The adverse health impacts from diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure are a well-known global concern. The building evidence has triggered underground mining operations to review existing atmospheric conditions and assess the scale of the challenge faced. South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington) evaluated the ability to provide a healthy atmosphere from a whole mine approach, taking into account existing preventative controls including: maintenance strategies, fuel quality, mining operations, ventilation provisions, monitoring protocols and effective education and training programs.During the evaluation process, Cannington gave due recognition to the advice and guidance provided in the Queensland Guidance Note 21 (QGN21), the Guidelines of New South Wales’ MDG29 and Mining Industry Advisory Committee (MIAC) of Western Australia. Each of these documents advises a dilution rate of >0.06 m3/s/kW is best for reduction of DPM exposure in underground mines.Achieving the prescribed mine ventilation rate typically results in the need to directly invest significant capital into increasing ventilation infrastructure in order to further dilute contaminants. In today’s economic market of volatile metal prices and increasing pressures to meet regulatory requirements, it can become challenging for established metalliferous operations to create a balance between optimisation of current ventilation infrastructure and capital outlay.In order to obtain and correctly justify the requirements for capital investiture Cannington conducted a ventilation operational analysis for the life-of-operation, identifying the existing air volume envelope was adequate for current and future production rates by optimising existing primary ventilation infrastructure through the implementation of a modified ventilation on demand (VoD) and air conservation system.This process achieved sustainable operating and capital cost reductions without compromising delivery of adequate ventilation to work areas. The process also recognised that engaging mine workers’ ownership of their work areas is crucial to maintaining a technically efficient and operationally robust ventilation system.This paper will concentrate on Cannington’s existing preventative controls, their implementation and their management for the prevention of increased DPM exposure; reducing the risk of both short and long-term health impacts to ‘as low as reasonably achievable’ (ALARA).CITATION:Black, J and Reid, D, 2017. One of the first matters to receive attention from the Bureau of Mines when it was authorized to undertake investigations relating to wastes in the mineral industries was the smoke problem at smelting and ore-roasting plants. This bulletin is published by the bureau primarily for persons who seek information on the subject of metallurgical smoke but are unacqllainted with the technical language of metallurgy. It is, of course, not possible to free a techniCal subject entirely from teclmicalities, but, 80 far as possible, statements are made in plain and simple English. Metallurgical smoke causes considerable friction between the metallurgical industry and agriculture in certain parts of the country. Owners of smelting plants are making every effort to devise ways and means to do away with possible damage and annoyance from smoke and are meeting with success. The problem is peculiarly difficult in this country because of the large tonnages of material that must be handled. The solution of the problem is not yet at hand and much work still remains to be done. As the mineral industry is one of the great basic industries of the country and of necessity is entitled to full consideration, it should be accorded freedom to work out the smoke problem to the benefit of all concerned. The effort is made in this paper to present the problem of metallurgical smoke as it actually exists, without bias of any kind. The writer takes this opportunity to express his indebtedness to the sources of information on which he drew, many of which are enumerated in the selected bibliography at the end of this paper. In connection with the author's use of the present tense in describing plants and methods, the reader should note that none of the references in that bibliography is of later date than 1913. Much information was obtained by personal visits and by correspondence, and thanks are hereby tendered to all persons who kindly furnished data. The writer desires to thank particularly F. G. Aços de alta resistência mecânica têm sido aplicados largamente no setor automotivo para redução do peso veicular e aumento da segurança. O aço de alta resistência e baixa liga (ARBL) é um dos exemplos de materiais utilizados em peças estruturais e de reforço dos automóveis. Nesse trabalho foi avaliado o efeito das temperaturas de bobinamento e encharque nas propriedades mecânicas do aço ARBL laminado a frio microligado ao nióbio, com limite de escoamento mínimo de 410 MPa, produzido em escala industrial. De uma forma geral, foram observados queda nos limites de escoamento e resistência, e aumento do alongamento total do aço com a elevação das temperaturas avaliadas. Foi observado que a temperatura de encharque apresentou uma maior influência, ocasionando uma maior queda na resistência mecânica. Como não foram verificadas alterações significativas no tamanho de grão ferrítico, as variações nos valores de propriedades mecânicas podem ser atribuídas ao coalescimento de precipitados.

Open-pit mine planning is a key process in the definition of mineral reserves and their efficient removal. Ore in open-pit mines is extracted bymining sequential pits called pushbacks. Pushbacks need to satisfy complex geometrical constraints to ensure the efficient usage of equipment. To date, no algorithms that both account for those constraints and maximizeNPV, are commercially available. Therefore, pushback design is done by engineers relying on their expertise to incorporate practical features intothe output of commercial tools. In this article, we present a new algorithm that produces close to optimal practical pushbacks and we illustrate its performance in real mines.

In studying the chemistry of lubricating-oil fractions from so-called ?paraffin-base? crudes, one of the first requisites is a method for the separation and removal of waxy material. A method utilizing solvents for this purpose is described in this report, together with preliminary experiments with solvents that led to its development. The solvents actually used are secondary butyl alcohol, acetone, and mixtures of these.. Isopropyl alcohol was also studied. Preliminary Experiments In previous work on "intermediate-base" crude oil, following the work of Wyant and Marsh acetone had been used for laboratory separations of oil and wax. Then acetone was tried for the separation of the waxes and oils of "paraffin-base" crude, the volume of acetone required (80 parts to 1 part of oil) was found to be too great for large-scale work. For this reason the effectiveness of other solvents was studied; the separation by acetone, however, was used as a standard.

A ultra-high strength medium Mn steel with good ductility was designed and manufactured via the combination of warm rolling and V alloying, which produced not only the extensive precipitation of fine VC particles in both ferrite and austenite but also the bimodal size distribution of retained austenite (RA) grains. A substantial increase of yield strength up to 650 MPa was achieved due to the addition of V without deteriorating ductility. The coarse RA grains firstly transformed to martensite during yielding at the much higher stress threshold, followed by a significant work hardening due to dislocations multiplication, twinning-induced-plasticity (TWIP) and transformation-induced-plasticity (TRIP) in the ultrafine RA grains. The best combination of strength and ductility included 1.5 GPa ultimate tensile strength and 28% total elongation. This was achieved due to the sustainable TRIP and TWIP effects in the later straining stage resulting from the ultrafine austenite grains, the latter were reversely transformed from the recrystallized ferrite grains.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated a new dust control technique for longwall personnel required to work at the tailgate end of the face. This technique utilizes a water-powered scrubber to clean a portion of the face air, which is discharged behind a brattice partition at the working area. Laboratory simulation of this system in a wind tunnel resulted in average efficiencies greater than 70 pct with system efficiency directly related to scrubber quantity. Underground evaluations indicated a similar direct relationship between scrubber quantity and system efficiency. Gravimetric measurements of respirable dust made during these underground evaluations resulted in average protection efficiencies ranging from 30.7 to 42.5 pct with increasing scrubber air quantity.

This report presents low-temperature tar data from studies by the Bureau of Mines of tars produced in an externally heated (entrained state) pilot-plant-scale retort. Analytical data covering 20 low-temperature tars, derived from the. carbonization of various ranks of foreign and domestic coals, are tabulated. The character of the tar is discussed in relationship to carbonizing conditions and the rank of coal. It is seen that in carbonization techniques that employ entrainment or fluidization of the coal particle, carbonization conditions are secondary to coal rank with respect to tar-oil yields and composition. The influence of distillation conditions on recoverable yields of tar products is presented. The probable yield of commercially important chemical products, based on a ton of pure (moisture- and ash-free) coal, are predicted. INTRODUCTION Low-temperature tars produced by entrainment or fluidized carbonization techniques that employ internally heated reactors represent the most nearly primary tart produced by industrial processes. In brief, such a process involves the application of a heat gradient to the coal particle "boiling" or suspended in a turbulent state in the reactor chamber. Conditions are observed so that the coal particle remains suspended within the reaction zone by a gas stream for a time interval commensurate with maximum tar-oil yield. The heat necessary for the carbonization reaction may be obtained entirely from the hot (preheated) gas stream, or it may be derived partly from the combustion of the volatile products and char by the transport gases, usually air. The volatile material moves out of the carbonizing zone at a rate that approaches the velocity of the transport gas. Carbonizing conditions are ideal when a minimum particle residence time is obtained within the reactor at a given temperature and a maximum yield of condensable volatile matter is released. In industrial practice this objective is a compromise.

This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The author wishes to acknowledge the friendly cooperation of mine officials at the properties visited. At the. "The Nain Province (NP) of northern Labrador is a >600 km long by =100 km wide Archean craton that has undergone relatively little mineral exploration until economically signifcant concentrations of orthomagmatic nickel sulphide were discovered by Diamond Fields Resources (DFR) at Voisey’s Bay. Due to the great time span between crust formation andfnal intrusive activity (ca. 3.9 Ga to 1.27 Ga),there were, however, numerous metallogenic events within the NP.The NP was intruded by the ca. 1.3 Ga to1.2 Ga Nain Plutonic Suite (NPS) composite anorthosite-granite complex. The NPS dividesthe NP into the southern Hopedale Block (90 km by 150 km) and the northern SaglekBlock (375 km long by =50 km wide). These two blocks appear to represent two distinct Archean cratonic nuclei, each with its own distinct metallogenic history. The NPS is a coalesced assemblage of composite intrusions which include anorthosite, troctolite, norite, gabbro and granite.The Hopedale Block contains the Hunt River and Florence Lake greenstone belts, and the Weekes Amphibolite which represents remnantsf the older Hunt River greenstone belt. Geologically, these belts have some potential to host komatiitic Kambalda-style nickel, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) and meso -thermal lode gold mineralization. The unconformity between Paleoproterozoic cover sequences and the trondhjemite-tonalite-granodiorite (TTG)suite which engulfed the greenstones was the locus for lead-zinc-bearing quartz-carbonate veins. Minor fracture-hosted uraninite showings are also present in the TTG.The Saglek Block is a high-grade gneissterrane with deformed Archean supracrustal sequences but no greenstone belts. Within the gneiss are variably-sized enclaves that range in composition from anorthositic to ultramafic; some of these latter xenoliths contain abun-dant fuchsite. There are also three small anorthositic to ultramafic meta-igneous complexes present in the gneiss near Okak Bay.Some Archean meta sedimentary and maficgneiss supracrustal sequences contain iron-oxide and sulphide members. The sulphide-bearing Tasiuyak parag neiss defines the cra-tonic suture between the NP and Churchill(Rae) Province. Along the cratonic suture between the NP and Churchill Province from Ramah Bay north are remnants of the Archean(or Paleoproterozoic) Hutton Anortho site Suite. Ultramafc layers within the suite contain chromite and elevated Ni values.Three ca. 2.0 Ga supracrustal sequenceswere deposited in small fault-bounded basins within the NP. The Snyder Group contains pyrrhotitiferous massive sulphide horizons. TheMugford Group contains SEDEX-like massive sulphide blocks in a debris fow and ultramafic sills with unusual PGE concentrations; alaskitic granite cutting basement gneiss to the group contains stockwork-like pyritiferous quartz veins. The Ramah Group contains numerous MVT-style zinc-lead sulphide occurrences.The Reid Brook Intrusion of the NPS contains enormous and high-grade nickel-copper-cobalt massive sulphide bodies at the Voisey’s Bay deposit. Exploration in the northern portions of the NPS in 1995 has indicated the presence of other potentially economic nickel sulphide horizons."

New Mexico is the leading domestic producer of perlite, a hydrated volcanic glass that can be expanded thermally to form a white, very porous, lightweight material. The United States is the leading consumer and producer of perlite in the world (Pettifer 1981). New Mexico produced, at five mines (Fig. 1), about 86% of all domestic crude ore mined in 1984 (Meisinger, 1985). Perlite is mined in 6 other western states, ore is expanded in 33 states, and the expanded ore is consumed in all states (Meisinger, 1985). Gross value of domestic ore mined in 1984 was about $16,500,000 (FOB mine; Meisinger, 1985) with much value added by expansion and processing prior to sale to end users. In contrast to the ubiquitous nature of perlite products in the U.S. economy, facilities for testing perlite ore, expanded perlite, and perlite products are notably lacking on a commercial, cost-effective, or readily accessible basis. The New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Min¬eral Resources (NMBM&MR) established a perlite¬testing facility in 1984 to mitigate this lack and to further the mining of perlite in the state.

"When confronted with the difficult decisions on advancing an exploration project to the feasibility and construction stages, it is important to know how various regions of the ore body will react in the milling and concentration processes. While bench scale test work is common and inexpensive, the results and information provided are somewhat limited due to the difficulty in accurately predicting the effects of recirculating middling streams or gradual changes in solution chemistry.Conventional Pilot Plants, processing 100 to 1,000 kg/hour of sample ore, provide the detailed engineering data required to develop a final process flowsheet and to size the equipment. They are, however, expensive to set-up and operate, and are really only viable for major projects that are well advancedIn the latter part of 1999, the Mineral Development Center at CVRD (MDC) purchased a new piece of mineral processing equipment which can run continuous flotation tests using drill core samples. To evaluate its performance, and to compare it with conventional testing methods, various types of flotation tests were carried out using two different types of copper ore. The limitations and advantages of open circuit and locked cycle bench tests, as well as the Mini Pilot Plant and the Conventional Pilot Plant were evaluated.Open circuit tests carried out at the bench scale only provide basic information. More complete and trustworthy information is obtained, in terms of the recirculation of flows and reaching a permanent and stable flotation regime, as the dynamics and complexity of the tests increases. The data obtained showed that the MPP’s metallurgical performance was equivalent to that of a conventional pilot plant."

"INTRODUCTION Secondary recovery of oil by water-flooding is practiced more extensively in North Texas than in any other section of the State, and the progress and experience of the operations in that area are of continuing interest to all branches of the oil industry. The first Bureau of Mines report on water flooding in North Texas 7/ chronicled the activities from December 7, 193f', when the Railroad Commission of Texas granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into an oil-bearing sand, through 1944. This second report has been prepared as a supplement to Report of Investigations 3906 to show the progress and expansion of water-flooding. The format of this report is almost identical with what of report of Investigations 3906, except for a few miner changes. For the sake of brevity, certain basic information contained on the first report has not been repealed, and the reader is urged to consider the two reports as corporation writings.The North Texas area, as encompassed by the two reports, corresponds Railroad Commission of Texas Districts 7P and 9. Oil-development operations in the two districts, since oil was discovered in 1904, have resulted in the recovery of approximately 1,400,000,000 barrels of oil from a proved area that has been estimated to exceed 413,000 acres. During October barrels of oil was produces by primary and secondary-recovery methods from 1,746 flowing wells and 25,211 pumping wells, a daily average 6.6 barrels per well. Of this total volume of oil recovered in October 1947, 47,965 barrels (0.87 percent) was recovered from leases on which water-flooding operations were in progresses."

"All mineral processing facilities that use girth gear driven mills need to inspect the gear teeth on a routine basis, whether it be every six months to every three years. The inspection frequency depends on gear tooth condition, and the objective is to ensure the operational integrity of the gear teeth. Conventional methods such as magnetic particle testing, visual inspection or dye penetrant examinations rely heavily on operator interpretation. At best, these techniques can determine whether a defect exists, but are unable to provide information on defect severity. This paper describes the use of combining combined eddy current array (eca) and alternating current field measurement (acfm) to provide a complete survey of all surface breaking indications on the whole gear tooth depth. This method accurately determines the size, length and depth of any cracks found on the surface.INTRODUCTION In order to gain a fundamental understanding of the evolving operational and production behavior of a piece of machinery over a specified time period as part of an effective condition monitoring program, a robust data collection process must be firmly established and adhered to. To be effectively implemented within an organization, a condition monitoring program must have support of not only the maintenance, production and engineering staffs, but also executive management support to ensure successful roll out to realize the maximum productivity of the machinery and subsequent cost-savings. One of the key elements of a mineral processing facility that use gear driven SAG Mills as a primary stage for grinding solution, is the integrity of the critical gear unit that drive the mill. For the maintenance team, condition monitoring on the gear unit is crucial for preventative maintenance. A catastrophic failure in the critical gear unit would require a minimum of ten days to replace the gear set, depending on the damage occurred. This, of course, would only be applicable if the client had a spare critical gear set in inventory. If a gear set had to be ordered, it could take from four months to two years to receive a new gear set. For example, in 2007, there was a global backlog of these types of gears sets resulting in a two year delivery. The maintenance costs associated with a catastrophic failure of this type would easily cost in the millions."

Muscovite mica crystals lower than 15 mm diameter are discarded as waste in the mining area of Borborema-Seridó (BRAZIL). The objective of this work was the ore dressing and purification of this waste to be used in the preparation of pearlescent pigment. Muscovite was dry ground using knife mills and an ultrasound treatment. It was possible to achieve 67% of mica with particle size lower than 100 µm. This product was used in the preparation of brilliant pigments based on muscovite flakes covered with rare earth oxides (CeO2, PrO2, Ce0,95Pr0,05O2). The pigments were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and scanning electronic microscopy. The color of the resulting pigments was analyzed using the CIELAB method and it showed the following colors: muscovite-CeO2 ? yellow, muscovite-PrO2? black and muscovite-Ce0,95Pr0,05O2 ? orange. Those results have shown that ?trash mica? is suitable for use in pigment preparation.

During 2007 and 2008, the project Optimal Fragmentation in Blasting II was conducted at the Långåsen quarry of NCC Roads AB near Arlanda. The main goals were:an evaluation of the effect of using electronic delay detonators (EDDs) in quarry blastinga validation of the design curve concept introduced at the Vändle quarry.Five production blasts were monitored. After a first trial round, the remaining four rounds each had about 100 Ø89 mm holes in a 14–19 m high bench charged with site mixed emulsions. In rounds 1 and 2, a tighter pattern than normal was used in one half of the rounds, raising the specific charge there from 0.7 to 1.0 kg/m3. Non-electric initiation was used with two holes per 25 ms delay in-row and 67 ms between rows. In rounds 3 and 4, electronic delay detonators were used instead, with 10 and 5 ms in-row delays respectively.The monitoring encompassed drill hole collaring and alignment, in-hole deviations, the rock structure in the bench faces from 3D imaging, first row burdens, etc. Eleven 400 t samples were taken from the muck piles and sorted in the quarry and sieved in the laboratory (lab). The lab data made up a fines tail that was grafted onto the in-pit sorting data to form sieving curves for the test piles. These curves were then compensated for the absence of boulders to construct the sieving curves for the blasted muck pile.These have been used to derive fragmentation model formulas for the non-electric rounds, also called design formulas. They are based on blast geometry, charging data and the properties of the rock mass. The formulas may be used to estimate the effect of changing blasthole pattern, borehole diameter and stemming length for example.The use of EDDs gave several unexpected results. In comparison with non-electric initiated rounds with a somewhat lower specific charge the fragmentation was much coarser; x50 increased from 160 to 200 mm. The effect of raising the specific charge in the non-electric initiated rounds from 0.72 to 0.99 kg/m3 was a much finer fragmentation; x50 decreased from 160 to 120 mm.CITATION:Ouchterlony, F, Nyberg, U, Olsson, M, Widenberg, K and Svedensten, P, 2015. Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. This report presents the results of a three-phase investigation of the feasibility of using cemented coal waste in active underground coal mines to prevent mine subsidence. Coal caste was broadly defines to include waste from both coal preparation plants and coal-fired power plants. Underground systems with potential for cemented backfill are determined through identification of current mining methods and available technologies for cemented backfilling and consideration of materials and systems constraints upon mining and backfilling integration technical concerns including operation, health and safety, materials utilization, environmental impact, applicability and techni¬cal status are assessed for six (6) systems which were identified as potentially feasible. Two (2) of these systems are conceptualized in a hypothetical case history and developed to further assess their operational and economic feasibility. Comparisons of costs among both systems and with costs of surface disposal are presented. Also presented are the conclusions reached concerning the present feasibility of using cemented backfill in active coal mines and potential avenues for further research.
