Orovalle Minerals S. L. operates a copper/gold mine in the Asturias region of northern Spain, with the operation dating back to December 1997. The feed to the El Valle mill, consisting of oxide/sulphide (skarn) mineralization, is highly variable, even on a shift by shift basis and presents challenges to the mill operating staff on a daily basis. The mineralogical characteristics of the ore are quite complex with copper present as native copper and sulphides as well as copper minerals with deleterious elements. Gold is present as native gold and electrum. The mill circuit includes SAG/ball mill grinding, gravity recovery of native copper and gold, flotation of copper concentrate, carbon-in-leach gold recovery and SO2/air cyanide destruction. The paper will provide a description of the different unit operations and present operating data of the mill operation.

Large diameter open-end pipe piles are increasingly used as deep foundations to support heavy onshore and offshore structures. During the driving process, several factors such as subsurface conditions, hammer type, hammer efficiency, pile type, plug conditions, temporarily increased base resistance, and loss of shaft resistance have direct impact on the driveability of large diameter open-end pipe piles. In a uniform subsurface condition, the unit shaft resistance increases with depth. Consequently, more resistance is accumulated as piles penetrate to greater depths which results in higher driving resistance. However, according to the friction fatigue analysis, the greater the number of shearing cycles occurring on a soil segment along the pile shaft, the greater the reduction of its shear resistance. As a consequence, since upper soil layers are subjected to a greater number of blows than those at greater depths, they have a relatively lower resistance compared to what would be calculated with standard geotechnical analysis methods. As a result of this progressive and nonuniform loss of shaft resistance with driving, blowcounts tend to increase at a lower rate than expected from traditional analyses. This paper discusses one of the approaches to the driveability analysis with the geotechnical friction fatigue consideration. It also shows comparisons between predicted driveability obtained from wave equation analysis and field driving records. All analyses were performed for a 2.134 m (7.0 ft) diameter open-end pipe pile installed at a total depth of 192.90 m (554 ft). Two separate static resistance and wave equation analyses were completed for the case study presented in this paper: 1) Friction Fatigue analysis based on the recommendations of Alm and Hamre (2001), subsequently referred to as the FF model, and 2) Standard Driveability analysis based on soil set- up factors, hereafter referred to as the SD model in this paper. Results from analyses included the shaft resistance distributions compared to the result of the signal matching analyses determined from the pile dynamic measurement. Furthermore, predicted blowcounts were compared to observed blowcounts during the pile driving. The comparison analyses indicated a 54.4 percent resistance loss of the Static Resistance during Driving (SRD) due to the geotechnical friction fatigue corresponding to a 46 percent reduction in total resistance. The analyses also showed that average predicted blowcounts using the friction fatigue were 6.4 percent lower than measured blowcounts, whereas, the standard driveability approach showed 42.1 percent higher blowcounts compared to the blowcounts shown in the driving log values.

This volume describes the use of the Penn State Mine Ventilation Simulator (PSU/MVS) to model existing mine ventilation systems and, in addition, to evaluate the effect of system modifications. Ventilation survey methods designed to insure computer input data of sufficient accuracy for simulation purposes are covered in comprehensive detail, including quantity and pressure measurement and fan performance testing. The development of input data from ventilation survey results is discussed and illustrated by the use of an actual field survey. Two programs, written in FORTRAN IV with WATFIV, are presented to calculate airway head losses from altimeter pressure measurements. An existing coal mine ventilation system is analyzed and modifications to the system are simulated and evaluated. In addition the application of the PSU/MVS to non-coal mines is briefly discussed. An extensive bibliography on ventilation surveying and simulation is included.

Knowledge of fuel qualities is of ultimate importance for the efficiency of chemical plants or power stations. Although most blending yards are equipped with automatic samplers and the derived samples are processed in the laboratory, the quality variation of the blended product may still be strong. This is caused by several reasons. First of all the process of sampling, crushing, dividing and analysis is time consuming. Results are available only with a delay of two to 24 hours. During this time blending is operated without knowledge of the main parameters. Conveyors with high throughput require expensive sampling systems capable of handling samples which are representative. The frequency of sampling needs also to be high in order to be representative. This results in high maintenance costs and also downtime of the sampling system.Online analysis of bulk materials has matured over time and today it can supplement but not replace laboratory analysis. As an example, J&C Bachmann has realised a coal quality monitoring system on the coal supply of a South African coal processing plant. The plant consumes ~42 Mt of coal per annum. The blending yard consists of two sets of three heaps where coal of six different mines is blended according to the factory’s requirement. From there, the blended coal is fed to the factory on two different belts.In 2010 the plant installed a TEXAS X-ray fluorescence analyser as a trial. It was tested under different conditions on several belts before the customer decided to install six TEXAS analysers on the feed belts to the stackers and two more analysers on the reclaimer belts. All analysers are installed directly on the belt and not on a substream.During the test period blending strategies were developed in close cooperation between the customer and J&C Bachmann. The use of the analysers in conjunction with the blending model has proven that the variation of the reclaimed coal quality was decreased significantly, which results in increased process performance and significant cost savings.CITATION:Bachmann, C C, Bachmann, J F, Cipold, M P and Ha, J, 2017. In designing climate exposed soil structures such as caps and covers over mine waste it is necessary to include the wetting and drying influences of the local climate in order to accurately predict the net water, vapour and oxygen fluxes across the ground surface and through the base of the covers. The most advanced evaporative flux modelling tools currently available to practitioners have been limited to rigorous one-dimensional models (ie SoilCover) or semi-empirical two-dimensional models (ie Hydrus-2D). It is common practice to use the rigorous one-dimensional evaporative flux model results to develop a surface boundary function that can then be applied within a saturated/unsaturated two-dimensional model. However, this is not an ideal situation and results in a further approximation of the real system being modelled. This paper will highlight the use of a new modelling tool, VADOSE/W, which brings existing, rigorously formulated evaporative flux theory into the familiar setting of a two-dimensional model. The model is enhanced for simultaneous two-dimensional oxygen gas transport analysis, which has direct application in the mine waste industry. A key focus of the paper will be addressing the limitations of one-dimensional analysis for cover systems on sloping and hummocky terrain.

Tenova Pyromet has developed innovative technologies for copper smelting and electric slag cleaning furnaces. Based on client feedback and requirements, innovative designs have been developed to address key design areas and improve furnace reliability, operability and hygiene. These developments include the NovaLance™ lance system to prevent lance bending on top submerged lance furnaces, the SlagFlo™ slag tapping flow control device to better control bath levels and tapping rate for granulation, and an electrode seal for improved sealing directly onto the electrode casing to allow water-cooled electrode components to be located above the furnace roof. The potential application and benefits of these innovative designs are discussed. INTRODUCTION Tenova Pyromet has a long history in the engineering and supply of innovative electric furnace and related equipment for the base metals and platinum industries. Recently Tenova Pyromet has used its furnace equipment design experience to engineer innovative solutions for top submerged lance (TSL) furnaces, and potentially other furnace technologies. These equipment design solutions are developed to address specific operating challenges and operator requirements. Three of these innovative equipment developments are discussed in this paper. First the NovaLance™ lance technology to prevent lance bending during operation in TSL furnaces, such as used for primary copper smelting, is described. Lance bending has been identified as a significant problem for TSL furnace operators as it causes down time and affects furnace availability. The SlagFlo™ device to control the slag flow rate during tapping has been developed based on specific requirements in the mineral wool industry. The SlagFlo™ device can be used to control slag bath levels in primary smelting, converting and slag cleaning furnaces for base metals including copper. In addition, it can be remotely activated for the safe closing of slag tapholes located upstream from a water granulation system. Finally, Tenova Pyromet developed an electrode seal that seals directly onto an electrode surface. This is a special requirement related to base metals and platinum electric smelting and slag cleaning furnaces where furnace operators prefer to keep the water-cooled electrode equipment above the furnace roof. The seal can be used to seal directly onto the potentially hot and uneven surface of Söderberg, pre-baked and graphite electrodes.

An important requirement in every geological quality control program is that the identity and grades of the control samples (duplicates, certified reference materials (CRMs), and blanks) must remain æblindÆ to the analytical laboratory. Once the entity to be controlled is aware of relevant details of the control process, such as the identity of the control samples, the objectivity may be lost and the control may no longer be completely valid. Whereas the blind insertion of field duplicates and coarse blanks can be easily conducted at site, simultaneously with the sampling process, the rest of the control samples should be inserted into the batches during or after sample preparation and prior to assaying, in order to ensure a proper assessment of precision, accuracy and assay contamination, independent of the internal quality control of the laboratory. Such a procedure raises the concern that blind insertion of crushed or pulverised material in sample batches prior to assaying could represent a breach in the chain of custody principle, as samples would have to be temporarily returned to the custody of a non-laboratory person in charge of the insertions. In this seemingly conflict scenario, what should we give up? Do we maintain the strict chain of custody, knowing that the laboratory will be aware of the identity of some of the control samples, or that some duplicates will not be true same-batch duplicates? Do we ignore chain of custody issues to maintain the anonymity of the control samples and insert blind same-batch duplicates, CRMs and blanks? Is it possible to do blind insertions without breaching the chain of custody? Current NI 43-101 and JORC requirements, as well as real-world QA/QC and sample security practices, are discussed in light of AMECÆs approach to the solution of this apparent dilemma.

Subsurface injection of liquid and slurry-type industrial waste is being used as a means of waste disposal. This survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines shows that the method can be economically and environmentally attractive if the proper precautions are taken, especially when the alternative is cursory treatment and discharge at the surface. Attention is called to petroleum technology and experience that can be applied to subsurface waste injection. Part 1 of this report is a discussion of the general aspects of subsurface waste-injection systems. Part 2 is a general discussion and review of the literature concerning the geologic formations available for injection in the United States. Part 3 is a discussion if 15 case histories including information on the source and nature of the waste and the geology, surface equipment, well completion, and operation of the systems.

The rare metals are becoming increasingly important to our industries. Rare-metal alloys have properties which indicate that we are only on the threshold of the possibilities of their utilization, not only in making nonferrous alloys, but also as special steels. Not only are their uses broadening rapidly, but the metals are affecting our industries in other ways. The oxides and some salts are used as pigments; others have medicinal value. The pure metals are made into filaments for incandescent lamps, and targets for X-ray tubes. By their efficient use in alloys, the weight of automobiles is reduced, • and the wear and tear on tires and roads is thus minimized; in machine shops they help to give greater efficiency to tools and reduce production costs. Their development has marked a milestone in the progress of civilization. There has been considerable uncertainty regarding analytical methods for the rare metals. A great deal has been published, but the weak and the strong points of the various methods have not been investigated as carefully as is needed. The Bureau of Mines at its Rare Metals station in Colorado necessarily had to do a great deal of analytical work in connection with the metals covered by this bulletin, which aims to give the results of the experience so acquired. No claim for much originality is made, although some published methods given have been modified, and some new ones have been developed by members of the staff. The principal methods available were studied critically, and it is to be hoped that the work will assist those interested in analytical work in connection with the metals named.

A model for developing electric discharges between sulfide mineral (pyrite) particles under high-voltage nanosecond pulses in a liquid medium (water) is considered. A possibility of electrical breakdowns of liquid gaps between particles under nanosecond pulses is shown. This probability and the energy released in discharge channels depend strongly on the sulfide conductivity.

The mineralogy and grain size distribution of phases in a steelmaking slag and experimental products from the heating of the slag under various conditions were determined to explore the possibility of recycling of the iron and manganese to the blast furnace. The steelmaking slags consisted of three major phases: dicalcium silicate, dicalcium ferrite, and Mg-Mn-wustite. Most of the phosphorus was contained in the dicalcium silicate and to lesser extent in the dicalcium ferrite. Due to the fine grain size of the dicalcium silicate, grinding and magnetic separation required pretreatment to increase the grain size and hence the liberation. Experiments on a steelmaking slag were conducted by heating the slag to 1633-1748°K( and slow-cooling in an inert atmosphere at various rates with or without the addition of fluorspar (CaF2) as a flux. Grain size distribution analyses of the starting material and the slow-cooled products were performed using the SEM-IPP area scan method and the QEM*SEM linear scan method. Comparable and reproducible results were obtained on the same sample using both methods. A size versus volume percent plot showed the increased grain growth most effectively. Examples of the grain size distributions obtained were used to show that a higher soaking temperature prior to slow-cooling, a slower cooling rate, and the addition of fluorspar to the slag promoted grain growth.

The most critical challenge for any large size storage structures to be constructed on soft compressible soils is bearing capacity and consolidation settlements. Consolidation is the time dependent phenomena, as expulsion of water from soil voids on application of external load will take longer period. It is mainly influenced by soil consistency, permeability, thickness of compressible stratum and presence of free draining layers. This study deals with the foundation solution of a large size Mounded Storage Vessel (MSV) to be constructed on thick compressible stratum whose loading intensity is around 155 kPa and the estimated settlements are greater than 400 mm. Hence, the foundation solution using vibro stone columns is adopted as an effective technique to address the challenges of excess settlements and inadequate bearing capacity. Further to keep settlements within the permissible limit of 50 mm, preloading technique with 60% of actual loading intensity will be utilized. The consolidation analysis of stone column reinforced foundations is carried based on the method given by Han and Ye (2001). The quality of the stone columns is ensured by real time quality control measures and the performance of the stone columns shall be ensured by vertical load tests. Ground settlements was closely monitored with proper instrumentations and the actual degree of consolidation has been verified by Asaoka’s (1978) method.

This paper describes the key components of the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine design and the development and construction status of the mine. Drawpoint production from GBC will be initiated in 2018 following the closure of the Grasberg open pit. Full production of 160 000 t/d is planned for 2024, which will make it a 20-year time period between initial access development in 2004 and full production.Diluted ore reserves are about 1 Bt at a grade of 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.78 g/t Au. The mine plans some 2400 drawpoints on a 20 m × 30 m drawbell spacing in a 700 000 m2 footprint using the El Teniente layout. The drawpoint opening sequence includes five production blocks, the first two of which are scheduled to be undercut simultaneously in 2018. Ore is transported using diesel-powered load-haul-dumps to a series of orepasses and then delivered via loading chutes to a rail haulage system, which delivers the ore to a three gyratory crusher complex. Crushed ore is transported to the mill stockpiles via dual inclined conveyors.Development and construction of the substantial fixed facilities are now well underway. Primary access for personnel and materials is via the 6 km Ali Boediardjo (AB) adits. A service shaft will hoist personnel and materials from the AB adits level to the various operating levels. Shaft commissioning is scheduled for late 2015. The rail haulage system installation and construction is in progress and is due to be commissioned in 2017, which is timed to coincide with the commissioning of the ore handling system. Ventilation is provided through a series of large intake and exhaust drifts, and two of the four main fans have been commissioned. "Due to the increasing amount of gangues in iron ores, a beneficiation process is required more as a preliminary step for ironmaking process. However, mechanical grinding and washing of iron ore needs tremendous effort that increases operating cost. Therefore, there is a necessity of a novel approach to ironmaking which can tolerate considerable amounts of silica or alumina. In the present study, a high alumina-carbon composite pellet was examined for an ironmaking process. The effect of compositional changes in the CaO-FexOy-Al2O3-SiO2 oxide system on the reduction of carbon composite pellets was investigated in a purpose built thermo-gravimetric analyser (TGA) at 1473K (1200¦C). As a result, alumina increased the reaction rate of carbon composite pellets by increasing surface area, while silica decreased the reaction rate by lowering surface area of samples. Infrared gas analysis assisted with the reaction kinetics of carbon composite pellets through measurement of CO and CO2 in off-gases. The paper includes a short discussion of results, tabular data, and individual analyses of 16 California crude oils. Analyses of other oil from California have been published in Reports of Investigations 25954/, 26085/, 28466/, and 30747/. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting of the samples vas facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

The east span of the 3.5 km long SF-Oakland Bay Bridge is supported by different types of foundations along its span. Starting from the west, its first 460 m section comprising twin concrete box-girders is supported by sands and rock on Yerba Buena Island. A 620 m long steel suspension span then bridges a 25 m deep channel that is formed in sediments overlying rock. Twin concrete box girder structures, each 2.4 km long, complete the stretch over the remainder of San Francisco Bay to the engineered earth fill landing at its east end. For most of its length, the Skyway bridges water 3 to 10 m deep over soft surficial Young Bay Mud. The foundation types include spread footings with hold-downs, steel and concrete piles that are set in drilled rock sockets up to 3 m in diameter and 2.5 m diameter steel tubular piles driven to penetrations of up to 100 m. The design and construction-related considerations are presented. The different foundation types, influences of the site geology and earthquake demands on the substructures are discussed. The seismic motions of the bridge superstructures and substructures, as well as the depth-varying soil motions, influenced the foundation design. Together with performance-based design criteria, including post-earthquake footing displacement limits, these seismic demands influenced various aspects of the foundation design, including the use of battered and vertical piles.

This Information Circular describes the development of block-caving methods and practices by the Miami Copper Co. at the Miami mine in Gila County, Arizona. It is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. This report gives a history of the district and outlines early prospecting and exploration including methods of sampling and estimation of ore tonnage and value at the Miami mine. Early mining methods are described, particularly those that influenced developments in the caving method. Mine exploration, development, and operating methods for block caving are described with particular attention to those factors, physical, economic, engineering, and managerial that have improved efficiency in the mining operations over a long productive period. Extraction, ventilation, wage system, safety, water supply, power plant, and shop facilities are discussed. The last section gives a brief sumary of such costs as are available for publication.

"The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. RNC's principal asset is the Dumont Nickel project (Dumont project) located in the established Abitibi mining camp, 25 km northwest of Amos, Quebec. RNC acquired a 100% interest in the Dumont property in 2007. The mineral claims covering the Dumont deposit are currently held 98% by RNC and 2% by Ressources Québec.The Dumont project is located in the province of Quebec in the municipalities of Launay and Trécesson approximately 25 km by road northwest of the city of Amos, 60 km northeast of the industrial and mining city of Rouyn-Noranda and 70 km northwest of the city of Val d’Or."
