"The basic requirement of glass industry for the silica sand is at least 99% SiO2 content. On the other hand, coloring impurities such as Fe and Ti, must be removed. Flotation is the most widely used method for the purification of silica sands from impurities. In this study experimental studies were carried out to reduce Fe content of Mersin (Turkey) district silica sands by flotation. Silica sand sample with a d80 particle size of 1.85 mm was reduced below 0.5 mm in size. Then the size fraction -0.5 +0.106 mm was subjected to flotation tests. In flotation tests, sulfonate-type R801-R825, fatty acid based DER NA 7 (Produced by a Turkish company) and HA110-HA150 a blend of various chemicals produced by Mersin Cam-Is Mining Company (producer of glass raw materials) were used as collectors. Flotation tests showed that sulfonate type R801-R825 collectors provided much better results in acidic medium (pH: 3). The optimum pH value for DER NA, HA150 and HA110 collectors was found to be 7. It was observed that the addition of collector at once caused an increase in the amount of floated product that resulted in a loss of silica to the tailings. In the case of multistage addition of the collector much better selectivity was achieved. As a result of flotation tests conducted under best conditions, a concentrate assaying 0.046% Fe was obtained with a weight percentage of 93.4 when DER NA 7 was used as a collector. In the case of R801-R825 a concentrate was produced with 0.058% Fe content with a yield of 98.4%. On the use of HA150-HA110 the concentrate was produced with 96% weight recovery and 0.052% Fe content."

Mine ventilation in the German coal mining industry is concerned mainly with problems of thermal environment arising from greater depths and with increasing emission of methane gas. The development of computer techniques over the past ten years for solving these and ancillary problems is reviewed. The emphasis from a planning and control point of view falls mainly on ventilation network calculations, temperature predictions and advance estimates of methane emission.

Fly ash from four sources and in certain proportions was shown to assist chemical coagulation of turbid water and settling of chemically induced floc. Fly ash reduced the time required to form the first visible floc, promoted more uniform flocs about 2 mm in diameter, and increased the mean settling rate of floc particles. Also, the addition of fly ash produced denser sludges than those obtained with alum alone. Final turbidities were independent of fly ash particle size and carbon content. Optimum proportions of fly ash additive are given.

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a satellite-based monitoring technique that complements other in-situ methods for detecting and measuring surface displacement. Recent advances in data processing algorithms, coupled with the use of high-resolution satellite systems, make it possible to now provide high-frequency InSAR monitoring services, with updated results delivered every time a new satellite image is acquired. The advent of large, continuously updated data sets, however, brings new challenges, including the need to rapidly sift through the data to identify only those points showing relevant ground displacement information. This has been achieved by using trend variation analysis tools, that quickly isolate and highlight only areas of anomalous behavior. The paper focuses on project case studies where continuous InSAR monitoring has proven to be key in identifying displacement trend changes near tunnel alignments.

A qualidade superficial dos produtos lingotados continuamente está ligada diretamente aos estágios iniciais de solidificação do aço no molde. Nessa etapa do processo, os parâmetros e estratégias de oscilação são decisivos para a obtenção de produtos com qualidade superficial adequada. Assim, foi desenvolvido na Usiminas um sistema computadorizado para monitoramento dos parâmetros de oscilação do molde, de modo a fornecer subsídios para um melhor entendimento do processo. Este sistema monitora, em tempo real, o eixo vertical e as oscilações nos eixos horizontal e transversal, mesmo com baixas amplitudes. O sistema desenvolvido possibilita a obtenção dos dados com alta precisão, de forma totalmente automática e a realização de pós-tratamento de forma a se obterem valores relativos ao processo de lingotamento e funcionamento do molde.

Climaxed by the recent start-up of the $6.3 million Young mill in September 1975, Asarco has pushed Tennessee back into number one position as the leading zinc mining state. Furthermore, start-up of the Young mill is expected to insure a much-needed and continuing domestic zinc supply, at a time when US mines can only supply one-half of 1975 domestic consumption.

Near the port city of Whitby in the north-east of England, Anglo American (AA) is setting up the deepest mine in the UK, which will have a depth of 1,500m. The purpose of the project is to extract and transport polyhalite, both underground, and to market it globally. As part of the construction works, BAUER Technologies Ltd, the UK subsidiary of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH, constructed three different shafts using the diaphragm wall technique, with depths of up to 120m. In order to ensure the specified vertical tolerance of maximum 200mm, several measurement methods were applied, and the results were documented in a 3D model. Complex de-sanding plant technology and specially developed polymer products were adopted to regenerate the trench supporting bentonite-slurry.

Based on Thermogravimetric and Differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), porous copper powder is prepared by thermal decomposition of complicated copper oxalate. The effects of various conditions on the morphology, crystalline grain size and specific surface area of copper powder were investigated, including temperature, duration, mixing ratio of nitrogen and hydrogen. Furthermore, composition and morphologies of the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and BET adsorption isotherm. It is found that porous copper powder was produced under optimum conditions. The specific surface area is over 6.74 m2?g-1, and average pore size in particles is about 30.3 nm. After comparison of SEM images, the final product Cu well inherits the morphology of the precursor, thus a mechanism of in-situ decomposition is proposed.

A engenharia por trás destes equipamentos é de vital importância para o bom desempenho operacional, garantindo produtividade e segurança. Compreender os mecanismos de desgaste do equipamento nos auxilia na tomada de decisão, reforçando regiões de maior desgaste. Para isso medir com precisão o perfil de desgaste, é uma tarefa de vital importância para o sucesso do projeto. Neste trabalho elaborou-se um modelo espacial para estimação do desgaste do RH usando ferramentas da Geoestatística. Através de coletas de alguns pontos foi possível criar um mapa do desgaste estimando valores para as demais regiões. Também foi foco neste estudo analisar a influência do entupimento dos bicos na taxa de circulação do aço e influencia na erosão da parede refratária.

Poisonous hydrocyanic acid gas (HCN) is sometimes evolved in dangerous quantities from cyanides used in metallurgical and chemical operations. This gas is much used for fumigating buildings, ships, greenhouses, and such commodities as grain and cotton to destroy rats, mice and insect pests. Wherever cyanide fumes are evolved, thorough ventilation is necessary in order to render the sur- rounding air safe to breathe. Many persons have been killed by entering tanks and fumigated places too soon, and a simple test for this gas would promote safety. In view of the need for an easy method for quantitatively determining HCN in air, the three color reactions used originally for testing HCN in solution tions *** were modified and adapted. The reactions employ (1) picric acid (CH(NO2)3OH) which is yellow but combines with hydrogen cyanide to form a red- purple dye, isopurpuric acid****; (2) phenolphthalin (CH1604), which is a reduc- tian product of the phenolphthalein (CH4) used for acid indicator, this colorless substance is oxidized***** by presence of HCN to pink colored phenolph- thalin; and (3) guaiacum which oxidized from colorless to blue******. The objective of this paper is to share the optimisation journey of a pilot Reflux classifier (RC) circuit in the Exxaro GG1 plant, at Grootegeluk beneficiation complex in Lephalale, South Africa. The RC circuit was commissioned in 2016 to produce semi-soft coking coal at its fines circuit; however the stability of operation as well as the quality control of the coal product was not fully achieved. Various test campaigns and optimisation studies were conducted to understand and optimise the RC circuit at GG1. The studies revealed circuit design inefficiencies; provided an improved technical understanding of the current pilot circuit and the parameters required for the circuit to reach a stable operation. The operation was stabilised with its current inefficiencies to produce an average 12.5% ash semi-soft coking coal product for sustained periods, above the initial target of 10.3% ash. Solid fuel, usually coke or anthracite, is commonly added to ground iron ore fines in the pelletising process to reduce the amount of burner fuel required and the maximum firing temperature, while maintaining pellet strength and the productivity of the pelletising plant. However, the use of coke and coal contribute to the production of greenhouse gases (eg carbon dioxide) and are a source of NOx and SOx emissions. Utilising wood biomass / wood char is one methodology CSIRO Minerals is investigating as an alternative to coke and coal, as it is a renewable energy source that is very reactive, has a low ash content and the potential to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from the iron and steel-making process. Previous work has established that charcoal can effectively replace coke in the sintering process (Lovel et al, 2005), and the following experimental work aims to demonstrate that it can also provide an adequate replacement for coke and coal in the pelletising process. The paper presents the results of an experimental testwork program comparing the behaviour of fired pellets containing traditional solid fuels and charcoal. The physical properties of the pellets are compared in terms of their compressive strength, tumble and abrasion indices and the reduction properties. A qualitative assessment of the pellet microstructures is also presented.

"The last time I spoke to you the potash industry was at a low point. Markets were bad and the industry depressed. Many people had left and there was very little being done in terms of development. The current situation is very much changed. The oversupply conditions have given way to a very tight supply capability. All of the firms in the business are expanding in one way or another. These expansions will run from simple debottlenecking through to complete new projects.In New Brunswick, the Potash Corporation of America is proceeding with a new project and the Dennison - Potacan Project is in progress. In Saskatchewan, the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan has an ambitious 2.5 billion dollar expansion program underway while those in the private sector are taking a somewhat less ambitious but equally significant approach to obtain further tonnage out of existing facilities.The significance of these expansions to mineral processors is that we can expect to see expanded employment opportunities and through necessity a surge in innovation and development in an industry that has been traditionally very conservative. This presentation will review potash processing with a view towards highlighting some of the more recent developments."

Gold ores may be amenable to coarse-particle beneficiation where there exist measurable criteria upon which there can be recognition of auriferous versus barren lumps in the run of mine. Through 1996 and 1997, CANMET and the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) conducted a project to study the Phalen Mine’s 7 East longwall ventilation network to help determine methane emission patterns that were having a negative impact on coal production. Increased methane emissions were primarily related to mining depth and were also affected by the influence of a large sandstone body located above the worked seam. The research included the installation of tube bundle systems to monitor waste (gob) methane and pressure differentials. The focus of this paper is on the novel use of tracer gas techniques that helped shed light on the performance of the ventilation system and in determining the methane migration paths in the waste.

When done properly, benchmarking is an extremely effective tool for assessing ones performance, finding areas for improvement, and identifying strengths. However, when done improperly it can be an exercise in futility and result in incorrect observations and conclusions. A primary pitfall of benchmarking is collecting too much unreliable information. Surprisingly, the evolution of data storage and the ease of data collection are not helping with better data collection. Instead, it is just allowing one to collect more information, while at the same time inundating one with too much data. Additionally, the process of data collection can be tedious and is often times delegated to the least experienced individual resulting in unreliable and incorrect data collection and entry. Another primary pitfall of benchmarking is metrics that are cost based or poorly designed. Cost based metrics typically involve comparing unit mining costs ($/tonne). Between mines, unit mining costs are not very well correlated and have become further complicated by significant regional cost variations and mining inflation in the last years. Likewise, poorly designed metrics lead to poor benchmarking results. Examples of poorly defined metrics include: metrics that rely on information that is difficult to collect, metrics that are poorly defined, metrics which are too site focused, and metrics that measure low consequence practices.

During the past few years, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating developments in sealant support systems from a ground control perspective. The proper selection and use of a sealant material can significantly enhance ground control which may result in a decrease in worker related injuries due to ground falls. The purpose of this paper is threefold: to briefly review the current state-of-the-art technology in shotcrete and membrane developments, to evaluate the preliminary findings of a long-term underground study of various types of sealant materials, and to examine installation practices that are critical for an effective sealant material. The underground study utilizes NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine to evaluate the long-term performance of several types of shotcrete and membrane materials. Sealant performance to date have been evaluated on a regular basis over a two year period. Although the study is still ongoing, critical mining practices were identified that may seriously effect the bond of the sealant materials to the mine roof and rib; most notably, the importance of scaling and thorough cleaning of the rib prior to application. Also, results froman extensive series of Schmidt Hammer tests found that the shotcrete increased in strength by 70% during the humid summer months.

"Les Mines Selbaie have been producing copper and zinc concentrates from the A-1 ore zone since 1986. This paper reviews major developments in flotation practice over that period. Firstly, ore blending strategies for Selbaie's non-homogeneous polymetallic ore are discussed. The evolution of reagent use is then reviewed, focussing on copper collector trials. A description of Selbaie's flotation columns follows. Finally, past and future developments for process control are outlined.Depuis 1986, Les Mines Selbaie produisent du concentré de cuivre et de zinc provenant de la zone A-1.
