This paper presents results from a two month pilot evaluation of EMEW® technology at CODELCO Radomiro Tomic, in Chile. A prime focus in the test programme was to assess the technology?s capabilities to recover high quality copper from the Radomiro Tomic electrowinning tank house bleed stream. The EMEW® cell developed by Electrometals Technologies Ltd. tolerates substantially higher levels of contaminants than those found in conventional tankhouse, operating at high current densities while maintaining high cathode copper quality all the way down to low copper concentrations. To maintain high copper purity in a copper electrowinning (or electro-refining) tank house, a continuous bleed of solution must be taken from the tank house inventory to prevent build-up of contaminants, and resulting degradation in cathode quality. In an SX-EW operation, this bleed stream is normally recycled back to the solvent extraction circuit, but is occasionally sent to the raffinate pond to re-enter the leach circuit. Return of the bleed stream to the solvent extraction circuit creates a continually recycling load of copper in solution, which may reduce overall plant capacity and expansion potential. Return to the leach circuit has a similar effect, and methods to reduce its impact are always under consideration. The use of the EMEW® technology allows for direct and efficient recovery of near 100% of the contained copper instead of recycling. Tests were run at ambient temperature on bleed electrolyte using current densities which varied between 250 and 1100 amps per square meter, with copper concentrations between 38 and 1 g/l. A profile of maximum allowable current density with respect to concentration was developed, showing that high grade copper can be obtained at all levels of concentrations tested, by choosing an appropriate current density and electrolyte flow rate. The results of this programme show that the recirculating bleed electrolyte from an SX-EW operation can be converted into an expansion in copper production at a comparatively low investment cost.

"The depletion of the high-grade chromite ores and the inefficiency of the gravimetric methods to process fine particles has shifted the industrial and research interest from gravimetric separation methods to flotation. However, the response of the minerals to various flotation schemes is not clearly established. In this work, the physicochemical behavior of chromite and olivine is studied using a fatty acid collector.The minerals used were from Vourino area (Kozani, Northern Greece). Macroscopically pure samples of chromite and olivine were selected by hand picking, crushed and subsequently ground to the required size. Each sample was then submitted to panning and magnetic separation for the removal of impurities. The mineralogical and chemical analysis of the purified samples revealed the following: a) The purity of chromite was 95% while the minor constituent was mainly magnetite. Its chemical analysis was: 12.50% Fetot, 2.50% SiO2, 54,54% Cr2O3, 9.31% Al2O3, 0.47% CaO, 13.10% MgO. These analyses show that Cr3+ has been substituted by Fe3+ and Al3+ as well as Fe2+ has been significantly substituted by Mg2+. b) Forsterite is the main constituent of olivine either as pure forsterite (Mg2SiO4), which is the prevailing form, or as iron-forsterite [(Mg,Fe)2SiO4] in less amount. Chrysotile, which belongs to the serpentine group, was also detected at a percentage of 10-15%. The chemical analysis of olivine was: 36.90% SiO2, 0,53% Cr2O3, 7,43% Fe2O3, 0.72% Al2O3, 0.91% CaO, 47.00% MgO, 6.02% LOI.The electrokinetic behavior of the minerals was studied in a electrophoretic mass transport equipment Model 1202 of Micromeritics. The reagents used were sodium hexa-metaphosphate of commercial grade and sodium oleate."

Lunt, York, Montana* :—Two years ago I visited the region described by Mr. Jennings and assisted in the examination of a somewhat similar group of deposits in the White Mesa sandstone on the Navajo Indian Reservation, 125 miles north of Flagstaff and 50 miles east of the Kaibab plateau. There, the Triassic red sandstone is less than 200 ft. thick, and is overlain by a stratum from 200 to 250 ft. thick of white sandstone, which gives the name of " White Mesa" to that locality. The white sandstone shows all phases of crossbedding in great complexity, and evidently marks a period of oscillation and subsidence of the water, or an elevation of the land, at the close of a geological epoch. The prevailing color is white or gray, but occasionally it is red. In structure, it is composed of well-worn grains of quartzsand, from which most of the cementing material has been leached out, leaving it soft and friable. Possibly the cement was ferruginous, as is indicated by occasional traces of red color. The copper-deposits consist of a replacement of the cement of one particular cross-bedded stratum of the sandstone by chrysocolla, having also at times various quantities of tenorite in grains or masses. Some specimens of the ore contain as much as 32 per cent. of copper. Generally the copper-deposits are a few hundred cubic feet in size, and no strict line of demarcation is shown between them and the surrounding sandstone, the bluish-green color of the chrysocolla gradually fading into the white of the sandstone. The ore is apparently associated with small vertical crevices or fissures. Some of the deposits show a distinct vein-structure, while others do not. The origin of the ore is not very clear. Oil production and activity in northern and central Pennsylvania was slightly less in 1939 than in the previous year, but owing to higher average prices 1939 was undoubtedly a better business year. The last quarter showed markedly increased activities throughout all of the Pennsylvania fields. Production, Stocks and Price Storage of Pennsylvania crude oil at pipe lines and refineries totaled 5,413,000 bbl. on Dec. 31, 1938, and declined during the year 1,124,000 bbl. to a total of 4,319,000 bbl. at the end of 1939. The stocks of crude at the end of the year represent the lowest point reached in Pennsylvania-grade crude storage in recent years. Stocks increased slightly during April, May and June, but decreased during all other months of 1939. The Bradford field production within the state of Pennsylvania averaged 35,340 bbl. per day throughout 1939, which represents a decrease of 1419 bbl. a day from the 1938 average. The production in central and southern Pennsylvania increased 1176 bbl. per day, averaging 12,159 bbl. throughout 1939. Table 1 includes annual production for the part of Bradford field situated within the state of Pennsylvania, for central and southern Pennsylvania, and for the entire state of Pennsylvania. A definite segregation of production between the Bradford field and central and southern Pennsylvania is slightly ambiguous because a portion of the oil from the newly discovered Music Mountain pool is included statistically in each area. In all probability the entire increase and some small addition to the production from southern Pennsylvania can be attributed to oil produced from the Music Mountain pool. Within the Bradford field, six price changes occurred throughout the year. At the beginning of 1939 the price of Bradford crude oil was $1.80 per barrel, whereas by the end of the year it had risen to $2.50. The weighted average price for Bradford crude during 1939 was $2.059 per barrel.

"The mill at Noranda Mines Limited, Geco Division in Manitouwadge, Ontario went into production in 1957 treating 3,500 tons per day of copper, zinc, silver, lead ore. It was not until 1964, however, that the zinc concentrate drying plant was constructed. In 1970, milling capacity was increased from 4,000 to 5,000 tons per day. The zinc content of the ore is quite variable so that the tonnage of zinc concentrate dried varies from 200 to 650 tons per day.The drying plant was designed to dry 25 tons of zinc concentrate, dry basis, per hour from an initial moisture of 8.5% to a final moisture of 2%. Major components were selected so that capacity could be increased to 35 tons per hour with minor modifications.The rotary dryer is a Hardinge type ""XH-12"" with a diameter of 80"" and a length of 50 feet. The all welded construction shell is 1/2 inch thick mild steel plate with 3/4"" thick reinforcing bands under the tires arranged for operation at a slope of 1/2 inch to the foot. The 3/8"" x 12"" radial flights are welded to the shell. There are no flights in the last ten feet of the shell in order to reduce dusting. This unit is driven by a 50 HP motor through a Hamilton type CD250 double reduction helical gear speed reducer. The shell speed is 5.8 RPM.The standard Peabody horizontal air heater has a rated capacity of 10,000,000 B.T.U. 's/Hr. The combustion chamber is lined with high temperature refractory brick and is air cooled. The conical outlet section of the air heater is lined with insulating fire-brick. The burner is a type AT wide range mechanical atomizer fired by a type ""CR"" gas-electric ignitor.The Bunker ""C"" fuel is supplied by a Compower duplex pumping, heating and straining unit, including tank hotwell, Powertronic oil line heating system with a 550/24 volt transformer."

CONSIDERING the hazard involved in mining operations, statistics show, that a very small percentage of accidents is chargeable to electricity. These accidents do represent quite a large percentage of those that are preventable and they are the direct result of the introduction, for purely economical reasons, of a dangerous element. The introduction of electricity in mines should decrease the hazard, and in no case should electricity be applied to the mechanical operation of equipment if by so doing the dangers incidental to mining are increased. The greater number of accidents are the result of persons coming in contact with exposed conductors at potentials varying from 250 to 500 volts direct current. The use of alternating current at higher potentials than these is quite common in large mines, but it is very rare that an accident happens from this source. This is explained by the fact that where these high voltages are warranted, proper precautions are taken, and the installations are directed by those who fully appreciate the dangers incidental to the work. Direct current is in much more general use than alternating current because of its adaptability to haulage locomotives and the low cost of installation in small operations. We are, however, coming to a more extended application of alternating current for the operation of mechanical devices used in connection with mining. Our underground direct-current wiring system is an evolution from the surface trolley and feeder systems. This is probably due to the fact that our earlier successful applications were electric locomotives, which required the use of a trolley wire. The trolley current has been almost banished from industrial establishments on the surface because of the hazard involved, yet we use it indiscriminately underground, where the dangers from accidental contact or fire are infinitely greater. This does not mean that the underground trolley systems should be eliminated, but it does imply the proper safeguarding of such equipment as is necessarily a part of the trolley systems.

This report describes three cases of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in a manhole, including one fatality, from CO migrating through soil after nearby use of explosives. A municipal sewer project involved installation of new pipes and manholes. Work of the general construction contractor was interrupted when a subcontractor detonated 265 pounds of nitroglycerin-based explosive 40-60 feet south of the manhole to break up underlying rock. A construction worker who descended into the manhole 45 minutes after the explosion collapsed within minutes, and two co-workers descended into the manhole to rescue him. One rescuer retrieved the unconscious worker, and the other rescuer died in the manhole. All workers had elevated carboxyhemoglobin levels. In the subsequent NIOSH investigation, air monitoring was conducted with real-time instruments, and air samples were collected in Tedlar bags. Laboratory analyses of the bag samples collected near the bottom showed 1905 parts per million (ppm) CO, 19.5% oxygen, and 3% carbon dioxide. Direct reading instruments showed progressively higher concentrations as the sensor was lowered into the manhole. Subsequent chamber tests on sample explosive yielded 27 liters CO per kilogram detonated. Based on this value, the surface blast at the construction site may have produced about 3,250 liters (114.8 cubic feet) CO. The CO in this incident most likely was released from the nearby explosion and migrated through soil and fractured rock into the manhole. The blasting and construction industries should be made aware of this previously unrecognized CO exposure hazard associated with surface blasting. The extent of CO exposure from explosives used in construction is not known, and additional information on the extent of CO exposure must be collected. In addition, confined space entry procedures (including monitoring confined space atmospheres before entry) should be observed; CO monitoring of confined spaces in the presence of blasting can prevent future incidents such as this one.

Report of President The important fact of the year 1916 is that on July 25 contracts were executed by which the American Society of Civil Engineers because an additional Founder Society and arranged to make its permanent home in our building. The contracts provide for the construction of three additional stories to the building, the American Society to pay the cost tip to $250,000, this being considered equivalent to what each other Founder Society had contributed, the American Society to participate in the original Carnegie gift and have an equal share in the property with each other Founder society. The construction of the addition to the building is under way, $62,525.04 having been expended thereon in 1916. It has been found that, clue to war conditions and the advanced price of materials, the cost of the addition will be $300,000. The founder societies have been requested to assume the extra $50,000, one quarter each. This work is in charge of a Building Committee consisting of H. H. Barnes, Jr., Chairman, E. G. Spilsbury, Charles Warren Hunt and Charles F. Rand. At the request of the Founder Societies, important alterations were made in the lecture halls on the fifth floor of the building to make the same suitable for social functions of the societies. The cost, $6,642.08, was advanced by the United Engineering Society but is to be paid eventually by the Founders. The Library of the civil Engineers is being merged with the Library of the United Engineering. Society and the other founder societies. At the present time the membership of the four founder societies is 29,000 and of associate societies 23,000, so that a total of 52,000 engineers now have their headquarters in our building. The value of the real estate now owned by this Society is $1,647,171.16. This sum will be increased at the end of 1917 by the amount of the cost of the addition to the building.

King, Bozeman, Mont.: The form of measuring up ore in sight looks very plausible, as illustrated in the paper of Mr. Emmons, but from my experience of many years of mining in Montana and Nevada, I have found it is very hard to measure up anything nearer than a guess of what you have in sight, except in the case of a true vein, or a flat vein where the boundaries are well defined. I have been interested in several miues with Dr. A. R. Ledoux, and I know that my foreman and myself, going into the mines and using our best judgment, could seldom see more than 30 days' supply actually in sight, and yet we were running from 100 to 250 tons a day, and keeping it up year after year. Prof. John D. Irving, New Haven, Conn.: I understand from Mr. Emmons that this is a method which has been found applicable in the copper-mines in Tennessee, where the record could be made with a good deal of accuracy, and where the work in the mines allowed the necessary development to be done, so that the record could be kept up. I do not think there was any intention in his mind to imply that this was applicable to all cases, especially such as Mr. King has mentioned. President Charles Kirchhoff, New York, N. Y. : I think the point is that the paper impresses the necessity for doing it where the possibilities exist. There has been too little attention given to this very matter, particularly in the United States; but I think our English friends are following it very much more zealously, and the demand for it there is possibly greater than it is here, because English boards of directors handle mines that are often very much further away than our own are, and the English public and the English engineers generally are very much more insistent upon seeing how much longer current dividends are going to last, or current assessments are going to continue.

"The steelmaking industry which uses electric arc furnaces (EAF) generates approximately 250.000 tons of EAF flue dusts annually in Turkey. These flue dusts contain valuable metals such as zinc, iron and lead. For example, if these flue dusts can be treated efficiently, disposal problems certainly decreases and annually almost 40.000-75.000 tons of zinc can be recovered. In this study, powder and pellet forms of EAF flue dusts taken from a steel mill were carbothermally treated in a temperature controlled pilot scale rotary furnace via carbothermal reduction in order to investigate the reduction behavior of Zn and Pb. Temperature (900-1000 and 1100 °C) and time (0-90 minutes) were selected as reaction parameters. The chemical analysis was performed for the sample residues.IntroductionTurkey’s steel production reached to 23.3 million tons in 2006. There are three integrated steel plants of which capacities vary from 0.7 to 3 million tons per year and seventeen EAF steel plants of which capacities vary from 0.06 to 2 million tons per year [1]. When it is considered that more than 74 % of the Turkish steel production is produced by EAF method and approximately 10 - 15 kg of dust is formed per ton of steel during this process, the amount of annual generated EAF dust may be estimated at approximately 0.25 million tons. EAF dust which contains valuable metals such as zinc, lead, iron, cadmium, and chromium, is considered as hazardous waste product in steelmaking industry. If these flue dusts can be treated efficiently, not only the disposal problems certainly decrease, but also annually almost 40.000-75.000 tons of zinc can be recovered. Many studies which exist on recovering of the valuable metals from EAF dust, propose and practice many hydro-metallurgical and pyro-metallurgical treatments [2- 7]. In this study a laboratory scale work were performed to investigate reduction behavior of zinc and lead in EAF dust by carbothermal process in a rotary furnace."

The following article covers the history of a metallurgical campaign, commenced in March, 1905, at the mines of the Socorro Bold Co., in the so-called desert region of Yuma county, Arizona. The results obtained were simply a function of necessity, as will be seen from the description of the local economic conditions and the character of the ores treated. The mines and mill of the Socorro Gold Co. are located near the small village of Harrisburg, about 60 miles from Congress Junction, Ariz., which, at the time this work was undertaken, was the nearest railroad station, and from which all supplies were brought by wagon through the desert, at a cost varying from $10 to $15 per ton in addition to the railroad freights. Wood, the only available fuel, cost $7 per cord. Water for all purposes was pumped to the plant from a well in the valley about 4 miles away. Under the Arizona law, a working-shift is 8 hr. Wages were $6 per day for foremen and mill-men, $4 per day for blacksmiths and engineers, $3.50 per day for miners, and $3 per day for shovelers and trammers. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerale were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was equipped with plates for amalgamation, and three Standard tables for concentration. The tails from the tables mere elevated by a centrifugal pump to a launder, by which they were conveyed to a 60-ton cyanide-mill for further treatment. The cyanide-mill was erected at so great a distance from the stamp-mill that a separate crew of workers and a separate power-plant were necessary. DEFENSE Materials Procurement Agency has been moving rapidly to encourage copper industry expansion programs. Although copper production is at a high level, a shortage exists on a world-wide basis as well as on the domestic scene. Projected expansion programs will not ease this current demand for most of them are 2 to 5 years off. Refining facilities are adequate but there is a shortage of ore and scrap, and it is for this reason that the expansion programs are directed at developing more sources of supply. The domestic expansion programmed thus far and understood to have been arranged with price escalation should the domestic price go to 271/20, were summarized by American Metal Markets as follows (dates of announcement are given in parenthesis: .1-Copper Cities Mining Co.'s, $15,000,000 expansion near Miami, Ariz., to be operating about 1954. DMPA will buy 22,500 tons of copper a year up to a given amount on an agreed price of 23¢ per pound, with some exceptions and depending upon salability at a higher price to other purchasers in the U. S. (September 25th). 2-An RFC loan of $60,000 to North Butte Mining Co. to be paid off on the basis of deliveries at a purchase price of 241/20 per pound (September 25th). 3-A $25,000,000 expansion program by Phelps Dodge to provide 38,000 tons per year by late 1954. DMPA would purchase it at a price of 22¢ per pound up to 112,500 tons providing other purchasers in the U. S. will not pay a higher price (September 26th). 4-Anaconda Copper Mining Co. $40,000,000 expansion in Nevada to provide more than 30,000 (might be increased to 45,000) tons per year. DMPA would purchase the copper at 250 per pound for a limited period of time if it is not salable to industrial users at above this price. Production would start around 1953 (November 14th).

This note describes positive evidence that hydrogen in titanium alloys diffuses under the influence of a thermal gradient. The experiments confirmed the expected similarity of this system to the H-Zr system and produced qualitative information on the magnitude of the heat of transport for hydrogen in titanium alloys. This effect has practical importance in applications where titanium alloys operate in a thermal gradient under conditions such that hydrogen embrittlement may develop within the expected lifetime of the structure, for example in supersonic aircraft service. The theories of thermal-gradient diffusion may be found in recent reviews and experimentation in this field by Shewmon,1 Sawatzky,2 Markowitz,3 and Darken and Oriani.4 The basis for Soret thermal diffusion is the "heat of transport", denoted by Q*. This is an energy term for the amount of heat (energy) transferred by atomic diffusion, and can be either positive or negative signifying a driving force for atomic diffusion to the cooler or hotter region, respectively. Experimentally, Q* is determined by plotting the natural logarithm of the point-to-point concentrations after exposure to a thermal gradient vs the respective point-to-point temperatures in units of the inverse absolute temperature scale. The slope of the straight line is Q*/R, R being the gas constant. For the titanium experiments, specimens (3 by 1 by 1/16 in.) of a) commercially pure titanium, b) the 8 Al-1 Mo-1 V titanium alloy, and c) the 6 A1-4 V titanium alloy were exposed to thermal gradients of 6° to 115°C per in. for 18 days at 250° to 550°C. The temperature gradient was in the direction of the 3-in. dimension. The hydrogen concentrations existing after exposure were determined on sections of the specimens by vacuum extraction. Over the past twenty years people throughout the world, but particularly in the United States, have been taking an increasing interest in the environment, sources and causes of pollution, and pollution abatement. Air quality in the United States has been and continues to be an area of primary emphasis. In 1970, the US Congress passed the Clean Air Act and subsequently revised and strengthened it in 1977 with the issuance of the New Source Performance Standards. The Act has been further strengthened with the passage of the 1990 Amendments. By far the largest single source of sulfur dioxide (SO,) pollutants are coal fued electric generating power stations. Hence, a substantial portion of the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) research and equipment installation has been geared to the utility industry. Several competing FGD technologies were touted during the period 1970 to 1990 with varying degrees of success. Subsequently, the more successful technologies have been accepted, revised, and improved to the point that by 1991 third and fourth generation technology is available. A second area of emphasis for FGD has been coal fired industrial boilers. While individually they are much smaller than any electric utility generating station, they do represent a significant source of sulfur pollution. However, due to the size of industrial boilers and their location within industrial and educational complexes, the wet scrubber technology being employed by the utilities is not appropriate for these applications. Hence, fluidized bed combustion (FBC) technology has been developed for the industrial boilers. Since the installation of the first full scale test unit at Georgetown University, several equipment vendors have come forward with an increasing array of more sophisticated FBC units. Currently, FBC technology has matured to the point that the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), in cooperation with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has installed an FBC system on a 250 MW test unit at the Shawnee Power Station in Kentucky.

"Cobalt and lithium recovery from spent Li-ion secondary batteries has been increasingly studied in recent years due to the high value of both metals and the low proven reserves for lithium. The standard method employed until now has been the deactivation and crushing of the batteries, followed by leaching of the L1C0O2 spinel from the battery cathode using acid solutions, such as 1.5 to 2.0 M HC1 or H2SO4, in a temperature range from 120°C to 250°C. Once leached, the cobalt is separated by electrodeposition and the lithium by precipitation, using large amounts of carbonate to bring the solution to alkaline pH values. In the present work, citric-thiosulfate solutions are used for the spinel leach at room temperature, favoring a reductive environment at room temperature, which stabilizes the cobalt(II) as cobalt citrate and lithium(I) at pH 5, and recovers approximately 99% of both metals.IntroductionThe Li-ion batteries industry has become an important economic sector in recent years. This type of battery is the most promising system for energy storage, because of its high efficiency in charge-discharge cycles, and its adaptability to many configurations. The demand will probably increase because of the need for mobile energy sources in many types of devices ranging from cell phones, tablets, and laptops to medical, navigation and sophisticated communication equipment and even in automobiles.One major problem related to the use of these batteries is the method employed for recycling the components, mostly cobalt and lithium. Currently, there are two processes employed on an industrial scale: the Sony/Sumimoto process, used since 1990 [1] and the Toxco Process [2]. In the first case, incineration is used to open the batteries and at same time volatilize the organic solvents. After that, the metals (copper, iron and aluminum) are physically separated. The cobalt and lithium are recovered as oxides and then thermally treated in order to recycle them for new batteries manufacture."

Secondary aluminum dross, which has been exposed for several years to atmospheric conditions, was characterized using chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, optical and scanning electronic microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Based on the characterization, a method to purify the solids is presented. This method starts with the washing of the dross in boiling water to eliminate the soluble compounds like Na and K, followed by the physical separation of the metallic aluminum by milling and screening. Finally, an acid lixiviation process is applied using three different acid solutions, HCl, HNO3, and H2SO4. The best results were obtained using HCl. The main insoluble components of the dross after lixiviation were Al, SiO2, and Al2O3. MgAl2O4, AlN, Si, and Na2Al22O3·2H20 species were also found. Based on the alumina content, the solid product could be suitable as a raw material in the manufacture of castable refractories or metal matrix composites.

This paper describes developments in ferro-nickel furnace technology, specifically improvements to cooling methods, furnace controls, and high voltage furnace operating regime. The evolution of these technologies is briefly presented, as context for describing the current state of the art that has enabled ferro-nickel furnace operation at over 75 MW and specific energy consumption of less than 400 kWh/t dry ore. Examples from existing operations are used to illustrate present best practices, and potential future trends are discussed. The paper begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of pyrometallurgical treatment of lateritic ores that drive ferro-nickel furnace design. Furnace wall cooling methods are related to the requirements resulting from specific furnace process conditions, including slag and metal compositions, as well as arc and bath power. The benefits of high productivity and low specific energy consumption resulting from high voltage (shielded-arc) operating practice are discussed, along with the furnace controls and electrical power train that enable such operation even with captive power generation.

An equilibrium study was carried out at 1873 K to ascertain the effect of carbon in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-MnO-FetO slag systems on their FetO and MnO activity coefficients, representing the slag?s thermodynamic potential for steel reoxidation. Both ?FetOand ?MnO showed not only a sharp increment, but also a simultaneous slow decrement by increasing carbon content in slag, suggesting opposite roles of the carbon according to its stable forms. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was introduced to clarify the stable forms of carbon in slag. XPS results prove that carbon dissolves in slag as carbonate, and carbide ions under oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. It was concluded that carbonate ions increase ?FetOand ?MnO, and that carbide decreases them. This paper suggests an application method of the present results to actual ladle refining processes, in order to enhance steel cleanliness without decreasing (FetO + MnO) content in slag. The molten salts M2S2O7and MHSO4, the binary molten salt systems M2S2O7-MHSO4and the molten salt-gas systems M2S2O7-V2O5and M2S2O7-M2SO4-V2O5(M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) in O2, SO2and Ar atmospheres have been investigated by thermal methods like calorimetry, Differential Enthalpic Analysis (DEA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Fundamental thermodynamic data like temperatures and molar heats of solid-solid transition and fusion, phase diagrams, heat capacities of solids and liquids, heat of mixing, and heats of complex formation have been obtained and are reviewed here. Also EPR spectroscopic evidence of V(IV) complexes and their structure are reported and the results are discussed in relation to the mechanism of SO2oxidation by V2O5based industrial catalysts. An abandened breakwater, located at the rear of No. 2 berth in Dongdu Port area of Xiamen City, was not cleaned thoroughly when the backfilling of sand started. The uncleaned stone layer was about 2 to 3 meters deep, with the average piece of stone weighing about 1 to 3 kN. A large grain storing house, 220X 60m2 in area, was designed and built at the above mentioned complicated site. The foundation of the grain house are made up of the cast-in-situ piles. It is well known that it is difficult for the submarine engineering drill to go down through such large-sized stones. Having com-pared the various plans, a final decision has been made which involves explosions with small amounts of charge plus cone bit in the enlarging of the size of the pores. Such a method has successfully prevented the pores from slumping and made it possible to fulfill the project without any difficulties. This paper also introduces the ways in effectively dealing with each individual stone.
