"INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of iron ore are found in Cherokee, Bartow, Floyd, and Polk Counties in northwest Georgia. The deposits are generally small and irregular in shape. The ore is usually referred to as ""brown ore"" and is predominately limonite. The crude or ""bank ore"" has to be washed and concentrated before being shipped.The proximity of the deposits to the Birmingham furnaces and a favorable freight differential permit the operation of many deposits that otherwise would be uneconomical. The district produced 413,468 long tons of brown-ore concentrates, averaging 45.53 percent iron in 1943.The necessity of developing additional iron-ore reserves for the war energeucy to supplement the production of the Birmingham district, prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate exploration of the more promising northwest Georgia deposits. Thirteen properties in the four counties were explored during the program (fig. 1).HISTORY AND PRODUCTIONSeveral furnaces were operated in the district until the early 1900's, ranging from charcoal furnaces to more modern plants with capacities up to 50 tons of pig iron. No furnaces have operated for about 40 years, the product being shipped to Alabama and Tennessee.Bartow County iron mining is declining, although formerly it was the principal producer of the district. Most of the known merchantable ore deposits have been exhausted. For the past 3 years the Mitchell-Hodge mine has annually produced about 225,000 long tons of concentrates containing 46 to 43 percent iron and at present is the only large producer in Bartow County."

"Following a brief explanation of the land arrangements under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, this paper will examine both a mineral exploration agreement and a mining development agreement negotiated between two large mining companies and two different Alaska Native institutions. One of the institutions is a village corporation involved with an exploration agreement and the other is one of the Alaska Native regional corporations, which is party to a mining and development agreement with Cominco Alaska for the development of the Red Dog lead and zinc mine.Special attention will be given to the factors to be considered when dealing with small aboriginal owners with few resources in the context of an exploration agreement, including development issues which must be considered early in the process. The paper will also discuss the unique royalty and taxation structures developed for the Red Dog Mine Agreement as well as environmental issues. The paper will also consider the ways in which the cultural and differing economic interests of an aboriginal owner and a large mining company have been accommodated in the both the exploration and development agreements"

Summary During Palaeozoic time, there were deposited in the Canadian Rockies four beds of phosphate rock, ranging in age from Mississippian to Jurassic. Two of these beds are of probable economic importance if some means of separating the phosphate from the gangue can be devised. All the more important beds of phosphate rock so far discovered are just behind the front ranges of the Rocky mountains, within fifty miles of the prairie lands of Alberta. Mining conditions are favourable, with an abundance of timber and ample power available. The phosphate beds are all of the sedimentary type, and they all occur, apparently, at the same stratigraphic horizons over a wide area. The conditions necessary for deposition evidently occurred at several different periods in geological time, and were widespread. The most important factor appears to have been the condition of the land surface surrounding the basin of de-position. Both oolitic and nodular phosphate were laid down under nearly similar conditions. Introduction Following the discovery of phosphate rock in Idaho and Montana, search was commenced in Canada to determine whether formations of similar age in the Canadian Rockies carried similar beds of phosphate. The most widespread search has been that undertaken by the mines department of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada. The following paper will discuss some of the results of this exploration.

There is strong evidence that many major oil and gas (O&G) projects are plagued by large cost and schedule overruns, or significant underperformance in productivity. Similar evidence exists for large mining projects. This paper claims that uncertainty is the underlying reason why projects fail to deliver the metrics used to justify their investment, or to deliver the economic value possible if alternative decisions had been made.Most technical and economic analyses are performed to reduce uncertainty to help make decisions. Decision-making is about ranking alternatives and choosing the best; rarely are precise predictions required, if this is even possible. Better uncertainty assessment is one of the keys to better decisions, thus better business outcomes. To get better decisions it is suggested that the focus or reward/penalty incentives be shifted away from the quality of outcomes to the quality of decisions. High-quality decisions are those that are generated from the skilled use of the tools, methodologies and processes from the discipline of decision analysis.Uncertainty is quantified by probability, which is a degree of belief in the truth/falsity of some proposition about a quantity relevant to a decision, such as volume of in-place resource, future price or action of a competitor. The probability a person ascribes to a proposition depends upon their information set; hence probability is subjective – it is not an inherent attribute of the quantity of interest or the physical system.The above simple observations have profound implications for modelling approaches, how they deal with uncertainty, the use of data to help assess uncertainty and the reliability of information provided by subject-matter experts. The limited circumstances under which frequency data (from spatial or temporal variables) can be used to assign probabilities is also reviewed.People, in general, are subject to a range of biases and cognitive errors. Research with O&G subject-matter experts shows that their expertise offers little or no protection from making errors in probability assessments and other judgements.CITATION:Begg, S H, 2016. The historical development of South Yorkshire mining is traced and note made of the liability to generate spontaneous combustion of some of the seams which have been worked. The liability factor is analysed firstly as an inherent property in the material of a coal seam, and secondly as a circumstance of a situation in which access is provided for the air necessary to sustain oxidation. The geological settings in which incidents of heatings have been known to occur is discussed and conditions favouring a natural pre-disposition to spontaneous oxidation exposed, particularly the effect of argillaceous material overlying the seam. An extensive strata-dynamic study follows to demonstrate the situations in which stray air currents tend to impinge on readily oxidizable material. Prevention techniques are indicated as the identification of strata-dynamic situations in which air access to broken coal is induced and thereafter th operational action to seal off the voids which have been opened up so as to exclude air from the broken coal. Measures to reduce the tendency for ventilating air to short circuit across waste voids, and to obviate deflection of air into packs are outlined. The importance of face and roadway design features is demonstrated and the consequences of practices inimical to good control of spontaneous combustion are related. Discussions on means of detection and also on the sealant materials available are included.

Since its creation in 1910, the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines has pioneered in the development of mineral technology, through research. From the very beginning, research on mine health and safety has been a dominating concern, and a responsibility that expanded markedly as a result of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Until the mid-1970's research on fuel technology and coal production also was an important part of the Bureau's work. But in the four years following the 1973 oil crisis, Congress established a reorganized Federal energy research apparatus in which all fossil fuel research-encompassing extraction, use, and conservation-was centralized. Today, the Department of Energy houses Federal research on coal mine production technology, while research on coal and noncoal mine health and safety and environmental technology, and on noncoal mine production technology, remains in the Interior Department as a continuing responsibility of the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines compiled information for the nonspecialist about natural gas liquids recovery from hydrocarbon streams in natural gas processing plants. Attention is directed to the impact of the technology of processing and the quality of gas processed in view of the increased availability of natural gas for processing. Significant changes in product and market trends within the natural gas processing industry are highlighted. Fixed capital-plant costs for grassroots, refrigerated-oil absorption and conventional adsorption schemes, adapted from published studies, are presented giving ranges of cost estimates for medium-sized plants. Marketed products of the natural gas processing industry are briefly discussed in relation to automotive air pollution problems and approaches to their control.

The potential for large-scale fires in underground fuel storage and fuel transfer areas prompted the Bureau of Mines to study fire hazards in these areas and devise improved fire safety technology for use in these areas. This report describes the Bureau's research to characterize and quantify fire hazards in fuel storage and fuel transfer areas, develop guidelines for safe and efficient fueling system design, prepare specifications for automatic fire sensing and suppression systems for these areas, test prototype systems in the laboratory and in underground mines, and perform cost-effectiveness evaluations of the devised technology.

The increase in the price of gold in 1933 was the cause of starting many activities in gold prospecting and mining; it led to investigations of many of the so-called desert placers in the Southwest, which heretofore had not been deemed of commercial importance. Among these, attention was called to some of the gravel beds in the vicinity of the Randsburg-Atolia mining districts of Kern and San Bernardino Counties, Calif., in which gold and scheelite, (calcium tungstate, CaW04) were said to be present. Following a partial sampling and testing of the gravel, large-scale operations were begun in 1935. During the same year more detailed sampling and testing of the gravel beds were done by the author. During 147 days, 1,239 test holes 28 inches in diameter were drilled; their total depth amounted to 16,705 feet. These test holes furnished 2,495 samples of an average volume of 1.0583 cubic yards bank run each; all of the material was run through a sample mill constructed on the property. Original and rather unusual sampling and testing methods had to be used; milling and mining methods for large-scale operations also offered difficulties. The primary purpose of this drilling and sampling campaign was to determine, over a large area, the amounts of gold and scheelite recovered by placer methods such as were already in use on the property. This paper describes sampling and testing methods employed by the author during the 1935 drilling campaign. LOCATION The gold and scheelite placer deposit is in the Atolia tungsten mining district about one-half mile west of the small mining town of Atolia and about 5 miles south of Randsburg in the Randsburg gold-mining district. The deposit lies near the foot of the Rand Hills, in the Mojave desert. The territory is served by hard-surfaced roads from the north and south; Los Angeles is 150 miles to the southwest. A branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad passes within 5 miles of Randsburg.

No single factor in modern civilization has played a more important part in the lives of our people than mechanization in industry and to it civilization owes much of its progress. In no industry has mechanization met more opposition than in coal mining, where ?the introduction of mechanical equipment has been opposed on many fronts for economic and social reasons. The term 'mechanization? as used in this report refers to the application of machinery to cutting, loading, and transporting coal from the face to the mine cars. During 1933, 84.7 per cent of the underground production of the bitu-minous-coal mines of the United States (1) was cut by machines, while in Washington only 17.6 per cent was machine-cut. Information in this report has been obtained from personal observations and from operating officials in the Roslyn-Cle Elum coal fields, especially D. R. Swem, manager of coal operations, and Thomas Murphy, superintendent, of the Northwestern Improvement Company, to whom the author is indebted for assistance. INTRODUCTION Although Washington coal-mining problems relating co mining methods, ventilation, drainage, and preparation of coal have been discussed in many publications, little has been published on mechanization in this region, principally because it has not been accepted generally that mining machines, mechanical loaders, and conveyors are necessary or economically adaptable to the variable and steeply inclined coal beds of Washington. Production of coal in Washington reached its maximum in 1918, when 4,128,424 short tons were produced; from that year, the trend was downward until 1934, when production was 1,383,103 short tons, the lowest since 1898; for the past two years, production has risen steadily.

This is the second in a series of Bureau of Mines reports which de-scribe experiments designed to devise an efficient, economic mechanical fragmentation technique for hard rock. The previous study described the development of the ripper cutting technique to successfully cut hard rock with 3-to 6-in-wide drag cutters. This study was conducted to test the ripper cutting technique at full scale using 9-in-wide drag cutters. The experiments were conducted with a special test device that cut shallow, 6-by 6-ft openings in 9,200-lbf/in2 compressive-strength concrete blocks. The tests showed that ripper cutting can excavate large-scale openings of the type required by the mining industry at a production rate that outperforms the conventional drill-blast technique. Moreover, the system can produce openings of various sizes and shapes, is simple to oper-ate and maintain, and produces very little dust or noise during operation. The system appears to meet all of the criteria for a successful hard-rock mining machine.

Cupreous pyrite deposits in Cyprus have many geologic similarities to Canadian massive sulphide copper-zinc ores as well as certain significant differences. A comparison of the Cyprus and Canadian deposits indicates a complex genetic history for the latter and suggests that their origin should be re-examined. The Cyprus ores occur in subaqueous extrusive rocks near and at the top of a Cretaceous volcanic pile or igneous complex. The rocks have not been deformed, nor have they been deeply buried or deeply eroded. Apparently the ores formed near or at surface in the top of the volcanic pile by a volcanic-exhalative process and from an ore-fluid of volcanic derivation. The Canadian deposits are of comparable composition and have similar geologic set-tings, but occur in the most ancient Precambrian rocks. Their enclosing Keewatin greenstones have, in most places, been deformed, regionally metamorphosed and invaded by granitic intrusions. Comparison suggests that the Canadian ores also formed initially near surface in ancient Keewatin volcanic complexes by a syngenetic, volcanic-exhalative process. Coal production in the United States in 2010 increased to a level of 960 Mt (1,085.3 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), an increase of 1 percent, or 9.43 Mt (10.4 million st) above the 2009 level of 975 Mt (1,074.9 million st) (Table 1). In 2010, U.S. coal consumption increased in all sectors except commercial and institutional, while total coal stocks fell slightly for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2010 was higher by 4.5 percent, while coking coal consumption increased by 37.9 percent and the other industrial sector increased by 7.1 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, which prior to 2008 had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector and is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors, declined by 3.1 percent in 2010. (Note: All percentage change calculations are done at the short tons level.) U.S. coal exports increased from the 2009 levels due mostly to higher demand for metallurgical coal, while coal imports decreased for a third year in a row. The increase in coal consumption for electric generation during the year was the consequence of improving domestic economic conditions further bolstered by a cold winter and warm summer in important coal-consuming regions. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. increased in 2010 by 4.2 percent. Coal-based generation also increased, resulting in a 38-Mt (42-million st) increase in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in all the sectors other than the electric power sector increased by 13.9 percent to a level of 65.9 Mt (72.7 million st).

A broker relies heavily on mineral valuations and independent experts' reports to provide the fundamental information, both technical and commercial, which provides the basis of estimating the sharemarket value of securities and underlying assets. It is important to appreciate the significant variance that can occur between the market value and other types of valuation at a particular point in time. In general, most experts' reports and valuations seek to provide estimates of technical/fundamental or ""fair"" value which correspond to the Corporations Law and accounting standards requirements. They do not usually attempt to estimate (stock) market values and it is usually and quite correctly the broker's task to estimate market values on the basis of a technical appraisal and consideration of all other commercial, market and financial influences. Therefore ideally, an independent experts' report or information memorandum will include material relating to commercial and management aspects of a company as well as detailed technical reviews and fundamental valuations. Wherever sensible cash flow projections can be made, cash flow-derived valuations, usually based on discounted cash flow (DCF) calculations, remain the preferred valuation methodology. Brokers in general would not argue with this preference. However, there is a paucity of examples of valuations where alternative methods are applied as a check on the reasonableness of a DCF-based estimate.
