The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation into the occurrence of outbursts of salt known to be responsible for explosions, fatalities, and damage in domal salt mines. The purpose of the investigation was to develop a basis for predicting these outbursts based on geologic and associated physical properties of salt. The investigation was conducted at the Cote Blanche salt mine in southern Louisiana. Because outbursts are the primary mode of methane emission into the mine, more than 80 outbursts, ranging in size from 1 to 50 ft in diameter have been mapped. These outbursts generally are aligned and elongate parallel to the direction of salt layering. More than 200 salt samples, both random and selected, were tested for methane content. It was found that outburst zones are well correlated with high methane content. Detailed mapping also revealed that the zones are well defined, with salt crystal size abruptly increasing upon entry into the zone. The intensity of folding and kinking of the salt layering within the outburst zone also appears to increase. An interbedded sand layer occurring throughout the mine does not appear to be a significant source of methane. However, fine-grained salt may be related to outburst occurrence.

Experimental modifications have been made by the Bureau of Mines on standard pneumatic rock drills to reduce the noise of the air exhaust, drill steel resonance noise, and noise radiated by the drill body. A close-fitting case and muffler around the drill body, consisting of a metallic honeycomb skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber on the inside and a durable outer shell, provide both exhaust and drill body noise muffling and absorption. Drill steel resonance noise is reduced by a constrained-layer treatment consisting of a tubular metal cover bonded to the ouside of the rod by a viscoelastic filler. Damping alloy components have been developed to reduce metallic resonance noise. Combined, these modifications have reduced the drilling noise level in granite from 115 dbA to 97 dbA. Data are presented on the individual and combined effects of these modifications on drilling noise and performance.

The ?Kolwezi Zinc Plant?, in French ?Usines à Zinc de Kolwezi? (UZK), has produced about 910 000 dry metric tons of residues during the hydrometallurgical treatment of calcines from sulphide zinc concentrates. The zinc hydro plant residues contain on average 19.47% Zn, 2.7% Cu, 2.1% Pb, 26.6% Fe, 0.12% Cd, 0.39% As, 157ppm Ag, 447.8 ppm Ga, 475.4 ppm Ge, etc. This material was dumped in five ponds in the vicinity of the plant. The high Fe content in the ore concentrates induced important conversion of some of zinc and copper into ferrites during the roasting process. Those ferrites are very stable compounds, which are difficult to leach with dilute sulphuric acid solution. Therefore, they mainly report to the leaching residues. Hot leaching has been successfully applied to the treatment of zinc hydro plant residues. The method, however, presents the disadvantage of simultaneously dissolving iron(Fe). It is then necessary to remove an important iron quantity from solution prior to zinc and other metals recovery.

"Since the industrial revolution, plastic products sector has growing bigly, however this fact presents as consequence the increase of municipal plastic waste (MPW).The aim of this work is to developmet polymer mixture from MPW with the adittion of rubber tire (TR) post use and to study the mechanical and morphologycal properties. The polymer mixtures Polypropylene/High impact polystyrene/TR (PP/HIPS/TR), where rate weight TR used was 10, 20 and 30 % and with three size particles (500, 710 e 1000 µm). The specimen tests were obtained by injection molding. Preliminary results of mechanical properties showed that the increase of TR influence in a reduction of the flexural and tensile resistance. Results by scanning electronic microscopy on the fracture surface of mixtures PP/HIPS/TR showed a better interaction of TR particle with HIPS than with PP. Also, the presence of microcavoids was observed, characteristic in PP/HIPS blends, favouring in the increase of its opacity.IntroductionOne great part of the municipal solid waste (MSW) is composed of polymer mixed since commodity plastics, blend to polymer composite. The processing of plastics mixtures for recycling has been attempted with some success, but poor mechanical properties and uncertain economic value limit their more versatile reuse. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) are among the most common plastic waste, predominantly used in packaging food industry [1].One other problem that preoccupy to the society is the increase of rubber tire waste in the proportion of MSW. In Brazil, from 1999 to 2004, 39 % from 386 mil ton of tire post-use were destined to ciment Industry as source of energy [2]. However this destiny produces one other problem, environment pollution, due to gas mixture emitted.Recycling represents a valid alternative to the disposal of post-consumer plastics in common landfills if it is possible to obtain new materials with good final properties compatible with practical and, above all, by cheap methods [3]The reutilization of group tire rubber (TR) powder as a dispersed elastomeric phase in a thermoplastic matrix offers an opportunity to design second generation materials which would be recyclable due to the thermoplastic matrix and which potentially could present thermoplastic elastomer (TPE)-like mechanical behavior. During 1983, 42.2% of the 686.0 (624.3 Mt) million tons of coal reported, 289.6 (263.5 Mt) million tons were mechanically cleaned, of which 107 (97.4 Mt) million tons were cleaned by dense media (magnetite and sand) processes.' The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 38% between 1938 and 1983. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that 150 million tons (137 Mt) of coal were cleaned by heavy-media processes in 1986, and that this number may increase to 265 million tons (241 Mt) by 1990.2 Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes that clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes generally offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: • Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of raw coal whose specific gravity is near the specific gravity of separation. • Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled within + 0.005 sp gr units. • Ability to handle a wide range of coal sizes. • Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. • Ability to handle fluctuations in feed, in terms of both quantity and quality. Unfortunately, dense medium processes can have the following disadvantages: • Relatively high capital costs caused primarily by the need for equipment to collect and recycle the medium. Relatively high operating costs caused primarily by operation of medium recycle equipment and loss of medium.

Thirty-six elements have been alloyed singly with cartridge brass. Ammonia and mercury stress-cracking tests have been conducted on the as-rolled and recrystallized strip. Ultra high purity cartridge brass has also been tested. Silicon improves stress- cracking behavior. High silicon (I per cent) cartridge brass quenched from high temperature (for example, 800 C.) annealing is exceptionally resistant to ammonia stress cracking. This improvement is not lost by subsequent cold working, but is greatly reduced by subsequent low temperature annealing. Phosphorus, arsenic, barium, cerium, magnesium, tellurium, tin, beryllium, and manganese benefit stress-corrosion resistance under some circumstances, but not others. The other alloying additions tried had no large effect on stress-cracking resistance. None of the elements added accelerated stress cracking. The impurities in commercial brass are not responsible for season cracking.

In a brief summary of the many occurrences of fluorspar in our western states, it is not possible to go into detail in regard to the geology, mining and milling methods, and reserves about individual deposits. Rather a broad review is made of the occurrences and an analysis of how the western deposits may fit into our future domestic economy is presented. General Statement on Fluorspar Situation Fluorspar has been used for years as a flux in the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel, in foundry cupolas for melting pig iron, in the manufacture of opalescent glass and in the preparation of hydrofluoric acid. In 1880 the annual production of fluorspar in the United States was around 4000 tons per year. By 1900 it was up to 21,656 tons and between 1902 and 1908 it averaged about 40,000 tons annually. Prices were then so low, by present standards, that it seems impossible to believe now that mining could have been performed profitably at the price levels then prevailing. In 1890 fluorspar sold at the mines for $6.70 per ton, in 1901 for $5.81, in 1916 for 85.92. When the United States entered World War I, flyorspar production and price skyrocketed; the production reached 263,817 tons in 1918, with prices above $20.00 per ton, and prices were even higher in 1919 and 1920. After 1920, the domestic production fell from the 1918 level to about 125,000 tons annually and the average price dropped back to about $18.00 per ton. By 1935 the average price had fallen to $15.00, but in 1940 with a rising demand the average price of all grades had gone back up to $20.31. Today it is 75 per cent higher than in 1940 and presumably the price of acid grade at .least would be even higher if it were not for price ceilings. The first subsequent year that the domestic production exceeded that of 1918 was 1941, and the 1944 production is expected to exceed 400,000 tons, or over one and a half times that of 1918. In five-year periods, average production and imports were as are shown in Table I. Many people concerned with the consumption of fluorspar believe that the postwar period ahead will show a repetition of price trends of the last such period. They believe that imports will be again an important factor in the available supply and the price will fall back gradually toward the prewar level. Much of western New South Wales is characterised by an extensive regolith formed during more than 60 million years of exposure, weathering and erosion. This cover includes intensely weathered in situ regolith and superimposed transported materials of variable thickness, commonly in complex palaeochannel systems. Mineral exploration in this region has been considerably hampered by the cover, which can complicate or maskgeochemical anomalies and also obscure geophysical signatures. A detailed multi-disciplinary study of part of this region, centred on the Cobar-Girilambone area has demonstrated a methodology for exploring through this regolith. The approach involves regolith-landform mapping to establish the main landscape and palaeolandscape elements and to determine the nature and spatial occurrence of different regolith materials. By combining knowledge of the surface distribution of different regolith-landform units with available 3D information on the regolith and geophysical data it is possible to construct simplified derivative maps or exploration ægoÆ maps, which can be used to advise appropriate exploration strategies or help interpret acquired exploration data. This study has also established the major regolith controls on geochemical dispersion and determined key background element associations. These regolith-related element associations can result in highly variable background levels for many trace elements and need to be understood and factored into the analysis of geochemical data for different regolith sampling media. With better knowledge of the regolith it is possible to select the most appropriate exploration techniques and sampling media for a given area, as well as apply appropriate normalisation procedures to the acquired data. Exploration success can be greatly improved by using many existing techniques in æregolith smartÆways.

The fatigue behauior of irradiated copper single crystals is compared to that of unirradiated crystals. Proton or electron irradiation did not substantially change the fatigue-lzj.e, fatigue-hardening-, or slip-line characteristics, while neutron irradiation did appear to alter these parameters. Postfatigue transrrzission electron microscopy did not reveal any marked structural differazces between irradiated and unirradiated specimens. Possible dislocatio~a mechanisnzs to explain the observed behavior are discussed. A LTHOUGH considerable work has been done to ascertain the effects of radiation on the tensile properties of metals (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2), little work of a basic nature has been reported on the effect of radiation on fatigue properties. Since it is known that fatigue properties are sensitive to conditions at the surface of the metal, it was felt that charged particle irradiation, whose penetration into metals is very small, might influence the fatigue behavior. To investigate this surface effect, irradiations with 10 mev protons and 1.5 mev electrons were conducted. The range of 10 mev protons in copper is about 0.236 mm; which is very small compared with the thickness of the specimens used (1.53 mm). The range of 1.5 mev electrons is somewhat larger, on the order of 0.665 mm.4 On the other hand, irradiation with reactor neutrons produces damage throughout the entire specimen, so neutron irradiation can be used to study the effects of bulk damage. The damage introduced by proton and neutron irradiation is expected to con!ist of large interstitial dislocation loops,5 tiny (<25A) vacancy loops," and/or various vacancy-rich regions called depleted zones.&apos; In the case of electron irradiation at about -173°C the damage is expected to consist of isolated Frenkel pairs.&apos; The effect of radiation damage on the fatigue properties of some engineering materials has been reported,g,10 but the results are not clear-cut or consistent. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Zone-refined copper was used to grow single crystals by a modified Bridgeman technique in an inert helium atmosphere. Using a seeding method, single crystals were obtained as bars about 6 in. long with a cross section of 3 by $ in. Immediately upon removal from the split-mold graphite boat in which they were grown, the very soft bars were embedded in a room-temperature setting plastic. They could then be cut into specimen lengths without introducing any long-range damage. Generally, four or five specimens plus one seed were obtained from each bar. The plastic material was dissolved away in acetone and the orientation of each sample was checked by the standard Laue X-ray

SUMMARY Initial interest in using solutions of ammonium salts to leach native copper was documented in notes from an AIME meeting in 1871; By 1916-1917, application of the NH3-CO2-H2O system to recover nonferrous metals attained commercial significance, when it was used as a process for copper recovery by Kennecott Copper Corporation and Calumet & Hecla Mining Company. The Caron work in the early 1920s, Freeport Sulphur Company’s achievements leaching Cuban laterites during World War II, out- standing accomplishments in both eastern and western Canada, recovery of manganese related to the work of Dean -- all serve as landmarks as this One Century Review surveys a base for future technology. Current emphasis on compatibility of metals-producing systems with the need to meet environmental protection criteria provides special encouragement to researchers and engineers to find accept- able ways of recovering metals. The ever-present demand of management to design, build and operate facilities on a profitable basis provides additional impetus to apply information from the technical literature to that need. Examination of the general approach to this paper will reveal much that is firm and positive with respect to empirical results -- extractions, recoveries, amenability to familiar proven equipment and materials of construction common to the industry. Although there are many references, there are gaps in the basic scientific data that if filled could lead to even more usefulness; the paper attempts to indicate where further information is needed.

Bolting forms a prestressed elastic layer of rock which is capable of supporting loads at right angles to the bolted surface. Investigations on rock bolting made with a number of different models give rise to empirical and theoretical prin- ciples for the formation and action of the layer. In the models, flat and arched layers of many materials were used simulating rock conditions ranging from closely interlocked blocks to fragments of various shapes. Results of observations made in the underground works of the Snowy Mountains Scheme are related to the mode of action of bolted surface layers of rock. There is abundant experimental, theoretical and practical explanation for the well-demonstrated capability of bolting as a means of rock support.

"Because of its interest in accident prevention, the U.S. Bureau of Mines cooperates with city officials and utilities in investigating the causes of explosions in sewers, manholes, and other underground openings and in developing means for preventing such explosions. For several years this Bureau has been cooperating with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. in detecting and eliminating combustibles and physiologically harmful gases in manholes in the city of Boston and adjacent territory.These Bureau of Mines investigations° have shown that combustible gases from the usual sources — leakage from gas—distributing systems and from underground tanks and gasoline wastes — can be located and the dangerous conditions remedied by a well—planned, adequately supervised, systematic, and continuous manhole survey. However, other types of gas, which are termed here ""soil"" gases, also occur in manholes and are more difficult to eliminate because they have no fixed origin and because seasonal and barometric changes affect their production and passage into the manhole space. These gases appear to be produced by bacterial and fermentation or through reactions of entrapped air in the soil. Soil usually abnormally high in carbon dioxide and low in oxygen, and contain varying amounts of methane. They are especially clangorous to men entering manholes because they lack sufficient oxygen to support life. Owing to the difficulty of constructing gastight manholes the most feasible method for eliminating soil gases from manholes is by ventilation. Consequently the Bureau of Mines initiate 4 study of natural ventilation methods for the removal of these gases from manholes and also for taking care of unforeseen accumulations of combustible gases and vapors.The following factors were considered by the Bureau to be important to the natural ventilation of manholes: (1) Relation of area of ventilation opening* to the capacity of the manholes, (2) size and shape of the manhole, (3) design of the ventilation opening (4) and velocity, and (5) weather conditions."

The literature dealing with the physical constants of nickel is so fragmentary and unrelated that a synopsis presents unusual difficulties. It is only within the last few years that investigators have understood the importance of placing on record not only the determinations they have made but also the composition, physical treatment, and past history of the material investigated. For this reason much of the earlier literature is valueless. Determinations have been made of the same physical constants on samples differing widely in origin, composition, and treatment, and the results differ widely among themselves. In the first place nickel is almost as flexible a term as steel. Its physical properties are widely influenced by its composition and treatment. It absorbs large quantities of gases and is exceedingly difficult to prepare in a state of chemical purity comparable to gold, silver, or copper. It is vitally affected by thermal and mechanical treatment. Hence in the following pages the recorded literature, where quoted, must be accepted with a certain reserve and used, as far as possible, as a check on later observations, in which these important factors are noted. In every case where new determinations are given, an attempt has been made to record all available information concerning the composition and treatment of the material used so that the data may serve as stepping-stones toward a wider knowledge of the properties of the metal. As this synopsis is an attempt by men of metallurgical training to do what should long before have been done by physicists, it is to be expected that certain errors may have crept in. TAE chemical industry is constantly looking for new materials which either are more resistant to corrosion than those now available or have improved physical properties to meet the requirements of higher temperatures and greater pressures. Attack by acids is-one of the more important forms of corrosion-and in the last few years the development of acid-resistant alloys has been quite rapid. Perhaps the most notable example is that of nitric acid, &apos;the problem of which has largely been solved by the chromium-iron and chromium-iron-nickel alloys. Sulfuric acid may be handled in lead, iron, or the iron-silicon alloys, depending on conditions. As to hydrochloric acid, no metal or alloy can be called entirely satisfactory for handling. this acid under plant conditions.1 The results of our investigations on the resistance of the nickel-molybdenum alloys to hydrochloric acid have been confirmed by those of Guertler, Rohn, Schulz, Jenge, and others,&apos; but thus far only one such alloy has approached commercial production in Germany; this contains approximately 15 per cent. chromium and 7 per cent. molybdenum with the remainder chiefly nickel. Dr. S. W. Parr, as far back as 1914, developed a complex alloy known as "illium," with a nickel base and containing some molybdenum.3 Dr. Parr was primarily interested in an alloy for lining bomb calorimeters, and while illium does show good resistance to acid it is too expensive for general use. The federal government kicked off the new budget season in November 1978, when Finance Minister Chretien announced a handful of proposed amendments to provisions of the federal Income Tax Act and Regulations affecting mining. (See Tax Notes in the January 1979 issue of the CIM Bulletin.) Declaring in his budget speech that these changes were in response to the report of the joint federal/provincial task force on resource taxation, Mr. Chretien tossed the ball to the provinces-" I want to take the lead here... I feel confident that the provinces will do their part". Quebec and Ontario, picking up the ball in their spring budgets, have announced favourable modifications to the provincial taxes on mining, with these moves being paralleled in the recent Manitoba budget, which proposes a flatrate mining tax to replace the previous controversial two-tier royalty. In the meantime, the federal government passed a host of amendments to the federal earned depletion regulations. The result is yet another batch of complex tax changes for the industry to note and digest, but this time with the hopeful factor that most of the changes are favourable to the industry. This article reviews the current status of the federal budget changes, comments on the Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba proposals, and reports on the changes to the earned depletion regulations that were passed by Order-in Council in March 1979.

Early research on coal dust explosions by the Federal Bureau of Mines and in other countries is reviewed to examine the effect of a single inhibitor, rock dust, on the explosion limits of coal dust. The parameters studied in this research included coal dust fineness, volatile content, and type of initiation. This research resulted in appropriate safety regulations in the respective countries. Also reported are the results of recent research in the Experimental Mine of the Bureau of Mines to investigate in detail the limits of coal dust explosions; the research used three types of coal with rock dust added as the independent variable. New experimental techniques and new criteria for defining propagation/nonpropagation were applied to the experiments. Also, a limit explosion propagation model is proposed based on the assumption of rapid devolatilization of the coal particles, with the subsequent combustion of the evolved volatile products contributing primarily to the propagation of the explosions. The model assumes also that the resultant char acts mainly as an inert diluent similar to the rock dust. The model also suggests that the function of stronger initiation is mostly to lift more dust from the mine surfaces.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a rock mass classification system for coal mine roof control. The Coal Mine Roof Rating System (CMRR) evaluates the structural competence of mine roof using simple field tests and observations obtained from underground exposures in roof falls or overcasts. The basis of the WRR is a weighing system which converts descriptive geologic roof rock data to a numerical value, facilitating its use in engineering design. A full suite of data collection and hand calculation sheets accompanies the CHRR A data base is currently being collected from all major coal basins in the United States to validate the CMW. To date, CHRR values are available from 96 roof exposures in 59 coal mines representing these basins. The system can be used to help solve many practical ground control problems, including longwall gate road design, roof support selection, and decisions regarding extended cut length.
