INTRODUCTION Geology, the science of the earth, is the fundamental science in the construction of a tunnel. The approximate site of a tunnel is determined by its purpose. The geology of the tunnel site will determine the cost--or feasibility of a tunnel--the specific alignment to accomplish the purpose of the tunnel, the design of the tunnel (within the limits of the purpose of the tunnel), and the methods of construction. The more accurately the geology of a proposed tunnel can be depicted, the more accurately can the cost of a tunnel be estimated. The factors that should be defined for tunnel design and construction are the physical characteristics of the material in which the tunnel is to be constructed. The physical characteristics of the material are determined by the genesis of the material, and subsequent geologic processes that have affected the material. The geologic materials in which tunnels are constructed can be broadly classified as unconsolidated and consolidated. The unconsolidated materials include chiefly deposits of recent geologic time that occur near the surface. Because these deposits occur near the surface, and tunnels constructed in them will be at shallow depth, methods of physical exploration such as geophysical methods, trenching, and drilling will give more data at relatively low cost--therefore the physical exploration is generally, or should be, quite extensive--and the

A unique method of measuring weight loss as a function 3 of time, with a sensitivity of 10-5 grams, while leaching copper minerals with a flowing acid leach solution has been developed. Kinetic results obtained coupled with visual and microprobe analyses show topochemical reaction for the leaching of chrysocolla with sulfuric acid. The kinetics follow a shrinking core model and show ion diffusion through a product layer, chemical reaction at the unreacted core interface and mass transfer through the boundary layer as being important.

Until not so long ago most ring geared mills were operated with fix speed motors only. By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The sophisticated operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore utmost availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives. Now this paper is focusing on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system rather than only show and explains the operational benefit of the different functions. Several measurements of different operating conditions, starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc., made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. The accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.

Although these subterranean cavities are common to the Broken Hill big lode, yet the Broken Hill Proprietary is the most prolific in their occurrence, loud they have been found of various dimensions almost from the surface down to the lowest levels yet attained in that mine. Many of these vugbs have contined valuable silver, copper and lead deposits, and some have been remarkable for the beautiful forms of crystallization pendant from the roofs and walls, and collected on the floors. The question arises, How are these caverns and fissures in the ore body formed? There are numerous theories more or less feasible, but that the causes are variant is demonstrated beyond doubt. That water in its passage leaving channels, is one ofthe chief factors for their production is assured, and their presence is likewise due to the shrinkage and dropping of the earth from varions causes, to the deposition of material forming ledges overhanging, and thus leaving spaces below, and also to chemical erosion and electrical action both of which latter are constantly at work in reconstructing, segregating and dissolving tlie mineral and metallic constituents of all ore bodies.One of the most remarkable vughs yet discovered in the big mine was that opened up about three months bitek in the' heart of the ironstone body on Block 11, and located about 40 feet below the 100 feet level of Weatherley's stopes, but now destroyed in the progress of work. Probably it was caused by chemical action, the eating out, so to speak, of a soft and soluble portion of the manganic iron, leaving a,hollow about 15 feet long, with a width and height, of say, 6 feet, carpeted with beautiful zinc with a modicum of limeincrustations, apparently produced by the percolation from around the carbonate waters holding these minerals in solution. This cavern was divided into, what might be termed, a double chamber, by big boulders of manganic iron, also coated with an aggregation of small crystals of zinc and lime although the actual proportion of the latter was not determined.

METAFORA is a simulation model for determination and evaluation of strategies for operating loader/truck systems in mining. A specific version of METAFORA was used to evaluate the haulage system at Solider Mineral's Aitik mine in northern Sweden, one of the largest open pit mines in Europe with a production of about 11.5 Mtpy (about 34000 tpd) of copper are. A production level of 34065 tpd was estimated by simulation runs with METAFORA. Using METAFORA's dispatch rules (Fixed Dispatch, Maximize Trucks, and Maximize Loaders), the truck/shovel system in the Aitik mine was simulated for evaluating alternative dispatch control strategies. The Maximize Trucks rule gave about the same total production (ore + waste) as the Fixed Dispatch rule but a 9% higher ore production. The Maximize Loaders rule gave the lowest production. The marginal truck capacity decreases with increasing number of trucks serving the same loader due to increasing waiting times. In Aitik mine the low crusher capacity results in long dumping times. If the dumping time at the crusher could be halved, the ore production would increase by 14%. The paper indicates that the use of software like METAFORA can result in a substantial reduction of time, effort and cost in shovel/truck system design and evaluation.

The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Broken Hill was therefore really the birthplace of the Institute.A circular headed Broken Hill, September, 1892, with the signature of Uriah Dudley, Acting Hon. Following the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated In a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock.This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners.EXPOSUREIn their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent. cristobalite plus 11 to 80 per cent. tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.The dust counts mentioned above had been reduced prior to the aluminium therapy studies and the presen.t exposures do not exceed '900 particles per c.c., the average being 370 particles. per c.c. This improvement in dust conditions was due to improved dust control apparatus, which was installed before aluminium therapy was instituted. This paper describes the allure of diamonds over time and highlights the magic and mystery of famous diamonds. Consideration is given to the effectiveness of marketing in the diamond industry. It is concluded that diamonds are held as cherished possessions, valued far above their real market price, retained as valued heirlooms, and widely used as a form of highly liquid currency. In order to sustain value, both from an investment and jewellery perspective, demand has been stimulated to keep pace with growing global supply while the illusion that ?diamonds are forever? has been fostered to ensure that most diamonds, once sold, do not re-enter the market.

Bubble attachment time measurements for the rare-earth phosphate minerals monazite and xenotime were made as a function of oleate concentration, sodium fluoride addition, and temperature. Results indicate that the rare-earth phosphates behave similarly to other phosphate minerals, notably collophanlte and fluorapatite, which have been studied previously. The addition of sodium fluoride yielded a modest decrease in bubble attachment time with fluoride additions below the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, while at fluoride additions greater than the apparent precipitation point a significant decrease in attachment time occurs. Increasing the temperature or the system gave a slight decrease in bubble attachment time in the absence or sodium fluoride. With sodium fluoride addition and below the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, an increase in temperature actually increased the attachment time. For sodium fluoride additions above the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, a temperature increase significantly decreased the attachment time.

Basic Inc., has been mining magnesite and brucite for 27 years at Gabbs, Nev. This is a medium sized open-pit mine. The magnesite deposits are in north-western Nye County about 30 miles east of Luning, Nev., on the west slope of the Paradise Range, at an elevation between 5000 and 6000 ft. The magnesite and associated brucite is used to make magnesia refractories employed principally in the steel industry and magnesium oxide for various chemical uses.

The choice of the appropriate delivery process for a project is often not adequately thought about. The industry needs to be prepared to break its preconceived mind-sets on delivery procedures. Industry should also be prepared, on a project by project basis, to commit to a critical review as to how the assessment and then selection of the best procurement method can best optimize the project outcome for both client and contractor. Conventional standards and biased reliances and experienced based preferences should be challenged. To achieve this requires a paradigm shift in attitude to both the process of tendering and the evaluation of tenders. Tender and contracting practices are dynamic and have moved away from solely cost based assessments. Tendering contracts arise imposing changed duties upon owners. Traditional contract delivery models have shifted, reflected in part by the trend towards relationship contracting. The categories of contract options are not closed. Many are but hybrids of other time-tested models. This paper considers options available for any brownfield or greenfield project. The principles outlined are translatable to supply, upgrade, operation and maintenance arrangements.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities, and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations, or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life, and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training. The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10 November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located, and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

Outsourcing of specialist and non-continuous services is common practice in international mining operations. There is an increasing trend towards this practice in South Africa as a result of the major organisational changes that have taken place in the industry, and as lower revenues and production cost pressures have reduced profit margins. Many specialist functions have been outsourced in the industry for a long time, an example being shaft sinking, which is undertaken by specialist shaft sinking contractors. In the professional services area, some activities have been outsourced, for example the design and construction supervision of tailings dams, but mining related activities such as geology, mine planning and scheduling, engineering, ventilation, and rock engineering, have traditionally been carried out by in-house staff. In this paper some of the industry problems which have led to an increase in outsourcing of professional services are considered. Then the pros and cons of outsourcing are dealt with before outlining the factors which should be taken into account in choosing an outsourcing partner.

Outcomes from a workshop organized through the SAIMM revealed that the minerals and metals industry must develop its ?Engineering Team? if it is to continue to meet the challenges of globalization. The very economy of the country is largely dependent on a competitive and stable engineering team within the minerals and metals sector. With the Chamber of Mines (COM) passing on its education and training initiatives to the industry, the professional bodies like SAIMM must (despite meagre resources) continue the good work done through the COM in the past. The workshop highlighted recruitment and selection, further/higher education, socialization and initial training, deployment and retention and continuing education as priority areas. These are further detailed in this report. Office Bearers have considered the outcomes and the areas where the Institute should or should not be involved have been stated.

In the synopsis, the author concludes that ?high levels of seismicity do not coincide with high rockburst rates?. Implicit to an appreciation of this statement is the necessity of a common understanding of what is understood by the terms: ?high level of seismicity? and ?high rockburst rates?. With respect to the former term there is no difficulty in that the level of seismicity is traditionally measured in terms of the Richter Scale. The latter term however presents a problem in that the author defines it as a particular sort of seismic event?viz: ?Rockburst? is understood as a seismic event that causes damage to an underground excavation with subsequent injury, loss of material/equipment or production shifts? (p. 322). No scale is given of the amount of: ?excavation damage ?level of injury ?material/equipment loss ?production shifts lost whether separate or cumulative, for a particular seismic event to be classified as a rockburst. A further difficulty arises in that in common usage the words ?rockburst?, ?seismic event? and ?earthquake? are all used to describe the same event.

Introduction Fluorspar demand or consumption has been taken for granted in recent years, except for those that produce, market, or consume the commodity. Thinking used to be that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources. It created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The US and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. Goals for the government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. US production and distribution Fluorspar Fluorspar shipments from US mines reached an all-time high near the end of World War II in 1944 at 375 kt (413,800 st). Eighty-two mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) each, and 10 mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st.) each. Illinois supplied 43% of total shipments. Consumption in 1944 was 372 kt (410,200 st), of which 56% was used by steel producers and 32% by HF producers. This was the last year that US production exceeded US consumption. The post-World War II record for fluorspar shipments occurred in 1951 at 315 kt (347,000 st) 58 mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) and eight mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st).
