The traditional direct-heated drying process has been replaced by the steam drying process in non-ferrous metal smelters, where steam is available from waste heat boilers. Many recent projects have selected Kumera Steam Dryers in equipping a new production line or modifying an old production line. The industrial performance of the steam dryers has shown significant energy saving and emission reduction. The steam dryers have been operated at high availability and long maintenance interval. As the process principle of Kumera Steam Dryer is different from other equipment, the set-up for steam dryer plants is configured to fit the smelter site and operation conditions to achieve optimal performance. This article discusses the equipment involved in the steam drying process and their combination options.

Samples of the same coal measure overburden spoil were obtained from three different mine sites. Site A used a 27-m3 tub-mounted dragline, Site S used a front-end loader and truck combination, and Site C used a 6-m3 crawler-mounted dragline. The spoils were analyzed in the laboratory for the strength parameters using drained triaxial tests conducted on 150-mm diameter specimens. Regression analysis was utilized to determine the appropriate failure criterion for the strength data from each site. Spoil obtained from Site S yielded higher shear strengths than Sites A and C.

Perhaps ordinary sounding, but every bit as exciting as those other transportation innovations. Basically, we have gone from bag to bulk, and in the process reached that Last Frontier in manufacturing cost savings. By revitalization of our distribution system, we have made it possible for our mines and factories to realize fully the vast economies of spage-age manufacturing techniques and accomplishments. The pacesetters in this distribution revolution have been you gentlemen, the producers and shippers of dry mineral products. In this area bulk distribution grew up. And here most of the current innovations are being introduced. Management of your industry was early to realize the economic advantages of bulk distribution. Distribution costs of your products comprises a sizeable, portion of the selling price and management is sensitive of any developments which may even slightly reduce the cost of transportation, marketing or the exploration of new frontiers.

An electric survey from a 'plane flown over the ground is much faster and cheaper than an electric survey carried out on the ground. The results are obtained as continuous recordings that are resolvable into both a depth expression and a conductivity effect, so that the indications are easier to evaluate, as well as to correlate from one flown line to the other. The prospecting technique adopted in our electric airborne surveys may be brie fly described as follows: A loop of many turns of insulated copper cable is fastened around the fuselage of the 'plane and connected to a generator supplying a few ampere alternating current, usually of a frequency less than 1,000 cycles per second. Just as the current in the primary coil of a common transformer will induce current in the secondary coil when shorted, the alternating magnetic field from this primary current now induces alternating current in electric conductors that happen to be located in the vicinity of the path over which the 'plane is flown. This induced secondary current in each conductive section of the ground causes, in turn, an alternating magnetic field, secondary field, which disturbs or dampens the normal alternating magnetic field from the primary loop flown by the 'plane. These secondary fields are then picked up and recorded by the help of detecting solenoids, amplifiers, and recorders carried in the 'plane. By closer study of such a secondary field it is possible to localize the secondary current causing it and, thereby, the conducting body that contains the secondary current. In the 'plane are continuously recorded, besides the amplitude or intensity of the field, also the phase, which is a measure of how much the recorded secondary field is out of step with the primary field.

That makes all the difference,” said Dee Kippers, of FMI Henderson Mine, in her talk on “Process optimization during a market downturn (A Moly MacGyver story).” Kippers told an entertaining story of the journey she and her team took in tackling the issue of an annual spike in iron content in the product at Freeport- McMoRan’s Henderson primary molybdenum mine near Empire, CO.As the metallurgists tried one thing after another — cranking up the iron depressant, adjusting pH with sodium hydroxide and hydrated lime, modifying reagent levels — Kippers found that when she shared her results with the operators, communicated with them on what she was doing and got their input, they were more willing to work with her, and more understanding and supportive of her efforts.The results make the case for getting people on board and coming together as a team. The cost savings from their optimization efforts, with little capital investment, have been “enough to cover the annual salaries of our metallurgy department and then some,” Kippers said.Considering the environmentDavid Lemieux, of Dundee Sustainable Technologies (DST), talked next on “Cyanidefree process for gold extraction,” presenting the results obtained from a demonstration campaign of the company’s novel chlorination process for gold extraction and associated arsenic stabilization process. Developed at an investment cost of C$35 million, they are ready for commercialization, having been demonstrated on the laboratory, pilot and demonstration scales.The DST process is differentiated from the Plattner chlorination process, which was in use from 1851 to 1916, by moderate process conditions of atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature — the result of using sodium hypochlorite solution, or bleach, instead of direct injection of chlorine gas — and new, cheaper materials of construction, such as polymers, plastics, fiberreinforced plastics and Teflon, resulting in lower capital and operating expenditures."

The expression "firing open, unconfined shots," as used in this circular, means the firing of explosive charges not confined in boreholes. Examples are the so-called mudcap shots, adobe or dobe shots, or bulldozing shots consisting of explosive charges placed on, under, or between rocks for the purpose of breaking them. The practice of firing open, unconfined shots is not uncommon in coal mines, despite the fact that numerous mine explosions and dust ignitions have resulted from this practice. The usual method of preparing such shots is to place the explosive with its detonator on top of a piece of rock or coal and cover it with clay, loam, sand, or road dust; frequently no covering of any kind is used. In some mines, an open charge of explosive is placed on timbers to dislodge them or in crevices in the roof to break down loose rock that cannot be dislodged with a bar or pick. The explosive charges may be made and fired singly, although sometimes several charges are placed on one large piece of rock with a detonator in each charge, and all charges are fired simultaneously. Although it is general practice to use permissible shot-firing devices, which will not ignite gas or dust to fire these charges, electric power from the regular mine circuits is sometimes used. When the shot is fired, any coal dust that may be present is thrown into suspension by the blast and may be ignited by the intense hot flame of the explosive or by an arc or spark at the leg wires or the end of the firing leads if power from the regular mine circuit is used to fire the shot. Even if there is not enough coal dust present to form a dust cloud, open, unconfined shots can readily ignite methane.

This paper details the preliminary blast designs and practices that have been in use at the quarry and the initial changes made to these designs, and the effect they have had on the excavation and crusher performance.

THE progress in lead smelting practice in the United States during 1930 has been along previously defined lines. Since most of the material treated is high-grade concentrate relatively high in zinc, practically all the plants have been forced to adopt double sintering. This generally results in there being' no matte fall, and most of the copper in the charge is recovered in the furnace dross. The furnace dross is . smelted with. scrap iron and flux .in small reverberatories, giving a shipping matte or speiss high in copper and low in lead. Details of this reverberatory. furnace practice vary at the different plants. There is a decided tendency toward moreintensive filtration of blast- furnace and sinter fume. Bag capacity has been in- creased by using higher pressures and more frequent shaking.

The Right Hon. Viscount Long, late Secretary of State for the Colonies, in his inaugural address to the Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in London last June said: "I am more and more? convinced by every day experience that the development and strengthening of the Empire must depend upon individual effort and action, and that it is useless to look to Governments for assistance." I am inclined to agree with Viscount Long, to this extent, that the initiative must come from individual effort, but Government assistance is necessary to put the results of that effort and action into effect. It is perhaps fitting at a gathering of this kind to remind ourselves of the part the mining industry has played, not only in the development of the British Empire but in the world at large, in the promotion of modern civilization. We do know that all human progress has been coincident with the early discoveries in the recovery and treatment of metals and, as the centuries have passed, the human race has become more and more dependent on these sciences as factors of all progress, and no nation has ever become powerful and prosperous that has lacked adequate mineral supplies, or having these, has allowed them to be exploited by other nations.

This paper describes an advanced oxy-fuel combustion technology for re-melting aluminum that significantly reduces energy consumption and emissions. This oxy-fuel combustion technology developed by Jupiter Oxygen is a patented process for combustion of fossil fuels with pure oxygen while excluding air, thereby creating an undiluted high flame temperature and increased efficiency for process heating in industrial furnaces. This unique process has led to improved heat transfer and longer residence time while maintaining the same process temperatures as with air combustion. The energy efficient combustion process allows aluminum companies to operate at a substantially lower cost due to a dramatic fuel savings of up to 70% for natural gas and waste oil (1). The results of more than 10 years of day-to-day experience utilizing the Jupiter Oxygen Corporation oxy-fuel combustion technology licensed to Jupiter Aluminum Corporation in the aluminum re-melting business are discussed.

In the West, production has been almost halved and many mines have been closed, due to the development and expansion of oil and natural gas industries, which, with some imported residual oil -on the Pacific coast -have provided competition which has been impossible to meet. The two major railway companies have embarked on an oil-burning and dieselization .programme and with this has .been lost one of the largest available markets for coal. Natural gas pipe-line installations still further threaten the remaining outlets for Western coal.In the East, retention of markets has also been a •problem, due to the intense competition provided by imported American •coal and the importation of residual oil.Because of cost it is impossible for central industrial Canada to be supplied with .coal from the Maritimes and markets are, therefore, restricted to fringe areas in Ontario and Quebec, and the Maritime Provinces.The dieselization programme of the Canadian National Rail ways has meant the loss of a large market for Nova Scotian coal and it is fair to assume that within a comparatively short time the market will be completely lost."

Thank you Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen of SME-AIM? for this opportunity to talk to you about, one of the most interesting and challenging facets of our mining industry. Because the need was then -we built in 1964 what is still today, one of the most sophisticated AC mining machine simulators for this or any industry. It simulated the electrical controls and circuits of an AC shuttle car. The student activated the controls on the main console, which represented the elementary control and power circuits. Its accompanying slide-tape program, student manual and worksheets provided our customers with an effective and highly motivational means to teach their face mechanics: 1. practical AC circuit and motor theory 2. print reading 3. troubleshooting techniques Nearly 10,000 men have put in over 100,000 manhours of training on the AC panel and its DC counterpart. The DC panel was modeled after the 14BU10 Loader. The success of these larger panels pointed out the need in our industry for an orangized, basic electrical program designed around mining machinery components & circuits. But probably more importantly, they brought to light the tremendous thirst for upgrading by our industry's employees. We then turned our attention to developing programs around very basic panels. The resulting programs were designed also to assure maximum student involvement.

In order to determine the optimal process parameters of agitation leaching and provide industrial process design parameters, experiments were carried out on leaching behaviors of copper oxide ore with high mud content. Condition tests show that the main factors affect the leaching efficiency as follows: Temperature, Initial acid concentration, leaching time and particle size. As the temperature increases, the copper leaching rate was increased. At 60 ?, the initial acid concentration 80g / L, leaching time 2h, liquid-solid ratio 2:1 and grinding fineness65%-0.074mm, the optimal copper extraction was 83.15%, the acid consumption was 187.91kg / t. ore. Choosing the right valve for corrosive, abrasive slurry applications requires exacting analysis and a comprehensive understanding of the complete slurry process. Within the realm of flow control in abrasive and corrosive slurry applications, there is no room for a one-size-fits-all approach. To ensure minimal maintenance, maximum uptime and the lowest overall cost of ownership, the slurry processing toolbox must contain countless alloy and elastomeric pairings ? each carefully targeted to the particular process medium and conditions. IN the summer of 1937, the Algoma Steel Corporation, Limited, decided to embark on the full-scale development o their Helen mine and the erection of plants to produce commercial iron sinter from its ores at a rate ? of fifteen hundred tons per day. The Helen deposit has long been known as one of the largest bodies of non-commercial iron ore in Canada, consisting almost entirely of siderite with a band of pyrite along the north wall and some lenticular inclusions of pyrite throughout the mass. It originally contained a nominal amount of hematite (2,800,000 tons), localized at the western end of the ore-body, but this was mined out during the years 1900 to 1918. For details of the:-geology of the Helen range and of the surrounding district, the reader is referred to Memoir 147, Michipicoten Iron Ranges, Geological Survey of Canada, 1926 (1). The siderite mass was explored by diamond drilling in 1917 and the portion so drilled was estimated to contain 67 million tons of siderite averaging 36.0 per cent Fe, 3.2 per cent S, and 8.2 per cent SiO,, without establishing its ultimate depth or extent. The variation in the sulphur content shown by drilling was from 1.5 per cent in 72 per cent of the tonnage, to 7.2 percent in the remaining 28 percent. The pyritic ore aver-aged about 38 percent iron, but otherwise its composition was substantially the same as that of the siderite mass.

COPPER operations in the Congo mean the operations of the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga, because there are no other copper industries there. There is a mine at Bwana M'Kubwa, a little way to the South, in Rhodesia, which has been operated on a small scale, and-another farther south, the Falcon mine, but in quite a different section of the country. This Bwana M'Kubwa mine has recently been reorganized financially and the Minerals Separation interests have taken an extensive share in it, so that it may come into operation. The Union Miniere's operations are in Katanga, the most southeastern province of the Belgian Congo, and the company's concession is in the southeastern part of that province. The usual route for going into the country is by way of Cape Town, thence over the South African Railways through Kimberly and Mafe- king to Bulawayo, then by the Beira, Mashonland and Rhodesia Railways to the Rhodesia-Congo border, passing Victoria Falls on the way, and finally by the Belgian road, the Chemin de Fer du Katanga, to Elisa- bethville, the African headquarters of the company. From Cape Town to the border it is about 2150 mi. and from the border to Elisabethville about 158 mi., making a little over 2300 mi. from Cape Town, by rail.

The sodium smectitic clays (bentonites), have more industrial applications in that class of mineral, a driving force to obtain this mineral. In Brazil, there are several occurrences of smectitic clays, unfortunately they are polycationic, with a distribution of several exchangeable cations, where the cation sodium occurs in minor quantity. In this work, the original polycationic smectitic clay was firstly proper characterized and then treated with sodium carbonate obtaining homoionic sodium smectitic clay. The rheological tests in the optimized sodium smectitic clay showed good results for drilling fluids, typical of a sodium bentonite ones.

"The extent and nature of the damage to diamonds at processing plant is largely determined by the design features of the equipment, the characteristics of the feed ore and the parameters of the ore disintegration process (change in the rotational speed of the autogenous mills, variations of the water supply to comminution process, choice of the optimum charge, etc.). To monitor the intactness of diamonds, an instrumental method using the X-ray tomography system and colored synthetic indicator diamonds was developed for identifying the process-related damage. The X-ray tomography system consists of a CT-Portable X-ray tomographic scanner, a crystal positioning device and customized software (developed by the Fraunhofer Institute and Aliud GmbH, Germany). The developed method enables improvement of the accuracy of the results, exclusion of the subjectivity of the mineralogical assessment, acceleration of data processing and promptly planning of the activities aimed at reducing the process-related damage to diamonds. INTRODUCTION Industrial tests of ore processing technology at the enterprises of ALROSA PJSC are accompanied by assessment of the process-related damage to diamonds. The assessment of the process-related damage to crystals is carried out for prompt elimination of factors contributing to the increase of impact forces in the process flow sheet of ore treatment plant. For this purpose a specially selected parcel of -4.0 + 2.0 mm sized natural indicator diamonds is used. The diamonds are exposed to ionizing radiation in order to turn them green and thus to create a distinctive feature. Colored natural indicator diamonds are described, photographed in several views and introduced into the process flow sheet of the processing plant, then extracted from the process flow, described and photographed again. The comparison of diamonds before and after their passing through the process flow sheet of the plant allows to find evidence of process-related impact on the crystal and to calculate the factor of process-related damage (the number of crystals damaged during liberation and recovery), the loss of crystal weight and the degree of damage to the crystals. The method of colored indicator diamonds is used to select processing methods, equipment or regime which would be the safest for diamonds based on the analysis of the factors of process-related damage. This report summarizes studies by the Bureau of Mines in developing a simple method for estimating the phosphorus pentoxide (P205) content of finely ground sedimentary phosphate ores and beneficiated products. The method used involved leaching, filtration, and precipitation. The Bureau found that measurement of the volume of ammonium phosphomolybdate precipitate obtained from samples containing 16.8 to 37.7 percent P205 and the use of an appropriate calibration curve permitted estimates of percentage of P205 content accurate within ± 1.1 to ± 2.6 percent, respectively, at the 95-percent confidence limits. Incidental to mineral dressing and petrographic investigations of western phosphate ores in 1959, the Bureau of Mines undertook development of a simple process-control method for rapid on-the-spot evaluation of phosphate-mineral recovery. Because of the fine-grained and obscure character of western phosphate ores, chemical, rather than microscopic or petrographic, techniques were investigated. The described method involves acid decomposition of the ore or product, filtration, addition of ammonium molybdate reagent to the filtrate, and centrifuging and measuring the volume of yellow ammonium phosphomolybdate precipitate produced.
