Common dry batteries use zinc as the negative electrode. Producers commonly use additives such as mercury to prevent corrosion and to increase the mechanical resistance of the zinc anode. Alkaline batteries also contain it, as an anti-corrosive agent. When mixed with the common municipal solid waste, heavy metals as zinc and mercury pollute soil and ground water supplies, moving to the food-chain and affecting human health. Due to these possible damages, this kind of waste must be properly disposed, or recycled. Thus, even in low amounts (ppm) in batteries, mercury has to be eliminated or, at least, its content should be reduced. This work presents the use of pyromettalurgical processes, to reduce mercury content and recover zinc. The tests involved batteries treatment at temperatures from 300° to 1000°C. Mercury is eliminated up to 650°C, and zinc is evaporated at higher temperature treatment. C

"The Suffield mine is situated five miles southwest of the city of Sherbrooke, in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. lt is the property of Suffield Metals Corporation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ascot Metals Corporation Limited.The old Suffield or Griffith mine had been worked intermittently from 1863 to 1906, without ever producing much ore. In 1951, diamond drilling done by Ascot Metals proved over one million tons of ore in three new bodies. The average grade of this ore was 0·018 ounces of gold per ton, 2-40 ounces of silver, l ·28 per cent copper, 0·59 per cent lead, and 6-45 per cent zinc. Since then the mine has been active, producing between 300 and 700 tons daily. More recent exploration has found continuations of the ore zones.General GeologyThe ore of the Suffield mine is found in porphyritic rhyolites of the Sherbrooke group (Silurian), at or close to its contact with sediments of the Beauceville group (Ordovician). The contact shows pronounced folds as well as irregularities due to erosion of the sediments prior to the outpour-ing of the lavas. On surface the general strike is north, and the dip is steeply east.The footwall sediments consist of interbedded black graphitic slates and. dark-coloured chloritic quartzite, overlain in many places by a thin bed of magnetite-hearing quartzite.The rhyolite host rock is a light grey rock, containing very abundant quartz and feldspar phenocrysts in a microcrystalline matrix of the same minerals. Some sericite is always present, especially in the vicinity of the ore zones, where the rock shows a pronounced schistosity.Several narrow basic dykes, with an easterly strike and vertical dip, cut all other formations. Most are lamprophyres, of either the monchiquite or camptonite type, but one has been identified as a diabase."

"IntroductionThe purpose of sampling is to remove a portion of material from a stream which is representative of it in size, moisture and mineral content.To prevent the effects of segregation, generally caused by the way in which a conveyor, pipe or launder is loaded or directed, the sampler should cut proportionally the entire cross section of the stream.If one conveyor transfers to another at a right angle, fines may be dropped on the near side, and the coarse material thrown to the opposite side. Segregation can also occur as a result of the motion of a conveyor belt passing over the idlers causing the coarse material to roll to the sides of the belt.When slurry changes direction of flow in a launder or pipe, the heavier and coarser fraction will centrifuge to the outside of the curve and tend to remain on one side of the stream. Similarly, if two streams joining in a common launder are not mixed at the point of confluence, they will continue down the launder unmixed . This effect is particularly noticeable in a plastic lined launder.Therefore, a proportional sample is usually accomplished by a constant rate of cutter travel across the entire stream, making certain that the cutter is not full or splashing over before reaching the end of travel.The cutter should operate on a constant interval based on time, tonnage and uniformity of flow. The opening should be at least three times the width of the largest piece to be sampled. The cutter width is more critical with ore samples where particle sizes are large. With slurry samples, the opening is usually much larger than the minimum in order to obtain sufficient samples"

"The Central Patricia mine is in the greenstone belt north of lake Sc. Joseph in northwestern Ontario. It is 90 miles north of Allanwater on the Canadian National railway and 220 miles east of the Manitoba boundary. The unusual feature of the ore of this mine is that the gold does not occur in quartz but in sulphide minerals filling fractures in iron formation.AREAL GEOLOGYThe rocks of the area in which the mine occurs belong to the Early Precambrian. They consist · of andesite lavas and tuff interbedded with greywacke-like sediments and iron formation . A siliceous phase of the sediments lying north and south of the greywacke enclosing the ore-bearing iron formation in places resembles a sheared and sericitized quartz porphyry. This is shown in the legend of Fig. 1 as quartz porphyry and quartzite, but it is possible that the quartz porphyry-like phase is sediment. A northwest- striking dyke of diabase crosses the property 3,000 feet east of the shaft ( Fig. 1).IRON FORMATIONAlthough there are numerous bands of iron formation in the v1cm1ty of the mine, ore has been found to date in only one main and two lesser zones. The iron formation bands range in width from a few inches to 60 feet, and are interrupted along their strike by gaps that are parallel and rake to the east at about 65°. The iron formation is definitely banded and laminated."

Enhanced granulation of UASB granules was tested on pilot scale with two different test reactors (about 5 litres capacity each). Sludge from a local sewage works was used, with peach cannery effluent as carbon source. Cyclic motion of the reactor contents, and a daily replenishment of feed material create the necessary stress conditions for enhanced growth. Sizable granules, bigger than 0.5 mm, were produced within 20 days. Of the two reactors tested, the reactor equipped with a horizontal agitation shaft proved more effective.

THE Taka oil field is in the northern part of Titus and Franklin Counties, in north- eastern Texas. The small town of Talco, from which the field derives its name, is on the P. & Mt. P. R. R., about 15 mi. north of Mt. Pleasant, the county seat of Titus County. The oil field extends east and west from the town of Talco, the approximate center. In May, 1924, R. L. Cannon, while doing surface geology for the Humble. Oil & Refining Co., mapped the surface trace of this fault structure as evidenced by Upper Midway faulted down against Lower Midway. In the interval of sixteen years between the original surface work and the recent productive well completion, approximately eight wells were drilled into the Woodbine sand without success. ALTHOUGH the American petroleum industry was affected by the Second World War from its early beginning it was not until Dec. 7, 1941- that the industry was placed on full war footing. Even throughout most of 1942 the American overseas operations were limited and not until late in the year did expansion of military activities, more particularly the offensive in North Africa, affect the domestic supplies to such an extent that critical deficiencies developed locally in this country, particularly along the East Coast. The definite outlook for greatly expanded offensive operations by the United States on both Atlantic and Pacific fronts makes certain that during 1943 the domestic situation will. not be alleviated; rather it may become even more critical even though additional transportation facilities, now being built and planned. will be completed from the southwestern producing states to the East Coast.

A MATERIAL contribution to the success of our Armies in the field has been the portable pipe-line system. These are the words of Brigadier General R. F. Fowler, chief of the supply division of the War Department. The portable pipe line is one of the "secret weapons" the American forces employed in their swift advances through Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy. Constructed of a light steel so flexible it can be snaked around trees, it can be laid at a rate of ten to thirty miles daily right up to the fighting fronts. It has played a major role in supplying combat troops with products varying from petroleum to water.

In a conventional cement plant, the drying and heating of the raw material takes place in the upper section of a cylindrical kiln where the heat exchange is poor. In a Lepol kiln this part of the process is carried out on a traveling grate where the heat exchange is efficient. The increase in fuel economy justifies the greater complexity of the installation.

In preparing the Steep Rock Lake iron ore body for mining, it was necessary to drain Steep Rock Lake. Using diamond drills, a cut 1800 ft long, 100 ft wide, and maximum depth of 95 ft amounting to 300,000 cu yd of material, was excavated in Greenstone to provide a drainage channel. This was done under the general contractor C. A. Pitts, of Toronto, who in turn employed a diamond drill contractor, Boyles Bros., to do the drilling. The method of excavation was selected be- cause a clean square cut and grade could be maintained in the bottom of the channel. Bootlegged holes would have left blocks of rock in the corners which would have created a situation which would have become progressively worse as the open cut advanced from one side of the ridge to the other.

The current processes that aim to purify molybdenite concentrates are not able to dissolve some copper compounds, hence limiting the processes. Typically, the copper content results are from 2 up to 4 weight percent in the last concentrate. Such values are still too high for the molybdenite concentrate to be further processed to molybdenum trioxide by roasting. In order to achieve lower levels of copper — but also avoid excessive molybdenite losses — a continuous sulfation-leaching process is investigated and applied successfully on a pilot scale. Additionally, a reactor prototype and its process parameters are proposed for a commercial plant.

W. de Klerk, Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs, announced the change of name at the official opening of the main entrance to Mintek's premises on 30th October, 1981. Awards for bravery Two men who disregarded the dangers of fiercely burning timber and falling rocks to douse an underground fire, using their hard hats to scoop water from a drain, received the Chamber of Mines Award for bravery at a ceremony held at West Driefontein Gold Mine near the end of October.

THE manufacture of wheels of metal for locomotives and cars constitutes an important branch of the iron industry, and one closely related, moreover, to many of the conditions of railway practice, such as speed, safety of passengers, and economy of working. It has been, also, since the introduction of iron roads, a subject of constant study on the part both of engineers of construction and iron manufacturers. The car-wheels at first used in Europe had spokes of wrought iron and a hub of cast iron. Subsequently endeavors were made to make the wheels entirely of wrought iron, by forging successively the different parts which constituted the hub, spokes, and rim. By this treatment the expansion of the heated portions at the last forgings gave rise to interior ruptures in the already cold and finished parts. The metal was thus strained before use, and the wheels broke frequently in service. It was in consequence of these failures, doubtless, that the engineers of this country were led to employ exclusively wheels of cast iron. The railway companies are nevertheless greatly interested in the reduction of the weight of rolling stock, while preserving abundant strength, and by the employment of wrought-iron wheels one may attain this double end if the defects of manufacture which we have just mentioned are avoided. This may be accomplished by making the wheels in such a manner that the different parts are welded at the same time, whereby the interior strains which so frequently give rise to ruptures in wheels successively forged are avoided. This result has been attained by what is known in France as the Arbel process, of which I will give you a short description if you will kindly give me a few minutes' attention. The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located about 80 km (50 miles) north of Elko, NV. It produces approximately 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. The joint venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining and 30% by Meridian Gold. Independence Mining is the operator. The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 by mining a series of open-pit mines. The discovery of deeper ores during early 1990s made it neccessary for the operation to mine a large portion of its annual production by underground mining methods. Underground production started in 1993 at the West Generator Mine. This was followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is scheduled to produce about 3.9 t (128,000 oz) in 1997.

Optimising pit slope stability and reducing strip ratio of a mining operation are two key tasks in geotechnical engineering. With a growing demand for minerals and an increasing cost associated with extraction, companies are constantly re-evaluating the viability of mineral deposits and challenging their geological understanding. Within Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO), the Structural Geology (SG) team investigate and collect critical data, such as point based orientations, mapping and geological inferences from adjacent pits to remodel deposits where previous interpretations have failed to account for structurally controlled slope failures. This work outlines the key methods utilised by the Structural Geology team which form the foundations of informed orebody knowledge and subsequent geotechnical design recommendations. This publication utilises the results from a recent analysis to highlight the benefits of this methodology and how it has impacted the economics of an operation through optimisation of a pit wall ‘cutback’ and crest relocation.

Safe work Australia (SWA) has a number of proposed amendments to existing Workplace Exposure Standard (WES) values that may dramatically change how mining workplaces using personal gas monitoring instruments will operate. In consultation with leading gas monitor manufacturers and distributors, an assessment of common Australian alarm settings values and analysis of potential frequency of increased alarm likelihoods has been conducted. This assessment explores the relationships between current monitoring practices, using instruments as health and not just safety tools and identify what will be needed to minimise worker ‘alarm fatigue’ and for common tasks to continue safely. This paper provides the necessary information to aid industry and hygienists to be ‘future ready’ given the likely impact that order of magnitude reductions in time weighted average (TWA) values for NO2, SO2, H2S and other common gases will have on current working practices. Reductions to gas alarm values will provide significant challenges to existing work methods and will require, practical application of the pending future values. Improvements and awareness of instrument capabilities by safety and hygiene professionals will better utilise gas monitors real-time data monitoring capacity and no longer be just ‘safe or not-safe’ instruments. The presentation seeks to promote the practical steps required in setting alarms based on risk consequence and likelihood, increase general awareness of the tools and data available in modern instruments and will enable industry professionals to better manage the challenges of any potential future changes.

The underground mine environment is inherently complex and hazardous, which necessitates ensuring mining workers’ safety. With the fast development of AI techniques, human activity recognition has become a crucial task to enhance daily life, especially in such challenging settings. This enables automatic monitoring and detection of the mine workers’ activities and operations on a large scale, which leads to better support of workers’ safety and welfare. Existing traditional uni-modal approaches, which use data of one single modality, suffer from low data quality and noise, so they struggle to generalise effectively in such extreme conditions (Li et al, 2022). As underground mines have extreme and complicated environments, such as dust, low light, signal interference, and rugged terrain, uni-modal approaches could not resolve such obstacles and are not suitable for real-world deployment. Multi-modal human activity recognition approaches could use data from multi-modal sources, thus capturing complementary information and producing robust and effective performance in recognising and monitoring mining activities. In this case, designing suitable multi-sensor hardware and AI activity recognition models has become a pivotal task. Producing efficient multi-modal approaches for edge deployment is another problem worth exploring.
