In contrast to the rather generalized title of this paper, the subject of discussion will deal with two specific cases of sliding in glacial lake clays in northern Michigan. The slides in question occurred on lands owned by the Upper Peninsula Power Company a short distance south of Lake Superior. Slope failure problems have plagued the Company's operations for many years. It is hoped that this paper may provide some insight into the causes and possible mechanisms of clay slides in general as well as providing details of the two slides specifically cited. LOCATION The Upper Peninsula Power Company's Victoria facilities lie in section 29, T. 50 N., R. 39 W., in Ontonagon County, Michigan. The power site is situated on the West Branch of the Ontonagon River, approximately five miles southwest of the town of Rockland and only one mile to the southeast of the old mining location of Victoria. The area lies wholly within the Precambrian Shield and it is geologically similar to adjacent parts of Wisconsin, Minn¬esota, and Ontario. (Figure 1). THE VICTORIA HYDROELECTRIC SITE The Victoria hydroelectric power facilities were constructed in 1930 on a portion of the West Branch where meanders are conspicuously developed. The generating station is actually sited on an abandoned meander at a place where valley widening has occurred. In cold regions rinsing of spent cyanide leach heaps is stopped during winter and is resumed again after snow melts. The effect of this idle time on the overall cyanide removal process was studied in this work. Samples were collected for rinsing tests from one heap at the Ryan Lode Mine of Citigold Alaska, Inc., near Fairbanks. The material was tested for cyanide removal a large column, 1.22 m high by 20 cm square, and in a small column, 1.22 m high by 10 cm in diameter. The rinse water was analyzed at regular intervals to determine the rate of cyanide removal from the solids. It was found that diffusion plays a major role in the removal of cyanide from the ore particles. Calculations showed that the insulating effect of the snow cover on the heap provides an excellent moderates the interior temperature of the heap, and would be expected to help the progress of the diffusion reaction during winter. The result expected result wil1 be higher cyanide values reporting to the rinse water after snow-melt.

"Extensive arrays of telltale roof monitoring instruments were recently installed in a Mexican copper mine and a large underground mined storage facility in the eastern U.S. The data were used to evaluate roof stability during development and retreat mining and after installation of supplemental supports. Both manual-reading and automated systems were employed and consisted of up to 64 instruments. This paper will discuss the practical issues involved with installation and monitoring, including reliability and maintenance. Examples will be given for telltale response in relation to known events affecting roof stability, including nearby pillar extraction roof caving, installation of supplemental cable bolts, and separation of the immediate roof layer. The strategy for processing the large quantity of data, presenting the data for review, monitoring the system remotely, and identifying and reporting critical events will be described.INTRODUCTIONTelltales have been used for many years with many varied applications. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to install and interpret, robust, and adaptable. The term ""telltale"" generally denotes a strata extensometer that incorporates a visual indication (and warning) of strata movement. The most common dual-height telltale (Figure 1) was developed by British Coal in the early 1990s as roof bolting was replacing steel arch support (Bigby, 2001). Dual-height telltales provide immediately visible measurements, distinguish between movements above and below the bolted height, and are an established means for providing preemptive warnings of roof falls.Many improvements and modifications on the basic design have been developed to adapt to different mining conditions. For example, triple-height telltales are commonly used where roof bolts of different lengths are installed. The standard manuallyread telltales are limited by the difficulty of obtaining frequent, consistent, and accurate readings, especially in high openings. The instruments may also be located in unstable or inaccessible areas. Consequently, an intrinsically safe electronic telltale system was developed that combines high accuracy and both local and remote reading options. The system supports a network of up to 100 dualheight telltales on each of four separate branches. The instruments are connected with a two-conductor cable and can be read both underground, using a portable readout, and on a surface computer (Figure 2). The automated system still provides the visual warning indication underground."

The use of anhydrite (AH) seed, control of acidity levels and ageing were assessed as means to promote the conversion of freshly produced metastable gypsum generated in-situ to the less soluble anhydrite phase and force deposition of calcium sulphate on seed as opposed to on equipment as scale, while achieving lower terminal aqueous calcium concentration as well. It was found that moderate sulphuric acid levels (0.25M) and ageing in the presence of AH seed accelerated the gypsum-AH conversion, achieving 100% transformation of the metastable gypsum generated in situ to the more stable, less soluble AH in 6-7 days, while lower/nil acidity did not promote more than 30% AH conversion for 10 days, even in the presence of AH seed. These findings indicate that anhydrite seeding, ageing and incomplete neutralization are beneficial for scale control as well as achieving lower calcium levels, thus rendering the resulting solution more amenable for recycling.

"The East Garden Grove - Wintersburg Channel located in Orange County, California, required upgrades along the levees to mitigate potential liquefaction and lateral spreading hazards. The Orange County Public Works designed soilcrete columns constructed between two rows of steel sheet piles along both sides of the channel between Graham Street and Warner Avenue (approximately 2,500 ft), and along an approximately 2,000-ft-long stretch of the south levee. The earthen embankment, approximately 13- to 15-ft high and damaged significantly by erosion, was then excavated to widen the channel to increase the channel flood conveyance capacity.The site is located within the Los Angeles Basin, underlain by several thousand ft of marine sedimentary strata. Uncontrolled fill materials were encountered to approximately 10 ft below ground surface, underlain by tidal and flood plain deposits. Groundwater was encountered at sea level, which is approximately 10 ft below grade.This paper will discuss site soil conditions, and the construction and quality control of soilcrete columns constructed by wet soil mixing; also, the paper will introduce the Drilling Index (DI) as a measurement tool, similar to the cone penetration test (CPT), to evaluate the soil strength in more detail. Finally, the statistical analysis of soil mixing strength distributions for the project quality control will be presented.INTRODUCTIONWintersburg Channel in Orange County, California, required ground improvements along the existing levees to mitigate potential liquefaction and lateral spreading under the site design earthquake. Orange County Public Works designed and developed a cellular pattern of soilcrete columns sandwiched between two rows of steel sheet piles along both sides of the channel between Graham Street and Warner Avenue, and adjacent an approximately 2,000-ft-long stretch of the south levee (Fig. 1). An earthen embankment approximately 13 to 15 ft high, damaged significantly by erosion, was then excavated to widen the channel and increase the channel flood conveyance capacity.Stiff, soilcrete cellular wall structures can reduce the earthquake-induced cyclic shear stress ratio (CSR) in the soil within the cells, thus preventing excess pore water pressure build up which may trigger soil liquefaction. For this project, approximately 6,700 soilcrete columns were constructed in a cellular pattern to an approximate depth of 40 ft. All of the soilcrete columns are 3 ft in diameter with the design unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 150 psi."

Infrared spectroscopy, employing the internal reflection method in conjunction with solvent extraction techniques, was used to study surface reactions between aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate and both sphalerite and precipitated zinc sulfide each activated with aqueous copper sulfate. It was determined that reactions occurring on the sphalerite and zinc sulfide surfaces produce the reaction products ethyl dixanthogen and cuprous ethyl xanthate, some of which are ad¬sorbed on the mineral surfaces. According to infrared spectra showing the reaction to form these compounds, the ratio of cuprous ethyl xanthate to ethyl dixanthogen adsorbed is directly related to pH of the flotation solution.

"The flexibility of the PlantStar control platform has enabled Mintek to investigate and easily develop new control strategies for both milling and flotation. This includes a Solids Feed Controller, a Safety Limit Controller, Mill Power Optimiser and Flotation Optimiser, amongst others.The solids feed controller was developed for minerals processing plants using a specialised time delay compensator. Using conventional time delay compensators that are purely model based, results in robustness problems due to model uncertainties. The Mintek Solid Feeds Controller makes use of a plant model, but compensates for model inaccuracies, giving more controller stability and a more robust delay compensation algorithm.The safety limit controller has been developed to switch smoothly between normal and safety control loops without bumping the process. The safety loop output is chosen in accordance with a predefined list of priorities and whether the respective constraint boundaries are exceeded.The Mill Power Optimiser helps to find the power peak on the mill power curve. This insures maximum grind with maximum throughput. It also prevents power dips due to mill overloads, making the milling circuit easier to operate.The flotation optimiser algorithm analyses trends of all accessible variables in the process. The algorithm uses this information to calculate operating conditions that will control the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit to a specified setpoint. "PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is a large-scale truck and shovel operation mining thermal-coal in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The operation produces 15 million tonnes of coal and mines over 120 million bank cubic metres of overburden annually. Approximately 35 percent of the waste rock is classified as potentially acid forming. Acid drainage must therefore be managed to prevent acid formation from spoil dumps and mined-out areas.KPC aims to prevent acid production in dumps by covering potentially acid forming spoils with materials identified as non acid-forming. The covers, built to engineering standards, minimise the flux of oxygen and water to pyritic spoils, thereby controlling the oxidation reaction, and reducing ARD discharge to negligible rates. Cover designs and cover materials vary according to stability, materials availability, equipment availability, and cost effectiveness. A modified field net acid generation (NAG) test procedure has been developed at KPC to identify and segregate overburden geochemical types. This paper discusses the ARD management strategies and operational procedures adopted by KPC to manage potentially acid forming waste rock. The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc., an 81% owned subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in early 1988. Production at the open pit Grasberg deposit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold orebody is contained with a young igneous complex of dioritic composition which intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork.

In any treatment process that requires a coarse feed material to be reduced to a fine size by crushing and/or grinding it must be determined whether a wet or dry comminution system should be utilized. All factors must be evaluated in reaching the decision. Among these factors are: 1) Ecology and Plant Environment: Unfortunately in many instances the decision on wet or dry is based on prejudice resulting from an unnecessary fear of dust. The writers submit that this fear, although once justified, is no longer valid because technology and equipment is now available to collect dust to meet any standard. When dry grinding is used it is very often possible to discard a portion of the waste product in a dry state. This will decrease the size of the tailing pond required. As pollution control standards increase it becomes increasingly difficult to clean up water from tailing ponds. 2) Operating Costs: Steel wear is often five or more times greater in wet grinding than in dry grinding. This is mainly due to corrosion. The evaluation of the economics of dry grinding must of course include the air system and dust collection; similarly in a wet grinding plant related pumping and material handling costs should be included. Pumping costs are often overlooked. This assumes water is made to flow for nothing. Pumping can account for 20 percent of the power consumption in the grinding plant. Large scale comparative tests were conducted in a wet and dry commercial plant in 1970. The same ore was used for both tests. With all factors included in both plants the dry system showed lower horsepower per ton.

The synthesis and characterization of silica polyamine composites modified with a variety of sulfur containing ligands is described. The two most successful ligands in terms of sulfur in-corporation and mercury capture are ethylene sulfide and carbon disulfide. The ethylene sulfide forms either an amino mercaptane or a polysulfide upon reaction with amino groups on the composite. The carbon disulfide undoubtedly forms a dithiocarbamate functional group upon reaction of the amino group under basic conditions. Both materials posses excellent capture kinetics and capacities for mercury, Once captured, the mercury is extremely difficult to remove from the composite materials, even with concentrated acids, and they easily pass the TCLP test. The materials are compared with related thioether modified silica polyamine composites and appropriate potential applications are discussed.

To beat capital costs of US$10 per pound of installed capacity has appeared as a major hurdle for the "third generation laterite nickel plants. Forecast costs are escalating. Where can savings come from? Ore beneficiation can reduce the tonnage rate to be processed. High pressure acid leach options include the use of indirect slurry heating and higher operating temperatures to reduce flow rates and residence time. Progress has been reported in atmospheric leaching. High counter current decantation circuit settling rates and high underflow densities reduce CCD costs. Metal recovery options include direct from leach solution to metal production, as used by Bulong and espoused by Goro, and indirect recovery as used by Moa Bay, Murrin Murrin and Cawse. Plant location impacts on the costs of tailings disposal, power and energy costs, supply of consumables and labour costs, among others. Final nickel and cobalt metal production routes are electrowinning, hydrogen reduction or some innovative routes being proposed for Goro. Freezing of high pressure air lines and pneumatic equipment has been a recurring problem in the Thompson Smelter. The particular severity during the winter of 1989-90 resulted in costly process disruptions and repairs. A process improvement team with representatives from operations, engineering and both maintenance supervision and the shop floor was established to develop solutions. Their mandate included process evaluation, design, equipment and in-plant commissioning. In 1990, upon recommendation of the team, we installed three Refrigerant/Desiccant air dryers with a total capacity of 20,000 S.C.F.M. to service the Smelter. This paper discusses processes and process improvements associated with this installation.

As market conditions become more competitive, U.S. coal producers are faced with the increasing need to find methods of lowering production costs in their operations. One area worthy of investigation is the additional recovery of fine coal that is normally discarded in the preparation plant waste stream. United Coal Company is currently assessing the capability of the Deister Flotaire, a new application of a column flotation cell, to recover additional, saleable coal from preparation plant waste. This paper presents the technical data obtained to date. Work with a 0.76 m (30 inch) diameter cell installed in a plant shows considerable coal recovery is possible from a nominal 0.595 run (28 mesh) X 0 refuse stream.

As part of the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), a large-scale column test using bacteria and a sulfide ore was conducted at McClelland Laboratories, Inc., in Sparks, Nevada. Four technology providers participated in this demonstration. A mining company in Nevada provided the sulfide ore, process effluent and make-up water. A process effluent column, a chemical oxidation column, and the four biological treatment columns were set side by side on a test pad outside the laboratory building. The process effluent and chemical oxidation columns were used for experimental control. The goal of this project was to evaluate the viability and feasibility of using these biodegradation technologies to reduce the cyanide to the regulatory level of 0.2 parts per million (ppm) within an acceptable timeframe and with low operational costs. The column testing began on December 3, 1998 and operated until May 17, 1999. One technology provider reached the regulatory level within the 158 days. The remaining three biotechnology columns were approaching the regulatory limit at completion of the demonstration. The MWTP is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is jointly administered through an interagency agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Homestake Mining Co., and the University of Utah, is conducting a field demonstration to evaluate the behavior of rock masses supported with cable bolts. One of two rock masses being studied is supported with both conventional and birdcage cables. This rock mass is located between the 6500 and 6650 levels of the 45-4BN stope. 21 ledge. The second rock mass is the hanging wall of the D-limb stope between the 3500 and 3650 levels near the Ross Shaft and is supported with conventional cables. The primary objectives of the project are to monitor the behavior of the two rock masses during mining using extensometers and cable support strain gauges, after which the rock will be modeled using the finite-element code UTAH III. Field data will be used to verify the modeling. In addition. a comparison between the effectiveness of conventional and birdcage cables will be made.

Plans have been drawn up to mechanize some key operations to improve the quality of cathodes and the working environment as well as economize the refinery operations. "The Chelopech epithermal arsenic bearing high-sulphidation, copper-gold deposit located in Bulgaria is often referred as the richest European gold deposit currently under exploitation. Key points from the flotation circuit of the processing plant have been sampled and selected physicochemical parameters measured. Plant survey has followed with selected samples being submitted to chemical and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). Quantitative analysis has enabled to link the flotation response of the main copper bearing minerals with the physiochemical parameters (Eh, DO, EDTA extractable Cu and Fe) being measured. Data from mineral liberation analysis have highlighted an important process-relevant information explaining the variable floatability in the various granulometric classes.The low chalcopyrite recovery could be linked to the non-sufficient amount of dissolved oxygen measured in the copper selective flotation circuit. Given the finely-disseminated copper bearing minerals, the observed copper losses inside the flotation could be also explained by the insufficient degree of liberation of the mineral grains. Suggestions for improvement in metallurgical recovery are therefore proposed.INTRODUCTIONThe Chelopech deposit is a high sulphidation (HS) volcanic-hosted epithermal gold-copper one (Bonev et al., 2002; Kouzmanov et al, 2009; Strashimirov, et al. 2002). It is considered as one of the largest and economically most important ore deposits in Bulgaria, and often is referred to Europe’s largest currently mined gold resource. It is located in the Srednogorie zone which falls within the central sector of the extensive Tethyan–Eurasian copper belt formed during Mesozoic–Cenozoic time along the southern margin of Eurasia. The Srednogorie zone has the features of a subduction-related, Late Cretaceous island arc, with development of a calk-alkaline to sub-alkaline volcano-plutonic magmatism and associated hydrothermal ore deposits (Bonev et al., 2002).Ore mineralisation occurs as veins, mineralised breccia, and massive sulphide replacements and disseminations. Three mineralisation stages have been identified at Chelopech deposit. An early pyrite–marcasite mineralisation (stage I), characterised by disseminated to massive pyrite followed and partly brecciated by enargite– luzonite and tennantite–chalcopyrite–bornite (stage II) mineralisation. The gold is met in ores belonging to the stage II. Sphalerite and galena veins characterise stage III, best developed below and adjacent to the pyrite–enargite– chalcopyrite ore bodies. Advanced argillic altered volcanoclastic rocks commonly host this mineralisation (Chambefort and R. Moritz, 2014)."

A series of flotation experiments was carried out to study the interaction between the parameters of pulp density (mass per cent of solids in feed slurry) and frother addition (on the basis of solid mass feed rate). It was found that certain combinations of pulp density and frother additions caused large losses in yield. The interactive effect of these parameters can be primarily attributed to the total amount of frother added per unit of water. Consequently it is suggested that frother additions be made on the basis of water flow rate. As frother addition increased, in terms of the amount of frother per unit of water, yield increased rapidly but above an addition rate of about 10 g/tone it reached a plateau. Such results correlated well with qualitative visual observations of changes in bubble size and dispersion, with increasing levels of frother addition.
