From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gipps- land mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695kg of gold, which at 1982 prices represents a value of about $140 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subse- quent occupants of the lease produced an addit- ional 160kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. When the mines closed, Walhalla gradually reduced from a bustling developed town to the present attractive mountain village so favoured by tourists.

GEOCHEMICAL investigation of trace elements in surface materials was begun near Ely, Minn., in 1953 along the basal contact of Duluth gabbro with Giants Range granite (Fig. 1). This article presents data on the distribution of copper and nickel in till and in stream sediments in the area and proposes an explanation for the types of distribution found. The Duluth gabbro, one of the world's largest basic intrusives, intrudes rocks which range in age from Keewatin to middle Keweenawan. Within the test area the gabbro is in contact with granite except for short sections where it is in contact with remnants of iron formation. Sulfide mineralization occurs within the gabbro, near and parallel to the basal contact for a distance of several miles. Schwartz and Davidson' have described the geologic setting of the mineralization. The sulfides, believed to be syngenetic, include chalcopyrite, cubanite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and minor amounts of bornite. They occur disseminated in the silicates and as small interstitial masses. The ratio of copper to nickel is about 3.8:1, based on 66 chemical analyses of rock samples from various outcrops (Ref. 1, p. 702, and Ref. 2). Test Procedures: With specified exceptions, all nickel and copper tests were made by the chromo-graph method,:' which measures the intensity of a colored spot formed by a reaction between the metal being determined and special reagent paper. The intensity is then compared to the intensity of spots prepared from samples of known metal content. Details of the test procedure are outlined in another article (Ref. 4, pp. 77,78). All soil samples tested in this investigation to date have been weighed on an analytical balance. However, a volumetric scoop designed to provide about 0.1 g of soil adds to the speed and ease of testing and has been found to give satisfactory results (Ref. 5, p. 531, and Ref. 19). The size of the samples used for the tests was 0.1 g. Whenever such small samples are used there is some question as to whether they are representative of the several grams in the field sample. Many repeat tests of the samples used in this investigation demonstrated that results can be reproduced within the limits of accuracy of the method without formal mixing beyond that inherent in screening the soil fractions. Furthermore, the 0.1 g is probably as representative of the field sample as the field sample is of its area of influence. Hawkes and Lakin (Ref. 6, p. 291), who considered the general problem, compared ground and quartered bulk samples of 500 g with 5-g grab samples. They concluded that "there is no significant loss in accuracy of data by substituting grab samples for bulk samples." The term soil implies somewhat different things to the geologist, engineer, and soil scientist.' For convenience the term as used in this article refers to unconsolidated material (the mantle) overlying bed rock. Sampling Procedure: Samples were taken at 100-ft intervals along north-south traverse lines across the gabbro-granite contact. The soil (till) samples were taken at an average depth of 1 ft, which was below the high-humus surface layer and into clean till. Samples taken at 1-ft intervals down to ledge showed as high a metal content at 1 ft below the air-surface as at greater depths and in two instances were slightly higher. The till at 1-ft depth did not appear to differ from material at greater depths. Total depth to bedrock has been tested at only a few points and where measured varied from 1 to 10 ft. Aerial Distribution Contours and Profiles: Plotting of copper, nickel, and cobalt content in contour form (Fig. 2) shows that anomalous amounts of these metal ions occur in till over and closely adjacent to mineralized areas of the gabbro. Contouring nickel content alone, or the copper content, outlines the same target area. Contours of the copper content provide a more distinct anomaly than nickel because of the higher copper concentration. The traverses are rather widely spread for interpolation; however, drilling has confirmed the target area essentially as shown.

Trace fossils have been found in Bolivian Silurian sediments in "La Iumhre" area close to La Paz-Bolivia.Tracks, are good indicators of depth and environment. A detailed study of the ichnogenus is made.The depth and environmental deposits are analyzed to determine the facies. It was shown that the trace fossils of Silurian sediments in La Paz belong to the Zoophvcos and Nereites facies.

ADMIRALTY nickel is a new corrosion-resisting and heat-resisting white metal alloy composed of 70 per cent. copper, 29 per cent. nickel and 1 per cent. tin. It has been given the trade name "Adnic." In 1924, Wm. B. Price1 described this alloy and its successful use as a diaphragm metal. The physical properties of Adnic at ordinary and elevated temperatures were given in Mining & Metallury.2 A patent3 was granted on Adnic, April 28, 1925. Work was first started on this alloy during December, 1921. An investigation of the patent situation in this country and abroad, and also a search of the literature, did not reveal any work on the ternary diagram, copper-nickel-tin; and the only wrought copper-nickel-tin alloy found was that known as "Newloy," composed of copper, 64 per cent.; nickel, 35 per cent.; tin, 1 per cent. This was being manufactured and sold by Wm. Gallimore & Sons, Ltd., Sheffield, England, for unplated spoon and fork stock, and first came to our attention in January, 1922. The preliminary work in connection with the development of Adnic was started by casting four binary copper-nickel alloys of the compositions shown in Table 1. Various amounts of tin were added to each of these mixtures, to produce the series of ternary copper-nickel-tin alloys also given in Table 1. A 200-gm. sample of each of these was cast by melting in a clay graphite crucible and allowing the melt to slowly cool with the furnace. A longitudinal section from each of these castings was polished and etched for examination. BINGHAM has produced 6 per cent. of this country's copper. In total production, it ranks fourth among the copper camps of North America, the order being Butte, Michigan, Bisbee, and Bingham. In its annual production, it held that same rank until 1919, when its production was exceeded by the combined production of the Globe-Miami district of Arizona. Bingham has also been a lead camp of the first order. Utah ranks third among the lead-producing states, and its production comes largely from three camps which, in the order of their productivity, are: Bingham, Tintic, Park City. Bingham's silver production is important, but it does not rank high as a silver producer. Utah owes its rank as first among the silver-producing states to Tintic, a camp 40 miles due south of Bingham. The United States Mineral Resources reports a total production from Bingham for the period 1865-1920 having a gross value of $528,043,432. Bingham is on the eastern flank of the Oquirrh range 30 miles south-west of Salt Lake City, from which it can be reached in an hour by auto, or by the Denver & Rio Grande or the Bingham & Garfield railroads.. The automobile route is a paved road across the floor of Great Salt Lake Valley, through farming country. The Bingham & Garfield railway leaves the level of Great Salt Lake at the northern end of the Oquirrh range, and in 20 miles it climbs 2100 ft., and deposits the traveler upon a shelf cut in the side of Bingham Canyon below most of the mines, which are farther up Bingham Canyon and its tributary Carr Fork. Below lies the town, a narrow ribbon running for a couple of miles along the bottom of a canyon 2000 ft. deep-an almost impossible site for a community numbering, in prosperous times, 5000 to 7000 inhabitants drawn from all quarters of the globe. Up the canyon and down, and beneath the steep slopes nearby, and beneath the town itself, are the mining operations of over half a century.

The determination of suitable and safe annealing temperatures is one of the most important problems arising in the operation of a copper rolling mill. Certain of the larger mills have worked this problem out for themselves and in these mills the operation has become more or less standardized. In some of the mills pyrometers are used to measure the temperature of the annealing furnaces and careful watch is kept to see that overheating does not take place. In a considerable number of the mills, however, dependence is placed entirely on the judgment of the operator. The almost total lack of literature bearing on this subject seems sufficient warrant for the publication of this paper. ' The discussion of this subject naturally divides itself into two parts: (1) The effect of annealing temperature on physical properties; and (2) changes in the microstructure of refined copper due to cold rolling and annealing. I. The Effect of Annealing Temperature on Physical Properties For the purpose of investigating this phase of the subject six test bars were selected, varying in oxygen content between the limits of 0.036 and 0.070 per cent. "This paper describes the use of electronics for physical measurement and computer analysis in both open-pit and underground mining operations for the ultimate purpose of optimizing production blasts. Techniques in monitoring single borehole blasts using both pressure and vibration sensors to establish in-situ dynamic rock properties are outlined, including characterization of multiple borehole production blasts with regard to stress generation.Once field derived measurements are computer analyzed, they are channelled as input parallel to other data, such as the explosives thermochemical performance properties generated by a sophisticated computer program called ""HT-65"" into BLASPA . BLASPA, a blast simulation computer program, then couples these input with a mathematical model which defines the blasting processes. Aspects such as the blast geometry, explosive loads and distribution, hook-up, and costs are studied. The final output table gives specific blast performance or quality factors for each blast procedure. These results are then easily compared and rapidly optimized to achieve maximum performance at lowest blasting and drilling cost."

THE quantitative study of grain shape in three dimensions has been a difficult one from the practical standpoint. Experiments on grain shape have usually been based on indirect observations of two-dimensional metallographic samples or on grains separated by intergranular corrosion or fracture. The latter method was used in particular by Deschl in 1919 in observing the shapes of ß-brass grains which had been separated with mercury. The similarity in detail of shape and packing that exists between bubbles in a soap froth and metal grains was noted by Desch who remarks that: "Surface tension has an. important share in determining the form of the crystal grains in a solidifying metal and such grains have a tendency to assume the shape of foam cells." More recently the relation between grain shape and grain growth has been studied by Harker and Parker.' The importance of surface tension forces in determining microstructure has been discussed by Smith," and an analysis of the topologi-cal rules that apply to such structures has been made by the same author.' Biologists have made valuable contributions to the general problem of shape and form in an assembly of space-filling cells subject to surface tension forces. Particular mention must be made of the extensive researches of Lewis5,8 on botanical and anatomical tissues, and Matzke and Nestler,7,8 who have made painstaking studies of bubble shapes in different kinds of foam. The present paper introduces a new method of studying individual grains in particular alloys—a method which may well find use in other metallurgical researches, and which seems also to be applicable in biological problems. Metal Grains in Three Dimensions The individual grains in a piece of metal or the bubbles in a soap froth must satisfy two conditions —they must be in juxtaposition so as to fill space and their interfaces must conform to the laws of surface tension. If a further restriction is imposed, namely, that only one type of polyhedron be used, then the sole possibility is an assembly of "minimal" tetrakaidecahedra," each polyhedron having eight doubly-curved hexagonal faces and six plane quadrilateral faces, the angles between adjacent faces being 120". Such cells could be stacked on a body-centered cubic lattice and would be quite stable. For many years it was believed that soap bubbles actually possessed the shape of this ideal body, and the hypothesis was the starting point for several investigations on the shapes of soap bubbles, biological cells, and metal grains. These investigations have shown, what might have been obvious in the beginning, that if the condition of symmetry is relaxed the tetrakaidecahedron is almost never found. If we retain only the rule that all contacts should be in local surface tension equilibrium and that the assembly should fill space, metal grains may then take a nearly infinite variety of shapes and no single one may be regarded as an archetype. These two conditions, which are fully discussed in one of the previously mentioned papers,' lead us to think of a typical grain in an annealed metal as having the following characteristics: 1—A grain may have any number of faces, but usually between nine and eighteen. The faces (each of which is, of course, shared by two grains in the assembly) may have any number of edges, but usually between four and six. THE concept of alloying to increase the strength of metals originated during the bronze age. However, at the present time there is no single theory capable of explaining all of the observed strengthening effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties. In general, it may be said that solid solutions are stronger than the pure metal and that the strengthening effect increases with increasing alloy content. Various theories for solution hardening have been proposed, the first of which was presented by Rosenhain who suggested that the alloying elements roughened the slip planes, thereby requiring a higher stress to initiate slip. Recent work by French and Hibbard2 confirmed Norbury's3 conclusion that those alloying elements which cause a greater change in lattice parameter have larger effects on hardness. However, a given change in lattice parameter produced by different alloying elements does not cause the same change in hardness. A further refinement was suggested by Dorn, Pietrokowski, and Tietz4 who considered differences in valence between the solute and solvent with the change in lattice parameter to explain the plastic properties of aluminum alloys. Allen, Schofield, and Tate5 further investigated the valency contribution to solution strengthening by testing some copper-base solid-solution alloys having constant electron densities. Tensile tests performed on these alloys gave identical stress-strain curves even though the atomic size effect, which varied by a factor of two, was neglected. The advent of dislocation theory6-8 provided a new and powerful tool capable of explaining many phenomena of plastic deformation and indicated new approaches to solution hardening. The basic con- cept of recent theories is that solution hardening is not due to stresses associated with randomly dispersed solute atoms, but rather to a nonuniform distribution of the solute. This conclusion was reached by consideration of the effective tension present on each dislocation line and the ability of a dislocation to pass an obstacle. cottrell suggested the possibility that the internal stresses due to randomly distributed solute atoms would offer essentially no resistance to the passage of dislocations. He reasoned that an edge dislocation may be considered as a rigid line discontinuity. As the dislocation moved through a crystal, the random stress fields would be equally distributed along its length. Since half of the stress fields would be acting to move the dislocation forward and the other half trying to move it back, the net effect on the dislocation would be zero. Thus the randomly distributed solute atoms would not contribute appreciably to solution strengthening. Mott and Nabarro10 considered the dislocation as a flexible, rather than a rigid, discontinuity. They obtained a simple model for a dislocation moving in a lattice having precipated particles, where the dislocation would actually bend around the obstacle until it would loop back onto itself to rejoin and then continue onward. Their work indicated that the minimum radius of curvature of the dislocation line, under the action of an external stress and in the region of an internal stress, would be such that the dislocation would be unable to pass through a matrix containing small closely spaced precipates by the looping process. The dislocations would tend to remain rather straight, approaching the condition of Cottrell's rigid dislocation. Hence, the strengthening must not be due to random solute atoms; however, it might be due to the concentration of atoms, either as clusters of like atoms or as short-range ordered regions, or to the concentration of solute atoms around dislocations. Experimental results are given for the rate of reduction of silica from silicate melts by paphite-saturated iron in the presence of carbon monoxide. It is shown that, when gas bubbles are present at the slag-metal interface, the interfacial chemical reaction is the rate-controlling process in the transfer of silicon from slag to metal. From the silicon-concentration profiles in the metal sample, the diffusivity of silicon in paphite-saturated iron is found to be (5.4 * 0.4) x 10 sq cm per sec at 1600°C. Some consideration is given to the transport of oxygen from the slug-metal interface to the walls of the gvaphite metal container as becoming the rate-controlling process in the absence of gas bubbles at the slag-metal interface. ATTEMPTS were made by Fulton and chipman1 to investigate the kinetics of reduction of silica from calcium alumino-silicate melts by graphite-saturated iron in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide. In these experiments with 400 to 500 g of metal and slag, both phases were stirred in such a manner that the interface was essentially undisturbed. Initially, the graphite-saturated iron contained about 15 pct Si and, after about 8 or 10 hr of reaction time at 1600°C, the silicon content of the metal in- creased by about 0.2 pct. In a written discussion on this paper of Fulton and Chipman, schuhmann2 pointed out the possibility that this observed slowness of the reduction of silica could be due to the transport of oxygen across the liquid metal boundary layer at the slag-metal interface. Although this explanation of Schuhmann is quite feasible for the experimental data of Fulton and Chipman on silica reduction, such a reasoning should not be extended to other rate data on slag-metal reactions unless sufficient evidence is available satisfying the boundary conditions for such a transport process. The hydrodynamics of stirred liquids are very complex and even for a simple method of stirring there is no exact mathematical solution which will predict the mass transfer coefficient accurately. The best available solution of this problem is that given by Lewis' and later modified by mayers~ for a two-liquid system where liquids are stirred by counter-rotating stirrer blades without disturbing the interface. In such a system the mass transfer coefficient is estimated from an empirical relationship using the data on viscosity and density of the two liquids, rate of revolution, the length of stirrer blades, and the diffusivity of the element which is transferred from one phase to the other. It was found in these investigations' that the estimated and observed mass transfer coefficients, in systems containing two immiscible aqueous solutions, agreed within *40 pct. Although this is not considered to be an unreasonable error for the study of industrial processes, uncertainties of this magnitude cannot be tolerated in any theoretical study of reaction kinetics. "Three hydrometallurgicat processes (Noranda chloride leach, B. C. Research biological leach and Sherritt-Cominco activated oxygen leach) and the Noranda pyrometallurgical process have served as the basis for design projects in the final year of the chemical engineering program at the University of Toronto. Each member of a team of five or six students devotes about 200 hours to the project and the final report is expected to include an economic analysis.None of the processes has been developed to full- scale plant, nor, in the case of the B.C. Research and Noranda processes, were pilot plant data available. Nevertheless, the designs developed provide a useful basis for a preliminary estimate of capital and operating costs and for a preliminary assessment of project feasibility.This paper discusses the approach used in the design projects with respect to engineering and economic aspects, and outlines the educational features and benefits of such a program as well as some of the problem areas that arise.IntroductionAs part of the undergraduate degree course in chemical engineering at the University of Toronto, students devote some 200 hours to a design project in their final year. Hydrometallurgical processes, not yet proven at the commercial scale, have been selected for study. The students are required to develop laboratory and / or pilot scale results into a conceptual plant design, using sound engineering principles. Capital and operating costs are then determined and a preliminary feasibility study and economic analysis are carried out."

THE electric smelting of manganese ore and the production of ferro- manganese did not exist as an industry, in the United States or elsewhere, previous to the outbreak of war in 1914. Ferromanganese had been produced, electrically, during times of high prices by two companies at Niagara Falls and by several European companies, but the production. was spasmodic, and none was electrically produced when ferromanganese sold at from $35 to $40 per ton. Thus the electric smelting of manganese ore must be considered as a development caused by the high prices prevailing during the years 1916, 1917 and 1918, and the necessity of smelting domestic ore in order to fill the ferromanganese requirements of the steel industry of the United States, which increased from 189,088 tons in 1914 to 356,356 tons in 1918. The electric furnace is well adapted to smelting domestic-ore because it can be located in small units near the source of ore supply. In 1918, the ferromanganese production of the United States was 333,027 tons, of which about 7 per cent., or 23,000 tons, was produced in the electric furnace. The electric furnace not only assisted materially in the development of a domestic-ore supply but made a considerable saving of coke, as it requires about 1,4 tons of bituminous or lignite coal per ton of ferromanganese compared with a blast-furnace consumption of 2.9 tons of coke per ton of ferromanganese. Some of the plants in the United States that smelted manganese ore in the electric furnace during the war and in 1920 are listed in Tabled. From early in 1919 to about February, 1920, little ferromanganese was produced in the electric furnace. During this period the price of ferro-manganese (78 to 82 per cent. manganese) was about $100 per ton. During the first half of 1920, several plants resumed operation when the, price of. ferromanganese (76 to 80 per cent. grade) gradually increased to $200 per ton, delivered.

This paper attempts to draw together the experience of over 30 years of research and practice in the United Kingdom on the rehabilitation of abandoned metalliferous mining wastes. The reliance on water when the mines were operating has implications for water quality and the techniques used to restore sites to alleviate the principal impacts of the mines. Drivers of reclamation included concerns about human health from wind blown dust and pollution of watercourses as well as perceptions of dereliction. Techniques of reclamation used involved removal of spoil from near to surface watercourses, capping of spoil, diversion of watercourses, use of impermeable membranes, prevention of surface sinks into underground workings and the use of constructed wetlands. The issues to be dealt with in mine reclamation have become more complex and sometimes diverge. The schemes in the 1990s described have been effective in dealing with pollution from spoil heaps and small but significant adit discharges; however, significant issues, particularly those of large flows of polluted water from mine sites, still need to be dealt with. Although the paper describes the legacy of mining, which largely finished in the late 19th/early 20th century, similar issues but on a larger scale are to be found in more recent mining, for example Eastern Europe. In many of these areas minerals still remain to be won and dealing with this legacy may fall on new mining developments.

A refinement of the Seeger model for intersection process is investigated which is in better agreement with experimental observations than the original. It is shown that, in single crystals, the strain hardening in Stage II is mainly due to the short-mnge interactions when intersection is the rate-controlling process. It is also demonstrated that the creep curves, as predicted by this theory, are in good agreement with the experimental observations. MOTT: Cottrell? and Seeger have developed an approximate theory for plastic deformation of single crystals over the range of variables where the strain rate is controlled by the rate of intersection of dislocations. Although it is now generally agreed that the low temperature deformation of many pure metals is controlled by the intersection mechanism, various dictates of the over-simplified Seeger model are not in good agreement with all the experimental facts. It is the purpose of this paper to reveal that by appropriate extensions of the Seeger model, particularly those suggested by Basinski: a much more reliable theory results. The refined model to be presented here will be shown to account, in a satisfactory way, for the effect of stress, temperature, and strain on the creep rate under constant stress and for the effect of temperature and strain on the flow stress in constant strain-rate tests. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD To Check the theoretical deductions, both creep and tension tests were conducted on single crystals of high-purity Al (99.994 pct Al) so oriented that both the active slip plane and the Burger's vector of the operative dislocations on that plane made angles of about 45 deg to the tension axis. Single crystals of aluminum (5/8 in. by 1/10 in. by 8 in.) were grown in a graphite mold under an inert atmosphere using the Bridgman method. The chemical composition of the aluminum is given in Table I. A common seed was used for all crystals and their orientation is shown in Fig 3. The extensometry consisted of two differential transformers with matched outputs mounted so as to measure the extension in a 2 in. gage length. The amplified difference in output of the two transformers was recorded by a potentiometer. The amplification was calibrated before each run so that one chart division of the recording potentiometer indicated a 105 shear strain on the specimen. Stresses were measured to the nearest 1 x l04 dynes per sq cm. ACTIVATION VOLUME The concept of Basinski that the activation volume is not constant but is a function of the force that aids thermal fluctuation in effecting the cutting of dislocations will be adopted in this section. The force acting due to an applied shear stress on the dislocation being intersected is where L is the mean spacing between the forest dislocations, is the Burger's vector and T is the back stress. A detailed discussion about the origin of back stress will be taken up later in this report. As shown by Basinski, the activation energy, U, that must be supplied by a thermal fluctuation in order to effect intersection, is equal to where x is the distance through which the dislocation must be translated for complete intersection, and Fm is the maximum force encountered in intersection. When the applied stress is decreased abrupt ly F also decreases and the activation energy increases correspondingly as documented in Eqs. [ 1 ] and [2]. The prime objective of geophysical exploration is to promote the economical and rapid dis-covery of mineral or oil deposits of commercial value. To a few this concept as applied in min-ing may signify the direct discovery of ore-bodies, but to the geophysical engineer this latter Idea is one of the most insidious and detrimental misapprehensions which he has to combat. The destruction of this annoying obstacle to the progress of geophysical exploration reveals the kernel of truth behind it, that the exploration geophysicist has for the better part of two decades been concerned primarily with the discovery of mineral formations favorable to the occur-rence of commercial ore. There is a very real distinction here, since geophysical methods are capable of discovering certain mineral formations such as sulphide bodies or quartz veins, but are totally incompetent to predict whether or not they constitute ore; that is. whether or not they contain minerals of economic value in the amounts requisite to repay extraction. The art of geophysical exploration is now, however, rapidly outgrowing these early limita-tions. The rate of this growth will in large measure depend on the recognition by the mining industry of the fact that geophysics can play a role far wider and more important than it usual-ly does now, in guiding the future exploration and development of mineral deposits. It is my own firm conviction that as time marches on we will see the methods of applied geophysics turned more and more to the delineation of both minor and major structural features. The outlining of such features having a bearing on the probable loci of mineral deposition will be of inestimable value in guiding the development of a mining district. At Tapira Mine (Tapira/MG/ Brazil), the largest phosphate concentrate producer in Brazil, the mining is fully mechanized and carried out using open pit mining. This work presents a review of the sampling protocol used for short term mine planning at different stages. Sampling is carried out in two steps. Firstly, diamond drill cores are sampled at 50 x50 x5 metre pattern. Fosfertil analyses grades of P2O5, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, SiO2 and TiO2 plus geological logging. This information feeds the long term block model. Secondly, drill cuttings are collected at the mining faces released for blasting. The drilling pattern is staggered and when blasting is not necessary, a drill hole is made centered in the block area (25 x 25 x 5 m). The primary samples have mass approximately 60 kg and the same chemical parameters are analysed. Metallurgical and mass recovery tests are performed as well. These samples are used to build the short term block model. At the final stage, the short term mine planning model is used to build a stockpile blending model which is simulated using a spreadsheet to match the goals established by the process plant.

Remote sensing is being tested for its ability to identify the severity of impact on streams that are subjected to contaminated mine drainage (CMD) in the Southern Anthracite Coalfield of Pennsylvania. Airborne digital multispectral video images of acidic and near-neutral CMD are being compared with field spectra, water chemistry, mineralogy, and microbiology. Spectral differences in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum are caused by the presence of schwertmannite in the acidic precipitates and ferrihydrite in the near- neutral precipitates. The acidic CMD averages 1,500 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with schwertmannite; the near-neutral CMD averages 87 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with ferrihydrite.

ATTEMPTING to review the fundamental aspects of segregation in steel ingots of all types in a paper of reasonable length, we encounter two difficulties: (I) the fact that a large number of different physical and chemical effects are involved, and (2) rather incomplete and confusing evidence on certain aspects of detail and mechanism in the freezing process in which the segregation effect is involved. The best solution seemed to be to link together most of the underlying factors into a simplified theoretical picture that appears to the writer to explain most of the observed data, in the hope that this will serve as a reasonably good target for discussion and criticism. Segregation effects, especially in steel ingots or castings, are often divided into " microscopic " and " macroscopic," depending on whether the variations in concentration of solutes? or dissolved elements in the iron occur as: (I) a periodic variation over the small distances between the nuclei and the surfaces of the primary grains, or (2) as a larger scale effect involving concentration gradients over distances of the order of several inches, more or less. The reason for this somewhat artificial division is, of course, that it is only the macroscopic scale effect that has much practical importance. About the only effect of practical importance that results from microscopic segregation is the banded structure often left in rolled sections, and even this is relatively harmless in most cases. However, the causes of microscopic segregation also underly the larger scale effect, so we must first consider matters such as the formation and growth of crystal nuclei, selective freezing and diffusion, and others that are fundamental to all segregation effects. UNDERCOOLING AND NUCLEI FORMATION It is probable that although the degree of undercooling is small in iron, as in metals in general, a certain amount of it takes place, and also that the number of crystal nuclei increases very rapidly with increased undercooling below the liquidus tempera¬ture. In practical terms this means that the nuclei number increases very rapidly with increased cooling or freezing rate, thus being dependent on the rate of heat flow out from the zone of crystallization. TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS AND HEAT DISSIPATION DURING FREEZING Each pound of steel evolves about 100 B.t.u. when freezing. In addition to this, the temperature gradient in the solidified portion (required to dissipate the heat as freezing progresses into the axis) necessitates a loss of heat required to cool the solid metal below its freezing range, which is equivalent to an amount of not so much less in magnitude. In a 5-ton ingot, the total would include about one million B.t.u. for freezing alone and about 0.4 to 0.5 million B.t.u. for the gradient, up to the end of the freezing period: Thus the rate of freezing depends primarily on the rate of heat dissipation. One of the greatest factors in our industrial development is cheap and convenient power. Long-distance electrical transmission has now reached such a stage that it is feasible, and practicable, to utilize the water-power of the country which was heretofore too remote for consideration. In all of the changes of energy from its various sources to its electrical applications, water-power stands pre-eminent in point of economy. Power-users the world over have endeavored to utilize this force in preference to any other, and until long-distance transmission was found practicable it seemed that every available water-power in this section of the country was doing its full share for the benefit of mankind. The success of each great industrial development has been clue in a greater part to some one man one who is just a step in advance of the rest in his particular field; one who is able to grasp a situation and foresee possibilities; and, above all, one who has that indomitable pluck and perseverance which sees in each obstacle one more step toward success. Such a mail is Eugene L. Ashley, for it was through his efforts that the development of the greatest power on the Hudson river was made possible. For several years prior to 1897 the various properties along the river between Glens Falls and Palmer Falls were in the hands of speculators. These men knew the value of waterrights, but they had not the ability to assemble the properties and finance such an undertaking. In 1897 Mr. Ashley began buying these water-rights, and, after two years of litigation, title mas secured to all of the properties along each side of the river, and the Hudson River Water-Power Company was organized to construct a dam and transmit power to the surrounding cities and villages.
