The Grand Isle sulfur mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, La. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Co. by the State of Louisiana which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the U.S. Department of the Interior after passage of the Outer continental Shelf Lands Act. The sulfur deposit was discovered in 1949 when Humble Oil & Refining Co. penetrated more than 200 ft of sulfur-bearing limestone in a zone between 1813 and 2075 ft below sea level. In 1954, Humble drilled ten more sulfur prospect holes, eight of which encountered sulfur ore.

The Cayuga Mine, a deep rock salt mining, operation, changed from a standard room and pillar mine design to a yielding pillar/pressure arch design five years ago. In general the roof conditions improved. However, entries adjacent to the abutment pillars continued to fail. It was noticed that where abutment pillars were accidentally "notched" (by driving cross- cuts one cut into the pillars), the abutment entries had better roof conditions than where there were no "notches". Experiments with intentionally notched abutment pillars showed that notching did improve abutment entry conditions. During the past four years notch configuration has been varied to suit local ground conditions. Recently, "pre-cutting" of notches has proven itself as a means of protecting abutment entries under severe ground conditions. As an added bonus, the notches improve productivity by providing more places to work and reduce costs because it is not necessary to bolt the notches.

THE Elko Prince mine is in the Gold Circle district, Nevada, about ½ miles(2. 4km.) from the town of Midas, 55 miles (88.5 km.) west of Battle Mountain and 50 miles (8.5 km.) northeast of Golconda. The district is described by Emmons in U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 408, 1910. Little was said of the Elko Prince, however, as only a small amount of work had then been completed. The geological structure of the region is simple. The oldest exposed formation, covering most of the area, is rhyolite, which has a light-colored devitrified groundmass enclosing phenocrysts of feldspar, quartz, and magnetite. It has been somewhat weathered and partially stained with oxide of iron. There are several outcrops of andesite which cut the rhyolite. The ore deposits occur as fissure veins, replacement veins, and sheeted zones. The Elko Prince vein is of the first type. The rhyolite near the veins is silicified, stained with oxide of iron, and, at some localities, replaced by ore, or is so permeated by metals as to be classed as ore. The vein filling consists chiefly of quartz, and the values consist entirely of gold and silver. Part of the gold exists as the native metal and part is associated with pyrite. Silver occurs free and its argentite in handed streaks through the vein. These veins trend in a northwesterly direction, with dips varying from 65° to vertical.

Although copper production established a new record, lead and zinc registered gains, and iron production held steady, the mixed trend in metallic and nonmetallic mining and generally lower prices in 1961 resulted in a net decline in the total value of domestic mineral production. According to preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the value of metals produced in this country during the year was approximately $1.9 billion, a decrease of $117 million from 1960; the value of nonmetallics was about $3.7 billion, a $14 million decrease. The following report of mining and mineral developments during 1961 is based on USBM and industry sources. Aluminum Output Dips from 1960 Record Government reports indicate that the domestic primary aluminum industry produced approximately 1,880,000 tons, equivalent to 77% of this nation's capacity. This production is about 6% below the 1960 record output of 2,014,498 tons. Shipments of primary metal ingot slightly exceeded the quantity produced.

The experiments described herein were made at the request of Committee D-5, on Coal and Coke, American is n Society for Testing Materials, in order to obtain data as to the probable contamination of laboratory samples of coke Then pulverized to pass a No. 63 sieve of tine U. S. Standard Sieve Series2 by methods other than by ball-mills or hard-steel diamond mortars, which methods are specified-in the standard methods of that Society.3 After pulverizing, representative samples were analyzed by the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh for ash content to detect any contamination of the samples by the pulverizing apparatus. Preparation of Core Samples for Tests. Two samples of 48-hour beehive coke (Continental and Leisenring) made from Pittsburgh coal were selected for the tests. These cokes were crushed approximately to No. 10 sieve size, by first passing through a jaw crusher and then through a, roll crusher. The crushed coke was then carefully mixed and riffled into portions of about 800 grams each, and sent to three cooperating laboratories for grinding, through a No. 60 sieve. INTRODUCTION RITTINGER'S law of the energy expended in crushing is, as roughly stated by Professor Richards,1 that the work of crushing is proportional to the reduction in diameter; or, as I have more fully expressed it: "The work done in crushing is proportional to the surface exposed by the operation; or, better expressed for this purpose, the work done on a given mass of rock is proportional to the reciprocal of the diameter of the final product-assuming that all the mass has been reduced to one exact size, which is only theoretically possible.?2 Kick's law is stated by H. Stadler as follows:3 "The energy required for producing analogous changes of configuration of geometrically similar bodies of equal -technological state varies as the volumes or weights, of these bodies." In other words, the energy expended is porportional to the volume reduction, instead of the diameter reduction. That these two laws would give widely different results may be shown by a simple imaginary case. A ton of 16-in. cubes is broken to 1 -in. cubes at the first operation, and these are broken to 1/16 -in, cubes at a second operation. Since the first operation produces only one-sixteenth as much new surface as the second, the ratio of energy expended in the two operations would be by Rittinger's law as 1 to 16. By Kick's law, since the volume-reduction ratio is the same in both cases, the ratio of energy would be 1 to 1. Because men, materials, and supplies are being moved more often and farther by rail, the ef¬ficient and safe construction of the system takes on new importance. Most large coal mines are opting to use track haulage over other support transportation systems because of cost, ease of installation, reliability, and other factors. En¬gineers tackling the problem of designing such a transportation network must be aware of all the steps required for an effective transportation system design. This chapter discusses all aspects of efficient trackwork construction. The areas covered in¬clude design factors, laying the track, installing turnouts and switches, and installing trolley wire. Each area includes a description of the steps needed to complete the work.

It is scarcely necessary to point out the important functions of water in the mining operations of man, especially in the State of California, where sluicing and hydraulic mining have been practiced on such a grand scale as to arouse the opposition of the agricultural interests. But the role which water and ice have played in mining or excavating on their own account is not so apparent. The alluvions of existing rivers, and the higher gravel-beds left by ancient streams, are doubtless the result of running water; but how far these gravelly materials owe their origin primarily as rocky debris and fragments of veins to glacial erosion, it is difficult .to determine. Yet we see on every side in our higher mountains unmistakable evidences of the cutting, crushing and eroding effects of glacial ice. We note that mountain-summits have been reduced in height and shaped into rounded and dome-like summits. We know that the general contour of the hills of New England, of the Highlands of the Hudson, and of the mountains of northern New Jersey, is due to glacial carving. The same is true of the Laurentian hills of Canada and of the mountains of all northern regions. And we recognize in the vast deposits of so-called " drift," which are spread out over the surface of the northern States, the chips and debris from the glacial workshops. Thus we cannot avoid the conclusion that there was an enormous amount of cutting and excavating in glacial times, and that vast quantities of veinmaterial and of ores and metals must have been liberated by ice-action.

During the past three years the Surface Preparation Committee of the American Mining Congress Coal Operators' Committees has been collecting data on dewatering and drying washed coal, and on screening coal in representative plants in the Eastern and Central bituminous fields. Because of wide variations in bed moisture, such data can be compared only after deducting the bed moisture. It was found that practically every company used a different routine for moisture sampling and determinations. Some reported the moistures as total moistures, others as surface moistures, air-dried moistures, or oven-dried moistures. For most of the reports it was necessary to estimate, from a consideration of the bed moisture and other data available in a given case, corrections to be made in order to obtain surface-moisture figures as a common basis for comparison. At any plant, and regardless of bed moisture, the percentage of surface moisture remaining in a product when the dewatering, or a given stage of the dewatering, has been completed, is the real measure of what has been accomplished. The descriptions and data given with Fig. 1 show that surface-moisture figures show relationships that would not be shown by total moistures. Therefore bed moisture should be deducted, or, if more practicable, the surface moisture of the products should be measured direct. A preparation engineer finds one per cent, or even a part of one per cent, of surface moisture a very important consideration in the results of his efforts to find the most effective and economical methods of reducing and controlling the surface moisture in his products within the required limits. Therefore it is important for him to have accurate measurements of surface moisture with minimum uncertainty as to whether they sometimes include less than the surface moisture and at others all of the surface moisture plus an unknown part of the bed moisture. The plastic flow of .molybdenum was studied in compression at temperatures below the ductile-to-brittle transition in tension. It was found that molybdenum is ductile in compression at all temperatures down to —196°C. The yield strength continues to increase with decreased test temperature below the tensile ductile-to-brittle transition temperature range. Difficulty was encountered in correlating the experimental data obtained with existing theories of plastic flow. THE body-centered-cubic metals as a group show a rapid and very large increase in yield strength with decreasing test temperature.' It is of fundamental importance to the understanding of the mechanism of plastic flow that this general characteristic be examined carefully. Unfortunately, brittle fracture in low-temperature tensile tests prohibits the measurement of flow properties at very low temperatures. By using compression tests, fracture can be suppressed and the plastic flow of the bcc metals can be studied far below their tensile ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures. Molybdenum was chosen for this experiment and plastic-flow data were obtained down to —196°C.

In 1939 Dr. Ralph Peck criticized the Civil Engineering community for taking a bifurcated approach to the prediction of building damage due to subsurface geo-technical works. Specifically, he observed that Geotechnical Engineers concerned themselves only with subsurface issues implying that their results were largely independent of the presence and condition of the structures above. He continued that Structural Engineers charged with risk assessment of buildings approached their work nearly in isolation of below ground activities. Seventy years later, although the state-of-the-art has enabled a better understanding of soil-structure interaction, the reality remains that risk assessment from subsurface construction, is not yet an integrated activity when done on a large-scale basis. To help move beyond this, this paper proposes a new, integrated methodology for preliminary assessment that considers a three-stage process that involves the following: (1) traditional empirical relationships for predicting ground movement from tunneling, (2) recent advances in condition assessments, and (3) architectural designators related to usage and historic preservation listings. The methodology is applied to a study area of nearly 260 buildings in the city center of Dublin Ireland, in an area slated for an upcoming metro. The results are com-pared to the Environmental Impact Statement issued for the official project. Al-though the test case is for tunneling, the approach may be adapted to other subsurface construction activities including excavation and piling.

Underground coal mines often experience ground control problems related to weak floor. Developing a methodology for rating floor quality can aid in understanding and delineating ground hazards. U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers are currently exploring methods for generating ground control hazard potential maps. One component of hazard potential in floor-heave-prone mines is delineating floor quality and its correlation with failure. Although field exposures are limited, significant information on the roof and floor quality can be gained through analysis of existing drill core data. Drill core data and roof and floor exposures were analyzed for quality. Laboratory tests were run on 50 core samples to evaluate, compressive and tensile strengths of various roof and floor lithologies. Extensive geologic and lithologic examinations of the cores and samples were also completed. Results of this work involve the formation of a preliminary quality rating for coal mine floor using a modified Coal Mime Roof Rating (CMRR).

Aluminum alloys containing relatively small amounts of magnesium and silicon are of commercial interest because they are readily workable in the annealed form and may be hardened and strengthened by suitable heat treatment. An intermediate temper can be produced in these alloys by quenching after a Solution heat treatment and the alloy in this condition can be formed easily. Artificial aging is required to obtain the maximum mechanical properties but this aging does not cause distortion nor require elaborate heat-treating equipment. The hardening of the alloys after quenching is attributable in part to the retention of the compound Mg²Si in solid solution, while the maximum hardness obtained by subsequent artificial aging is attributed to the fact that the solid solubility of the compound Mg²Si in aluminum decreases with decreasing temperature. Considering the importance of aluminum alloys susceptible to heat treatment, it is surprising how few fundamental investigations have been carried out on the aluminum-magnesium silicide alloys. This paper deals principally with the solid solubility relations of the compound Mg2Si in aluminum and is the sixth paper of a series1 from the laboratories of the Aluminum Co. of America reporting the results of investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys made from high-purity aluminum."

In German underground coal mining mostly arch and some rectangular roadways are used in the development work. Due to its positive results from numerical and physical modeling techniques as well as good underground experiences, the numbers of rectangular roadways has increased significantly. Today the bolt support - independent of its cross-sectional shape - represents an undeniable support element. During the introduction of new bolt techniques a detailed investigation of the rock and support mechanical effectiveness of bolt support in roadways at all operation stages is of basic importance. This effectiveness can be predicted and verified using different simulation techniques. For the planning of rockbolted roadways two supplementary simulation techniques are presented in this paper. By combination of all available planning tools the best result for planning assurance can be achieved. The Bureau of Mines developed a concentration method to upgrade and utilize marginal natural or direct-shipping iron ores and fine-grained lean iron ores. Presently these ores receive little beneficiation and accordingly have low iron-silica (Fe-Si02) ratios. Ore samples were roasted with equal weights of solid reductant at 1,100° C for 1 hour to metallize the iron and for an additional hour at 1,200° C to promote grain growth. Concentration was effected by crushing and screening techniques and/or wet magnetic separation. Sized concentrates (minus 4 plus 35 mesh) derived from crushing-screening processes contained from 80 to 85 percent iron that was 90 percent metallized. Iron-silica ratios as high as 12:1 and iron recoveries from 75 to 94 percent were obtained. The sized concentrates were judged suitable for use as blast furnace feed. Minus 200-mesh metallized concentrates derived from roasted minus I-inch plus 8-mesh ore fractions and magnetically concentrated contained 90 percent Fe and 4 percent or less Si02, chemically qualifying them as feed for electric furnaces. Roasting minus 8-mesh ore with hydrogen, then magnetically concentrating it, produced iron concentrates containing 57 percent to 67 percent Fe and 3.6 percent to 8.4 percent Si02. The concentrates having Fe-Si02 ratios ranging from 8:1 to 12:1 were considered adequate for use as blast furnace feed. Overall iron recoveries for the 12 ores tested ranged from 56 percent to 94 percent with an average iron recovery of 86 percent.

Although many metallurgists know that some pearlitic special steels can be made troostitic, martensitic, and even austenitic, without quenching, and, therefore, without exposing them to the dangers of the quenching-bath, the practical significance of such possibility does not seem to have received the attention it deserves. Let us recall briefly the mechanism of the transformation alluded to. In Fig. 1 (after Guillet) is shown the constitutional diagram of nickel-steel; that is, of alloys of iron, carbon, and nickel. Any steel the composition of which falls within the area LPO is pearlitic after slow cooling; any steel the composition of which is represented by a point within the area MLO is martensitic, and any steel within the area MNO is austenitic. Starting with pearlitic steel, then by increasing the carbon-content or the nickel-content, or both, the metal becomes marten-sitic and eventually austenitic; that is, its composition crosses first the boundary-line LO and then the line MO—and it remains martensitic or austenitic after slow (air) cooling.' We have in this way imparted to the metal without quenching it the properties of hardened carbon-steel. In other words, the steel is now self-hardening; Nickel cannot be introduced into solid steel, but by the well-known process of case-hardening it

BETTER ROOF SUPPORT During the last decade, resin-grouted roof bolts have taken a substantial foothold in the coal mining industry - now accounting for about one-third of all bolts installed annually, due to the improved roof support. However, the high cost, toxicity and flammability of the resin cartridges appear to be a limiting factor in even greater use of such bolts. Terra Tek, Inc. has, over the past few years, been developing a novel roof bolting system to mix/inject a very fast-setting and high strength inorganic cement into bolt holes and install point-anchored or full-column grouted rebars - all automatically and at substantial cost savings. This grouting system utilizes a unique method to mix the grout ?in-the-hole?. It has been integrated with a conventional bolter, retrofitted with an indexing-head mechanism and an on-board pneumatic computer to sequence and Control the drilling, grouting and bolting. Cycle times are the same or better than for a resin system. Following laboratory testing/development, the prototype system has undergone field trials in a Utah coal mine. A description of the bolting system, results of pull-tests in the laboratory and field, and economics and productivity gains with this system in comparison to a conventional resin-cartridge bolting method are presented. The relationship of this technique to improved roof control is also discussed.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.
