The White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. The peculiar features which give special interest to this paper are the branching, tree-like form of the ore-bodies; the absence of zones of secondary enrichment in the partly oxidized pyritic deposits, and the fact that while the deposits are associated in a general way with the contact of an eruptive rock with limeetone, which it penetrates, the garnetization has taken place not in the limestone, as is the usual case, but in the igneous

A high strength steel strand bolt has been developed by Barrett, Fuller & Partners as a replacement for conventional rigid bars for primary roof support in coal mines. It is based on a 23mm diameter multiwire steel strand with a tensile strength of 55 to 60 tonnes, The paper summarizes the development of FLEXIBOLT flexible roof bolts, their reinforcement performance and their potential to provide operators, currently reliant on medium to high density roof bolting systems, with a viable, low density roof bolting system offering high roof reinforcement capacity along with the option of installing bolts longer than headroom, in a single pass at the face.

Comprehensive geophysical measurements were made in the Tertiary Channel gravel deposits of Badger Hill, Calif., with the refraction seismograph, gravimeter, and well logging equipment, to develop a three-dimensional physical model of the gold-bearing gravels. Tests were also made of the applicability of magnetometer and electrical resistivity techniques. Results of 14 seismic profiles revealed four distinct layers with velocities of 1,600 ft/sec for loose gravel, 5,900 ft/sec for compact gravel, 8,600 ft/sec for cemented, blue gravel, and 15,500 ft/sec for bedrock. The depth to bedrock along the middle of the channel varied from a minimum of 100 feet in the hydraulically mined pit area to a maximum of about 300 feet in the upper bench area immediately south of the pit. These geophysical methods revealed that 40 percent of the drill holes necessary to delineate the deposit could be eliminated, at a cost saving of at least 30 percent.

A comparison of the isotope-dilution, vacuum-fusion, and chemical methods of analysis for nitrogen in Si-Fe is made with particular emphasis on the effect of sample history. The superiority of the isotope-dilution method from the point of view of 1 HE analytical techniques used to determine nitrogen in Si-Fe have been subjected to close scrutiny in recent years primarily because of the marked influence of the element on the properties of the alloy. SOME of the most important hydrometallurgical developments in recent years relate to processes involving the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aque- ous suspension at elevated temperatures by air or oxygen under pressure. Extremely difficult ground conditions were encountered in the main belt entry in a room and pillar mine in West Virginia. Several generations of supplemental support, including cable bolts, cribbing, and Heintzmann jacks and beams failed to halt roof falls that threatened workers safety and the life of the mine. Polyurethane (PUR) was injected into 27 intersections in the roof and the results were monitored by borehole video camera. The mine had averaged 2-3 falls in the beltway per year and, since the roof injection, no roof falls have occurred. Pre- and post injection monitoring of test holes showed that stability can be achieved without filling all of the existing void spaces. Video logging showed that the project goal of building a beam from 2-6 ft into the roof was successful. Pre-injection monitoring of roof fractures uphole can delineate the zones to target for reinforcement, and avoid pumping PUR into large voids to little effect. Multiple-¬injection zones can be identified, and the entire intersection drill hole array can be optimized based on knowledge of the fractured zones. In addition, pre-monitoring can prevent excessive hydrofracturing in solid zones. Polyurethane injection is a proven method of rock stabilization in even the weakest, most broken ground. Optimization of the injection design by pre-injection video diagnostics can greatly contribute to the successful and efficient roof stabilization.

The interface morphology of the Mg-32 wt pct A1 eutectic has been studied in terms of the freezing rate, the temperature gradient, and the impurity content. For the impure eutectic it has been found that for a given temperature gradient a fast freezing rate favors the formation of a cellular intwface with sub-grain strucfure. This cellular interface can be changed to a planar interface of the same substructure either by decreasing the freezing rate or by increasing the temperature gradient. For the eutectic of highest purity, as purified by zme-refining, no cellular interface was found for any growth condition and only a planar interface with subgrain structure was observed. Furthermore, a layer of liquid adhering to the interface during de-cantation freezes with shapes and sizes of the phase particles different from those in the main eutectic solid. WHEN a molten metal or a binary eutectic liquid with zero freezing range is solidified unidirec-tionally, a cellular interface is usually formed-3 This interface is schematically represented by Fig. 1. The profile of the solid-liquid interface has a corrugated shape, as shown in Fig. l(a), while the decanted interface consists of cells, as shown in Fig. l(b). The cell boundary in a frozen eutectic is distinguishable from the cell interior by changes in particle shapes, as shown in Fig. 4. The formation of a cellular interface, according to Weart and ack,' is attributed to a layer of constitutionally supercooled" liquid generated at the advancing interface by the simultaneous rejection of an impurity by the two phases of the eutectic mixture, which then permits freezing over an appreciable temperature range. This concept has been further elaborated by Tiller, who predicts that even in the absence of an impurity the rejection of solute ahead of each lamella of the eutectic may promote the formation of a cellular interface. I Should like to commence by saying how much I appreciate the honor which the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers has done me in inviting me to visit your country, and to deliver this lecture before you. In choosing a subject, and in deciding what to include and what to omit, I have endeavored to discuss as far as possible work carried out recently in Europe with which you may not be unduly familiar. It would be poor return for your hospitality, and a mistaken sort of compliment indeed, if I were to load the lecture with accounts of researches carried out in your own country—researches with which you are probably better acquainted than I. Not that I have in any way excluded work done on this side of the Atlantic from my survey; one would indeed find it difficult to write on this, or on any other branch of science, without mentioning American work. But I have endeavored as far as possible to concentrate on aspects of the case which will, I hope, be comparatively fresh to you, and I feel fairly certain that this will be in accordance with your own wishes. Films Produced at Elevated Temperatures If a strip of iron is heated strongly at one end, the other end remaining cold, there is produced over the heated portion a layer of oxide scale, the thickness of which diminishes steadily with the distance from the hot end. Somewhere in the middle of the strip, the thickness of the oxidized layer will become comparable to the wave length of light, and over this region the thin films give rise to a series of beautiful interference tints, commonly known as "temper colors." The colors are caused by the fact that two trains of light waves are reflected respectively from the outer and inner surfaces of the oxide film, and the possibility arises that the "crests" of one series of waves may coincide with the "troughs" of the other, thus diminishing the intensity of the light of some particular wave length. The Bureau of Mines conducted tests using a tracer-gas technique to measure the effectiveness of the jet fan, which is often employed in mines to ventilate dead headings. Results of these tests show that jet fans can (1) ventilate dead headings beyond the maximum penetration distance indicated by smoke-tube detection of air movement, and (2) redistribute available fresh air through larger working areas. However, if the fresh air base is insufficient, the fan will merely recirculate the contaminated air and disperse it over a larger volume.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Institute of Mineral Research of Michigan Technological University, and the Upper Great Lakes Regional Commission, conducted an investigation of electronic sorting of native copper ore from Upper Michigan. This report is based on research by the Institute of Mineral Research under contract to the Bureau. The test program evaluated the use of belt and rotary sorters on various size and grade fractions of ore. Both plant-scale sorting and lab sorting tests were run. The plant sorting objectives were to determine the sortability of different ores and the efficiency of the electronic ore sorters. High-and low-grade ores from both conglomerate and amygdaloid types were separated into four size fractions. The two larger sizes were sorted on belt sorters and the two smaller ones on rotary sorters. Copper recoveries ranged from 20.0 pct from a feed grade of 0.40 pct to 80.3 pct from a feed grade of 1.08 pct. Lab sorting tests of conglomerate ore were run to determine the efficiency of a belt sorter equipped with a second sensing coil located above the belt and to determine the sorting characteristics of larger ore size fractions than those used in the plant sorting. Copper recoveries from the combined feed sizes ranged from 47.0 pct from a feed grade of 0.13 pct to 96.8 pct from a feed grade of 4.87 pct. For all the ore types except one, it was found that the copper recovery increased with the feed size.

Subsidence is controlled by a complex combination of mining and geologic factors. For example, a world-wide compilation of data shows that, as the percentage of shale in the overying rock mass decreases and the amount of sandstone increases, the angle of draw (and the area affected by subsidence) decreases. Limestone in the overburden appears to cause as much as a three-fold decrease in the angle of draw compared to a like amount of sandstone. Increased amounts of sandstone were accompanied by a greater surface subsidence relative to the mining height. The total thickness of overburden did not appear to influence the subsidence magnitude above super-critical panels. The greater the thickness extracted the smaller percentage of that thickness that shows up at the surface as subsidence. The greater the percent of the seam extracted, the greater the subsidence reaching the surface. The maximum subsidence above room and pillar panels is dependent on the pillar height and minimum width as well as the other factors listed.

The processes involved in the concentration of magnetite ore with process water as the aqueous medium can have a strong influence on the surface properties of the magnetite particles. In this study, different leaching methods, as well as zeta potential measurements, were used to examine the major easily accessible ions on the particle surfaces and their effect on the surface charge. The results show that the enrichment of elements on the surface of the particles appears early in the refinement process. Ca was enriched up to 15 times and Si up to 50 times compared to what pore water alone would have given. The leaching experiments also showed that the addition of water glass increased the surface enrichment of Si and that the collector might hinder desorption of Ca. An alkali leaching method was evaluated, which showed that Si was much more enriched than S and Cl. Zeta potential measurements on synthetic magnetite particles showed that process water resulted in zeta potentials different from the potentials measured for these particles in aqueous calcium and silicate solutions. Therefore, it is important to consider the complexity of the process water when making predictions about the properties of the particle surfaces in the final magnetite concentrate, which most studies do not. Zeta potential measurements were also used to rule out a strong influence from organic matter in the process water on the magnetite zeta potential.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines explored new methods and technology for extracting coal from the Appalachian Mountain region of the Eastern United States. These methods were aimed at extracting coal from thin seams and focused on the use of "roof-fall-tolerant" (RFT) mining concepts. These methods could be used on existing, abandoned highwalls or in conjunction with new highwall mining. The research was conducted using small-scale and quasi-full-scale physical models to obtain experimental results. Details are provided on (1) the quasi-full-scale model for cross-ridge mining, (2) the quasi-full-scale model for down-ridge mining, (3) the test results of these models, and (4) recommendations for future research. Significant results include demonstration of the RFT concept, a discussion of expected coal produced from these methods, and recommendations for future research.
