An exhaustive program of geologic studies and mapping has been conducted by the Geological Survey in the Iron River district of Michigan since May 1943. Means of contributing to the success of these studies were sought by the Bureau of Mines, and eventually a program involving geophysical studies and core-drilling was undertaken in the area. All of the work was done either to develop data that would contribute directly to geologic studies or to investigate geophysical methods that might be used as a primary means for the discovery of minable iron ore.

La unidad de producción polimetálica de Yauliyacu, ubicada en la localidad de Casapalca, Lima, tiene una presa de relaves en el paraje de Chinchan del mismo departamento. Sin embargo, dado que la presa nueva Yauliyacu culminaría su función y que la presa auxiliar Tablachaca no contaba con la suficiente capacidad de almacenaje, Centromin Perú evalúo otras alternativas para la ubicación y construcción de una nueva. De acuerdo al estudio realizado, se encontró que la quebrada de Chinchan era la más adecuada puesto que ofrecía mayor capacidad de producción y se descartó las de Corina y Tablachaca. En este sentido, el presente texto describe las características de la quebrada, el diseño del depósito de Chinchan, su proceso de construcción, la limpieza de fundación, el análisis de la estabilidad física y química, la implementación para mejorar la estabilidad de la presa, la mejora de calidad del aire en la zona del depósito, el programa de inversiones y el plan de cierre del relave.

This report is the first of a series concerned with processes for producing magnesium. These reports will evaluate metallothermic, carbothermic , and electrolytic production methods, and will furnish a cost basis for comparing the processes. Areas deemed most promising for future research will be delineated for each procedure. This report presents briefly the history of the metallothermic process, and describes the operations of the Defense Plant Corp. (DPC) plants that employed the process. A hypothetical plant designed to produce 12,000 tons of magnesium per year, using ferrosilicon as a reductant, is described, and raw materials, energy, and major equipment requirements are estimated. Several process modifications are suggested for future research.

The mine and treatment plant of the Teziutlan, unit of the Mexican Corporation, S. A., are located at Aire Libre, in the District of Teziutlan, near the northwest edge of the State of Pueblo, Republic of Mexico. The property is leased from the Teziutlan Copper Co. The town of Teziutlan is the terminus of a branch railroad starting from Oriental Junction or the Mexico-Jalapa-Veracruz narrow-gage system of the National Railways of Mexico. A branch line 18 km in length from Teziutlan to Aire Libre belongs to the Teziutlan Copper Co. and is leased and operated in conjunction with the mine.

"A systematic study of the structure-mechanical properties relationship is reported for nanolayered composites of MoSh-SiC, Mo-MoSh, Mo-MoShNx, MoSi2-MoSi2Nx, and Mo-MoShMoSi2Nx (x=3-4) synthesised by sputtering techniques. These composites have been studied by nano-indentation and cross-sectional TEM as a function of annealing temperature. As-deposited layers are amorphous except for Mo. With increasing annealing temperature, first MoSh and then SiC crystallize, while the hardness progressively increases until the layers start to spheroidize and grain growth sets in at 900ºC. For the case of Mo-MoSi2, the layers react and the composite deteriorates rapidly. However, MoSi2Nx remains amorphous up to 1000ºC, suggesting that it could act as a diffusion barrier between Mo and MoSi2. In fact the Mo. MoSi2Nx, MoSi2-MoSi2Nx and Mo-MoSi2-MoSi2Nx nanolayers are found to remain stable up to such temperatures. IntroductionMolybdenum dislicide, MoSh, is a potential matrix material for high temperature structural composites due to its high melting point and good oxidation resistance at elevated temperature [1]. The two major drawbacks for structural applications are inadequate high temperature strength and poor low temperature ductility. Silicon Carbide (SiC) being hard and thermally compatible with most ceramics and intermetallic compounds, has been found to be suitable for second phase reinforcement in various structural applications and, in particular, the addition of SiC whiskers improves the high temperature yield strength of MoSi2 [2]. While most of the research in MoSb-SiC composites has been on the particulate form of SiC, laminated composites may offer unique properties. It has been shown that synthetic multilayers with alternating layers of metal and/or compounds may exhibit interesting mechanical properties [3]. Enhancement in mechanical properties by decreasing the wavelength of multilayer spacing has been studied extensively. In general, two types of strengthening have been proposed: (1) Hall-Petch strengthening [4,5], where the strength increase is inversely proportional to the square root of the layer thickness; (2) Koehler modulus strengthening [6], which increases with modulus difference and decreasing layer thickness. In the present study, we have performed a systematic study of the relationship between strength and structure in a number of different nanolayered systems based on MoSh. Layer thicknesses have been varied and their nanostructures have been varied by heat treatment. Previous work on MoSi2-SiC is summarized [7]. In an attempt to improve fracture toughness, MoSh-Mo nanolayered materials have been prepared but are found to react and deteriorate. Previous work has shown that nitrided MoSi2 (MoSi2Nx with x=3-4) is highly stable [8] and so nanolayered composites of MoSi2-MoSi2Nx and Mo-MoSi2-MoSi2Nx have been prepared to assess the' stability and mechanical properties of these composites. "N-acetyl-beta(B)-D-glucosaminidase is a N-acetyl-beta((B)-D-glucosaminidase enzyme se¬creted by alveolar macrophages in response to phagocytosis of particulate material. Alveolar macrophages participate in the degradation and fibrosis of pulmonary tissue that results in pneumoconiosis. Known quantities of four characterized respirable dusts were bronchoscopically placed into the right caudal lung lobe of macaque monkeys. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples were collected from dust-exposed right lung and unexposed left lung of the same individuals at 2-week intervals for 12 weeks after dust instillation. The samples were tested for N-acetyl-B-D-glucosaminidase activity to determine if the enzyme levels could serve as an indicator of pulmonary injury induced by generic coal dusts when compared to known fibrogenic and nuisance dusts. Installation of generic quartz, anthracite, or TiO2 dusts produced significant elevations of enzyme activity and increased numbers of macrophages in the dust-exposed lobes. Elevations in enzymatic activity and macrophage numbers were greatest in response to generic quartz dust. These results suggest that quantitative levels of N-acetyl-B-D-glucosaminidase activity may be a useful indicator of acute and chronic lung injury following exposure to fibrogenic and nonfibrogenic dusts.IntroductionCoal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) is an occupational pulmonary disease associated with the inhalation of coal mine dust. An important external factor in the development of CWP is the composition of the respirable coal mine dust. A cause-and-effect relationship exists between coal mine dust and CWP, but it has not been shown that exposure to generic coal dusts will cause CWP [12]. Numerous immunological, biochemical, and cellular changes occur in CWP; however, in this study, only N-acetyl-beta(B)-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase), protein, and alveolar macrophages (AM) will be examined [7, 32, 33]."

ABSTRACT The subject of gold flotation has been reviewed extensively. Most of these reviews focus on the theories of gold flotation and the physical and chemical effects that may impact the efficacy of the gold flotation process. The current status of gold flotation chemistry as it is being applied in industry has not been widely addressed. This paper reviews current gold flotation practice and research advancements and discusses how these applications tie in with the current understanding of gold flotation chemistry. Survey results from worldwide gold flotation operations are analyzed. Potential future areas of gold flotation research are highlighted.

"To increase the bearing capacity of the ground, soil improvement technique is often adopted. One advantage of soil improvement techniques is the fact, that the impact to the environment is low, as the system utilizes the existing soil. Recently, compressive strength of soil improvement gets more into the focus for the use of building foundation. To prevent brittle fracture, which is a weak point of soil improvement, fiber reinforced soil improvement has been developed. Laboratory tests were conducted to examine the fibers suitable for reinforced soil improvement, and examine the optimum mix design for fiber cement slurry. Based on the laboratory tests, polypropylene fiber and cellulosic viscosity admixture was selected. For the laboratory tests a scaled model of CSM mixing head was used to examine the dispersion of the fibers in the ground. Using the CSM mixing head, the outer periphery fibers of soil improvement seemed to be arranged in the vertical direction, toughness performance of the soil improvement could be improved. Furthermore, full scale field test was performed using actual CSM unit, modified to enable the use of fiber mixed slurry. The validity of the material as well as the toughness performance of the soil improvement, determined from lab test results, was confirmed. In addition, it was confirmed that fiber reinforced soil improvement can be constructed appropriately by CSM method.2 INTRODUCTIONSoil improvement technique to improve the strength and deformation performance of ground has been used for a long time. Cement improved methods, with the increase of the deep Mixing Method, which has been disseminated since the 1970's, was often used since. Cement used soil improvement technology has been utilized to stabilize excavations, slopes in embankment and much more. Recently, it can be used for preventing liquefaction by building soil improvement in a grid (Suzuki et al. (1996)), and also as basis of the structure by increasing the compression strength of soil improvement (Yamashita et al. (2011)). Cement used soil improvement method, a technique for mixing the in-site soil and cement, can effectively utilize natural resources, and it can be expected that its use will increase further in the future. Therefore, soil improvement technique will be able to minimize the impact on the environment. Cement improved soil is a mixture of soil particles and cement with high compressive strength but low tensile strength. Since tensile strength of soil improvement is low, brittle destruction occurs. Therefore, it is not possible to use soil improvement in conditions acting with bending stress. If a horizontal impact force occurs in the improved soil, the width of the soil improvement needs to be increased to reduce the bending stress. If preventing the brittle fracture of soil improvement, the width of soil improvement could be reduced, then less resources would be needed. In order to increase the tensile strength of the soil improvement, several studies for the mix of fiber and soil were performed. Victor (1992) indicates cracking deterrent effect by fiber based on laboratory tests. Moreover, based on laboratory tests, Hayasaki (1982) illustrated the effect on the tensile strength of the fiber types, the type of fiber, the diameter of and the length of fiber."

The Bureau of Mines stabilized 10 acres of windblown copper mill tailings at McGill, Nev., by a combination chemical-vegetative procedure. Legumes, winter wheat, wheat-grasses, and wild rye were seeded, and the area was subsequently sprayed with a resinous adhesive chemical to stabilize the sands until the vegetation could grow. During the year since treatment, the area has been well stabilized against wind erosion. The established vegetation appears to be capable of self-perpetuation and renewal without irrigation. The cost of stabilizing the area was $135.50 per acre.

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) conducted mineral investigations of the Payette Crest-South Fork area in west central Idaho near McCall, Idaho, in 1989. There are no known producing mines or mineral production from the area. Forty-seven samples were taken (stream sediment, rock. and placer); no identified mineral resources were delineated.

"NIOSH research has shown that heat/humidity buildup is a major concern within coal mine refuge alternatives (RAs). These high temperature and humidity levels inside an RA may expose occupants to heat stress. Due to the safety risks associated with testing using human subjects, NIOSH partnered with ThermoAnalytics to create detailed thermal simulation models of RAs with human occupants. The objective of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature response and moisture loss in environments that may be encountered in a coal mine RA. These parameters were studied across a range of temperatures and relative humidity values to determine if the current 95°F apparent temperature limit for RAs is reasonable. The results indicated that the 95°F apparent temperature limit is protective, provided that miners are supplied with sufficient water. The results also indicated that the body core temperature did not reach dangerous levels even at an apparent temperature of 130°F. However, the results show that moisture loss increases with apparent temperature. Therefore, if the apparent temperature limit were increased, the water provided in an RA would have to be increased to offset moisture loss. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature and moisture loss (sweating and respiration) in environments that are likely to be encountered in a coal mine refuge alternative (RA). A range of temperatures and relative humidity were studied to determine whether the current 95°F Steadman apparent temperature (AT) limit and 2.25 quart/day water requirements for RAs as mandated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are reasonable [1, 2]. The effects of metabolic heat rate (activity level), miner size (height and weight), and pose (sitting or lying) on core temperature and moisture loss were also studied. MODEL DESCRIPTION TAITherm thermal modeling software (ThermoAnalytics, Inc.) was used to simulate humans in RA-like environments within a range of temperature and relative humidity combinations. The TAITherm Human Thermal Model (HTM) predicts the dynamic thermal response of the simulated miners while accounting for clothing, human tissue thermal properties, and active thermoregulation. The following sections describe the HTM in more detail, the thermal model setup for this analysis, and core temperature and moisture loss metrics found in published literature. Human Thermal Model Overview The TAITherm human thermal model was used to simulate the heat generated by the shelter occupants, and to predict the miners’ skin and core temperatures along with their sweat evaporation rates. The thermoregulation model simulates the process by which the body attempts to maintain a constant core temperature by considering the effects of shivering, sweating, and changes in skin blood flow. This model calculates surface and deep tissue temperatures within the human body as described by a surface mesh."

Of the twelve known ore zones on the Sunro property, acquired by Cowichan Copper Co., only the "B" and "C" orebodies of the "River Zone" had been explored sufficiently to indicate the grade and tonnage. The "B" zone was selected for initial production. The portion of this orebody above the main adit level was developed for horizontal-ring, longhole mining. Ore from the stope would be scraped directly to the coarse ore bin. The lack of a suitable mill site on surface, as well as the 8,000-ft. tramming distance, led naturally to the installation ground. I N November, 1960, a lease was obtained by Co-wichan Copper Co. Ltd. (N.P.L.) from Sunro Mines Ltd., covering the main ore (River) zone of the Sunro property. A total of twelve zones had been located on the property. Nine of these lay within the leased area. "AS THE TITLE implies, this paper will deal with the unusual rather than the standard practices as employed . at the property of North Rankin Nickel Mines, Limited. Fortunately •the mining, with the exception of permafrost conditions, and the milling practices, are the normal approaches dictated by the size, type, and character of the orebody. The unusual aspects are linked directly or indirectly to the isolated location and are •principally ancillary requirements or services covering a broad range from climate to supplies and from finance to entertainment. It is our intent to cover the more salient points of interest together with a brief description of the general operation.To understand the primary motivation of the mine, it must be made clear that North Rankin was conceived as a foothold in the Canadian North, that region embracing 40 per cent of the Dominion which ex-tends north of the commercial tree-line and which includes nearly 50 per cent of the Precambrian Shield, our mainstay of Canadian mining. Secondly, this project was born in an atmosphere of premium sales in the nickel markets, assuring a rapid pay-back of the heavy •capital expenditures. And finally, it has •been coddled through the stark reality of a competitive metal market with the hope and trust that the experiences and achievements will lead over the bill to a bigger and better mine in this virgin territory. This is the briefest story of the mine's history, but it pays tribute to the many people who, in thirty years since .discovery, have championed this project."

Platinum-group metal (PGM) flotation .. concentrate from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to biooxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in an effort to break down the sulfide minerals and liberate the ? associated PGM's for subsequent chemical leaching. Bacterial treatment oxidized up to 94 pct of the sulfide present, destroyed the PGM-bearing pentlandite [ (Ni,Fe),9Ss) mineralization, and dissolved most of the nickel in the concentrate. Results showed that increased sulfide oxidation during the biological stage led to improved PGH recovery in the subsequent. chemical leaching stage. cyanidation at 80° c proved to be the best chemical leachant tested. It removed 7.6 pct of the palladium, 94 pct of the rhodium, 97 pct of the gold, but only 34 pct of the platinum from the biooxidized concentrate.

"Pattern making and metal casting organizations are currently adopting CAD/CAM systems and implementing this technology in design and production. Al though significant progress has been reported, these systems generally are based on two or two and one half dimensional analyses. Very few are based on solid geometric modelers.The present paper emphasizes the need for solid geometric modeling of the casting and rigging system and linkage with a solidification simulator. The nature of some of the technological challenges which have slowed this development are discussed, including accurate description of complex surfaces and their intersections and the bridging of computer encoded information with NC technologies and with FEM-based simulators for stress and thermal analyses. A recently prepared modular-structured FEM simulation code implemented on a micro computer is described.Construction of a solid geometric model of the casting and rigging and validation of the combination for optimum characteristics of soundness, quality and yield by solidification simulation are I inked as key elements in the foundry of the future. Data base support for this CAD/CAM system is rapidly being developed throughout the world.INTRODUCTIONThe simulation of shaped casting solidification using the digital computer, goes back to at least the early nineteen-sixties when Forsund (1) in Denmark applied the technique to the problems of casting surface quality.Prior to that time, the work of Paschkis and co-workers using the analog computer ranges back to the nineteen-forties, when work sponsored by the AFS Heat Transfer Committee at Columbia University revealed many hitherto unknown or only partly anticipated aspects of casting solidification (2).Three reviews of the various historical aspects of simulation should be referenced. Firstly, the AFS monograph by one of the present writers (RDP) and his colleagues - describing background and later work, again sponsored by the AFS Heat Transfer Committee at the University of Michigan (3). Secondly, a review prepared by Durham and Berry (4) which discusses broad aspects of casting solidification simulation. Thirdly, a review by Erickson (5) which contains an excellent bibliography to 1980. In addition to these papers, the publications lists of the CADCAST project* and the proceedings of the two Engineering Foundation Conferences of Casting and Welding Modeling, published by ASME, are also most notable (6) •"

Newstan Mine commenced mining operations in 1887 and has since undertaken extensive mining within the Young Wallsend, Great Northern, Fassifern, Borehole and West Borehole coal seams using a range of mining methods including board and pillar mining and longwall mining.Newstan Mine is planning to extend the existing mine workings using longwall and miniwall mining methods to produce up to 4.5 Mt/a of run-of-mine (ROM) coal for at least 25 years. The planned extension in the Main East and South West sections will involve developing new longwall panels and related mains headings. The new area contains higher specific gas emissions (SGE) than previously experienced at Newstan Mine. To achieve the optimum ventilation requirements for the longwall operation in this new area, a new ventilation shaft was designed to be constructed using the blind boring method in the South West Headings section.This paper presents the shaft design parameters and selection criteria for the construction of the new ventilation shaft, including the construction phase and the holing process to connect the shaft to the underground workings. "In the last decades heuristic approaches based on logic rules have been one favored tool to control flotation units and plants on top of distributed control systems. Fundamental knowledge on flotation processes, expressed in reliable models, and programs to assure the quality of the information, contained in available measurements, are still insufficient to develop robust predictive control strategies. In this paper the idea of using simplified models, when a known disturbance is coming into the process, is explored. As a first approach, the set points of the froth depth and air flow rate controllers are estimated based on this model. Since these target predictions are only approximate, a conventional feedback expert system, based on logic rules, continues the task of calculating the set points of the distributed controllers, in order to decrease the gap between actual and desirable metallurgical targets. This combined actions permitted a fast response of the process to change the operation of the circuit when a measured disturbance is detected. This control system was implemented and experimentally evaluated in a pilot rougher flotation circuit, with three pneumatic cells, with froth depth and air flow rate controllers in each cell. Since the circuit is operated for the air-water system, a phenomenological model, with parameters estimated from industrial data, is fed on-line with real operating variables and virtual values, characterizing the feed (grades, solids%, particle size distribution), in order to predict the metallurgical targets (recovery and concentrate grade). Several cases are discussed showing the benefits of this control system and the possible improvements to work on. INTRODUCTIONToday, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design."

Exploration for coal has been on-going in South Australia for the past 100 years. During this period substantial resources of low rank coal have been delineated throughout the State. These deposits are of variable quality often with high moisture, sodium, chlorine, sulphur and ash content and although generally regarded as suitable for use in conventional pulverised fuel boilers, many are difficult to utilise. The only operating coal mine in South Australia is at Leigh Creek where coal bearing shale was discovered by chance in 1888 during excavation of a railway dam near the township of Copley. Leigh Creek has had a very diverse mining history from the initial small scale underground mining through to open-cut mining utilising draglines and more recently large shovels and trucks.

In the chloride process to manufacture TiO2 pigment, feedstocks containing higher TiO2 contents (high-grade ores or HGOs) are favoured in order to minimise production of undesirable by-products. Most of today’s HGOs are produced through the smelting or reduction and leaching of ilmenite, processes which consume significant energy and/or produce large volumes of non-titanium materials that may have to be landfilled. In order to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of its TiO2 business, the DuPont Company, working with Kobe Steel Ltd, has developed an innovative process called TiRON for making HGO. Using a rotary hearth furnace, the process reduces ilmenite to a high TiO2 slag and metallic iron granules. The TiO2 slag is suitable for TiO2 pigment manufacture, and the iron is suitable for steel making. TiRON can process sand or rock ilmenite of varying compositions and particle sizes. Fossil fuel instead of electricity supplies the energy for the reduction. Dusts and off-spec materials are recycled. These process attributes, together with capital requirements estimated to be significantly lower, give TiRON substantial economic, environmental, and process flexibility advantages over conventional ilmenite upgrading processes. TiRON has been demonstrated at the semi-works scale, and preparations are being made to bring it to the pilot scale.
