Hand forces are important factors for risk assessment of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 Grip force is one of the most important force components in the operation of powered hand tools. A considerable number of studies on grip force have been reported. It is well known that the grip force applied on a cylindrical handle is not uniformly distributed on each axis across the center of the handle cross-section.2 Therefore, maximum and minimum orientations of grip force exist around the handle. Such orientations have not been clearly identified. In a recently proposed international standard (ISO/CD 15230, 2005),3 it is stated that “the direction of the main gripping force is generally parallel to the z-axis defined in ISO 8727.” 4 This assertion is questionable, and further examinations are required. The objective of this study was to establish a fundamental theory on the distribution of the grip force around cylindrical handles. Methods As shown in Fig. 1, the grip force is defined as a vector composed of normal and shear components (FN & FT) in this study. Fig. 2 shows the hand coordinate system defined in this study, together with the ISO systems.1,4 Based on this novel grip force definition, we derived four fundamental properties and a theorem. More significantly, we formulated a novel hypothesis: similar to Mohr’s circle of stress, the normal and shear components can be represented approximately using an ellipse on the plane of the two force coordinates, as shown in Fig. 3. The maximum and minimum grip normal forces are termed as the first principal grip force (F1) and the second principal grip normal force (F2), respectively. The paper point out a new procedure to calculate the volumetric distribution of rock fragments. The method combines the practicality of digital image processing of the rock surface with the theoretical volume calculations based on principles and laws of fractal geometry. The final volumetric distribution curve is compared with the results from traditional sieving indicating close agreement.

The resource industry must prepare for the inevitable shift towards automation as an operational objective. Although this may seem like a distant concern, many mining companies and equipment manufacturers are already conducting full-scale automation trials. The necessary technology is advancing at a rapid pace yet the training of people to support it at the trade level lags far behind. Those given the responsibility of installing and maintaining automated equipment in the mining environment require a unique set of skills and knowledge. These training needs demand attention to ensure that the wider uptake of automation is sustainable and achieves its full potential.   This paper documents work undertaken by CRCMining and the Mining Industry Skills Centre towards establishing a training framework seeking to address the needs of trade level personnel tasked with the support of automation equipment. A comprehensive definition of the skills and knowledge required by the hypothetical automation-specialised tradesperson is presented. The training pathway identified for these personnel is also described. This work forms part of the Mining Industry Skills Centre's Automation Skills Formation Strategy, funded by the Queensland Department of Education and Training.

Difficulty has always attended the evaluation of rock breaking energy available from explosives, owing to the complexity of the way in which it is released, and the destructive amplitude of the pressures. Many problems have arisen and continue with this difficulty, including the following: I. Formulation of improved compositions to deliver appropriate energy levels to the blasthole walls, or to deliver previous results at improved cost. How appropriate is it to use various ingredients, such as Aluminium, water, salt? 2. Claims over energy issues, resulting in wasted time and expense, over things that sound good in theory but are very difficult to tie down. 3. Purchasers of explosives make decisions based on claimed “Bang per Buck” from different manufacturers, where the estimate of “Bang”comes from simplistic numbers from various, very unequal detonation codes. The above problems are escalating as time progresses. Using the high level IDeX PC 2000 detonation code, we have found a way to portray the differences between formulations in a way which relates to their breaking effect in the field. The basic method is to plot the adiabat from the detonation state to full expansion in units which express the practical implications. Energy alone cannot deliver results, so we use the curve to examine its manifestations: pressure and temperature. Internal energy is plotted with these. The method displaces relative energy numbers, as it portrays the context in which the energy is available. It is used here to compare an ANFO, an emulsion and a doped emulsion, as well as the effect of Aluminium. The effect of the shock pressure regimes and temperature correlate well with what is seen in the field.

All 231 Canadian primary gold mines that produced from 1946 to 2004 were analyzed with respect to their production and economic characteristics. Trend analysis revealed that the average annual capacity of Canadian gold mines, as measured by ore processed or gold produced, has increased over time. Conversely, the average grade of gold mines has decreased over time. The distribution of gold output is highly uneven: for example, the 22 giant mines producing more than 100 t (metric tonnes) of gold account for 62% of total output. Small mines producing less than 10 t Au account for 54% of total mines, but less than 4% of total gold. Each historical mine in the database was evaluated on the basis of a set of economic and technical assumptions to determine if it would be economic to develop today. Based on the net present value using an 8% discount rate, only 103 of the 231 mines were determined to be economic. About 80% of the uneconomic mines had less than 10 t of contained gold, and 63% had less than 5 t. It is concluded that these small mines would not be viable today due to a combination of real capital cost increases, and more stringent permitting and environmental regulations. The implication is that future gold supply in Canada will hinge on the discovery and development of a new generation of larger mines. Given that only one giant mine has been discovered in the past 20 years, it seems likely that gold output will decrease in the future.

"Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. In this study, reduction behaviours of Turkish chromite concentrate (48 % Cr2O3, 13.30 % FeO, 18.33 % MgO, 12.37 % Al2O3, 5.76 % SiO2) and nickel oxide by Fe-C alloy in graphite crucible were investigated. In the first stage of experiments, steel scraps were melted in graphite crucibles and were saturated with carbon at 1600 °C and 30 min. In the second stage, mixtures of different amount of chromite concentrate, nickel oxide and flux additives (CaO,SiO2 and CaF2) were charged into the graphite crucible containing the Fe-C alloy and heated to 1600 °C for different reduction times (0-180 min) under argon gas. The highest Cr and Ni con-tents in alloys were found as 11.41 and 14.37 % and the highest Cr and Ni recoveries were found as 88 and94 %, respectively at 180 min.

Because of insufficient funds for printing, the Bureau of Mines was unable to publish its annual bulletin covering accidents at metal mines in the United States for the year 1933. A brief mimeographed summary of the principal statistical data for that year was released to the public late in 1934. Since then reports for 1934 have been received from the mining companies, and in order to avoid further delay in releasing this information to the mining industry and others interested in the prevention of accidents in mining, statistics for both years are presented in this publication with a minimum of interpretation and comment. The fatal-accident rate for the metal and nonmetallic mines (excluding coal mines) of the United States was more favorable in 1933 than in any previous year since 1911, the first year for which the Bureau of Mines obtained reports from the operators. Further progress was made in 1934, when the fatality rate was even lower than that of 1933. On the other hand, the nonfatal-accident rate, which had reached its lowest level in 1932, increased in 1933 and increased further in 1934, although not to such an extent as to prevent the rate for either of those 2 years from being better than that for any year previous to r1931.

"The importance of the oxygen content of sulphide mineral pulps in determining which reactions occur, and their subsequent influence on flotation behaviour is grossly underestimated in most operating concentrators. While pH is routinely monitored, Eh and dissolved oxygen measurements are obtained infrequently. However, dissolved oxygen measurements in conjunction with other pulp chemical parameters (i.e. pH, Eh, and EDTA extractable metal ion analysis), can provide valuable insight into where and what type of reactions are occurring within a circuit. Unfortunately, these readings yield “instantaneous” measurements of the pulp chemical parameters.What is needed is a means of establishing how reactive a pulp is, and how this reactivity changes as components of the system are manipulated. Oxygen demand provides an opportunity to do this. Several attempts at measuring the oxygen demand of a pulp have been made in the past with varying degrees of success. Most notable among these are Noranda and BOC Gases.Learning from these experiences, Magotteaux have developed the MagO2 ® demand vessel to measure the oxygen demand of mineral pulps. This paper described the apparatus, and through a case study on Broken Hill lead/zinc ore demonstrates how the MagO2 ® demand vessel is used.INTRODUCTIONThe role of oxygen in flotation is complex. While a considerable body of work exists demonstrating the strong involvement of oxygen in the interactions between sulphide minerals and collector (Gaudin and Finkelstein, 1965; Gaudin, 1974; Woods, 1984; Laajalehto, Nowak and Suoninen, 1993), the presence of oxygen can also affect the oxidation state of sulphide and non-sulphide minerals, which can impact on their flotation behaviour. Further, sulphide mineral oxidation is related to their oxygen demand (Spira and Rosenblum, 1994)."

The Particulate Mineralogy Unit has been established at the College Park, Maryland, Metallurgy Research Center. The Particulate Mineralogy Unit will have the responsibility within the Bureau of Mines for the characterization of particulate minerals which have potential for adverse environmental effects. The Unit will provide a focal point for identifying particulates in connection with environmental problems related to the activities of agencies such as OSHA, HEW, EPA, and MESA. The Particulate Mineralogy Unit is seeking to clarify the ambiguities surrounding the mineralogy of and terminology used for asbestiform minerals and other mineral particles. The Unit?s investigations of the morphology, composition, and structure of asbestiform minerals and their nonasbestos analogs have made its members recognized experts in this field. The information which it develops on the characterization of asbestos and other particulate mineral forms such as silica should provide a technically rational basis for decisions by regulatory agencies. "Extracting boric acid from saline brine by boron specific ion-exchange resin was investigated. Effects of resin amount, temperature, time and stirring speed on boron adsorption rate were studied in the experiments. The results indicated that the XSC-700 resin showed excellent boron absorbability and it performed better property for elution. The maximum boron adsorption capacity was 6.16 mg/ml in the optimum conditions: the resin concentration of 5 ml/(100 ml brine), the temperature of 60°C, the time of 5-6h and the stirring speed of 100 r/min. Boron was eluted from the resin with HCl and boric acid was crystallized by evaporating the eluate. The product of boric acid was in pure form as confirmed by XRD and other analysis techniques.1 IntroductionBoron has a number of minerals in nature such as tincal, colemanite, ulexite, and kemite, etc. [1-2]. Boron and its compounds are chemical materials of significant value. The principal industrial uses of boron compounds are in the production of glass, porcelain, enamels and detergents. Other uses include fertilizers, metallurgy, and nuclear shielding [3-4]. In recent years, because of the large-scale mining boron ore, ore resources are drained gradually. With the development of science and technology, the boron mineral resources will be unsatisfied with the future requirement. There exits abundant boron resources in salt lakes which cover about 40% of the total reserves in China. If we can obtain boron from salt lakes, it will produce great economic interests [5-6]. Therefore, actively seeking boron from salt lake and other resources in suitable conditions has become a hot spot in the research organizations of boron resources development and utilization in the world [7].There are many methods such as acid crystallization, solvent extraction and ion exchange processes suggested effective for boron extraction from aqueous solutions. Acid crystallization method has the shortcomings of complicated procedures, the pollution caused by hydrochloric and other ingredients returning to salt lakes during the extraction process. Several empirical equations to estimate coal pillar strength have been presented in academic studies. The development processes of these equations are similar and are usually obtained by fitting the mathematical function (curve) to field data. One of the best criteria to evaluate the quality of fitting for such equations is the correlation coefficient R2, which has limited applicability. It is necessary to calculate the correlation coefficient access to the initial data for which the equation is presented; this is impossible for many coal pillar strength formulas. This paper presents a new approach based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude to compare the coal pillar strength. This approach utilizes a combination of parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), function type and degrees of freedom. The confidence level of constants is subsequently formed and the correlation coefficient becomes more comprehensive. Therefore, for an effective comparison, the efficiency and accuracy of coal pillar strength formula can be used. Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. Security concerns have prompted the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the use of recording systems on all vessels holding materials used for blasting; a new regulation is expected in the near future. By measuring the strain developed in the legs of vessels with bolt-on sensors, it is possible to monitor the weight of vessel contents. Several companies make this type of sensor and recent versions give the required accuracy. This paper describes two generations of sensor, the second generation having a simpler method of installation that uses standard power and hand tools. Three types of indicator are available to monitor the material weight. 1) A simple electronic bar-graph indicator with a digital weight display. 2) A touch-screen display showing bar-graphs of multiple silos with digital weight displays plus their associated trend graphs, recent readings and an alarm log. 3) A data acquisition unit which acquires the weight digitally from up to 32 vessels and stores the raw and filtered date and time stamped data in a local computer database. This local computer then transmits the data via an Internet connection to a secure central database which allows the weights of all the storage vessels for a company to be viewed anytime and anywhere via the Internet. Historical trend graphs can be viewed and the data can be uploaded into an Excel file for further processing; for example to determine filling or discharge amounts. In addition, E-mail and SMS (Short Message Service) text alerts can be sent automatically when selected alarm levels are reached. Current research and development includes connection of vessels to the central database by a cellular wireless modem when a local computer or Internet connection is not available, as well as connection of remotely located vessels to a central point via “Wi-Fi bridge" radio data links. Future versions will include digital I/O (Inputs and Outputs) to record, for example, activation of filling and discharge devices as well as opening and closing of doors.

"Foreword by Ren BryceSenior engineer, Freeport-McMoRan, Oro Valley, AZ, USAThe eighth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the national SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO. A total of 33 students presented their work at the poster competition. The competition started in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. The first-place winner receives $1,000; the second, $500; the third, $250; and the fourth through seventh, $200. All remaining students receive $100. All of the students also receive a complimentary ticket to the MPD Luncheon. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates.Graduate winnersKaustubh Shrimali won first place for researching “The influence of starch in amine adsorption by quartz in the reverse flotation of iron ore.” Venkata Atluri received second for studying “The effect of polysaccharides on bubble attachment at talc surfaces.” Jennifer Galvin placed third for investigating “A novel approach to alkali pug bake for the extraction of rare earth elements from monazite concentrate.” In the fourth through seventh places were Amy Richins, Sumedh Gostu, Brett Carlson and Chris Vass.Undergraduate winnersNestor Santa earned first place for exploring “Copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards.” Cassidy O’Connell received second place for conducting “Performance analysis of CMC in high talc copper sulfide flotation systems.” Catalina Vanegas won third place for examining “Cyanidation tests and pretreatments to recover gold from a refractory ore in Colombia.” Kylie Boyce, Michael Archambo and Pritam Sinha were in the fourth through sixth places.Everyone benefits from attending the student poster competition. The students are able to display their work to future employers, and industry professionals can talk to up-and-coming engineers. In the synthesis of diamond, the precursor graphite must present a degree of crystallinity to assure optimum yield and quality for the transformed crystals. X-ray diffraction, SEM and TEM analyses were carried out to investigate the structural and morphologic transformations produced in natural graphite by high pressure-high temperature treatment. The present study had as its objective to characterize the morphological and structural changes suffered by a natural graphite that was subjected to high pressure and high temperature treatments in the region of diamond thermodynamic stability. The results indicate that the material that constitutes the gasket, for the deformable capsule, could act as catalyst in the graphite recrystallization process.

INTRODUCTION The city of Alexandria, Egypt is located on the Mediterranean Sea at the northwestern edge of the Nile River delta. The city is approximately 26 km long and 3 km wide bounded by the sea to the north and Lake Maryut to the south. The Alexandria Project is split into 2 phases: phase one included designs to update two existing primary wastewater treatment plants, five pump stations and over 75 km of sewer pipe, 18 km o f which is tunneled, (1500mm to 2750mm ID pipe). Currently the pipeline and pump stations are under construction. Phase two of the project includes expanding both the capacity of the treatment plants and the limits of the collection system. Included in this system expansion is the 3.5 km long, 2250mm ID Central Zone Conveyance, which is the subject of this paper. The project is under the direction of The Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). It is an USAID funded joint venture of two American firms, CH2M - Hill and Metcalf & Eddy who share equally the major portion of the work and two Egyptian firms, Engineering Consultants Group (ECG) and Wairth Associates who are also partners. The venture, which is both design and construction management, worked under the name Wastewater Consultants Group, WWCG. Michael Gilbert was Chief o f the Geotechnical Department and Project Engineer for the Central Zone Conveyance. Gennaro Avolio was Geotechnical Exploration Manager for the Alexandria Wastewater Project.

The safety record established by the coal-mining industry of the United States during 1934, although not as favorable as that for the previous year, was better than the record for any other year during the period 1930-34 for which complete figures covering fatal and nonfatal accidents at the mines are available. The number of accidents was 89.98 per million man-hours of employment compared with 86.74 for the year 1933, the latter being the lowest rate in any of the 5 years referred to. The rate was 105.60 for 1930, the first year covered by available data. Employment increased in 1934; the number of workers represented an increase of 8 percent over the year 1933, man-shifts of labor increased 16 percent, and the number of man-hours of labor increased 7 percent. The total number of man-hours of employment also exceeded the number reported for 1932, and was almost equal to the record for 1931.

This report details work performed and results obtained in a study of the water management aspects of oil shale mining and retorting in the Piceance Creek Basin. Three specific sites were investigated, and optimal water management systems for both conventional and in-situ extraction processes were generated. Water-related legal and environmental constraints on development were identified and the water management schemes were developed in compliance with these regulations. Limitations on shale oil production implied by limited water supplies were evaluated. Potential Basin-wide effects of development were evaluated using a computer model, and mitigation strategies were developed. Recommendations for additional investigation and analyses were presented.
