INTRODUCTION KNOWLEDGE of the thermal capacity of gases is of great importance in making metallurgical calculations. The metallurgist is, frequently called upon to investigate and determine furnace efficiencies in which the heat carried into or out of the furnace by gases is a large item in the heat balance. Not only do such problems present themselves in the determination of furnace efficiency, but also in the study of the application of heat is accessory apparatus, such as stoves, regenerators, waste-heat boilers, driers,.etc. The thermal effect of the use of excess air in the combustion of fuel, the theoretical temperatures of combustion, the quantity of heat in hot blast at various temperatures, the effect of hot blast on furnace temperatures, are a few more examples of frequently occurring calorific problems involving gases. So many are the applications of the data on the heat capacity of gases that the subject merits careful study. The heat in a gas maybe due to its heat of combustion, if it is a combustible gas, and to its temperature. The latter is called its sensible heat and is the heat absorbed or evolved by a gas as its temperature is raised or lowered. The heat of combustion of gases is well established and is commonly known. The values can be found in almost any mcdern treatise on metallurgy. The sensible heat of gases has not been so well established because it is in most cases a function of the temperature, and the values of specific heats of gases over a wide range of temperatures have only recently been determined. It is the purpose of this paper to deal with the sensible heat of gases.

An account of the operation of the Noranda smelter covering the period from December, 1927, when the smelter started, until December, 1929, was given in a paper published by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy early in 1930.' The object of the present paper is to review matters of interest in the original paper and to describe the present construction and operation of the smelter, with particular reference to the reverberatory-furnace practice. The Noranda smelter was built by Noranda Mines, Ltd., from the designs of A. E. Wheeler, consulting metallurgist of New York, for the reduction of ores and concentrates from the Horne mine and to treat, on a custom basis, ores and concentrates from other mines in the Rouyn district. The smelter is at Noranda, about 330 miles directly north of Toronto. Construction work was started in June, 1926, and copper was first produced in December, 1927. The smelter was built throughout as two duplicate units, each with a rated capacity of 500 tons of ore per day. Operations were started with one unit and after several months it was found that one unit alone could smelt 1000 tons of ore a day. At that time there was only one hoisting shaft, No. 3, and its hoisting capacity and the capacity of the original crushing plant were insufficient to supply ore for the two units at the increased tonnage. Accordingly No. 4 shaft was sunk and a new crushing plant provided to handle the ore hoisted there. Operating two units at capacity also required the installation of two more converters to treat the additional quantity of matte produced. This work was completed in the latter part of November, 1929, and since then both smelter units have been operating continuously. In 1928, a mill to treat 500 tons a day of concentrating ore was completed. Since then the concentrator capacity has been increased twice, and at present 2000 tons a day of ore are being concentrated. The layout of the surface plant of the mine, concentrator and smelter is shown in Fig. 1 and the general plan in Fig. 2. The smelter is shown in more detail in Fig. 3. IN the routine examination of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of nonmetallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-free surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimens such as tool metals con-taining various carbide and nitride phases. It is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work.

"The Apex Mine is currently scheduled to be brought back into production by Hecla in the first quarter of1990. Its projected productivity rate will be exceptionally high for a small underhand cut and fill mine.The ore mined at the Apex Mine occurs within a pipe-like structure as a series of iron oxides containing both gallium and germanium, plus significant amounts of silver, zinc, lead, and copper.Ground conditions in and around the ore zone have dictated that unique approaches be utilized. To date, these have included a prototype 0.5 cu. yd diesel LHD, and the use of fibrous shotcrete in 4ft by 7ft headings, and the first pneumatically-placed cemented backfill in North America. Above all else, it is the combination of new technologies with a small and dedicated workforce which has allowed for the successful development of this ore body.IntroductionThe Apex Mine is an example of the typical small underground project. It has high grade, but low tonnage and is deposited in poor ground. In such cases, conventional planning and thinking generally results in an uneconomical evaluation and negative production decision. Fortunately, some unconventional thinking was allowed to take place during the planning and evolution of the Apex Mine development. The result now serves as an example of how such unconventional thinking can lead to the type of innovations described below.The job necessitated the development and use of new equipment and materials to execute a highly flexible underhand cut and fill mine design/pneumatic backfill concept, that must be constantly modified as different than assumed conditions become evident in and around the ore zone."

Twenty years of research into the design of permanent gateroad support (packs) in coal mines have resulted in two methods of pack design based on engineering principles. The first, the detached block concept, is based on static loading of the support system by an hypothetical detached block. The second, the roof beam tilt concept, is based on the dynamic loading of the support system as the roof beam tilts over the roadway about a pivot point located in the rib-side. The roof beam tilt concept has been used on a number of occasions to design packs in a variety of conditions. However, recent work in the Sydney Coalfield of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, has shown that design criteria based on the roof beam tilt concept in its present state of development are far from universal in application. After a review of published pack performance data, including detailed studies conducted in the UK, France and Canada, it was found that consideration of the mechanical properties of the roof beam produced a design criterion that fitted the available data. Modifications to the design process using the roof beam tilt concept are suggested for use in pack design. The work also revealed that current research in other aspects of coal mine ground control, particularly the areas of powered support design and subsidence prediction, may provide valuable information leading to major advances in this field. Such developments could also extend the application of the roof beam tilt concept to the design of pillar systems.

Introduction The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation will present its contribution to the A. M. Gaudin Flotation Symposium in four parts. The first two segments will discuss briefly the historical development of the Utah Copper Division and describe the ore body. The third segment will review the facilities and operating procedures for the Utah Copper division's newest plant, the Bonneville Concentrator. The fourth segment describes flotation process circuitry, including molybdenite recovery procedures, at the Arthur and Magna concentrators. (The Bonneville concentrator is a crushing and grinding unit and does not have its own flotation plant). I. Historical Development Progress through change has been the key to the successful operation of the Utah Copper Division for more than 70 years. As the original low-grade copper operation, the pressures to remain competitive and profitable have dictated the timing and extent of each change. Much of the change has occurred through technological and economic advancements in the area of ore concentration. The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation had its origin June 4, 1903, when the Utah Copper Company was organized. The initial mill of 300 tpd (tons per day) capacity was built at Copperton a few miles below the present Bingham Canyon mine site. From 1904 to 1910, the Copperton mill was expanded to a capacity of 1,000 tpd, and all of the known apparatus for gravity concentration were evaluated.

Part of the ground control research at the U.S. Bureau of Mines is involved with improving ground control data collection and analysis methods. A geographic information system (GIs) is being used within this research effort to standardize the data collected and provide a common graphical and tabular format and analysis system for researchers to access information on underground coal mines. In addition, GIS's can perform relational analyses on multiple map and tabular data sets which are not possible through map-creation or CAD packages or through data bases alone. In addition to standardizing ground control analyses, there is an increasing need for rapid analysis of ground control data in connection with increasing production rates at longwall mines. The examination of a large number of interrelated parameters and their impact on short-term mine safety and productivity under the time constraints imposed by rapid production requires computer-aided techniques. A GIs provides the means to quickly, quantitatively, and reproducibly evaluate mine-wide conditions. This overview of GI8 techniques for mine data integration and analysis, using a mine in Colorado as an example site, will cover the input of data into a GIs, including mine-wide monitoring system data and general data such as roof control plans and geology. The methods to geographically reference these data sets and retrieve and combine them also will be covered. Automation of such processes briefly will be reviewed to allow future users to automate their mine data analyses.

"It has been recently suggested that the exceptionally high antitumor and antibacterial activity of natural fredericamycin A (FMA) is related to its ability to spontaneously generate the superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (""OH) radicals in aerobic solutions [Hilton, B. D., Misra, R., & Zweier, J. L. (1986) Biochemistry 25, 5533]. With a view to understand the mechanistic details, attempts were made to reproduce earlier electron spin resonance (ESR) evidence for the oxygenated free radical formation in well-aerated solutions of natural FMA in dimethyl sulfoxide and dilute H 20 2• Little or no evidence was obtained for the formation of the 0 2- and methoxy (""OCH3) radicals, while the detected formation of the 'OH and methyl ('CH3) radicals was attributable largely to mechanisms not involving FMA. These results thus reopen the T question regarding the mechanism of its exceptionally high tumoricidal-bacteriocidal activity. This paper reports on an electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated free radicals in solutions of natural fredericamycin A (abbreviated as FMA) which has recently been reported to be a highly potent anti¬tumor antibiotic (Pandey et al., 1981; Warnick-Pickle et al., 1981). The impetus for this undertaking was provided by recent reports (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) suggesting that the strong tumoricidal activity with high therapeutic—toxic index of FMA was related to its ability for the spontaneous generation of superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals. For example, the suggested mechanism for the formation of 02- by FMA was (Hilton et al., 1986)FMA-OH + O2 FMA-O + H+ + 02-Here FMA—OH is simply the FMA molecule emphasizing the —OH moiety which becomes FMA-O, the free radical rep¬resenting the oxidized form of the drug. While some other highly effective anticancer drugs in current clinical application, such as bleomycin, are also thought to exert their antitumor effects via the formation of reactive drug-based or oxygenated free radicals (Carmichael et al., 1985; Gianni et al., 1983), FMA was considered unique in that only in this case the free radical formation was thought to be spontaneous, rather than through a metal- or an enzyme-activated process (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986). Thus it was suggested (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) that FMA could be the forerunner of a new class of anticancer drugs. However, we noted that while the hypothesis seemed plausible, the reported ESR spectral evidence appeared to be ambiguous. Because of the high significance of the earlier conclusions (Stinson, 1986), we undertook a systematic ESR study of the radical formation in FMA solutions, and as discussed below, our conclusions disagree with those reported earlier."

It has been shown that magnesium-based metal hydrides such as Mg2Ni could be synthesized by high energy mechanical alloying. This process creates a nanocrystalline alloy that has enhanced hydrogen sorption properties due to the high density of defects and grain boundaries. Unfortunately, this process also requires a long synthesis time (up to 100 hours in some cases). In order lo reduce processing time and cost of synthesis, we have investigated the effect of milling at elevated temperature under an inert atmosphere. Milling at high temperature improves interdiffusion of the elements and reduces the number of structural defects such as vacancies, dislocations and internal strain. It was found that by milling elemental powders at 200°C. a complete synthesis of Mg2Ni could be achieved in 8 hours. This synthesis time is roughly an order of magnitude lower than that of the process conducted at room temperature. The hydrogen sorption kinetics and capacity of this material are comparable to Mg2Ni synthesized at room temperature.

The kinetics of chlorination of titanium-bearing raw materials has been investigated. For comparison purposes pellets of controlled macro-porosity, made of analytical grade TiO2 and anatase concentrate (Brazil) , have been exposed to different combinations of gas composition - CO, CO2, C12 -, gas flowrate and temperature. A thermogravimetric technique and an adapted grain model have been used in order to assess the influence of the several experimental parameters upon the chlorination behavior.

As the 2011 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2011 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 330. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a professional society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2011 Transactions is the second Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It appears solely in electronic format. The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which will better serve the mining community. Based on the feedback from the 2010 Transactions in e-book format, I believe that the transition to the all-digital format was the proper decision. The 2011 Transactions contain some of the most interesting research from the past year, including a 10-year profile of roof and rib fall trends from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a new cross-disciplinary application of the tools of epidemiology to assess and mitigate risk in coal mines . This 2011 Transactions comprise of a total of 82 technical papers (626 pages including index), including all 19 papers published in 2011 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 63) and all 32 papers published in 2011 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 28). Additionally, this volume contains 31 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 82 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2011 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

The type of inclusions with different sizes in as-cast low carbon steel strip which is deoxidized by Si–Mn has been characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM observation and analysis suggested that the type of inclusions larger than 1 μm is manganese silicate. TEM analysis was carried out to investigate the composition and structure of nano-inclusions. Inclusions with diameter about 100 nm are manganese silicate, MnS–Si(Mn)Ox complex particles and isolated cubic Al2O3. Furthermore, HREM observations have revealed that there were two kinds of ultrafine particles in size range of 5–10 nm. One is spherical monoclinic Cu2S; the other is silicon-iron oxide particles with morphology of long strip. In addition, some thermodynamic calculations were performed to explain the corresponding relation between the type of inclusions and their size.

The effects of minor constituents on the malleability of nickel alloys are described. These effects are related to the atomic diameter, valence, and position on the Periodic Table. The basic methods for removal or neutralization of deleterious elements are then reviewed. Finally, practical methods for melting nickel alloys are described in detail and related to minor constituent control. L HE first malleable nickel was produced by Fleit-man in about 1870 by the addition of manganese and magnesium to the molten metal to counteract the harmful effects of sulfur. Merica and Waltenbergl explained the mechanism by which these elements accomplished the desired result. They showed that sulfur in concentrations in excess of about 0.005 pct produced films of a brittle low melting eutectic of nickel-nickel sulfide which completely surrounded the grains. When manganese was added to molten nickel it reacted with the sulfur to form manganese sulfide which precipitated as widely scattered globules in the grain boundaries. The further addition of small amounts of magnesium converted the sulfur to a very stable sulfide of magnesium which was relatively insoluble in both the liauid and solid states and therefore occurred as finely divided particles within the grains where it had relatively little detrimental effect upon the malleability of nickel or its alloys. The practice of treating nickel with manganese and magnesium came to be called "deoxidation" and was employed without appreciable modification for the commercial production of wrought nickel and high nickel alloys (in this paper—50 pct or more nickel) until about 1930 even though the results were never entirely satisfactory. At that time a more extensive study was made of the effects of minor constituents on malleability and metallurgical quality. The results, small portions of which have been published,2-4 are presented here with other pertinent data. EFFECTS OF MINOR CONSTITUENTS UPON NICKEL Systematic additions were made of 0.5 pct or less of each of most of the elements of the periodic ta- ble. It was established in this study that some minor constituents other than manganese and magnesium were extremely influential. The malleability, as evaluated by the reduction of area in tension tests, depended roughly on temperature as shown in Fig. 1. Four temperature zones are of interest; the cold malleable zone (up to about 1000° F), the red short zone from roughly 1000° to 1500' F, the hot malleable zone around 2000° F and the incipient melting zone. Most of the malleability problems are associated with the red short zone and the discussion will concern this mainly. "The tax reform process marches on. The December 16, 1987 measures tabled by Finance Minister Michael Wilson represent one more step toward the objective of total reform of Canada's income and sales taxes. While the income tax changes are taking shape, much work still needs to be done on the sales tax side of the coin.IntroductionOn December 16, 1987 Finance Minister Michael Wilson tabled measures to implement the changes to Canada's income tax system that were proposed in the June 18, 1987 White Paper on Tax Reform. The measures were set out in a Notice of Ways and Means Motion; draft legislation relating to preferred shares, research and development expenditures; and draft regulations regarding capital cost allowance, certified films, flow-through shares, and the resource sector. The reaction of the government to the recommendations made by the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee Report on Tax Reform (the Blenkarn Committee), the Report of the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce and through consultations with interested groups and organizations, business, labour and individual Canadians is set out in a booklet of supplementary information.The basic features of the reformed income tax system set out in the White Paper remain. However, a number of significant changes have been incorporated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion and other material. The following comments address those area s where changes have been made to the original White Paper proposals."

Correlations were made on experimental data for four New Mexico ore series to determine relationships between ore grade and uranium extraction during leaching operations. Such relationships provide information needed to predict the long-range supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs. Results show that other ore constituents and gangue materials in addition to uranium grade influence uranium extraction. In general, tailing grades decrease and uranium extraction increases as both H2S04 and NaCl03 concentrations increase. Terminal emf and terminal pH also were studied. Similar trends appeared for all ores; however, specific combinations of results also were observed for individual ores and ore series. Experimental results indicate that uranium extractions are higher for lower uranium feed grades than predicted by other estimates. Three factors--uranium feed grade, H2SO4 concentration, and NaC103 concentration--were used to design factorial experiments for each ore series. Four additional feed assay factors--V205, Fe, C02, and CaO--were included in regression equations to account for some of the variation in data. The three factorial factors are represented in the regression equations by linear and exponential terms of the form D i'1*G i + Di,2 *e Di, 3*Gi. The four additional assay factors are represented by linear and squared terms of the form Di,*Gi + Di,2*eDi3*Gi. where the Di, ,J are coefficients, the Gi are factors, and the symbol * represents multiplication in computer notation. The interactions of the factors are represented by products of the nonlinear terms for all pairs of the factors.

Aspen, the flourishing mountain- and mining-town of Pitkin county, Colorado, is located in the valley of the Roaring Fork, 11 miles above Glenwood springs, where that stream empties its waters into Grand river, a tributary of the Colorado. The Roaring Fork heads on the western slope of the Sawatch range near Grizzly peak, and runs in a general northwesterly direction to its junction with the Grand river. Of its numerous tributaries, Castle creek joins it just below the town of Aspen, the town being built on an extensive flat hounded on the northeast by the Roaring Fork and on the west by Castle creek. The latter heads at the junction of the Sawatch and the Elk mountains and flows northward between the two chains, until it empties into Roaring Fork. Opposite the town of Aspen, Hunter creek, coming westward from the western slope of Mount Massive, joins the Roaring Fork. About a mile north of Aspen, the bed of Hunter creek is at least 300 feet higher than that of the Roaring Fork at Aspen. Hunter creek forms thus, at its mouth, one of the best water-powers in Colorado. A portion of it is now utilized for electric lighting in Aspen, while in the near future, the whole of this magnificent natural power will be applied, through electric transmission, for hoisting, pumping and ventilating at different mines of the district. The mountain opposite the town of Aspen, on the east side of Hunter creek (which near its mouth flows southerly), is called Smuggler mountain, from the famous mine at the foot of it. On the other, or western, side of Hunter's creek (see map, Fig. I), a higher mountain rises, on the slope of which the regular dip of the Triassie or Upper Carboniferous red sandstone strata, alternating with white layers of the same rock, can be clearly seen from town.
