The resources of vanadium –titanium magnetite in China are very abundant, most of which are used to prepare titanium-rich materials. Titanium pigment, electric welding bar and titanium sponge are made from titanium-rich materials such as synthetic rutile and titanium slag etc. To fully utilize titanium resources, many production methods of titanium-rich materials were proposed. In this article, authors review on methods of preparing titanium-rich materials which are Electric Smelting Process, Reduction-rust Process, Selective Chlorination Process, Acid Leaching Process, and sum the advantages and disadvantages of them. Existing problems and possible tendency of production methods of titanium-rich materials are also discussed.

This report will be given in two sections. The first sec¬tion outlines techniques and equipment to form almond shaped fluorspar briquettes by means of briquet presses, and the second section outlines techniques of the balling disc. PART I - BRIQUET PRESSES Fluorspar has been briquetted for a number of years and the so called "peach pit" briquet is known to many steelmen. Present production is estimated at over 100,000 tons annually. Slide 1 shows an assortment of various sizes and shapes of briquettes. It is possible to form fluorspar into almost any configuration of briquet. For safety on the melting floor, pillow type briquets are preferred. Ease of mechanical handling and durability of the product are facil¬itated by an almond shape. The dimensions of the almond can vary from 1-in. to 1-1/2-in. in length, from 13/16-in. to 1-in. in width and from 1/2-in. to 1-in. in thickness. The type of equipment to pro¬duce almond shaped fluorspar briquettes is shown in Slide 2. Here we have a Komarek-Greaves and Company 300 ton briquettor equipped with almond rolls. This machine is capable of producing fluorspar briquettes at a rats of 30 tons per hour with power consumption of 35 hp per ton par hour.

A detailed description is given of radio apparatus for controlling a coincidence outfit for relative gravity measurements. This is probably of little interest, since many types of apparatus could be used. The general method employed is the interesting thing about this paper. As long ago as 1883 von Sterneck made a proposal to control two coincidence boxes with the, seine, clock, and many persons have suggested the use of radio for this purpose. In accomplishing this it would appear to the reviewer that this method is probably inferior to that used by the Marland Oil Co., but Berger and Brückner must be given the credit for important advances in the coincidence method. In their apparatus a clock at a central station actuates a relay, which operates a short-wave transmitter (40 m.). At the receiving station the amplification is accomplished at low frequencies... The signal operates a relay which moves a slitted screen in a coincidence apparatus. This screen has been improved considerably, to decrease the mean error in observing a coincidence. As usual, a telescope is used to observe the flashes of light. It has a scale in its focal plane and positions of successive flashes are easily read off and recorded by a second observer. This makes possible' a: higher accuracy in determining the exact instant at which coincidence would have occurred at the zero point on this scale. This method obviously depends on the constance of the mechanical and electrical lag inn both sending and receiving apparatus, and may be adversely criticized from this standpoint. -- A. E. Ruark.

A realistic simulation model has been used for designing longwall mining, especially for solving operational problems. This paper describes background, development, validation and some applications of the simulation model for mining people who are unfamiliar with O.R. or computer technique, as a simple planning tool. The following items were established: logical analysis and algorithmic design for practical longwall mining, structure of hypothesis behavioral organism, input parameters, using practical knowledge and operational statistics of the mechanized longwall system experienced for many years.

In order for a taxpayer to produce income, he may be required to exhaust his capital assets. With respect to the mining industry, those exhaustible capital assets may result in income tax deductions under the general categories of depreciation, obsolescence, losses and depletion. The percentage depletion deduct ion concept is not based upon "economic" depletion, or "geological" depletion theories. Instead, it is wholly an income tax concept created by Congress. This is significant in that, in its application, tax depletion has no adherence to traditional economic or geological depletion concepts For example, the Internal Revenue Code limits percentage depletion to 50 percent of the miner's net income for the taxable period.1/ Should a particular miner extract and sell 500,000 tons of material during the year, but at a loss, he receives no percentage depletion. The same would apply to an electric utility which mined its own coal. Should its mining costs exceed the "going price" for coal, as established by actual arm's-length sales in the market, the utility has no net income, and is therefore not entitled to percentage depletion.2/

Canada produces close to 42 million tonnes of coal per annum of which some 38 million tonnes is produced by surface mining methods. The two Western Canadian provinces, Alberta and British Columbia, produce 31 million tonnes of coal by surface mining. These two provinces provide the bulk of the metallurgical coal for export. The geological conditions in the Western provinces particularly in the mountain region are complex. The coals are friable and the seams are steeply inclined, sheared, intensely folded and faulted. There may be as many as 15 to 20 coal seams present with true thickness ranging from 2.5 m to over 8 m. This paper reviews the surface mining methods used to extract such seams. The difficulties associated with steep seam and multiple seam mining of friable coal resulting in lower coal recovery, high dilution and the problem of cleaning fine coal in the wash plant have been highlighted.

"It has been the practice in Europe to extract the most economic seams first: taking the seams sequentially, top down, to avoid operating within the fractured strata formed by the subsidence trough above previously mined coal seams. In the 1990s, the UK coal industry found itself at a number of sites having to operate over one or more previously mined seams. This led to specific geotechnical challenges with respect to maintaining economic, safe and stable rectangular roadways with rock-bolted support.Within this paper, the current challenges and mitigation strategies of overmining in the UK are described following the completion of a -three-year European Commission-funded project in 2015. The challenges and mitigation strategies are related to:• A case study with overmining of older workings of variable geometry;• Numerical modeling for overmining layout and support design; and• A case study site planning mine layout when considering future overmining.INTRODUCTIONAt the first case study site, case histories were examined for a mine operating at a depth of approximately 700 meters where five longwall panels were extracted above workings 35-40 m below. The overmining of various extraction geometries below led to challenging conditions in areas of high vertical stress concentration. It was found that results from one longwall panel could be suitably used to predict behaviour in a subsequent panel. The experience was used to update previously existing guidelines on the positioning of roadways in relation to subsidence troughs. Existing guidelines recommended that only as a last resort should longwalls be planned to retreat over narrow pillars, or from solid ground into a subsidence trough. Existing guidelines regarding the layout of overmining panels are conservative, and new work indicates that such multi-seam geometries are possible with appropriate support management strategies."

Excellent underground industrial sites and warehouse facilities have been constructed in Europe and at several locations in the United States. Many quarry and mine operators are considering, or should consider, the possibilities of the development of their mineral properties in such a manner as to make underground space that is suitable for a secondary industrial use. Before proceeding with mine or quarry development, the operator should answer the following questions: 1) Is there a need for underground industrial space in your geographical area? 2) Is your deposit suitable for development of space for industrial usage? 3) If the deposit is suitable, what methods of development can be used? 4) What are the comparative economics of the different methods of space development? An honest analysis of the first two questions may eliminate the need for proceeding to the third. Affirmative answers to questions 1 and 2 should be followed by the engineering and economic studies required in response to questions 3 and 4.

Uranium mine workers? daily exposure to radon daughters was estimated by two methods of sampling, detailed and spot-check. Both methods involve time- weighting measured exposure levels to arrive at an average exposure figure. Random sampling, or sampling without regard for the duration of exposure, has proved inadequate for estimating average exposure levels. During the first phase of the study, the breathing zones of eight workmen in three underground uranium mines were sampled for an entire shift; 20 to 36 radon-daughter samples were collected per man-shift, Analysis of these data indicated that a suitably accurate estimate of the full-shift exposure could be made by time weighting a considerable lesser number of representative radon-daughter samples. This analysis led to the spot-check method of estimating full-shift exposures to radon daughters. Additional detailed studies were made in seven mines to Learn more about the full-shift radon-daughter exposures and to test the spot-check method, In all, 617 radon-daughter samples were taken in 10 underground uranium mines during 26 man-shifts, and the spot-check method was tested 35 times.

Centrifugal modeling was used to evaluate reclamation schemes of; (a) flocculants, (b) sand/clay mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (d) capping with sand or sand/clay mix. Results suggest the hierarchy of effectiveness is: (d) capping, (b) s/c mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (a) flocculants. Comparisions between currently used large strain consolidation computer programs reveal no difference between piecewise linear or finite strain calculations. Correlations between numerical and centrifugal model predictions reveal excellent agreement on magnitudes; however, rate predictions require improvement in laboratory input data and centrifugal scaling relationships.

It is now well documented that trace amounts of silver, gold, and platinum group metals occur in certain geothermal brine deposits. A significant body of literature has been generated over the last twenty years which describes attempts to quantify the frequency and levels of these precious metals in the brines. This literature is often confusing and contradictory. For example Barnea 1 states that the Salton Sea geothermal field carries 2 ppm gold, yet more recent data by workers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory2 (LLNL) concludes that the gold level in Salton Sea brine is <0.07 ppb. They report a platinum level in one well of 55 ppb. This apparent contradiction may be explained by sampling source and technique, but is most probably explained by difference in analytical technique. Analytical techniques and problems will be discussed in the next section.

Caesium, rubidium, and lithium are sometimes described as the minor or rarer alkali metals. They generally occur together in nature, although, lithium is distributed more widely and is far more abundant than either of the other two. The chemical, and even the physical, properties of these three elements can best be considered In conjunction with the more familiar members of the alkali group, sodium and potassium. The five elements lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and caesium show an interesting gradation properties from member to member with the increase in atomic weights. All are silvery white and soft enough to be cut with a knife. They tarnish rapidly in air and decompose water at ordinary temperatures. The lowest temperature at which the action of the several metals on water can be de¬tected is -98°C. for sodium, -105°C, for potassium, 108°C. for rubidium, and -116°C. for caesium. Most research dealing with the problem of laterally loaded piles has been the response of individual piles subjected to lateral loads and/or bending moments. However, piles are seldom used individually but are normally constructed in clusters or groups. Little information is available of the effect of pile-soil-pile interaction (PSPI) on the performance of the group. This may be attributed to the difficulty of carrying out full-scale tests. Such tests are prohibitively expensive and require special installations to provide the required large lateral loads. The problem of laterally loaded single piles or pile groups involves the complexity of extending the theoretical solutions to the limits where the actual soil behaves nonlinearly. As the load increases, the elastic soil behavior cannot be adopted for design. Nonlinear soil behavior or the elasto-plastic behavior is evident. This research consists of experimental and theoretical models. The experimental work was conducted on models of free head pile groups in different configurations. The piles were in a sand formation and compared to the behavior of a single pile. The possible factors that influence the group behavior could be visualized. The experimental data was also compared to the widely used theoretical approaches to determine their adequacy. The analytical model makes use of the finite difference approach to calculate the soil non-linearity. A new approach equates the measured ground deflection and maximum bending moments of each row at every load level with the analytical model of single pile. This is the Deflection-Moment Fitting (DMF). The most suitable non-linear soil modulus modes and row contributions could thus be determined. Design of pile groups can be based on data pertaining to soil characteristics of the single pile. Results of the analysis were consistent with other approaches and proved to be adequate for design.

Lignite and subbituminous coals are utilized essentially as mined without beneficiation. Most of the present production is used to generate electric power and the major problem in this use is ash deposition on fireside surfaces. The preparation at existing mines involves principally crushing and screening operations. Blending of production from different locations within the mine is practiced in several mines to control ash composition. Drying and oil treatment for freezeproofing, of lignite are used to a limited extent during winter. Future processing may involve both washing and drying operations to alter ash composition by ion exchange and upgrade the low-rank fuels to higher heating values. Research has been initiated to determine the feasibility of such processing.

The practice of transporting an ore or matrix from a pit area to the plant process area by means of a hydraulic pipeline has long been used by the mining industry. The industries which have classically used hydraulic transportation of ore to the plant include the phosphate mining industry, the heavy minerals mining industry, the clay mining industry, and the sand mining industry. As the advantages of this method become better known throughout the mining industry as a whole, and as techniques and expertise improve, its use will undoubtedly spread. Its use is presently being contemplated in iron mining diatomaceous earth mining, and several industries where massive removal of overburden is a predicate to economical mining. The widely recognized advantages of hydraulic transport at ion of ore from the pit area to the mines are: 1) Its relatively low initial capital costs. 2) Its speed of relocation at the mine site. 3) The washing and scrubbing action given to the ore by its hydraulic passage into the pit pump and the subsequent trip through booster pumps down the pipeline to the plant.

Mining of low grade deposits along with the necessity to design and operate flotation plants with high throughput presents unique metallurgical and environmental challenges that need to be addressed to reduce project risks, improve project economics and to sustain the profitability of operations over the life of a mine. Some of the key challenges include poor recovery of valuables and concentrate quality issues due to complex mineralogy, the need to use poor quality water such as brackish or sea water, reduce environmental impact from the process, integrate flotation with hydrometallurgy to maximize precious metals recovery, escalation of capital and operating costs, use of unproven technology and constant use of larger equipment, high ore variability, worldwide constraints on resource availability and an ever increasing need for reliable metallurgical input to financial models to evaluate economic viability of projects. The need to develop effective solutions to these problems in a short time frame is becoming a key to the success of any new project and for sustaining the profitability of a mining operation. An integrated multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving is crucial with the need for a more lateral thinking along with strategic partnerships and collaboration involving the right players. When performing blasting operations in open pit settings, energy is released and transmitted through the geology. Some negative effects can have significant impacts on mining operations and adversely affect mine production. This technical paper presents recommendations for blast design to prevent damage due to ground motion from blasting on adjacent concrete structures of underground operations. The paper includes a case study describing a problem regarding an open pit mine expansion and asks whether production blasting will damage concrete shaft structures due to blast stress waves and blastinduced ground motion. Based on the results, a set of criteria is provided to implement in current and future mining operations that involve blasting near underground concrete structures. A set of techniques on how to improve vibration levels for safe operations is also presented. Knowledge of particle velocity and wave propagation for site-specific circumstances to determine a safe level of vibration is recommended. Emphasis is placed on making use of electronic detonators and early delay detonators to achieve successful levels of vibration. A dynamic analysis is necessary to determine if vibration from blasting can damage the concrete shaft structure. When reinforced concrete structures are subject to blast loading, both concrete and steel are subject to very high strain rates. As opposed to static loads, when subject to high strain rate loads these materials increase their strength significantly. In fact, they increase by more than 50% for reinforcing steel, by more than 100% for concrete in compression, and by more than 600% for concrete in tension. This finding is of significant importance in mining operations because it allows an increase in flexural capacity of individual members as a result of high strain rates. Therefore, an elevated ground vibration (PPV) or particle velocity is permissible when blasting takes place near concrete structures.

Among underground coal miners, roof bolter operators are generally considered to have some of the highest risks for hazardous respirable dust exposure. This is because bolting requires drilling into roof strata that can often be a source of silica and silicate dust, which are associated with occupational lung diseases. However, little is known about the variability of dust characteristics (e.g., mineralogy constituents, particle size) in the vicinity of the bolter—or when specific dust controls are applied. As part of a prior NIOSH study, respirable dust samples were collected during several different events in standardized locations around an active roof bolter, and personal samples were also collected from the operator during the cleanout of the bolter’s dust collection system when it was equipped with a novel wet dust box versus a traditional dry box. Those samples were made available for follow-up analysis by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), as well as direct-on-filter Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Results showed variability in dust constituents and particle sizes at locations around the roof bolter, and indicated some event-to-event differences in dust sources. Additionally, compared to the dry dust box, the wet dust box appeared to reduce (by 41–82%) the relative silica and silicate content in the respirable dust to which the operator was exposed during cleanout. Furthermore, an inter-laboratory comparison demonstrated the reproducibility of a standardized direct-on-filter FTIR method for estimating quartz mass (i.e., the predominant form of crystalline silica) in respirable coal mine dust samples. However, for constituent analysis by SEM–EDX, differences observed between results from two independent labs indicate that standardization of the analytical protocol is necessary to enable comparability of results.
