"Echo Bay's Lupin Operation has produced more than 2.15 million ounces of gold since start-up in 1982. The mining method used to the£ present time has been longhole open stoping using trackless equipment. Because direct measurement of the open stopes has not been possible until recently determining the exact quantity of unplanned dilution in previously mined stopes has not been possible. Estimates of dilution hove been mode using comparisons between production tons and grades against ore reserve tons and grades.This paper discusses tracking of grade and tonnage measurements from reserve estimation through production. The development of increasingly more sophisticated and powerful retreat longwall equipment has led to ever wider and longer panels. To maximize gateroad development efficiency, provide for effective face recovery, andlor reduce ventilation pressures, entries are cut across longwall panels in advance of longwall retreat mining. These entries must be supported to prevent falls of immediate roof in advance of the face. Recently, cut through entries and predriven recovery room entries have been supported with various combinations of roof bolts and passive support. The cost and relative success of these support systems has varied considerably. Eighty-Four Mining Company, Fosroc, and Sub-Technical have developed and implemented an efficient, yielding, multiple component, cement crib to support longwall panel cut through entries and pre-driven recovery rooms. The cutable crib consists of an inexpensive flyash cement pillar poured in a bag, within a temporary metal form. The form is moved to a subsequent cutable crib location after the initial hardening of the flyash pillar. The remaining entry height between the mine roof and the top of the flyash cement pillar is filled with a specially designed bag filled with Fosroc's Tekset cement formulation. The diameter of the pillar and thickness of the Tekset bag are designed to accommodate the anticipated front abutment loading and entry convergence.

LARGE deposits of titaniferous magnetite occur associated with anorthosite and gabbro in the Lake Sanford area, Essex County, New York. The ore, gabbro, and anorthosite show consanguineous relations. Anorthosite grades through gabbroic anorthosite into gabbro but is locally intruded by gabbro. Structural and petrographic evidence suggests that gabbro was differentiated from anorthosite by filter pressing. Field and laboratory study of ore occurrences indicates that an ore residuum concentrated in the gabbro through magmatic segregation by normal crystallization and flowage. Ore occurs as bands which grade into gabbro, and also as large masses which replace anorthosite. Ore in the gabbro is finer grained and richer in ilmenite than ore in anorthosite.

The rapid growth of highwall mining in the Appalachian coalfields has resulted in unique safety concerns. Due to the concentration of activity at the base of the highwall and the potentially destabilizing influence of the mining process, proper mine planning and continual monitoring of the ground conditions is essential to ensure a safe and productive operation. This will also help to minimize the need to recover equipment that has become entrapped underground, and the subsequent hazards associated with a recovery operation. Adequate geotechnical site investigation and rational design methods should enable mine planners to properly account for the site-specific conditions that influence web and abutment pillar, roof, floor, and highwall stability. This paper examines the growth of highwall mining, provides a general overview of the various safety concerns, and reviews the modes of highwall failure as they relate to a highwall mining operation. Gcotechnical considerations that should be taken into account before and throughout the mining operation are emphasized. The importance of closely examining and monitoring highwall conditions for subtle signs of highwall instability will be discussed.

A computerised influence function approach to subsidence and horizontal displacement prediction is described, with particular emphasis being placed on the applicability of the method to irregular- shaped mine workings. Based on previous work [1], this approach has been put for- ward for inclined seam situations. Examples of graphical output presenting surface subsidence contours, horizontal displacement vectors and principal strain vectors are given and their significance discussed in relation to current problems.

Longwall mining-induced abutment loads on the surrounding coal pillars can be grouped into two categories in terms of the relative position of the coal pillars and the longwall face. They are the front and side abutment loads. Even though a lot of research and efforts have been made to study the nature and behavior of these longwall mining-induced abutment loads, their influence zones and magnitude are still not well defined and fully understood due to the complexity of geological conditions and the longwall muting-induced overburden strata movement. The uncertainty about the mining-induced abutment loads often forces consultants and mining engineers to employ a conservative approach in designing coal pillars and entry roof control plans. The problems with this approach are that: (a) it increases CM development¬longwall retreat footage ratio, (b) it decreases coal recovery, and (c) it increases !Ill' operating costs. However, a more liberal approach may create safety issues and result in loss of production. Therefore, the importance of accurately defining the influence zones and magnitude of the front and side abutment loads induced by longwall mining can never be over emphasized. The authors in this paper attempt to define the influence zones and discuss the magnitude of the longwall mining-induced abutment loads by analyzing the field data measured at RAG American Coal Company's longwall mines. In addition, the relationship between entry stability and the balance among roof/floor conditions, pillar design, and roof control plan is also briefly discussed.

The first successful bucket-elevator dredge to operate in California was put in comnlisvion wt Oroville in March, 1898. There had been numerous previous attempts at dredging, but noue of the earlier boats proved a success. The gold-miners in California earl3 conceived the idea of a machine to dig gravel from the beds and bars of auriferous streams that were inaccessible by the methods then employed, and it was only a few months after the discovery of gold in California that such a machine was Shipped around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco. Thij was, however, but the forerunner of many failures in gold-dredging, and was soon at the bottoni of the Sacramento river. During succeeding years many other unsuccessful attempts mere made, and it was not until 1897 that a dredge of the single-lift bucket-elevator type mas floated on the Yuba river. This dredge was built by the Risdon Iron Works for 12. H. Postlethwaite, and would probably have been a success if it had been operated on some of the rich Ororille ground

The solubilities of hydrogen in titanium and several of its alloys were determined at 600 to 1000°C and pressures of 0.05 to 10µ of mercury. Solubility increases with increasing beta phase in the alloys. Factors found to affect degassing rates are specimen size and presence of thick surficial oxide. Removal of hydrogen by heating in vacuum and in flowing inert atmospheres was studied. Practical curves predicting minimum degassing times are presented. THE presence of hydrogen in titanium and titanium alloys has detrimental effects on the mechanical properties of the metal.'"," The hydrogen content of commercial titanium is sometimes of the order of 200 ppm by weight' and varies with alloy composition. As a consequence, titanium and some titanium alloys as normally processed are sometimes not ductile unless treated to lower the hydrogen content. The best known hydrogen-removal treatment is heating the material in a vacuum. The rate of removal (degassing) at a give temperature determines the duration of the treatment required to attain a satisfactory low hydrogen level.

"Drilled shaft foundations are widely used for many types of structures, especially for highway bridges, high rise buildings, and costal structures. The lateral design considerations are crucial for those structures that are subjected to lateral thrust forces, winds, waves, and earthquakes. The p-y analysis is the most widely used method for the analysis and design of drilled shafts for lateral load applications in soils. However, existing p-y criteria were developed based on the lateral load tests on small diameter drilled shafts in soils. Although, a lot of lateral load tests have been conducted, there are a limited number of lateral load tests on large diameter drilled shafts embedded in clay. In this paper, a lateral load test on 2.44 m diameter fully instrumented drilled shafts in clay is presented. The site specific p-y curves are derived based on strain gage readings. The existing p-y curves are found to be much softer than the site specific p-y curves. Correspondingly, the deflection at the top of the test shaft under the maximum applied load is predicted to be eight times larger than the measured value using existing p-y criteria. A new p-y criterion is proposed in this paper. The proposed p-y criterion is proven to be able to capture the site specific p-y curves of the load test and to predict closely the deflections at the top of the test shaft. Net present value (NPV) has been the main criterion in mining project evaluation and production plan optimisation. It is a common practice in NPV calculations to take into account only the tangible cost items in the corporate accounting system. The costs incurred due to damage to the local ecosystem and environment are left out and treated as externalities. Such practice on the one hand underestimates the total cost of a mining operation and, on the other hand, ignores the difference in ecological/environmental impacts between different mine plan alternatives. This paper attempts to measure the ecological costs of mining and to incorporate such costs into the evaluation scheme in mining project evaluation and mine planning. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land (eg forest land, grazing land, crop land) damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from fossil fuel consumption. For the land areas (and their associated ecosystems) directly damaged by mining activities, the ecological costs are measured by the prevention and restoration costs, the lost values of eco-services of the damaged land, including bio-product production, soil erosion control, water run-off control, oxygen release, air pollutant absorption and formation of soil nutrients. The ecological cost of carbon emission from the energy consumption of a mining operation is measured by the cost of cultivating the equivalent forest land required to uptake the emitted carbon. A case study on a large-scale open pit mining project is presented to demonstrate the influence of ecological costs on the mine planning outcome.

A new approach is described for the calculation of the kinetics of metal/slag, metal/slag/gas, and metal/matte/slag/gas reactions. The algorithm assumes that equilibrium is achieved at the interface between phases, and uses an equilibrium solver (such as SOLGASMIX) to compute the equilibrium state at the interface at each time step during the reaction. For multiple phase systems a number of unit operations, representing the different phases and interfaces, must be connected together in a reasonalbly complex manner, and the METSIM software package has been utilized for this purpose. The new approach is superior to the SMAK software developed by the author and his co-workers over the past decade, for the reasons discussed in this paper.

A failed and stable Upper Group 2 chromitite pillar database was collected in 2007 as part of the PlatMine 1.2 pillar strength project. The database consisted of 177 pillars, of which 33 had failed. Most of the data were collected from various intermediate-depth mines near the town of Thabazimbi. Spans between rows of chain pillars were about 30 m. Pillar loads were estimated using pseudo-3D, elastic, boundary element modelling software. The pillar-load data were evaluated using a maximum likelihood regression analysis to determine strength parameters, following a similar approach to historically acceptable practice. The original formula was named the PlatMine Formula. This paper describes re-evaluations of the database, using a linear formula and several variations of the power formula. The formula providing the lowest standard deviation to the data in the database was considered the best representation of the pillars in the database. Through this rigorous process, a new formula for peak pillar strength was developed for Upper Group 2 chromitite pillars, which is unaffected by volume. The small standard deviation provided by this formula suggests a reliable relationship between strength and w/h ratio, in the w/h ratio range between 1.5 and 4.7. Accuracy, precision, and recall analysis confirmed the efficacy of this equation to the data in the database. Importantly, the new formula provided in the paper does not predict a significantly different strength to the current PlatMine formula, within the confines of the database.

The drill and blast method is the most prominent rock excavation method used in mining and civil engineering projects. The ground vibration is the most undesirable effect of the blasting and needs to be controlled. The blasts are designed so that ground vibration at nearby structures must remain under the prescribed limit. Various empirical blast vibration attenuation models have been presented to estimate the ground vibration for designing purposes. These models assume ground vibration as a function of distance and maximum charge per delay. United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) model is most commonly used for the blast design. However, the uncertainty associated with these models is seldom characterized, thus diminishing its reliability. The probabilistic Bayesian approach associated with the Monte Carlo method can easily quantify uncertainties associated with the model and its parameters. Thirty-three blast vibration observation data from a granite quarry in Kerala, India, is used to estimate the probability distribution of model parameters. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach is used for sampling 12,000 samples for obtaining the posterior distribution of parameters. The uncertainty associated with model parameters is quantified from the posterior distribution, and this is further used to estimate the credible and prediction limits of the model. The point estimate of the most optimum value of the parameter is estimated using maximum-aposteriori or MAP estimate. The model parameters are also obtained using the commonly used least-square error method, which is a maximum likelihood estimation or MLE approach. It has been observed that the accuracy of the model obtained using both MAP and MLE approach is almost equal. However, the MAP estimate as per Bayesian probabilistic analysis has the added advantage that it can estimate the uncertainty of parameters as well as the model, which is not possible using the MLE approach.

An improvement to cut-off grade optimisation theory based on geometallurgy has been completed. The improvement fundamentally consisted of taking into account mineralogical and textural characteristics instead of grades. These characteristics are related to the spatial variability of mineral abundance, association, particle size and liberation properties. Additionally, the improve- ment considered the spatial variability of mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties associated with mineralogy and texture. The enhanced optimisation enables estimation of the economic value of mining operations based on an optimum cut-off policy attributed to liberated and selected ore minerals.The enhanced optimisation was developed as an essential component of a joint cut-and-fill mining and mineral processing methodology based on mixed integer mathematical programming. The formulation considers static and dynamic modifying factors that vary over the projected life of mining. The objective function of the mathematical formulation consists of maximising the realistic expected economic value of concentrates or products of liberated and selected ore minerals, whilst minimises liberated and selected gangue minerals. The optimal solution is obtained when the objective function is subject to geological, mining, processing, marketing, smelting, refining, environmental and financial constraints. The methodology accesses geometallurgical multivariate resource models, which integrate the spatial variability of mineralogical and textural characteristics and mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties.The geometallurgical process concurrently optimises stope geometries, ore reserves, mining sequences, and mining and mineral processing production based on the enhanced cut-off of liberated and selected ore minerals. In addition, the process considers additive and non-additive transfer functions associated to mutually exclusive geometallurgical spatial domains. The transfer functions also take into consideration the blending of mineralogical and textural characteristics with mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties.This contribution presents an example of cut-off grade optimisation via mineralogical and textural characteristic, and liberation and selectivity processing parameter optimisation for a spatially variable orebody.

In underground mining operations, the over- riding issue has to be protection of worker health and safety. The employees underground, making a living in a dangerous occupation, know these are major issues. These men bargain their lives and health on the presumption that the operating management knows its business, and they, the underground employees, can pursue their occupation with the assurance that management has provided a safe and healthy ambient underground environment. When management assumes the mantle of protection of underground workers, it has to be positive that qualified engineers have designed the project, and that capable operating personnel are in charge and always available. Those persons with these responsibilities must be knowledgeable in the engineering and occupational health aspects of sine ventilation. The ultimate function of a mine ventilation system is to provide a comfortable, healthy and safe ambient environment for the underground workers. The attainment of these objectives has been complicated with the increased application of electrical equipment and diesel-powered mechanized mining equipment underground (discharging toxic diesel emissions); increased production rates with the attendant increased production of airborne dust; and mine development in increasingly hostile mineral formations containing combustible strata gases, radon gas emissions, along with high heat and humidity. In general, the modern mechanization of present mining operations has resulted in a sore complex set of problems for the engineer planning the underground ambient environment.
