Dr. K. Gebhard In his excellent and comprehensive survey on the future development of the Iron and Steel Industry in South Africa, Mr. Coetzee has also mentioned the direct reduction processes as a possible method of converting iron ore to iron. Mr. Coetzee has made it quite clear that at this stage one should not consider these processes as a 'magic formula' which herald a 'break through'. I agree entirely with this point of view. Once upon a time I held the opposite view, but in the meantime I have revised my views. To do so, I had 40 years at my disposal. In 1930 I had the privilege of being connected with the first commercial sponge iron plant in Germany1 - a plant which was capable of producing 40 tons of sponge iron a day. We were determined to prove that the blast furnace would become obsolete in the near future. We considered it as an unnecessary detour to convert iron ore first into an iron-carbon alloy, which contained further quite a number of undesirable elements, and to remove this carbon by an endothermic process. Direct iron-making seemed to be a logical short cut. Unfortunately, we were not able to establish this 'short cut,', but the life of our sponge iron plant was cut short. We had solved all technical but not the economic problems. Basically the positon is still the same today - mainly economic and to a lesser degree technological aspects determine the rate at which sponge iron plants are installed. More has been said and written than done about direct reduction plants. I think that there are two main reasons for this stagnation in the introduction of direct reduction processes. The first reason is that modern blast furnaces are just too good and too economic ever to be replaced by direct reduction processes on a large scale. This, of course, already limits the field of application for direct reduction plants. The second reason is that sponge iron production and utilisation is based on technical considerations, which increase not only the production cost of sponge iron but also the conversion cost to steel to such an extent that under special conditions only are direct reduction plants an economic proposition. LATTICE parameters of molybdenum of various purities are summarized in Table I. The latter shows that the parameter fluctuates between 3.1467 and 3.1475A. The room-temperature expansion coefficient a is also not well-known as values from 4.90 to 5.20 x 10-6 can be found in the literature.=-' It, therefore, seemed appropriate to repeat the measurements under exactly controlled conditions, using high-purity Hilger molybdenum powder (containing 0.0015 wt pct of Fe, 0.005 of Si and traces of other elements) and a 99.95 pct pure Sylvania Electric preparation (containing Cr, Fe, Ni, Si, Sn, and C in amounts of 50 ppm of each and in still smaller amounts Cu, Pb, Mg, and Mn). Of course, both samples could have contained at least 0.01 pct of oxygen in form of a surface oxide. However, oxygen, because of its small solubility in molybdenum, does not influence its lattice constant.g The determinations were made in a cylindrical precision X-ray camera, 64 mm in diam, the temperature of which was controlled within *0.05"C, by inserting it into a special thermostat." To exclude the film shrinkage effect (after the development of the film), the asymmetric film placement method was used." Absorption corrections (e.g., by extrapolation)" were unnecessary because of the use of a thin Li-B-glass fiber (about 0.08 mm in diam) which was fastened to the sample holder of the camera and dusted with the fine molybdenum powder. Cum radiation of the wavelength 1.389350 kX was applied because it produced in 30 min the line (420) having a high Bragg angle of about 81.6 deg. The conversion factor of 1.00202 gave the results in angstroms. To obtain the expansion coefficient a, exposures were made at various temperatures t, see Fig. 1, on at least two films at each temperature. The films were measured with a componator and the lattice constants a were calculated. The expansion coefficient was found from: where a2s is the constant at 25°C and A is the change in a and t. The same equation (knowing a) was used to reduce all the constants obtained at various temperatures to that of 25"C, Table 11. The probable error S507p (at a 50 pct confidence limit) was calculated from the reduced constants:

Discussion of the paper of J. NORMAN BULKLEY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 355 to 373. GRAHAM BRIGHT, E.. Pittsburgh, Pa.-On p. 265 mention is made of a change from steam hoist to electric hoist. The arrangement mentioned, of using a geared motor, and having the gearing and counter-shaft in a separate, self-contained unit, and then connecting that to the hoist by means of a flexible coupling, is very good. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to change a geared hoist over to an electric hoist. 'In that case the motor could be either direct-connected to the countershaft or geared to the countershaft, making a double-reduction gearing. Trouble has been experienced with this method on account of the hoist not being designed for electric drive. It may be of a rather light construction which will not stand the forces obtained by steam operation, the maximum being determined by the steam pressure which can be obtained in the cylinder. With motors of hoisting types, torques, can be obtained, which are so far in excess of anything that the steam engine could give, that this sometimes results in disaster when a motor is applied to a hoist of that type. If the operator gets a little careless, he may overstrain the hoist, And cause damage, so that this question should be looked into when changing from a steam hoist to an electric hoist. The hoist should be rugged enough to stand the torques which may be attained by careless operation, in which case, instead of using a three-bearing motor, with a pinion between two of the bearings, it is much better to arrange for a two-bearing motor, arranging for a coupling through a flexible coupler. In another place trouble is mentioned as due to the vibration of a geared hoisting motor. That can be overcome by supplying a flexible coupling between the motor and the hoist proper. You will find, if a flexible coupling is furnished, that the motor troubles will largely disappear. K. A. PAULY (communication to the Secretary*), Schenectady, N. The friction factor plot presented by Cornell and Katz4 and developed for the flow of fluids through consolidated formations has been directly adapted for handling fluid flow problems involvitrg both linear and radial flow. In this adaptation the friction factor plot is used directly for the solution of problems and thereby eliminates the use of conventional equations which are specific to laminar (Darcy) or turbutent flow. This upproach overcomes the disadvantages inherent in the use of these conventional equations. It eliminates the necessity of checking the type of flow occurring in order to identify the specific equation which must be used. In radial flow problems, because of the increasing mass velocity of the fluids as they approach the wellbore. the type of flow may no longer remain laminar. Consequently, it is necessary to use more than one equation in a problem and to identify the range over which each equation should be applied. Finally, in practice it has been found that much of the flow of gases through consolidated media occurs in a range that is neither laminar or turbulent. For this transitional region, no convenient equations are available. The method and presented friction factor plot are appficahle to both liquids and gases. INTRODUCTION The flow of fluids through unconsolidated media in packed beds has been treated extensively by a number of investigatorsl,2,3,5,7,8 Most of these studies present friction factors as a function of modified Reynolds number similar to those developed for conventional fluid flow through pipes. These friction factor plots are presented for linear flow; however, Elenbaas and Katz have extended these concepts to apply to radial flow. All of these studies on unconsolidated materials require a knowledge of packing properties such as sphericity. porosity, and particle diameter. Sphericity and particle diameter cannot be defined at the present time for consolidated formations such as those commonly found in gas or oil reservoirs. As a result many investigators have not utilized friction factors and Reynolds number in the study of fluid flow through consolidated media. However, Cornell and Katz4 present a plot (Fig. 1) for the flow of fluids through consolidated porous media, in which the friction factor defined as: The turbulence coefficient, P, is related to the formation permeability, K, as presented in Fig. 2. Canada) - The authors have introduced a subject, the intensive study of which has awaited scientific developments. These are now such as to justify a thorough review of our thinking on the causes and control of rockbursts. The formulae developed in the paper, the comparison between rockbursts and earthquakes in figure 1 and the energy data relating to explosives serve as an effective foundation. In the paper this writer is quoted as suggesting that energy of the order of 10 x 10 11 ft. lb. may have been released in some of the heaviest rockbursts in the Kolar Gold Field. He now hastens to add that such an estimate has no scientific validity. It arises only from a casual comparison of surface and underground effects of the medium heavy bursts, referred to in the paper and estimated by Jones at 3.0 x 1010 ft.lbs., with those of obviously greater magnitude. In any case, we have the estimate by Jones above, that by a team of seismologists 1 on the Witwatersrand of 10 x 1010 ft.lbs., that by Coates of 3.8 x 10" ft.lbs., also referred to in the paper, that by Blan-chard2 for the catastrophic rockburst at Springhill, N.S., of only 7.4 X 107 ft. lbs., and finally the range covered by Cook, referred to in the paper. It is probable also that data for the heavy rockburst at Merkers3 in the WERRA potash area of Germany are available as it was recorded on seismographs from Moscow to Spain. It is the writer's impression that some standardization is present in the estimates above for 10 x 10 10, 3.8 x 1010 and 7.4 x 107 ft.lbs., respectively. The latter, for Springhill, represents a relatively low order of magnitude. It is obvious that any energy estimate must be related to the local geometry of openings at the time of the event. It is also obvious that any explanation of the causes of rockburst must be capable of providing a wide range of energy. However, we must remember that the energy release is an effect indicating magnitude. The cause lies with the mechanism initiating the primary failure, generating the seismic activity, to which much of the damage is probably due.

Rapid analytical assessment in copper mining industry is a limiting factor for operational purposes and for the improvement of processes. The present work aims to review the analytical assessment in the copper industry utilizing emerging spectrochemical techniques such as laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and UV-Vis-IR Hyperspectral Sensing. LIBS is a plasma based spectroscopic method where the sample surface is irradiated by high power laser. The light emitted from the plasma contains atomic -molecular spectral information and can be detected using a simple CCD based spectrometer. UV-Vis-IR Hyperspectral Sensing is produced by the reflection of light from the sample’s rough surface in all directions and it can be collected by using an ellipsoid or paraboloid mirror arrangement. The electromagnetic radiation emitted by the samples in the UV-Vis, NIR and MIR region can be used for molecular characterization. The spectrometer splits different wavelengths through a CCD arrangement in 2D spatial and spectral dimensions, thus a hyperspectral cube of data is generated. Chemometric techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA), K- nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM) among others, can be applied to LIBS and Hyperspectral data for better classification and quantification purposes in copper ores. Real- time determination of elemental and mineral species used for online processing control will help to achieve the copper industry 4.0. INTRODUCTION The demand for copper mineral resources is intensely growing with the increase in population, per capita GDP, the development of new technologies and the increase in global living standard. With the rise in consumption of copper, it is important to optimize mining and metallurgical processes tending to the copper industry 4.0 (Ge, Song, Ding, & Huang, 2017). The real-time analytical assessment in the mining and metallurgical processes is a crucial part for allowing the global improvement in mining industry. The features considered for better analytical assessment are the instrumental automation and interconnection, real time results, low cost, quality in terms of accuracy and precision. Furthermore, improving recovery (extraction), timing and quality of final products avoiding environmental impacts. Some elements such as Cu, Fe, Ag, Au, Mo, S, As, Pb, Zn are important to be determined in the process control. Additionally, rapid mineral identification of few species such as CuFeS2, Cu4FeS5, FeS2, CuS, Cu2S, MoS2, Cu3AsS4, FeAsS, among other can be challenging.

A current trend in blasting of large volumes of rock is to use increasingly larger diameter shot holes. The use of large diameter holes meant; correspondingly large explosive charges will be loaded and detonated, and, if special efforts are not made, will result in more damage and vibration beyond the intended blast area. With the rising awareness of environmental factors, vibration control becomes increasingly important. Equally important is the preservation of intended lines and grades, and in some cases by blasting with care, slopes can be safely steepended. In the past, vibration control was established to prevent damage to man-made structures. The quarry or open pit itself can be regarded as a structure composed of rock. Far too little attention has been given to the effects of blasting on rock walls. The primary purpose of blasting is to break rock. If the integrity of the rock has been destroyed beyond intended lines and grades, the excavation will be more costly than originally anticipated. The increased cost will not only be from in¬creased excavation due to overbreak, but also increased maintenance due to blast induced wall instabilities

The successful technical demonstration of coarse coal slurry transportation at Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine in West Virginia suggests that it is now appropriate to seriously consider this technology in other applications, especially the transport of ' coal in surface mining. Early examination indicates that coarse coal slurry transport may be highly competitive with existing haulage systems, depending on a number of factors. These factors are not yet completely defined, but certainly will include production rates, coal physical and chemical properties, terrain, soil conditions, climate, water availability and quality, availability of skilled labor and other economic considerations impacting the existing haulage systems.

In underground mining operations, ventilation and water sprays are the common methods of controlling dust. In recent years there has been a proliferation of technical literature dealing with water sprays for dust control. However, guidelines for the design of an effective water spray system have not been presented to the mining industry. This paper reviews developments in water spray dust control technology and recommends guidelines for water spray systems to control dust in under- ground coal and non-coal mining operations. These guidelines suggest type, number, location and orientation of nozzles, desirable operating water pressure, and associated filtration system.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE facts is presented in this paper, based chiefly on recon¬naissance made, during the summer of 1903, by myself and my assistant, Mr. R.. C. Brooks, cover practically all that portion of Texas lying east of the 99th meridian. The work was undertaken for the University of Texas Mineral Survey, and was to have been extended over the entire State, but the sudden termination of the survey prevented even the official publication of the results already obtained. Most of the mineral resources of Texas were fully treated by the First Geological Survey, but the clay-industry was tit that time little developed, so that only a few scattered notes concerning it are to be found in the Survey reports. The extensive exploitation of the clay-deposits, however, has emphasized their commercial importance, and has also made accessible many facts of exceptional interest concerning their geologic conditions. The erection of new plants for the utilization of clay-products is usually preceded by more or less prospecting, which, by reason of the scarcity of outcrops, and the geologic and topographic conditions of eastern and southeastern Texas, is often slow and difficult work. This is especially true in the Tertiary and Pleistocene areas, where the structural conditions much resemble those of the Atlantic coastal plain, the deposits being mostly lenticular in form, and surrounded by beds of sand. II. GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE CLAY-DEPOSITS. The accompanying sketch-map, Fig. 1, shows the location of nearly all the deposits examined, their relation to the geology of the State, and the type of clay found in each. The geology is based on the published work of Hill, Cummins, Tail, Adams, Hayes and Kennedy, but the boundaries have unfortunately not been determined over the entire region covered by the map, and, in many areas, are only approximate. It will be seen that the clay-deposits range from Carboniferous to Pleistocene in age, the older deposits being found in the northwestern part of the area, while those of Cretaceous and Tertiary age lie to the east, southeast and south. The Pleistocene clays are found in part in a belt along the coast, and in part along many of the larger rivers, where they often underlie extensive terraces.

Los tres yacimientos se encuentran en los Andes centrales del Perú, en el departamento de Pasco, Junín. La mineralización de San Gregorio está alojada en las unidades carbonatadas jurásicas del grupo Pucará, en su facies occidental; la mineralización de Colquijirca está emplazada en forma de mantos plegados en rocas carbonatadas de la formación Calera, correspondientes al grupo Pocobamba, de edad terciaria superior.

The number of fatalities from mine explosions for the fiscal year 1945 dropped below that of the year before; continued improvement over the record of the years from 1940 to 1945 is hopeful, but the number of reported explosions has increased rather than diminished, and the number of victims claimed by explosions is often more definitely a factor of chance than forethought. Mine fires and explosions can be eliminated through the methods now well-known to those well-informed in matters pertaining to safety in mining but ignored by many coal-mine operators and employees who follow procedures of the past or their own short cuts, regardless of disasters that may result: Tried and proved safety measures for preventing mine fires and explosions have been recommended to the mining public repeatedly, yet only a relatively small but far-sighted minority have adopted these measures and made them a part of operating practice. That far more explosion disasters did not occur in 1945 is fortunate. In 1945 a coal-mine fire of electrical origin caused heavy loss of life, while several others from the same cause were controlled with but few fatalities; this hazard is now being curbed temporarily to some degree after the bad record of the two preceding years, but a real solution of the problem has not been reached, although cooperating committees trying to produce at least some answer have made progress.

"Several experiments have been carried out in efforts to evaluate qualitatively a variety of electrolytes for refining bismuth. Most extensive work was done with the basic tartrate, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluosilicic acid electrolytes. Deposits that are smooth and adherent can be obtained from these three electrolytes if low cathode current densities are employed. All three electrolytes were effective in purifying crude bismuth considerably, with additional purification indicated in each instance by a reelectrolysis step.With the basic tartrate electrolyte best results were obtained when the electrolyte was at 40° C. and contained at least 100 grams of bismuth per liter. An apparent disadvantage was depletion of bismuth from this electrolyte, causing the deposits to become spongy and nonadherent.The hydrochloric acid electrolyte had the greatest tendency to yield rough, dendritic deposits. Best deposits were obtained at cathode-current densities below 2 amperes per square decimeter. A small amount of glycerin helped to produce a smoother deposit, and adding sulfuric acid or methyl sulfuric acid retarded the deposition of impurities. Very good results were obtained in electrowinning bismuth from a bismuth trichloride-hydrochloric acid electrolyte.Smooth and adherent deposits were obtained from a hydrofluosilicic acid electrolyte, with very good refining as regards lead and silver impurities; however, higher reagent costs and slow decomposition of the electrolyte have discouraged its use.INTRODUCTIONMethods of recovering bismuth from ores and byproducts were underdeveloped for many years because of the limited uses for bismuth, the pharmaceutical industry being the chief consumer. In the past decade or so additional uses for bismuth, particularly in the metallurgical field, have brought about increased demand for the metal with the result that bismuth is being recovered from byproducts that were once discarded. In addition to such uses as low-melting alloys, solders, bearings, die setting, etc., some interest has been indicated in bismuth as a possible coolant for nuclear reactors. The advent of ductile bismuth and bismuth-alloy thermocouple wire has contributed greatly to temperature measurement, particularly in the below-zero range."

In terms of present metal prices, analysis of extant records of the Eureka district indicate past production of the magnitude of $200,000,000 in recovered silver, lead, and gold. Production to date has been thoroughly oxidized ore from massive replacements, fissures, manta, and pipe-like bodies-in large part from the massive Eldorado (middle Cambrian) and Hamburg (middle to late Cambrian) dolomite horizons. In the productive area of about 6 square miles carbonate rocks comprise 80 per cent of the section, which includes early Cambrian to late Ordovician horizons. Four-fifths or more of the district's production came from a block of Eldorado dolomite in Ruby Hill that was moved in over younger horizons on strands of a regional thrust fault. The lower 500 to 600 feet of the block was much fractured and brecciated and became host to the ores. The Ruby Hill fault, a late normal fault, limits the Ruby Hill block of dolomite on the north for its entire length of nearly a mile and terminates the downward extent and exploitation of its ores. It introduced an hiatus of some 40 years in the district's development. Drilling of the past 20-odd years, followed by underground work, has now exposed the down-faulted extension of the Ruby Hill block of Eldorado dolomite and its contained ores, dropped 1800 feet in a dip shift to depths beneath the surface of 2000 to 3000 feet. The ores at depth are the sulfide counterpart of those mined in early years on the footwall side of the fault. The ores of the district may be attributed to the same source as the intrusive quartz diorite outcropping in a limited way south of Ruby Hill but found at depth elsewhere in drill holes. The long north-south axis of the district, its anticlinal structure, its major faults, and the distribution of the intrusives and, in their relation to the surface, the ores themselves, all suggest that erosion has not cut deep enough to expose the extent of intrusives and the ores consequent upon them.

Increasing public concern over the welfare of the environment has placed demands on the mining industry to evaluate the environmental impact of mining development. This is a difficult task and involves considering the influence of a multitude of variables on complex processes over a long time period. Few studies which focus on the evaluation of the environmental impact of mining have been conducted and, therefore, there is little past experience to rely upon. This article describes some of the work done to evaluate the potential environmental impact of mining development in Minnesota. Interest in developing the major copper and nickel sulfide deposits near the wilderness areas of northeastern Minnesota aroused concern regarding the environmental impact of mining development in the region. As a result laboratory and field studies were initiated to investigate the potential for trace metal leaching and acid generation due to dissolution of Duluth gabbro. The mining sector in Canada is facing significant challenges to develop a competent workforce, including increased technical and logistical operational demands, and the imperative to promote local content. There is an increasingly unpredictable labour pool which can be aging, or have skill shortages, or non-aligned skills. As globalisation continues, companies also require efficiencies during operation across various locations. AMEC has met these challenges in the global oil and gas sector by developing our Capability Development and Competence Assurance (CDCA) program. CDCA is applicable across all process industries, including mining. CDCA supports simultaneous consistency and flexibility by defining competence at task level, with corresponding best practice blended training programs, and evaluation criteria and processes. CDCA then defines role profiles mapped to local task definition. When combined with web-based technology, this granularity allows us to manage high volume workforces, while retaining individual learning plans and progression, aiding job satisfaction, and employee retention.

Un séchoir à vis chauffé par induction électromagnétique a été développé et implanté chez Mines Niobec pour le séchage d?un concentré de niobium. Ce séchoir a permis une réduction des émissions de poussières et des gaz à effet de serre de l?usine. Il offre une grande souplesse de contrôle, une meilleure efficacité énergétique et peut être utilisé pour le séchage de granulats, de poudres ou autres substances habituellement traitées dans un four rotatif ou à l?aide de vis chauffées par un caloporteur. Le principe de fonctionnement du séchoir est simple. Trois inducteurs opérant à la fréquence du réseau électrique assurent le chauffage des parties métalliques du séchoir, dont des vis qui servent à convoyer le matériel. Le contact du matériel avec les parties métalliques chaudes permet le transfert de l?énergie requise pour le séchage. La conception de ce type de séchoir requiert un équilibre adéquat entre les besoins associés au chauffage par induction et ceux liés au transfert de chaleur par contact et au transport du matériel dans le séchoir. Cette première implantation industrielle a nécessité des efforts de développements importants et une collaboration des différents intervenants. Une revue des principes de conception, des difficultés rencontrées et des performances obtenues sera présentée.

This study was designed to investigate roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines and to determine geologic methods for predicting unstable roof conditions. The study area was located in Harlan County, Kentucky and the Bailey Creek (Harlan coal bed) and Highsplint (Darby coal bed) mines were selected for study. Correlations were made laterally between surface outcrops and within the mines using lithologic and trend analysis criteria. Lithologic criteria compared cyclic changes in roof strata. Results indicated that roof falls are associated with zones of weakness within or between five vertical cycles recognized. Abrupt lateral facies changes occur. In the Highsplint mine the roof was classified in four categories or conditions using 98 rib sections for control. Structure contour and isopach maps were used to project axial trends of the sandstone roof. A roof-fall zone was examined using ten NX cores taken from the roof and included lithologic, petrographic and clay mineral studies. At the Bailey Creek mine roof failure was caused by the heading direction being driven subparallel to paleochannel directions. Computer programs were used in trend analysis studies. Cross-bedding, paleo-channel trough axis and sole mark studies indicated a 350 discrepancy between surface and in-mine trough axes at Highsplint. A direct relationship between joint and "slip" frequency and direction with sandstone roll trends was found. Surface joints compared well with drainage Segments, hilt did not correlate with roof falls in areas of mines under overburden in excess of 600 feet.

"Human factors (HFs) play an important role in the mining and mineral industry, affecting operational and maintenance efficiency and safety. Despite the introduction of new technologies and automation in this sector, it is well known that a significantly large proportion of total human errors occur during the operation and maintenance phase. A comprehensive literature review of HFs across several industries is provided. From this review, the impact of HFs on operation and maintenance is summarized, with a focus on what the mining industry is currently doing and what opportunities exist for additional improvements. Future research directions and themes are also identified.RÉSUMÉ Les facteurs humains (FH) jouent un rôle important dans l’industrie des mines et des minéraux, en ce qu’ils affectent l’efficacité et la sécurité de l’exploitation et de l’entretien. Malgré l’apparition de nouvelles technologies et de l’automatisation dans ce secteur, il est bien connu qu’une grande partie des erreurs humaines (EH) se produisent durant une phase d’exploitation et d’entretien. Cet article propose une analyse documentaire approfondie des FH dans plusieurs secteurs. L’impact des FH sur l’exploitation et l’entretien est résumé à partir de cette analyse, une attention particulière étant accordée à l’évolution de l’industrie minière et aux possibilités d’améliorer davantage ses activités. Sont également identifiés les futurs thèmes et voies de recherche.INTRODUCTIONDuring the past several decades, the mining industry has focused on improving equipment, machinery, and methods that have led to more advanced hardware and software, equipment with higher reliability and productivity, and other technological advancements. These actions have improved safety and productivity and have reduced casualties and maintenance workload. Although today’s mining equipment and machinery are technologically advanced and highly reliable, the risk of accidents is still relatively high and key performance indicators have not improved significantly compared to other industries (Sorensen, 2012). A prominent reason could be due to insignificant integration of human factors (HFs) as part of planning, operation, and maintenance activities. The current mining system is a people system, and inevitably HFs and human error (HE) figure prominently in all aspects of this industry. Even the most advanced technologies and innovations require operators and maintainers with significant knowledge and skill, which could increase the potential for HE."
