In recent years several mine researchers have studied the optimization of cutoff grade with the purpose of maximizing Net Present Value (NPV). The best and most popular one is the Lane algorithm. Based upon the Lane algorithm it is possible to calculate the optimum cutoff grade for mine, mill, and refinery capacities for single metal deposits with variable grades. The Lane algorithm cannot be used in multiple metal deposits. The reason is that, while in single metal deposits six points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grade, in multiple metal deposits an infinite number points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grades and objective function evaluation of these infinite points is impossible. In this study the Golden Section search method was used to calculate optimum cutoff grades of multiple metal deposits for the same conditions as Lane assumed in single metal deposits. Based on this method, grade-tonnage distribution uncertainty space of problem is guessed. In the next step, by selecting test points in uncertainty space and evaluating the objective function at these points, a part of uncertainty space will be eliminated. The procedure is then repeated until the uncertainty space has been sufficiently reduced to ensure that the optimum cutoff grades have been located to the required accuracy. INTRODUCTION The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounzes per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required three lift hoisting for men, materials and ore. I n addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity and temperature and ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operations. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation.

Scheelite, the most abundant tungsten mineral in the Philipsburg region of Montana, is found in replacement deposits and along fissures and cracks in limestone at various distances from contacts with acidic igneous rocks. It also occurs at the limestone-igneous contacts, but typical garnet tactites are developed in only a few places in the region. The most favorable host rocks for scheelite mineralization are the Jefferson, Hasmark, and Madison limestones. Scheelite is exposed in float, outcrops, and surface and mine workings along a 2-mile-wide belt extending southwest from Lost Creek beyond Silver Lake, a distance of 15 miles or more. (See fig. 1.) Some scheelite is found in veins formerly mined for silver. Powellite and molybdenite occasionally are present with the scheelite. Hubnerite occurs in quartz veins in the Black Pine area 10 miles northwest of Philipsburg. These quartz veins occur in the quartzites of the Precambrian Spokane formation. Tungsten production in the region has come almost exclusively from scheelite deposits, both lode and placer. During a 6-year period beginning in 1943 a total of 142.0 tons of 63-percent W03 concentrate was produced by H & H Mines Co. In the early 1950's, the Trigger mine produced 4,000 tons of 1-percent W03 ore and the Tip Top 650 tons of 2.0-percent W03 ore and 2,906 tons of 2.2-percent ore. There has been sporadic production from some of the smaller properties in the area.

The deep ocean mining industry is in a pre-commercialization stage of development. In the context of a proper legal/regulatory regime, deep ocean mining system design, site survey, and operation technologies are capable of rapid evolution. The report recommends that the regulatory framework develop in parallel with the industry and presents a rationale for implementing this approach. The Government has several interests in deep ocean mining technology: (1) as a potential regulator, sound regulations should be based on an understanding of the technology; (2) as a potential monitor, survey technologies are relevant; and (3) as an estimator of strategic minerals supplies, it is important to understand the technology which allows economic access to deep ocean minerals. Thus, the major portion of the report presents an in-depth review of systems design, operations, and survey equipment and techniques.

These proceedings consist of an introduction, nine descriptive papers, and a summary. The first paper is an overview of the respirable dust research program, the second paper describes the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration's proposed changes in the respirable dust enforcement program, and the third paper describes respirable dust measurement. The remaining papers, by Bureau and contractor personnel, describes methods of reducing the amount of respirable dust to which coal miners are exposed. Of the six methods of reducing exposure to respirable dust described, two are methods of preventing or reducing the amount of respirable dust raised during mining operations, two are methods of collecting or removing dust after it has been released into the mine atmosphere, 2nd two describe methods that are combinations of prevention and collecting .

Correct measurement and interpretation of viscosity data is critical for design of any thickening and pumping process that involves a non Newtonian slurry. The nickel laterite pressure acid leach (PAL) process relies on producing a slurry of maximum achievable solids concentration. Small variations of 1-2% solids concentration can alter economics significantly. For the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project, a rheology protocol has been developed which optimizes the solids concentration across a range of ore types. The vane yield stress technique has been utilized to accurately quantify the flow of thickened slurry in the lower shear range. A yield stress of 100Pa has been used as a benchmark to determine the optimum solids concentration achievable utilizing deep cone thickening. Statistical analysis of the data shows critical rheology distinctions between ore type, particle size, lithology and geochemistry. Linear and power law models have been applied to rheology flow curves to reconcile the material transport properties with the anticipated thickener underflow solids concentration. The Bureau of Mines investigated a glass containing approximately 17 percent lithia and 83 percent silica to establish a method of devitrifying cast and rolled shapes. Glass shapes with high strength were made by melting, forming, and rapid cooling of the composition, and the shapes subsequently were converted to a crystalline condition by heat treatment. The best devitrification schedule included rapid cooling of the glass to below 300° C, followed by reheating at a rate of 50° to 400° C per hour, depending on the size of the shape, followed by a of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C and another period of 15 hours at 800° C. attempts to use faster heating rates or slow cooling to accomplish devitrification in deformation of the shapes. The crystalline shapes had flexural strengths that averaged over 33,000 psi, achieved with an annealing time of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C.

"A weathering-crust niobium-rare earth-bearing deposit is formed by the weathering alterationof alkaline granite, which is refractory due to its low grade and complex properties. The mineralogicalcomposition of ore, the grain size of majorminerals as well as the occurrence of Nb and REE are studied in this paper using MLA combined with traditional methods. According to the results, a wide range of Nb-Ti-REE compound minerals including titanoniobite, uranpyrochlore, chlopinite, samarskite and ilmenorutile areformed for the extensive isomorphous substitution among the elements of Nb, Ta, REE, Fe, Ti, U and Th. The occurrence of REE is extremely complex. First, the REEexistingas rare earth minerals including monazite, xenotime, bastnaesite,etcaccount for 21%. Second, the REEexist in the lattice of Nb and Zr minerals as isomorphous additions, which account for 18%. Third, the REE exist as colloidal rare earthdeposit,which account for 35%. Last, the REEexistingas ion-adsorption-type rare earth,which are adsorbedon the kaolinite in the form of hydrated hydroxyl ions, account for 26%.Based on the results of mineralogy, the combined technology process "mineral processing- hydrometallurgical separation" is needed to deal with the ore. The mineral processing tests show that, for the feed ore containing Nb2O5 0.065%, REO 0.13%, an Nb-REE concentrate containing Nb2O5 1.38%, REO 1.98% can be gained by "high intensity magnetic separation-regrinding-gravity separation by shaking tables". The recovery of Nb2O5 and REO is 62.42% and 44.78% respectively. The Nb-REE concentrate is dealt by the metallurgy process "direct reduction- acid leaching & acidulating- neutralization & precipitation- chlorination & distillation" and the rare earth oxide of 92.34% REO as well as the Nb-Zr oxide of 24.62% Nb2O5 can be obtained with the recovery of REO and Nb2O5 being 76.83% and 59.37% respectively."

"Low-grade ultramafic nickel ores, while representing a large potential nickel resource, are difficult to process due to their serpentine content. Microwave treatment is proposed as a technique to improve the beneficiation of ultramafic nickel ores by converting the constituent serpentine to olivine. The present paper reviews the microwave heating response of ultramafic nickel ores and resultant changes in mineralogy, as well as effects on grinding and slurry rheology. Beyond nickel extraction, microwave treatment improves the mineral carbon storage capacity of ultramafic ore tailings, providing a potential source of additional revenue via the sale of carbon credits. The combined positive effects, considered in the context of the whole operation, suggest an economically viable process is possible.INTRODUCTIONAs high-grade deposits become depleted, the processing of low-grade ores has become increasingly important. One such resource is low-grade ultramafic nickel ores. While representing a large source of nickel, these ores are difficult to process due to their serpentine content. Serpentine is a phyllosilicate mineral consisting of 1:1 stacked sheets of silica tetrahedra and magnesium hydroxide octahedra. There are three primary polymorphs: lizardite (platy), antigorite (corrugated) and chrysotile (coiled, fibrous). The anisotropic nature and non-spherical morphology of serpentine particles leads to complex rheology. Suspensions of serpentine minerals, especially those of chrysotile, exhibit high viscosity and yield stress, which can have a negative effect on comminution, flotation and dewatering operations. In flotation, serpentine is known to slime-coat pentlandite, a valuable nickel mineral, and form bubble-fibre aggregates that report to the froth, reducing nickel concentrate grade and recovery. Methods used to counteract the effects of serpentine in processing include desliming, the addition of chemical dispersants, salts or acid, and dilution (Bobicki et al., 2014a). Microwave pre-treatment has been proposed as an alternative way to eliminate the deleterious effects of serpentine in ultramafic nickel ore processing by converting the serpentine to olivine via dehydroxylation, which occurs at 600-700oC (Reaction 1). Olivine is isotropic, consisting of isolated silica tetrahedra linked by octahedrally coordinated magnesium ions, and has the same surface potential as pentlandite at the pH of flotation (~pH 9). Furthermore, since olivine is more reactive to CO2 than serpentine, microwave pre-treatment creates an opportunity to store more CO2 in tailings, an attractive option for mining operations looking to increase their bottom line where carbon pricing exists."

Laboratory chromate coating was applied on AM50 and AZ91D alloys and compared to phosphate-permanganate one. Evaluation of the corrosion behaviour was performed using electrochemical DC and AC methods in ASTM water D1384-87. This electrolyte was chosen because it was moderately aggressive and found to give generally good correlations with long period exposure results in atmospheric conditions. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to determine more accurately the corrosion rates from the analyses of the high frequency capacitive loop. Anodic polarization was applied in order to evaluate the pitting resistance of the different coatings. These results were correlated with weight loss data evaluated from experiments performed by immersion tests in ASTM water D1384-87 and climatic cyclic chamber tests.

"In this study, the flotation characteristics of a cassiterite-bearing fine-grained and complex skarn ore from a deposit in the Ore Mountains is investigated. The tests are performed using an oil-assisted column flotation approach to process very fine ore fractions and avoid losses of cassiterite into the tailings. First, process parameters are obtained for a finely ground artificial mixture of quartz, magnetite and cassiterite, simulating the real ore. Thereby, magnetite is used, as iron oxides can have a detrimental effect on the flotation due to a similar flotation behavior. In addition, they can act as a source of multivalent ions, which are known to reduce the concentration of collector molecules, active for flotation. Based on the results, selected parameters are further tested for cassiterite skarn ore from the Hämmerlein deposit including a pre-conditioning and a water exchange step to remove ionic contaminants. The process response is analyzed in detail by XRF (X-ray fluorescence) and MLA (mineral liberation analysis) to get a better understanding of the behavior of the single ore components. Sulfosuccinamate type surfactant is utilized as the collector, emulsifier and to reduce the froth destabilization through nonpolar oil. Sodium hexafluorosilicate is added as the depressant.INTRODUCTION Complex skarn ore deposits containing considerable amounts of tin, indium and other metals are located in the Ore Mountains region (Germany). In this study, a skarn ore from the Hämmerlein deposit was investigated. Due to the finely disseminated nature of this ore, past beneficiation attempts failed, and the ore was considered economically unprocessable. However, increasing resource demands brings it back into focus (Schuppan and Hiller, 2012). Cassiterite is the main tin bearing mineral in this ore. Due to its high density (~7 g/cm³), the predominant beneficiation technique is gravity separation (Angadi et al., 2015). Tin ores from disseminated deposits have to be extensively comminuted to reach a sufficient degree of liberation of the cassiterite grains. As cassiterite has a brittle nature, it is preferable enriched in small size fractions, during comminution (Angadi et al., 2015). Gravity separation methods become more and more inefficient for particles smaller 40 µm (Falcon, 1982), causing tin losses of up to 30 to 40wt.-% (Angadi et al., 2015). Thus, froth flotation of cassiterite was first utilized in Altenberg in the Ore Mountains as an additional processing step to reduce the cassiterite losses into gravity separation tailings (Bulatovic, 2010; Gruner and Bilsing, 1992). Although the reported lower size limits for an effective cassiterite floatability are often smaller compared to other minerals, the flotation performance is in general decreasing for small particle sizes < 10 µm (Trahar and Warren, 1976). Therefore, different approaches have been already investigated for the flotation of such fine cassiterite fractions to overcome the limits in particle size. Bilgen et al. investigated the shear flocculation of cassiterite with a sulfosuccinamate collector (Bilgen et al., 1994). The agglomeration flotation of cassiterite has been tested by Schubert et al. (Schubert et al., 1966), in which the selective coagulation of fine hydrophobic particles and oil droplets leads to an increase of the effective particle size. Recently, Leistner at al. investigated an oil-assisted agglomeration flotation for ultra-fine cassiterite ore fractions (Leistner et al., 2016). However, a poor response due to an increased concentration of Fe and Ca ions, unselective oil/gangue coagulation and froth instability, that is caused by oil/frother interactions, has been observed."

To meet the increasing demands of the quality and long term stability of technical systems also the applied materials have to full fill higher standards. This is of special importance where the function of a whole system depends on the reliability of the used materials for example for connector systems in automotive, computer and other electronic equipment?s. In most cases for connector systems electro deposited top layers are applied. To improve the quality of the applied layers new electro deposited systems are developed. One important field of research are the development of composite materials as dispersion coatings and multilayer systems. Multilayers are systems with a high number of single inter-layers of different metals or alloys with the wide chance of the alloy composition. As gold is one of the most important contact material for high quality connector systems it is used as basis for the development of multilayer systems. For the electrodeposition of multilayers two different methods can be applied, the single and the dual plating process. As in the dual plating process two different electrolytes are used, the single plating process allows the formation of multilayers from one electrolyte. In the presented research results cobalt and nickel are used besides gold for the formation of the multilayers. The properties of the layers can be influenced in a wide range by the change of electrolyte composition and the process parameters as current density, current waveform, temperature, hydro-dynamic conditions at the electrode surface and by the number and thickness of the inter layers of the deposited materials. The paper describes the fundamentals of the electro deposition of multilayer systems. For the investigation of the properties of the multilayers different techniques are applied. One of the most important parameter are the thickness of the total layer and of the applied sublayers. The thickness of the sublayers can be varied between a few nanometers up to micrometers. The wear resistance, the contact resistance and the plug-in forces are measured as these parameters are important for the technical application of such layers. For the description of the structure composition and surface properties the sample where also investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray-analyses (EDX) and glow discharge optical spectroscopy (GDOS). The paper shows that the deposition of gold based multilayers is possible and that the properties of such systems can be varied in a wide range what opens new fields of applications of such materials.

The Zurichberg twin track tunnel is the main segment of the Swiss Federal Railway&apos;s new expressline. A heavy concrete lining with a circular cross-section was chosen to cope with the swelling tendency of the surrounding rock. The 4,356 m (14,300 ft) long, 11.52 m (38 ft) diameter tunnel was driven using a shielded Robbins TBM. A 1.20 m (4 ft) wide, 25 cm (10 in) thick precast lining was placed from within the shield tail as the excavation progressed. Tunnel excavation and initial lining operation were completed in 18 months, averaging 11.86 m/day (40 ft/day) in two nine hour shifts. After breaking through, the final 28 cm (11 in) thick concrete arch lining was cast in place.

A program with the objective of developing a fast, accurate instrumental method of analyzing mine dust for incombustible content has been underway in the Bureau of Mines for several years. Several prototype instruments making use of a gamma-ray backscatter technique have resulted. Although extensive laboratory testing has shown that these instruments are accurate under laboratory conditions, only extensive field testing will prove their ultimate practicality and usefulness. This report shows that under most conditions these devices are at least as accurate as the volumetric method and much faster in use. Other data obtained during the same study concerning mine dust are presented; these concern moisture content, sample bulk density distribution, and some particle size distribution information.

During the last years, Chile has been the largest copper producer, either as concentrates or cathodes. Copper obtained via pyrometallurgy is produced by seven smelters, which have carried out modernization plans to increase smelting capacity or to achieve environmental regulations established in the Chilean legislation. Thus, the present work updates technological innovations in smelters, environmental regulations and presents solutions for S02 handling, particulate matter and arsenic. Also, the authors emphasize the important role of CODELCO Chile, the most important state-owned copper company, in developing technologies such as El Teniente Converter and El Teniente Slag Cleaning Furnace.

The iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS is situated in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and has been producing hematite and magnetite concentrates for more than 60 years. Since the late 1990s, the major part of the production comes from a sublevel stoping underground operation after many years of open pit mining. Despite moderate mining depth, the operations have experienced considerable rock stress problems due to quite high tectonic, horizontal stresses. To manage the problems, comprehensive rock mechanics investigations have been carried out by SINTEF, a major contract research organisation. This has included in situ rock stress measurements, laboratory investigations and numerical modelling. Based on this and practical experience, satisfactory design of vertical and horizontal pillars was achieved. At depth, the ore width increases from 30–40?m to more than 100?m. This, together with a major planned increase in production, called for a change of the mining method. After thorough investigations and considerations, it was decided to change to sublevel caving, very much like the LKAB system. The development of the new system has been closely followed up by rock mechanics measures, including 3D numerical modelling and comprehensive monitoring of deformations and rock stress changes. To achieve a satisfactory caving of the hanging wall, all vertical and horizontal pillars in the sublevel stoping area had to be removed. This has been a challenging task, and the development of the caving has been slow until recently. "The Hatch Product Transport (HPT) system is a highly flexible and configurable route selection and sequencing system for controlling large bulk material handling facilities. The system has a generic control algorithm that can be configured to suit any material handling facility. It can also be easily reconfigured to cater to plant expansion or modifications without incurring significant disruption to the existing production, costs in testing, and re-commissioning, thus achieving cost savings throughout a facility’s lifecycle.This new material handling control system has been installed at BHP Billiton’s Port Hedland iron ore terminal to facilitate its expansion to beyond 100 Mt output capacity."

The generation of froth with a critical degree of stability and height is an important aspect of the froth flotation. In this paper we have studied the synergism and anti-synergism in frothing behaviour in a mixed flotation collector/frother mixture (a model fatty acid; sodium oleate and a model frother; nonionic (polyethyleneoxide alkyl C14E6). Values of the collector / frother molecular interaction parameters (the ß-parameters) were determined from the surface tension data using regular solution theory. The frothing characteristics of the system were evaluated using a glass column equipped with a series of conductivity electrodes, which enabled the water content of the froth to be determined. From these measurements, the dynamic frothability and static froth stability were determined. It was concluded that the synergism/anti-synergism in frothability was depended on the molecular composition of the surfactant system, the diffusion of monomer to the thin film interface and on the breakdown of the mixed nonionic/anionic micelles.

In order to establish meaningful remediation goals and monitoring programs in areas disturbed by mining, it is desirable to determine the natural metals concentrations that existed in the area prior to mining. At Iron Mountain, California, several natural sources exist for acid drainage and loading of metals to Slickrock and Boulder Creeks. This paper describes methods to determine the contribution of copper and zinc to groundwater and surface water from those sources, including natural gossan rock outcrops, mineralized bedrock, and colluvial materials. Methods used include evaluation of: 1) historical information, 2) literature values of unmined, mineralized areas, 3) analyses of water from monitoring wells, 4) leaching studies, 5) statistical analysis, 6) isotopic studies, and 7) identification of background by elimination of mining sources. Results from this natural background determination show that Boulder Creek and Slickrock Creek carried elevated concentrations and loads of copper and zinc prior to mining activities. With repeated rinsing of reclaimed and remediated mine materials by rainfall, there will be a diminishing contribution from residual waste rock and tailings at Iron Mountain, and natural background will become an increasingly larger proportion of the total load.
