Biodegradation of cyanide by microorganisms isolated from solids previously exposed to cyanide has been investigated. The anaerobic cyanide biodegradation showed good, short-term removal of cyanide in the presence of nutrients (medium A). This system retained metabolic activity at cyanide concentrations up to 300 ppm at pH 10.5. Microscopic examination of stained specimens revealed that the bacteria were Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacilli. Strains capable of cyanide decomposition were identified as Pseudomonas and Alcaligenes. The kinetics of biodegradation were found to be first order with respect to cyanide concentration, and the overall reaction rate constant is k = 0.102 day-1. Studies with Na14CN showed that 17 % of 14C transformation went into the cells, 18 % into carbonate and 47 % into bicarbonate.

Electrowinning U.S. 4,066,520 - Recovery of copper from copper sulfide ore. Finely divided ore concentrate is leached with moderately strong sulfurous acid to solubilize copper ions, the leach solution treated with calcium sulfite to reduce the copper ion concentration by forming copper-precipitate solids therein, the solids filtered off, and and the filter cake dewatered to obtain a slurry of copper-precipitate solids amenable to direct electrowinning of copper therefrom using a described electrolysis apparatus which utilizes high current flow with a minimum of mechanical agitation. The paper outlines the ventilation practices prevailing in coal mines of Singareni Collieries Company (South India). The high annual average surface temperature and relatively steep geothermic gradient results in virgin strata temperatures in the region of 38- 42°C creating environmental problems in the working places. Expensive methods of air cooling can not be employed as the mines are small, and production and productivity do not justify the costs of artificial cooling of mine air. Controlled recirculation of mine air -- the unconventional technique being tried with success in some coal mines in U.K. has been analysed for improving the environmental conditions. The analysis shows that the method is safe, cost effective and can be applied with very little extra equipment.

Abstract - The metavolcanic rocks of the Dahongshan area have been subjected to both widespread hydrothermal alteration from circulating seawater and to regional metamorphism, such that their mineralogic and chemical compositions have been changed significantly. Studies of immobile elements show that these rocks were originally tholeiitic basalts with geochemical characteristics of T-type MORB formed in a mid-ocean ridge environment. The accompanying Cu-Fe-rich VMS mineralization is in keeping with the original petrology and tectonic setting of these metavolcanic rocks. Regional alteration evident in K-Mg enrichment is related to sericitization and chloritization. Local alteration associated with Cu-Fe mineralization appears to have been accompanied by Si enrichment and Na depletion. P enrichment identifies metasomatism related to Cu-Fe reconcentration in the mineralized zone.

Providing adequate airflow to effectively dilute and remove diesel pollutants in large mine working headings is a little researched area. A simulated diesel mucking operation was carried out in the Exxon Colony Pilot Mine in Colorado to establish expected levels of diesel pollutants in dead-ended working headings. This heading was nominally 15.3 m (50-ft) wide by 9.2 m (30-ft) high. Two face ventilation systems were tested using sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas to represent the diesel pollutants. The results of these tests showed that conventional face ventilation systems operating at high flow rates could adequately ventilate diesel equipment in the 447-522 kW (600-700 hp) range, even in a dead heading 91.4 m (300 ft) in length.

Based on extensive investigations on the effect of design variables on process performance from 1982-85, Nordberg developed a 746 kW (1000 hp) cone crusher with the objective of boosting crushing productivity in existing plants. The MP1000 fits on the same foundation as the 2 m (7 ft) SHD Symons cone but is designed to give two times the capacity of the 2 m (7ft) The economies of scale involved give the customer substantial cost savings. In this paper, process performance of the Nordberg MP1000 relative to the 2 m (7 ft)SHD Symons cone while crushing the same ore, will be presented. Also, implications of such a crusher scale-up to associated cost savings will be addressed.

Thiourea leaching has been applied to a refractory gold concentrate previously treated by bacterial oxidation. Following the bio-oxidation, gold has been leached in acidic thiourea solutions, under different pH(1 - 2.4), thiourea concentrations (2 - 15 g/1), ferric ion concentrations (0.04 - 3 g/1) and temperatures (298 - 333 K). Through this procedure, it was possible to increase gold extraction from 40 to 77 per cent. The increase in temperature raised gold extraction and reduced reagent consumption. Sodium sulphite addition was also very effective in lowering thiourea consumption. Staged leaching operations with interstage acid washing and carbon-in-leach experiments were tested, in an attempt to increase gold extraction. The results of thiourea leaching were compared with those obtained with cyanidation.

The information given by Mr. Harder regarding the Chilean deposits is very welcome. When examining the Caucasian deposits, I endeavored to determine the quantity of ore originally contained in the deposit, and by deduction, the amount remaining for extraction. The leaching behavior of gold in ammonical solutions with iodine as an oxidant was investigated using cyclic voltammogram and Tafel polarization. The majority of the experiments were carried out at 75°C, and the results were compared with consideraton given to the equilibrium of the iodine-ammonia system. The distribution of nine iodide-containing species at various pH values in the absence and presence of ammonia were considered at three different temperatures. It was found that, with the introduction of ammonia into the system, the concentration of iodide (I-), iodine (I2) and triiodide (I3-) is increased substantially, which in turn helps the rate of gold dissolution. The apparent activation energy was found to be about 46 kJ/mole, indicating a chemical-controlled mechanism.

The mechanism and kinetics of pretreatment on pyritic gold concentrate with the catalytic oxidation acid leach (COAL) process were studied in the temperature range of 80-100°C and oxygen pressure range of 230-1013 kPa, with sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and mixed medium of sulfuric acid (11 g/[ ]) and nitric acid (5.5 g/ [ ]). The results show that nitric acid acts as a catalyst, the surfactant changes the hydro-phobicity of resulting elemental sulfur to favor the oxidation of pyrite, and the oxidation-determining step would be the chemical reaction between nitric acid and pyrite. When about 80% of pyrite contained in the concentrate is oxidized, the gold cyanidation extraction exceeds 95 % . The nitric acid in solution can be recycled and used again.

(communication to the Secretary*): The recent papers in the Transactions by Vogt,' Lindgren2 and Weed: on ore-deposits that have formed as a direct result of igneous intrusions, show that deposits of this class are widely distributed over the world, and are occasionally of commercial value. This is especially true if we consider under this head all deposits in the zone of contactrnletamorphism, the origin of which may be ascribed to the gases and vapors generated by the heat of the intrusive rock. Mr. Smith's description of the Chillagoe garnet-formations containing copper, leads one to regard these depoaits as of contactrmetamorphic origin, although he gives certain reaeons for supposing them to be of igneous origin.

El presente texto describe la historia del descubrimiento y desarrollo del yacimiento de pórfido de cobre-oro Bajo de la Alumbrera. En ese sentido, dicha minera es menos geológica, teórica y está más orientada a más modelos geológicos, puesto que cuando K. Richard finalizaba la exploración y evaluación del yacimiento de Toquepala en la década del 60, Bajo de la Alumbrera estaba siendo descubierta. Asimismo, la minera se encuentra al noroeste de la República Argentina en una región donde ocurre una cadena de yacimientos de cobre, conocida como el "Cinturón Metalogénico de Pórfidos de Cobre". Allí también existe el complejo volcánico llamado "Farallón Negro" que en superficie contiene muchos sulfatos denominados "alumbres", de donde se originó el nombre de Bajo (depresión topográfica) de la Alumbrera.

Prof C T O'Connor holds the degrees of BSc, BSc Hons, University of Cape Town (UCT), where he started his academic Lecturer in the Department of Physical Chemistry in 1976. Mr P Smith, educated in England and the former Southern Rhodesia, joined Gold Fields of South Africa in 1966 as a Metallurgical Learner Official. After obtaining a BSc Eng at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1972, he returned to Gold Fields. Mr P D K Robinson was born in Zimbabwe, and was educated at Dale College in Kingwilliamstown, matriculating in 1952. He holds a Mine Surveyor's Certificate obtained in 1961) and a Mine Manager's Certificate (obtained in 1966), as well as an EDP from the University of the Witwatersrand.

A new process to recover platinum group metals (PGMs) from automotive catalyst scrap using metal vapor was developed. To improve the efficiency of the acid dissolution process of PGMs, metal vapor of reactive elements such as magnesium or calcium were contacted with spent automotive catalyst. It was expected that metal vapor would react with metal selectively and form intermetallic compounds. The specimen of the spent catalyst was treated at 1173 K for 3 h, and it was then dissolved in aqua regia for 1 h to recover PGMs. After the reactive metal treatment, 88% of Pt, 81% of Pd, and 72% of Rh in the catalyst scrap was dissolved, while only 77% of Pt, 69% of Pd, and 38% of Rh was dissolved from untreated scraps.

The size distribution and morphology of gold particles in Witwatersrand reefs and their crushed products by D. K. HALLBAUER, Dr. rer. nat., Dipl. Min. (Visitor) and N. C. JOUGHIN, B.Se. (Eng.), Ph.D. (Rand) (Member) Undistorted gold particles were obtained from samples of a variety of Witwatersrand reefs by dissolution of the quartz in hydrofluoric acid. The size distribution of the gold particles and their shapes and association with thucholite and pyrite are discussed. Gold particles with a natural flat, plate-like appearance occur in varying proportion in all reefs. The effect of a number of different comminution processes on the gold particles was investigated, and the shape of gold particles in mill pulp from a number of mines was examined.
