It is no longer satisfactory to assess the value of a coking coal on its intrinsic properties alone; its value depends upon its behaviour as a component in a blend. No single test can be used to make this assessment, it can only be made by carrying out a suite of tests. The quality parameters which are considered desirable, and which have widespread acceptance, have been discussed and their application to the blending of coals from New South Wales and New Zealand has been reported and discussed. Blending can be utilised to offset deficiencies, or capitalise on advantages, of the individual coals making up a blend. Coals can be blended, which alone are poorly, Coking, but which have compensating features. Blending also allows better exploitation of coking coal reserves. Several applications of blending have been reviewed with regard to coal producers and exporters, as well as coal users. The possibility of extracting a coking coal fraction from fuel coals is discussed. Blending systems and the coking of coal are also briefly reviewed.

As in other countries, gold mining inNew Zealand has been cyclic in character. Looking at these cycles may provide insights as to what may occur in the future and that is the basis for this study.   New Zealand has experienced four gold mining cycles. The first began in 1857, peaked in 1866 and terminated in 1890. This cycle was characterised by alluvial gold mining by individuals and small groups. This is referred to as the Labour Led cycle. The second cycle began in 1890 and reached its peak in 1906 and terminated in 1929. This cycle was characterised by the use of dredges in alluvial gold mining and was also the peak of hard rock mining. This cycle is referred to as the Technology Led Cycle. The third cycle peaked in 1940. This cycle was far less significant than the previous cycles, arising out of the depression when the unemployed embarked on small scale alluvial mining. This overprinted the continuing decline that occurred after 1906. This cycle is here referred to as the Depression Overprint Cycle.   The fourth cycle began in 1984 when production began to climb rapidly from a very low base. The growth in production was spurred by rising gold prices in the early 1980s resulting in relatively low grade gold-bearing alluvial ground becoming economic. But in the 1990s, production from the new hardrock mines in Coromandel and Otago has overshadowed alluvial production. This cycle is here referred to as the Price Led cycle.   What are the future prospects for gold in New Zealand? Although there are many factors involved, this will be largely determined by two factors; firstly, continued access to prospective gold-bearing properties, and secondly, the price of gold. Based on these factors, three future industry scenarios have been developed. The first of these is industry collapse, in which access to prospective property is constrained and prices mayor may not weaken. The second is industry consolidation, in which the available ground is accumulated by a small number of large companies who can use economies of scale to weather price fluctuations. The third scenario is industry growth, in which access to prospective ground is constrained in environmentally sensitive areas but is otherwise relatively unconstrained. Efficient companies are allowed to work in a policy and economic framework that allows them to make a major contribution to the economy.   While the industry cannot control these critical factors, a good knowledge of the positive role gold mining could play in the future economy may provide a framework by which the access issue, in particular, may be addressed from a balanced perspective.

Thank you for this opportunity to address your conference on 'The role of coal in the New Zealand energy market'. New Zealand's energy market has, in common with much of New Zealand, undergone major change following the market reforms of the Labour Government. As far as the energy sector is concerned this change has been for the better, as it has created for the first time in a very long time a 'true economic market' for energy in New Zealand. This is in marked contrast to the previous regime where: ò Electricity was state operated, subsidised and cross subsidised. ò Oil was imported and subject to a raft of taxes and duties. ò Coal produced by state mines was priced by cabinet committee, based on other energy prices rather than on the costs of production and delivery of the energy product. Today, with the establishment of the SOE's we have a market of competitive supply, where the customer has the choice of energy with prices based on the true costs of production and delivery. This can only be good for the customer as the cost is now based on the real costs of production, not on political whim. So where does coal fit in this brave new world of free market energy supplies? Well, opportunity, they say, knocks but once.

Acid producing potential static tests have been undertaken on sample lithologies from New Zealand coal mines, to rank the lithogies into acid producing waste rock and stable non-acid producing waste rock. Results indicated that the main acid producing waste rock in the Waikato coal region are the marine Whaingaroa siltstone and the Glen Massey formations and the main alkaline producing lithologies were the Tauranga group volcanic-derived sediments (A & D) and the Mesozoic basement. Coal ash analysis of 28 samples from 28 mines have also been analysed for reactive S percentage and their base potential has been quantified by the chemical index of alteration (CIA). The results provide mine management in the Waikato Coal region with a classification of problematic and stable waste rock types. XRF and CIA values determined from wash drill cuttings would provide a method of determining waste rock volumes and magnitude of palaeo-weathering underground.

From their study of the anisotropy of grain boundary mobility in aluminum, the authors conclude that tilt boundaries have a higher mobility than twist boundaries because the atomic misfit at the pure-twist boundary is relatively small compared to the misfit at a tilt boundary for a given amount of misorientation. If this is true, then one would expect a twist boundary to have a lower grain boundary energy than the corresponding tilt boundary. Fig. 6, taken from the work of Gjostein and Rhines,10 shows that this is indeed the case for [001]-cu tilt and twist boundaries in the high-angle region, thus lending support to the authors' conclusion.

Tyre costs constitute 20-40 per cent of the operating cost of large haulage trucks, and tyre pressure maintenance is an important factor in minimizing costs.In the past, control over the hot (built-up) pressures of earthmover tyres has been inaccurate and inconsistent because it has not been possible, in a practical way, to measure the tyre's contained air temperature.A method for measuring this contained air temperature has now been devised using a bi-metallic probe thermometer inserted through the valve stem. Using these measurements in conjunction with a pressuretemperaturechart drawn up using the general gas equation, very accurate control over hot tyre pressures is now possible.

The strength of coal mass saturated with gas is an essential parameter in studying the mechanism of gas and coal outburst, and its prediction method. Up to now, there has not been a method for determining the strength of coal mass saturated with gas. This paper describes a new method whereby the strength of in-situ coal mass can be determined and stored continuously and automatically. The simulation results obtained in the laboratory indicate that the new method allows a fast, reliable, inexpensive and convenient determination of the strength of coal mass.

THE slide-rule, as a quick and convenient instrument for performing approximate calculations, is steadily growing more and more into favour with the engineer, and results obtained by it are considered close enough to enable him to satisfactorily dealwith a considerable portion of his work. To the surveyor, however, whose ordinary computations must be as precise as his measurements, the present makes of rule are insufficient, except for a very narrow margin of the scales and for rough work. Few will carry the rule when they can clearly see that it is unreliable for general routine, and the careful surveyor is inclined to look askance at those who do use it, recognizing the temptation there undtmbtedly must be to push it into work that the log book should be called upon to treat. From the fact that a surveyor's duties take him on the surface in all weathers, and underground in many wet and uncomfortable places, where the manipulation of a book of mathematical tables becomes both awkward and patience-trying, an efficient slide-rule must offer the mbst transparent advantages. Again, a surveyor being specially trained to read divided scales quickly and accurately, the slide-rule must commend itself as an apt addition to his outfit.

A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (C.S.I.R.O.), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.INTRODUCTIONThe fire assay method, although accepted on a world-wide basis as the umpire method for the determination of silver in ores and concentrates, is freely recognized as yielding results which are lower than actual due to unavoidable losses.King (1934) investigated the influence of the cupelshape, size and material on silver losses during cupellation. Using 100 mg silver prills he recorded silver losses ranging between l. and 10 per cent under extreme conditions and averaging approximately 2 percent under conditions which might be considered normal. Guerin (1957) made a detailed study, under carefully controlled conditions in a furnace similar to that described by Esdaile (1952), of the effect of temperature on silver losses during cupellation. It is now becoming mandatory in Australia to rehabilitate ponded fine grained coal mine tailings, which may well have been deposited initially with no consideration as to how or whether this could be done nor to the costsinvolved. Of prime importance to the rehabilitation of tailings ponds are the bearing capacity and deformation characteristics of the tailings. Since the tailings are fine grained, time effects will govern the self-weightdeformation of the tailings initially deposited as a slurry and the subsequent deformation of the deposit under the weight imposed by rehabilitation fill. The engineering properties of a particular deposit of ponded tailings havebeen investigated and its response to the placement of fill monitored and analysed.

The economy of Belize continued to show a very slight but still positive growth during 1986. The gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to have been about $164 million,2 almost the same as those of 1984 and 1985. Foreign investors looked favorably on Belize because it had remained isolated from the sometimes turbulent political and social strife elsewhere in Central America. Reportedly, in late 1986, Guatemala had decided not to pursue its claim to Belizean territory and to give full recognition to that country. Discussions were to be held regarding any matters of mutual concern. New investment possibilities were oriented toward agriculture or manufacturing endeavors. Except for some interest in petroleum exploration, the minerals sector remained limited to the quarrying of construction-related materials.

The published liquidus data on the Pb-PbS system have been correlated on the basis of one-coefficient Margules equations. Thermodynamic properties of the components of this system have been obtained, and it has also been found that the calculated miscibility gap of this system exists over a very narrow range of temperature (1041 to 1058°C).

Large deposits of manganiferous iron ores, representing several million tons of metallic manganese, occur in the United States. The Minnesota deposits of such ore are of outstanding importance because of their size, state of development, ease of mining and proximity to the Great Lakes, which permits water transportation to steel centers. In view of the fact that our steel industry requires large quantities of manganese, for which no satisfactory substitute has been found, and because our reserves of ferro-grade ore are comparatively small, the development of methods that will make our large deposits of manganiferous iron ores available as a source of ferromanganese is an important problem. Realizing the importance of this problem, some years ago the North Central Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station undertook jointly the development of methods for recovering the .manganese content of manganiferous iron ores in a form suitable for the production of ferromanganese, the 80 per cent. alloy indispensable in producing steel. Two types of manganiferous iron ores have been described in previous reports.' The brown ores are higher in iron and lower in manganese than the black ores; the black ores are more siliceous but contain less phosphorus. The utilization of the iron content of the brown ores in the production of steel appears to furnish the best basis for their treatment. The method of attack has been to work out modifications in iron and steel practice so as to recover manganese in the form of slag comparable to ferro-grade ores. The greater part of the experimental work has been conducted with a 6-ton blast furnace and a 1/2-ton basic open hearth. This paper discusses the social and economic impact of mining, and in particular goldmining, on New Zealand. The range of topics covered and their complexity has confined us in this paper to highlighting the main points of concern û a detailed report is under preparation. A major problem in undertaking this study was the lack of hard data on important environmental, economic and social issues and if there is to be effective planning in the area of natural resource use this situation must be rectified. The following conclusions were drawn: Goldmining was very important in shaping New Zealand's early social and economic development, providing wealth, employment and impetus for social change.Foreign investment and technology has been an essential element in New ZealandÆs economic development.Mining is a small industry at present by this must not be allowed to obscure its potential to broaden New Zealand's economic base and provide foreign exchange.With modern methods, development of mineral resources and environmental protection are not incompatible but certain unique and irreplaceable areas must be preserved.There are problems in evaluating mining and other projects because different groups hold different values, and arguments often hinge on the valuation of costs and benefits rather than the technical aspects of the analysis.Mineral exploration is a high risk business and the potential returns must be sufficient to attract capital if New Zealand's mineral resources are to be developed.A resurgence of goldmining will clearly have obvious benefits for Waihi but the local community must plan carefully for their future. New Zealand will also gain valuable foreign exchange required for higher levels of economic activity.

This paper focuses on two sites in the Mount Pleasant - McCormacks Bay area of Christchurch where residential development has taken place either within or immediately adjacent to former quarries for the extraction of volcanic rock. At the Quarry Road site less overburden was dumped on adjoining land around the turn of the century, and c.1980 dwelling and related construction took place on approximately 6 m of relatively loose fill material without the recognition of its presence or geotechnical characteristics. Subsequent settlements led to abandonment of a swimming pool and the underpinning of the 3-storey architect-designed house, whilst litigation brought by the owner resulted in findings of negligence against both the architects and engineers. At the Tramways Quarry site the Council approved subdivision of the former quarry area in the early 1980s without requiring any geotechnical evaluation of batter stability or related issues. During development it became apparent that significant blast damage had occurred to rock faces, necessitating a variety of remedial measures, and that waste materials had been dumped down faces without regard to long-term stability. Both case studies confirm the requirement for careful documentation of former quarry sites by territorial local authorities as part of their administrative function, and for detailed engineering geology and geotechnical evaluation of such areas prior to any residential use of the land.

I had hoped when the time came for me to address this meeting that gold mining would be in a much happier position than we find it to-day.As it is, and because of the demands of national security, we find this great and valuable primary industry relegated to the background and in danger of temporary extinction.These notes refer mainly to gold mining in Western Australia, whence comes the major portion of Australia's production, and their purpose is to record a brief review of the industry immediately prior to the general disorganization that is following the call-up of men from the mines.During this period of reduced production the loss of comparable statistical data will make it impossible to follow the progress of the industry, and, since the period may be long, it occurred to me that information might be derived from an examination of the trend of recent production that would indicate what may be expected of the industry when full production is resumed in the future.Since the revival of gold mining, which started in 1931, most of the old-established mines have reorganized and, in some cases, completely renewed and enlarged their equipment in order to achieve maximum production, and old mines hitherto unpayable have been re-opened and equipped. At the same time large sums have been spent in scientific prospecting and in search for new mines, and it is safe to say that at the end of 1939, when gold production reached its peak, practically every known mine in Western Australia that could be worked profitably was in production.During this period the number of men employed in the industry rose from 5,961 in 1931 to approximately 15,000 in 1939. From the outbreak of war in 1939 to the end of 1941 the output from the mines was maintained at full pressure, maximum tonnage beingrecorded in 1940, although a reduction in the grade of ore treated caused a slight falling off in gold production.During 1941 there was a. fall in both tonnage and grade. The decline in tonnage was due partly to the closing of the Lancefield and Mount Magnet mines, and partly to the shortage of labour brought about by the response of the goldfields to the call for men for the fighting services, the average number of men in the industry in this year being reduced to 12,929.With the entry of the United States into the war in December last and the pooling of the resources of the allied nations, the need for gold as a purchasing medium passed, and with its passing there arose the demand for the transfer of the man-power engaged in gold mining to other fields of industry directly connected with the war effort.There was a ready response by those connected with the industry who...

Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960's and the first half of the 1970's. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon's small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country's sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country's oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon's refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara's capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

The Beckman Air Comparison Pycnometer is as accurate as the specific gravity bottle for the determination of the volume of fine powders, or particles, up to 50 c.c. in volume. The determination using the air comparison pycnometer is performed in a much shorter time.A graph of density versus iron content for samples from four different iron ore deposits shows that iron contents can be obtained to within 4 per cent iron. Field geologists should be able to obtain quick and relatively accurate iron contents of ore samples using the air comparison pycnometer at these deposits.INTRODUCTIONA Beckman Model 930 Air Comparison Pycnometer was purchased to decrease the time required for the determination of the volume of stones and powders. The liquid displacement method was used previously and the time required per determination varied from a few minutes for stones to half an hour, or more for fine powders. With the air comparison pycnometer, the determination takes approximately 2 min and can be quickly checked for accuracy by a further determination.
