Understanding the behaviour of rocks in a high horizontal stress field, such as that in Australia, is critical when analysing the stability of underground structures. This paper addresses the significance of the post-failure behaviour of rocks on the stability of underground structures which are under the influence of a high horizontal stress field. The research work was conducted through a combination of numerical modelling, laboratory testing and field investigation. A number of 2-D FE model of roadways were constructed based on the data obtained from laboratory testing and field investigations. The models were then analysed using three different solution techniques; simple linear-elastic, non-linear elastic-plastic and elastic-plastic with consideration of post-failure behaviour (softening model). Results indicated that the post-failure behaviour of rocks significantly influence the stress and displacement patterns around the roadway. The stress and displacement patterns as well as the extent of the yield zone around the roadway predicted by the softening model were in good agreement with that from the field study. Based on the results of the study, an appropriate support system has been suggested to govern the stability of roadways.

IN THE Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefore, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine, houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 lb. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of over 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 lb. per square foot of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to be given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam are appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent.

Field trials at three New South Wales and one Queensland coal mines were carried out to gather data on oxygen "run out" times of Self-Contained Self Rescuers (SCSRs), time taken to escape from the mine, distances travelled and the average heart rate of subjects wearing SCSRs. The study has led to a method of predicting the duration of oxygen supply from a SCSR as a function of the wearer's body weight, physical fitness and the prevailing environmental conditions. Escapeway design, planning for emergencies, familiarity with SCSRs and experiential escape training are critical to control panic and maximise the likelihood of survival of a person attempting to escape in an emergency involving fire or explosion.

Description of Quarry THE shale used at the Renton plant of the Denny-Renton Clay Coal Co., for the manufacture of vitrified paving brick occurs in a hill rising from 200 to 300 ft. above the level of the valley in which the plant is situated. The shale deposit, which is of unknown thickness pitches about 10° to the southeast. The 150-ft. face worked extends approximately east and west, so that the clip, as shown by the photograph, is to the left and into the hill. The shale is overlain with about 50 ft. of gravel, 70 ft. of clay, and 30 ft. of mixed loam and gravel, making altogether from 125 to 150 ft. of overburden. Disposal of Overburden The overburden is removed by sluicing. For this purpose a No. 2 Joshua Hendy giant is used, throwing a 12-in. stream', and having 60 lb. pressure at the nozzle. The water is drawn through an 8-in. pipe from Cedar river, about 1,000 ft. distant, by means of a Worthington four-stage centrifugal pump, direct connected with a 100-h.p. motor placed just south of the factory, and 1,500 ft. from the nozzle This plant handles the material satisfactorily to a height of about 75 ft. above the level of the top of the shale. When the higher levels are worked, an auxiliary plant consisting of a four-stage Byron Jackson centrifugal pump with a 100-h.p., belt-connected motor, is thrown into the system. This plant is situated on top of the shale and can be discerned at the extreme right of the trestle work in Fig. 1.

Coal is the geological product of entombed vegetal tissues. This view of its origin led Stopes and Wheeler to define it as "mummified plants." They evidently intended this term to be used in a broad way and to mean the preservation of the organic material, as such, regardless of the means employed to accomplish the purpose. The term " coal" should be regarded, therrfore, as broadly generic, and applicable to all accumulations of vegetal tissues as soon as they are covered and protected either by water or by earthy material. In this sense peat should be regarded as the first stage of coal formation and the term coal should include the resultant products of transformation in all other stages of the process until they have lost all resemblance to the original matter from which they were derived. If this idea of the development of coal is accepted and it is admitted, as the geologists claim, that the forces which produced this transformation of the coal have been active since vegetation began to grow upon the land, and are still in operation, it is obvious that somewhere in the world there are all gradations of this material from peat just forming in the swamps of today to graphitic anthracite which presumably marks the most advanced stage that can be recognized with certainty as belonging to the series. Some of these coals, particularly those occurring in the upper part of the series, are fairly well known because they are the ones that are most widely distributed and have been mined and utilized most extensively. On the other hand, the coals in the lower part of the series are but little known because they are not so abundant and, owing to their relative inefficiency, have been only slightly exploited and utilized, especially in regions where the better coals are abundant. The result of these conditions is that much research work has been done on coals of the higher ranks and a great body of facts regarding their physical and chemical properties and the uses to which they are best adapted has been accumulated, but little information is available regarding the coals of the lower ranks. An investigation was made of the lensile proper-ties of recrystallized high-purity tungsten and a W-1 pel ThO2 dispersed-phase alloy over the temperature region of 800° to 2400°C. The thoria addition resulted in a modest strengthening effect over the entire temperature region. A decrease in ductility of both materials occurred above 0.5 Tm which was caused by void formation. Current theories of IT has long been recognized that a second phase of hard particles has a strengthening effect on a pure metal. At low or intermediate temperatures (<0.5 Tm), the strengthening effect is thought to arise mainly from the interaction of dislocations with dispersed particles. Above 0.5 Tm, dynamic recovery processes greatly alter the deformation mechanisms from those simply involving glide, and grain bound- strengthening by a dispersed second phase do not adequately explain the tensile results. Melallographic examination suggests that the improved strength of tire alloy results from the effect of thoria on the mierostructure. Stress-dependent thermally activated processes were found to occur high temperatures. aries may act as sources of weakness rather than strength because of grain boundary sliding. Grain boundary sliding at high temperatures has been postulated to be the primary factor giving rise to the formation of voids or cavities at grain boundaries1-3 which in turn cause premature failure and poor ductility.4 Voids, once formed, can grow by the condensation of vacancies from the equilibrium concentration&apos; or from the excess vacancies produced by the deformation.4,5 The high-temperature tensile properties of unalloyed tungsten have previously been investigated by Sikora and Ha116 and also by Taylor and Boone.7 The purpose of the present work was to investigate

"The obscurity which still veils from us the true nature of veins will become more acid more cleared up when they can be considered in connection with the geological structure of the regions in which they occur." 1 THESE words, according to Lossen, the biographer of the late Dr. A. von Groddeck, of Clausthal, were the last received by him from that eminent man, perhaps the most far-sighted and carefully progressive of recent writers on ore-deposits. They seem to me to form a fitting text for what I am about to say ; since I find that many of the conclusions at which I have arrived by my own study of the structural relations of ore-deposits,or, in other words, of the structural and dynamic geology of the regions in which they occur in this country, have been similarly determined by hint within recent years in Europe, and especially in his home field of work, the Harz. I shall not enter upon a detailed account of how far other workers may have arrived at similar conclusions with myself, since these questions of priority are of little interest, except to those immediately concerned; but will briefly present the methods by which, in my work in this country, I have arrived at certain generalizations, and will point out the practical bearing which they may have upon the work of mining engineers. DURING the last several years many papers have appeared dealing with the structure of highly polished metal surfaces. The awakening of interest in this subject is due to the applicability of the electron diffrac-tion technique to the study of surfaces. The original theory of Beilby1 considered the surface of polished metals as of the nature of a super-cooled liquid or a vitreous, amorphous solid. The electron diffraction effects from polished metals have been interpreted by many to be a direct experimental proof of the correctness of the Beilby theory. This inter-pretation has been strongly opposed by others, so that at the present time the subject is in an uncertain and controversial state. In the present paper new, and hitherto unpublished, electron diffrac-tion effects from polished zinc are described. These observations indicate that the polished surface of zinc is crystalline.

"Milling circuits play an important role in achieving the desired product; tonnage, size distribution and properties, since they are directly linked to the comminution energy consumption for the whole process. A grinding model with a mathematical simulation was developed for an open milling circuit with a scalped feed from a hydro-cyclone. The circuit was optimized by determining the optimal conditions in terms of energy consumption which would produce a floatable product having a desired size range (i.e. -75 +9 µm) for a platinum-bearing ore. The simulation results showed an operating region comprising the best combination of the ball filling and mill speed to achieve the highest production of a floatable size class, with the minimum energy consumption.INTRODUCTIONBall milling is usually conducted in closed circuits in order to achieve a desired product size without material overgrinding. The technological importance of optimising milling circuits cannot be overemphasised (Toneva and Peukert, 2007). Previous work has brought significant insights into the benefits of modelling milling circuits (Austin et al., 1984; King, 2012; Toneva and Peukert, 2007). However, the ability to model these circuits is dependent on the performance of the classifiers and the fidelity of the grinding mill model used compared to the actual circuit (Toneva and Peukert, 2007). Austin et al. (1984) identified five types of milling circuits as shown in Figure 1 namely; the grinding circuits employing mill in an open circuit, normal closed circuit, reverse closed circuit, open circuit with scalped feed, and, the combined closed circuit. Depending on the presence of the first classifier, the second, or both as well as their corresponding loops (streams), the combined circuit (e) can reduce to; an open (d), a normal closed (b), an open circuit with scalped feed (c) or a reverse closed circuit (a). In the case of an open circuit, the mill is operated without being directly influenced by a classifier. The normal closed circuit does not have the first classifier and therefore the make-up feed is the actual feed stream. Conversely, the reverse closed circuit keeps only the first classifier. The open circuited with scalped feed has only the first classifier but does not have the second one. The overflow stream from the classifier is mixed with the mill product to form the final product for the downstream process."

THERE is today no proven continuous mining machine that can be used under all the varying conditions found in most bituminous coal mines. During the last five years, however, both the machines and methods of using them have been improved. Coal operators can now exercise a fair degree of selectivity, except those who must struggle with thick and hard partings and operate in seams less than 40 in. thick. It must be realized, then, that more than one type of continuous miner may be used advantageously in the same coal mine. Although this appears to violate the standardization generally sought after, the gain can more than offset added maintenance and, to a lesser degree, operating problems.

Coal mining operations in the Upper Olifants River Catchment in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa are challenged with the increasing production of excess mine water that cannot be fully managed by existing practices of pollution control at source, recycling, and reuse on mining sites, storage and limited release to the natural water course. In contrast to this, the Olifants River Catchment is experiencing water stress and insufficient water is available to satisfy all water quantity and quality requirements for future industrial and municipal growth. It is estimated that the catchment has a deficit of 192 million m3 per annum if the reserve water requirements are taken into account. The future increased water requirements can be met by water transferred to the Olifants River Catchment from adjacent catchments. The cost of transferred water is likely to be substantially higher than the current cost of water supplied to local municipalities, commerce and industry. BHP Billiton and Anglo Coal Corporation are working together to jointly implement water management strategies that will contribute to the achievement of in-stream and dam water quality and aquatic objectives for the catchment. Consideration is now being given to the treatment and beneficial use of excess mine water. This will inaugurate a new era for the coal mining industry in South Africa, in which a pollution threat to the water resources in the Upper Olifants River Catchment is converted into a water source for beneficial use. Three potential mine water reclamation and reuse schemes have been identified and this paper details the technical, institutional, legal and financial considerations in the implementation of these schemes.

AN attempt has been made to compare the influences of the two most widely used depressants-alkalis and sodium cyanide-and the most widely used activator-copper sulfate-on the air-mineral contact induced by five sulfur-bearing compounds: (1) sodium di-ethyl dithio-phosphate (sodium Aerofloat); (2) potassium ethyl xanthate; (3) sodium di-ethyl dithiocarbamate; (4) potassium iso-amyl xanthate; (5) potassium di-n-amyl dithiocarbamate. Three different organic types are included in this group and for two of these types a higher and a lower homologue have been tested. The study of potassium ethyl xanthate, the preliminary results of which have been described,1 was continued until there had been obtained a comprehensive account of the influence of variations in pH value and in the concentrations of xanthate, sodium cyanide and copper sulfate on the adsorption of this xanthate by galena, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. With concentrations of copper sulfate and collector that the work with ethyl xanthate indicated would give the most illuminating results, the other four collectors were tested in a less exhaustive way. The same general principles determine the influence of alkalis, cyanide and copper sulfate, no matter to which type the collector belongs, but there is a gradation in the quantitative measure of such influence. In the list above, the five collectors are cited in the order of their capacity to withstand the depressants, sodium Aerofloat being the least resistant, potassium di-n-amyl dithiocarbamate the most resistant. This order coincides substantially with that of the solubilities of the heavy metal salts formed by double decomposition with the collectors, those formed from sodium Aerofloat being most soluble. There is little difference between the third and fourth members of the series, and under certain conditions their positions are reversed.

This paper is concerned with two case histories of wastewater quality management in underground coal mines in the Illawarra region. The first investigation briefly presents an analysis of mine water discharge having an extremely high concentration of suspended solids and consistently high barium concentrations, averaging, 14.4 mg/I Barium, over the sampling period. A laboratory study of chemical precipitation processes has indicated that about 91% of barium could be removed by using ferric sulphate and lime. On the basis of the information obtained from the environmental audit process an alternative water treatment and reuse system incorporating 51% reduction in the water consumption with 32% less off-site discharge has been suggested (Thomas, 1995).The second case history is concerned with the storm water management at a mine situated in the Illawarra escarpment where only 20% of the wastewater generated in the colliery is discharged off-site. Computer modelling of the storm water system showed that 75% of the clean runoff becomes contaminated through poor management practices and causes the process wastewater treatment system to fail in wet weather. Suggested improvements include relatively simple alteration to the coal wash filtration dams which are expected to reduce the periods of inefficient operation of these dams by 95%. The use of storm water diversion channels and detention basins can reduce the overflow volumes by 70 - 100 % for a ten year ARI (Average Recurrence Interval) storm event (Wingrove 1996).

A stope and pillar method is used to mine the gently-dipping uranium bearing reefs, to a depth of 1000 m, at Elliot Lake, Ontario. A few isolated rockbursts have been reported in the 11 mines in the area during the first twenty-five years of operation. However, in March 1982 a series of rockbursts were initiated in the old mined-out workings at the Quirke Mine of Rio Algom Ltd. Detailed records of pillar deterioration and size of the affected area were kept both prior and subsequent to the occurrence. Seismic instrumentation was installed before and convergence stations shortly after the start of bursting. Observations indicate that the squat pillars failed violently where- as the slender pillars exhibit a less violent failure mechanism. Floor cracks and heaving are common, but the massive quartzite hanging wall strata is relatively undamaged although some roof falls have occurred due to local structure. The microseismic system accurately locates seismic events to f 20 m within the geophone array and it has been found that an accelerating convergence rate coincides with and in some cases precedes an increase in seismic activity. Displacement discontinuity and boundary element computer models have been used to estimate pillar stresses and areas of high stress concentration in an effort to determine the causes of rockbursts. Mine and pillar stiffness and energy balance concepts are used to explain cases of gradual and sudden pillar failures at Quirke Mine.

The Bureau of Mines has developed and successfully tested a hangup clearance module for use in clearing hangups in underground mine chutes and ore passes. The Bureau&apos;s tests showed that the hangup clearance module can be effectively used to clear mine hangups. Furthermore, it is believed that clearance using this module is quicker, safer, and more efficient than the method currently used. The hangup clearance module uses a ballistic disk explosive charge that can clear hangups located as far as 50 feet (15.2 m) from the position where the charge is detonated. Mine personnel can therefore set up the module and the charge it contains without being exposed to dangerous areas. This report describes the principles of operation of the module, provides data and drawings for its construction, and gives instructions for its setup and use. The report also summarizes the development of the module, briefly discusses preliminary and underground tests, and lists the current and potential applications of the hangup clearance module to underground mining.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel Co.&apos;s Sunnyside No.1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pet.

THE State of Nevada, known par excellence as "the Silver State," occupies the major portion of the wide plateau, or so-called Great Basin, lying between the Sierra Nevada range on the west and the Wahsatch range of the Rocky Mountains on the east. It extends from the 114th degree to the 120th degree of longitude, west of Greenwich. It is limited, on the north, by the 42d degree of latitude, and on the extreme south by the 35th degree of latitude. Its general shape is that of an irregular parallelogram, from which the lower or southwestern portion has been cut off by a diagonal southeasterly line; the missing portion forms a part of the State of California on the west. The Great Basin is made up of a succession of low hills, or minor mountain ranges, running very nearly north and south, with long valleys between them. All of these mountains are more or less metalliferous. On the western rim, marking the eastern flank or foothills of the Sierra, we find granites, porphyries, and propylites. Here we note the great Comstock lode, with its free-milling gold and silver ores, and still further south the once prominent and the now reviving gold and silver-bearing districts of Esmeralda County, Nevada, and of Morro County, California. Next, at some distance to the east, we find the mining districts at and near Unionville, in Humboldt County. Still further to the east we find the Battle Mountain copper-silver district, north from the railroad, and southerly therefrom the Austin or Reese River, Belmont, and other districts. The chloridizing mill of the Standard Reduction Co. is located about 75 miles south of Salt Lake City on the Tintic branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western R. R. and 12 miles from the Tintic Standard mine. The daily capacity is 200 toss of a siliceous, low-grade, silver-lead ore from this property. It has operated continuously since it was started in January, 1921. The process consists essentially of a chloridizing roast followed by a percolating leach with a nearly saturated solution of common salt, acidified with sulfuric acid, the precipitation of silver on sponge copper and of copper and lead on tin-plate cuttings. The precipitates are shipped to a smelter. Some of the general ideas involved are said to have been used by Augustin in England, in 1840. A number of textbooks treat of the subject, especially the chloridizing roast followed by a leach with sodium hyposulfite or amalgamation. The process was revived in this district by Theo. P. Holt, N. C. Christensen, the Bureau of Mines, and others. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) INTRODUCTION IT is rather gratifying that in the field of the manufacture &apos;of refractories, in which, as a whole, foreign practice has surpassed us, the United States stands pre-eminent in the making of silica brick. In some instances European manufacturers have refused point-blank to credit the possibility of making to such specifications as are common with us, until the actual &apos;completed shapes were shipped for inspection. But both the manufacturer and consumer in foreign lands are now frankly learning from us, and benefiting by our advanced practice in this field, as is evidenced by the orders placed here and the efforts put forth abroad to come up to the standard of American-made material. In no metallurgical operation has the employment of silica brick spread with. such leaps and bounds as in the building of plants for the carbonization of coal, particularly in the byproduct coke oven. Today, in practically all types of oven, the structure above the floor level (except the facings) is of silica, while in the recuperative and in some regenerative types, its use is extended to that portion of the oven below the floor as well. By reason of the fact that there are a number of classes of refractories of higher silica content than the usual so-called fire-clay brick, there is sometimes a misunderstanding as to the class of material referred to as "silica" brick. We here refer only to a brick having a silica content of 94 per cent. or more and made usually from quartzite rock with a small percentage of lime as a binder. The term "silica" brick is sometimes rather loosely applied to brick front highly siliceous clays, or to a quartzite refractory of mingled fire-clay and quartz rock; but such products are not considered in this discussion.

"The Department of Finance introduced draft amendments to the resource allowance regulations on July 23, 1992 that effectively nullify the decision in the Gulf Canada Limited case. Prior to the amendments it appeared that only ""directly"" related general and administrative, capital cost allowance and scientific research expenditures had to be deducted from resource profits. Now ancillary expenditures are required to be deducted. Consequently, the ability of taxpayers to claim the resource allowance is curtailed.IntroductionOn October 25, 1990 it was almost certain that taxable mines were going to get a break. The Federal Court-Trial Division had just decided in Gulf Canada Limited&apos;s favour to allow it to claim resource related tax benefits larger than what Revenue Canada evidently wished. Revenue Canada appealed first to the Federal Court of Appeal and then to the Supreme Court of Canada. On January 10, 1992 the Federal Court of Appeal agreed with the Federal Court decision and on July 2, 1992the Supreme Court declined to hear any further appeal. A mere three weeks later, on July 23, 1992, the Department of Finance issued draft ""clarifying"" measures to amend the calculation of the resource allowance. These measures effectively nullify the benefits that arose under the decisions of the Federal Court."
