Because of complete understanding of mechanical processing, entire knowledge of theoretical principles of high-energy mills is necessary. These principles are main causales of process that are happened in materials during the mechanical activation. This paper is occupied by theoretical principles of operation of high-energy mills. Conventional high energy mills with balls, high-energy planetary mills and high-energy vibrational mills are particularly considered in the paper.

The property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3,600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10" C to 22° C throughout the year. Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960's when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group.

Coal dust explosions are routinely conducted within the full-scale experimental mine at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory?s (PRL) Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) to meet the needs of numerous safety and health research programs. Many of these explosion tests over the years involved igniting different coal dust and limestone rock dust mixtures (up to 80% by volume rock dust). Following four more recent tests, floor dust samples have been collected and analyzed using the alcohol coking test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the results compared to estimate the flame travel.

The P.W. Gillibrand Company has been processing and stockpiling a suite of heavy minerals at its Soledad Canyon Mine as co-products with construction aggregates since 1984. The heavy minerals are composed of ilmenite, magnetitie, apatite and zircon. The source of the heavy minerals is the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. The valuable minerals are readily amenable to standard ore dressing techniques, such as, gravity, magnetic, flotation and electrostatic separation with good recovery and product quality. More than 20,000 short tons of coarse ilmenite were sold in 1990 to the export market for titanium pigment production.

The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the fourth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismarck, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1963. Them 7 symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including inspection of (1) the 200-megawatt, pulverized Lignite-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glenharold mine of the. Truax-Traer Goal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydro-electric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak.

This report is the fourth in the series, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants. The initial work, Bureau of Mines In- formation Circular 7516, was published in October 1949 in conjunction with the synthetic liquid fuels program authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. It included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. A supplemental bibliography, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, was published in January 1955 to cover the period September 1948 through June 1952; and Supplement 2, Information Circular 7751, published in September 1956, covered the period June 1952 through June 1954. In a recent paper [1], the present authors discussed calculated energy consumption numbers in copper sulphide concentrate smelting for four different smelting technologies. For the present study, from among these technologies, they selected the Noranda/Teniente continuous bath smelting followed by Peirce Smith (PS) converting route to investigate the impact on total energy requirement of some key process variations, such as tuyere injection of dry concentrate vs. slingering of wet concentrate over the molten bath, continuous converting vs. conventional batch PS converting and commercially proven slag cleaning alternatives. In their calculations, the authors used the same thermochemical model and methodology used in their earlier paper. This approach to explore plant design options provides an interesting basis for evaluating flowsheet modifications that could lead to significant copper smelting energy savings. The METSIM software was used in the present paper to carry out heat and mass balance computations for 8 different flowsheet configurations. The results are presented and discussed in the paper with respect to copper recoveries, energy requirements and CO2 emissions.

"INTRODUCTION The Cahaba coal field is the second largest coal—producing area in Alabama. This field underlies parts of Shelby, Jefferson, St. Clair, and Bibb Counties and has an area of about 270 square miles. The Cahaba formations contain a number of coal beds, about 8 of which are mined at present. Although the area contains many folds and faults, samples from various mines and beds indicate that, except for the variation in ash content, the coal from this field is very uniform in character and quality. It is a high-volatile bituminous coal used chiefly for steam-raising purposes and domestic fuel. The coal as mined usually contains too high a percentage of impurities to be marketed without some preparation. The majority of the mines have washing plants in which jigs are the favorite type of equipment, although at some mines tables are used for cleaning the slack sizes. The washing characteristics of the coal from the Cahaba field are very uniform and differ from those of the near-by Warrior field, in that the coarser sizes contain a much lower percentage of bony material than the finer sizes. In general, the bone increases with decrease in size. It breaks into thin flakes, making difficult its elimination in the cleaning process, and gives rise to what is known among the washery operators of the Cahaba field as the ""rash problem.""A previous publication 5 referred to rash from the standpoint of jig operation and suggested some means of handling it with jigs. This report presents the results of table tests on two samples of fine coal from the Thompson and Woodstock beds, respectively, of the Cahaba field to determine the influence of rash on table efficiency.This investigation has been made in connection with the study of coal-washing problems now being conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the different coal operators of Alabama."

This report describes work carried out by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the General Services Administration (GSA). Tests on nickel oxide reduction were conducted at the Pyrometallurgical Laboratory at Pitts-burgh and Bruceton, Pa., and at a rented plant at Canonsburg, Pa. Nickel oxide was reduced to sponge nickel, which was then melted to produce specification-grade nickel ingots containing a minimum of 98.50 percent nickel plus cobalt and a maximum of 1.00 percent cobalt. One purpose of this study was to determine if specification-grade nickel could be made from nickel oxide produced at the United States-Government-owned plant at Nicaro, Cuba, in pilot-plant scale operations involving direct reduction and melting processes. A second and equally important purpose was to obtain cost data on the pilot-plant operation to estimate the cost of producing ingot nickel at an annual rate of 12 million pounds. Laboratory tests verified that nickel oxide, in saggers and in the presence of anthracite fines and dolomite in the ratio of approximately 20:5:1, could be converted to sponge nickel when heated to approximately 1,900° F. for about 2 to 4 hours, depending on the size and density of the oxide charge. The tests also determined the type of saggers suitable for pilot-plant operations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines; Tuscaloosa Research Center, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under interagency Agreement No. 14-09-0078-1510, conducted a comprehensive sampling program of 10 upland disposal sites along the Alabama, Black Warrior, and Tombigbee River systems in Alabama. Samples from each site were characterized according to particle size, chemical analysis, mineralogical content, and potential end use. Additionally, samples were subjected to the Toxic Characteristic Leachate Procedure to determine the presence of potentially harmful heavy metals. Based on the results of these studies, each sample was determined to have properties amenable for use as aggregate in general-purpose portland cement concretes and certain asphalt concrete applications.

Small ion-exchange resin particles provide faster mass transport than conventional-sized beads. Unfortunately, high pressures are needed to pump solutions through columns containing small resin particles. It is preferable to disperse fine resins in the solution being treated. Screens have been used to separate the resin from the solution, but screens do not retain fines created by attrition of the resin particles. We have developed a separation process based on flotation, which relies on the surface characteristics of the resin, instead of size. The resin is conditioned with a surfactant before dispersing it in the solution to be treated; this increases the hydrophobicity of the resin sufficiently for froth flotation, without introducing surfactant directly into the solution. The surfactant adsorbed on the resin surface does not appear to impair the kinetics of metal ion removal. A flowsheet for an effluent treatment process is proposed; other applications are clearly possible.

"Inherent existence of different rooms (openings) along the extraction line in a depillaring panel provides an easy path for the goaf to encroach the working area. Each of these openings in a mechanized depillaring (MD) operation along the extraction line is supported by the roof bolt-based breaker line support (RBBLS) to restrict the goaf encroachment. Different field studies by Council for Scientific and Industrial Research - Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR) found that the RBBLS works effectively during the depillaring under the shadow of stable surrounding ribs/fenders only. It is observed that, generally, these natural supports experience high value of induced stresses after a large amount of void creation inside the goaf. The induced stress creates spalling/loosening of the sides of the natural supports. Field studies also found that the positions of the RBBLS at the goaf edge need to be adjusted according to the depth of this spalling/ loosening. However, a systematic study in field for the correct positioning of the breaker line as per the spalling/loosening under different site conditions is difficult. Therefore, on the basis of the data and guidance provided by these field investigations, a detailed parametric investigation was conducted in the laboratory on simulated models for an effective design of RBBLS in a MD panel. FLAC3D is used for the simulation of the depillaring, and the available empirical formulations for Indian coalfields are used for subsequent calibration. An analysis of stress redistribution for different stages of the MD in simulated models showed the significance of the nature of overlying strata/induced stress for the RBBLS design. Discussing some results of field studies, this paper presents results of the laboratory investigations for an effective design of the RBBLS.INTRODUCTIONContinuous Miner (CM)-based mechanized depillaring (MD) is an important issue for Indian coalfields, where huge amounts of coal are locked up in standing pillars (Dixit and Mishra, 2010). Considerable variations in site conditions of these developed pillars bring a number of technical challenges into consideration during their final extraction. One of these challenges is goaf encroachment/overriding during caving of the competent roof strata. Goaf encroachment/overriding can effectively be controlled, mainly, by suitable design of natural supports (rib/snook/fender). However, there is a requirement of applied supports against the immediate roof as a considerable portion of this roof is exposed due to the presence of different openings along the line of extraction. These applied supports act as a fulcrum at the goaf edge between the working area and the goaf to facilitate the break out of the hanging roof inside the goaf. This is called breaker line support. An effective breaker line support is important for the efficiency of a depillaring operation. Generally, MD adopts roof bolt-based breaker line support (RBBLS) at the goaf edge (Singh, et al., 2014). For the first time in India, roof bolts were applied at the goaf edge as RBBLS in a CM-based MD (Leeming, 2003). In the beginning, three rows of roof bolts were installed as primary and secondary breaker lines support. On the basis of the observations of instrumented bolts, only two rows of roof bolts were used as secondary RBBLS (Ram, et al., 2014). Now, most of the MD operations in India are using only two rows of bolts as RBBLS (Table 1). However, the strata mechanics studies at different MD operations showed interesting characteristics resulting from this support (Ram, et al., 2015)."

La demanda de tales cantidades de acero generará una mayor necesidad de materias primas: mineral de fierro, arrabio, chatarra, carbón coquizable, combustibles y energía, que en casi todos los casos apoyan la necesidad de emplear mineral de fierro directamente reducido. En ese sentido, el perfeccionamiento oportuno de una técnica de pre-reducción de amplia aplicación resulta importante y esencial.

Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes. Water is routed to the roof bolter from the main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3. The silica content of the roof material was high, ranging from 28.9% to 52.7% during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60%when cleaning the collector boxes. INTRODUCTION Currently, the dry vacuum dust collection system is the standard dust collector on roof bolters in underground coal mining. It has been proven to be an effective dust control to prevent roof bolter operators’ overexposure to coal mine respirable silica dust during roof bolting operations [Potts eta l, 2011 and Colinet, 2013]. The dry collection system works as follows: drill cuttings are vacuumed into the precleaner. The precleaner dumps oversized material onto the mine floor while undersized material enters the dust box via vacuum airflow produced by a blower. The cuttings entering the dust box are either deposited on the floor of the dust box or into a dust collector bag. The vacuum airflow leaves the dust box through a final filter which removes any small particles from the airflow. Figure 1 shows the internal view of two dry collection system boxes; one that does not use the dust collector bags and another that uses the dust collector bags. Dust collectors that use dust collector bags to contain material inside the dust collector box have been shown to provide better protection to roof bolter operators than dust collectors that do not use the bags [Listak and Beck 2008]. The dry collectors are very efficient at reducing respirable coal mine dust exposure from roof bolting activities. Recently, Blue Mountain Energy’s Deserado underground coal mining operation, outside Rangely, CO, made a modification to the dry collector system to convert it to a wet collector system with a unique exception from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for testing purposes. The wet collector system still uses a vacuum system to pull material from the vertical roof bolt hole, but incorporates a water spray nozzle located inside the dust box to wet the incoming material. The flow through the nozzle ranges from 1.9–7.6 lpm (0.5–2.0 gpm) at 0.69 MPa (100 psi). The conversion to the wet collector system removes the precleaner and the cyclones inside the dust box. The wet material (sludge) then empties through a specialized valve in the bottom of the box. The final filter is still used to prevent respirable dust from leaving the dust box through the exhaust. During operation, the wet collector dust box is opened and hosed clean after roof bolting every place. After every two entries the final filter is changed out. Figure 2 shows the inside of the wet collector box.

LLOYDMINSTER is the centre of a well developed agricultural area, lying on the Alberta-Saskatchewan interprovincial boundary in Township Fifty. The surrounding country is gently undulating, without any notable topographic features, but twenty-two miles to the north the North Saskatchewan river, and thirty miles to the south the Battle river, have cut deep valleys. In the spring of 1934, a wild-cat well (Lloydminster Gas Company's No. 1 well) was successful in striking a large flow of gas at a depth o 1,974 ? feet. The gas was piped into the town, a short distance south, and Lloyd-minster became the first Saskatchewan town to be served with natural gas. Following this discovery, other wells were sunk and, up to the present, thirteen wells have been drilled m what is here designated the Lloydminster area. Ten of these wells are in Saskatchewan and three in Alberta. Seven were successful in obtaining gas, three oil, and three have been unsuccessful. The area tested by this drilling is about eight thousand acres, six thousand of which can be considered as proved gas or oil land. To the south and west of Lloydminster, in the Province of Alberta, there are several areas in which oil and gas have been discovered. The Wainwright field lies nearly fifty miles to the southwest; Battleview, where recently gas has been discovered, is thirty miles west-southwest; and the Ribstone area is about thirty miles south and a little west. At Ribstone, a number of wells were drilled some years ago and there is a small production of oil. The data relating to the wells in the Lloydminster area that are recorded in this paper are taken from the records of the several companies operating in the field. The names of these companies are given on the map and on the type stratigraphic section (Figures 1 and 2). The author wishes to record his appreciation to Mr. R. H. Shaw and Mr. 0. C. Yates, both of Lloyd-minster, for much valuable information; also to Mr. E. Swain, of the Department of Natural Resources, Regina, with whom the writer has visited the field on several occasions, and who, by his enthusiasm and encouragement, has done much to forward the development of the area. The well samples were examined at Ottawa by officers of the Borings Division of the Geological Survey of Canada, who also made the interpretations of the logs. THE property of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, consists of eleven claims located on McKenzie island in Red lake. The mine is about 4,Y:l miles by water from the Howey townsite on the same lake, and about 95 miles north of Kenora, Ont. (see Figure 4). Mail and express are flown-in daily, winter and summer, from Sioux Lookout, Hudson, Kenora, and Winnipeg. All heavy supplies are freighted-in during the summer over a water route, using four marine railway portages, from Hudson, Ont., a distance of about 180 miles. During the winter, freighting over the same route is clone by tractor if necessary, but costs are three to four rimes the summer rate. Due to these conditions, large inventories of supplies must be kept on hand, varying from a spring minimum of $45,000 to a peak of $110,000 early in November. The average cost of all freight brought in from steel during 1937 was $0.01 per pound.

OUR early knowledge of history and geography attracted most of us to the mineral resources of South America. The romantic tales of the Spanish activities, which were curiously alluring, and Prescott's exceptional bi-Conquest histories-Mexico and Peru-no doubt fired our minds with the .then metallic wealth of the Spanish colonies. Later developments, intensified within the past eighty years, have, however, changed its fame which now rests on such metallics as copper and tin, and among the non-metallics on nitrate of soda and petroleum. South America proper, excluding Panama, is made up of thirteen countries, a coincident parity with our original thirteen States. Its area is given as 7,231,300 square miles, or slightly less than North America (8,037,000 square miles), is made up as follows:

Placement of coal combustion byproducts into abandoned sections of underground coal mines for the purpose of subsidence mitigation has been investigated in Illinois. Several handling and transportation systems have been examined. Prototype pneumatic and hydraulic placement systems have been developed and demonstrated. The demonstration site, Peabody No. 10 mine in Pawnee Illinois, is selected as a case study. It is found that, for a project of 5 years, transporting 150,000 tons of byproduct annually from a power plant located 32 km (20 miles) to the mine would cost $1.80 per ton and placement into underground would cost $3.07 per ton.

Two alloys Mg96.9Zn2.7Ho0.4 and Mg93Zn6Ho have been processed by direct extrusion at 300°C and 200/230°C to produce various microstructures containing icosahedral quasicrystalline phase with different grain sizes. The alloys were mechanically tested in tension and compression. The mechanical properties were related to the grain size and microstructures studied by transmission electron microscopy. The extruded alloys showed a mixture of nano-sized icosahedral and monoclinic Mg4Zn7 phase, as well as icosahedral phase particles a few hundred nanometers in size distributed in the matrix. Coarse icosahedral phase particles several micron in size also remained after extrusion. The alloys Mg96.9Zn2.7Ho0.4 and Mg93Zn6Ho extruded at the same temperature of 300°C produced very different grain sizes of 15 and 3 µm, respectively. The alloy Mg96.9Zn2.7Ho0.4 extruded at 200°C and Mg93Zn6Ho extruded at 230°C produced grain sizes of 0.7 µm and 1.5 µm, respectively. Both the alloys showed yield stresses of about 300 MPa in both tension and compression with elongations of about 18%. Hall-Petch parameters are calculated for the alloys.
