This paper discusses recent Federal Bureau of Mines research on the selective flocculation of various minerals with insoluble crosslinked starch xanthate (ISX). ISX is insoluble, has a shelf life of over a year when kept cold, and has a higher molecular weight due to cross linking than the soluble noncrosslinked starch xanthate used in previous flocculation studies on nonsulfide minerals. ISX readily flocculates a number of sulfide mineral fines but not silicious gangue. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are strongly dependent on pH, with the pH dependence differing for each mineral. Bornite has been selectively flocculated from bornite-quartz mixtures, and the bornite-containing flocs were separated from the unflocculated quartz using decantation and washing procedures.

"Surface crown pillars are important Canadian,mining structures. Mines operating in the Canadian Shield usually have several, forming a first line of protection from surface elements.Detailed technical information from twenty-four Canadian hard rock mines show that the deposits dip steeply and are generally either single or multiple veins. Considerable overburden usually cap the deposits. The rock mass is often altered and intersected by important discontinuities.The designs for these types of pillars lack basic data and are based on experience rather than a scientific approach. Regardless of the competence of the rock mass, the surface crown-pillar thickness to width ratios (an unscientific design tool used by the industry) are usually less than five. Rock bolting is, in almost every case, used as a support measure. However, there are many openings neither backfilled nor monitored.The characteristics of openings with surface crown pillars are also examined."

It is a curious fact that while in our Transactions there are papers dealing with mining-districts in all parts of the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, there is not one which describes the mining possibilities of Nicaragua, our near neighbor. To be most interested in distant objects, like the moon, and to neglect what lies at our feet, appears to be a trait of human nature. The neglect of Nicaragua is not confined to the American Institute of Mining Engineers. In no other transactions am I able to find papers dealing with mining in Nicaragua, some parts of which are as much in need of discovery and research as the North Pole. I hope this paper will be the precursor of many others to be printed in our Transaclions, dealing not only with the miniilg possibilities of Nicaragua, but with the whole of Central America, where there are vast areas a,waiting skill and capital for their development. Much of this capital and skill should come from the United States in the future, although it is probable that European capitalists, when they appreciate fully the possibilities, will investigate more and more the mining-resources of Nicaragua and ot'her Central American republics. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of Nicaragua showing the principal mining-districts. 11. History. Mining in Nicaragua did not begin yesterday. It was commenced by civilized man when the Spanish conquerors pene-' trated into the interior and forced the natives to procure the precious metal for them. It is strange that the Spaniards did not find more gold, and work on a scale as extensive as in Colombia and other parts of South America. Probably in Nicaragua the Indians covered up most of the rich prospects

The concept of limit burning velocities is being used to formulate a quantitative theory of flammability limits. Competing and complicating processes dissipate power from a combustion wave and quench propagation at some characteristically low limit velocity. Two earlier reports dealt with process (a), natural convection (RI 8127); and with process (b), conductive-convective wall losses (RI 8469). This report considers process (c), radiative losses, and process (d), selective diffusional demixing. The limit burning velocity for radiative losses is [(SU)c ~ e cp] It is normally not a significant process for premixed gas flames; however, for laminar flame propagation in a gravity-free environment, it is the only loss process present. Accordingly, limit velocities at zero gravity should be much lower than on earth, and premixed gases should be flammable over wider composition ranges. For highly emissive dusts, soot, or ash-forming flames, radiative losses are significant even under normal gravity conditions. Selective diffusional demixing is a complication that manifests itself in the form of cellular flame structures and wide gaps in composition between upward and downward propagation limits. It induces a burning velocity shift (?Su)d, causing the flame to behave as though it were richer or leaner than its initial composition, depending on whether the fuel or the oxidizer mole¬cule has the higher diffusivity. A simple pertubation analysis shows that the process generates stable cellular flames whenever [dsu] > 0, where ci is the concentration of the reactant with the higher diffusivity. The same analysis indicates that at the opposite stoichiometry, where [dcu] < 0, laminar structures are stabilized. A simple formula for the diameter of cellular flames is derived, which predicts that dcell should vary inversely with the product of the diffusivity difference Di -DJ, and the burning velocity slope [dc ]. Those predictions are in good agreement with the available data. Buoyancy forces for upward propagation induce flame front curvature, and hence buoyancy and selective diffusion are mutually supportive in upward propagation. Thus large gaps in composition between upward and downward limits are present in those composition domains where cellular flames are stable.

The self-diffusion coefficient D, for a surface near the (100) plane in copper was determined by means of the Mullins theory of thermal grooving, and was found to obey the Arrhenius relationship, and Do = 6.5 x 10&apos; sq cm per sec. Suppression of surface diffusion by chemisorbed impurities encounters difliculties as a satisfactory explanation for the large Q, and Do. Instead, a model is presented which indicates that Q,, as determined by a mass-transport technique, may involve both the energy needed to form an adsorbed atom from a ledge in the surface as well as that for the movement of the adsorbed atom.; LITERATURE reviews1-3 indicate that the mechanism of self-diffusion on metal surfaces is not clearly understood. The lack of experimental data on the temperature variation of the surface self-diffusion coefficient DJ has contributed greatly to this situation. Radioactive tracer techniques4-rn have been used to measure Ds, but for many years only Nicker-son and Parker8 had determined (for polycrystalline silver) an activation energy B, and a frequency factor Do for the surface self-diffusion process. Even in this case, a mechanism could not be clearly inferred because it was suspeted7 that a contribution from volume diffusion was not taken into account by the investigators. Some later work by Li and parkere on polycrystalline gold, in which they obtained essentially the same results as for silver and in which volume diffusion could be accounted for, seems to invalidate this criticism. In 1957, Mullins10&apos;11 developed the theory for the thermal grooving process. This advance has opened a new and promising technique for measuring the surface self-diffusion coefficient Ds. Recognizing that a thermal groove may form by several different mass transport processes, Mullins first consideredlo the cases where a) the groove forms by evaporation and condensation or b) by diffusion along the groove surface, in either case, in a system where a metal surface is in contact with only its dilute vapor phase. In a later paper," he extended the treatment to cases where the groove forms by volume diffusion into c) the solid phase or d) by mass transport through a passive gaseous phase at 1 atm pressure. &apos;IM existing predictive methods were chosen for evaluation; an influence function (Bals Theory) and a profile function (hyperbolic). These ere applied to several field measured subsidence profiles over United States coal mines. The effect of homogeneous versus non-homogeneous overburden on surface subsidence is demonstrated and the utilization of Bals Theory as a subsidence predictive method for both types of overburden is examined. The major factor affecting subsidence profile characteristics is the migration of the inflection point toward the centerline of the longwall panel. A computer program was written to aid in the analysis.

The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 14-39, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the "Area Reports: International" volume of the "Minerals Yearbook" and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-88 editions. In this year&apos;s edition, for the first time, a column has been added to each of these tables providing a 5 year average for 1985-89, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continues to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1989. With the inclusion of silver and uranium oxide in the 1988 edition of this chapter, this group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from 1st to 19th in 1983 in terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93% of the estimated value of world crude mineral of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key down-stream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil are included because of their significance as products.

It is a difficult task to find enriched soft iron ore deposits in the central part of the Labrador Trough, New Quebec, Canada, when the areas investigated are covered by glacial drift. A qualitative interpretation of either a combined gravity-magnetic-seismic-resistivity survey or gravity-magnetic-seismic or gravity-magnetic-resistivity survey permits (with a low probability level) the detection of iron formations and ore zones as well as their delineation from most of the country rocks. This is possible because most of the altered iron formation underwent a slight increase in density through enrichment and because the accompanying geochemical alteration changed their magnetic properties. In order to increase the chances of success in finding ore bodies when using geophysical methods, different types of correlation were done for many deposits. These are: I) A quantitative correlation of the residual gravity anomaly intensities with the specific gravity, the iron content, the silica content, the porosity factor, and the dimensions of the underlying ore bodies. 2) A quantitative correlation of the ground magnetic intensity relative to a reference lithologic unit with the percentage of Fe.,O, recovery and with the volume ferromagnetic susceptibility. A few discoveries already have been made with this method. The details of the location, the description of the geology, and the history of previous geophysical surveys and their qualitative interpretation have already been given.&apos;, &apos; A very brief paragraph describing the regional and local geology is necessary in order to facilitate the understanding of this paper. The sedimentary iron formations of the Labrador Trough consist of a 700-mile geosynclinal segment composed of tightly folded and faulted Proterozoic sediments, volcanics, and intrusives that are rich in mineral deposits. The complex sequence rests unconformably on the basement of Archean granitic gneisses. The direct-shipping iron deposits are scattered along a northwest-trending strip, 5 to 10 miles wide and some 60 miles long in the facies rich in iron oxides and preferentially in localities where the original sedimentary environment favorized the deposition of a large concentration of magnetite associated with chert by physicochemical processes, e.g., oxidation-reduction potential, pH, temperature, pressure. Once leached of its silica and/or iron carbonate content and enriched with secondary a-hematite (occasionally goethite), this original magnetite associated with some primary hematite makes the blue direct-shipping ore which constitutes the important ore reserves in this mining district.

THE determination of suitable and safe annealing temperatures is one of the most important problems arising in the operation of a copper rolling mill. Certain of the larger mills have worked this problem out for themselves and in these mills the operation has become more or less standardized. In some of the mills pyrometers are used to measure the temperature of the annealing furnaces and careful watch is kept to see that overheating does not take place. In a considerable number of the mills, however, dependence is placed entirely on the judgment of the operator. The almost total lack of literature bearing on this subject seems sufficient warrant for the publication of this paper. The discussion of this subject naturally divides itself into two parts: (1) The effect of annealing temperature on physical properties; and (2) changes in the microstructure of refined copper due to cold rolling and annealing. I. THE EFFECT OF ANNEALING TEMPERATURE ON PHYSICAL PROPERTIES For the purpose of investigating this phase of the subject six test bars were selected, varying in oxygen content between the limits of 0.036 and 0.070 per cent. THE purpose of this paper is to present a brief sketch of the development of this hindered-settling classifier, but primarily to show the actual results obtained in practice with the classifier working on the Butte copper ores at the Boston & Montana Concentrator, at Great Falls and the Washoe Concentrator at Anaconda. The writer has endeavored to be as brief as possible, giving only the essential figures showing the efficiency of the classifier and leaving considerable interesting information to be derived by the reader from the statistics given. The paper deals with the practical work of the classifier under the following heads: 1. Desliming 4.0-mm. primary feed, overflow from 0.07 to 0.0 mm. 2. Desliming 1.25-mm. secondary feed, overflow from 0.07 to 0.0 nun. 3. Desliming Huntington Mill discharge, overflow from 0.07 to 0.0 mm. 4. Classifying 2.5-mm. deslimed secondary feed, overflow from 1.00 to 0.07 mm. 5. Classifying 2.5-mm. deslimed primary feed, overflow from 0.75 to 0.07 mm. 6. PENG, WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY] Immediately after coal extraction, the pressure that causes the movement of the surrounding strata is called mine pressure. Through the strata movement, certain features such as supports taking load arise. This is called "manifestation of mine pressure". The existence of mine pressure is ab¬solute whereas its manifestation is relative and conditional. The visible movement of the surrounding strata occurs only when the applied pressure exceeds the plastic breaking strength. Me support begins to take load only when it offers resistance to the strata movement. The key to investigating mine pressure and its control hinges on understanding the rules and conditions for the manifestation of mine pressure. Since the face moves continuously, the mine pressure and its manifestations are also constantly changing. &apos;Therefore, it should not only emphasize to obtain its instantaneous magnitude, but more importantly the rules of development changes and their relations to the movement of overlying strata. Once this is resolved, one can estimate the movement of the overlying strata through mani¬festation of mine pressure and predict the time and magnitude of incoming roof weighting. Consequently the location and timing of rib excavation can be correctly selected and thus solve several major problems in the design of mining operation.

The engineering of a support system is driven largely by economics. The goal is to provide effective support at minimal cost. For this reason, wood has been extensively used as a support material for centuries. The cost of timber for mining applications has risen by more than 50% in the past 5 years and is likely to continue to increase as the supply diminishes and further environmental restrictions are placed on timber harvesting. The increased cost and lack of high strength wood in the Western United States has provided incentives to improve the utilization of wood and to develop alternative support materials. This U.S. Bureau of Mines&apos; (USBM) report discusses the basic engineering requirements for the application of various materials for supplemental roof support construction and provides an overview of support systems that use materials other than wood. A comparison of support performance and cost for various material constructions is made to assist the mine operator in support selection. The scope of materials discussed in the report include: (1) conventional mine timber loaded perpendicular to the grain, (2) parallel to the grain timber loading, (3) steel fiber reinforced and air entrained concrete, (4) steel, (5) granular fill materials, and (6) combinations of these as composite support structures. The range of support systems analyzed include wood and concrete cribs, concrete columns and props, steel beams, friction props, and several novel support concepts.

Between 1977 and 1984, No. 26 Colliery, at Glace Bay in the Sydney Coalfield, suffered from a series of 37 rock/gas outbursts. These events were characterized by the complete pulverization of a sandstone which was propelled into the mine roadway and an associated release of methane gas. The events began to appear at a depth of 700 m and increased in intensity and damage to the excavation as the mining depth increased. At the time of the closure of No. 26 Colliery (as a result of an unrelated fire), these outbursts were the subject of intensive investigation. Although No. 26 is now closed, there is concern that similar events could appear at Phalen Colliery where current development work is proceeding at a depth close to the 700 m threshold. Past investigations into rock/gas outbursts included studies of in situ stresses, the simulation of outburst events in the laboratory, investigations into the potential for destressing an& degassing of problem sandstone and the development of numerical models to assist in the design of openings in outburst prone ground. However, despite this work, methods of predicting outburst conditions are presently limited to examination of probe hole cores for core discing, and methods of working under such conditions are limited to boring and firing and using volley firing techniques to initiate any outbursts while workers are safely out of the heading. During this investigation of worldwide occurrences of this phenomena, literature obtained suggested that outbursts might generate microseismic precursors. An intrinsically safe (IS) microseismic monitoring system was designed and developed based on CANMET&apos;s rockburst monitoring system currently in use in hardrock mines, and installed in a development roadway at the deepest extent of the Phalen Colliery. The system will record microseismic activity associated with development work to try to identify characteristic precursors of outburst-prone conditions. This paper describes the steps taken to identify a microseismic system suitable for use at Phalen colliery, of which part of the requirement was that it be IS and approved for use in the Sydney Coalfield. The modifications to the selected system are described, along with its capabilities and the preliminary results of its performance over the first few months of use.

INTRODUCTION Before an understandable discussion concerning coal-dewatering processes can be initiated, it is necessary to define some terms of usage. The many different meanings and interpretations of terms preclude development of standard definitions so that the terms which are defined in this chapter should be regarded mainly as working terms intended to facilitate communication. A coal slurry &apos; might be defined as a watery suspension carrying particles of fine coal and other assorted material ranging upward in size from the finest clay particles. Some particles may be in the colloidal sue range and exhibit characteristics of suspended colloids. The dilution of the system generally is such that it is in a condition of independent particle subsidence. In some coal mining areas a slurry is regarded as a suspension of fine coal and other materials having a dilution that cannot be economically dewatered by filtration. A coal slime may be regarded as a slurry containing particles of such size range that 50 per cent or more (by weight) will pass a 200-mesh sieve. Slime suspensions generally are difficult to handle without special treatment in conventional sedimentation equipment. A coal sludge is defined as a slurry that has been partly dewatered by sedimentation usually to a thick or viscous consistency where further dewatering can be most readily facilitated by filtration. Culm and silt are terms characteristic of coal-preparation practice which should be defined. In anthracite terminology, culm is the generally coarse residue or waste accumulation of coal, bone and rock from preparation plants most of which are no longer functional. Culm has a wide range of sizes, some rather coarse, and except to differentiate it from silt, the term is of limited interest in this discussion. In anthracite terminology, silt is the accumulation of waste fine coal, bone and slate settled out from preparation plant water in excavated basins. Silt is generally made up of particles ranging in size from 3/32-in. round-opening screen to the very finest sues. Silt is also referred to at times as sludge, fines, slush, and mud and is the partly dewatered derivative of what has been previously defined as slurry. In the terminology of the bituminous coal producing areas, the word culm commonly corresponds to slurry or slime, depending upon the size distribution of the suspended solids. Editor&apos;s Note: Because of the numerous and varied contributions of the associate authors of this chapter, the text does not differentiate between sections authored by each individual as is the case in most chapters of this book.

"The concept of employing a project management team to coordinate all aspects of the construction of a new resource development has gained wide acceptance. This team can be formed from within the staff of large mining companies or contracted from major engineering firms and consultants. The mandate of the project managers usually terminates on successful startup of the operation. For frontier mineral developments in the Canadian Arctic or in the developing countries, startup and the initial year of operation represents the period in which the project is most vulnerable to technical, political and managerial problems. A complete change of the management team or the retention of the construction project managers and the resulting cost combined with the breakdown of organizational accountability within the operating staff .are unnecessary management problems.Independent project management services provide the commitment necessary to sustain the continuity of management through all project phases. Efficiency and the ability to make decisions quickly are characteristics of the many successful small mining companies. These qualities are necessary in the project management group, which will be responsible for up to 90% of the preproduction costs.Continuous project management in the construction and operational phases of a mineral development are common in the iron ore industry, but remain anomalous in the base metal, energy mineral and industrial mineral fields.The Nanisivik project on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic is used to illustrate the advantages of total project management through construction and operation.Total project management has further potential for foreign interests and financial and utility organizations desirous of participating in the Canadian mining industry, but with no direct involvement in the construction or operating management. Participation agreements in the operating phase of a project can be negotiated to have management fees related to both the production and the profits of the enterprise."

In an effort to promote sustainability in the construction industry, the natural decorative stones that cover large external areas of buildings may be replaced with artificial stones. In this paper the physical and mechanical properties of artificial decorative stones are presented and are critically compared with corresponding natural stones. To test suitability for various applications, artificial stone specimens were subjected to weathering testing (freezing-thaw cycles in a climatic chamber). Mechanical characterization of these specimens was based on uniaxial compressive testing as well as non-destructive ultrasonic testing. Preliminary results show that artificial stones can replace natural stones, thus creating a sustainable development option for the construction industry.

Longwall developments in the UK have historically consisted of single entry gate roads. Adjacent developments were separated from existing panels by large barrier pillars (designed of sufficient width to get away from the longwall abutments of the previous panel) or by small barriers driven in the shadow, or de-stressed zone, of the previous panel. Some 2nd panel tailgates were also driven skin to skin leaving no coal barrier between the newly driven entry and the heavily supported existing gateroad. With the developement and wide acceptance of fully bolted entries and the pressure to reduce production costs, alternatives to single entry drivage, particularly yield pillar developments, were examined. Through the Rock Mechanics Branch of British Coal, a cooperative study was begun with Jim Walter Resources, Inc., USA, (JWR) to look at the yield pillar alternative in detail. This study was to determine the feasibility of utilizing yield pillars in the UK and to determine, through monitoring, the possibility of reducing stable pillar widths at JWR. The study has included extensive monitoring of the yield-stable-yield pillar system at JWR No. 7 Mine and an underground trial of a two entry yield pillar test area at Welbeck Colliery in the UK. This paper describes results from the JWR study and the subsequent results of the first advancing yield pillar development in the UK at Welbeck Colliery.

"All ten Canadian provinces have now tabled their 1981 /82 budgets . Only the provinces of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia made more than minor modifications to their tax structures, with both Ontario and Quebec imposing major tax increases. In the past year, the federal budget was also released in the spring. Not so this year: we have that to look forward to in the fall!This month, Tax Notes presents a brief summary of the more significant tax changes introduced at the provinciallevels in the last months.Summary of provincial tax rate changesThe tax changes in this year&apos;s provincial budgets were both up and down- but there were far more tax increases than tax cuts.At the corporate tax level, two provinces, New Brunswick and British Columbia, increased their general corporate income tax rate; the former by two percentage points and the latter by one percentage point. Quebec, rather unexpectedly, sharply cut its corporate tax rate on business income, but increased some of its other business taxes at the same time. British Columbia reduced its corporate tax rate on small business income by two percentage points and Saskatchewan by one percentage point."

The Romanian mining industry, especially salt mining, is going through a restructuring phase taking into account the Environment Acquis of the European Union1. In order to preserve the centuries-old salt mines and to develop new ones, in the same salt rock deposit, the long term stability assessment of the saline complex is very important. This case study refers to the Praid salt mine, which includes old salt mines, with impressive sizes, located above the new mines, with activity in progress, in order to provide the means and solutions for efficient conservation and sustainable exploitation for the salt resources. The DKRControl method and FLAC 3D code were used in order to assess the confidence level for the computed prediction of the stability of the salt mine complex salt.

The famous Homestake gold mine in Lead, SD. closed recently alter 125 years of operation. However, the mine may receive a new lease on life as a National Underground Science Laboratory (NUSL) supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and dedicated to high-energy physics experiments involving neutrinos. These experiments require the construction of many large underground chambers tells of meters wide at depths of over 21 18 m. Construction of such large openings at such extreme depths has few precedents m civil-engineering-type construction. The Spokane Research Laboratory has a long history of ground control research at the Homestake Mine and has supported NSF and the physics community in their efforts to develop a NUSL at I Homestake or other suitable location. This paper will summarize underground science and describe proposed underground science laboratories ill the United States, in particular tile proposed NUSL at Homestake. Next, the paper describes an empirical design approach using the Q system of rock mass classification for these large Openings. .M initial site investigation that produced three good case histories is described. The actual support system used at the three sites agrees well with support recommendations from current support design charts, giving credibility to estimates of the classification parameters and Q. Feasibility of, and support requirements for, 25-, 50-, and 100-m spans arc estimated in the anticipated rock mass. This analysis indicates that 25- and 50-m spans are probably feasible, but a stable 100-nn span may be unachievable. The empirical predictions are then compared to detailed numerical analyses. The paper concludes with preliminary support recommendations and necessary site investigations needed to make a proposed NUSL a successful reality. These studies have been important input to NSF for their decisions on the technical feasibility of developing the proposed NUSL.
