Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) Century mine (Century) is a large open-cut mine in northwest Queensland approximately 2.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 240 m deep, with an ultimate pit depth of 320 m. In 2009, the mine experienced three failures which began as small failures, and progressively developed into significant multi-batter failures. The incidents were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and practical management to achieve positive outcomes for the mine. On the south wall of the mine, a series of batter-scale wedge failures occurred in December 2007. Analysis of structure orientations and design changes aimed to minimise the risk of failure extending over multiple batters, while accepting a risk of further small-scale failures. Design changes were constrained by a culturally sensitive area (CSA) located south of the wall. As mining progressed, shallow wedge failures developed over multiple batters and cracks were observed 60m back from the pit crest, indicating that a large-scale wedge failure was developing. Movement increased in January 2009 as a result of significant rainfall. After considering several design options, the area was stabilised by a cut-back of the wall. Two multi-batter failures also occurred on the north wall as mining progressed through a structurally complex area. Both north wall failures began as small failures that progressively developed, and required a redesign of the wall below as well as practical management of safety aspects. The complex structural geology was difficult to predict ahead of mining, and required geotechnical input into design changes as mining progressed. All three failures potentially had significant impact for ore recovery, and were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and operational management have resulted to achieve positive outcomes in a challenging mining environment.

For the purposes of this presentation, "refractory clay" is intended to include any clay suitable for refractory products and thus represents a description based on industrial application. Other common examples based on use would be white-ware clay, bleaching clay, paper clay, or cement clay. Most users and producers of refractories have specific quality requirements which determine the quality or type of clay that can be utilized. Many clays can however be interchanged or substituted in use by changing manufacturing processes or upgrading less desirable clays. U.S. Bureau of Mines publications (Ampian, 1985) categorize days into six groups. These are kaolin, fire clay, ball clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, and common clay. These are practical groupings based on clay production and usage in the United States. Among these groups bentonite, fuller's earth, and common clay are primarily composed of the minerals, smectite, illite, or chlorite, and are non-refractory. Kaolin, ball clay, and fire clay are commonly used in refractories and thus qualify as refractory clays.

"Several types of stratiform and epigenetic gold deposits have been found in New Brunswick, It is the purpose of this paper to describe and classify the epigenetic deposits and demonstrate their relationship to tectonic evolution. The stratiform deposits are mostly volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits that are described elsewhere (Davies et al., 1985).The auriferous epigenetic deposits include quartz-carbonate veins and stockworks, polymetallic veins, contact metasomatic, porphyry copper and volcanic breccia (epithermal) deposits. These epigenetic deposits are concentrated in major fault zones that define or are close to the boundaries of tectonostratigraphic terranes or terranes and cover sequences. The host rocks of the deposits were subjected to extensive crustal thickening resulting from thrusting and/or high angle reverse faulting.The gold deposits north of the Avalon Terrane occur indilatent structures related to mainly dextral wrench faulting that postdated the episode of crustal thickening. The deposits along the southern margin of the Avalon Terrane occur in structures related to late phase thrusting."

"Equity Silver Mines Limited, Canada's largest silver mine, has designed, built and operated a leach plant to reduce the levels of antimony and arsenic in its silver-gold-copper flotation concentrate. The orebody contained deleterious antimony and arsenic minerals in such proportions that the economic long-term sales contracts necessary to obtain project financing could not be procured. Construction of the leach plant therefore allowed development of the mine to proceed. Although the plant took some time to reach design throughput and product specifications, due to the complex and unique nature of the operation, these goals were successfully met and surpassed. This paper describes the physical plant and/or process technology modifications made to mold the main processes-concentrate leaching and filtering, autoclaving and filtration of by-products, and crystallization of salt cake-into an effective, economic operation.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited, a member of the Placer Development Group, owns and operates an open-pit silver mine and related facilities located 37 kilometres southeast of Houston in north-central British Columbia. "Most of the recent large discoveries of zinc, lead and silver in Western Canada are Paleozoic-aged stratiform deposits that occur within the limits of the tectonic sub-province of the Canadian Cordillera known as Selwyn Basin. Bounded on either side by coeval carbonate platforms. Selwyn Basin trends northwest for 1300 km from northeast British Columbia to Alaska. Paleozoic rocks of Selwyn Basin consist primarily of chert, shale and coarser-grained clastic sedimentary rocks with minor volcanic rocks.The Selwyn Basin deposits have few counterparts elsewhere in Canada, but have a close similarity in geological setting, mineralogy and morphology to well-known deposits such as McArthur (HYC) in Australia, Meggen and Rammelsberg in West Germany, and Sullivan in British Columbia. Recent studies of these deposits have led to an emerging, but now generally accepted, model of ore deposition in which stratabound zinc-lead-silver shale-hosted or ""sedimentary-exhalative"" (sedex) deposits are precipitated in active tectonic environments from metalliferous geothermal brines that rise to the sea floor along deep-seated fault zones. Although their mineralogy and ore metal zoning can be similar to that of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, most sedex deposits have only a weak genetic link with volcanism.Sedex mineralization in Selwyn Basin has been identified within three separate ages of shale or its metamorphosed equivalent. The lower Cambrian-age Anvil Camp in central Yukon Territory contains the only producing mine (Faro). Important lower Silurian-age zinc-lead mineralization is at Howards Pass along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border. Barite and zinc-lead-barite mineralization of upper Devonian age occurs across Selwyn Basin. Potentially economic deposits have been found at Macmillan Pass, along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border and in the Gataga District of northeastern British Columbia."

Froth flotation has been used industrially for many years to separate valuable minerals from their associated gangue constituents. Notwithstanding the significance of this process to the mineral industry, many of the engineering tools needed for the evaluation of the flotation process are still in a developmental stage. Traditionally, the evaluation of a flotation test on both the laboratory and industrial scale has been based largely on a rougher recovery value achieved at a sufficiently long time to give a "final" or "equilibrium" recovery value. The assumption of a time equivalency for a given recovery value between various flotation tests or between laboratory tests and industrial operation underlies this method of evaluation. Such an assumption implies that flotation is an "equilibrium engineering process" and that the time-rate recovery of material from the flotation cell is not affected by changes in the flotation system. It has been shown by Bushell (1) and by Klimpel (2) that the assumption of time equivalency between various flotation tests is unjustified. Consequently, better tools are needed for evaluating flotation test results, Because mathematical flotation models which incorporate both a recovery and a rate function can completely describe flotation time-recovery profiles, they can provide an excellent tool to evaluate flotation tests.

"General.The term mica is probably derived from the Latin ""micare"", meaning to shine or glitter, for the brilliant reflection from mica flakes in rocks has directed more than ordinary attention to this group of minerals. Mica includes a group of several minerals all characterized by a perfect basal cleavage, by virtue of which they may be split into exceedingly thin plates. The minerals are of very common occurrence in all countries, constituting about 4 per cent of the igneous rocks of the world The term ""isinglass"" is sometimes applied to glazing mica, but this is incorrect, for true isinglass is a soluble combustible material made from the air bladders of certain fish. As a constituent of granites and schists, mica is present as flakes too small for commercial use. Mica occurs also as small scales in many sandstones. When granites decompose, the quartz and the white mica are the most resistant to weathering, and so remain when the other constituents have been decomposed and carried away. A secondary white mica known as sericite is formed by the metamorphosis of clay-bearing rocks, and thus, in extremely fine-grained form it constitutes an important constituent of slates and related rocks. Some schists contain a high percentage of mica, but the presence of large amounts of quartz and other minerals has up to the present time rendered them useless as commercial sources of mica for grinding. It is possible, however, that certain mica or seri-cite schists which are composed almost wholly of mica with very little quartz may be utilized for ground mica if found in large enough entity. Considerable micais sometimes found mixed with the residual kaolin that results from decomposition of pegmatites, and in one locality at least it has been recovered as a by-product in a clay purification plant."

he removal of oxygen from titanium and zirconium is important for use in application because it significantly affects the mechanical and physical properties such as ductility and toughness. However, thermodynamic properties of oxygen in molten titanium and zirconium have not been clarified and the effective deoxidation process of molten titanium and zirconium has not been established. In this study, the standard Gibbs energy of reaction of oxygen and yttrium in molten titanium and zirconium have been measured by a chemical equilibrium technique. Molten titanium, zirconium, and their alloys with aluminum were equilibrated with a Y2O3, A12O3, or Zr02 pellet in a cold crucible. The results are summarized as follows:

The effect of mechanical activation on the reduction kinetics of magnetite concentrate by hydrogen was studied. The magnetite concentrate was milled for 8 h using a planetary mill. After the milling process, the average particle size was reduced from 14 to 4.4 m resulting in a lattice microstrain of 0.30. Thermogravimetric experiments were conducted to focus on the chemical reaction as the rate controlling factor by eliminating external mass transfer effects and using a thin layer of particles to remove interstitial diffusion resistance. The onset temperature of reduction was decreased due to the mechanical activation, and the degree of conversion was decreased by sintering of particles which was confirmed by SEM analyses. In view of the results, a reaction rate expression is discussed from which the activation energy is calculated.

The use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment is well known. Its use to measure grinding efficiency was presented by C.A. Rowland, Jr. at an AIME meeting in 1976. However, due to a bureaucratic error, the paper was never submitted for publication. This metric has nevertheless been adopted by industry as a widely used standard. The purpose of this paper is to re-present and update the application of this tool as a standard for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Tetrahedrite and siderite are two main valuable minerals present in the silver Mária Bana deposit. The tetrahedrite concentrate prepared from it by flotation has certain specific properties from the metallurgical point of view. Siderite is concentrated in the flotation tailings. The paper presents results of the laboratory and pilot-plant testing of the combined hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical methods proposed for treatment of the tetrahedrite concentrate and siderite waste. The testing conditions were based on thermodynamic analysis of the reactions that proceed in the process. The proposed technology makes it possible to separate copper from sulphur, mercury and iron in a straightforward way. Copper, after its refining, can be subsequently treated in the finishing operations. At the same time it is a valuable source of precious and noble metals. The siderite-containing flotation tailings can be converted to iron of the technical purity and slag. The proposed method is a good starting point for the development of the closed-cycle technology.

The objective of this investigation was to determine minimum air velocities and entrainment rates for coal and rock dust dispersion in wind tunnel experiments under conditions that simulate dispersion from surfaces in coal mines where airflows are induced by weak gas explosions. Dust deposits were bed-or ridge-shaped; particle sizes were 6 to 80 microns (cohesive deposits) or 100 to 150 microns (free-flowing deposits); and wind tunnels were 7.62 cm wide by 5.08 cm high by 300 cm long, and 2.4 m wide by 1.5 m high by 215 m long. The investigation showed that minimum air velocities (directed at mid-height) of separate, layered, or mixed piles of coal dust and rock dust were within the range 5 to 30 m/sec, independent of size of wind tunnel. This finding considerably facilitates scaling of data to mine-size passageways. Free-flowing deposits dispersed relatively slowly by single-particle detachment; cohesive dusts dispersed faster by the breaking and lifting of large clumps along weak failure flames; particle dispersion occurred in flight. Layered or mixed deposits of coal and rock dust did not disperse selectively. Semiempirical expressions were derived relating minimum air velocities and dispersion rates to dust-pile geometry, cohesion, porosity, and bulk density.

"Kidd Creek is a large volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposit, located near the west end of the Abitibi greenstone belt, 27 km north of Timmins, Ontario. The rhyolite geology is characterized by a NNE-striking and steeply east-dipping package of rhyolite volcaniclastics upon which has been imposed a strong ESE-striking and north-dipping structural fabric . Massive rhyolite units with grey-black. chloritic cores and yellow, sericitic margins intrude as dykes into the stratigraphic footwall and as sills higher in the stratigraphy. Massive rhyolite units positioned near the top of the felsic pile exhibit an extensive marginal development of hydraulic fracturing and are termed crackle-brecciated rhyolite.The stringer sulphide zone is positioned in a lobate blanket of crackle-brecciated rhyolite at the top of the felsic pile. The stringer sulphide zone is characterized by a mature chemical alteration, being specifically depleted in alkalis and enriched in iron-rich chlorite. with accompanying silica, sericite and carbonate alteration. A suite of trace elements characterizes this mature alteration. The massive rhyolite units, which intrude lower in the rhyolite volcaniclastics, exhibit a core of weak chlorite alteration and strong marginal sericite alteration. Tight or unfractured massive rhyolite units are essentially devoid of sulphide mineralization and exhibit a suite of trace elements characteristic of this immature alteration. It is interpreted that the massive rhyolite units intruded into an already evolving system and ""choked-off"" active conduits carrying hydrothermal fluids and subsequently acquired an immature alteration signature. Rhyolite units positioned higher in the pile developed intense hydraulic fracturing and a mature alteration coincident with the formation of the stringer sulphide zone. In summary, a model, based strictly upon the rhyolite geology, is reviewed to assist in the exploration for volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposits."

"The Cape Ray Fault Zone of southwestern Newfoundland contains two notable electrum/ base metal sulphide quartz vein lode occurrences hosted by two contrasting lithological units, viz. a graphite schist horizon and a granite. The two occurrences, although in proximity, are not in direct contact, but, based on geochronological, geochemical and isotopic evidence, they were apparently deposited from hydrothermal fluids generated as a vapour phase from the magmatic progenitor of the Windowglass Hill granite.This paper provides further evidence, from REE and background A u and Ag data, for the magmatic origin of the hydrothermal fluids. Wall rocks to the electrum-bearing quartz veins in both the schists and granite have experienced a LREE depletion probably due to leaching by Cl-bearing solutions. Gold and silver contents are typically low in all rock types but there is a slight elevation in gold concentrations in those units in contact with the Window glass Hill granite. The granite also has the relatively highest gold and silver contents of any unit in the region.IntroductionThis paper presents the evidence from rare earth element (REE) and gold/silver concentration data for the magmatic origin of hydrothermal fluids responsible for deposition of the Cape Ray electrum deposits of southwestern Newfoundland. The two deposits occur in the Cape Ray Fault Zone (Fig. I) within the Windsor Point Group and Window glass Hill granite. The larger occurrence is called the Main Shear Showing and consists of a deformed quartz vein horizon, which extends for - 6 km, within the late Devonian Windsor Point Group. This unit is an intermixed ignimbrite and mafic tuff sequence with associated schists (metasediments) and gabbros. The host rocks to the mineralized quartz veins are interleaved graphite, chlorite and sericite schists. Basal ignimbrites within the Windsor Point Group have been dated, by Rb/Sr isotopic methods, at 377 ±21 Ma (Wilton, 1983a). The basal ignimbrites also have enriched REE patterns, an elevated initial Sr ratio (0.709) and a peraluminous-siliceous nature which suggest they resulted from the partial melting of continental crust (Wilton, 1984)."

In this paper the main subsidence- ground-structure interactions and an overview of the response of surface structures to subsidence ground movements are presented. The purpose of the paper is to augment our understanding for more effective application of available data as well as to highlight the essential site conditions in building response. The data presented general1 y applies to houses to structures up to 2-3 stories high and no more than several hundred feet in length. Superstructures of these buildings are supported by exterior (wood-frame or masonry) bearing walls with the interior floor loads carried by essentially one row of interior columns. This paper is not directed towards the response of tall buildings, steel-framed structures, or building types commonly associated with schools, churches, libraries, etc.

"Knowledge of the site preference of ternary solute additions is essential to developing an understanding of how these solutes affect the properties of B2 intermetallic compounds. A quasichemical model will be presented which is able to predict the site preferences of dilute solute additions to tliple defect B2 compounds. The only parameters required are enthalpies of formation at the stoichiometric composition. General equations are developed which can be used to determine site occupations and defect concentrations for dilute as well as non-dilute solute additions. These equations use atom pair bond enthalpies as the parameters. It is found that the site preferences of dilute additions are not always in agreement with predictions based on the solubility lobes in ternary Gibbs isothelms. Predictions for dilute additions to NiAl and FeAl are compared to expel1mental results found in the literature. Satisfactory correlation is found between the model and the experimental results. In addition, the predictions from the model on vacancy concentrations in Fe doped NiAl are compared to recent experimental results by the authors.1.0 IntroductionIntennetallic compounds with the B2 crystal structure such as NiAl and FeAl have been investigated recently for possible use as structural materials in high temperature, oxidizing, and/or corrosive environments. The major limiting property of these materials has been a lack of sufficient room temperature ductility. Attempts to improve the ductility have often been made through ternary or higher order alloying. For B2 compounds, substitutional alloying additions can occupy either of the two sublattices and this site occupancy can be crucial in determining how the alloying addition affects the properties of the alloy. In this manuscript we will discuss the use of thelmodynamic modeling to predict the site occupancies of ternary alloying additions in B2 compounds with the triple defect structure."
