"TiO2 has been loaded on cordierite porous ceramic to prepare the SCR catalyst carrier by using both APCVD and sol-gel technology. In APCVD method, TiC14 and O 2 were used as reaction precursor. TiC14 was gasified by using N2 as carrier gas which was controlled to 500sccm. Its reaction temperature and reaction time were limited to 773K and 30min respectively. The physical properties, SEM and SEM-EDX of the TiO2-cordierite carrier and the properties of SCR catalysts prepared by these carriers have been tested. The tests showed that TiO2 loaded by APCVD method were of graininess shape and even accumulation. The loading rate of TiO2 and the specific area of carrier sample were increased 114% and 21 % respectively comparing with sol-gel technology. In the result of sol-gel method, the maximal difference of Ti content was 66.92%, while the result of APCVD method was 18.89%. It demonstrated that TiO2 was uniformly attached with the cordierite ceramic by using APCVD method, which would ensure more active ingredients well loaded on the Ti02-cordierite carrier. This difference made the denitrification ratio of catalyst prepared by APCVD method was 8.1 % higher than that of catalyst prepared by sol-gel method.IntroductionIn recent years, the emission of NOx, which were caused by coal-fired power plants, has gotten more and more attention. SCR (selective catalytic reduction) is the most effective technology to DeNOx [ll. The core technology of it is the catalyst. The SCR catalyst usually uses Ti02 as the carrier, and V2O 5 as the active component [2, 3] . However, the thermal stability and mechanical properties of TiO2 carrier are unstable, which would influence the performances of the catalyst. The commercial catalyst generally uses WO3 or MoO3 to promote its heat stability at present [4-7] Besides, TiO2 is expensive. Compared with TiO2, the cordierite is of good thermal stability and lower price. So loading Ti02 on cordierite porous ceramic as carrier to produce SCR catalyst is of good prospects [S, 91 • Currently, TiO2 is usually loaded on cordierite by the sol-gel method. But some research has shown that the sol-gel method easily reduced the loading performances of TiO2, such as distribution, combination, etc. APCVD (atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition) has many advantages to preparing TiO2 films, such as high bonding strength, fast reaction rate and so on [l0-13l_ In this paper, TiO2 has been loaded on cordierite porous ceramic to prepare the SCR catalyst carrier by using both APCVD and sol-gel methods. The properties of the carriers prepared by the two processes have also been compared."

In a smelting reduction process the reduction reaction occurs predominantly in the liquid state. The main reduction agent is the carbon from the carbon saturated iron bath. The aim of the present work was to determine the velocity equation and the rate constant of the reduction rate of MnO content in a Mn0-SiO2-Fe0 slag by iron saturated carbon and the carbon dissolution rate in a Fe-Mn bath. The manganese content in the iron bath was in the range of 5 to 15 wt.%. It was observed that the rates of carbon dissolution in all Fe-Mn baths are faster than the rates of MnO reduction by the carbon saturated liquid iron.

Foram feitas análise química, análise da intensidade de tensões devida à forma do pino, ensaios de dureza e ensaios de cisalhamento. O estudo foi eficiente para determinar o adequado tratamento térmico a fim de garantir a tensão de cisalhamento estipulada no projeto do pino.

O desenvolvimento dos aços microligados representa um grande avanço tecnológico e oferece grandes vantagens econômicas para diversas áreas da engenharia. Nas últimas décadas houve um aumento expressivo na demanda mundial por tubos utilizados na construção de dutos para transporte de petróleo e gás. Neste caso são utilizados os aços ARBL (Alta Resistência e Baixa Liga) que combinam alta resistência e tenacidade necessárias para operar em altas pressões. Os tubos são produzidos a partir de placas laminadas e posteriormente soldadas atendendo a norma API 5L. Em componentes de geometria complexa, tais como juntas, acoplamentos e conexões, a laminação não é a técnica mais adequada. Para este fim, o processo de forjamento é uma alternativa, pois permite uma ampla faixa de dimensões e formas complexas com controle da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas após tratamentos térmicos adequados. Para avaliar novas técnicas de processamento, foram fabricadas barras forjadas de um aço microligado com composição química similar à de um API 5L X70 comercial. O aço foi lingotado e forjado em barras quadradas de 35 mm de aresta. Em seguida foram retiradas amostras para tratamentos térmicos de têmpera a 920°C e 1.050°C e revenimento de 150°C a 650°C. Após analisar as microestruturas foi escolhida a similar à de um tubo comercial API 5L X70 para preparação de corpos de prova para ensaios de tração. Resultados preliminares mostram a possibilidade de obter aços com qualidade API através do forjamento.

Tensile tests were carried out on a! titanium containing 850, 1250, and 2700 ppm 0, and up to -500 ppm H. The tests were performed at -196", -78", 20°, 150°, and 300°C at a strain rate of -1.0 x 10??3 sec-1. Increasing oxygen content, increasing grain size, and decreasing test temperature resulted in enhanced embrittlement of the a titanium by the hydrogen additions. Metallographic observations showed that this can be correlated with the influence of these parameters on the introduction of cracks into the a! titanium by fracture of titanium hydride precipitates. CRAIGHEAD et al.1 reported that the hydrogen content normally found in commercial-purity a! titanium (60 to 100 ppm) was sufficient to cause a substantial lowering of the impact strength, and they attributed this embrittling effect of hydrogen to the precipitation of titanium hydride. Lenning et al.&apos; found that in commercial-purity a titanium there is an almost complete loss of impact strength at about 200 pprn H, which is approximately half the value needed to eliminate the impact strength of high-purity a titanium. They also showed that the presence of 3000 ppm hydrogen reduces the room-temperature tensile ductility of commercial-purity material to a value of the order of 10 pct; the corresponding hydrogen concentration for high-purity titanium is over 9000 ppm. It thus appears that the detrimental effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of commercial-purity titanium becomes evident at much lower hydrogen contents than for high-purity titanium. The main difference between the two types of a titanium might be expected to be the higher level of interstitial impurity in the commercial-purity grade. Jaffee et a1.3 studied the influence of temperature and strain rate on the hydrogen embrittlement of high-purity and commercial-purity ! titanium. In general, the behavior was the same for both materials; embrittlement was enhanced by decreasing temperature and increasing strain rate. Recent results from tests on commercial-purity a titanium containing 850 ppm O and varying amounts of hydrogen up to -500 ppm showed that the degree of embrittlement by hydrogen is intimately related to the fracture characteristics of titanium hydride precipitates.4 The present paper considers the interrelationship between the mechanical properties and micro-structural features of commercial-purity a! titanium containing 850, 1250, and 2700 ppm 0 and varying amounts of hydrogen up to -500 ppm. 1. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three types of commercial-purity titanium supplied by IMI* were used in the investigation, and for the *Address: Witton, Birmingham 6, United Kingdom. purpose of this paper are designated Ti 115, Ti 130, and Ti 160. The principal impurity elements are given in Table I. The material was received in the form of 12.7 mm diam bars having a fully recrystallized structure. Tensile specimens with a round cross-section of 4.5 mm diam and a gage length of 15.2 mm were machined from the bars. In order to develop the same grain size (mean linear intercept of grain boundaries) in each of the three types the specimens were annealed under a dynamic vacuum of <10?5 mm Hg, Table 11. Specimen hydriding was carried out in a modified Sieverts apparatus;&apos; hydrogen was taken into solution at 450°C and after holding the specimens at this temperature for 24 hr they were furnace-cooled to room temperature at an average rate of -100 C deg per hr. By this method nominal hydrogen contents of 0, 50, 100, 250, and 500 ppm were introduced into specimens of Ti 115, Ti 130, and Ti 160 (100 ppm (wt) -0.5 at. pct). The actual hydrogen contents were calculated from the weight differences obtained by weighing the specimens before and after the hydriding treatment. Tensile tests were carried out at temperatures of -196", -78", 20°, 150°, and 300°C on a 10,000 kg In-stron machine at a nominal strain rate of -1.0 x 10-3 sec-1. Fractured specimens were sectioned in planes parallel to the tensile axis, mechanically polished to 0.25 µm grade of diamond paste, and then attack polished using a solution containing by volume 99 parts H2O, 1 part HF, and 1 part HNO3. Although the latter treatment unavoidably opened out cracks and voids visible after mechanical polishing, it did reveal the grain structure, titanium hydride morphology, and deformation twinning structure.

This report establishes a methodology for the evaluation of gas detection devices and is the result of a critical investigation into the basic principles defining gas detector performance. A scheme is presented to evaluate the performance of a test sample of gas detectors based on the detector type and intended application. Test procedures, worksheets, test apparatus, glossary and statistical methods for handling test data arc given. In addition, evaluation standards and test parameters are identified. It is intended that this report serve as a comprehensive framework for the eventual certification of all gas detectors for mine applications. A plan is proposed and recommended for the quantification and implementation of evaluation standards for gas detection device certification.

The two calcium sulfate minerals-gypsum and anhydrite-occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4•2H2O) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO4) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the largest part of total calcium sulfate reserves. However, it has very minor economic use, and most of the following discussion will be devoted to gypsum. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal constituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [Sulfur Combined Lime Trioxide Water (CaO) (SO,) (H2O) Gypsum 32.6% 46.5% 20.9% Anhydrite 41.2% 58.8% -] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have never been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. As a result most mine production of gypsum will range between 85 and 95% pure. Often it is used as mined, although in certain cases, one or more forms of mineral beneficiation are employed to upgrade the product. End Uses The largest use for gypsum is based upon the unique property which calcium sulfate has of readily giving up, or taking on, water of crystallization. With the application of a moderate amount of heat in a process known as calcining, gypsum is converted to plaster of paris (the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate, CaSO4 ½ H2O) which when mixed with water will set or harden as the calcium sulfate returns to the dihydrate form. This semifinished product, usually called stucco, is then manufactured into a large variety of plasters, wallboard, and block for construction use, or into plasters for industrial applications. About 75% of the gypsum used in the United States is calcined for these purposes. Uncalcined uses of gypsum are principally as a retarder for portland cement, as a soil conditioner, as a mineral filler, and other minor industrial applications. About 25% of the gypsum mined in the United States goes into these markets; however, in less developed countries where construction and other industrial uses may be quite limited, the use of uncalcined gypsum for portland cement retarder may well be the dominant-if not the only-market for the mineral. It has often been noted that calcium sulfate constitutes the world&apos;s largest reserve of sulfur, and minor use of both anhydrite and gypsum has been made to produce sulfuric acid or other sulfur compounds such as ammonium sulfate. However, because sulfur is readily available at lower cost from other sources, use of calcium sulfate has been limited to only a few locations where it could compete economically. No such use is reported in the United States at this time. Mineralogy Anhydrite, CaSO4 because of its geologically rapid conversion to gypsum, and relatively high solubility (about 0.2 g per 100 g H2O) is not often found outcropping in climates wet enough to support abundant vegetation except on steeply dipping slopes or other places where hydrated material is continuously removed. To reduce operator exposure to noise from vibrating screens at coal preparation plants. Background Hearing loss is one of the most common occupational illnesses in the United States. In the U.S. mining industry, hearing loss is 2.5 to 3 times greater than what is expected for the average population that is not exposed to occupational noise. Furthermore, studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed that by age 50, 90% of coal miners have a hearing impairment versus only 10% of the population that is not exposed to occupational noise. A NIOSH cross-sectional survey of coal preparation plants showed that 43.5% of employees were overexposed to noise. The study also found that vibrating screens were one of the top five loudest types of equipment at these plants?as well as the most numerous?making them a key noise source to address.

Flame safety lamps have been used in gaseous mines since the Davy lamp was introduced, more than 100 years ago. During the last decade the flame safety lamp has been rapidly replaced by the electric lamp as a device for illuminating the miner's working place; in the United States the electric cap lamp has been widely adopted. For example, in 1911 approximately 45,000 flame lamps and no electric lamps were being used in the Pennsylvania bituminous mines, which were then producing 35 per cent of all the soft coal mined in this country; by 1918 the flame lamps had decreased to 17,000, whereas electric lamps-mostly of one maketotaled nearly 48,000. In Great Britain during the same years the total of 723,934 flame lamps decreased to 590,185 and the electric lamps gained rapidly from 4,298 to 156,521. No later reliable figures are at hand. However, before the flame lamp becomes obsolete, it is fitting that the Bureau of Mines compile a permanent record of a device which has served the mining industry for more than three generations, and not only made possible the development of entire districts that otherwise could not have been worked but undoubtedly saved the lives of thousands of underground workers. Flame safety lamps are capable of doing more than the name indicates. First, under normal conditions, they can be used in a mine atmosphere that contains an explosive mixture of gas and air without great danger of exploding such a mixture, though such use of a flame lamp should not be permitted. Second, to an experienced man they indicate percentages of gas much lower than the explosive limit, and thus can be used to indicate to workers the approach of an unsafe condition in the mine atmosphere. Third, flame lamps will not burn in an atmosphere greatly deficient in oxygen, and they therefore warn the users of such deficiency in time to withdraw to a place of safety. Flame safety lamps are still used rather widely in the United States for general illumination and to a still greater extent for detecting gas. Many coal-producing States require fire bosses to use these lamps in gaseous mines, and the regulations of several States specify that a gIven number of such lamps be kept available for emergency service.

"The study on the preparation of mono-dispersed liquid droplet was performed using ultrasonic as one of the steps of producing the perfectly mono-dispersed particle. The ultrasonic system was a 33.6kHz ultrasonic generator, an amplifier, an electric distortion element, and a bolted Langevin type horn installed in .a cell. For the first time, a liquid pillar under a nozzle of the cell ·was stably formed. Then, dense and coarse parts were alternatively constructed by oscillating the wavelength of the ultrasonic.· The diameter of those liquid droplets were found to be· perfectly uniform, therefore, it was measured by ""multiplex photography"" using a synchronized stroboscope with the ultrasonic.- From the results, more than 30,000 of perfectly uniform liquid droplets in 1 second were observed by this method.IntroductionRecently, research on the control of physical form is done in various fields of industry. Some examples are the processing technology of the minute compound material of micro-machines and integrated circuits, and the form control of molecule size like catalysts. There is a need for such material to take on various forms in correspondence to its use. ""Form control"" as used in this study will indicate ""research on physical chemistry factors which determine the size of the material"" and will refer to the contour uniformity of comparatively little particles. A well-known method of preparing particles is to spout a mist of liquid and slurry from a nozzle l) 2). Particles for metals, catalysts and food have been prepared by this method. In this case, although an approximate particle diameter can be decided by controlling the nozzle diameter and the violent outflow velocity, it is not easy to completely control ·the contour and to prepare a particle with uniform diameter. ·However, the preparation of perfectly uniform particles is necessary for solders for the adhesion of electronic wiring 3), ion exchange resins4), catalysts and so on. Large quantities of fine particles and super-fine particles are generated when manufactured in the usual way. Large quantities of these fine· particles and super-fine particles have polluted the internal and external' environments of factories. The products yield' ·decreases, also. From such a background, this study examines the preparation of perfectly uniform particles that could be· collected -100% as products. Recently, NASA has succeeded in the preparation of perfectly uniform particles in zero gravity 5). But the preparation of 'perfectly uniform particles by this method is difficult, and it can not be used in general industry"

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama Power Co., jointly, conducted the first experiment undertaken in the United States in underground gasification of coal in place, at Gorgas, Ala. Milton H. Fies, manager of coal operations, Alabama Power Co., proposed the cooperative investigation to Arno C. Fieldner, chief, Fuels and Explosives Branch, Bureau of Mines; and assisted in supervising the experiment. The objectives of the experiment were to determine whether coal in place could be burned successfully and whether the burning could be controlled; the effect of the fire on the coal bed and the overlying strata; and the yield and quality of gas that could be obtained.

By utilizing an 8,000-ft experimental field well equipped with 10 gas-lift valves and 10 Maihak pressure recorders, gas-lift tests were conducted with port sizes ranging from 5/16 through I in. The well was equipped to provide accurate means of measuring surface pressures, temperatures, quantity of injection gas and fluid production. The tests were conducted in 2%-in. OD tubing, and the well was making 95 per cent water. A complete evaluation of gas-lift-valve port sizes shows the relationship of per cent recovery, gas-liquid ratios, minimum pressure created at the operating valve and horsepower requirements for each port. The length of time necessary for the fluid in the tubing to reach equilib.rium conditions after each cycle was recorded. Fallback of fluid at depths of 477, 969, 1,685, 2,493 and 4,290 ft was noted. For each port size, pressure loads of 2.50, 300, 350, 400 and 450 psi were lifted with a valve operating at approximately 550 psi at 6,000 ft. Gas-liquid ratios for each load were varied from excess gas to a gas volume per cycle whereby the load failed to reach the surface. Numerous curves are presented in evaluating the accumulated dara. The results show a 1-in. port to be the most efficient under all conditions. The production of intermittent liquid slugs against different-sized surface chokes was evaluated. These tests were conducted from a 7/16-in. ported valve at 4,072 ft. Tests indicate that, when possible, a %-in. in diameter choke or larger should be used at the surface. In the past few years most of the advancement in gas-lift operations has been made in continuous-flow operations. Yet, it is estimated that at least 70 per cent of the wells on gas lift in the United States are of the intermittent type. Since the term "slug flow" is sometimes used in both intermittent- and continuous-flow operations, it would be well to distinguish between the two types of flow. Continuous-flow gas lift is defined as a method whereby the fluids are produced at a continuous rate at the surface. This generally requires a continuous injection of gas through a surface choke; however, various other control devices sometimes are installed to eliminate freezing, to shut-off gas during natural flow periods, etc. The actual flow of fluids in the tubing may be of the slug type (one of many flow patterns known to exist in continuous flow). Intermittent flow is defined as a method of gas lift whereby the liquid is produced in separate piston-type slugs. Perhaps this type of flow could best be thought of as a ballistic-type flow where the liquid leaves bottom as a piston, propelled by a slug of expanding gas. Gas generally is injected through some type of control at the surface at predetermined intervals. However, the valve may have characteristics whereby gas can be injected through a small choke and still result in a ballistic-type flow. The purpose of the experimental work was to evaluate the most efficient port size to be used on the operating valve for the ballistic type of lift and, in addition, to establish the importance of utilizing a surface choke large enough to allow slugs to be produced without detrimental effects. This work is part of a compre- hensive study of both intermittent-and continuous-flow gas lift, representing a joint project conducted by the Ohio Oil Co., the Sun Oil Co., Otis Engineering Corp, and The U. of Texas. The problem of evaluating port sizes has been given little previous attention. Some work undoubtedly has been done which has not been published to date. Some tests were conducted when the wireline, mechanically-opened valve (Nixon) first came on the market. This valve was capable of utilizing full tubing area as its port size. It is known that this was a very efficient valve, but to the authors&apos; knowledge the results of tests have never been published. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT These tests were conducted on an actual field well, the Ohio-Sun Unit Well No. 2-E, in the North Markham-North Bay City field, Matagorda County, Tex. The well incorporated 23/8-in. OD tubing and produced 95 per cent water. Since the running of equipment was to be quite elaborate and expensive, a well was selected in which both intermittent- and continuous-flow tests could be conducted. This particular well was capable of producing in excess of 1,000 B/D of liquid (95 per cent salt water), yet with a 3/64-in. in diameter bottom-hole choke, production was controlled to 82 B/D. Most of the intermittent tests were conducted at this low rate. Figs. 1 and 2 show all the surface and down-hole equipment. As can be seen, every attempt was made to insure that ample equipment was available for reliable testing procedures. Fig. 1 shows the surface testing equipment. "INTRODUCTION Secondary mine ventilation has been hamstrung by the availability of fans that satisfy many competing operational factors. The sometimes legislated requirement of adequate volume to the working face, the minimisation of excavation required to fit the selected secondary fan and the power requirements of various operational phases has, in the past, not been satisfied with just one system. The new system being introduced overcomes all these competing requirements in one simple unit with an added bonus of being very durable without loss of performance when wear occurs on the impeller. Existing Operational Situation Several studies (e.g., CIPEC, 2005; LCG Energy Management Group, 2009) have found that between 42% and 49% of mining energy costs are associated with mine ventilation, depending on the type of mine and the equipment used. If we then look at the general breakdown of installed power of the secondary fan to primary vent fans, the ratio is around 2:1. Thus the total energy costs of the secondary ventilation represents about 25% of the overall mining energy costs. It is of interest to note that the cost of running a typical two stage axial vs the cost of purchasing and general maintenance cost of the same fan over a 10 year period, the breakdown will be conservatively in the order of 40:1.The currently available secondary ventilation axial fan have one duty curve at any given time. Generally this can be changed manually within the motor power parameters but requires a minor outage and removal of the fan to do the pitch adjustments. As the bag vent ducts grow longer, the supplied air reduces to a point where inadequate air is supplied to the working face. This is exacerbated by underground equipment putting additional resistance in the heading and further reducing the supplied air at the working face. This shortfall is normally corrected by the installation of an additional fan in the system to overcome losses in the bag system but comes at a cost of production as the heading needs to be shutdown to install the second fan. This also means that the heading is supplied with excessive air on the shorter runs with a wastage of fan power."

Brought on stream in 1975, the 10,000-tpd copper oxide processing plant of Anamax Mining Co. at Twin Buttes, Ariz., is now at design capacity. Based on acid agitation leaching, solvent ion exchange, and electrowinning, the Anamax plant bridges an ore to metal gap by producing mine site copper cathodes from lime-bearing oxidized feed. Until recently, such material was considered submarginal because copper recovery was uneconomic using conventional methods. The new Twin Buttes oxide plant, the largest of its kind in North America, is one stage in the expansion of Anamax, a joint venture owned equally by The Anaconda Co. and Amax Inc. Other phases include an accelerated stripping program in the pit, an expansion of the sulfide concentrator from 32,000 to 40,000 tpd, and construction of a 57 MW diesel generating station for the oxide plant. Once the basic oxide flowsheet had been selected, Anamax awarded a contract to a joint venture of Arthur G. McKee and Co.&apos; (Western Knapp Engineering Div.) and Davy Powergas&apos; (a member of the Davy International group). The contract covered process design, engi¬neering, procurement, and construction. The property, identified by Banner Mining Co. in the 1950s and developed by Anaconda, was put into production in 1965 as an open pit mine equipped with a 32,000-tpd sulfide flotation concentrator. The Twin Buttes mine has since become one of the largest earth¬moving operations in the world, excavating some 10 tons of waste per ton of ore. At the original sulfide mill feed rate, the mining fleet moved 375,000 tpd of material (225,000 tpd alluvium and 150,000 tpd of rock). The most significant copper mineral in the ore body is chalcopyrite, which is scattered in pockets of weak mineralization. Cap oxidation has progressed to depths of several hundred feet, principally as chryso¬colla. Present estimates place minable reserves at 347 million tons of sulfide ore grading 0.6% copper and 55 million tons of oxide ore grading 0.9% recoverable copper from 1.25% total copper. The nonre¬coverable fraction is composed of native copper and insoluble copper oxides and sulfides. The oxide ore has been partially stripped, and 25 million tons having a copper content greater than 0.6% have been stockpiled. The stripping of oxide ore to expose sulfides will continue for several years. The copper oxide studies launched by Banner Mining in the 1950s were continued by Anaconda. Process routes investigated included: acid leaching; cyanide leaching; segregation roasting; chlorination, oxidation, and reduction; flotation in combination with leaching; cal¬cite flotation plus leaching; copper oxide flotation; and sulfidization flotation. By late 1968 test work favored a low temperature roast followed by an ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach of the ore. During this period, acid leaching had been discounted because of excessive con¬sumption of expensive acid by the high limestone ore matrix. Restric¬tive SO2 emission controls in 1971 suggested an increase in acid production and availability at a lower cost. Research then switched to acid leaching, resulting in development of the present flowsheet. Mechanically agitated leaching in a cascaded series of tanks was selected in preference to vat leaching after piloting a stirred-tank system. Preliminary testing of vat leaching indicated that inter-vat solution clarification problems could be caused by gas evolution from leaching of high limestone ore. Lack of research time for resolution of this problem, plus success of the pilot agitation system, dictated the final flowsheet selection. In 1973 Anamax decided to proceed with agitation acid leaching to produce liquor for a solvent ion exchange (SIX) and electrowinning (EW) installation. At that time, such systems were proving their eco¬nomic viability, and they allowed direct recovery of high quality cath odes while bypassing the smelting and refining of lower grade cement copper precipitates. The Anamax oxide plant processes a grade of about 1% recovera¬ble copper from stockpiled sources and new mine production. Unit operations include size reduction, agitation leaching, countercurrent decantation washing of residue, pH adjustment of solution, clarifica¬tion, solvent ion exchange, and electrowinning of copper, with a mini¬mum of environmental impact. The feed to the primary crushers is composed of: 1) -10-in. stockpiled oxide ore, which has passed through the mine crusher and has been grade-segregated to allow blending for a consistent feed material. 2) -4-ft ROM oxide ore stockpiled in the early mining operation. 3) -10-in. ore currently being mined. Ore is delivered in 100-ton mine trucks to a dump pocket, where an apron feeder transfers the ore to an inclined 6-in. fixed grizzly. The grizzly oversize passes through a 48 x 60-in. primary jaw crusher, where it is reduced to -6 in. The fixed grizzly undersize and the crusher product are conveyed to a 4-in. vibrating grizzly. Oversize from this grizzly reports to a 7-ft Standard cone crusher, where it is reduced to -1 in. The crusher product and the vibrating grizzly undersize are conveyed to two 8 x 20-ft double-deck vibrating screens that operate in closed circuit with two 7-ft short head cone crushers. Screen undersize (-1/2 in.) is delivered to a covered conical fine ore stockpile with a designed live capacity of 15,000 st. Beneath the stockpile are ten Pioche belt feeders feeding two conveyor belts that supply the milling circuits. Each group of five feeders has two variable speed and three fixed speed drives. Grinding to 95% -48 mesh is done in two parallel lines, each consisting of an 111/1 x 18S -ft rod mill and a 12&apos; x 30-ft ball mill in open circuit. Water is added to maintain a pulp density of 72% solids in the mills. Further water additions are made to the ball mill discharge sumps to create a 60% solids slurry for transfer to the leaching reactors. The nominal grinding rate is 440 tph solids. A splitter box on the product from the mills separates the incoming slurry into two streams, one for the leaching reactors and the other for the pH adjustment reactors. This split is determined by the lime content of the feed material and the pH of solution entering the pH adjustment reactors. Five 30-ft diam by 31-ft high mechanically agitated, rubber-lined leach tanks are arranged in cascade, with gravity transfer from one to another by enclosed launders. Concentrated sulfuric acid (93.2%) from storage is added to the pulp principally at the first leach tank, and the reacted slurry leaving the cascade after a 5-hr residence time at 50% solids is pumped to countercurrent decantation (CCD) wash thickeners.&apos; At this point, most of the soluble copper has been leached from the ore. Up to 250 lb of sulfuric acid is consumed per ton of ore, the acid being supplied in tank cars from a nearby smelter. Leached slurry at 50% solids is washed countercurrently with return raffinate from the SIX plant in a series of four Doff-Oliver center caisson, 400-ft diam thickeners. Solids advance from thickeners No. I through No. 4 to the tailings dam. SIX raffinate advances from thickener No. 4 to thickener No. l, where a pregnant solution overflows to pH adjustment. To optimize solvent extraction, the pH of the pregnant solution from CCD thickener No. I is adjusted from 1.5 to 2.5 by adding unreacted ground slurry (split from the grinding circuit) to the preg¬nant overflow of No. I CCD thickener. The resulting slurry is retained for 45 min in three mechanically agitated leach tanks. CO, generated during leach and pH adjustment is ducted to a demister, where entrained acid droplets are removed. The cleaned CO, and the No. 4 CCD underflow are the only effluents from the plant. The underflow of No. 4 thickener mixes with tailings from the sulfide concentrator and is neutralized. Slurry exits the pH adjustment vessels at about 10% solids and

INTRODUCTION In 1957, diamond drilling on a magnetic anomaly indicated an extensive zone of copper mineralization on what is now the Craigmont Mines property. By mid¬1958, drilling established a copper ore body. Milling commenced in September 1961 at 4536 t/d (5000 stpd) and by the end of October 1977 the mine had produced 339 662.04 t (374,363.9 st) of copper. At present, two-thirds of the mill feed is derived from underground operations and one-third from low-grade surface stockpiles. Craigmont Mines is situated 209 km (130 air miles) northeast of Vancouver (see Fig. 1), 16 km (10 miles) west of the town of Merritt, a logging, ranching, and mining community of about 7000 people. It is serviced by paved highways, Canadian Pacific Railway, British Columbia Hydro, and Inland Natural Gas Co. Water is pumped from the Nicola River, a distance of 6 km (4 miles) and a lift of 244 m (800 ft). In March 1967, the open pit mining operations at Craigmont Mines reached their economic limit and were suspended. Before this, it had been decided that a sub¬level caving method of underground mining would be used to supply ore to the concentrator after the cessation of open pit production. This chapter describes the fac¬tors influencing the choice of mining method, some of the problems encountered, mining practices, and results. GEOLOGY The ore bodies of upper Triassic age are located in a limy horizon striking east-west, closely paralleling the intrusive Guichon batholith, bounded on the south by rhyolites and on the north by graywackes, and dipping steeply to the south (Figs. 2a, b). The ore bodies are relatively narrow with a maxi¬mum width of 79 m (260 ft), a combined strike length of 853 m (2800 ft), and a vertical extent of 610 m (2000 ft). Chalcopyrite is virtually the only copper mineral, and 20% of the ore zone consists of acid solu¬ble magnetite and hematite. The area has been subjected to considerable faulting and brecciation, which is a major factor in the mining operation. Total geological reserves, at 0.7% Cu cutoff, for the deposit were 22 316 743 t (24,600,000 st) at 1.89% Cu. An additional 5 236 270 t (5,772,000 st) at 0.6% Cu were mined from the open pit. Ground Conditions The waste rocks-graywacke, andesites, and diorite -are relatively incompetent due to the high degree of fracturing and jointing, and all require varying degrees of support. The ore zones are somewhat less fractured; ground support is still required, however, although to a lesser extent than in the country rock. Ground conditions in the main ore body are better than in the smaller, nar¬rower ore bodies. Clayey fault gouge is present in most of the faults; gouge zones may be up to 6 or 9 m (20 or 30 ft) wide. The main ground problems are associated with local weakness rather than pressure. Shape of Ore Bodies (Figs. 2a, b and 3a, b) The main No. 1 ore body is approximately 244 m (800 ft) long and 46 m (150 ft) wide. It extends ver¬tically from the original top of the open pit at 4200 ele¬vation to just below the 3060 level. The No. 2 ore body is approximately 304 m (1000 ft) long, varies from stringer width at the extremities up to 79 m (260 ft) wide, and extends from 3060 level to 2400 level. Both these ore bodies have extensions re¬sulting in additional small irregular bodies. Ore bodies are mostly steep dipping, though part of the Wing ore body, an extension of No. 2 ore body, dips at 0.87 rad (50&apos;). This ore body varies in size, but is approximately 122 m (400 ft) long, 21 m (70 ft) wide, and about 213 m (700 ft) high. No. 1 Limb ore body is a narrow extension of the No. I Main with a vertical extent of 137 m (450 ft), average width of 18 ft (60 ft), a strike length of 152 m (500 ft), and dips steeply at 1.4 rad (80°). No. 1 East is an eastern extension of the No. 1 Main with a vertical extent of 183 m (600 ft), a strike length of 91 m (300 ft), an average width of 30 m (100 ft), and dips at 1.2 to 1.4 rad (70 to 80°). Results are presented of a study on the combined influences of ingot dendrite am spacing and thermo-mechanical treatments on the fracture behavior and mechanical properties of high purity 7075 aluminum alloy. The most important single variable influencing mechanical properties was found to be undissolved alloy second Phase (microsegregation inherited from the original ingot). Ultimate and yield strengths were found to increase linearly with decreasing amount of alloy second phase while ductility increased markedly. At low amounts of second phase, transverse properties were approximately equal to longitudinal properties. In tensile testing, microcracks and holes were invariably found to originate in or around second phase particles. Fracture occurred both by propagation of cracks and coalescence of holes, depending on the distribution and amount of second phase. IN most commercial wrought alloys, second phase particles are present that are inherited from the original cast ingot. These include, for example, non-equilibrium alloy second phases such as CuAl2 and impurity second phases such as FeA13 and Cr2A1, in aluminum alloys. A previous paper1 has dealt with the morphology of these second phases in cast and wrought aluminum 7075 alloy, and with their behavior during various thermomechanical treatments. In this paper we discuss the influence of the particles on mechanical properties and fracture behavior of the alloy. Previous experimental work indicating a direct and major effect of second phase particles on mechanical properties (especially on ductility) includes the work of Edelson and Baldwin on pure copper.&apos; Also relevant are the many studies demonstrating the important effect of nonmetallic inclusions on the fracture of. steel.3&apos;4 Work on aluminum includes that of Antes, Lipson, and Rosenthal5 who showed that a dramatic improvement in ductility of wrought aluminum alloys of the 7000 series is achieved by eliminating second phases. It now seems well established that included second phases play a dominant role in controlling ductility (as measured, for example, by reduction in area in a tensile test) of a variety of materials. There is, therefore, considerable current interest in the mechanisms by which second phase particles affect ductile fracture. Experiments done by various workers have shown that second phase particles or discontinuities in the microstructure are potential sites for nuclea-tion of microcracks and of holes,6-l3 which then grow and cause premature fracture and the loss of ductility. Theoretical attempts have been made to explain the observed phenomena; most are able to explain observations qualitatively, but lack quantitative agreement. Much experimental work needs to be done to aid extension of theoretical models. A recent review article by Rosenfield summarizes work in this general area.14 PROCEDURE Material used in the previously described study on solution kinetics of cast and wrought 7075 alloy1 was also used in this study. Procedures for ingot casting, solution treating, and working were described in detail in that paper. Test bars were obtained for material of 76 initial dendrite arm spacing (11/2 in. from the ingot base) and 95 µ initial dendrite arm spacing (51/2 in. from the ingot base) for the following thermomechanical treatments (solution temperature 860°F; reduction by cold rolling). a) Solution treated 12 hr, reduced 2/1, 4/1, and 16/1. b) Solution treated 12 hr, reduced 16/1, solution treated approximately 5 hr after reduction. c) Same as a) except solution treated 24 hr prior to reduction. d) Same as b) except solution treated 24 hr prior to reduction. e) Same as d) except solution treated 20 hr after reduction. Test bars were taken both longitudinally and transverse to the rolling direction. Transverse properties are in the long transverse direction; since the final product was sheet (0.030 in. thick), properties in the short transverse direction could not be obtained. Test bars were flat specimens, of gage cross section1/-| in. by 0.030 in. and 1/2 in. gage length. After machining the test bars, they were given an additional 1/2 hr solution treatment of 860°F and aged 24 hr at 250°F. Three bars were tested for each location and thermomechanical treatment, after rejection of mechanically flawed bars. The average results of these three bars are reported. Elongation was measured using a $ in. extensometer and reduction in area was determined using a profilometer to measure the area after fracture. INFLUENCE OF THERMOMECHANICAL TREATMENTS AND SECOND PHASE ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Results of mechanical testing are presented in Figs. 1 to 4 and in tabular form in the Appendix. A general conclusion from results obtained is that details of the thermomechanical treatments studied were important only insofar as they influenced the amount of residual second phase. New turbine blades designed to resist ash erosion were tested by the Bureau of Mines in a pilot-scale coal-fired gas turbine. After a total of 1,963 hours, the rotor blades were only slightly eroded; and they had an estimated useful life of 20,000 to 30,000 hours. Changes in aerodynamic design of the blades successfully concentrated the ash at the outer casing, but stepped sidewalls for the rotor drum and wear strips at the bases of the rotor blades are still needed to minimize wear at these points. Stepped sidewalls and wear strips did not adequately protect the stator blades. Ash slightly eroded their leading edges, above the inserts, and cut notches into their trailing edges near the bases. Stator blade life was estimated at 5,000 to 7,500 hours. Blade erosion in these tests was less severe than with previous designs, but more efficient combustors and ash separators are required to reduce the amount and size of ash entering the turbine, to achieve acceptable blade life for commercial operation.

Tremendous interest has been evidenced in the subject of dewatering and drying ooal for the past 10 years, and yet little effort has been made to summarize the literature, at least so far as this country is concerned. Only a few published articles have dealt solely with dewatering and drying coal. In most cases the subject has been discussed briefly, either in general terms or as to specific installations. It is desirable that a compendium be prepared collecting in one place information on the dewatering and drying of coal, the needs for this process in various fields, the available equipment, and the current American practice in regard to it. This work was underta..lten by the :Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama. New coal-washing plants in which various types of dewatering and drying equipment were in operation were visited in-Pennsylvania; Ohio, India...~a~ and Illinois. Magnesium is present in nickels leach liquor and it is often disposed in waste barriers. However, new technologies with the aim of recuperating magnesium and other metals in the liquor have proven that it is possible to reduce the amount of metal lost during nickel ore processing. In this context, high temperature crystallization removes magnesium, with a concentration of 8 g/L, as MgSO4 H2O from the leach liquor. Kinetic studies of this process are needed to evaluate the thermodynamics of the growth of crystals. Thus, this work aims to study the crystallization kinetics of MgSO4 H2O. Temperatures of 230, 210 and 200 °C were investigated in a batch crystallization system in solutions with pH2. Aliquots were taken at each hour up to 5 h of time residence and analysed by ion chromatography for magnesium concentration. The reaction mechanism as well as rate constant and activation energy for each reaction temperature were obtained
