is 1800 to 2300 feet below the surface, and structurally controlled in part by steeply dipping Hi and ENE faults. If correct, this model suggests that the vertical ore shell may extend to great depth.

The 81 st Regular Meeting and convention was called to order by the President, Charles W. Margolf at 9:00 a.m. Monday, July l, 1985 in the Silverton Room of Tamarron, a resort hotel near Durango, Colorado. President Margolf welcomed the members and others in attendance to the convention and noted his theme of "Make It Happen!" He introduced those present of the 1985-86 Board of Directors and Officers who were elected by the Board of Directors at their Annual Meeting June 29. They were: Arthur K. Neill, President; Bernard Bernstrom, President-Elect; Loren V. Linville, Convention Liaison Officer; Vice Presidents Douglas J. Hammer of Colorado, C. Joe Presley of Montana, Alva L. The research presented here is part of a project to quantify the differences in the mechanical excavatability of rocks in dry and water-saturated conditions. A series of full-scale laboratory linear rock cutting tests were carried out with a long-bladed single disc cutter on dry and water-saturated sandstone blocks. The muck collected from the cutting tests was analyzed to establish a link with the specific energy (SE) of the operation. The coarseness index (CI), a non-dimensional parameter, was found to be a useful indicator of the relative efficiency of the cutting operation. An inverse relationship of the form SE = k CI-n was observed between SE and CI. The power n of the relationship for both dry and saturated rock was much lower than found in previous studies. The exponent n is believed to be dependent on the strength of the rock and the cutter type used. Although the average CI was lower for saturated rock than for dry rock, at the same time, saturated rock cutting was found to be less energy-intensive (in terms of SE) than dry rock cutting. Moderate correlation exists between the production rate or yield and the SE of the cutting operation for both dry and saturated rock, which can provide some useful information about the field production rate, discounting the effect of discontinuities in the rock mass.

Data from autogenous and semi-autogenous tests in a 1.67m diameter mill have been analysed in terms of a new model for rock abrasion. This model defines specific rate as the rate of production of fines (material less than 13mm) per unit mass of rock, where the term “rock” is applied to all ore pieces of ore coarser than the grate size. In most cases, an allowance for preliminary rounding and cleavage was made. A method has been developed to analyse steady-state data, using piecewise fitting to the cumulative size distributions. The model was compared to the well-established models, which are based on the population balance method. The specific rate increased for all rock sizes as the volume of 100mm balls in the mill was increased. Tests using a coarser feed and smaller balls provided further evidence that once rocks are rounded, abrasion is due to localised surface damage, caused by impacts, rather than rotational shear. An allowance for rapid rounding of jagged rocks, followed by less rapid abrasion of rounded pebbles was also tested, but the analysis was not conclusive. The average specific rate is a useful measure of the capacity of a primary mill. The effect of power intensity (kW/t of ore) was also investigated as a means of extrapolating the pilot-plant data to large production mills.

Few studies have specifically measured and documented the large-scale loading behavior and durability of ventilation stoppings to mining induced movements, particularly from longwalls. Ventilation stoppings are more commonly the concern of ventilation engineers, and ventilation, topping response to ground movement has only been documented in an incidental manner. This paper presents the investigations of underground measurements that have been conducted to determine the loading response of stoppings constructed from lightweight aggregate concrete masonry units (CMU). These investigations have produced some interesting results that may prove beneficial, not only for developing and assessing alternative stopping construction techniques, but also for designing and selecting standard construction methods for use in varying mining conditions. For instance, the interface friction that results from wedging a CMU stopping during construction plays a substantial role in its ability to resist both lateral and vertical loads. Although they are not intended for ground support, the study showed that block stoppings can resist vertical loads of at least 2,700 to 3,000 kN. Asymmetric loading of a stopping may result in localized failure of blocks within a stopping, which, depending on the severity, can be a precursor of impending stopping failure. In addition to measurement results and implications, the paper will also present details of field measurement methods used to assess stopping response. No presente trabalho, analisaram-se três amostras metálicas ferrosas provenientes da Real Fábrica de Ferro de Ipanema (RFFI) outras três do sitio arqueológico de Sardinha (SAS) em busca de uma assinatura química dos processos produtivos destes objetos com base num modelo de regressão linear dos resultados de análise química de inclusões não metálicas proposto por Dillmann et al. [1]. Foram usadas técnicas de caracterização microestrutural associadas com microanálise EDS (Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) destas inclusões. Com os resultados de microanálise, foram construídos gráficos de relações entre os principais constituintes destas inclusões (%FeO versus %SiO2, %SiO2 versus %Al2O3, %Al2O3 versus %MgO e %CaO versus % K2O). Utilizou-se, então, a técnica de regressão linear (com reta passando e sem passar pela origem) para cada uma destas relações de modo a obter e avaliar o valor do coeficiente de determinação linear R2. Aplicou-se, ainda, o teste de t de Student para avaliar a hipótese de “reta passando forçosamente pela origem”, como proposto por Dillmann et al. [1]. Não foi possível obter a assinatura química dos processos produtivos, visto que a análise estatística dos dados mostrou uma incoerência no modelo utilizado por Dillmann et al. [1], que assumia que a regressão linear passava pela origem dos eixos.

Apresentam-se o processo e o protótipo de forno para a produção de ferro gusa por redução carbotérmica estimulada por micro-ondas de minério de ferro, na forma de pelotas auto-redutoras. O forno de redução com potência regulável de até 15 kW de micro-ondas de 2.45 GHz foi especialmente projetado e construído para este processo. A estrutura do forno é em aço inoxidável e utiliza três geradores de micro-ondas focados para o centro de um aplicador cilíndrico. Com esta configuração conseguiu-se produzir um campo eletromagnético de alta densidade energética. A carga de pelotas auto-redutoras, com massa em torno de 20 g foi reduzida em um cadinho de carbeto de silício. A montagem do forno dispõe de uma balança elétrica adaptada para suportar o cadinho de redução. O presente forno dispõe de controle e medida da potência fornecida e refletida, permitindo medir a energia de micro-ondas efetivamente aplicada à carga. Esta característica permitiu realizar balanços de massa e de energia além de determinar a evolução da taxa de reação através da medida contínua da massa das pelotas sob redução, ao longo do tempo de processamento. Obtiveram-se curvas cinéticas de redução carbotérmica de minério de ferro incentivada por micro-ondas e de seu consumo de energia durante o processo.

A good understanding of the hardness of ore being handled and processed in a mining operation can significantly improve operational efficiencies by providing valuable data to support decision-making through the mining value chain (drilling, blasting, comminution). This study presents the results from the application of Machine Learning (ML) to predict rock hardness using various geophysical and geochemical features. Core samples from a mine site were logged using a multi-sensor core logging system. Measurements including ultrasonic p-wave and s-wave velocity, elemental concentration via portable XRF, and Leeb Hardness, were measured every 2 cm along the length of the core. The ML model was set up to predict the Leeb Hardness using the elemental concentrations and ultrasonic velocities as predictors. The Leeb Hardness values were grouped into three bins and used as a classification target for the ML models. Various ML models, including linear regression, support vector machines, decision tree, XGBoost, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Naïve Bayes were tested. The model performance demonstrated that the Random Forest and XGBoost models produced the highest accuracy of 74-91%. Random forest and XGBoost were then selected to perform regression models to estimate a Leeb hardness value rather than a hardness class. These models were able to estimate the Leeb hardness value by 4.57-4.87 % error.

Hydriding properties and crystal structure of a Ti-V- Mn solid solution alloy have been studied by P-C isotherm measurements and neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. The absorption P-C isotherm at 298K shows two plateau regions at 0.01MPa and 1MPa. The X-ray diffraction data have demonstrated that three phases with a BCC, a pseudo-cubic FCC and an FCC structure form subsequently with increase of the hydrogen content. Crystal structure of the latter two phases has been determined by Rietveld refinement of the neutron diffraction data. The FCC phase is the di-hydride of CaF2 type with hydrogen occupation in the T sites. The pseudo-cubic FCC phase is the mono-hydride of NaCl-type with hydrogen occupation in the 0 sites, which has not been reported so far. The lattice constants of the mono-hydride (Ti1.0V1.1Mn0.9)H_2.7 are a'=0.407 nm for two axes and c'=0.390 nm for the third axis. The a'axis is shorter by 4% than the c'axis. This pseudo-cubic FCC lattice is formed by contraction of 5% of the a axis and expansion of about 30% of the c axis from the original BCC lattice.

In this work the electrochemical combustion of dissolved organic species in a single compartment cell containing a titanium mesh cathode and a boron doped diamond anode has been studied, The organic molecules involved were complexing agents such as EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) or NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid) used in metal plating shops and bright nickel plating bath additives, From batch experiments, it is shown that complete decomplexing of EDTA and NIA is feasible. Complete TOC (Total Organic Carbon) removal from solutions containing 0.01 M EDTA, 0.02 M NTA and bright nickel plating bath additives could also be achieved. Recycling experiments show that decomplexing of EDTA and NTA solutions can be obtained at an average electrical energy input of ~20kWh.kg-1 of complexing agent. Decomplexing rates of respectively 3.l3 mmol.Ah-1 for EDTA and NTA have been obtained, The Instantaneous Current Efficiency (ICE) was 71% for EDTA and 95% by NTA, Simultaneous recovery of Cu from a 0.01 M Cu-EDTA solution has also been evaluated. A solution (1.8 dm3) containing 0.01 M EDTA and 528 ppm of Cu was treated in a single compartment cell at a current density of 2 A.dm-2. 73% of the TOC could be removed and a final copper concentration of 8 ppm was obtained.

Os aços inoxidáveis superduplex (AISD) aliam boas propriedades mecânicas e resistência à corrosão, possuindo um vasto campo de aplicação na indústria petroquímica. Geralmente, os reparos dos equipamentos são realizados por soldagem, sendo importante a seleção de parâmetros. É de suma importância a obtenção do teor adequado de ferrita no metal de solda, sendo que a variação da energia de soldagem pode influenciar de forma direta a microestrutura e resistência à corrosão. Logo, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos provenientes da variação de parâmetros de soldagem nas características do AISD UNS S32750. Foi avaliado o balanço de fases, relacionando esse efeito com a resistência à corrosão. Foram realizadas soldagens em chapas pelo processo TIG autógeno em 3 níveis de energia de soldagem (5, 10 e 18 kJ/cm), variando a corrente e velocidade de soldagem, de modo a obter 5 condições e a possibilidade de analisar as variáveis-resposta com essas variações isoladamente. A análise da microestrutura foi realizada por microscopia ótica e o teor de ferrita foi quantificado pela utilização de duas técnicas: ferritoscópio e quantificação por imagem. Foram realizados ensaios de temperatura crítica de pite para análise de resistência à corrosão. Concluiu-se então que o acréscimo de energia pela variação da velocidade de soldagem acarretou no aumento no teor de ferrita, ocasionando a redução da temperatura crítica de pite, sendo estes observados na fase ferrítica.

Standard metering of electric arc furnaces usually uses root mean square (RMS) or true root mean square (TRMS) measurements for determining power. Only sinusoidal signals are accurately described by RMS meters, and dc or high-frequency components normally are lost in standard TRMS metering. This can lead to inaccuracies when electrical signals are not sinusoidal, contain dc components, or include fast risetime perturbations, as is the case with the electric signals from an electric arc furnace. Electric arc furnace electrical waveforms, observed in research carried out by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, show high-frequency components and significant deviations from sinusoids. These perturbations and distortions make metering difficult for standard power meters. The inaccuracies in metering can cause further problems if those sensors are used in control systems. For control strategies requiring rapid response, any averaging scheme loses information that can be used in control decisions. In order to obtain better signals for both monitoring and control, a study of instantaneous, RMS, and TRMS power monitoring devices was conducted. From this study it was concluded that precision integrated circuits should be used to obtain instantaneous power with a bandwidth of at least 25 kHz. The information from these devices is more representative than that of standard meters and can be used in predictive control.

"The relevancy of complex minerals treatment is constantly increasing taking into account mineral resources depletion. Different refractory ores and concentrates, oxidized and polymetallic ores, as well as metallurgical products (slags) can be assigned to such mineral type. The treatment of such products via conventional flowsheets requires considerable capital and operational costs and does not always provide high recovery level of valuable components into a saleable product. Therefore, considerable amount of ores and metallurgical products are not treated, or treated inefficiently. One of the most promising approaches that allows economic treatment of refractory products is their ultrafine grinding down to 5-20 µm with subsequent processing or hydrometallurgy. Horizontal bead mills - the IsaMillTM, developed by Xstrata Technology, received their wide application in mining industry. Standard testing is performed under laboratory conditions in an M4 IsaMillTM (volume - 4 liters) to define the parameters of fine grinding. This mill completely simulates the operation of full scale industrial mills up to 50 m3 in volume (up to 8000 kW motor). The paper describes fine grinding technology performed in bead mills, and the importance of testing according to a certified method for industrial equipment selection. The paper contains description of promising directions of fine grinding technology application for several projects in Russia and Kazakhstan."

Current regulations regarding the landfill disposal of asbestos containing wastes are inadequate to ensure there are no ground water or airborne emissions. Accordingly, there is growing recognition that asbestos wastes can only be safely disposed of by using techniques that destroy the hazardous fibres. An innovative high-temperature plasma arc technology (The MAGRAM Process) is being developed for the recovery of magnesium metal from asbestos together with supplementary magnesia containing feedstock. The furnace will operate in. open bath mode with aluminium and/or ferrosilicon being employed as reductant. An important advantage of the process is that magnesium vapour within the furnace will be generated close to atmospheric pressure rather than at reduced pressure under which existing processes operate. Thermodynamic modelling work has been undertaken to define the range of slag composition and furnace temperature under which magnesium production at atmospheric pressure is feasible. The effect of slag chemistry, reductant addition, and temperature on product quality and yield have also been investigated and key aspects have been tested on bench scale. A 300 kW pilot plasma furnace unit has been employed for the treatment of calcined asbestos wastes. Aspects of design and operation of the unit are detailed. For zinc single crystals, xo = 3o, a surface coating raises both the cleavage and yield strengths over a large temperature range. The "brittle temperature," associated with slip after completion of twinning, does not coincide with the point of intersection of the flow and cleavage curves, which is associated with twinning. A surface film has no effect on the brittle temperature, while it lowers the intersection temperature some 20°. For crystals, yn = 83o, a coating decreases the cleavage strength, making it temperature independent, as well as increases the brittle temperature or its equivalent, the intersection temperature, 20°. These observations are described on the basis of a dislocation-pile-up-at-a-barrier model for brittle fracture; in crystals x,, = 3o the number and distribution of twins play a vital role. IN a recent investigation on the effects of solid environments on the brittle fracture of zinc single crystals,' it was demonstrated that the presence of a surface film changes the cleavage strength of these crystals, either increasing or decreasing it, depending on the crystal orientation. An increase in cleavage strength of some 43 per cent was found for coated crystals oriented x, — 3o K = 28",* while a decrease of 48 per cent was observed with crystals X" = y» — 83". Following the preparation of tantalum oxide and carbide (1) an investigation of the details relating to the production of tantalum metal powder was planned. From the literature (2) it was evident that tantalum could be produced either by reduction of potassium tantalum fluoride with an alkali metal or by electrolysis of a fused salt mixture containing a tantalum compound. The latter method appeared to be the more suitable and, as there was considerable divergence of opinion in the literature as to the nature of the reactions involved, it was decided to study the electrolytic process. The ultimate aim in any case was to produce tantalum pOWder for use in an investigation of the problems relating to the preparation of consolidated tantalum.FACTORS GOVERNING ELECTROLYSISAfter a few preliminary exploratory electrolyses several factors which needed amplification were revealed. These will be mentioned before the details of the electrolysis experiments are given.COMPOSITION OF THE BATHWithout the knowledge gained in the preliminary experiments it would be thought that the best material for the bath would be that one which underwent electrolytic decomposition. Consider what at first appeared the most likely - namely - potassium tantalum fluoride. The melting point of K2TaF7 was determined to be 630°C with volatilization and decomposition taking place at that temperature so that it would not have been very satisfactory.

In world-wide mining circles countries become known by the principal minerals they produce. The production of iron, copper, phosphate and sulphur in the United-States-has-been particularly significant and has provided the base for aggressive developments in heavy industry, agriculture and chemicals. Mention diamonds and gold-and you will think--South Africa; silver-Mexico; nickel and asbestos--Canada. The main purpose of this paper is to point out that potash mast be added to the list of minerals by which Canada is known in the mining World. The potash deposits of western Canada must be classed as a major world source of chemical fertilizer raw material. We believe that they are both the largest and the richest of all known deposits in the world. The most knowledgeable people in the industry avoid making estimates of reserves because even where the arithmetic is correct the total is so large that it appears to be ridiculous. In 1957 Marion Goudie made a carefully qualified estimate of 6 billion tons of recoverable potash above 3,500 ft, and grading 25 per cent K20 or better. This figure can now be increased by the amounts available through solution mining. No one has bothered to estimate how much this is because it is so large that the actual amount is not significant.
