Since 2007, a number of Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC) Applications have been implemented on SAG mills, among others, within the Kairos Mining Concentrator Automation Program using ?Profit Controller?? and other tools comprising the ?Profit Suite??. Along this journey, several interesting and challenging issues related to SAG mill operation and control have been faced, which are relevant to be shared with the Mineral Processing community. These advanced control applications have an operational objective whose goal is to increase marginal profit on the concentrator, together with increasing mill stability. In regard to this objective, the issues to be presented and described are in direct relationship with ?Profit Controller? features and the SAG role; they are also stated and linked to get the most of the mill. Some conclusions and findings are also presented, leading to recommended practices on how to use the controller. These findings have also lead us to decide further actions to be taken on new applications to deploy and also on devising and implementing some complementary components to increase robustness of the overall automation solution, as well as reducing the need for operator intervention.

In 1994, Nkana smelter commissioned a multimillion US Dollar Chilean Teniente converter (CT) in its operations in order to improve its smelting technological base. The main objective was to reduce the overall smelting energy costs and increase the sulphur capture for sulphuric acid production to support the company?s leaching operations at Nchanga tailings leach plant. A decade of CT operations have since ensued following its installation and start-up. This paper provides a technical and operational audit of the performance of the CT in the first 10 years of its operations at Nkana smelter.

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

A THEORETICAL consideration of the mechanics of various water-flooding systems with the viewpoint of comparing their relative merits involves the study of two fundamental properties of such systems. On the one hand, it is important to determine the efficiency of the flood as measured by the percentage of the total area that is swept out by the encroaching water before water actually reaches the output wells. This is really a measure of the regional tendency of the water to "bypass" the oil. On the other hand, the various systems must be compared from the viewpoint of their resistances which determine the rate of fluid production obtainable for given pressures maintained at the water input wells. The first of these questions has been studied and very definite answers have been obtained by means of simple electrolytic models.1 These models showed that, in an ideal system, the percentages of the areas flooded out before water reaches the output wells are about 57 per cent for the direct line-drive flood (the input and output wells being equally spaced and placed in alternate parallel lines), 74 per cent for the regular five-spot network, and 79 per cent for the seven-spot network. With respect to the efficiency of the usual flooding arrangements, they are, therefore, given quite accurately by the above numbers. With regard to the resistances of the flooding networks, electrical conduction models have also been used successfully2 and are well adapted to the problem of determining experimentally the pressure distribution and streamlines, or over-all resistances of specific flooding networks. However, such models do not permit readily a study of the effect of changing dimensions or configuration within a network, since a new model must be made up for each set of dimensions considered.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. According to the estimate of reserves by Dowd,3/ the recoverable coal in Floyd County in beds 28 inches or more thick, in thousand tons, is as follows: [ ]

The work described forms part of a Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) funded project, currently an ongoing programme of research aimed at providing ?improved criteria, guidelines and the use of numerical models to design mine layouts at depth, so as to reduce seismicity and enhance worker safety?. The entire project deals with a number of distinct, albeit interrelated, research areas such as: subsidence and caving in hardrock, general numerical criteria for layout design, regional benefits of backfill, concrete pillars, strike stabilizing pillars and bracket pillars. This paper will focus on the last two items only. New considerations for the design of both stabilizing pillars and bracket pillar layouts are briefly discussed.

High Pressure Water Jet Assisted Tunneling The high pressure water jet assisted tunneling project was conducted in a granite quarry near Skykomish, Washington, approximately 90 miles east of Seattle. A 7-ft diam tunnel boring machine was modified and equipped with high pressure water jets. The concept that tunneling rates can be improved by using high pressure water jets was validated, with an average increased advance rate of 50% to 60%. For some tests, the advance rate was more than doubled. A comprehensive economic analysis has shown that very significant savings are possible. At a 50% increase in advance rate, cost savings of 14% and 24% were projected for 10-ft and 20-ft diam tunnels respectively. These benefits were seen to be relatively insensitive to water jet equipment costs.

Development of improved transportation networks in major urban centers has led more and more to underground construction, the only reasonable solution for decreasing surface traffic congestion. Excavations required by these projects usually cause decompression of the surrounding soil mass which results in subsidence of several centimeters. While these magnitudes of subsidence have no consequences in undeveloped areas, they are often unacceptable in urban areas where existing buildings, structures and utilities are endangered. Recent tunneling projects for the extension of the Paris Metropolitan Transit System (R.A.T.P.) underground network were carried out with this in view and gave rise to the development of a number of innovative techniques for minimizing ground decompression and subsidence. As shown in Figure 1, the recent R.A.T.P. expansion program includes a new express metro, 46 km long, crossing Paris from East to West, and the extension of many existing metro lines in the suburbs. From the start, R.A.T.P. was faced with many unique technical problems for which there was little precedent experience. The structures to be built have large dimensions, with cross-sections typically ranging from 40 to 300 m2, and exceptionally to 600 m2. The new lines are often very deep because the shallow profile is already congested by the existing metro, interceptors, sewers and a very large number of utilities. As a result, new construction is often below ground water level by as much as 20 m. Moreover, the geology varies widely from hard limestone with compressive strength over 1500 kg/cm2 to inconsistent water bearing sand. Finally, curves in the East-West line must have a minimum radius of 500 m which frequently forces the alignment to pass below existing structures, buildings and monuments.

A pressurizing system was designed and built to apply a radial pressure of 5.000 psi to rock samples. Samples of the Bradford, Weir and Kirkwood sandstones were subjected to radial pressures parallel and perpendicular to the bedding in the system and the changes in conductivity, porosity and permeability were deter-mined. Asymptotic decreases in conductivity, porosity and Klinkenberg permeability were observed over the 0- to 3,500-psi range. From these data, the increase of formation factor over the same range was calculated. The cementation exponent expressed in the Archie equation was found to increase with pressu,re. The rate of change varied from formation to formation. Only small differences were observed for samples taken parallel to the bedding as comnared to those taken perpendicular to it except for the Bradford sand. Above 3,500 psi the data are not good enough to tell if the properties continue to fall-off asymptotically or in a different manner. A possible explanation for the probable litnit of the asymptotic rate around 3,500 to 4,500 psi is that this represents the maximum pressure which the formations have unrdergone during their geological life as a result of burial. INTRODUCTION For many years measurements have been made in the laboratory of the properties of oil-bearing sandstones with little consideration being given to whether these properties had been changed when the samples were moved from their original position in the ground to the laboratory. Relatively little has been reported in the literature on the effect of pressure on the properties of sandstones. The changes in permeability for eight typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure (0- to 15,000-psi range) was presented by Fatt and Davis' in graphical form. In 1953 Fatt' also reported the relationship between porosity and overburden pressure for four typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples (0- to 5,000-psi range). Fatt later described the changes of formation factor and porosity of 20 typical oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure changes (0- to 5,000-psi range) giving the values of the coefficients and exponents in the Archie' equation, and the more general Winsauer equation', where C, k and m are empirical constants, F is the formation factor, and + is the porosity. During the experiments of this investigation the core was contained in a neoprene rubber sleeve as shown in Fig. 1. It was held between two steel end members which were mounted in a steel cylinder. Part Two of this report is based upon six working memoranda prepared during the first half of 1972 at an early stage in our work for the Bureau of Mines. This work presents preliminary performance estimates of baseband voice and narrowband through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau for operational/ emergency mine communications applications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; on theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau and on semi-empirical models which describe the intelligibility of voice communications as a function of the frequency variations of the signal-to-noise ratio across the voiceband. This work examines the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, and uplink transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/ meter (high) were used; the former figure for both voice and narrowband calculations and the latter for narrowband calculations only. Examples of high, moderate, and low, surface and subsurface, harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low-levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. The effects of simple voice spectrum shaping techniques on the intelligibility of through-the-earth voice communications are examined, and indexes of intelligibility more broadly based than signal-to-noise ratio are discussed. Finally, a means of overcoming the affects of 60 Hz noise and its harmonics which are the largest contributors to typical audio frequency in-mine noise, is suggested. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.

"Ventilation systems are not only an integral part of any underground mine design but are a significant contributor to the mine’s capital and operating costs. The ventilation and cooling design systems presented in this paper were part of the prefeasibility evaluation of an underground platinum mine in South Africa. The mine would ultimately operate at the depth of 1,200 m below surface with a proposed 4 Mtpa production rate. The proposed mining operation is a highly mechanized operation using diesel equipment. Significant daily production rate, large amount of equipment and expansive nature of the operation, contributed to a challenging while flexible ventilation design requirements. This paper presents how to safely and efficiently optimize capital expenditure and operating costs associated with the mine air cooling and refrigeration system through practical ventilation design practices. Successful capital and operational savings by modulating installation and commissioning of refrigeration facilities can influence the economic realization of such systems. The adapted planning and design approach provided a cost-effective advantage while complying with design safety and regulations. INTRODUCTION This paper outlines a prefeasibility evaluation of the heat loads and related cooling system to be employed at the proposed platinum mine. The paper also provides appropriate details for a comprehensive understanding of the applied methodology. The proposed mine will be a trackless underground operation using a combination of mining methods. Initially, ore zones with vertical thicknesses greater than or equal to 18 m will be mined using the long-hole stoping (LHS) method, while thinner ore zones will be mined using mechanized drift-and-fill or drift-and-bench methods; hence, a highly mechanized operation with LHDs, trucks, drill rigs, personnel carriers, etc. is envisioned. Broken rock (ore and waste) will be transported by the means of trucks to the main passes (ore and waste) and collection points. Mining zones identified in the project occur at depths ranging between approximately 700 m to 1,600 m below surface. Primary access to the mine will be via a 1,100 m deep, 10 m diameter production shaft (named Shaft No. 2), three additional shafts will be sunk to provide future ventilation and production support. Three main access levels are established as primary haulage levels and include a series of interconnecting ramps. Additional mining sublevels will be developed as necessary. Figure 1 shows the proposed shaft locations and main access levels in a 3-D elevated view. Mining is performed using highly productive mechanized methods. For this reason, an annual ventilation estimate is based on requirements for mobile equipment (i.e., 0.06 m3/s/kW). The air requirements imposed on the underground operation is further influenced by equipment heat loads, auto compression, and virgin rock temperature, as the main sources of in-mine heat."

"This paper provides an overview of the current use of auxiliary ventilation product and the challenges with limited air quantity in dead-end entry or working face. The PVC low frictional factor, low physical constraint and minimum leakage ventilation duct was development with ""made in US and used in US"". The PVC duct development covering operational and total cost of ownership with on-going success will be presented. This paper will discuss mine sites using new PVC vent duct underground and the results from operational and technical side making a difference. INTRODUCTION The Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) is located in northern central Nevada, and is situated within the Basin and Range province, near the northeast end of the Osgood Mountains (see Figure 1). The TRJV mine consists of typical Carlin type- gold mineralization characterized by low strength rock of altered limestone’s, siltstones, and mudstones. The weak nature of the ground facilitates the underhand cut and fill mining methods [3].Mining Method; Underhand cut and fill : The mine uses underhand cut and fill method which has 12’x12’ top cuts and several different size undercuts. The ore body is accessed off of a secondary development heading, utilizing a heading with a cross section of 14W x 14H or 15W x 16H configuration. In the wider and more massive zones, two headings in a production panel may be worked at any one time. Drift round lengths are determined by the type of drilling machine being used. An example of a typical topcut and associated undercut layout is shown in Figure 2. SECONDARY / AUXILIARY VENTILATION IN UNUNDERGROUND METAL MINES The auxiliary ventilation system provides the required air volumes at the face of dead-end developments and production workings, which in many cases may be considered as the primary method of assuring that the air quantity and quality standards in these working areas are satisfied. The Auxiliary fans and ducting systems are usually the primary means of delivering the required air volumes to the face of dead-end developments and production workings. Both centrifugal and axial-flow fans are used in underground auxiliary ventilation systems, usually electric powered. The internally direct driven axial-flow fans tend to be more popular because of their compactness and adaptability to staging. The most commonly used materials for ridged tubing are coated steel, alloyed steel, fiberglass and resin. Flexible (collapsible) ventilation tubing is also used and is usually made from neoprene-coated or nylon material. To add stiffness and reduce collapsibility these fabric ducts can be formed over a steel spring frame. A very important factor in the design of an auxiliary ventilation system is to minimize leakage and reduce the frictional pressure losses along the auxiliary ducting systems by minimizing their friction factors (K)."

An equation is derived relating AF a", the difference in free energy between austenite and martensite, to temperature and composition in the iron-chrmnium and iron-chromium -nickel systems. This equation is used to calculate at M,for low-carbon stainless steels. A method for utilizing the energetic equations to calculate M, in stainless steels is suggested. In addition, an explanation is given for the anomalous effect of chromium in forming a y loop concurrent with the lowering of M, in iron-base alloys. It has been demonstrated that the effect of alloying elements on the Ms temperature is strongly dependent upon the influence of the alloying element on the thermodynamic properties of the y and a phases. Notwithstanding the fact that alloying elements affect the Ms temperature by changing the lattice parameters, elastic constants, and inter-facial energies of the a and y phases, their primary role is a thermodynamic one. Thermodynamic analyses have been presented for the iron-carbon'-4 and iron-nickele systems in which equations are derived for Fa and FY, the free energies of the b.c.c. (or b.c.t.) and f.c.c. phases. These equations, which can be obtained with the aid of the equilibrium diagrams, can be used to help predict the Ms vs composition curves. This paper deals with a calculation of the thermodynamic properties necessary to compute AFffLY for iron-chromium alloys. In view of the lack of direct information concerning the activity of chromium in the a and y phases of iron, the regular solution approximationa,g was utilized to bridge the gap. After the necessary equations were derived for the iron-chromium system they were used to calculate AFff— Y for stainless steels by combining them with the previous results obtained for iron-nickel alloys. The results of these calculations offer a means of rationalizing the anomalous behavior of chromium in iron-base alloys. The latter depends on the regular solution approximation in contrast to the explanation offered by zener , which is based upon the "magnetic specific heat effect." THERMODYNAMICS OF THE IRON-CHROMIUM SYSTEM If y represents the atomic fraction of chromium in an iron-chromium alloy, then the free energy of the b.c.c. phase Fa, the f.c.c. phase FY, and the difference in free energy between the f.c.c. and b.c.c. phases of the same composition are given through [3] and Fmy represent the free energies of mixing of the a and y phases; while @era -' and uFea 4Y represent the difference in free energy between f.c.c. and b.c.c. chromium and iron respectively. "With the purpose of extracting molybdenum and rhenium from molybdenum sulfide concentrate; .electrolysis of slurry, solvent extraction and ·precipitation operations were carried out. The slurry of the concentrate in 10 mass% NaCl aqueous solution was continuously circulated into a vertical type 10 stack bipolar electrolytic cell consisted of carbon electrode disks, and, the concentrate was dissolved by electrochemically generated oxidizers at 313 K. The current efficiency for molybdenum dissolution was 73 % after 10 hours electrolysis, and the leach solution was found to contain 0.2 mol/l of molybdenum and 4x10-5 mol/l rhenium. This result shows the dissolution is more than 8 times faster than that obtained using a single cell. The leach solution from electro-oxidation was then subjected to a solvent extraction for rhenium which is then recovered as sulfides. After rhenium separation, molybdenum was precipitated by pH adjustment, and solid MoO3 (H2O)x crystals, free of sulfate, were obtained from the leach solution containing large amount of so42-.IntroductionIn the past, electro-oxidation using a bipolar cell was applied for leaching molybdenite concentrate and ores at U. S. Bureau of Mines [1-3] and also at Bhabha Atomic Research Center [4]. In· these previous studies, Moebious type bipolar cells, in which electrode plates were vertically inserted into the free surface of the electrolyte, were employed and its effectiveness was demonstrated.Recently, the present authors studied on leaching of Mongolian molybdenite concentrate, and the effectiveness of leaching of the concentrate by electro-oxidation in alkaline and acidic NaCl solutions was demonstrated [5]. The leaching reaction during the process can be explained by the 18 electron transfer reaction of molybdenite (MoS2) with the oxidizers produced in-situ by electrolysis of NaCl aqueous solution. Further investigation was made with respect to various process parameters for electrooxidation such as pH, pulp density and temperature of the slurry, and the dissolution behavior of minor elements such as iron, copper, and rhenium [6]. Solubilities of molybdenum in the leach solution at, various temperatures and pH .was · studied, and feasibility of molybdenum recovery by hydrolysis of molybdenum species was demonstrated. By adjusting the pH of the leach solution, molybdenum oxides or hydroxides free from sulfate were successfully obtained from the solution containing large amount of sulfate ion. Rhenium present in the concentrate at a level of several tens of mass ppm was found to dissolve into the leach solution, and co-precipitate with the molybdenum compounds. Rhenium in the leach solutions, therefore, has to be recovered before precipitation of molybdenum, otherwise it is lost in the precipitate."

"Pure aluminum (Al) matrix composites with changing the volume fraction of TiB2 particle content from 10 to 30% was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. Then the microstructure, density, dispersibility and thermal conductivity of the composites was estimated. As increasing TiB2 content, the dispersibility of particles and the density of the composites degraded slightly. And, the effect of the dispersibility of TiB2 particles on the thermal conductivity was quite little. The thermal conductivity of the composites was less than the theoretical value calculated by Maxwell-Eucken equation considering the effect of the density. It is due the influence of the interface heat transfer rate, because these composites have many small sized particles and have high interface density.INTRODUCTION Recently, metal matrix composites (MMCs) have been used widely in electric / electronic components, architectural materials, transportation equipment, aerospace and a precision instruments, because it’s superior properties have been greatly watched. Demand of MMC for industrial use has been increasing gradually. Furthermore, multifunction properties are required for the composites strongly. By integrating the dissimilar materials, the composites have various properties that we cannot get from monolithic materials. On the other hand, the response to the thermal management is required for materials, recently, and the need for the structural material controlling the thermal conductivity has been increasing. Especially, superior thermal conductivity and good mechanical properties from room temperature to high temperature are required for heat sink and heat exchanger at the same time. In late years, a study on the composites combining carbon materials and aluminum and copper has been developing, and actually the composites with high thermal conductivity which is not provided in the conventional materials is developed. On the other hand, non-oxide ceramics particles such as SiC and AlN, TiB2 have good thermal conductivity. Particularly, as TiB2 has good electrical conductivity, TiB2 containing MMCs is expected as innovative materials used as electric/ electronic components. Furthermore, as TiB2 has low density, high melting point, low thermal expansion and good deformation resistance, the development of high performance composites with multi-functional properties is expected. As thermal conductivity of pure Al and TiB2 are 225 and 66.4 W/mK, respectively, it is expected that the degradation of thermal conductivity by adding dispersant in Al matrix is suppressed. The authors have carried out a thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, mechanical properties of 20 vol.% TiB2 dispersed Al composites (Sugio, 2016, Sasaki, 2016). In this study, the influence of quantity of addition of TiB2 on microstructure, thermal conductivity was studied minutely."

The present work represents a review of our intestigations into the X-ray spectra of solids, which have been carried out by us along two lines of upproach: 1) St@ of the electronic structure of high -rnelting compounds of transition metals; 2) stzddy of the interatomic binding forces by the fine structure of absorption spectra under varying temperature and concentration conditions. With this in mind, int>estigations hare been made into the emission and absorption spectra of the K-series of atoms of transition elements in alloys and compounds. In the problem concerned with the electronic structure of high-melting compounds of transition metals, considerable importance is attached to the question of ascertaining the role played by 3d4sp electrons of metal and 2p electrons of metalloid in the formation of chemical bonds and of giving, on the strength of this data, an explanation of the properties which seem to be contradictory at first sight: good conductivity inherent in metals and high brittleness and high-melting characteristics typical of covalent compounds. Over the last few decades this question has attracted the attention of many investigators whose studies were devoted to this type of compound. Many works, both of theoretical1-3 and experimental4- l5 nature , have contributed much to the elucidation of the physical character of the phenomenon referred to. Alongside the investigations in the field of electric resistance, Hall effect, paramagnetic susceptibility, electronic heat capacity, and the temperature of transformation into a superconducting state, we should particularly emphasize the studies on X-ray spectra, which have played a significant role in the development of the zonal theory for high-melting compounds. This fact has become highly evident after the theoretical calculation of the energy spectrum has been made and the density of states curve in Tic, TiN, and Ti0 has been plotted by Ern and Switendick3 who used the method of augmented plane waves. Correlation of the results of the theoretical calculation of the band structure in the compounds listed above with the data obtained by X-ray spectroscopy studies showed that X-ray spectra can be a source of valuable information on the electronic structure of high-melting compounds within a wide range of ener- gies. It is well known that X-ray emission spectra basically give a direct picture of the occupied excited states above the Fermi level of a solid (valence band, conduction band) and that the absorption spectra (region of initial absorption) give a similar picture of states corresponding to the unoccupied levels near the Fermi surface. Full information on the density distribution of electronic states by energies can be obtained by combining the emission and absorption spectra. Such an opportunity arises from investigation

"A preliminary computational fluid flow model has been developed to simulate the flow field of liquid steel in the mold region of billet mold casting. This study reports the effect of different Submerged Entry Nozzles (SEN) on the fluid flow in round and square billet, curved mold, casters. In this study, ANSYS Fluent 14.5 software was used to model the 3-D turbulent flow of liquid steel. The standard k-0 model was used to simulate turbulence in the mold region. Similarly, the species transport equations were discretized to simulate the dye injection test into the mold cavity. The behavior of flow in the mold region was validated against previous experimental work. Predicted results showed that different nozzle types plus the slight curvatures in the molds can significantly influence the flow patterns generated within the mold region, and thereby affect the finished quality of the billet products.INTRODUCTIONConventional Continuous Casting (C.C) processes are presently used to solidify more than 95% of the 1.5 billion tons of steel now produced in the world annually (World Steel in Figure, 2014). This overwhelming contribution of C.C processes for steel production is the prime motivation for this study, in order to understand and optimize the casting processes and thereby reduce internal defects and minimize energy consumption. The primary objective of all C.C processes is to maintain liquid metal purity during the casting process and to create a uniform flow within the caster so as to avoid internal and external defects. In this regard, studying fluid flows in the mold region of continuous caster has attracted many research groups, in both academia and industry, in recent years. The mold region is one of the most critical parts of the C.C. process, in which the transport phenomena associated with this region can significantly affect the quality of the final products. Thus, proper control of fluid flows within this region can be expected to greatly decrease both internal and surface defects such as Oscillation Marks (OM), inclusion entrapment, and Mold Powder Entrapment (MPE). In the casting process, the fluid flow in the mold region can be affected by a number of variables, such as; the flow control system (stopper rod or slide gate), nozzle geometry, SEN (Submerged Entry Nozzle) depth, casting speed, mold dimensions, gas injection, and the application of electromagnetic fields. One of the most influential and easily-changed fluid flows are the jets of steel issuing from the SEN. Nozzle geometries are variable, consisting of a number of exit ports, different port angles, and/or port sizes, the bottom shape of the nozzle, and the SEN immersion depth (Thomas, 2001). The SEN characteristics can markedly affect meniscus surface velocities, surface level profiles, and turbulence levels that can vary in terms of the frequency and the magnitude of their fluctuations."

Gwalia gold mine is located close to the town of Leonora in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, some 830 km from Perth. The mine is wholly owned by St Barbara Ltd, an Australian Securities Exchange listed gold producer and explorer. The Gwalia mine is a deep, all-trucking mine and is serviced by a 10 km long decline from surface. Mining is currently 1540 m below surface. Reserves extend to 1820 m below surface and are open at depth. The mine produces in excess of 200 koz of gold per annum.The Leonora area is hot and arid, with a mean annual rainfall of 230 mm and a 95 per cent mean daily maximum temperature of 20.3°C wet-bulb and 35.6°C dry-bulb.The primary ventilation system comprises a 490 kg/s surface exhaust fan, which draws air down a parallel intake system consisting of the decline, and a dedicated fresh-air intake system extending to the bottom of the production zone. Cooling is provided via a surface bulk air cooler serviced by an ammonia refrigeration plant that delivers 150 kg/s of chilled water to the bulk air cooler.The refrigeration plant and bulk air cooler were installed in 2008. The design allows cooling to be increased over time by installing an additional refrigeration plant in a lead lag configuration with the current refrigeration plant when required.Since 2008, expansion and increased depth reached a point where the underground heat load exceeded the installed capacity of the existing 4.0 megawatt rated (MWR) refrigeration plant. In order to maintain the mine design conditions underground, upgrading of the existing refrigeration system was required to bring the cooling capacity to 7.5 MWR.Two expansion options were considered: the addition of an ammonia vapour-compression refrigeration machine similar to the existing one or a lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system using waste heat from the site power station. The original design and layout of equipment on-site meant that either could be used, allowing an assessment of the merits of both when additional cooling was required.The decision was made to install a lithium bromide absorption system on the lead side of the existing ammonia refrigeration plant. This arrangement provides considerable economic benefits, including reductions in site-generated electrical power, generator fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.This paper details the planning, design, installation and commissioning of the absorption chillers.CITATION:Broodryk, A, deVries, J, Kyselica, P and McLean, K, 2015. The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal.
